Amazon.com essential video
Based on Thomas Harris's novel, this terrifying film by Jonathan Demme really only contains a couple of genuinely shocking moments (one involving an autopsy, the other a prison break). The rest of the film is a splatter-free visual and psychological descent into the hell of madness, redeemed astonishingly by an unlikely connection between a monster and a haunted young woman. Anthony Hopkins is extraordinary as the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, virtually entombed in a subterranean prison for the criminally insane. At the behest of the FBI, agent-in-training Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) approaches Lecter, requesting his insights into the identity and methods of a serial killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). In exchange, Lecter demands the right to penetrate Starling's most painful memories, creating a bizarre but palpable intimacy that liberates them both under separate but equally horrific circumstances. Demme, a filmmaker with a uniquely populist vision (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild), also spent his early years making pulp for Roger Corman (Caged Heat), and he hasn't forgotten the significance of tone, atmosphere, and the unsettling nature of a crudely effective close-up. Much of the film, in fact, consists of actors staring straight into the camera (usually from Clarice's point of view), making every bridge between one set of eyes to another seem terribly dangerous. --Tom Keogh

"Put the F**king Lotion in the Basket.".......2007-05-11
The only film that can be dubbed a "horror film" to win the Oscar for Best Picture, "The Silence of the Lambs" is a film that has and continues to stand the test of time. #65 on The American Film Institute's Top 100, it's also one of the few films on that list to actually make the average film critic's top 100 as well. The film stars Jodie Foster in her 2nd Oscar-winning role as Clarice Starling, a fledgling FBI agent assigned by Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a former psychiatrist doing time in a maximum security facility. There's a serial killer on the loose dubbed Buffalo Bill, who has been kidnapping innocent young women and taking portions of their skin. People often mention that this movie and its book are based on the legendary serial killer Ed Gein. It's not, but that aspect of the story is. As Clarice begins interviewing Lecter, she finds herself drawn further into the case and finds herself forming a sort-of friendship with Dr. Lecter. Now, this is a film that is much like "The Godfather" in the fact that it's been parodied endlessly ("Joe Dirt" and "Family Guy" have recently parodied this film), yet when we actually see the legendary scenes of the film we don't start laughing. Most people who haven't seen this film can still recite the lines "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again." This movie is not just filled with legendary portions of dialogue, but also legendary scenes. Notably, the introduction of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. This scene is simple, yet unforgettable. Clarice is walking down a hallway, to the final cell at the end. When Lecter is revealed, he is merely standing in his cell completely erect waiting for Starling. It's this kind of body language (among other things) that won Anthony Hopkins the Oscar. Few other actors have created characters that have had so much effect on our society (other examples would be Marlon Brando and Al Pacino). Ask someone to identify a line of dialogue from this film and it will either be the line I listed above or "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." This is a film in which Hopkins proved (much like Pacino did in "Dog Day Afternoon" and John Malkovich did in "Of Mice & Men") what a complete actor he is. In a lot of films you watch, you see an actor and think, "there's [insert name here]." When Lecter first appears, my thoughts were "there's Hannibal Lecter." Foster is also effective as Starling, considering she's in damn near every scene of the film. She's also the moral center of the film, as well as the protagonist. Hollywood is nervous about giving a woman the lead role, especially in a role that requires the woman to be both vulnerable and strong-willed at the same time. Foster does both and makes it completely believable. Ted Levine is one of the only actors who could've played Buffalo Bill (the only other actor I can think of that could have pulled off the role is John Malkovich). It's the voice mostly. Much like the line "I coulda been a contender" probably wouldn't have been much had it not been Brando who recited it. "The Silence of the Lambs" is a perfect film, at least of it's genre. The reason it has stood the test of time is for the same reason movies like "Pulp Fiction" and "Casablanca" have. Like those movies, every scene is absolutely necessary for the film to function as a whole. Howard Hawks once defined a great movie as "three great scenes and no bad scenes." "The Silence of the Lambs" has more than three great scenes, several legendary ones, and no bad scenes. After 16 years, more people still see this than they do its sequel and prequel "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon." I'm sure in 16 more years, it will still be seen more than those two films and it's recent 2nd prequel "Hannibal Rising."

Hannibal at his Height.......2007-04-01
The Movie
Nevermind the pop culture boogie man the character became. The only superb film in the series was the first good horror/thriller in decades. It did this not by shedding the humanity of it's characters, but drenching them in it. The streamlined script (relying on exposition by showing memory in action rather than the usual talking head, for example, Clarices memories of her father), the superior direction and inventive cinematography steeped the film in tragedy, doom and suspense. The casting was perfect. All surrounded by institutional squalor and the flipside of the american dream.
The Disc
Finally we get the extras we deserve. I already have the Criterion Edition with it's interesting commentary track and more key players than you can shake a script at...well, all of them actually. Too bad they couldn't have combined the two discs for those who don't have the Criterion. As pissed off as I get about the heinous act of Double Dipping, this was one I couldn't pass up, and the extras made it well worth it for me.
Yet another Repackaging of a classic.......2007-03-18
I have an almost pathological devotion to this Film. Like Cassablaca it is that rare meeting of the right director with the right cast at the proper place in time. It is a tribute to this film that all the sequels and prequels have done well inspite of a less then spectacular treatment of the authors writen word. (Don't get me started on the ending of the Movie "Hannibal"!
I own the original DVD of SOL and the Criterian editon and because of the added extras listed on the sales page I decided to purchase this two disk package. I have to say I enjoyed the new Two Disk package very much but can not really say if it is worth the purchase if you are like me and own any of the earlier multi feature packages.
The feature on the making of the film that show the building of the feature and it's inpact durring it's initial release was very interesting. It shows how unique a film it was and how it's very disturbing story caused such a stur even at Oscar time. I had almost forgoten that.
There is a very interesting "From Page to Screen" piece that I always find enjoyable. These featurettes are always literate and well constructed.
One aspect of the this set I truly loved was the Anthony Hopkins phone message in Character you can transfer to your message machine. I was so there for that. ( I need Help. HeHe)
As far as the transfer quality it is a fine letterbox quality rendering and It is almost theatre like if you have a Hi-Def televison and I urge all who have the Dash for such a purchase to make it. It takes the viewing experiance to the next level.
In the end It is a very good package and I do not feel I was swindled by making the choice of buying it. I don't think alot of new ground was covered from the other special additons but the small diffeances were enough for me.
I like scary movies........2007-03-16
Silence of the Lambs is an intense psychological thriller. Anthony Hopkins is truly creepy and believable and Hannibal the cannibal. Jodie Foster is great as the rookie FBI agent given a case that required her to learn fast and think faster. I like this movie very much.
one of my top ten.......2007-03-13
The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best scary movies ever made.

Manhunter:Though it will always be remembered as the movie featuring the "other" Hannibal Lecter, Michael Mann's 1986 thriller Manhunter is nearly as good as The Silence of the Lambs, and in some respects it's arguably even better. Based on Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon, which introduced the world to the nefarious killer Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, the film stars William Petersen (giving a suitably brooding performance) as ex-FBI agent Will Graham, who is coaxed out of semiretirement to track down a serial killer who has thwarted the authorities at every turn.
Graham's approach to the case is a perilous one. First he seeks counsel with Lecter (Brian Cox) in the latter's high-security prison cell--an encounter that is utterly horrifying in its psychological effect--and then he begins to mold his own psyche to that of the killer, with potentially devastating results. As directed by Mann (who was at the acme of his success with TV's Miami Vice), this sophisticated cat-and-mouse game never resorts to the compromise of cheap thrills. Predating Anthony Hopkins's portrayal of Lecter by four years, Cox plays the character closer to Harris's original, lower-key conception, and he's no less compelling in the role. Petersen is equally well cast, and as always Mann employs rock music to astonishing effect, using nearly all of Iron Butterfly's heavy-metal epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" to accompany the film's heart-stopping climactic sequence. All of this makes Manhunter one of the finest films of its kind, as well as further proof that Harris's fiction is a blessing to any filmmaker brave enough to adapt it. --Jeff Shannon
The Silence of the Lambs: Based on Thomas Harris's novel, this terrifying film by Jonathan Demme really only contains a couple of genuinely shocking moments (one involving an autopsy, the other a prison break). --Tom Keogh
Hannibal: Yes, he's back, and he's still hungry. Ten years after The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, reprising his Oscar-winning role) is living the good life in Italy, studying art and sipping espresso. FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Jodie Foster), on the other hand, hasn't had it so good--an outsider from the start, she's now a quiet, moody loner who doesn't play bureaucratic games and suffers for it. A botched drug raid results in her demotion--and a request from Lecter's only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman, uncredited), for a little Q and A. Little does Clarice realize that the hideously deformed Verger--who, upon suggestion from Dr. Lecter, peeled off his own face--is using her as bait to lure Dr. Lecter out of hiding, quite certain he'll capture the good doctor.
Taking the basic plot contraptions from Thomas Harris's baroque novel, Hannibal is so stylistically different from its predecessor that it forces you to take it on its own terms. Director Ridley Scott gives the film a sleek, almost European look that lets you know that, unlike the first film (which was about the quintessentially American Clarice), this movie is all Hannibal. Does it work? Yes--but only up to a point. Scott adeptly sets up an atmosphere of foreboding, but it's all buildup for anticlimax, as Verger's plot for abducting Hannibal (and feeding him to man-eating wild boars) doesn't really deliver the requisite visceral thrills, and the much-ballyhooed climatic dinner sequence between Clarice, Dr. Lecter, and a third unlucky guest wobbles between parody and horror. Hopkins and Moore are both first-rate, but the film contrives to keep them as far apart as possible, when what made Silence so amazing was their interaction. When they do connect it's quite thrilling, but it's unfortunately too little too late. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:
Classic, fantastic horror set.......2007-06-06
I recently bought Hannibal Rising, and was very impressed. It reminded me of the horrific energy I remembered from the earlier Hannibal Lecter movies.
It's been years since I've seen the earlier movies, so I bought this set from Amazon. I also ordered Red Dragon, individually. It has not yet arrived.
All of these movies are excellent. They're some of the best horror movies I'd seen in decades. I love this boxed set.
Worth it...........2007-05-29
I am a relatively new fan to this genre of movies and after reading the book Silence of the Lambs it was the next best thing. I throughly enjoyed this movie and haven't yet watched the others, yet is the key word, I'm sure I'll enjoy them as much as Silence of the Lambs. I highly recommend this collection for purchase....
2-Chance
Great buy, but a little disappointed........2007-03-31
I love the Hannibal movies. So I bought the three disc edition. The thing that was a little disappointing was that these dvds had NO BONUS FEATURES. I understand maybe Manhunter or even Silence of the Lambs probably wouldn't have any. But Hannibal definitely was released in the time frame to have special features. Regardless, they're still great movies, and I really enjoy them.
Hannible "Trilogy".......2007-03-27
Being the movie buff I am, I enjoyed this set; however, I was disappointed a bit. When I watched Hannible, it says, to watch the special features, insert disc 2. That's where the problem lies; there is no disc 2. Other than that I enjoyed it, although I wished it also included Red Dragon. Overall, I was very pleased with the set.
It was more than what I expected.......2007-03-21
Because it had manhunt which is the first version of red dragon and the first in the series. I give it two thumbs up.

I got exactly what I wanted. A used DVD that was inexpensive and not all beat up. The delivery was exceptionally fast. I will buy used movies from this merchant again.
Disturbing and Paranoiac Film.......2007-02-07
This is a mesmerizing tale of the most heinous of nightmares come true as FBI agent Clarice (Jodie Foster) is immersed into an abyss of the darkest side of deviant human behavior where the flesh eating Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) agrees to assist her in her investigation to capture a serial killer who commits unspeakable atrocities on his victims. Jodie Foster must traverse into a world of dark sickening debauchery to capture the killer. The story takes several turns heightening the intensity and unspeakable terror of her assignment. The story is unsettling in its own right but the film seen from Foster's perspective has a pervasive feel of paranoia as if she has not been given all the information she needs or even further to suggest she is actually being set up as bait. One scene in particular comes to mind when sitting in the back seat of the car her boss (Scott Glenn) speaks cryptically to her and she just gazes at the back of his head once he turns around. In this pulse-pounding adaptation of Thomas J. Harris's novel, FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) ventures into a maximum-security asylum to pick the diseased brain of Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a psychiatrist turned homicidal cannibal. Starling needs clues to help her capture a serial killer; unfortunately, her Faustian relationship with Lecter soon leads to his escape. This movie is brilliant, great and deserves every compliment it recieves. It is incredibly scary and does not pull any cheap scares. Hannibal Lector is the most terrifying movie character of all time because he is not only a cannibal and ruthless killer, but he is also a brilliant man. He is capable of getting underneath someone's skin, no pun intended. Jodie Foster is incredible in this movie as she is in countless others. This movie is so scary and does not dissapoint at the end.Serial killer Buffalo Bill ( played by Ted levine) is another incredibly creepy character and is arguably scarier than Lector. The Silence of the Lambs is a brilliant work of art. It is one of only three films to ever win all five major Academy Awards, and is definately deserving of this honour. It is extremely suspenseful and superbly acted. Criterion has put together an excellent DVD for the film that contains numerous fascinating special features. Amongst these is a commentary by Jonathan Demme, stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally, and FBI agent John Douglas, and is one of the best I have ever heard. The DVD does not contain region coding so it should operate on any DVD player in the world. This DVD should definately be in every collection. The Silence of the Lambs - The Criterion Collection is now out of print, and is no longer available from retailers. If you are searching for a brand new copy on the internet, as a guide, US $60.00 is a good price to aim for.

--Tom Keogh

You really don't know what either character is thinking. Very disturbing.

Description
From Thomas Harris' novel, director Jonathan Demme explodes and reconstructs a classic genre, laying a foundation of emotional and political commitment beneath a perfectly constructed psychological thriller. Fourteen years after her controversial role in Taxi Driver, Jodie Foster finally makes the transformation from helpless victim to rescuing hero in this dark, gender-bending fairy tale of an American obsession: serial murder. As Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, Anthony Hopkins is the archetypal antihero-cultured, quick-witted, uncontainable-a portrait of all the sharpest human faculties gone diabolically wrong. Winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay Adaptation for Ted Tally.

Ten years later in Hannibal, Dr. Lecter (Hopkins) is living the good life in Italy, studying art and sipping espresso. FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Foster), on the other hand, is now a quiet, moody loner. A botched drug raid results in her demotion--and a request from Lecter's only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman, uncredited), for a little Q&A. Little does Starling realize that the hideously deformed Verger is using her as bait to lure Dr. Lecter out of hiding. Taking the basic plot contraptions from Harris's baroque novel, Hannibal is so stylistically different from its predecessor that it forces you to take it on its own terms. Director Ridley Scott adeptly sets up an atmosphere of foreboding, but it's all buildup for anticlimax, as Verger's plot for abducting Dr. Lecter doesn't really deliver the requisite visceral thrills, and the much-ballyhooed climatic dinner sequence wobbles between parody and horror. Hopkins and Moore are both first-rate, but the film contrives to keep them as far apart as possible, when what made Silence so amazing was their interaction. When they do connect it's quite thrilling, but it's unfortunately too little too late.
Customer Reviews:
Great buy for Lecter fans!.......2006-12-31
Considering the first two movies, Silence and Hannibal, were released before DVDs were the mainstream media, selling mostly as VHS tapes, and Red Dragon released later as DVD, it's a good idea to have the first two released again together as a DVD set. Such as in my case, I had them on VHS and then the DVD of Red Dragon; now I can get the other two on DVD for a low price and complete the set!
Just as you would not read only the first third of a good book, you should not see Silence of the Lambs without also watching Hannibal and Red Dragon. They are all essential and powerful parts of the Hannibal Lecter story. One should not cheaply judge these films as regular horror movies for their individual entertainment value because they are all part of the masterpiece Thomas Harris has created. I strongly recommend reading the (now four) novels to anyone who would dare criticize the films without doing so.
In my opinion, Hannibal is the greatest of the films, truly portraying Harris' Lecter for all he is, accompanied by Hans Zimmer's amazing original score and beautiful scenery/culture of Italy. Best of all, the movie focuses on the deranged genius Hannibal himself, not using him as an example as in the two other films. The beast is finally out of his cage and he will not be stopped.
I only hope now that the new film Hannibal Rising, to be released February 2007, will be comparable to the beauty of Hannibal, in its photography and in its musical scoring.
Great collection.......2006-08-20
The Silence of the Lambs remains one of the greatest crime thrillers of all time, and any real DVD collector needs this special edition. Hannibal is also a good movie, not in the same ballpark as the first one, but well worth it anyway. Silence: 5 stars. Hannibal: 3 and a half stars. Also be sure to check out the excellent "Red Dragon."
Good Movies, Incomplete Collection, And Other General Misinformation.......2005-08-16
I see the word "anthology", but I think this word is obviously misused here because the pack really misses some important things!
On many occasions, I have told people that my favorite Lechter movie is Hannibal. When I ask them which movie was their favorite, they usually state their opinion in a way that sounds similar to this, "I liked the first one the best."
So I say, "You mean 'Manhunter'?"
Then they get a confused look on their face and say, "Silence Of the Lambs."
Then I have to explain to them that Lambs was not the first Lechter film; Manhunter was, and it was directed by someone who I find very interesting, Michael Mann.
Michael Mann was responsible for creating Miami Vice, then later directed Manhunter, Heat (with Pacino and DeNiro), the Insider (Pacino and Russell Crowe in his best-acted role), Ali (with Will Smith in the only role he acted in), and Collateral (with Jaime Foxx who won the Oscar for Ray that same year).
Manhunter, co-starring Joan Allen, is an exceptional film because it treats the police detective genre in a more recent contemporary character setting. It's also the first film I know of that primarily focused so well on the detective's mind during an investigation into serial murders in a contemporary setting.
In the role of Hannibal Lechter, the movie features Brian Cox. You may have seen Brian Cox playing Hermann Goering in the TNT television movie Nuremburg which is available on DVD, and that movie stars other greats like Christopher Plummer, Max von Sydow, and Alec Baldwin. Brian Cox also played the lead bad-guy in X-Men 2.
It's funny how many people like Silence Of the Lambs, yet they incorrectly believe it's the first Lechter movie, that Hannibal was the second, and that Red Dragon was the third and a prequel to the other two. Many people also do not know that Red Dragon was an exact remake of a previously existing film, Manhunter.
Since Manhunter was actually the first Lechter movie, and Red Dragon is a remake of Manhunter, how could Red Dragon advertise itself as a prequel? If Red Dragon was a remake of a film that was already first in its sequence, it technically can't be a prequel: it's a remake of a film that was already first!
Excluding Red Dragon on the basis that it wasn't comparably good enough to warrant itself, all three of these films are very good films, but all for different reasons. I also emphatically disagree with people who disliked Hannibal. Hannibal basically created Lechter out of the drama of Phantom Of the Opera (love story and mask included) and is suspenseful in the classic rendition of Jack the Ripper of the 1940s. To shame yourselves with that kind of talk never deminishes the greatness of director Ridley Scott, but rather belittles the people who refuse to accept this film as having any greatness when it pulled off that Mamet script. And on the subject of Ridley Scott, he is one of the top five biggest directors in the last two decades... Everyone should face facts and get with the program, that this is one of his more brilliant works of art which was better prepared than his Gladiator, and easily much better than his Black Hawk Down.
But disregarding preference, these two DVDs of Hannibal and Lambs are just fine, but my complaint again is the omission of Manhunter, which should have been here! Also on the subject of this set, I need to note that the great Criterion DVD company released the Silence Of the Lambs in a difinitive, 3-disc DVD edition. The Criterion edition of Lambs is, as usual, the preferred way to watch this movie for home video. Criterion has built up a reputation of authority in releasing important films and art films to DVD in thorough editions. If you go with anything else, you aren't getting everything.
For these above-stated reasons, this "anthology" gets a single-handed "thumbs down".
Only 1 DVD is Worthwhile.......2005-07-26
The Silence of the Lambs is a great film that makes you scared but makes you think. Hannibal just makes you numb from the onslaught of disgusting and griesome acts, like Passion of the Christ. I guess nothing will ever be rated NC-17 for gruesome violence and depravity. These nasty and un-dramatic sequels should be avoided unless you want to ruin your day and waste your money.
Food for thought.......2005-05-04
I recently had the opportunity to view all three of the Harris novel adaptations in rapid succession - Silence, Hannibal and Red Dragon. Having seen Manhunter already I can say I am far more impressed with Anthony Hopkins' performance in the first three films than I was with his replacement in Manhunter. And, unlike many people who say Manhunter is a brilliant film, I found it turgid, stylistically weak, and emotionally unengaging.
I went to the theater expecting to be horrified by Demme's landmark film so I walked into the experience emotionally armored. I didn't even need the equivalent of a sweater or light jacket to view Manhunter or the better realized Red Dragon. But I found myself involuntarily transfixed by the horrible marriage of beauty and spiritual bestiality in Ridley Scott's surprisingly good Hannibal.
Only a philistine could call Hannibal a less than magnificent piece of cinema. Perhaps its several qualities (all adequately defined by other viewers in this forum) owe their value to Harris's reportedly mixed literary pleasures. I haven't read the books (and don't know if I could after seeing Scott's film) so I can't compare the two.
What I will say is that I expect Hannibal Lecter to lay uneasily on my mental palate for some time after tasting Scott's delectable but fundamentally indigestible meal. Perhaps that is what all these books and films mean to do - to allow us to consume the length and breadth of our capacity both to reach for heaven through strength of soul, and to realize hell through the power of our capacity for creative depravity.
I say watch the whole bunch of them and learn from them. They have a powerful and necessary lesson to teach about the soul of Western culture. The writers set Hannibal in Florence but I kept thinking about Rome, and seeing Russel Crowe astride a hot and angry horse, shouting:
"At my command, unleash hell!"
With fava beans, and a good Chianti.

Product Description
From Thomas Harris novel, director Jonathan Demme explodes and reconstructs a classic genre, laying a foundation of emotional and political commitment beneath a perfectly constructed psychological thriller. Fourteen years after her controversial role in Taxi Driver, Jodie Foster finally makes the transformation from helpless victim to rescuing hero in this dark, gender-bending fairy tale of an American obsession: serial murder. As Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins is the archetypal antiherocultured, quick-witted, uncontainablea portrait of all the sharpest human faculties gone diabolically wrong. Winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay Adaptation for Ted Tally.
