Vivien Leigh is a "Scarlett" woman as tragic heroine Anna Karenina, unhappily married to "colossal bore" Alexei (Ralph Richardson), who neglects her to attend to affairs of state. When Anna meets the dashing Count Vronsky (Kieron Moore), she begins an affair of her own that scandalizes St. Petersburg and leads to her ostracization from high-society circles and, in a heartbreaking scene, her beloved son. Pepe Le Moko director Julien Duvivier's 1948 adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's oft-filmed book has stretches that make the film seem as long and cold as a Russian winter night, but the ravishing Leigh as the doomed Anna keeps the fires burning. The "thoughtless and selfish" Anna is a distant relation of the willfull Ms. O'Hara from Gone with the Wind, although her ultimate comeuppance leaves no hope for "another day." This is a high-minded prestige production (Tolstoy gets his name above the title), but it offers the more simple, old fashioned pleasures of a Hollywood melodrama. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Love the actress but not the best screenplay.......2007-06-12

This isn't Vivien's best movie but she is still breath-taking. I believe she is a good choice for the tragic character of Anna, but I do not like the choice for Vronksy. He and Vivien were not convincing as lovers (like Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean in the 1997 version). I must admit I think that version was suberb and I have a difficult time not comparing the two. I do recognize the limitations of a 1948 film (i.e., not filmed on location) But this is a welcome addition to my Vivien collection. The digitally remastered film is very clear.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Fox Video.......2007-05-13

First they told us Laura was cut on release by war-time censors,
then they told us In Old Chicago had a longer "roadshow" running
time. Now they only give us 111 minutes of Anna Karenina,
albeit in superior image quality. Thanks to reviewer Lees
I ordered the Austrlian DVD which, is complete and well worth
the effort. After all the bad press on Gang's All Here, you think
they would get some savvy consultants in on the job.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Leigh nudges out Garbo for best "Anna" honors........2007-02-18

First off, let us concede that neither the 1935 Greta Garbo "Anna Karenina" nor the 1948 Vivian Leigh version comes close to capturing the complexities of Tolstoy's masterpiece. Most significantly, Konstantin Levin and Kitty's relationship, and more particularly, Levin's protracted personal and metaphysical development, are dropped entirely, both screenplays preferring to treat the story as an adulterous romantic triangle with snowflakes instead of palm trees.

That said, what we are left with in both films are masterpieces of film craftsmanship, where the triple triumphs of cinematography, art direction, and costume design are the real stars.

Which is not in any way to lessen the contributions of the cast, who in both instances, make the best of what they have to work with.

Garbo enchants in many of her individual scenes, particularly with Freddy Bartholomew and Maureen O'Sullivan, (as Kitty). Who can forget her advising Kitty to seize her fleeting youth, with its promise of a dream prince to emerge from the blue haze of the mountain top. Equally impressive, is her muted aversion to Alexei Karenin, (Basil Rathbone).

But she fails in her depiction of a fatal love for Count Vronsky (Frederic March). Garbo, with her solemn, majestic and singular self possession--her "Queen Christina" like cerebral detachment, is simply too thoughtful, too deliberate, to in any way convey Tolstoy's impulsive, febrile and thoughtless anti-heroine.

True, she had forsaken all for John Gilbert in "Christina," but that decision was the result of deep and thorough soul searching, and explained with the eloquence of Solomon to her courtiers. In "Camille" she is by profession a lover, and so her ultimate renunciation of Armand, reveals the true depth of her character. But one cannot conceive of her destroying the lives of others to satisfy a whimsical infatuation.

And this is where Miss Leigh's Anna trumps Garbo, for Miss Leigh does successfully transmit Anna's neurasthenic and utterly reckless collapse at the feet of the dashing Count. She seems blown by forces much stronger than she--a daffodil in a windstorm, and light years from Garbo's deep Scandanavian imperturbability.

Given the alleged similarities between Miss Leigh and Anna's disposition, perhaps this is life imitating art. In any case, it is why she makes a truer Anna, and why the role serves as a warm up for Blanche Dubois...

She is also abetted in her interpretation, by the genuinely eerie, recurring, nightmare sequence--with the Charon like, white bearded old man, forever dogging her as he chinks away at the ice. An ill omen indeed ! And Miss Leigh conveys the desperation of her impending doom in every gesture and nuance.

Then too Keiron Moore, (despite being an inferior actor to Frederic March) is much more dashing and handsome as Vronsky--a fact which, at least in terms of audience sympathy, helps explain the attraction.

Strangely, Mr. March who had been so visually appealing as Dr. Jeckyll, just a few years earlier, photographs very poorly in the Garbo version, and is not helped by a buzz haircut.

And as superb as Cedric Gibbons sets and Adrian's costumes are as a backdrop for Garbo, we feel Mr.Andrejew's art direction and Cecil Beaton's designs get the nod here as well, if only perhaps in their European origin, and the deep, appropriately moody nineteenth century shadows with which they are lit and photographed.

However, as visually sumptuous cinematic recreations of a vanished aristocratic world--each version has much to savor, and should be taken in tandem.

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-01-09

First of all, I've read Anna Karenina and I love it. While I was in Iraq this past year, I saw in the PX a copy of Anna Karenina....WHAT?...In Iraq? So, not being one to buy movies, I hesitated before saying to myself, "If I don't buy it, who will"...I bought it, watched it, and loved it. I expected it to be bad, but the movie really charmed me over. Not as in depth as the later BBC miniseries, but this has a unique place all its own. Watch it....and keep me updated!

4 out of 5 stars VIVIEN LEIGH PORTRAYS ANNA KARENINA THE TRAGIC HEROINE........2006-11-12

Anna Karenina is set in dramatic Russia 1875, Leigh takes the lead as Anna, the film opens with Anna's bother Stefan Oblonsky (Hugh Dempster) discussing with a friend a martial spat that he had with his wife, she has threaten to leave him. He has asked his sister to intervene, Anna immediately takes the train from St Petersburg to Moscow in a bid to help her brother, her company during the train journey is Countess Vronsky (Helen Haye) who herself is on her way to meet her son. Arriving at the station Anna briefly makes the acquaintance of the Countess Son, Count Vronsky (The very young and dashing Kieron Moore) although the meeting was very brief Count Vronsky passion is sparked by Anna's beauty. While Anna is visiting Moscow the Count tries to pursue Anna, although Anna loves the attention and has a wonderful time she keeps her senses for she is already married with child to a very influential man in society.

Anna takes the train back to St Petersburg to meet her husband Alexei Karenina (Ralph Richardson) Alexei is a boring bureaucratic husband who pays little attention to his wife caught in a loveless marriage with nothing in common apart from their son, Anna's mind begins to wander. Count Vronsky had followed Anna back to St Petersburg's in pursuit refusing to give up, he has the knowledge that Anna is unhappy in marriage. Count Vronsky persistence finally pays off, Anna beings an affair at first discretely but soon Anna can bare no more and leaves her husband, in doing so she must pay the consequences of her decision, alienated by her husband and society she is forced to leave with her lover for Venice, Italy but while away Anna feel the Count is bored with his isolated life she now lives in desperate fear of believing her lover will lose interest and abandon her.

They return to Russia but Anna fears grow worst each day, while Count Vronsky can walk among society with out any problems, Anna must pay as punishment, she is caught up in double standards of society she must suffer isolation for cheating on her husband. Her loneliness and fears within, leads to a tragic end.

Directed by Julien Duviver and based on the book by Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina was released in 1948, Vivien Leigh who's captivating beauty and talent should have been perfect for this role, unfortunately compared to her other films Leigh did not put in one of her better performances but that wasn't to say it was a bad one either. The whole cast keep it together throughout with their strong acting skills and has this film ticking over. Worth even viewing for the elegant set decor and of course Cecil Beaton's lavish costume designs.

Who was Greta Garbo? For a while the greatest of all movie stars, then a celebrated recluse, always "the mysterious lady," Garbo purred, "I want to be alone," and people took her at her word. Of course, the real Garbo is actually the "reel" Garbo, the silvery, suffering creature on the movie screen--the way the light caught her eyes, and the way she slithered around in silk. There are other Garbo films to be seen, but Garbo: The Signature Collection is the essential Garbo, the alpha and omega for fans and beginners. This 10-disc package collects seven of her MGM sound pictures, three silents, and the Turner Classic Movies documentary Garbo, which gives a good career overview and warm testimony from friends and relatives (although more critical perspective on her talent would have been welcome). Some extras and commentaries are mixed in.

The Garbo Silents disc features Flesh and the Devil, one of her sizzling box-office duets with John Gilbert; The Temptress, a wild number with Garbo as a man-killer who follows Antonio Moreno to the plains of Argentina; and The Mysterious Lady, a tight spy picture with Garbo as a Russian agent seducing the susceptible Conrad Nagel. When Garbo finally talked it was headline news, and if Anna Christie has aged a bit, the star's sultry enunciation of "Gimme a visky" retains its historic punch. (The disc includes a German-language version of the film shot at the same time.)

Mata Hari continues the exotic storytelling of Garbo's silent years, as she does an eye-popping turn as the famous German spy. Grand Hotel casts her as a tired, tired ballet dancer, in a star-studded MGM project that played on her public image as aloof and mysterious. The movie was a box-office smash and took the Best Picture Oscar for 1932, and still stands as a glittery gem of the studio system. Under the sympathetic direction of Rouben Mamoulian in Queen Christina, Garbo flourishes in a tale of a Swedish royal who escapes the grind by disguising herself as a boy. She insisted that John Gilbert--his career in tatters and his life near its end--be her leading man. Garbo rarely seemed more spot-on, and the film's final grand adoration of her is justifiably famous.

Anna Karenina is Garbo's second crack at the Tolstoy heroine, after the silent Love. It's a throbbing performance, even if the movie itself is one of those MGM productions that seems to doze under all its finery and respectability. Camille is scrumptious costume tragedy, with Robert Taylor as co-star and George Cukor as director. Finally, Ernst Lubitsch's Ninotchka (you know--"Garbo Laughs") is a bubbly comedy of frosty Sovietism meeting the champagne pleasures of Paris. Garbo retired two years, ending her reign but keeping the enigma intact. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars at last.... here she is - in full splendour:-).......2007-02-18

I`ve grown up with Garbo... Ever since I was a child, Swedish television has indeed appreciated her legacy and I`ve witnessed all the sound films mentioned here:

To my mind, what makes Garbo great is her wonderful sphinx face... and her melancholy, sad remarks... When called upon hysterics and outburts, she is painfully amateurish...

That goes for ANNA CHRISTIE, GRAND HOTEL, CONQUEST, AS YOU DESIRE ME.... In CAMILLE, NINOTCHKA and TWO-FACED WOMAN she shows us the actress, a girl who DID posseess nuances... method acting....

And never more so that in the silent FLESH AND THE DEVIL 1926.
In it she is a man-eater, a sultress, a she-devil and she she in only limited when call upon a confrontation scene with Lars Hanson`s sister...

The film has wonderful closeups of its three stars and the subject remains as fresh as it did in 1926. The scenes in the snow and how she seduces John Gilbert is quite good and I must say - FLESH AND THE DEVIL is still quite watchable even today.

To me the friendship between Gilbert and Hanson is a homosexual one and when Garbo falls through the ice - the men are seen embracing each other - and free of that devil Felicitas.

Their intense friendship fools no one in 2007, but 80 years ago it must have...

Garbo is only 21 in the film, but shows a mature display of acting and womanhood - no wonder the world fell for her and the same goes for the sound MATA HARI...

5 out of 5 stars Garbo is the face!!! The face is the place!!!.......2007-01-27

Magnificent set with a lot of extras. The silent films have commentaries and this whole set is a great tribute to (THE FACE). Garbo is so magnetic on the screen. I was just so astounded by her beauty and her acting ability. I bought it because I saw The Temptress on TCM. After seeing it I had to see more. There is just something about Garbo that words cannot say. The TCM disc about her life was so good. It's hard to believe, however understandable, that she just walked away. What a loss to the screen. Barry Paris and Mark Veira have wonderful biographies available which explain her life story. I was just blown away like never before by the silents Temptress,Flesh and the Devil and Mysterious Lady. Camille is the story of Verdi's La Traviata. Anna Karenina is a period piece film of a Russian. Anna Christie is Garbo's first talkie. It takes 16 minutes before you hear the first ever line from her(Give me a Visky). Grand Hotel is loaded with stars such as the Barrymores and Joan Crawford in what may be her first movie. Mata Hari the spy and Ninotchka the Russian diplomat. You just can't get enough of Garbo and you will never get tired of watching her. Buy it before it goes out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Good work.......2006-12-23

Although I really never "got" Garbo, little too much of a hick with an accent for my taste, these came out well. If you are a fan you'll like them.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2006-11-10

There is no one that compares with Garbo on the screen today. She had a presence like no other. I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. Well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent rendition!.......2007-06-08

I could not have been more pleased with the accuracy of this mini-series as it links to the original literary work. The story is fluid, well-told, well-acted and the casting is spot-on. Even though the indoor shots are a bit soap-opera-ie (a new word?), the cinematography of the outdoor scenes really blew me away -- great film production work! If you're too lazy to read Anna Karenina, not to worry! Just watch this mini-series and you can speak on the original book with great authority. Be prepared for the extreme length of the DVDs but, for me, every moment was priceless. If I have a criticism, it is that the supposed Russians of this film all have British accents -- but one can't have everything. A rare insight into human nature and into 19th Century Russian Nobility and Serf culture as well. A wonderful mini-series.

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Way Up!!.......2007-04-23

I read the novel in my teens, and remembered it vaguely. This film was soap opera-ish, but wonderfully acted, had beautifully scenery and was completely faithful to the storyline. 10 hours sounds long, but it was well worth the time spent. You won't even notice the heavily British accents, as you follow the characters around "Russia".

Great film.

5 out of 5 stars Great Miniseries.......2007-04-02

It was very enjoyable and extremely well done. Much better than many other versions of Anna Karenina Hollywood films or some plays I saw on stage. A real classic to have in one's collection.

1 out of 5 stars Anna Karenina.......2007-01-11

Absolutely perfect! I have been looking for this version for some time and it was well worth the wait!

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-01-09

After reading Anna Karenina I wanted to check out some of the film adaptations, so I bought this. I personally liked it, the production does kind of feel like a soap opera in a way. But 10 episodes gives them time to develop the characters nicely. If you like the book, give it a go....and keep me updated!

Description

Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. This famous line commences a refreshingly modern interpretation of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina-—an epic tale of love, duty, marriage and infidelity. This richly detailed film charts the tragic romantic triangle formed when the dashing Count Vronsky defies social conventions and falls into forbidden love with Anna, the ignored wife of an aristocrat. Soon, Anna's children—a son by Alexei and illegitimate daughter by Vronsky—become pawns in Alexei's game to see that Anna pays a terrible price for her indiscretion. With its gripping narrative and unbridled romance, Anna Karenina reveals the uncontrollable passion, emotional betrayal and courage of a woman who violates moral strictures and risks everything to follow her heart. Helen McCrory stars as Anna, along with Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting) as Count Vronsky, the handsome object of her desires; and Tony Award-winner Stephen Dillane (The Real Thing) as Alexei Karenin, Anna's callously principled husband.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece Theater has done it again.......2006-08-01

This is an excellent adaptation of Anna Karenina. Brilliantly casted, with Helen McCrory as Anna and Kevin McKidd as Vronsky. McKidd has a sort of Russian look about him, though I can't exactly describe it. McCrory's animated deep-set eyes look more and more tired and hopeless by the end of the movie. A near perfect Anna in all her moods and actions. And her laugh is the kind that sticks in your head afterwards, and sometimes you miss hearing it.

It must be hard to condense such a mammoth novel, but this adaptation succeeded in bringing together most of the central points of the book (much more so than the wretched version with Sean Bean and some french actress, which was far too short and left out critical scenes).

Every time I hear Chopin's "Waltz in C# Minor," I think of the ball scene in which Anna is ostracized and Vronsky accepted. Sadly, this double standard is still in place today.

5 out of 5 stars a beautifull film about love.......2006-07-20

this is probably the best adaption of anna karenina i have seen unlike most adaptions this version shows levin alot more than previous adaptions and has a darker fell to it. even though the two leads lack chemistery it does not affect the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Rapturous Anna.......2006-01-27

Helen McCrory literally embodied the role of the ill-fated Anna Karenina in this production. Her journey from the pinnacle of High Russian society to the depths of despair as an outcast was captured by Ms. McCrory exceptionally well.

Stephen Dillane and Kevin McKidd also expertly deliver, playing Alexei Karenin and Alexei, the Count Vronsky, respectively. Dillane's portrayal of the icy, unfeeling Karenin was superb; even more so was McKidd's steamy, passionate reading of the enamoured Vronsky.

I was also well pleased with the performances of dear old, always-in-period-pieces Amanda Root, and familiar faces with Paul Rhys and Paloma Baeza, all delivering excellent performances.

However, the role of Levin (Kitty's eventual husband), played by Douglas Henshall, worked my last Tolstoy-loving nerve. Actually, I was relatively unimpressed with the fact that the entire cast, while portraying Russian nobility and speaking about journeying to St. Petersburg and Moscow, spoke with upper-crust British accents. I believe well-developed Russian, or at least SOME version of Eastern-European, accents for the cast would have heightened the atmosphere of the Russian background in which the story is set. Mr. Henshall's ridiculously thick Scottish brogue -- dripping moss-covered syllables as he mumbles on about rubles and vodka and the czar (?!?!) -- simply defied both logic and validity.

I think his role could have been much better cast.

Overwhelmingly, however, "Anna" remained very true to the novel, and I think, despite his undoubted confusion over the accents of the actors, Mr. Tolstoy himself would consider this adaptation a credit to the world were he able to view it for himself.

5 out of 5 stars Anna Karenina--gripping--love it.......2005-10-16

This version of Anna Karenina is so good. It's true to the book without all of Karenin's business dealings (which were rather dull in the book). Love the story, so compelling, so tragic and so passionate...ah...Excellent movie, amazing story.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic! unlike other reviews.........2004-10-24

This miniseries is FANTASTIC! And I am SO happy it is finally getting it's DVD release here in the U.S.! The story centers around Anna and her shameful affair with Count Vronsky. This miniseries actually tells the full novel in depth, other than the 1997 theatricle release starring Sean Bean. Also, the Anna in this version is much more beautiful than in the theatricle release. So, buy it, and you will not be dissappointed!

Garbo won two consecutive New York Film Critics Awards for best actress in this and Camille--an altogether more satisfying selection. At 95 minutes, this handsome David O. Selznick production for MGM hasn't a prayer of doing justice to the rich supporting cast of characters in Tolstoy's thick novel (notably Kitty, through no fault of the perky Maureen O'Sullivan). That was equally true of Clarence Brown's 1927 silent version Love (1927), also starring Garbo, but it was both more passionate and more fluid; Brown's direction here gathers no momentum within scenes or in the film overall. Garbo's quiet "Too late, too late," as she realizes early on what a tragedy her obsessive love affair must lead to, is exquisitely doomed; but Fredric March makes a tiresome, even petulant, Vronsky. It's a measure of the film's misdirection that Basil Rathbone, icy-cold as the careerist husband Karenin, inspires more sympathy. At least he's entertaining. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Anna Karenina, dutiful wife and doting mother, knows contentment but not passion. That changes when she meets ardent Count Vronsky. For him, she throws away marriage, family, social position and finally her life. Leo Tolstoy's novel receives sumptuous treatment in David O. Selznick's production. The cast - including Fredric March (as Vronsky), Basil Rathbone, Maureen O'Sullivan and Freddie Bartholomew - is stellar under the direction of Clarence Brown. But the soul of the film is Greta Garbo in a nuanced performance that won the New York Film Critics Best Actress Award. At the height of her art, Garbo is unforgettable as a woman helpless in love's thrall and heartbroken at the loss of her son. Her final scene will haunt you.

3 out of 5 stars Overated missed opportunity.......2007-06-29

In the Garbo canon, this film surely must rate as the biggest missed opportunity of her career. All the ingredients should have contributed to a memorable film but after a good start, it just doesn't happen.

Maybe it is the short running time. A sweeping novel has been understandably truncated but Anna's relationship with Vronsky is not sufficiently developed so their passion is unconvincing. A number of scenes don't lead anywhere e.g. Kitty's marriage scene.

Maybe it's the cast. Basil Rathbone as her husband rises to Garbo's level, superbly generating some sympathy within a stern and cold character and Reginald Owen is excellent as her brother. Freddie Bartholomew is awful with his acting school diction and delivery. Fredric March starts well, dashing and magnetic, but becomes mechanical and unconvincing as the film develops. Maureen O'Sullivan, no one's idea of a Russian or Garbo's sister, overacts in a simpering and cloying manner.

Maybe it's the script and direction. The first 20 minutes are by far the best with a terrific scene when March and his colleagues drink and eat and as the film moves to the memorable introduction of Garbo through the steam of a train and shows her empathy and warmth as she deals with her errant brother. From there, it is a gradual downhill slide plodding along lugubriously and generating little passion. It is as if everyone ran out of interest, even Garbo.

Maybe it was the censorship which caused so many of these problems. Anna Karenina is an adulteress so it is likely that any scenes of real passion would have been curtailed.

The print of the film has not been restored and is dirty with white lines appearing often. At least one scene is missing as noted by another reviewer and there are no extras except the original trailer. Unless the film is purchased as part of one of the Garbo collections, it is not good value.

2 out of 5 stars a classics illustrated comic book would give you a better impression of tolstoy.......2007-03-21

garbo is radiant but there is no other reason to watch this highly abridged telling of tolstoys novel. while im used to hollywood (by necessityt) removing whole sections of a loooong book, this is incomprehensible to anyone who hasnt some previous acquaintance with the story. even the usually reliable fredric march and basil rathbone (one of the greatest hams ever) cant save it.

3 out of 5 stars Love in an Age of Appearances.......2007-03-04

As I plow my way through this Great Garbo Signature Collection a few things are becoming somewhat apparent. One, as Garbo got older she grew into her beauty and out of that ghostly look she had in his early films. And two, she is a movie star not a serious actress. As a result this adaptation of "Anna Karenina" is much more a Garbo vehicle than a serious take on a serious piece of Russian literature. Like most of her film entrances this one is marked by an extreme close up, lighting that is way too bright, and actual fanfare that today would just seem silly. The main problem I had was that it was just not very literary. The vocab is at a second grade reading level and the ideas are bold and unambiguous. The book and even the movie are old old old so I will forgive the story for feeling familiar, and you have to appreciate the message they are trying to spread. Here we have Anna, who fought for love, but was crushed under an avalanche of honor and careers, and who died for the sins of the men in her life.

The first 30 minutes of the film are a waste (sorry, sacrifice) as we visit an upscale party where Anna meets Count Vronsky (Fredric March). We get so much dancing and costuming that I started having flashbacks to "Marie Antoinette". From there the film turns its attention to the role of adultery and the repressive nature of marriage. Anna and Vronsky are besotted, but Anna is married to Karenin, a tough military type who marches around all day scolding her for spoiling their (obnoxious) son. He doesn't really care if she loves him or not, just so long as she stays with him so that they can keep up appearances. She eventually caves to passion and he resorts to the old "Your mother is dead," trick to explain her absence to their son. The film takes a stand against all things that are rotten about our dealings with relationships. Marriage is presented as an evil force that is thrust upon us to quash free love, free sex, and freedom. The rules are blasted for being arbitrary and the fact that sometimes there is a better option out there than marriage is stated. Those who sit around all day imploring others to focus on their careers are dismissed as stuffy bougie folk with nothing better to do. Of course there is a lot of Hollywood hokum mixed in here, what with the rousing tale of how you should crawl out from under your oppressors boot and find true happiness, but still this movie rocks philosophically.

Soon after running off together Anna and Vronsky realize that there is a difference between love making and love maintaining. Her son beckons her and the Serbian/Turkish War beckons him. These desires dominate their lives until the film moves towards a decent climax and the anti-climatic resolution. I would also like to say that in light of the Barbaro tragedy the horse racing scene is especially tough to watch. Not so much for the image of a horse being euthanized, but for those that involved real horses taking truly scary tumbles. This film may depict old school Russia but the message is still relevant. We are all too eager to slap on the shackles of jobs and relationships just so that we can bemoan the ball and chain. And the sooner we realize that our government is squarely on the side of Karenin, the better off we will be. **3/4

3 out of 5 stars Garbo fails to convince here........2007-02-18

3 out of 5 stars The Story of a Russian Love Triangle.......2006-06-27

+++++

This movie is based on the very long 1877 Russian novel "Anna Karenina" by Count Leo Tolstoy (1828 to 1910).

The thick novel is really two novels: a powerful drama of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage seeking love and happiness and Tolstoy's spiritual confessions of his lifelong meditations on birth, death, and God.

This movie focuses out of necessity for time constraints on the first aspect mentioned above.

Thus this movie is about Anna Karenina (Greta Garbo), a woman who has beauty, social position, wealth, a husband (Basil Rathbone), and a son (Freddie Bartholomew) who adores her but her existence seems empty. When she meets the dashing officer Count Vronsky (Fredric March), she rejects her marriage and turns to him to fulfill her passionate nature.

Greta Garbo along with Fredric March carry the movie and they both give fine performances. Even Freddie Bartholomew (who was then a child star) does a good job. In my opinion though, Basil Rathbone gives a very convincing performance as the husband who is concerned with his career and social position above everything else.

The Russian music that occasionally plays is fantastic. The costumes are a sight to behold. All scenery and cinematography are breathtaking.

Unfortunately, the movie seems rushed and doesn't do justice to the rich supporting cast of Tolstoy's novel. There is a sub-plot with two other characters that seems to go nowhere. The forming of the relationship (that's central to the movie) between Garbo and March seems somewhat unbelievable since not enough time is given for it to develop. Worse still, as the movie proceeds it doesn't seem to gain momentum and becomes more-or-less predictable (even though I did not see the last scene coming).

Finally, the DVD itself (the one released in Sept. 2005) has good sound quality. The picture quality is also surprisingly good (especially when you consider that this movie was made so long ago) but there are faint streaks or lines that occasionally occur in the last scene. There is one extra: a theatrical trailer.

In conclusion, I think Greta Garbo fans will appreciate this movie despite its problems much more than non-Garbo fans.

5 out of 5 stars "I seem to be falling down the abyss.".......2006-12-16

This Soviet version of "Anna Karenina" is the best film adaptation of Tolstoy's novel to date. Directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi, "Anna Karenina" is a masterpiece of Russian realism, wonderfully cast, and beautifully acted, and the result, is a film that's true to the spirit of Tolstoy's novel.

Anna Karenina (Tatyana Samojlova) is married to a much older, stodgy politician, Karenin (Nikolai Gritsenko). Together, they have one son. Anna travels from St. Petersburg, and upon arrival in Moscow, she meets Vronsky (Vasili Lanovoy), the son of her traveling companion. Although, Anna and Vronsky only catch a glimpse of one another, the chemistry is immediate. They meet in Moscow and begin a passionate affair.

The film handles the subject of adultery and sexuality quite marvelously. There are clearly different standards for men and women, and when the film begins, Anna's brother, Stiva (Yuri Yakovlev) is in domestic hot water with his wife Dolly (Iya Savvina) for his disruptive affair with his children's governess. With his wife threatening to leave, Stiva begs Anna to intervene, and she does so successfully. Stiva's main lesson from the affair is to take his peccadilloes outside of the home--and Dolly turns a blind eye while imagining that he's 'learned his lesson.' Vronksy has an affair with Anna, but is still able to move about quite smoothly in society--although Anna very quickly becomes a social pariah. One of Anna's sophisticated acquaintances attempts to shield Anna and steer her towards more socially acceptable behaviour on several occasions. According to Russian society, the key to adultery is discretion, and Anna, to her credit and to her destruction, is not capable of deception.

The plight of the peasants is subtly woven into the film's background--whether it's a peasant severed in half by a train, or peasants wandering the countryside as they beg for work, the film hints at the plight of the lower classes set against the affairs, balls and soirees of their wealthy 'masters'.

The film contains some fantastic scenes--at a ball, the camera whirls along with the dancers while the racetrack scenes illustrate Vronsky's inherent character weakness. The scene when Karenin collects Anna from the railway station conveys the suffocating nausea of the Karenins' marriage. Consummate politician Karenin can't open his mouth without making a speech to some imagined audience. And when Anna confesses her affair to her husband, there's the sound of what seems to be knives sharpening in the background. This ominous sound is the perfect backdrop to her confession. The noise, however, is the sound of scythes during harvest, and this becomes apparent in the next farming scene, but the addition of the sounds overlapping from one scene to another is a stroke of brilliance on the part of the director.

As for the DVD quality...the Kino release is a 2 disc set. The main problem regarding quality is that colours are washed out. In one scene that takes place at the ball, Kitty's hair appears to be silver, but a few minutes later, it's dark brown. Some of the extra features (including subtitles) are a little difficult to negotiate at first. That said, there are some really excellent extra features here: "Thoughts about Leo Tolstoy" (21 minutes), "Chronikle"--11 minutes of footage of Tolstoy, "The Making of Anna Karenina" (3 minutes), video interviews, Leo Tolstoy Biography & Photo Album, cast & crew biographies/ filmographies. The viewer has the choice of Russian, English dubbed, French dubbed, with optional English French and Spanish subtitles--displacedhuman

3 out of 5 stars Good movie, but film quality somewhat poor.......2004-03-08

This movie by far keeps the essence of the classic Russian masterpiece. The English versions were awful, and I was very delighted to have the pleasure of viewing this Russian production. The quality of the film is lacking, but nothing terrible. This movie sticks closely to the story except for the absence of "Levin's story". His relationship with Kitty is there, but briefly. No detailed perspective on the importance of his charcter, and no mention of his brother. Also, there was no revelation for Kitty's transformed outlook on life after her sickness and before marrying Levin.

The main storyline with Anna, husband Karenin, and Vronsky was well done. I enjoyed it.

Overall, it was good. I'm glad to have it on my shelf in my colection of Russian movies.

3 out of 5 stars Needs more work.......2003-06-06

If the flickering of the film doesn't give you a headache, then maybe the fact that the English Audio track has roughly 15 - 20 minutes of russian with subtitles that just come and go. The color is all washed out, though the picture is sharp??? Why did they only go halfway with this? Then there's the two disk thing, this film is only 2hrs 20mins long, it would easily have fit on one disk.

The film itself is okay, a bit short for such a long novel (why can't they just give this a 3hr treatment?) There is still alot missing from this adaptation though it is the most exhaustive I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars An example of excellent book adaptation.......2003-03-16

The picture of this DVD may not be the perfect one (which is a pity) but it is definitely worth watching. This is one on those rare films which prove that a long and complicated book can be filmed. Everything... from actors, who gave some outstanding performances, to sets, is almost exactly as I imagined it while reading the novel. It is not just a romantic story as it is shown in the other film versions, but a very serious, tragic social drama. This film is by far the best adaptation of the great novel.

1 out of 5 stars Sad DVD of interesting film!.......2003-02-22

What a pity! I've been waiting for almost 35 years to see this film. And when I finally do, it feels like taking a cold shower without warning! Produced by the Russian Cinema Counsil, and distributed by Ruscico/Image, this DVD is a visual mess. Originally filmed in 70mm, this ought to look absolutely splendid; instead, the print (or negative?) used for transfer displays dreadfully washed out colors, lousy contrasts, and looks so soft that it almost made my eyes hurt. Was this really the best source material that could be found in the vaults? I do not think so! Old Soviet archives were famous for taking good care of their cultural heritage (provided, of course, that the artists involved did not do something politically or morally "incorrect"), and this film appealed to the powers in the Kremlin as splendid export material. So what went wrong? Better leave this kind of job to the people at Criterion in the future!

Sophie Marceau plays the title character in this 1997 version of Tolstoy's classic, set in Imperial Russia. Bernard Rose (Paperhouse) directs, but his accent is on sumptuousness instead of performance, and the result is that much of what happens--especially Anna's affair with Vronsky (Sean Bean)--is opaque and unbelievable. (Bean in particular is badly suited to his part.) A redeeming feature is Alfred Molina's role as the narrator, but he alone can't prop up Rose's façade of grand passion. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Interesting to read all these reviews.......2007-01-23

I just watched this movie on video, and was curious what others thought, so I checked out the reviews. What really stands out to me is how much each individual brings of him or herself to an experience.

You can review several things about the film--how true it was to the book, or, conversely, how entertaining it was on its own; how well-cast you thought the main characters were, and whether or not they had sexual chemistry; and what you thought of the production values and directorial choices such as having the main characters speak Russian to the servants and peasants. So, acknowledging that what appeals to me might be anathema to someone else, here's what I thought.

I think Sophie Marceau is quite beautiful, and I would have believed that she couldn't resist her attraction to Vronsky, but the script (or editing) jumped so quickly to the affaire that I couldn't quite do it. I was almost convinced, though, because I would have found Sean Bean impossible to resist. He conveyed perfectly a rather superficial aristocrat, whose first taste of depth and intensity was his response to this beautiful woman, and who couldn't/wouldn't think beyond satisfying his need to experience that feeling. He didn't seem too old or too cold to me--I thought his eyes expressed quite a bit of heat and passion, even if the script (or again, editing) kept him from expressing them verbally.

The issue of accents is also interesting--I guess, as an American, I can readily accept British and French accents performing a nineteenth century Russian story, but the American ones seem jarring to me--my disbelief is abruptly not suspended any more--it comes roaring back, saying, "That's an actor, and not a very convincing one, at that."

The costumes may not have been authentic, I didn't care, I just enjoyed looking at them. The sets, likewise. The story was poorly abridged, but I knew before I watched it that it would be, just from the length factor. The script lacked continuity, but I still found it moderately entertaining on its own terms. So, would I recommend this movie? Yes, but with reservations.

1 out of 5 stars what a failure!.......2006-08-02

This film is an awful collection of stereotypes, starting from the wolves on the snow as the opening scene following high society ladies drinking shots of vodka, etc etc.
I found it ridiculous that all society people are talking English and all the simple folk - Russian. How awful!! Obviously, the director wanted to draw a line between the classes, but to do it so awkwardly... Yes, Russian high classes were used to mix their Russian speach with French, but there has never been such a total language barrier as the director tries to convince us.
I was also surprised to see some good actors giving such totally wooden performances!
I doubt the film gets any better towards the end, though I will never know that for I couldn't bring myself to watch it for long (even out of curiosity) as it pained me greatly to see one of the finest works of literature spoiled so heartlessly.

4 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Production.......2005-02-21

It's been a long time since I read the book and I think this film takes some liberties with it, but I don't care. I enjoyed it purely as a "doomed love" story. I liked this better than any other version of Anna Karenina that I have seen, primarly because of the beautiful cinematography, the glorious music, the extravagantly beautiful interiors and the presence of Sean Bean, who has to be the sexiest Vronsky of all time. Sophie Marceau was not a bad Anna and at least, unlike some versions I have seen, it wasn't hard to see why she would inspire Vronsky's obsession. And the ballroom scene was one of the most beautiful and sweepingly romantic I have ever seen. There was a little too much of the Kitty/Levin relationship and Levin's voiceover ramblings were at points pretty boring but the movie overall is really a jewel in every way--very romantic, two beautiful protagonists, exotic settings and a score second to none.

3 out of 5 stars It's not the book,but it's one sumptuous movie!!!.......2004-11-17

Tolstoy cannot be distilled into less than two hours, but the music of Tchaikowsky,Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff coupled with lavish costumes and on location shots in St.Petersburg made this an immense viewing pleasure. The production was very much on the scale of AMADEUS.Director/Screenplay writer took much liberty with Tolstoy's ponderous novel and made a lush presentation showcasing the sounds and scenes of Czarist Russia. The camera work and lighting are first rate. These are some of the films numerous strengths in contrast to the condensed version of the book! This film has much to offer to those who have not read the book. The high points are hit.It should leave viewers the desire to know more of Tolstoy's writings and of Russian history.Again, the Georg Solti conducted soundtrack is worth a watching alone!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not like the book.......2004-05-04

This film has lavish production values. However, it is simply too short to convey the nuances of the novel, and the plot has been altered enough to disturb the novel's devotees. Probably this is why I was unable to become deeply involved with the characters. I was also disturbed by the actress cast for Kitty, a character who in the novel stands for conventional female purity. In the film Kitty has husky, sensual speech and usually appears with a push-up bra that spills her out of a low neckline. The actor who portrays Count Vronsky is so wooden you can't understand why Anna would ruin her life for him. And, I can't understand the apparently random alternation of English speech with Russian plus subtitles. Watch this film for the costumes and sets, not the story.

Screenplay by Anhouilh, and Ralph Richardson as Karenin. I saw this one before i saw the Garbo Karenina. Garbo was NOT well served by her screenwriters.

The look on Leigh's face in the final scene when she realizes she has recognized her lover...mistakenly...is heartbreaking.

5 out of 5 stars A Never Begin love story.......2006-05-02

If you love gorgeous antique costumes and jewelleries,I'm sure you'd fall in love with this remake movie of Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece.
Thanks to Bernard Rose who revealed the scenery, atmosphere colours and layouts... perfectly real.
Anna Karenina(Sophie Marceau) is a young passionate bourgeois lady married to an old fashion man while Russia was under the rule of Romanov.
The undelightful tittle-tattle among the courteseans
had conducted Anna to a tragic ending.

It is splendid at the ballroom, amazing atmosphere, the gentlement(knights)were able to dance, holding their ladies with only one arm, this is glamorous!!
while the piece of 'Swan Lake' is in the air,Anna's heart was blasted by the glimpse of a young cavalliere...Count Vronsky.

The movie has a fantastic cinematography, you'll delightly feel as though you're among them.It would bring you back to the 18th century where each gesture of a character is a
'book of etiquette'.And above all,to me Sophie Marceau is a cute French origin.
