This video is the sequel to the beloved children's book and video Anne of Green Gables. It continues the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong young orphan in 1890s Canada, whose hot temper matches her red hair. Anne of Green Gables told of Anne's adoption by an elderly brother and sister, Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew Cuthbert, and her childhood adventures in the idyllic village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne of Avonlea takes up the story soon after Matthew's death, when Anne has graduated from college. It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland. Girls seven and older, as well as adults, will enjoy this intelligent and beautifully made film, first shown on PBS. It's filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters--including self-reliance, generosity, and perseverance. It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human. Anne's struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students are both thought provoking and entertaining. Girls will also enjoy Anne's romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower. The film is beautifully filmed, and the costumes and settings portray an idyllic time and place. The cast is excellent. What a wonderful and sweet show. It's rare that you find a movie with substance and heart. At the end of the show, you just sit back and feel satisfied and enriched by the whole beauty of the characters. A must see for anyone wanting to feel happy and encouraged.

I'm a HUGE LM Montgomery fan. I have read every single book of hers and I even travelled to Prince Edward Island last year on a vacation. Seriously a huge fan. And this film adaptation while not being exact is seriously as good as it gets. Megan Follows is AMAZING and I just love the entire supporting cast. I can't watch this without tearing up! Everything is just as it should be...they really did capture the heart and soul of PEI that Montgomery was always trying to convey and ANNE is brought to life on the screen.

You will love this and so will your kids.

Great film! Continuing the growing up of Anne was a wonderful experience, just about on par with Anne of Green Gables (first installment) a series of movies I've watched many times over the years. I'm happy to say I now have all three on DVD's in my collection. Great acting, actors and story line. I recommend it to friends and family whenever the subject of favorite movies come up. I recommend it highly to one and all. The third DVD (The Continuing Story) is good too. I recommend buying all three DVD's separately rather than in the boxed set. The boxed set sometimes has the wrong DVD instead of the 3rd installment.

I fell in LOVE with this story when I was a teenager, and I love it now as an adult. The scenery is beautiful and the characters are endearing. This one's a keeper!

I was happy to find these beautifully done movies on DVD, but I was very disappointed with the transfer quality. And when I went to Walmart the next week and saw them there for about $20.00 less than I paid (less shipping) online, I was really unhappy.

If you're going to bother selling something on DVD wait until you can do it in the quality that the public has come to expect when purchasing something on this medium. Its with great effort that I am even able to conjure up two whole stars.

Third movie is radically different from the books.......2006-01-21

The movies are all pretty good, but the third movie is a dramatic plot departure from the book series, where it is Anne's children who serve in WWI. If you can overlook that, the movie is well made and worth watching. If you have not read the books, then view the movies FIRST and you won't be disappointed.

I could not disagree more with the last review. Unlike many movies whose sequels are disappointing to the original production, Anne of Green Gables keeps you engrossed all the way through. I have not read the books, but I was able to appreciate the movie series as its own work of art. The last movie, "Anne of Green Gables the Continuing Story" is catered more toward adults than the first two (though adults will appreciate the first two as well). But the third movie is set in a real historical setting of World War I. This viewer was captured from the first scene until the last moment as I shared in the true-to-life pain and fear and sacrifice of the people of that time and as my heart was uplifted in seeing true love in action, self-sacrificial love for a committed husband and wife, as well as friends and neighbors (and even enemies). The story not only pulls the heart strings, it also teaches much-needed lessons of true love and sacrifice for this generation. This series is one of a kind, and the final movie caps them all.

Megan Follows as the beloved Anne of Green Gables.......2005-06-05

I picked up this pair of DVDs after seeing the musical version of "Anne of Green Gables" performed in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. Both mini-series are worth 5 stars all by themselves, especially the first, which is a class adaptation of the beloved novel by L.M. Montgomery. But fans of Anne should pick up the DVD versions even if they have the two series on videotape because of the commentary tracks.

"Anne of Green Gables" is the story of a redheaded orphan girl, Anne Shirley (Megan Follows), who ends up being adopted by old maid Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst) and her bachelor brother Matthew (Richard Farnsworth). She talks too much and is constantly getting into trouble, but those are the primary reasons why legions of readers and veiwers have fallen in love with the character and this production. Anne finds a "bosom companion" in Diana Barry (Schuyler Grant) and a friendly rival at school in Gilbert Blythe (Jonathan Crombie) as she goes repeatedly from "the depths of dispair" to being overjoyed at having found a home.

In terms of DVD extras there is the audition Follows did for the part of Anne, which is fascinating to see her first attempts at nailing the character of Anne Shirley. You will notice considerably changes in her actual performance, but the raw talent is amply displayed. Then there are missing scenes, most of which have to do with the wife of Reverend Allen. It seems the production was co-produced by a German company and so there was this extended subplot with Mrs. Allen, played by a German actress, that was fully integrated into the Germany version of "Anne of Green Gables."

Finally, there is Directors Commentary from Kevin Sullivan and the film's editor, although the latter is there mainly to given the director someone to talk to during the almost four hour film. The commentary is certainly fascinating, however, for all these fascinating tidbits about the production you will find yourself surprised from time to time that Kevin Sullivan often does not have a clue about the story of Anne and why it works. He expresses surprise, for example, that audiences find the scene where Anne thanks Matthew for the dress with puffed sleeves to be so emotional. Sheesh. She is looking at him with absolute love and devotion in her eyes and he says, "Don't you like it." Of course it gets to you. But not Sullivan apparently.

"Anne of Green Gables" ended with Anne on speaking terms with Gilbert, but still the only person in Avonlea who does not know that the two of them are meant to live happily ever after. "Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel" is adapted by writer-director Kevin Sullivan from the second, third, and fourth novels in the series, drawing primarily on the last one, "Anne of Windy Poplars" for her experiences teaching at a girl's school. There is also a major subplot regarding a rich widower who seems to offer Anne everything she has ever wanted that is largely Sullivan's creation; Morgan Harris (Frank Converse) is much older than Anne's other beau in the series. The important thing is that he keeps the ending of "Anne of the Island," which provides an emotionally satisfying conclusion to the story (proceed to the third mini-series, "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story" at your own risk because it has nothing to do with Montgomery's stories).

Again, the DVD extras make this well worth the having. There is Sullivan's commentary and a few missing scenes, several of which are alternative takes, and some behinds the scenes still photographs, but the chief charm here is listening to director Kevin Sullivan talk to the film's editor about the production (she does not have much to say; I think she was there to give Sullivan a real person to talk to during the almost four hour film). From this commentary you will learn what he took (and why) from the three Lucy Maud Montgomery novels this film was based on, Dame Wendy Hiller's accident that almost made her quit the film and the scene she insisted Sullivan shoot for her, and loads of other fascinating little details about the production and the performances.

This is certainly an above average commentary track and fans of the film will not be disappointed. It would be nice if these DVDs featured closed-captioning, which I like to turn on while doing the director's commentary, but despite this rather odd omission, I think fans will enjoy this addition to their collection. Besides, it is not like we have not already pretty much memorized the entire show. Final Note: If you watch the opening scene of "Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel" or whatever it is being called this time around) you will see Anne Shirley bicycle by Dalvay by the Sea, the "White Sands" hotel from the "Avonlea" series. I mention this because I stayed at the hotel for a couple of days at the start of my honeymoon on PEI and it is as beautiful as it looks.

I love Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables Books and I loved the first two movies in this series but the third movie is horrid! The Continuing Story is a total stinker!

This Is The Second Movie. It Is NOT The Third Movie!.......2005-10-17

A lot of reviewers gave bad reviews of this movie thinking it was the dreadful third movie The Continuing Story when it's really the delightful second movie, in Canada it's called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel while in the USA it's Anne of Avonlea and I believe when it was first shown on TV in the USA it was called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but for some reason they changed the title in the USA. I believe that the confusion of reviewers with Anne of Green Gables the Sequel and Anne Of Green Gables The Continuing Story was because Amazon by mistake or computer glitch had shown the cover for and description for The Continuing Story under the title Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but I see that Amazon has since discovered and fixed that mistake. Anyway Anne of Green Gables/Anne of Avonlea is a great movie and has Anne leaving home to go teach in another town where she is romanced by Morgan the wealthy and handsome father of one of her students, which will have you wondering if Kevin Sullivan changed the story and if she will wind up with Morgan instead of Gilbert, but if you haven't seen the movie yet don't worry because the question of who she chooses is answered at the end, and I'm sure it's very obvious who she will choose anyway! Though I thought Morgan or really the guy who played him was handsome in my mind Gilbert is the only man for her and I wish they had shown more of him in the movie! I recommend this movie in either one of it's titles!

A word of waring, it seems that most of older reviews for this movie have mistaken it for the third movie The Continuing Story which was a stinky pretentious artsy fartsy snorefest that totally strayed from the books and the other two movies! But this is actually the second movie and it is great, great, great! This movie used to be called Anne of Avonlea but is now called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel and this is when Anne goes off to teach at a school for young girls and is being courted by the rich older man and I totally highly recommend this movie.

I see some people honestly made the mistake that this is the third movie it is not, it is the second movie. Please dont mistake this for a bad movie. If you loved the first Anne movie you will love this second one just as much. Megan Follows is the perfect Anne and she captured the character in everyway. Although this movie does differ in some aspects from the book(s) it is just as wonderful. You will love how Anne goes to Queens College, becomes a teacher, and how Anne finally realised Gilbert is the one for her. The other characters of Gilbert, Marilla, Mathew, Rachel and Diana are equally as wonderful and as endearing as Anne! This is the perfect family movie. My daughter loves it and so does my husband. It is a classic!

I am surprised at how many reviews I have read which are confused about this plot. In "Anne of Avonlea", Anne is hired to be a teacher in an all girl school. Her bossom friend Diana is engaged and gets married to Fred. I love how each character had his/her own uniqueness. In this movie Gilbert proposes to Anne twice!(you'll see) I absolutely love this!
