The ever-underrated director Robert M. Young (Dominick and Eugene) made this tense variation on The Postman Always Rings Twice. Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso star as a long-married couple who run a fish store. When a young drifter (Arie Verveen) enters their lives as an employee and inhabitant of their home, he and Alonso commence an affair made all the more dangerous when the couple's creepy son (Steven Schub) moves back in. The ensuing Oedipal competitiveness grows to an explosive finale, and while the mythic underpinnings of the story may be a bit obvious, the film moves as fluidly and is as involving as any of Young's fine work. Lots of suspense, a richly noiresque tone, and terrific acting on everyone's part, particularly Schub. --Tom Keogh

Amazon.com essential video

Despite its melodramatic title, which carried on a '50s doomsday naming convention, this taut 1961 English science fiction thriller offers an object lesson in the power of story over special effects. When both the Soviets and the West detonate nuclear tests simultaneously, the seismic double whammy jolts the earth off its axis and onto a new orbit sending it fatally closer to the sun--a fate that writer-director-producer Val Guest views from the street-level perspective of its principal characters, rather than an off-world vantage point. The street in question, however, is London's Fleet Street, the venerable hub of its newspaper and tabloid publishers, and the hard-nosed reporters growing realization that their number is up carries its own stark punch. Edward Judd is Peter Stenning, a rugged, appropriately grim reporter, Leo McKern is tough but compassionate editor Bill Maguire, and Janet Munro is Stenning's love interest, in an elfin, sexy turn that's a striking contrast to her best-known turn in Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People. With an effects arsenal that consists largely of a spray bottle to apply beads of "sweat," Guest and his small but crack cast are surprisingly effective, and the cold war plot hook still works, thanks to its uncomfortable proximity to more contemporary environmental terrors. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars The Day the Earth Caught Fire.......2007-06-28

Literate British sci-fi tale is disturbing in its prescience: just substitute the reality of global warming for the premise of a nuclear mishap and behold a spookily familiar result: extreme weather patterns- hurricanes, floods and droughts- transforming our natural world, and compromising our survival. Judd is fine in his film debut (slightly reminiscent of Sean Connery), but it's Leo McKern as loyal newspaper colleague Bill Maguire who wins top acting laurels. An unsung champ from our English cousins.

4 out of 5 stars How would you use what time is left.......2007-02-21

People are misled and only find out when death seems certain , They try to make sense of it all and end up just banging their heads against the wall ,Leo Mckern's performance is a standout ,the newspaper reporter who's seen it all and wonders how he missed this one, the inter reaction between the reporters is good ,and sometimes spoton for what people do when faced with a hopeless situation ,they laugh ,highly recomended and a bargain to

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly Good Nuclear Eco Disaster Movie.......2006-12-24

Pros:
1) Good storyline - due to irresponsible nuclear testing the earth axis tilts and the earth starts moving closer to the sun with the all the expected ramifications
2) Good use of stock footage - cheap and inventive way to provide visual story feeds (drought, fire, etc.)

Cons:
1) Some weak special effects (but hey, this was the early 1960's)
2) Stereotype male/female roles (I tarzan you Jane)
3) EVERYONE is smoking all the time (no wonder so many people have cancer)
4) No resolution to story

The Pros far outweigh the Cons and for a Sci-Fi movie from this time period, both visionary and cautionary as well as believable.

4 out of 5 stars Very good for the time it was made and the low budget.......2006-08-18

I thought this was well put together. Good plot and great dialog. The way people handled the situation seemed believable.

You have to suspend reality while watching because it's bad science. I couldn't help but think of the silliness of World Jump Day (Google that for a laugh). I wonder if the person who thought of that watched this movie.

Still, this is one of the better cold war paranoia movies from that era.

4 out of 5 stars A Prophetic Movie? .......2006-07-29

This low budget work of fiction from 1961 produced during the cold war era and blaming a shift in the earth's axis on simultaneous Atomic testing by Russia and America leads to increasing enviornmental disasters of changes in weather patterns, increasingly violent storms of high wind damage, tornadoes, thick fog banks and stifling heat that keeps increasing to well over 100 degrees! Is this beginning to sound familiar? This movie may be unintentionally the most prophetic movie ever made. Disregard the sub plot of Edward Judd having marriage problems and you have a well written documentation of today's weather changes with the unified suspicion that we are a doomed race. Ours has not been by Atomic fault, but may be due to increasing sun activity or perhaps, as this movie suggests, we are a little closer now. This science fiction scenario happens in about a month, for us it has taken years. Yet, the power of the press, with real reporters unlike the news bunnies and manni-kens that report our news today dig to get the real facts from a government hiding the truth. Why can't we get them also? All inconvenient truths aside, will someone please stop this industrial baloney and tell the truth?! Like the reporters in this picture, I really would like to know how much time is left before we burn up. Get extra copies of this film to give to your friends. Perhaps some smart fellow in Hollywood will look into it and consider producing a more modern movie with the added elements of today's conditions. All "rocks from space" movies aside, this probability has a greater implication for the future of the human race. A film of value, although today's audience will be impatient by the slow pace and low volume conversations. Despite this, it is still a film that can fill you with questions!

5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse.......2007-04-22

I absolutely love this movie and have watched it several times. It starts out with a war in Israel and is Biblically based. This is an excellent witnessing tool to use when talking about Christ's love for us.

1 out of 5 stars Brutally awful.......2007-03-27

I personally believe in a post-trib rapture, but I respect other peoples interpretations too, and hope they respect mine.

I think films like Six: The Mark Unleashed, The Left Behind Trilogy and Thief in the Night are pretty well made given the budgets (Thief in the Night 2 has a particularly creepy undercurrent) and at least add value to the pre-trib rapture view.

This film, however, is awful. Everything about it is awful.

Christians apparently all go commando or their underwear gets raptured too. It's all in the attention to detail, guys...

4 out of 5 stars Low-Budget But Worth Watching.......2007-03-23

If you don't get bogged down in such little details as the Israeli general being a latino actor trying to do an Israeli accent (is there such a thing?), or the Jordanian general looking a lot more "white" or European than the Israeli general, or the really obvious Canadian accents coming from the mouths of most of the other actors (Canadians should never be allowed to play anything but Canadians or, if they do, they should never be allowed to speak - like the electric company manager's son in Category 6), this movie is worth watching.

Since the 1970s, various groups have tried to make movies depicting what they believe will transpire during the seven years often referred to among evangelical Christians as the tribulation period - that period being preceeded by an event often called "the rapture" (Titus 2:13 refers to it as "the blessed hope"), wherein Jesus Christ removes His Church from the world. Apocalypse doesn't do a bad job of such a depiction, though I do disagree with the order of events (for example, I'm among the many evangelicals who believe the "battle of Armageddon" will take place at the end of the tribulation, not the beginning). Having an American Secretary of State attributing the disappearance of all the nuclear weapons, the bullets flying in the air, etc. to God (by which he meant this Franco Maccaluso guy who was head of the European Union); having an admiral named Jim Kirk; and having this Franco Maccaluso guy come out on worldwide television and declaring himself to be the god of our fathers (and having the reporters who were surrounding him nodding their heads in agreement) detracted from the credibility of the film. And, again, all those obviously Canadian accents!!!!!!

There are better quality films but this one does have reporters examining the biblical evidence surrounding these momentous events - oh, wait a minute, maybe that also detracts from the film's credibility; after all, reporters today don't actually investigate anything, they just put their political spin (liberal or conservative) on events and try to make people think what they're reporting is the truth.

The soundtrack - Amazon really does need to find copies of the CD soundtrack - was great, though one of the songs on the soundtrack wasn't in the movie (though I think it should have been).

1 out of 5 stars It's awful!.......2007-01-18

It is one of the most awful film I had ever watched. Poor acting and poor script would be a good summary of the movie. The preaching is heavy-handed and causes one to cringe in embarassment for the actor/actress. It is a movie for the converted. It does not entertain; it does not advance human knowledge or understanding; it does not spread the message of tolerance or of love. It does not even pretend to empathise or accept the diversity of religious beliefs on our planet earth. It just full of righteous posturing.

5 out of 5 stars Great move.......2006-12-29

I saw this movie after I saw the left behind films.I wanted to see more films made by Cloud ten pictures. Now for the people who are Complaning how this film is low budgit you have to remember that this was the first move made by this company. I found it to be enjoyable waile at the same time it as a good message. As I went on the the apocalypse series witch are Revelation Tribulation and Judgement. I found the prodution and quality of the movies to improve but stay with the truth from the bible. They also anounced anoter apocalypse movie titled Apocalpse V. As well aas An Apocalpse tv series. They won't be relised until late 2007 but I am also exited about them.Ther web site is [...] Check out this movie an enjoy the story. Don't Complaine about how low budgit it is.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss It!.......2007-05-07

Brilliant script and very well acted by everyone in this movie! I don't know how this movie didn't get more publicity at the time, possibly because it didn't have big box office names, but for everyone who loves an intriguing story, this is one not to miss. This movie will stay with you long after the credits are rolling. Excellent doesn't cover it, the movie is brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Great cast.......2006-10-09

That's it: great cast with a good story and a beautiful body (Alonso). Go for it.

4 out of 5 stars Very good film!.......2006-08-09

The story is about a drifter who is taken in by a middle age couple. The threesome's relationship becomes complex and twisted. To make matters worse their grown son comes back to see the drifter has taken his room and a place in the family. The son is strange and the situation goes from bad to worse.

If that sounds vague, it's because I done want to give up the plot. This movie has a good plot and acting. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Get Caught.......2005-08-24

I saw this movie ages ago at the video store, rented it, and was blown away. It's one of those films that reminds you never to cheat on your spouse! But like another reviewer said, the wife's son is so wicked that you can't help but blame him for the family's demise. The wife and lover happen into this affair naturally-- how could they resist?

This chilling family picnic is the most memorable scene.

This is a great indie film that reminds you not to act on every desire because there are prices to pay.

One of the few 5 star films. If you see it, you'll agree how good it it. It is dumbfounding how a movie like this is so unheard of. I wonder what other films are out there that are awesome that I don't know about.

(One False Move and Bound are two movies not a lot of people have seen that are excellent too!)

5 out of 5 stars Caught in the Act of Brilliance--.......2004-08-17

"Caught" is an Independent movie filled with so much sin that the viewer will feel as if, they too, should ask for forgiveness--

Arie Verveen as the drifter whom appears to be at the wrong place at the wrong time--or if one values adultery, lies, and deception, the right place at the right time.

(Maria Chonchita Alonso) is superb as the gorgeous seductress--The older woman whom leaves (Edward James Olmoes) snoring in bed as she wraps her still beautiful body around the younger man. The sex is so wild it is a wonder Olmoes did not hear them--in the shower, closet, bathroom.

But--to me, the most brilliant role is played by Alonso's son--Steven Schub. There is something so absolutely wicked about him, so evil, the viewer will blame him for the trangressions of the family, instead of the mother.
During a picnic, he sticks his feet in his mother's lap pretending to be her lover--she does not know this until her lover stands to stretch--The look on Alonso's face is unbelievably cold as she rips his feet off of her skirt...

One can only walk with the devil so long--but soon his long nails scratch, destroy, and kill. The sins of the mother will cause the entire family to catch fire, and there is no stopping the flames once they are ignited.

Hell is waiting around the corner...

***One of the most intelligent, astonishing Independent films I've watched in a long time***

Highly recommended****

well, I loved the footage but for that price it was too short.

It DOES air in the Netherlands for your information.

This was a waste of $26 plus shipping. The reasons are explained very well in the previous reviews. It may be a great buy in Europe where cops doesn't air but here in the US I could have just watched the late night reruns on FX and saved my money.

4 out of 5 stars Uncensored, Unfocused, Uninhibited.......2005-12-08

For many people, the battle between common sense and hormones always results in the hormones winning by a knock out. This series banks on that result. People get carried away and think they have found a secluded place for a quick frolic but they don't usually consider how private the area really is. Some actually like the idea of being public or nearly caught.

This DVD contains scenes of people like those described above. The first has a couple in a stairwell. Having worked in a building where a couple was caught in the same way (the security guys watched until they were done and then apprehended them) I know how some people can behave like this. The rest of the tracks are similar until the last which is more of a montage of scenes, many at baseball games.

As these are security cameras or long distance shots (baseball games) the clarity leaves something to be desired. They also lack sound. However, while they may be a bit fuzzy and quiet, they are also uncensored. Except for bikini lady at the ball park no one is posing for the camera. This means sometimes things are not always in full view but they are often enough to show there is no faking going on. A good DVD for those with a tendency to be the voyeur or who dislike the professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Caught by surprise or did they want to get caught ? .......2004-09-01

This tape should be rated X or XXX and sold only to adults.
Unlike other reviewers, I am not convinced that all of these people knew they were being taped. If they did know than most of the scenes are a lot less hot to watch. Some of those from the last chapter are of people who are in sports stadiums. One knows she is being taped but all she really does is toy with eating a bannana and flash you at the end. But others seems to know they are probably being watched and even filmed and thoroughtly enjoy exposing themselves (and more) anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Staged but still fun to see.......2004-07-09

Most of the stuff on this DVD is obviously staged but it's still a hoot to watch. I especially liked the girl-girl scene. There's music on all scenes instead of hearing the couples. I was a little disappointed in that but still I enjoyed it

It's nice to see porn presented differently from time to time. I think this is a fun change to the usual stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Great change of pace.......2003-09-03

I ordered this on VHS when it first came out, and I just bought a DVD player. This is the first mature video I replaced. There's something special about watching real people, instead of actors who are obviously pretending to enjoy themselves. If you're tired of boring videos, give this one a chance.

It's no wonder Caught Up only garnered haphazard theatrical release in 1998. Director Darin Scott, who is credited with screenplay nods for Tales from the Hood and Sprung, tosses everything--including the kitchen sink--into this noir rip-off that borrows liberally from Chinatown and Bound but lacks the intelligent gravity and grace of the first classic or the stylish, tongue-in-cheek fun of the second. Starring Bokeem Woodbine as Darryl, an ex-con who wants to go straight but who keeps finding himself in unlucky circumstances, Caught Up has laughable dialogue and terrible bug-eyed over-emoting that tries to pass for acting, and wastes the laconic beauty of One False Move costar Cynda Williams, as a femme fatale named Vanessa Dietrich (honest!). Vanessa wraps Darryl around her little finger and embroils him in a voodoo-esque drug plot that will have the viewer rolling on the floor in disbelief. Had Caught Up played its convoluted plot for laughs, it may have at least been a camp parody on the genre, but as it is, it doesn't avoid a single cinematic cliché. Caught Up is a goofy mess of contradictions and implausibility. --Paula Nechak

5 out of 5 stars It has cought up with my interest.......2005-09-07

It was basically a decent movie. The plots keep flipping on you. The first part is silly, but what can you say about the 'hood'? That acid on the head was a bit much though. And they never let us know how the fortune teller finds him. She had to know about him. Glad to see that he was able to finally open his club and get his son.

4 out of 5 stars ISSUES.......2005-09-05

IT WAS A GOOD STORY LINE AND IT REALLY SHOWED THE COMPANY YOU KEEP CAN GET YOU IN ALOT OF TROUBLE SEE IT YOU'LL LIKE IT

3 out of 5 stars Must By As Cynda Williams is from my Hometown.......2002-07-12

I thought it was a very very good suspenseful movie that was a bit biazarre at times but still a good watch. I am very proud of Cynda's performance and, I am amazed at her rapid growth as an actress. Good Flick...........

1 out of 5 stars A REALLY HORRIBLE MOVIE.......2002-02-21

This might be the most terrible movie ever made. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY SUSPENSE AND THRILLS!!!.......2000-08-11

It is truly amazing how someone can be 'Caught Up' in someone else's stupidity and Woodine should have realized that after getting out of prison. But instead, he continues to be caught up in lust, love and money. This was a GREAT movie all the way through. Rent it, buy it, just see it!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Pleasant nostalgia.......2007-06-20

This DVD set demonstrates easily that Bob Hope was an appealing performer even when the material was not top notch.

"Give me a Sailor", released in 1938, is Hope's third feature film and he supports Martha Raye in a quite funny re-working of Cinderella. Raye was being given a build up by Paramount so the film is a broader showcase of her talents than the usual rowdy burlesque comedy. She is very sympathetic here and two scenes standout - one is her tearful reaction to being dumped by Jack Whiting and the other showcases her superb vocal talent with a ballad, a talent which was not displayed enough. Betty Grable plays her unpleasant sister and hindsight tells us that all the qualities which lead to her stardom a few years later were there in 1938, simply not showcased effectively.

"Caught in the Draft", released in 1941, is Paramount's answer to the Abbott and Costello's smash hit "Buck Privates" with Hope very much the star now. Hope is a cowardly film star who is drafted into the army and the ensuing comedy is as genial as it is predictable. There is the usual excellent supporting cast, Lynne Overman being the standout, with lots of great one liners. The film was a giant hit for Paramount when it was released but the film is a bit drawn out for my liking.

The DVD contains no extras other than the trailers for the films and some liner notes. The prints of the films are excellent.

    4 out of 5 stars "It's really a picture of her yum-yums." .......2007-03-04

This is another very good double feature dvd in the Bob Hope Tribute Collection and offers two more of his earlier, lesser known films: CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT (1941) and GIVE ME A SAILOR (1938). CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT is a wacky wartime comedy which co-stars Dorothy Lamour, the actress most often associated with him in features while GIVE ME A SAILOR again co-stars the zany Martha Raye and is one film removed from his film debut THE BIG BROADCAST OF 1938, the musical-comedy that made people sit up and take notice of Old Ski-nose. It's pretty interesting to note that, even in these shorter, inaugural efforts, Bob's trademark shifty and wiseacre screen persona was already in full bloom. Even though his best works would still lie ahead of him, it really is often a treat (for me, anyway) to sample his early resume.

CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT: Lily-livered Hollywood movie star Don Bolton (Hope) tries his darndest to avoid the draft but, nevertheless, ends up in the military. Somehow, along with his agent Steve (the sometimes squeaky voiced Lynne Overman) and his clueless aide Bert (Eddie Bracken), who both have loyally signed up with him, Don must now survive the hardy rigors of Army life. But, he and his hapless cronies can't seem to avoid getting caught up in wacky shenanigans which inevitably places them in endless potato-peeling punishment. Along the way, Don does his best to court the gruff Colonel's daughter, the gorgeous Antoinette "Tony" Fairbanks (Dorothy Lamour), of which first appearance so captivates Don that it elicits this response from him: "She looks like Dorothy Lamour with clothes on." Can a skittish actor who can't stand loud noises somehow earn his stripes, win the girl, and also avoid ingesting castor oil?

It's a curious fact that YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH, the wonderful Fred Astaire/Rita Hayworth vehicle, came out two months after CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT and bears an eerie plot similarity to Bob's flick. If you were even mildly entertained by CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT, then I guarantee you'll get a kick out of Astaire, who plays a celebrated entertainer forced to join the army and then finds himself working overtime to get Hayworth's attention. It actually improves on CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT.

When GIVE ME A SAILOR was released in 1938, Bob Hope hadn't yet achieved definite star status, although he was well on his way; here, Martha Raye gets top billing over him, although Bob's name does pop up before the film title. In this one, Bob Hope and Jack Whiting play Jim and Walter Brewster, two Navy officers who also happen to be brothers. Both have a hankering for the same girl, the luscious Nancy Larkin (Betty Grable), with Walter seemingly having the inside track on her. He's about to propose to Nancy - which sets Jim to frantically conniving. Since childhood, Jim and Nancy's long-suffering, ugly duckling sister Letty (Martha Raye) have had a "secrit pact" to ensure that Walter and Nancy don't end up together. Letty, you see, fancies Walter. Watch Bob and Martha as they put their noggins together and, by hook or by crook, attempt to land their respective sweethearts.

Bob Hope is his usual self, which has always been good enough for me. Martha Raye co-starred with Bob in a total of four movies, and it's in this feature that I find her the most likable as she reveals a sweetly vulnerable side in her role of Letty. Then up-and-coming starlet Betty Grable does well as the beautiful, initially shallow and domestically inept sister ("Why, Nancy, how did you cook this? With a blowtorch?"). Jack Whiting does a nice job of blending in with the woodwork as he only stood out in the movie's one dance sequence. Meanwhile, Clarence Kolb, who played Dorothy Lamour's Colonel dad in CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT has a tiny role here as the Brewster brothers' commanding officer.

Nice songs in this one, too, with the then up-and-coming starlet Betty Grable ably singing "What Goes On Here?" and Martha Raye belting out "One Sweet Moment With You" (I think that was the title). As half-heartedly mentioned above, Whiting and Grable do a nice turn of dancing. On the comedy side, I find Martha Raye's face cream dilemma to be a piece of guffaw-filled goodness, as well as the fashion in which Bob resolves that dilemma. Another scene that's particularly amusing involves Letty and a motel bed...

Crafted in an era when on-screen profanity doesn't get more venomous than "Oh, spittle!", CAUGHT IN THE DRAFT and GIVE ME A SAILOR are two tiny Bob Hope nuggets mined from the vaults of Paramount which deserve more exposure to new generations. Bob Hope is my all-time favorite comedian of ANY era and, to me, these are two little film treasures which I can come back to time and again. I don't know how many Bob Hope fans are left in this world and I don't expect people to like these flicks as much as I do, but, even to the casual viewer, I do give both films a hearty recommendation. Four stars from me.

5 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Bridge Across Two Eras.......2005-09-28

This selection from the very welcome Bob Hope Tribute Collection gives the viewers of today an enjoyable opportunity to see a humorous look at America as we were leaving the Depression and getting ready to defend our way of freedom. This is a very intelligent pairing that demonstrates through situations how necessary cultural changes can provoke laughter. If an occasional topical joke is not understandable to some of the younger audience there is always enough physical humor to keep the comedy going. The 1938 "Give Me A Sailor" has the funny and very talented Martha Raye in top billing with Bob Hope. Miss Raye has a sister played by Betty Grable. Mr. Hope is in the Navy and has a brother also in the Navy who outranks him. Hope's brother is played by Jack Whiting. The brothers both want to marry Grable. Grable favors Whiting but also plays the field.
Raye who is a spectacular cook is ignored. After a mistake in entering a contest, Raye is suddenly affluent and gets a total makeover. She acquires a glamorous wardrobe snd is seen in a new light by everyone. There are many farcical situations to keep the laughs coming. Raye and Grable both have some nice musical moments. The other feature, "Caught In The Draft" , from 1941
ties in nicely in this collection even though Martha Raye is not in it. She was perhaps the most popular entertainer who went in person to entertain the troops in the Second World War. The troops all loved Martha Raye for her work during that period.
Bob Hope plays a carefree actor in "Draft" who tries to avoid the inevitable. He is trying to court Dorothy Lamour who is a colonel's daughter. Hope's attempt at avoidance of his military obligations cause Lamour to reject him. In order to win her back he tries to be the best soldier that he can be. There are wonderful farcical possibilties in any military picture and they used here. There are some good cameos by lesser known actors. My favorite is that of Marie Blake(AKA Blossom Rock) as a gleeful castor oil dispensing nurse.

    4 out of 5 stars A Hope-filled Double Feature!.......2003-06-22

Bob Hope, known for his dedication to entertaining our soldiers from World War II through the Persian Gulf War, stars in two pre-WWII military roles in this wonderful double helping of Hope humor.

"Caught in the Draft" co-stars Hope leading lady Dorothy Lamour, Eddie Bracken, and the inimitable Clarence Kolb. A bit weak overall, the comedy is nevertheless a fun farce as a weak-kneed movie star (Hope) finds himself drafted into the Army when all he really wanted was to con his new girlfriend into marriage so he can avoid the draft. To complicate matters, his girl is the Colonel's daughter, and the Colonel finds Hope to be a poor soldier and an even worse choice for his daughter's hand!

There are at least two really fun bits; one is a wild tank ride, and the other is when Hope has to go on guard duty without his uniform, and has to avoid being discoverd by Col. Fairbanks (Kolb).

As Lamour commented in her autobiography ("My Side of the Road"), it was strange to see Hope play a draft-dodger and goldbrick when compared to his real-life efforts to bring a little humor into the lives of our troops stationed overseas.

The real prize on this disc is "Give Me a Sailor", a Hope film from 1938. Betty Grable, Jack Whiting, and Martha Raye co-star in this naval farce. Brothers (Bob and Jack), are in love with the same gal (Betty). Meanwhile, Betty's sister (Martha) is in love with Jack. Bob and Martha scheme to break up the romance between Betty and Jack so that each can win their prospective sweetheart. Naturally, comedic havoc ensues.

This film has more outright laughs than "Caught in the Draft", and seems to be more tightly directed. I also really liked Martha Raye's efforts here, and most of the real laughs come from her misadventures. I especially liked her character's poignant reaction when she learns that Jack asked her to the big dance just so he can ditch her and spend time with Betty.

The pre-war attitudes on display in both films are kind of strange knowing what was about to happen a only short time after they were released. The Army depicted in "Caught in the Draft" and the Navy depicted in "Give Me a Sailor" are both laden with WWI-level uniforms, customs, and equipment, making the films an odd sort of historical artifact.

That being said, the disc is a fun time for fans of Hope, Grable, Raye and Lamour. Getting two movies for the price of one is also a good deal, and there are also production notes, cast profiles, and the trailer for each film on the disc.
