Jon Gries (Men in Black) and Saturday Night Live's Garrett Morris star in this bizarre yet compelling little road movie. Sunny Holiday (Gries) dreams of being a singer. Rather than taking a more direct route, he works on "building his audience" by hitting tiny karaoke contests across the country. Gries underplays Sunny well, making him neither too good nor too bad a singer; his dreams seem reasonable and ludicrous at the same time. Morris makes Les a beautiful counterpoint--someone who's either a shrewd genius or completely nuts. The story line is an odd one that falls apart a bit at the end, but is nonetheless worth watching. Much like Sunny and Les, Jackpot is weird but surprisingly likable. --Ali Davis

When local wag Jackie O'Shea (Ian Bannen) discovers that one of his neighbors in the village of Tulaigh Mohr is a lottery winner he sees a chance to share in the wealth. Things get complicated when Jackie and his pal Michael O'Sullivan (David Kelly) discover that the winner, Ned Devine, died of shock at the very moment he learned of becoming a millionaire. Undaunted, Jackie and Michael dispose of the lucky stiff and hatch a plot to impersonate him and claim the prize. Soon the whole village is involved and the plot rapidly thickens.
This film has been compared to The Full Monty, but it lacks the vein of desperation that added depth to that film. Instead, Waking Ned Devine is closer in tone to classic British comedies like Whisky Galore!, with its cast of eccentrics gleefully conspiring to outwit the authorities. Those with a low tolerance for twinkly eyed Irish charm might be tempted to steer clear, although the movie is saved, for the most part, by its central performances. Bannen is superb as an old man who is clearly hungry for any excitement he can drum up and David Kelly is remarkable as his scrawny sidekick. Kelly has had a long career as a character actor in film and television, but here he has a chance to really let loose. His naked motorcycle ride is a marvelous set piece and in all of his other scenes his twitchy, perfectly timed performance quite simply steals the movie. --Simon Leake
Description
When Ned Devine dies from shock after winning the lottery, two longtime friends, Micheal and Jackie, discover the body and agree Ned would want them to benefit from his good luck. They embark upon an outrageous scheme to claim the ticket but first they have to get all the townsfolk to go along with their plan!

Great Movie!.......2007-06-08
"Charming" Irish movie with very good acting and beautiful imagery. Clever concept and entertaining from beginning to end. Seems to give an accurate portrayal of small-town Irish living. I loved the actors! The music is wonderful too.
Masterful.......2007-04-26
If you ever wanted to visit a small one street village in Ireland and get a peek into the characters that live there, this is the movie for you. If you have ever lived in Ireland and miss home, than this is the movie for you!!!!
refreshung, very funny.......2007-03-19
We seldom, if ever, go to the movies any more. Not willing to pay so much for so much garbage. We are older and Irish so we appreciate the personalities and the humor of this movie. Also just loved the scenery. Having been to Ireland many years ago, it brought back memories of the beautiful countryside, the simplicity of life there etc. Our son had seen the movie and recommended it.

Amiable Irishman Joe (Scottish comedian Billy Connolly), after an all-time mother of a bad day, decides to leave his adopted New York home and seek adventure. Unfortunately, he runs into Hush (Sharon Stone) and gets far more adventure than he bargained for. Beautiful Joe is a well-intentioned film, and that is nearly all that can be said for it. It tries to be both comedy and drama, but is comfortable as neither. Stone's character is the standard beautiful-but-messed-up-woman-who-needs-rescuing who is for some mystifying reason supposed to be appealing. And yes, of course she has a mute son who just might speak if only he had the right reason. Stone, who stretches herself here, is clearly eager to play a character: she mugs, she drawls, she wiggles, and she cries. Not a scrap of scenery escapes her gullet; at times her attempts at comedy actually become sort of upsetting. Ally McBeal's Gil Bellows turns in a similarly inept and cartoonish "comic" performance. Beautiful Joe's one saving grace is Connolly, who manages to rise above his fellow cast members and the bizarre editing to turn in a charming, dignified performance. --Ali Davis

Stone and Connolly a Winning Team.......2005-01-31
This 2000 black comedy from the United Kingdom began as if it were going to be a tearjerker, but with the right touch came off as an inspirational film where two people find each other at difficult moments and eventually happiness. Billy Connolly, the world famous comic from Glasgow, and sexy Sharon Stone comprise the initial odd couple that in the end fulfill each other's needs.
Connolly's plight is far more tragic than Stone's in that he is handed a potential death sentence by his New York City doctor. At the very time that he needs sympathy and understanding he comes home and finds his wife sharing his bed with another man. She tells him bluntly about her intention to seek a divorce because she finds him totally boring. He does not tell her what he has just heard from his doctor.
The scene then shifts to Churchill Downs in Kentucky, where Connolly has gone to gain a needed change of scenery. He is betting on the races and doing it foolishly, without any semblance of strategy. Horseplayer Sharon Stone sees him there. After latching on to him as a potential means of helping her financially, she gives him up when he hands all his track winnings to two nuns, causing her to conclude that he is a loser as she walks him away and leaves him standing in the distance watching her.
Connolly meets Stone again at the strip club where she formerly danced and now supervises. He catches her at a bad time, when an old live in love that now works for the mob is seeking to obtain money she owes. Eventually Connolly takes Stone home. Just as she is again about to end their association she realizes what an effective housekeeper he is when she is at the club and that her two young children like him.
Just as Connolly, Stone, and the two children are making very much like a family a problem ensues and the mob is in hot pursuit. For one thing, the local Kentucky mob boss played by Ian Holm has mistaken Connolly for a famous New York syndicate head, has let him off the hook on the debt, and has angered his superiors. Gil Bellows does a superb job of playing the highly incompetent former love of Stone who invests the role of enforcer with Inspector Clousseau comedic clumsiness. Holm is plenty clumsy himself and the film is one that focuses on comic deficiencies of the mob figures rather than ruthless and violent efficiency.
The Kentucky mob ultimately pursues Connolly and Stone to Las Vegas after she has told her girlfriend where she is going, never dreaming that she will report back to her enemies. Eventually the pair will find happiness after some unique surprise twists involving the mob figures.
Stephen Metcalfe wrote a fine script and directed as well. He deftly spun two character arcs in the film, that of Connolly abandoning his former cautiously boring demeanor as he becomes associated with Stone. At the same time, Stone, while bringing Connolly out, admires his stable qualities and tones down her erratic conduct and savage temper.
Help!.......2004-03-20
Help! Can anyone help me find the soundtrack to this movie! A movie with such great music should'nt go unheard!
One of the worst movies of all time.......2003-10-08
The somewhat charming presence of Billy Connolly notwithstanding, "Beautiful Joe" is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I took the DVD out from the public library; I should have known.
The story cannot be dumber: Joe, a florist originally from Dublin and recently living in the Bronx (my hometown!), finds his wife banging the plumber, after he finds out he's got a brain tumor, so he heads off to find some adventures. He meets Alice (Sharon), who's basically this trashy woman with two kids (one mulatto and the other silent), at the race tracks, and immediately falls in love with her. How believable! How adventurous. Anyway, Joe goes off to talk some sense into local hooligan and loan shark George the Geek, who mistakes Joe for a famous Manhattanian-Irish hitman Beautiful Joe (who turns out to be Joe's drinking buddy Happy). When George finds out the truth, he's set on killing both Joe and Alice. So JOe and Alice take the kids and flee.
The rest of the film gets even more boring and predictable. The movie pretends to be a romance story, but there's very little chemistry between the two main actors. Sharon puts up incredibly bad acting here. Alice says, "oh I'm growing fat and old," and that's exactly how the formerly-lovely Sharon looks in the film. That's not even one-tenth of the problem if not for her poor performance. It's evident that this is not a role she wanted. She's in either for the money, or to fulfill some studio contract. The two kids are annoying, to say the least. When the boy Lee talks toward the end, after Joe rescues Alice from the gansters in Vegas and realizes that Happy (Beautiful Joe) is just a mob associate of his ex-father-in-law, the head of the Irish crime family (Joe wasn't aware of it), Lee philosophizes about life by quoting from a bunch of TV talk shows and the stupidity of this scene just totally stunned me. I never thought Hollywood could come out with something so utterly brainless. In the end, Joe gets a successful surgery and, guess what, lives happily ever after with ex-trashy woman and her two abnormal kids.
This is just absolutely one of the worst movies ever made.
Disappointing Romantic Comedy Lacks Power to Make Us Care.......2003-04-21
Before her 2 year hietus due to illness, Sharon Stone stared in this romantic comedy with Billy Connolly, as a single mother called "Hush," whose life is full of messy relations with men and gambling. The film is directed by Stephern Metcalfe, and is the first job as director, who has been working as scriptwriter in Hollywood. But you will be impressed with somebody else.
The film is, in fact, about an amiable Irishaman living in America named Joe, who is effectively played by Billy Connolly, best known for the film "Mrs. Brown" opposite Judi Dench. Joe, seeing that his life as a good-natured flowerist is too boring, decides to travel, and meets Hush. After several misadventures including horse-racing, mud-wrestling, and an encounter with local mobsters (Gil Bellows, TV's "Ally McBeal" and Ian Holm as his boss), Hush comes to like him, so does Joe, among the kids whose life has been so far neglected by Hush.
The best thing you can find about "Beautiful Joe" is Billy Connolly's amicable portrayal of Joe, who fares among the clithed moments better than you expect. We can understand that people around him all like him, as the film depicts. Even Ian Holm's Hannibal-like caricature of gangster looks funny before Connolly's incredibly innocent talk, and there are some good moments in the film, especially when those veteran actors are allowed to do some tricks before us.
But too bad that no one among the crew seems to have pointed out that this kind of film fails to interest us when it looks as if going automatically. I do not see why Joe should fall for Hush, who treats him very bad at first, and keeps on chasing her. The gangster plot is too familiar after our seeing films such as "Life Less Ordinary" or "Get Shorty" and many, many others, and the inclusion of kids is also too clithed. Or, if I may sound too harsh, let me say that at least they should have give them (kids) more decent dialogues.
Sharon Stone seems miscast at first, but actually her acting is not so bad as you may think. It is rather her constant change of hair-styles and costumes that annoys us, making us wonder why these changes are needed. Actually, she was much better in the similar role in "The Mighty" (and duely nominated for Golden Globe), but here her heavy make-ups look as if to show the lack of confidence. They should not have done that.
As a whole, "Beautiful Joe" is a disappinting film because of its lack of originality and confidence. So, why gangsters? The film has one saving grace Billy Connolly which they should have used more effectively.

The Killers are Out There.......2003-05-26
A struggling taxi company has struggling taxi drivers with heavy emotional issues, add to this a serial killer who is after the taxi drivers and apparently enjoys killing them at night for sport, and what do you have? An instant movie classic? Perhaps not. But with good acting by Glover, Grier, and Rodriguez, you end up with a fine movie. This movie shows a colorful but desperate world of the working class in a big city. There is everything here: love, childhood trauma, fear of commitment, prostitution, and, of course, murder. There are even stories of Bosnian genocide!
We are introduced to a cab driver from Bosnia who is not only one of the worst natural drivers in the world, but also incredibly distracted. This means that every day he has an accident. He is so accident prone that he ends up having to leave the country and his love (who prostitutes herself at a bathhouse) and go back to Bosnia.
Not to be outdone, Glover's and Rodriguez's characters resort to extreme violence when they feel physically or emotionally pushed. The movie is original, and its host of ethnic characters makes it fun and colorful. The ending is also not your typical happy ending. It is not that unhappy. It is just not typical. I recommend the movie.
it's just not good...........2003-04-16
After seeing Girlfight I was excited about the new young actress Michelle Rodriguez. If anyone needs to see a phenomenal debut film, that would be the one. Girlfight marked Rodriguez as a new talent to watch. Her subsequent films (Fast and the Furious, Resident Evil, and even Blue Crush) have all played on the tough girl theme that was introduced in Girlfight. I was trying to find all of the movies in which she had acted in the hopes that a performance would measure up to her first. While nothing has measured up to her first movie, in my search for her movies, I found something called 3 AM. I had never heard of this movie before, and since it co-starred Danny Glover and Pam Grier, I figured this was some independent movie that slipped under the radar. I gave it a rent and sat down to watch it. When the opening credits rolled, I found out that this was a Showtime movie. It probably never had a theatrical release and until it came out on DVD was likely only shown on Showtime. While there is excellent programming on cable (Band of Brothers, The Sopranos, etc), finding out that it is a made for Showtime movie does not inspire confidence, regardless of the actors involved.
The story follows several cabdrivers in New York City. There is a serial killer out there who is targeting cabbies, and there is a lot of fear amongst the cabbies wondering who is going to be next. As the killings continue, it hits closer to home as a cabdriver friend is killed. Danny Glover plays a cabdriver who is in love with Pam Grier (a waitress). Michelle Rodriguez plays a young cabbie trying to pay her rent, but is haunted by visions of her past. Yes, Rodriguez is still playing to type as her character is the tough girl, somewhat angry. She plays it well, but at some point Michelle is going to have to stop playing variations on the same character.
This is a fairly disappointing movie. Despite being acted by some top line talents and being produced (with a cameo appearance) by Spike Lee, this movie is just not very good. I wanted very much to like this movie, but I just couldn't. Unless you are trying to complete a collection of movies starring your favorite actor, give this one a pass and spend your money on something good,

Hated It.......2004-02-04
Too many cuss words, and an improbable plot made this movie a complete waste of time. Don't torture yourself. Watch Scotland, Pa instead, if you want to see a smart little off-the-beat movie.
It's like Candy.......2003-03-17
The actor singing Cameo's "Candy" is worth the price of admission. There are some hella funny scenes in this movie-- and Garrett Morris should have won an Academy Award for this character.
American Idol.......2003-03-16
This movie is the "Five Easy Pieces" of our time. Except that Jackpot was shot in 15 days and for 400k (budget from commentary track) which gives it a brilliant Cassevetes feel. What I love about this film is that it really depicts a regular guy trying to become a singer, this is so American Idol! Maybe the contestants on that show can watch "Jackpot" and see where they are all going to end up... selling soap door to door.
Immature work.......2002-10-04
The only reason why I watched this movie was because I was so impressed with the Polish brothers' "Twin Falls Idaho," but this movie really disappointed me.
The first hour started out so so but had some tiny potential for getting better. It had an interesting premise, a karoake want to be singer traveling on the road with his sidekick. But then something happened completely frivolous to the plot. He meets a teenage Lolita type character for a few painful minutes. The Polish brothers just had to let this into have their fun. This isn't a serious Nabokov study and doesn't help the movie at all, easily could have been written out.
the Wichita linemen call home.......2002-09-23
JACKPOT is one of those films that come under the "unusual" category. Written and directed by the Polish brothers, Mark and Michael, we can certainly qualify their so-called "different" credentials. This is the eclectic story of two wayward loners acting out their adolescent pipedream of future stardom. Crisscrossing the western United States on the karaoke circuit, we come to understand and share this dream of Sonny (John Cries) and his manager Lester (wonderfully played by Garrett Morris). Juxtaposing scenes from the past, present, and future, it seems everyone wants to chew some verbal butt on Sonny's irrepressible lifestyle. Humor and blind luck turn into allies as we start to warm up to their numerous pratfalls. Dropping our idiosyncratic characters into one deadpan situation after another, we almost (and I use that sparingly) build some support and hopeful outcome for unsung heroes. IF becomes a mighty word as situations spin away on a thin dime (literally). Wonderful cameos by Daryl Hannah, Mac Davis, Peggy Lipton, Anthony Edwards, and Crystal Bernard help lend this film credence and amenity. Think left of center and you're right on target. Granting a wide berth, JACKPOT strikes quirky dead center. Like David Lynch, their predecessor and mentor, the Polish bothers have comes up with another true original. Fame and fortune has never been farther.

Description
Roland is a small time con who's tired of his penny ante payoffs. Richard fancies himself a big time businessman, but lately the only thing big time about him is the debt he's in. These two men, whose lives could not be more different, become unlikely partners in a kidnapping caper where no one is quite what they seem and everyone has an angle. In the end they all could walk away with a piece of the action, but in Atlantic City everything is a game of chance and a bad hand is only a deal away.
Customer Reviews:
complex drama with an odd twist.......2006-03-12
Very different from your typical daramatic fare, good acting and story give this compelling drama a compellingness that is refreshing and absorbing.
The opposite of its promises.......2001-07-15
This is an awful movie! If you will note I titled this review "The Opposite of its promises", and the reason being is that, first of all it shows Danny DeVito on the front of the cover as if he is the main character, and yet he barely has a part, posing as the bartender at a pool and is only seen for abot forty five seconds. Also it says it is heart-felt and funny and is none of those things! The actors and actresses do a horrible job posing as their charachter and don't seem to have any depth or feeling at all. If you read the back of the jacket it says that it is about a man with almost no money and many debts to pay off and that he kidnaps a rich man's kids to get money, that is the entire film and it isn't even done well, in fact I've made this putrid film sound much more exciting and dramatic than it is. The film has absolutely no depth. It has no comedy, drama, romance, excitement or any thing like that. It is no doubt one of the worst films ever.
