Description

When it comes to homespun fun, the Kettles rule the roost, and now four of their hillbilly tales, including The Egg and I, The Further Adventures of Ma and Pa Kettle, Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town and Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm, are together in a spanking new collection, The Adventures of Ma and Pa Kettle: Volume 1. Whether they're hobnobbing with city folk, or tangling with newfangled appliances, Ma (Majorie Main) and Pa (Percy Kilbride) always stay true to their country roots as they try and make sense of our crazy world. Pa might be a tad too gullible, and Ma might be a bit too feisty, but they always seem to get the best of every zany situation with luck, pluck and a whole lot of good old-fashioned love. From beginning to end, it's total madcap adventure and country corn at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Nice to go back.......2007-05-13

Excellent restoration of some of the funniest pieces of cinema ever produced. Yes, you have to somewhat be a fan but seeing Ma & Pa getting their start in The Egg and I makes each addition a laugh a minute. Granted, things might not be politically correct by today's "standards" but if you want good clean comedy, this set is for you.

5 out of 5 stars All time favorite movie.......2007-05-07

This is a clean movie without the cursing, vulgar, and sexual content that movies contain these days. My three children loved it and Would recommed this movie to any one that is looking for a good family movie.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic entertainment.......2007-03-31

I remember watching the Egg and I as a little girl and had looked for it often at the video store. Seeing it as an adult, it is every bit as good as I remember! I love the idyllic farm setting and the humor. My husband and I enjoyed watching all of these family classics!

5 out of 5 stars Ma & Pa Kettle Vol 1.......2007-03-08

I had forgotten just how funny these films were & I have not laughed so hard in a long time. It's pure comedy....adult humor that you can actually watch with your kids! The math scene in "Back On the Farm" brought tears to my eyes. These movies have been a pleasure.

Can a wild horse with a bad attitude and a not-quite-wild but pretty darn sullen teenage girl with a bad attitude be the best things that ever happened to each other? Though we guess the answer pretty early on in Flicka, it doesn't diminish the feel-good family film one bit. The film is a remake of the 1947 My Friend Flicka itself based on the bestselling (and still riveting) novel by Mary O'Hara, and starring a young Roddy McDowall as the aimless teen hero. This 2006 update changes the hero to a heroine, Katy (Alison Lohman), though the dynamic is similar, and in some ways makes the appeal of the film broader. After all, young girls love their horses, and Katy's moxie and determination, as she opens her heart to the wild filly, a touchingly and humanly conveyed. As Katy struggles with her relationship with her gruff dad (given an excellent performance by country star Tim McGraw), she finds she can gain confidence and be the person her father wants her to be--solely by being herself as she connects with Flicka the horse. The cinematography is stunning, and showcases a part of America that once was seen and celebrated often in films, and lately so rare as to be precious. --A.T. Hurley

2 out of 5 stars Lame Remake.......2007-06-13

Whoever green-lit this remake needs to be horsewhipped. Now I don't expect every viewer to be coming from my perspective--I read the 1941 novel My Friend Flicka, watched the 1943 movie many times throughout my childhood and, like the protagonist of the story, broke my own horse to ride. However, I do expect that anyone with an iota of horse sense will immediately agree that this is one lame remake.

The basics are in place: a horse-raising family living in Wyoming struggles to hold onto their ranch while their dreamy youngest child latches onto a wild mustang and becomes convinced that their fates are intertwined. There, the similarities end.

In the update, 12-year-old Ken has morphed into 16-year-old Katy (Alison Lohman), and Flicka, once a delicate sorrel filly we met as a foal and watched grow into a racehorse, is portrayed by a fully-grown, massive black male horse (though he is still referred to as a "she"). Apparently, once Ken lost his manhood, he also lost his ability to ride: Katy falls off of Flicka so many times, head injuries are the only explanation for her incredibly stupid behavior throughout the movie.

If you are hoping, at least, for any semblance of authenticity when it comes to the horsey scenes, forget it. For months, Flicka lives in a roundpen with no feeder, no water bucket and no shelter. Katy has no idea how to properly break and train a horse, but of course Flicka--after a stint in the rodeo, no less--plods along like she's a Pony Rides veteran.

Add to all of the above: over-wrought performances (even the horse overacts!), ding-bat dialogue, and a never-ending barrage of New-Agey songs set to dramatic montages, and you've got the "Flicka" remake. No wonder two horses died during the production of this film--they probably committed suicide.

The only saving grace for this DVD is a delightful photo slide-show of real girls and their horses, which plays out through the end-credits. It's much more stirring and heartwarming than the film itself.

5 out of 5 stars Flicka.......2007-06-13

This heartwarming, breathtaking, exciting, PG rated, DVD movie is one of the best I've seen. Featuring Alison Lohman, Maria Bello and country music star Tim McGraw. If you country lovers are excited already, then get ready for an even bigger excitement!
16-year-old Katy McLaughlin (Lohman) finds a black mustang in the mountains where her family's ranch is set. Katy falls in love with the horse and wants it to be hers. Katy sets out to find and rope the mustang. She then sets out on the struggle to tame the horse. But it's not going to be easy this mustang is pure wild! Taking days to tame, Katy's not going to give up. Katy soon reach's the heart of the horse. Flicka meaning beautiful young girl, is what Katy names her precious horse. Together, Flicka and Katy saddle out for adventures to come. Her and Flicka know that they must become a hard working team in order to stand up to their challenges and face them. But one challenge throws them off. The two meet up with a mountain lion when traveling through the woods to home. Both scared and not knowing what to do. What will happen to Flicka and Katy? Your going to have to see the movie to find out.
I thought this was a great movie! The best! When I heard about it I knew I had to see it. And when I did I loved it! The end was so sad. Movie's never make me cry no matter how sad, but this one did make me cry. This movie took me on an adventure, and I hope it takes you on one too.
I recommend this movie for country lovers, ranchers, and horse lovers because this movie has this all packed in it. I recommend you see Flicka.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2007-06-06

I was so disappointed in this movie, being a great fan of Mary O'Hara's original book. Tim MCGraw was better than I expected---everything else was worse!

1 out of 5 stars boycott my dead flicka.......2007-06-05

I made the mistake of renting this and watched a few minutes -- only to discover with a little online cruising that I should have done ahead of time that two horses were killed in the making of the movie. I didn't watch any further. Who can consider being entertained by any movie knowing animals were tortured and killed during the making of it? It's nauseating and disgusting.

More medical drama and firefighting adventures await the Emergency! fan in this multi-disc set, which compiles all 22 episodes of the action series' 1973-74 season. Story-wise, there's not much change at either Rescue Squad 51's headquarters, which housed Roy DeSoto (Randolph Mantooth) and John Gage (Kevin Tighe), or at Rampart Hospital (home to doctors Robert Fuller and Bobby Troup and head nurse Julie London), though Roy must decide whether to become an engineer or stay with the paramedics in "The Promotion" (Episode 7), and Troup's Dr. Joe Early discovers he has a heart condition in "The Hard Hours" (Episode 19). But story arcs and character change wasn't the fuel that drove Emergency!; it was the rescues, and naturally, there are plenty to be found here, from a motorcycle gang war (season opener "Frequency"), a rocker in a diabetic coma (Episode 4, "An English Visitor") and a singer who suffers a heart attack (Episode 12, "Body Language") to a footballer (Dick Butkus) who is tackled too roughly by his own son ("The Hard Hours") and a magician who locks himself in a safe (Episode 14, "Computer Error"). Guest stars rescued and treated by the regulars this season include a youthful Nick Nolte, Mariette Hartley, Happy Days' Donny Most, and '60s heartthrob Bobby Sherman. Unfortunately, as with previous Emergency! DVD releases, there are no extras, though the episodes are spread across five single-sided discs rather than on double-sided discs. -- Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars EMERGENCY!.......2007-06-27

Saturday nights in the early to mid 1970s was appointment television for me.8:00 p.m.Gage and Desoto. Emergency! Season 3 was an excellent season. The new firetruck debuts in episode 2. The best episode is the one where Gage gets bitten by a rattlesnake attending to victims hurt in an accident where a car goes down an embankment and has to be transported to Rampart on top of engine 51.Another great episode has Bobby Sherman as a young doctor who initially does not think too highly of paramedics until he spends a shift working with Gage and Desoto.Another highlight of Emergency is the joking around among the firemen and hospital staff.Remember the episode where Johnny tries to straighten out an error on his credit card bill. Does Gloria Truelove ring a bell to Emergency! fans? How about when Johnny and Roy buy the 1932 firetruck and Dixie asks them if they knew where she could pick up an old hospital cheap. The only way we Emergency! fans can ever see the show again is to buy the dvd so if you can only afford 1 season of the 3 that are available I would recommend season 3.

4 out of 5 stars Still a good buy for fans!!!.......2007-06-26

If you are a fan of the original Emergency! series, or a new comer that enjoyed Seasons 1 & 2 then don't hesitate to buy Season 3.

I agree with the other criticism (i.e wrong opening theme, no scene info/index, etc), and it does seem clear that Universal did not put near as much effort into this release as they did the first two seasons. But, these cutbacks are just a slight annoyance (-1 star).

If anything, I think I found season 3 more enjoyable to watch just because of the development of the characters and somewhat better acting and directing from the first two seasons. Hopefully, Universal will step back up to the plate and make season 4's release with better polish...but I doubt it...nevertheless, I'll still pre-order it when its available!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to the roots of professional EMS.......2007-06-10

Great!Waited for that for years! Forget the totally overpriced videos
for 200 bucks and more.

But please: Show the boot to the country code and make them region code free !!!!
I think you would sell a lot more of them in Europe, it's cult for any
longtime EMS participant !!!!!
Saying more about Emergency would be a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Season 3.......2007-06-02

I loved it! I was dying to see this season after watching the first two and it was worth the wait. Now I can't wait for season 4 to come out. The memories this brings back, the best one of which is thinking how I used to sit with my Grandmother and watch each episode. She was such a big part of my life and I miss her so much. Watching these episodes now on DVD helps me to relive those times and to remember her in such a loving way. Thank you Universal and let's get the rest of the episodes out sooner!!

Randy Newman's opening song, "A Fool in Love," perfectly sets up the movie that follows. The lyrics begin, "Show me a man who is gentle and kind, and I'll show you a loser," before praising the man who takes what he wants. Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is the fool in love in Meet the Parents. Just as he's about to propose to his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo), he learns that her sister's fiancé asked their father, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), for permission to marry. Now he feels the need to do the same thing. When Greg meets Jack, he is so desperate to be liked that he makes up stories and kisses ass rather than having the courage of his convictions. It doesn't take an elite member of the CIA to see right through Greg, but that's precisely what Jack is. Directed by Jay Roach (the Austin Powers movies), Meet the Parents is an incredibly well-crafted comedy that stands in nice opposition to, say, the sloppy extremes of the Farrelly brothers. Stiller is great at playing up the uncomfortable comedy of errors, balancing just the right amount of selfishness and self-deprecating humor, while De Niro's Jack is funny as the hard-ass father who just wants a few straight answers from the kid. What makes the Jack character all the funnier is Blythe Danner as his wife, the Gracie to his George Burns, who is the true heart of the movie. Oh, and Owen Wilson turns in yet another terrific comic performance as Pam's ex-fiancé. --Andy Spletzer

4 out of 5 stars Meet the Parents.......2007-06-15

The movie 'Meet the Parents' is a humorous film. It is about a guy named Greg who is a nurse. How weird is that?! Well anyway he meets this girl named Pam Burns. They fall in love and all of that good stuff. But, Pam's dad is a bit suspicious and litterally sniffs out lies. He has this thing called the circle of trust. Greg is given a chance and is in it for.........a little while.

But Jack isn't too fond of his daughter's dates or boyfriends. Well anyway in the movie Pam's cat jinksy gets lost and its up to Greg to find him. Greg really didnt have any luck finding him. But, I think you should watch the movie and find out what happens. You'll love it. This movie is rated PG-13 and is about 2 hours long.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone who likes crude humor.

4 out of 5 stars Is Your Car Green? If So, You'll Like This Movie........2007-05-17

This movie is pretty easy to review. It's funny. Thats all you really have to know. It's not a deep movie, nor is it slapstick. It's just a well made laugher. Ben Stiller plays his part very well as the guy who doesn't know how to tell the truth and always gets the bad break. Robert De Niro is absolutly perfect as the father inlaw from hell whos always down your throat. Everything from his facial expressions to his genius lines are extremely funny. Even De Niro's family are uptight and very unlikable. This movie sounds bad and pointless when you hear the plot: bad stuff happening to Ben Stiller because of De Niro. But it's done very well and it's just a very enjoyable movie.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing comedy.......2007-01-02

This movie was highly recommended to me and I looked forward to a good comedy but never laughed once. The story could had every opportunity to be so much better; the nervous suitor going home to ask for his beloved's hand, especially with an actor like De Niro to intimidate him. Instead the movie relies on dumb cliches and corny lines that just aren't funny.

Making fun of, and marginalizing, the nursing profession with repeated "jokes" wasn't amusing, (the movie has the girl's parents repeatedly insinuate that he's a nurse because he wasn't smart enough to be a doctor) nor was the hero's bumbling. If he's really so smart, then who do something so stupid - and cruel - as kill a family pet and then try to cover it up with a "counterfeit"?? Not funny at all. Having the cat urinate on the beloved deceased grandmother's ashes was just gross, and that's only a few of many unentertaining gems in this feature.

I was really disappointed, and can't recommend this, especially as a family movie.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop laugh riot!.......2006-12-20

`Meet the Parents' is one of those classic comedies you can't help but love. Ben Stiller proved he's comic genius, Teri Polo burst onto the scene and Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner stole the entire show. I just have to say I'm so glad my father-in-law isn't THIS insane.

Ben Stiller plays Greg Focker, a male nurse who's about to pop the question to girlfriend Pam (Polo) but before he can get it out she gets word that her sister is engaged. What makes this a bad thing is that Greg then finds out how old fashioned Pam's father is and realizes before he can propose he needs to ask her fathers permission. Her father Jack (De Niro) is not just an intimidating man, he's an ex-member of the CIA who is bent on exposing Greg for the sap he's certain he must be.

With Greg trying too hard to impress everyone he ends up making things much worse for himself, lying to make himself look better, losing Jack's precious cat Jinxie, flooding the backyard with sewage and quite a few other embarrassing and damaging things. What makes this film so delightful is the chemistry between every actor here; no one seems miscast despite what you may think.

De Niro is fantastic here proving once and for all that he's one of our greatest actors, and Blythe Danner is just hilarious as Pam's mother Dina. Great supporting performances by Owen Wilson (proving yet again that paired with Stiller they are dynamic) and James Rebhorn who's hilarious as Dr. Larry Banks. Just pop this one in, sit back and get ready to laugh, laugh and laugh some more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy!.......2006-12-16

This is truly an exellent comedy movie to watch, without being corny. I am not a fan of corny un realistic movies and this one is truly hilarious without being corny at all. I really got a lot of laughs out of this one! I also enjoyed Meet The Fockers, but I liked this one a lot better. Meet The Fockers was a little corny but still very enjoyable to watch, I hope they come out with another Fockers movie! These movies are the best comedies that I have seen in a really long time!

This is a must for purchasing dvds! This is one movie that should be on dvd and still in the market! This special edition different from the original dvd release. The original dvd release as just the movie. This special edition featured full length intewrviews with the cast from 2005. They were also pictures of the cast, including the witch women. They weren't ugly, they were gorgous. I don't know why the director wanted to place those ugly masks over thier beauty, I mean not all witches are ugly!

Description

Hammer Films, one of the most celebrated horror studios in the history of cinema, presents 8 classic horror films in one collection. From Dracula to Frankenstein, werewolves to phantoms, the Hammer Horror Series showcases some of the most terrifying monsters in the history of cinema and features legendary performances by Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed and Janette Scott.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-07-03

This collection contains eight movies that propose a different kind of suspense and horror. The most of them are filmed in color, but there are two (Paranoia and Nightmare) that were done in black and white. Although the temes are classic of the horror movies( vampires, werewolfs, etc), the style of the cinematography is different.

If you like the good horror films, this is an excellent choice.

1 out of 5 stars Should have read the other reviews before purchasing............2007-06-06

I was so excited when my Hammer Horror Series DVDs came in the mail yesterday. But when I started watching it last night, during Curse of the Werewolf, it completely froze up. I should have read the other reviews of this before purchasing. I didn't even bother to watch any of the other films because I finally read all the negative reviews and am just going to send it back. I truly hope Universal has changed from DVD-18 to DVD-9, because I was really anticipating watching these!

I hope the problem has been fixed by this time.

4 out of 5 stars Night Creatures.......2007-05-13

Remembered from my youth, really enjoyed catching up with it again. I could not get my player to play without the subtitles but it didn't spoil it.

2 out of 5 stars hammerseries.......2007-04-11

save your cash.this is a letdown collection.don't misunderstand:that's not to say that hammer studios failed to live up to their usual great standards concerning the horror movie genre;it's the powers-that- be that determine which movies go into a particular collection.no studio makes great movies with every attempt;hammer's no exception to this rule.there's really only one good movie in this collection(evil of frankenstein):brides of dracula is also passable.everything else...junk.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Discs.......2007-03-25

While I enjoyed the movies in this set that I was able to access, I had to return it because neither Evil of Frankenstein nor Curse of the Werewolf would play properly. I should have been advised by the warnings of other customers who had similar problems. Live and learn.

3 out of 5 stars Opera : a well made Argento but not his best.......2007-06-15

Opera is worth seeing for horror fans, in my opinion, if only for the amazing scene where the bullet comes through the door and hits her in the eye. That scene alone is worth the rental if you are a gore fanatic.

Other than that this movie is overall very well made, like most of Argento's giallos, but its flaws lie in the storyline being too one dimensional, in my opinion. It's a feast for the eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A must for fans of Italian horror........2007-01-24

Terror at the opera was the first Dario Argento film I've ever seen back in 2001 and it was terrific, it has all the qualities that make a dario Argento film great from the excellent camera shots and angles and stylish directing from Argento to the great and gory death scenes. Alot of people said that this was a return to form after the failure of Phenomena which I thought was my personal favorite I mean it wasn't that bad, the film is a Gialo or murder mystery that takes place in the La Scala Opera House in Milan where strange things begin to happen as two people are mysteriously killed and a female member of the cast begins to experience a feeling of deja vu. The film has some great scenes in it including the killer himself who likes to stalk the female lead who ties her up while killing people right in front of her, he places a bunch of needles so she won't have to close her eyes. The clever use of a crow in the opera was also great as it starts flying and swirling all over the place and Dario uses a special camera teqniche, the best death scene has to be the gunshot through the keyhole and it was quite bloody as well as the other death scenes. It's an excellent film thats very thrilling and has a surprise twist ending involving the serial killer although it wasn't scary and the acting could have been better but then again what do you expect from an Italian horror film its not theatre acting, Dario Argento adds alot of class to most of his films so thats good enough for me. Overall I have to say that it was one of my favorites and I would include this along with Tenebrea and Zombie in my top ten Italian horror films of all time, its definitely worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars Gore and Humor at the Opera........2006-07-06

Dario Argento's Terror at the Opera is simply about a psychotic hooded killer who terrorizes an opera diva whom he adores. The opera diva is Betty, a young singer who gets a chance to star in Macbeth when the original lead has an accident and breaks her leg. Her powerful (not) performances in Macbeth attracts the killer who randomly kidnaps Betty, ties her up and tapes a row of sharp pins under her eyes forcing her to watch him commit murder. Later on in the film we find out why he does this to her aswell as the killers secret identity. Terror at the Opera is more of a slasher rather than a horror, (as there is no real scary moments in the entire film) but still a good horror.

TATO is a very enjoyable horror/slasher. For the usual horror fanatic, it does deliver as it is gory and strangely at times very humorous. The camera work is great in this film as it exaggerates the gore by simply zooming in on a penetration of a knife or when the camera becomes the eyes of Betty, showing us what she sees through those sharp needles taped under her eyes. Apart from gore, TATO also has a mystery factor. As the film progresses introducing new characters and reminding us of old suspicious characters, the viewer soon begins to wonder who is the killer. And of course this does lead to a twist at the end.

With plenty of violence, mystery, thrills and humor, Dario Argento's well paced feature will not dissapoint. One bad thing I can say about this film is that the acting is quite bad, but that maybe the result of the terrible dubbing. However, Terror at the Opera is still an entertaining film and well worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars Very Very Good movie.......2006-02-17

This film is A VERY good one..it has mystery, horror, style good acting. The crows annoyed me to bits but that was part and parcel of what made the film so creapy. The camera work is second to none and i believe is ahead of it's time;how they found the killer is beyond me but even that was a good stroke. The lead actress was a bit over the top with the noise she made and she to me failed to cut it as the opera singer type and she looked stilted while performng the opera scenes but she was nice in her role.

Filled with twists and turns it's ending rivals any i've seen for drama .

This is highly recommended by me..highly.

The score is just awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah!!.......2005-12-31

"Opera" aka Terror At The Opera was the first Argento movie I ever saw. It was fantastic! Great storyline, great gore, great Argento style. This movie flowed, music was all heavy metal- yeah!! You have to buy the 2-disc version of this film so you will also have the soundtrack. The soundtrack in this movie is outstanding. Great murders, great gore, great acting, great everything. Argento should be very proud of this film.

Not to be confused with Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, which aired in the mid-'80s, or the several made-for-TV movies produced during that same decade, Mike Hammer Private Eye offers all 26 episodes (totaling more than twenty hours and four double-sided discs) from the single season (1997-98) in which Mickey Spillane's pulp P.I. was revived for a syndicated series.

What all of the above have in common is Stacy Keach in the title role; and despite the many Mike Hammers (including Armand Assante, Brian Keith, Ralph Meeker, Darren McGavin, and even author Spillane himself) who preceded him, Keach makes the part his own. He was in his mid-fifties by then, not exactly light on his feet anymore, and sporting a hairpiece that does him no favors. But in Keach's hands, Hammer is an appealing hero, flawed but likable. This time around he's dealing with computers, Internet porn, tobacco company whistle blowers, talk radio blowhards, and other funky features of the late 20th Century, along with the usual whores, junkies, and assorted lowlifes. But Hammer is still a tough-talking, hard-punching lug, engaging in macho repartee ("What're you, drunk?" "Nah, just thirsty"), dispensing world-weary voice-overs ("Art? I couldn't tell a fresco from a Fresca"), and remaining fiercely loyal to his friends and helpers (including Shannon Whirry as sexy secretary Velda and Shane Conrad as kid sidekick Nick) as he doggedly seeks and destroys the bad guys ("I'm not a killer, Mike. I'm a pervert!").

Too bad the rest of Mike Hammer Private Eye (whose meager bonus features include a recent interview with the star) doesn't quite measure up to Keach's engaging performance. The budget for this series was clearly lacking; production values are pretty poor (with cheesy interiors that bring to mind Jack Webb's Dragnet, produced some thirty years earlier), and a good number of the supporting actors are less than stellar. But whereas one could never quite be sure if Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday was as square as he seemed, there's no doubt that Keach and everyone else involved have their tongues planted firmly in cheek, which makes Mike Hammer Private Eye a genuine hoot. At the very least, any show that uses "Harlem Nocturne" for a theme song has got to be worth checking out. --Sam Graham

Description

Created by acclaimed detective noir author Mickey Spillane, private eye Mike Hammer (Stacy Keach) is a hard-boiled, two fisted detective who mixes it up with tough guys on a mission, clean and dirty cops on the beat and drop-dead gorgeous dames with plenty of attitude. A steamy throwback to the classic film noir thrillers of the '50s, Mike Hammer is one tough cookie.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 2nd Mike Hammer Not As Good As First.......2007-03-17

When I bought this video I thought it was the 1980's series. Although it has its good points, I would not recommend it. There is more violence as well as sexual aspects that make it more unappealing to me. Stacy Keach does a good job, but the plots are predictable and the narration by Keach
is so complicated that it is hard to keep up with. Again I have enjoyed it, but it is not nearly as good as the Mike Hammer series in the 1980's.
The fact that it did not last long on the air should tell you something about it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining Hammer series from the 90's.......2007-01-20

Stacey Keach returned to the role of Mike Hammer in this fun 90's TV series. Keach is perfect as Mike Hammer and it's nice to see him play a slightly older version of the character. It's a blast watching Mike deal with modern devices like computers. The tougher tone of the 90's series also adds to the fun. There's also plenty of comedy in Private Eye. I'm a big fan of Keach's 80's Hammer series and I like this 90's version too. Mike Hammer, Private Eye is great fun.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE REAL THING!.......2006-08-07

Except for Stacy Keach, this show was a complete bomb
I had bought the dvd at an auction....because when I was looking at the credits, Lindsay Bloom, who played Velda, was listed....but to my surprise (yikes) this wasn't the Mike Hammer from 1984
Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Spillane's Best Character EVER.......2006-07-08

What I've always liked about Mike Hammer, is he's down to earth. I love CSI, and I've got perfect vision, but even I would have a hard time spotting the micro sized evidence CSI agents see with their naked eyes from across a room. Come on guys, I know it's just a show, but you've got to be a little realistic, yet that's just what they do. They walk into a crime scene and see a single hair all the way across the room in the carpet. I mean come on!!! Now back to Mike Hammer, He wins most of his fights, and loses a few (even some of the best fighters in the world have lost a few). He collects baseball cards, eats pizza hot or cold, and loves a good looking lady. He figures out his cases by deduction, logic, and luck, and he's often behind on the rent. The series has well timed action, but not overly done like many shows today, and it's not nearly as gory(CSI has gone too far even though it is a favorite program). There's drama, horror, comedy, and of course Spice. And no other actor has ever portrayed the part better than STACY KEACH (bring back the series America!!!)
I've watched these episodes so many times I feel I could quote them word for word. I love'em, and if you like "as real as it gets" detective stories, you'll love it too.

The "Magnum Farce" of Sledge Hammer aims at deserving targets and scores a bull's eye every time. Thanks to DVD, one of the funniest, most unconventional sitcoms of the 1980s has been gloriously revived, with an abundance of bonus features that fans are going to love. This is sweet revenge given the show's original ABC time-slot, buried under Miami Vice and Dallas on Friday nights, but creator-producer Alan Spencer's savvy spoof of Dirty Harry had critical praise in its favor when it premiered (with a senseless laugh track, mercifully deleted here) on September 23, 1986. Played to perfection by David Rasche and introduced with an infectious Danny Elfman theme song, Sledge is a trigger-happy male chauvinist pig (er, cop) in mismatched clothes who thinks The Deer Hunter is a comedy, sleeps with his .44 Magnum (called simply "Gun"), drives a bullet-riddled sedan with an "I ♥ Violence" bumper sticker, and somehow manages to always catch his quarry. "I'm a nihilist, not a stylist" he says (in the hilarious episode "Sledgepoo"), and that puts him at reckless odds with his lovely, karate-kicking partner Dori (played with flawless aplomb by former soap-star Anne-Marie Martin) and the vocally volcanic Capt. Trunk (Harrison Page, a slow-burn master and vital ingredient to the show's excellent casting).

Partly inspired by Get Smart!, Spencer and a host of talented writers and directors dished up consistent laughs and daring anarchy, challenging broadcast standards with topnotch spoofs of hit movies (in episodes titled "Witless," "Jagged Sledge," "The Color of Hammer," etc.) while familiar guest stars like John Vernon, Brion James, Clint Howard, Michael De Barres, and Mary Woronov raised the comedy quotient even higher. After a deliberately outrageous, go-for-broke season finale it's a miracle that the low-rated Sledge Hammer! was renewed for a second season, but Anchor Bay's DVDs do justice to the show's enduring quality, and Spencer's commentaries (on four episodes) rank among the funniest ever recorded (one of them during an earthquake, no less). All in all, this is one of the most delightful DVD surprises of 2004, with more fun to come in season 2. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In the fall of 1986, an unsuspecting TV nation met a new kind of comedy hero who made Rambo look like Pee Wee Herman. David Rasche starred as the trigger-happy lawman whose hatred of criminal scum and yogurt eatin' creeps was matched only by his love of excessive force and a .44 Magnum. Over the next two seasons, this hilariously deranged lampoon of DIRTY HARRY and plenty of other targets became one of the most notorious series in television history and launched a rabid cult of fans that grows to this day. This is SLEDGE HAMMER! The complete first season of SLEDGE HAMMER! is now newly re-mastered (including removal of the laugh track) and loaded with an arsenal of exclusive extras that features uncensored footage, all-new interviews with stars David Rasche, Harrison Page and Anne-Marie Martin, audio commentaries and more, all given the "Hammer" seal of approval by Series Creator & Executive Producer Alan Spencer.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic comedy.......2007-05-14

This was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and I'm glad it made it to DVD!

5 out of 5 stars "Trust me, I know what I'm writing !".......2007-05-05

....I'm standing @ the scene of a liqour store robbery w/ the man beside
me, inspector Sledge Hammer. Inspector Hammer, will you tell us what happen-
ed ? Certainly Miss. I was in the store when two thugs entered & threatened
the owner w/ shotguns. @ that time, I drew my Magnum & killed them both.
Then I bought some eggs, milk & some of those little cocktail weenies...
Inspector, was what you did in the store absolutely necessary?? Yes, I
had no groceries @ all...." this was our 1st glance into the twisted,tact-
less & chauvinistic world of Sledge the man. We couldn't help but laugh @
his utter disregard of human life! What about the needless violence, such
as when he blew up an entire building to get 1 sniper? Or, when he made the purse-snatcher beat himself up? Truly in a league all by himself! I was only 12 when the show debuted, but I immediately got the meaning that
creator Alan Spencer was quietly conveying & I remember almost choking on
a cup of water, I was laughing so hard ! So sad the original shows have
to struggle in such a cookie- cutter business(Alan, I share your frust-
rations!) Sledge Hammer was such a show- kitschy, even somewhat predict-
able (" I don't take things lying down", then passing out on a couch--
"Kiss of the spider-woman"), yet it really touched a nerve w/ millions
of us who have a sense of off-beat humor, like Spencer. The 1st season
didn't have much in the way of guest-stars, although John Vernon (best
known as the mayor in the 1st Dirty Harry movie) did star in the Pilot.
And who other than Spencer himself is floating in the background in many
episodes!(That is his hand grabbing the newspapers in the pilot). Let's
not forget Lewis Arquette (Father of the clan) starring as a "manynote"
in "Witless". What else can be said? Great acting, great story plots("All
shook up" is one of the most original plots ever!), as well as cool loca-
tions( a motel w/ Swedish masseuses). Great bonus materials, incl. comm-
entaries, the ORIGINAL unedited pilot( 10 mins. longer), plus bumpers &
previews(originally aired on ABC in '86). Here's a treasure hunt: See if
you can find a common denominator in the last commentaries on both sea.
1&2- it is quite an amazing occurence! ( " The Spa Who Loved Me"; "Here's
To You, Mrs. Hammer" respectively). Let's turn OFF those scumsuckers
on our t.v.'s and watch some "REAL family entertainment" ! TRUST ME, I KNOW WHAT I'M RECOMMENDING!

4 out of 5 stars Just as I remembered Sledge.......2007-01-18

A special nostalgia set for my family. The first episode seems to always be the best, though. Ol' Sledge is back again, and what a hoot!

5 out of 5 stars Cancelled too early.......2007-01-16

This was one of the greatest comedy shows. It didn't pull any punches, and provided endless laughs the whole family could enjoy. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Clever parody.......2007-01-16

Sledhe Hammer is a very clever parody of the "Dirty Harry" type movies. It is the only show that causes me consistently to laugh out loud.
