The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in Shrek 2. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Monty Python's Flying Circus), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), and Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Equal to or better than the first.......2007-07-03
This movie was very hilarious. It had the same gags as the first one did, but with many more characters and with a much deeper plot.
This time, Shrek and Fiona are married. They get an announcement from "mom and dad." (That being FIONA's mom and dad) that compels them to journey to the land of "Far Far Away..."
Donkey's back, as is Gingey and the whole crew. Here, we meet Puss, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and we get a glimpse into Fiona's true heart.... a glimpse that makes Shrek question his own existence. Honestly, this movie is very well done. The animation is sharp and bright. The motivation and the plot are both believable, even amid the backdrop of purest fantasy.
Who is Fiona's true love? It's no secret that, by the end of the movie, we learn that Shrek is just THA MAN! (Or is that THA OGRE?)
I really enjoyed this movie. I think it has something for every age.
Shrek 2: Possibly the Worst Movie in History (and I didn't even see it).......2007-07-02
Shrek 2 is one of the worst movies in world history, possibly the worst ever. The jokes, parodies and gimmicks were boring, dumb and retarded, and I wouldn't even let myself fall asleep to this movie because I wouldn't want to have a dream about it, God forbid--watching it while awake is bad enough.
Oh, btw, I didn't actually even see this movie--I just knew that it was awful, so I was intent on never, ever seeing it as long as I live.
I liked the reviewer who suggested we should lock this film up in a secret government facility and away from the outside world. A better idea might be holding a special witch trial and burning the Master Print at the stake.
Btw, I HATED the first Shrek, which I actually did see, and I already HATE Shrek 3 and Shrek 4-1000, or 4-1,000,000, or however many of these monstrosities they force on us.
The main reason I hate Shrek so much is the ridiculous premise of the movie--that "looks don't matter", it's all about "love" and "character". Yeah, right. As if 99% of everyone on Earth doesn't marry partly for looks and attraction (as long as you're not living under the Taliban or The House of Saud)??? Duh! OF COURSE looks matter, they've mattered since Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Marie Antoniette, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, right up to Scarlett Johanssen, Julia Roberts, and "the girl next door".
The moronic, retarded, absurd idea that it's somehow "bad" to like women because they're beautiful strikes me as everything that's wrong with America today--this society is all about denying Reality and living a lie, all for the sake of "getting along", and not "offending anyone". I find the idea that feeling thinking human beings should be prevented from being offended or made to "like people" they don't, by force, to be terrifying. It's literally Orwellian.
The fact that millions of Americans fall for this lunacy, this illogic, frightens me. What is this country coming to?
Please, save us from Shrek, the people who make these sick films, and all the other body snatchers running loose.
THE GREATEST!.......2007-06-28
This Shrek production is FABULOUS! You simply can't improve on PERFECTION. The script, the animation, the MUSIC -- all great. Although I'm not a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed the child-like balance of animated characterizations that took me back some years, but an excellent story line, as well. This is a definite Collector's Item. Everyone, young and old and inbetween, should own SHREK 2. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a "12"!
Very funny and well composed story line.......2007-06-27
Love this one too although I think the first one is a little better but this one has a tons of fun also. Watched several times.
Do not like being forced to sit through other movie previews.......2007-06-24
I like this movie, but I'm giving the DVD a bad rating because this DVD forces you to watch two other pixar video previews and does not allow you to go straight to the disk root menu. Nearly all DVD's allow you to either fast forward using your chapter forward button or your menu button so that you can go straight to starting the movie instead of watching other promos. This DVD forces you to sit through Ben Stiller promote Madagascar... which you can handle once, but not over and over and over.

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

Entertaining.......2007-07-05
I don't watch many animated features but I did watch Shrek and I thought it was an excellent movie. The actors brought the characters to life and I really liked the movie. In fact we bought the other two Shreks.
What is the big deal about Shrek?.......2007-07-05
Well, I think that I've pinpointed the reason I hate this movie: I hate the main character. He's boisterous, rude, mean, disgusting, and that "soft side" of his that's displayed later doesn't even come close to redeeming him. In fact, if anything, it's awkward to watch because no one likes a whiney lovesick person, and they're even worse when you already hate them... that and Mike Meyers is a bad actor when it comes to displaying angst. I'm not saying that it's because Shrek's ugly. In Shrek 2, when he's handsome, I still found him annoying and repulsive. I have no idea why Fiona fell in love with him. Not that I was that big a fan of Fiona either, mind you.
Oh, and I agree with the people who said that the film contradicts its message by making Fiona an ogre at the end. If they really wanted to be subversive to the fairy tale movie genre, they should have had her stay pretty and marry the ogre anyway. Shrek's message is the same as Beauty and the Beast's, only it's two ugly people (or ogres) instead or two beautiful ones. Way to stick it to Disney... not.
DEVERITAS, DEVERITAS!!!!.......2007-06-30
¡¡COMPRENLA!!!
"Monsters, Inc." is much better than this by 20 miles!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-22
This movie isn't all that great. It is only funny in the beginning. Princess Fiona kind of gives me on my nerves and what is all this talking about LOVE in the end????????? Please, this movie isn't really that good!! Monsters, Inc was much better, more funnier, more enjoyable, much better. Get Monsters, Inc insted. That is the movie of the feature and will always be. Shrek PG
Doesn't everybody like movies? Sorry I'm getting off track! Their different categories in movies, my favorite is comedy movies. I'm going to talk about a popular movie that has two sequels, and no , I'm not talking about Shrek 2 or 3.I'm talking about shrek the
Original. In the movie it starts off with the two main characters, Shrek and Donkey, going off on a dangerous adventure to save Princess Fiona, so Shrek can get his home
Back. Throughout the movie there is a lot of comedy. You also meet a lot of characters,
That come and go during the movie such as Gingy, the gingerbread man.
My opinion is that this movie is very funny. If I was on a deserted island and could only bring four things, I would bring this movie, a TV, a generator, and DVD player. When I saw this movie I could not stop talking about it. If I could rate this movie from one to ten I think it would be a ten.
I recommend this movie to everybody! This is an outstanding movie. If you didn't see this movie, you should go and rent it now.

Fairy tales and contemporary satire collide in Ella Enchanted, based upon the enormously popular young adult novel by Gail Carson Levine. Ella (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries) received an unfortunate fairy gift in her cradle: No matter what anyone tells her to do, she's compelled to obey. Despite this, Ella grows up to be a headstrong young woman who refuses to swoon at the sight of a charming young prince (Hugh Dancy). To get her gift removed, Ella braves a forest packed with ogres, elves, and giants to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill, Vol. 1). Much like Shrek, Ella Enchanted is sprinkled with comic modern references; for some, this will make the whimsy too cute, while others will appreciate the snarky jabs. Also featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, and many others. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Anne Hathaway, the delightful star of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, is Ella in the charming fairy tale adventure ELLA ENCHANTED. On the day of her birth, Ella is given a gift by her Fairy Godmother -- the gift of obedience, which is also a curse. Under no circumstances can Ella refuse anything she is asked to do, no matter how wicked it may be. Tired of being taken advantage of, Ella, with a talking book as her companion, leaves home to find her Fairy Godmother and return her unwanted gift. This simple errand soon turns into an amazing journey filled with ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves, and the plotting of Prince Charmont's evil uncle who wants to take over the Crown and rule the kingdom. Bursting with colorful characters, music, wit, and whimsy, ELLA ENCHANTED is a truly enchanting and heartwarming tale that will captivate the entire family.
Customer Reviews:
fun, looney with a point.......2007-06-14
What would life be like if you obeyed literally everything you were told, even accidently, like "spill the beans"? You'd have no choice if someone found out your secret and used it against you. That's the case here, which gives some food for thought, but with lots of silly stuff, a great song and dance by Hathaway, and, of course, a happy ending with a handsome prince. Purely for fun.
A very cute movie for all ages.......2007-05-23
This movie is appropriate for young children and is also very entertaining for adults. The music in it is wonderful and there are 80's tunes thrown in with some scenes, which is just hilarious. My little girls love it and I enjoy watching it with them. Very cute and harmless, and at the same time entertaining!
Great kids movie!.......2007-05-11
My [...] loves Cinderella, and thinks this is a great movie too. I also enjoy watching it because it makes me feel young again (I always dreamed of owning a unicorn when I was young.) Anne Hathaway is a wonderful tween actress. I've seen her in older portrayals, but she's much better playing younger parts.
My daughter and I love this movie, but it's an either you love it or hate it movie. My husband hates it. I guess that's the reason for the bad and good reviews.
Loved the movie..NOTHING like the book........2007-05-04
My daughter read Ella Enchanted for school and she liked it so much we decided to rent the movie. All throughout, my daughter kept saying, "That's not what happened!" "This is nothing like the book!". I finally just told her to stop and enjoy the movie for what it is. Nice movie, great for tweens, but don't expect it to be like the book.
A NEW CLASSIC.......2007-03-31
I purhased Ella on DVD after my girls started watching it daily. My kids have limits on their TV time, and one movie takes up most of their daily allotment. I know a movie's a hit when my kids would rather watch it than tune into Nickelodean or the Disney channel. This movie will be one of our classics. I'll put it away for a while and every so often the kids will pull it out and watch it every day for a few days then back it will go until the next time.
Ella Enchanted is a new fairy tale that deals with human and civil rights issues in ways children can understand and still be entertained by. The storyline and narration are great, even for kids with short attention spans.
Since ordering the movie, I've also purchased the CD and book. I highly recommend this fun movie.

Made for a fraction of the cost of Oliver Stone's similarly themed Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation is more persuasively outragous in its cultural satire, scarier in its violence, and more profound in its vision of a hate-fueled, media-drunk America seemingly determined to eat its young and dwell stupidly on their vengeance. Rose McGowan (Scream), James Duval (Nowhere), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!) star as a trio of friends (Schaech's character actually being a complete stranger who steps into their car and into their lives one club-hopping night) who end up on a sex-and-crime spree that draws the fixed stare of television coverage. Araki makes a case for their continuing innocence in a society whose anti-outsider malevolence is barely disguised in the media but is quite naked out in the heartland, where a punishing level of bigotry is not unknown. Araki's jokes and techniques are crude yet forceful, and his anger is absolutely clear where Stone's was obscured and overreaching. The climax is among the most shattering and enraged scenes of '90s cinema. The DVD includes cast information, a theatrical trailer, and French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

surprise ending.......2007-06-18
didn't like it, blood didn't look real, i'd pass
I love this film.......2007-05-16
I must first admit that I picked up this film because James Duval is a total stud, but it turned out to be a really good and interesting film.
good cult flick.......2007-05-16
This was a good film although a bit disturbing with the nature of the actors in the movie. I did enjoy the somewhat constant "fear" of the main character being caught and the loss of innocense.
Yup, its a crazy one allright........2007-03-24
Yeah, I saw this movie when it came out NC-17. Yeah, I was like 17, I was disturbed, it was a cold February night downtown, my key broke off in my door and I had to pay a tow truck driver to tow me 55 mile home. The part with Perry at the counter and Skinny Puppy in the warehouse will live with me forever, as that night that I originally saw it will. It is simply a good example of nouveau avant garde filmaking. Kind of experimental. There were many art house films in the early to mid ninties that would definitly make your stomach turn, but that was the beauty of these movies, the total, unmistakable catharsis.
loved it!.......2006-11-07
If you are a fan of Gregg Arraki, watch this movie! Roce McGowan and James Duval did a great job. Not to be watched by those that can't expand their minds beyond the box...

You'll be happier.

Description
After lying dormant for ten years, the creative machine that is Skinny Puppy began to pulse on all fronts. In tandem with the new recording (2004's The Greater Wrong Of The Right) began plans for a new live show and extensive touring. Pre-production for the live show began and also plans to capture the experience of Skinny Puppy live in a way that had never been done before.
On the second leg of the incredibly successful North American tour, two live shows would be recorded. The infamous Spectrum in Montreal and Koolhaus in Toronto became the venues of choice paying homage to Puppy's Canadian roots. Seven cameras and a mobile audio truck were rolled out to capture the event. The images were recorded in Hi-definition video and multiple layers of microphones were placed throughout the room to capture the elements which would form the basis of a killer 5.1 Dolby surround mix. The result is an incredibly true representation of what it is like to have the intense experience of witnessing Skinny Puppy live. The production value of the live show is outstanding in all respects and the set list is the best of the best of Puppy's prolific catalogue.
Skinny Puppy fans are fanatical when it comes to collecting anything to do with the band as evidenced by the large number of bootleg videos which circulate in the bitstream. This DVD will fill a great void for the fans who have always wanted to see and hear the show in all its frenetic glory. The special features make the disc a must have as they will go down in history as the quintessential reference for any hardcore Puppy follower.

I felt like I was there at the concert........2007-04-11
Well, almost. The seats were good and I drank straight out of the bottle. The DVD wasn't what I thought I had purchased but I'm not at all unhappy about getting it. Very, very, very good quality audio/video and I don't mind watching it often.
Not.....political?.......2007-01-31
Not so much a review, I just picked the DVD up during my lunch break, I just have to say: "Skinny Puppy has never been an outwardly political type of band"? Ummmm, as a loooooongtime fan, I must strongly disagree.....actually they were KNOWN for being one of the more poltical bands within the industrial genre back in the day. If there is anyone else out there who thinks they weren't political or made music that made social-commentary then they need to go back and listen to Cleanse, Fold&Manipulate, Vivisect VI, Rabies, Too Dark Park and Last Rights. I also saw the most recent tour for the previous cd Greater Wrong of the Right....they were clearly making some anti-Iraq war statements with the imagery they were using which was great. They were back in true form and it was awesome.
I for one will be looking forward to seeing the documentary on this dvd and as a fan of SP, do not find it strange in the least that they would think I might be interested in seeing it!
Skinny puppy Live.......2007-01-05
This is great. Skinny puppy is a great live band and it is a god production. I had tears in my eyes when relived the live show...
fantastic
One of my favorite DVD concerts that I have seen in a while........2006-06-24
I actually am only writing this review now to answer the question of some reviewers about the hidden track. Wait till the end of Eurotrauma, and leave it on and the video will come on. The Pro Test video is the only part of the DVD that I hate. It has a very MTV feel to it. All it is is a bunch of Goths and Jocks break dancing. Skinny Puppy have made so many great music videos in the past. Convulsion, and Warlock are classics. Anyways the actually concert is top notch. It starts off not bad, but it ends up brilliant. Even if I wasn't a fan this would still be a entertaining live show. VX Gas Attack has to be one of my favorite parts. It is really awesome to see a band that focus's on real political issues instead of all the phony left vs right crap. If you read the screen during that song you will learn more about what is really going on than if you were to watch 5 Micheal Moore documentaries. Aside from that every song has a awesome theatrical show going on. I have only been a puppy fan for maybe 6 months, so I had no idea that they were so good live. The whole show reminded me of a Cradle of Filth concert. Only I still think that Cradles "Heavy Left Handed and Candid" is a better DVD. The bonus features are also top notch. The documentary is good. If Skinny Puppy doesn't show it the corporate controlled lap dog mass media wont. The Eurotrauma footage is great. It was shot on a hand held video camera. Aside from that it was my first time to see the late great Goettel before his untimely demise. Pretty much the whole time they are getting stoned at hash bars in Amsterdam. I don't blame them. The footage of Last rights and Too dark park is almost as good as the live concert itself.
great live performance....but where's the hidden track?.......2006-05-20
after reading all the reviews on amazon(& procrastinating for a while) i finally decided to buy this dvd..well what what can i say that hasn't been already said, this is one hell of a great live performance by "the braps". worth every penny but the only thing that still bothers me is where's the hidden track? when i purchase the dvd there is a sticker label on the cover stating a hidden track for the video clip PRO-TEST. so do any of you out there have any ideas on how to access dis clip. i've tried a few times but to no avail.

Debating Oneself.......2007-04-05
The genius behind The ogre, and its horror, is that the protagonist, Abel, is Everyman. Do we dare see ourselves in Abel? Are the cultural, racial, political, religious blinders that we unconsciously wear available to our conscious mind, or are we simply the victims of ignorance, rationalization or fear? To underestand a film like this one really has to be mature at all levels. Could I have been an unwitting dupe of the Nazis? Of course. And from this realization is born conscience and humility.
Children of Light, Children of Darkness.......2003-10-19
Is a man's character forged at birth, in his genes---or is it determined by his experiences, by his loves, by his ambitions, by his will? What is the difference between a man and a child? Why is the dreamworld common to a child's playtime any more---or less---real than the often nightmarish, brutal 'reality' common to grown-ups?
These are questions that Volker Schlondorff's fine, haunting, surreal and compulsively watchable "The Ogre" spends a great deal of time with, though Schlondorff is far too subltle and skilled a craftsman to beat the viewer over the head with these things---at least, until the movie's final minutes, which felt oddly ham-handed (given what had preceded them) and grafted on to a film that devotes itself to the mysteries, secret fantasies, and occasional horrors of childhood.
"The Ogre" mixes a very modern evil, Nazi Germany, with a very ancient one, the legend of the Ogre (known in Germany as the Erl-Konig, the horrible "Erl-King"), stirs them together in Schlondorff's black cauldron, and produces a potent, visually haunting witche's brew indeed. The movie chronicles the short, bizarre, and strangely happy life of Abel Tiffauges(played brilliantly by John Malkovich), a Frenchman who strikes up easy friendships with children, chiefly because he himself is in many ways a child: innocent, simple but not simplistic, drawn to myths and fairy tales and ripping yarns of adventure in the Canadian wilderness---and especially the silly faces and scary spook voices that endear him to his young friends and, as "The Ogre" progresses, his charges.
Wrongfully accused of attacking a young girl, Abel is spared prison by the outbreak of World War II, and agrees to join the army to fight the Germans. His brief military career is brought to a halt when his command unit, blithely sipping champagne and discussing the use of carrier pigeons on the front, is captured by German soldiers. Abel is sent East on a prison train, and it is at this point "The Ogre" slips into high gear---and takes a decidedly surreal turn.
While Abel's companions plot everything from escape to using Abel's pigeons to convey information back to the doomed French High Command (they ultimately eat the pigeons, causing Abel, in his fanciful way, to renounce the Motherland forever), Abel sees his imprisonment, ironically, as a doorway to freedom. He gazes upon the passing German countryside he glimpses from the slats in his boxcar, and imagines his dream: a cabin, smoke curling up from the chimney, deep in remote woods.
Interned at a German prison camp, while his comrades toil to build a landing strip, Abel wanders off into the nearby woods, discovering the cabin of his dreams---and a moose, "The Ogre", who roams the surrounding wilderness. Rather than plot escape, Abel returns to his prison camp, but makes weekly visits to the cabin in the woods, and ultimately encounters the keeper of the estate, Hitler's Chief Forrester, who takes the simple man under his wing and transfers him to SS Reichmarshall Hermann Goerring's hunting lodge, where Abel begins his slow, strange transformation into a procurer of young boys for nearby Nazi Kaltenborn Castle and Hitler Youth training camp, and into the Legend itself: the Ogre, eater of children.
There is far too much to "The Ogre" to describe in a brief review; it is a masterful, compelling, gorgeously shot film, and from Goerring's opulent hunting lodge, to the medieval castle that is the SS redoubt, to the sublime carnage of the hunt, to the sequences in which Malkovich pursues terrified boys through a darkening forest on a black horse with snarling dogs at the leash---every shot, every sequence tells. The acting is also excellent, from Volker Spengler's childish, impudent Goerring to the deranged eugenicist played by Dieter Lasser; particularly important are the child actors, all of whom turn out utterly believable, naturalistic performances.
But this is Malkovich's movie, and his Abel is no simpleton, but rather a grown child, which is why he is so good with children of all ages himself, and ultimately so much more innocent than the young SS footsoldiers he recruits from the surrounding countryside. Malkovich plays the role with restraint and with a childlike, affable quality which underscores why so many decent minds could have been ensnared by Nazi Germany, and this touches on the film's underlying notion of childhood: Nazi ceremonies, with their dark pageantry, their torchlit marches and ceremonies, their pounding drums, were calculated to appeal to the mind of the youth, the adolescent, the dreamer of dreams. Even the wicked, depraved Goerring is himself an easily distracted child, and is soothed by Abel in a moment of pique, dipping his fat hands into a bowl of gem stones to calm himself.
"The Ogre" is shot as a dark fairy tale, from Abel's rambles in the woods, to Hermann Goerring as the reincarnation of Abel's sensual childhood friend Nestor (look at Malkovich's face when the eugenicist praises an SS youth's "Nestorian" nose), to shots of Malkovich riding out through haunting forests straight out of the Brothers Grimm, to the image of Jews, fleeing concentration camps in the final days of the dying Reich, viewed as "legions of the dead" marching past Castle Kaltenborn.
There are some missteps, particularly the ending, which strikes me as completely out of character for Malkovich's Abel; Mueller-Stahl also phones in a performance in which his lines are so mumbled that you need subtitles to decipher them. But that is quibbling. "The Ogre" is an amazing movie, one that requires repeat viewings to unlock its treasures. Darkly fanciful, hoplelessly tragic, it is a deeply rich study of the Children of Light and Darkness.
Masterpiece.......2003-02-20
_Pace_ the anonymous Los Angelino who dismissed this film on the basis of a few morbid/vaguely scatalogical moments, this is one of my favorite movies.
These moments are few and mild compared both to the original book _Roi des Aulnes_ by Michel Tournier (where I'd agree that they are overdone, without disputing the critical consensus that this is a rather great modern novel) and to the director's earlier film "The Tin Drum". Here Schlondorff should be congratulated for his restraint. He seems determined to tell a story with beauty and artistry-- portraying the charms of Nazified Germany not in alien black and white but in the beguiling living color with which its citizens actually had to contend-- rather than depending upon shock value.
Abel, the protagonist, combines three images from literature or folklore: ogre, Erlkoenig, and Saint Christopher. Similar to a pied piper, the Erlkoenig is a mysterious horseman who entices and carries children away from home, described in a poem by Goethe and in one of Schubert's most famous songs. (The film also alludes to the pied piper himself with a scene in which Abel plays a pipe to seven boys before bringing them into the castle). The ogre is a man-eating monster who is stupid and almost blind but has a keen sense of smell. Saint Christopher, the flip side of the Erlkoenig, was also known for carrying a child-- but in this case valiantly. The salient characteristics of all three figures are reflected in many details in the film.
With regard to the title figure, however, little in either the screenplay or Malkovitch's characterization suggets that Abel is feeble-minded. He is a reader, a skilled auto mechanic, and comfortably bilingual. Herein lies the clue, as I see it, to the message that our Angeleno can't find. Abel's stupidity and blindness were primarily moral, and it is a fact of history that this same failing afflicted millions of intelligent people in the presence of Nazi ideology. As Count Kaltenborn observed, for a long time Abel, along with hundreds of normal boys, was intrigued by the flags, torches, and nocturnal ceremonies designed to appeal to weak minds. The Nazis co-opted and twisted the history and culture of which the Germans were justly proud: genealogy, chivalry, romance, legend, even traditional Christian symbolism. They also co-opted and twisted both Kaltenborn (the ancient aristocrat) and Abel (the admiring newcomer), shrewdly appealing to their particular tastes, desires, and sense of self. In return Abel tells us "this school felt like home... I was happy with my new mission." The realization dawned on him slowly that, despite doing what he loved and did best, and with the best of intentions, he was aiding and abetting an evil and catastrophic regime. But once it penetrated, his behavior, far from trivial, became heroic while remaining completely true to himself. I'd like to hear this critic's suggestions as to how anyone in his situation could have done better.
In one sense this story was a fairy tale. In another, it was quite real: it happened to an entire nation. As the historian John Lukacs said, understanding history depends on self- understanding. Only if we viewers realize how we might succomb to the same blandishments can we prevent such a disaster from befalling us.
Original, featuring a fine performance by Malkovich.......2001-10-13
This strange and original work is a French film about Nazi Germany done in English. There are no subtitles. Director Volker Schlondorff is German, the screenplay is by veteran French writer Jean-Claude-Carriere, who has scores of films to his credit including Bell de Jour (1967) and Valmont (1989), and the star is the American, John Malkovich, who plays a French simpleton named Abel Tiffauges who ends up as a servant in Field Marshall Herman Goering's hunting estate during World War II, and then later in a Hitler youth academy for boys.
Malkovich's Abel is enormously sympathetic because he has suffered but harbors no bitterness, because he genuinely loves children, and because he has a certain magic about him based on his childish belief that somehow he will survive any catastrophe. In a boy's home as a child he survives the brutality of a proto Goering-like fat boy, and then later as an auto mechanic he overcomes a false accusation of child molestation. Both of these little stories are vividly rendered and seem entirely realistic. Then begins Abel's war time adventures, and it is here that the story becomes, as some have observed, something of a fairy tale. Abel is able to leave his barracks at the prison to wander about where he meets a blind moose and then a German army officer at a deserted cabin in the woods. This leads to his being established at Goering's hunting estate, and from there to the Hitler youth academy where he is treated as a privileged servant. We see the Nazis as just another part of the bizarre personages of his world.
The depiction of Goering as a kind of self-indulgent Nero, living in opulence as the world burns, seemed entirely believable. The overall portrait of the Germans in an objective and balanced manner was refreshing and thought-provoking and one of the strengths of the film. The Nazi eugenicist is contrasted with the officer who was part of a failed plot against Hitler, both men enormously sincere and dedicated, the one unbalanced, the other unlucky.
This is not a film for those looking primarily to be entertained. This is a work of art, dark, uneven, and a bit curious.
Horrible.......2001-07-26
I honestly don't understand what people see in this shallow, boring movie. I honestly could not get into it whenever Malkovich started talking in his overly-American jargon, while everyone around him was either talking in a French accent or a German one, appropriately (Malkovich was playing a Frenchman). Just that intonation contrasted heavily to even when he was narrating in the background (he a different, heavier voice then) on the events happening around him. It is obvious the movie has no direction and some of the events are utterly unbelievable. It starts out well, when Malkovich's role is played by a younger actor in an earlier time in his life, but when Malkovich comes in, I think he ruins it.
