Description

The Great Artists chronicles the lives, times and works of the men whose genius has captivated the art world for generations. Informative and entertaining, the series highlights important events in each artist's life, explores their stylistic trademarks, and provides detailed explanations of their techniques.

The Great Artists also features expert commentary and analysis from leading authorities, art historians and scholars, new location footage and extensive period re-creations. The six programs in this series feature an in-depth look at the Dutch Masters.

Some art lovers believe that Rembrandt's abilities as a portraitist have never been surpassed, and it is, perhaps, his famous series of self-portraits that best demonstrate his genius. Painted over the course of his life, they reveal nothing less than Rembrandt himself, as he was when he was alive.

There is often a sadness in these images, perhaps unsurprisingly as Rembrandt suffered many difficulties during his life, including: bankruptcy, torrid affairs, and the death of loved ones. His paintings characteristically depict group portraits, landscapes, and religious work. Many of these images were produced as etchings, confirming Rembrandt's mastery of the line drawing as well as conveying the drama of great Biblical events. When he died in 1669, he left behind an incredible body of work whose qualities have been matched by few other artists of history, if at all.

Born in 1632, only three dozen canvases survive from Vermeer's working life. A resident of the Dutch city of Delft, it is Vermeer's subject matter that is the first point of interest in his work. Unusually, he chose to depict scenes of ordinary, everyday life. His images are calm and precise, almost mathematical in their organization, while his ability to depict the effects of light are also remarkable, though for a long time his skills were almost completely unknown. It would be two hundred years after Vermeer's death before his status as a Dutch Master began to be fully recognized.

Born in Antwerp in 1577, the young Peter Paul Rubens traveled extensively in Italy, soaking up the artistic achievements of the High Renaissance, and slowly becoming one of the most important Flemish painter of the 17th century. Returning to Flanders, he began a career that combined Renaissance technique with a new boldness of approach towards color and brushwork. His mastery at depicting surface texture can be seen in his religious images commissioned by the Catholic Church. But Rubens was undoubtedly a man of the world, a charming individual who worked as a diplomat and whose connections resulted in a great number of portrait commissions. It is these portraits that are, perhaps, the most enduring achievements of a giant of art history.

The pupil of Rubens, Anthony van Dyck followed his master's example by traveling to Italy as part of his artistic training. Like Rubens, he found inspiration in the Venetian Renaissance masters Titian and Giorgione. An enthusiasm for rich colors and a remarkable ability to depict the texture of fabric characterized Van Dyck's best work. But even more than Rubens, Van Dyck focused his attention on the art of the portraiture. Appointed Court Painter to the English King Charles in 1632, the portraits he produced provide an unrivaled visual insight into the noble men and women of the day, as well as displaying his technical mastery of the genre.

The career of Hieronymus Bosch is among the most mysterious of all the great artists of history. Though he was well-known by the time of his death in 1516, virtually nothing of his life is known today. His surviving works are also deeply enigmatic, highly symbolic images filled with the spirit of the Middle Ages. But the appeal of Bosch's work has long outlasted the late medieval age in which he lived. Though his art addressed the human follies of his own time, the satirical humor that he used can still be readily appreciated today. His intensely spiritual images of Christ and the Saints also continue to inspire many modern students, but it is Bosch's remarkable visions of the fantastic that are, undoubtedly, his greatest achievement.

The life of Pieter Bruegel the Elder will always remain something of a mystery. We possess few details of his sixteenth century life, and we must rely fully on his surviving art to appreciate his genius. As an artist, he was inspired deeply by his great Dutch predecessor, Hieronymous Bosch. His work reveals typically Boschian themes such as the Follies Of Man, and he used a similar keen humor to convey his artistic message. Bruegel also followed Bosch in his choice of contemporary subject matter. His depictions of peasant life are amongst the greatest in western art. He was also one of the first masters of landscape painting, and his satirical drawings are as relevant today as they have ever been, while religious works combine simplicity and depth in their spiritual message.

5 out of 5 stars Low Countries Immortal Painters .......2007-03-20

The Dutch Masters, a six-DVD set, introduce viewers to one of the most important schools in the history of visual arts: The Flemish/Dutch School of Painting of the 16th and 17th centuries. Art scholars chronicle the life, historical context, and the most celebrated works of six major artists of this school, namely:

1) Hieronymus Van Aken, known as Hieronymus Bosch after his birthplace`s Hertogenbosch
2) Pieter Breughel the Elder
3) Pieter Paul Rubens
4) Antoon van Dijck
5) Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, and
6) Johannes Vermeer.

To their credit, art scholars clearly explain the different techniques that these artists used for their religious scenes, portraits, land- and seascapes, still lifes, and other genres. The on-location photography mainly in both Belgium and the Netherlands give viewers a better understanding of the surroundings that were familiar to these artists. The Dutch Masters cannot be a substitute for physically seeing these works.

4 out of 5 stars The Paintings, not the Cigars.......2006-08-04

These were compact 50 minute lectures packed with information and art for the beginning or middle level student. It was a GREAT selection, where oddly the alphabetical order followed the chronological order. They were economically produced and thus offered at economical price. Probably not the best you could ever find, but nice, if you want to have a review or introduction. We feel very pleased with our set.
Also makes somewhat nice "wallpaper" to run on your television.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Artistic Bio.......2006-11-10

A very well acted, classic biography of Rembrandt. Charles Laughton is Rembrant. Not a standard 30's bio film. Unfortunately in black and white and the print was worn.

4 out of 5 stars My boy Charlie!.......2006-01-25

This is a man that could act his kiester off, Charles Laughton. He, and his wife, Elsa Lanchester, were a much more accessable version of people like Lunt and Fontaine, for Laughton's talents were obvious in every role he ever had. Don't believe me? Rent this and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", or the lighthearted "Canterville Ghost". He had a "mischievious little boy" way about him when he acted; a way of cocking his head and hedging that made you remember him as a grown-up version of little Johnny asking for more pennies to get candy. In this movie, about the legendary, edge-of-the-Renaissance painter, Rembrandt Van Rijn, his wife, Elsa, also shines as his latter-day love interest: very gentle, optimistic and almost perky. Most players in this film are good, though I feel Gertrude Lawrence overdoes it a bit, and in typical 30s Hollywood style. It's an MGM production, so I suppose overacting had to be in there SOMEWHERE, but her reading gets tiresome after awhile.

The script is full of bon mots, such as Van Rijn's short discourse of "knowing all women when you know just one..." speech, and his dressing down of the Amsterdam hoi-polloi when his masterpiece, "The Night Watch" is vainly slammed and picked apart on its first showing, but it is also good at pathos, as his beloved first wife dies and he also loses his later love, played by Lanchester.

I wish I could laud the condition of the transfer as highly, but alas, this has to be THE worst transfered DVD I have...! The highlights are WAY too bright, there are scratches and hair ghosts all through the thing, and we are cheated out of a first rate, saltine crisp print of one of Hollywood's best classic biographical films, and except for a longish movie-house trailer, there are ZERO extras in this thing. Shameful! Anyway, if you must get a copy of this film, find someone OTHER than MGM, for this transfer, plus the lack of extras, makes it less than an ideal buy! By all means, if you can find a better print transfer....BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth renting!.......2004-09-17

The DVD comes with the movie and trailer and that's it. Heck, you can't even put on English subtitles, which I like to do with old films in case I can't quite make out what they're saying. Also the transfer to DVD is not all that meticulous ... there's a couple of scene changes that are so abrupt that it feels like something's been cut out.

I don't know anything about the real Rembrandt's life, so I don't know how much of this movie is true, other than the fact that he was a painter. So, 1 star right away for piquing my curiosity and spurring me on to find out more about the real Rembrandt!

Charles Laughton, as always, is great. Early on in the movie he gave a truly moving speech about love (this was shortly before his first wife dies), about how loving her was the equivalent of loving every woman on earth. I can't do the speech justice (short term memory problems), but I do remember it was moving and I will have to search the internet to see if I can find a transcript of that speech! Charles is great throughout the whole movie.

The sparkling highlight comes about 50 minutes into the movie when Elsa Lanchester first appears. My God, this woman was so charismatic! I wish she had made more films and had bigger roles in movies. Elsa is only in the movie for about 25 minutes, and after her character departs I wanted to turn the movie off. If anyone but Charles Laughton was in the lead, I definitely would've stopped watching at that point.

OK, so this will probably get more no votes than yes votes in the "was this review helpful?" category! Sorry!

Bottom-lining it: Good movie, good story, great acting, Charles Laughton excellent, Elsa Lanchester sparkling and captivating! Crappy transfer to DVD. Worth the price of a rental, not sure (at least for me) that it's worth the price of purchasing.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent movie but ..........2004-07-12

As some reviewer have stated it has paid "careful attention payed to historical fact" I beg to differ. While the movie is highly entertaining and well acted please keep in mind it is a movie. Some facts are to be found but much license has been taken with the facts for story sake. For one Hendrickje Stoffels, engaged as his housekeeper about 1649 some 7 years after the death of his wife. I.E. they never met and there for Rembrandt could not have been tried for adultry, another error. Those are only two, but as I said IT'S A MOVIE not a history lesson. The DVD shows the age of the movie, some effort has been made to improve inage quality and sound but there still are a few hard cuts and signs of it's age. Well worth watching if you like art or you're just an old movie junkie. I would give it 5 stars but I'm taking one due to the historical errors and no extras on the DVD other than trailers.

5 out of 5 stars "I live in a beautiful, blinding, swirling mist".......2004-06-17

Charles Laughton's portrayal of the great Rembrandt is itself a masterpiece, full of sensitivity, pathos, whimsy, a lustful eye for the women who caught his fancy, and the eccentricities of a genius who lived way beyond his means and owed more than he owned to his creditors.
Rembrandt loved much, and suffered many personal losses, but his paintings became more luminous and full of emotional depth as the years went by. Laughton is also made to look much like the master, with his wispy mustache, and the resemblance to the famous self-portraits of the last ten years of his life is remarkable.

The film begins when Rembrandt is 36, in 1642, with the passing of his beloved wife Saskia, the model for so many of his works, and is followed by the controversy over his magnificent and enormous "The Night Watch", which was unveiled the same year. I never imagined this picture to be so huge and powerful.
The details of seventeenth century Amsterdam are marvelous, and I especially enjoyed seeing how the studio of the time was set up, with pigments in bottles, and canvas tied to a stretcher frame.

The film belongs to Laughton, and his magnificent performance, but the supporting cast is great, with Elsa Lanchester as Hendrickje, Gertrude Lawrence as his housekeeper and common law wife, and John Bryning as Titus, the only one of his four children with Saskia that survived.
Remarkably clear for its age, with very few crackles in its lovely cinematography by Geoffrey Toye, its years are more noticeable in the soundtrack (by Georges Perinal) than visually. Meticulously directed by Alexander Korda, this film should be seen by all art aficionados, and those who love Rembrandt's work, as you will love it even more after seeing this film. Total running time is 85 minutes.

    Description

Rembrandt's Masterly Brushstrokes: Rembrandt wanted the surface of his paintings to sparkle, and he achieved his desired result by developing paints of a highly specialized formula. His paints contained secret ingredients known only to the artist, and have eluded discovery until now.

Rembrandt and His World: Rembrandt's home for many years of his life was in Amsterdam where he and his wife kept a huge number of paintings to satisfy his mania for collection, and to provide inspiration for his own work. This program presents the restoration of his house and contains insights into Rembrandt's personality.

Rembrandt: Painter of Man is a fascinating documentary showing Rembrandt's unique capacity to capture and depict the many aspects of humanity. Dozens of his most famous paintings, as well as his self-portraits, are featured.

There are 40 years between the first and the last self-portraits of Rembrandt van Rijn. The first shows the coming young artist: proud and self-assured. The last one shows the old painter, marked by his misfortune and worries. In his paintings man was central, and these and his self-portraits are a mirror of his life, which is shown in a series of dissolves from one self-portrait to the other. A Film By Bert Haanstra.

: The Restoration of "The Night Watch" is an in-depth look at the restoration work performed on Rembrandt's masterpiece "The Night Watch," which was seriously vandalized in 1975. The eight-month job of restoration began: a new canvas was fixed in place, old varnish was removed, previous damage was repaired, and the entire painting was cleaned. This fascinating program shows how this masterpiece was brought back from the brink of destruction in less than a year, with the result that "The Night Watch" is once again on display.A Film By Theo Kok.

Rembrandt and His World: The renowned 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn was not only a major artist, but he was also an avid collector of prints, paintings and objects d'art. Many of the items in his collection became inspirations for his work and often can be recognized in his drawings and paintings. Today, the collection may be viewed at Rembrandt's house, now completely renovated and restored to its original condition and where many of his world-famous works of art were originally produced.
Rembrandt and his wife Saskia bought the house in 1634, two years after their marriage. At the time, the young artist's works were selling well and they lived quite comfortably. The Rembrandt's stayed in this grand residence for nearly twenty years surrounded by not only his own works, but also by works of numerous other artists.
This unique program brings to life the world in which Rembrandt lived and worked as well as showing less well-known aspects of the old master and his personality. It was his mania for collecting that ultimately led to the artist's financial downfall. Although his income had declined with fewer commissions coming to him, the artist continued to add to his collection and this finally led the family into bankruptcy. Fortunately, a complete inventory of the collection was drawn up at the time, and this list was an immensely valuable source of information during the restoration of the home.In addition to the many fine paintings and other works of art in his home, Rembrandt kept albums containing some 8,000 prints and drawings - many of which were by famous artists. Not only did the artist derive inspiration from many of the works in the collection, but also from the house itself.

Prof. Joseph W. Dauben discusses the life of Galileo, the origin of perspective drawing and the interaction of art and science in the Renaissance. His presentation includes dozens of examples from Renaissance painting, sculpture and architectural drawing including the works of Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci. Brunelleschi's famous discovery of linear perspective using mirrors and the Baptistry of the Cathedral in Florence is illustrated with overlays showing the horizon line and the vanishing points. Computer graphics are used to recreate the inclined plane and Tower of Pisa experiments of Galileo. Dauben explains how these experiments allowed Galileo to formulate his revolutionary mathematical theory of the behavior of falling bodies. Dauben concludes by discussing the influence of Galileo's scientific work on the artists of his time.

The Great Artists also features leading authorities, art historians and scholars.

          3 out of 5 stars A Little Dry.......2007-01-05

While this was an informative DVD I found it a little dry. I like to show DVDs to my art history class, and this one did not capture their imagination as much as I would have liked. A few two many talking heads.

Rembrandt Films was a small studio that produced more than 50 cartoons between 1959 and 1970. Its main director was Gene Deitch, a veteran of UPA and Terrytoons, where he worked on the minimal Tom Terrific. Those influences can clearly be seen in Deitch's short films. In The Frozen Logger, he attempts to re-create Rooty-Toot-Toot, John Hubley's brilliant retelling of the story of Frankie and Johnnie (UPA, 1952). But the animation is too limited and the timing too slow to give the film much appeal. The Oscar-winning Munro, based on Jules Feiffer's cartoon story about a 4-year-old boy inadvertently drafted into the U.S. Army, also shows the influences of Hubley and UPA. But Feiffer's send-up of the military and government bureaucracies retains its sting. The four "Self Help" cartoons are modeled after Disney's How To series for Goofy and the Mr. Know-It-All segments on Rocky and His Friends. Arthur Treacher supplies a properly snooty narration, but the visuals lack the punch needed to provide an effective foil for such useful lessons as How to Avoid Friendship. The remainder of the films are more interesting as examples of '60s-style humor and design than as entertainment. Suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon

Between 1959 and 1970, Rembrandt Films produced more than 50 cartoons, including Tom and Jerry for MGM/UA and Popeye for King Features. The company also produced its own theatrical shorts, which won five Academy Award nominations and one Oscar. This compilation includes: "Munro" - Written by Jules Feiffer, this Oscar-winner about a four-year-old boy inadvertently drafted by the United States Army is one of America's classic cartoons; "Frozen Logger" - Based on the song by Lee Hayes of the Weavers, a waitress falls in love with a fanciful woodsman who stirs his coffee with his thumb; "Self-Help Series" - Narrated by the sardonic Arthur Treacher, these cartoons--"Self Defense for Cowards," "How to Avoid Friendship," "How to Win on the Thruway," "How to Live with a Neurotic Dog"--help to humorously explore the contemporary human condition; "Anatole" - Rembrandt Films pioneered the animation of classic children's books. This is the cream of the crop, an adaptation of the book by Eve Titus; "Terrible Tessie," "Big Sam" and "Punky" - These series pilots have not been seen in more than three decades; "Three Nudnik Shorts" - Nudnik is Rembrandt Films' signature character, the star of the company's half-hour television series, "The Nudnick Show," airing in more than 20 countries.
