1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2006-01-03

Given the list of truly excellent actors in this film, I expected something special in the way of a continuance of the Poldark saga. The original series was and remains one of my all time favorite adaptations of some of my favorite reading. Unfortunately, talent can be wasted and does not always shine through a terribly lackluster production. A true disappointment!

3 out of 5 stars Would have been a great movie, but..........2005-10-13

This had the makings of a great movie, but it ended too abruptly. In fact, it ended as if there were more episodes to follow. Apparently this movie met with lukewarm response from the public and the powers-that-be decided to axe it. Not a very smart decidion! They didn't give this movie an opportunity to build a fan-base of its own via video sales.

Still, it is a good movie to watch, especially if you are a Ioan Gruffudd fan. Just do not expect an ending.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the original series from amazon.co.uk.......2005-05-19

Don't waste your money on this DVD. It is fragmented and does not have the quality the original series has. If you have enjoyed the series from the BBC, you should purchase the complete series from Amazon UK (you do need to have a region free DVD player though). It is an investment, which gives about 24 hours of addicting televison. Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees are perfectly cast as Ross and Demelza Poldark. And although the series also strays from the books sometimes, it keeps the overall story intact. Of course production values are always less than with comtemporary movies or productions, but I find that good acting and a good script are more important. It is a shame though that they have edited the series (for contractual reasons it says on the cover of the DVD box) and I always wonder why.

1 out of 5 stars Hellish!.......2003-11-25

OK, I admit I'm a fan of the orginal but, being aware that the original cast were not involved I approached this with an open mind. I came away with one burning question. Had any of the casting department actually read any of the books???

The saving grace could have been the presence of Fiona Victory. In the (much lamented) absence of Judy Geeson, she could have made a very credible Caroline Enys. I have seen Ms Victory in other roles and know that she could have brought the right qualitites to the role. However, she was prevented from doing that by the dreadful screenplay.

In short, my advice is stick to the books or buy the BBC series. This production bore no relation to the books and, had it not bore the Poldark name, I would never have made the connection.

5 out of 5 stars Great...but there's no ending!.......2003-01-21

I've never seen the old Poldark series or read the books...but I thought its a great story and the acting was superb. I can't believe it ended so abrubtly. They should of at least finished the story. It leaves you hanging.

5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Gem.......2006-07-16

As a habitual viewer of Masterpiece Theatre for its first twenty years, I find it shocking that one of its top five productions has taken so long to be made available on DVD in the U.S. The series is a "costume drama," set in the late 18th Century. Ross Poldark, a captain in the British army, returns to his home in Cornwall after escaping from a prison camp following the American Revolution. The original novel, by Winston Graham, was entitled "The Renegade," and Ross is every bit that. He finds that his father has died, his intended--hearing the report that he is MIA and presumed dead--has become engaged to Ross' cousin Francis. The Poldarks are minor gentry, but Francis' side of the family has been more prosperous. Ross soon discovers that the bad economic times has led his uncle (thinking he is the beneficiary of his late brother's estate) to make a verbal agreement to sell Ross' last economic asset, a coal mine, to a "nouveau riches," conniving banker, Warleggan. When Ross suddenly turns up alive, and Ross decides not to effect the sale, the stage is set for the rivalry that is one of the propulsive motifs of the series. The entire series (and Poldark II) is a powerful commentary of life in late 18th Century Britain.
The acting, story-line, scenery are all first-rate. Robin Ellis is magnificent, as is Angahaard Rees as Demelza, the lower class raif who seduces Ross after the disappointment of Elizabeth (Jill Townsend), his former love, marrying Francis (wonderfully played by Clive Francis). The scene-stealer though is Ross' no-account, lazy, boozing servant Jud Painter (Paul Curran).
As seen in the U.S., each episode of roughly 50 minutes, had a "cliffhanger" ending. The VHS tapes dispensed with this very effective format (and butchered the gorgeous opening and final credit theme music). The British DVD set presented the series as two hour episodes.
Only "Upstairs, Downstairs," "I, Claudius," "Danger:UXB" and "Brideshead Revisited" are in the same league as the two "Poldark" series.

5 out of 5 stars GREATER THAN "I, CLAUDIUS"..........2006-02-27

This BBC production from the 1970s was even greater than "I, Claudius." Hope Amazon can provide DVDs someday...

5 out of 5 stars A SWEEPING DYNASTIC SAGA SET IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CORNWALL..........2006-11-07

This is a first rate period piece, set in late eighteenth century Cornwall. It focuses on Ross Poldark, scion of a well known Cornish family. He is a member of the established gentry and a gentleman. Having been gone from Cornwall for a time to fight against the colonists, he returns battle scarred only to find that his father has died and left the family estate in ruins and in debt. He also finds that the love of his life, Elizabeth, believing that Ross had been killed in battle, has become engaged to his first cousin, Francis Poldark. He also discovers to his dismay that the upstart but wealthy Warleggan family, for whom Poldark has no love, is trying to buy the Poldark family mine. This mightily upsets Ross, as the Poldarks represent old money and the established gentry, while the Warleggans represent new money and are social upstarts.

As Ross Poldark tries to rebuild his estate and family fortune, he takes in a red headed, feisty, young street urchin who turns out to be a hoyden with the unlikely name of Demelza. Firmly ensconcing herself on the Poldark estate, she helps Poldark rebuild his estate, scrubbing. cleaning, all while falling in love with the brooding Ross, as he moons for Elizabeth and fends off the Warleggans who appear to conspire to ruin Poldark at every turn. A night of passion, however, finally finds Poldark looking at Demelza with new eyes, and his sense of honor compels him to marry her, little knowing that he would be getting the bargain of his life in doing so.

This is the story of Ross Poldark and Demelza, their families and friends, their loves and enemies. It is a story of sweeping proportions and a fine dynastic saga. It is also a story of the intense rivalry between the Poldarks and the Warleggans, a rivalry that would pit the scions of each of these families, Ross Poldark and George Warleggan, in a life long personal battle that nearly destroys them both. Based upon a series of books by Winston Graham, the Poldark series does honor to the author's work.

Robin Ellis is outstanding as the honorable, though brooding, Ross Poldark. When the viewer first sees him, the viewer wonders what on earth all the fuss is about. Within minutes, however, the viewer finds oneself half falling in love with his character. Angharad Rees is delightful as the feisty, impish little red head and is guaranteed to win the heart of every viewer. Robert Bates gives an affecting performance as Poldark's enemy, George Warleggan, a despicable yet, at the same time, curiously touching, individual. Jill Townsend is appropriately cool and aloof as the ever unattainable Elizabeth of Ross' dreams. Richard Morant gives a stellar performance as the kind and compassionate Dr. Enys, a close friend of Ross Poldark. The rest of the supporting cast is also quite strong and contributes to the success of this tale of romance and adventure in the Cornish countryside.

This is a DVD set well worth having in one's personal collection. Bravo!
