This fascinating adaptation of J.G. Farrell's novel is both a compelling drama and an illuminating examination of Ireland's troubled history. When Major Brendan Archer returns from the trenches of World War I to his fiancée in Ireland, he quickly becomes involved in familial and political turmoil.
The shell-shocked major (played with wounded vulnerability by Ian Charleson) is engaged to Angela Spencer, who lives with her family in the decaying Majestic Hotel. Angela's eccentric father wants to return the hotel to its former glory because he believes that this will somehow subdue the nationalist movement that threatens his privileged position. Meanwhile, changed utterly by his wartime experiences, Major Archer begins to fall for his fiancée's friend Sarah, a passionate nationalist.
The Majestic Hotel and its inhabitants are perfect symbols of crumbling English power, and the central love story brings a personal dimension to the political struggle. Troubles does a wonderful job of retaining the complexity of Farrell's novel, subtly shifting from comedy to tragedy, and the result is a deeply satisfying film. --Simon Leake

Vintage Laurel and Hardy.......2006-01-08
"Pack Up Your Troubles" presents Laurel and Hardy in their prime, with fresh gags and a great uncredited supporting role from Director George Marshall, as the cook. This, their second feature, is an improvement over their first. The scene where the little girl tells Stan the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as he falls asleep is alone worth the price of this DVD.
This is obviously a restored and complete print. There are scenes I had never seen before, and the picture quality is exceptionally clear and crisp. Contrast is excellent, and detail is sharp. If you are a Laurel and Hardy fan, you must own this rarely seen film. You will not be disappointed, as I have been with some of the recent L&H reissues. This one is a winner!!

More Than Meets The Eye.......2006-10-24
As our unfortunate party continue on their retreat, they encounter even more potential enemies and allies. An encounter with a church inquisitor leads our band to a hidden village, and another Scrapped Princess(?). Later, their escape is thwarted, and they are taken prisoner by a princess of the Giatt Empire. Pacifica must then face many questions about who she is, and what she represents. Is she a threat to the world, or just a threat to someone's carefully constucted status quo?
The plot has definitely thickened in this latest installment, as parts of the story get clearer. As usual, the animation is great, and the writing is very sharp. This series just continues to impress me with its quality, and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Troubles.......2006-09-29
One star is too high to rate this film. I'd give it zero stars. This is a very slow moving, boring, turgid film. The setting is during the 1920's in a dilapidated old hotel, far past it's prime. Several scenes are truly repulsive - many rooms of the hotel are full of swarms of wild cats, there are rotting body parts full of maggots found in the hotel rooms and the permanent residents of the hotel are comprised of a band of domineering, bossy old biddies. The other hotel residents are in wheelchairs, invalids and pensioners. The Palm Court of the hotel was supposed to be a garden patio bar - but instead is overgrown with wild weeds and overgrown shrubbery.
The film is very depressing and has a decayed creepy feeling. The star of the film is a WWI veteran who very poorly acts out the symptoms of battle fatigue/shell shock by squinting every few minutes in a nervous tick. His drippy fiance dies and then he takes up in a very odd, lukewarm courtship with an equally drippy local Irish woman. The plot moves so slowly it is like watching paint dry. I am a big fan of British films and "art house" cinema, Merchant/Ivory films - but this is a stinker.
The DVD cover falsely advertises Sean Bean in a starring role. He isn't even a co-star, Sean Bean a teensy, tiny role and his first scene isn't even until 90 minutes into the movie. Sean Bean gives a very strong performance as an arrogant yet sexy, British military captain enforcing British colonialism which oppresseses Irish independence/Home Rule. The troop of soldiers he commands are supposed to bring stability, law and order to Dublin, but they wind up exacerbating the situation. In an unsympathetic role, cast as a villian - Sean Bean manages to give a bravura performance in a very bad film. But his part is so small it cannot save this film.
Unless you are a very hard core, fanatic fan of his work, this DVD isn't worth buying. For Sean Bean fans it might barely be worth watching for the "Curiousity Factor" simply to see him when he was an unknown actor at the very height of his early youth before he become an internationally known Hollywood, bankable star.
For your money's worth - you are better off watching Sean Bean in the "Richard Sharpe" series, "Clarissa", "Extremely Dangerous" "Lord of the Rings" "Bravo Two Zero", "Golden Eye" even "Essex Boys", which I didn't like because of horrendous, gruesome violence is a better chance to see Sean Bean at his best.
The studio/distributors of this film should be forced to change the packaging on the cover of the film. It is false advertising and they are just unethically cashing in on Sean Bean's international star status to sell a very poor film in which he has a teensy, weensy, tiny role.
"In Ireland, you must choose your tribe.".......2006-01-22
It's 1919. Ireland is on the brink of an uprising, so it's probably not a good time for a visit. But shell-shocked Major Brendan Archer (Ian Charleson), who's survived the trenches of WWI, goes to Kilnalough, Ireland to visit his fiancee, Angela. He arrives at the train station and is met by Angela's ill-mannered brother Ripon (Breffni McKenna) who treats him rather cavalierly. The odd treatment Archer receives continues when he arrives at the dilapidated Majestic Hotel--the home of the peculiar Spencer family. The Majestic was once a splendid place, the centre of local social life, but now it's falling down from decay and neglect. Dozens of cats breed indiscriminately in filthy rooms, and rotting animal parts are left abandoned in old cupboards. Angela's eccentric father, Edward (Ian Richardson), greets Archer like an old friend, but Angela (Susannah Harker) doesn't exactly rush to Archer with open arms--in fact, she seems to avoid him.
Archer almost immediately is faced with the growing civil unrest in Ireland. And while the Spencers hunt Sinn Feinners with tennis rackets and ancient weapons, there's a serious undercurrent afoot. Edward Spencer imagines that the Majestic is a British frontier, and his autocratic, feudalistic treatment of the political situation (and the servants) courts disaster.
Following the death of his aunt, Archer is inexplicably drawn back to the Majestic once more. He returns to Kilnalough to discover that the political situation has deteriorated even further. British soldiers--headed by Captain Bolton (Sean Bean)--are bivouacked at the Majestic. Instead of protecting the British community, the British soldiers treat everyone--Irish and British, Catholic and Protestant--with equal disdain. Major Archer--the moral centre of the film--is appalled by the behaviour of his fellow countrymen, but his warnings to Edward fall on deaf ears.
Based on the novel "Troubles" by J.G. Farrell, the story explores the high cost of imperialism with corruption evident on all sides. Imperialism has made the impoverished starving natives murderous, and the Spencers--the last bastion of the British presence--are all loonies.
"Troubles" is extremely well acted. Fans of Sean Bean should be aware that his role--while intense and riveting to watch--is relatively small. Fans of the book will love this British television film as it visually fulfills all expectations. Those who haven't read the book, however, may find the film's tone confusing. The book's structure leaves no room for misunderstanding--the hotel's decay and the Spencers' eccentricities mesh together beautifully, but in the film, serious scenes are juxtaposed with great eccentricities, so at times the film is jarring and seems to deliver a mixed message. In spite of a few flaws, "Troubles" is well worth a look for all fans of British television--displacedhuman
The Major's Story.......2004-02-23
Troubles is a moving, extended meditation on the British presence in Ireland, in the years just prior to that country's independence in 1922. Part comedy, part tragedy, this beautifully filmed drama follows a shell-shocked Major (Ian Charleson) from the trenches of WWI to a crumbling hotel situated in the Irish countryside. In the wake of his betrothed's sudden death, the Major stays on, beguiled by the hotel's bombastic owner, Edward Spencer (Ian Richardson). Soon adopted by an eccentric gathering of staff and guests (all expertly played), the Major is rescued from his isolation, and is ultimately entranced by Ireland itself.
Although the political significance behind much of what transpires between the English and Irish characters will likely be lost on a North American audience, Troubles can still be enjoyed simply as the Major's story, as we chart his gradual transformation from embittered war veteran to lover, confidante and friend.
The British military contingent is the least sympathetic element in the film, as it is surely meant to be. This undisciplined platoon, led by Sean Bean in a minor role, sparks two of the film's dramatic crises, and confirms all our suspicions regarding the evils of colonial domination.
It seems unfair that Ian Charleson, who died in 1990, did not receive more prominent billing in the current DVD release of this superb film. By replacing his cover image with those of Ian Richardson and Sean Bean, the studio has misled the public as to who is actually the star of Troubles, and who are the supporting players.

An Unusual, Symbolic Film about Ireland's Troubles.......2002-09-26
Troubles is a quirky 1989 British film set in Ireland during the tumultuous time after the Easter Rebellion when Ireland as a whole was struggling for independence from Great Britain. The film stars Ian Richardson (House of Cards) and Ian Charleson and opens in 1919 with Major Archer (Charleson), an Englishman, embarking on a trip to Ireland to visit his fiancee, Angela Spencer (Susannah Harker--Jane from Pride and Prejudice), who is also British. Angela lives with her siblings and eccentric father, Edward (Richardson), who owns the Majestic Hotel in which they live.
The Hotel, once a glorious and magnificent bastion during the heyday of British rule, is now a dilapidated, ill-equipped shadow of its former self that is overrun with cats, vines, and tree roots bursting through the floor boards. That the Irish cannot/will not any longer be made to conform to the ways of the British by the British is symbolised by the Hotel (itself a metaphor for British presence in Ireland) succumbing to the wild forces of nature which cannot/will not be denied, suppressed and controlled any longer. The Hotel is also rife with images of decay and putrification, symbolic of the dying state of British rule.
Edward, in an attempt to bring the Majestic back to its former glory days, renovates the Hotel and holds a huge ball. But it is too little too late, and like Ireland herself, there is no going back. The irony, however, is that Edward's ball and the Hotel itself are sabotaged not by the forces of nature (which Edward, try as he might, ultimately cannot contain) but by the unruly and disrespectful British soldiers, by whose presence in Ireland, it may be argued, more harm was done than good.
As for the surface story (if it is a surface story and not yet another extended metaphor), upon arriving in Ireland, the Major, despite repeated attempts, sees Angela only once. Shortly into the story Angela dies (apparently having been ill). The Major then falls in love with Sarah, a spirited young Irish woman, but it too is a weird relationship. That more or less is it, and if it sounds a bit thin, it is because it is. The film is 200-minutes (split into two 100-minute parts), and I must confess I felt it dragged quite a bit.
Though the underlying themes are serious, the film is filled with a fair amount of comedy, but it is of a quirky nature as it arises out of the eccentricities of so many of the characters--particularly Edward Spencer. I have not read the novel upon which the film is based, which I suspect might be quite good--certainly having read it would no doubt have enhanced my enjoyment and understanding of the film. As it stands, my feelings about the film are quite mixed; certainly it's not one that I'm eager to re-watch.
For those who are curious about this film because it features Sean Bean, I would recommend any number of films before this one (ie. Sharpe, Extremely Dangerous, Bravo Two Zero, Golden Eye, Essex Boys, The Fifteen Streets). The cover of the video misleadingly features a large photo of Bean and lists his name in large print beside Ian Richardson's, suggesting that Bean is a co-star. Such is NOT the case. Bean doesn't make an appearance until roughly 90-minutes into the show, and his role is a very, very small one (he's one of the soldiers--albeit the one in charge).
In conclusion, I would not give a general recommendation to this film, and I don't think it would be of great appeal to most Sean Bean fans. It is a very specific group of people to whom this film will likely be of interest--ie. those who have read (and enjoyed) the novel, and possibly those with a strong interest in and knowledge of 20th-century Irish history. (My level of knowledge (which is minimal) sufficed, but only just).

I own a LOT of instructional material in regards to Moe Norman's swing, and this is the most concise and clear instruction I've seen so far. For someone familiar with Moe's swing, this video answers a lot of questions and clears up a lot of confusion, at least it did for me.

Synopsis:
Trouble Every Day was the most scandalous films at the 2002 Cannes, even more stunning coming from celebrated French director Claire Denis (Chocolat). Trouble Every Day is a perverse and challenging tale, a uniquely sensual metaphorical dramatization of sexual obsession. Denis has earned her reputation as a critics' darling with visually compelling and thoughtful films like Beau Travail, and has dealt with similar dark subject matter in the serial killer drama I Can't Sleep. It's safe to say that, despite many esthetic similarities to her earlier films (elliptically presented narrative, little dialogue, sumptuously intimate visuals), Trouble represents new territory for the filmmaker. Denis is clearly unconcerned with genre conventions, and her film doesn't adhere to the traditional rhythms of the horror film. Her focus is not on suspense or narrative drive, but on insatiable lust as human disease and its analogous resolution in the consumption of human flesh. Vincent Gallo, with his grungy hangdog looks, and Beatrice Dalle (Betty Blue), with her uniquely feral facial features, are perfectly cast as the afflicted carnivores. As their respective spouses, fragile beauty Tricia Vessey and stoic Alex Descas do solid work. The film's truly gruesome and extremely unnerving erotic encounter scenes, including Gallo's dalliance with a hotel chambermaid and especially Dalle's seduction of a young delinquent, push the film into new territory, literalizing sexual appetite in a visceral way. You expect Denis to cut away from the blood and gore, but she lingers on it like a lover cuddling up after sex. These scenes are powerful -- dark, erotic, and even funny, if viewed from the remote perspective Denis' approach fosters.

Beware of sex presenting..........2006-08-28
A voodoo-practitioner - Afro-French male doctor's sex-toy creature allowed leaving her locked room by a hypnotised curious intruder being afterwards consumed during copulating, is overpowered by a strong American happened to drop in into a doctor's house at the timing. He had since then fallen into her footsteps of a thirst for blood and flash during orgasm.
Perverted love of "Dracula" mixed with an unstoppable quest for sadist sex of "Frisk", framed with Parisian charm makes this terrific film realistic to a degree of a potential usage by anti-AIDS and pro-obscenity campaigners.
Highly recommended.
a tepid affair that, like a watched pot, never boils.......2006-06-04
This vampire flick attempts to be an overly cerebral affair but, instead, comes off as a pretentious exercise in abusing the audience. Stark and minimalist, it stars a brooding Vincent Gallo as Shane Brown who ignores his all-too-cute new bride (Tricia Vessey) on their honeymoon to Paris. While Mr. Brown has a lovely wife, he has no interest in her on their trip and, instead, searches aimlessly for a former colleague and his wife. I think that Mrs. Brown rushed into her relationship, as she knows nothing of her husband's bloodlust nor his history and murderous intentions.
Directed by Claire Denis whose BEAU TRAVAIL is supposed to be god's gift to film lovers, TROUBLE EVERY DAY is inherently flawed in its casting of Gallo as Brown. I believe in vampires much more than I'd believe that the humdrum Gallo could bag a beauty like Vessey or even Beatrice Dalle (who, while over-the-hill, still looks pretty darned good, esp. when she's got blood dripping from her smiling mouth).
Throw in a snooping maid and some meddlesome kids and put on a very low heat TROUBLE EVERY DAY is a tepid affair that, like a watched pot, never boils. Tedious and mind-numbingly artsy-fartsy, this is one to miss.
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, I COULD EAT YOU UP! .......2005-12-09
Love bites, literally. This utterly disturbing and obscure yet beautiful and tender film tells about people with a deviation - they can't love the way normal people do, they have this obsessive urge to devour their loved ones alive! Just like a female mantis or certain kind of female spiders devour their spouse right after copulating. For them love and sex are impossible without pain, blood and death.
Here we see a mentally-disturbed woman (played by Beatrice Dalle) who preys on men seduced be her sexuality, and a character of Vincent Gallo, who feels the need to bite, to gnaw and to suck blood of a girl he loves but he refrains himself (untill a certain moment) trying to be a reasonable man.
This stylish, wonderfully-paced and delicate movie shows the thin line between true love and sadism, between the desire to caress and to torment. It can have a huge effect on you because this lingering, viscous and sad film at times explodes with truly infernal and disturbing scenes which won't leave you indifferent. Speaking of disturbing images I can tell you "Trouble Every Day" has some of the most thrilling ones among all I've seen. Even if not for the gore itself you would be shuddered watching agony of a man being eaten during a coitus.
This is definately not an exploitation flick, watch it if you like dark and serious movies like "Irreversible".

France released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), French (Dolby Digital 2.0), SYNOPSIS: Just when you think you understand the way the world works, along comes a film like Kursk: Submarine In Troubled Waters to disturb your complacency. This astonishing documentary takes a look at the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk on August 12, 2000, an accident that was inevitably attributed to an accidental explosion caused by a faulty torpedo. In the immediate wake of the accident, Russian naval officers attributed the sinking to a torpedo strike from a U.S. Navy sub, an accusation I assumed was designed to cover up their own carelessness and ineptitude. The thesis of this film, however, is that the admirals were right all along: American subs were shadowing the Kursk during its Barents Sea exercises, and (intentionally or otherwise) rammed and then torpedoed it. The film is damning and its evidence overwhelming: only hurried talks between Vladimir Putin and Bill Clinton kept the world from a catastrophic nuclear war. Another reminder that one should never, EVER take what politicians say at face value. SPECIAL FEATURES: Commentary, Interactive Menu,

Nothing but joy.......2006-01-10
This was the boys' second feature film, and I feel it's one of their best. It kind of begins like their 1927 short 'Duck Soup,' only in the short the boys are trying to evade service with the forest rangers, who need help in putting out a fire, and in PUYT they're trying to get out of serving in WWI. However, they can't get away with this for very long, and eventually are pressed into duty. The scenes in the trenches and at the barracks are pure classic L&H, one constant laugh-riot all of the way through, particularly when they're capturing all of the Germans without even realising what they're doing!
During their time as soldiers, they become buddies with a friendly young fellow named Eddie, whose wife is divorcing him. Sadly, Eddie doesn't make it home from the war, but out of friendship, the boys determine to find Eddie's baby (who is being raised by Eddie's less than likeable in-laws) and take care of her until they can locate Eddie's parents and turn the little girl over to her. This is the story that takes up most of the movie. The scenes with the cute little girl are just great, and really sweet, showing how genuine their affection for children really was. To support the child and themselves, the boys run a lunch wagon. However, the authorities find out about what's going on, and from then on out the three of them have to stay one step ahead of the people who are after them, the people who want them to turn Eddie's baby back to her maternal grandparents. While they are constantly trying to elude the authorities, they are also trying in earnest to find the girl's paternal grandparents, Eddie's parents. However, Eddie's last name was Smith, which means that they're going to more than just a few houses in the area!
This would be one of my top picks to recommend to someone who only knows L&H through their shorts. They might not be as well-known for their feature-length films, but that doesn't mean that their features are any less perfect and side-splitting than their shorter films.
Pack Up Your Troubles.......2003-10-03
An amusing Laurel & Hardy film. Definitly worth getting. My favorite scene was after Hardy hit Laurel over the head with a baseball bat to wake him up...laurel returns the favor by beaning a ball off of Hardy's head. That was funny.
Pure Laurel and Hardy.......2000-05-23
By 1932 the Stan and Ollie characters were solidified and their movie making process was in full swing. "Pack Up.." was a spectacular feature success made during the height of their two-reeler campaign. The bank loan and boot camp drill scenes are hilarious. Not all of their Hal Roach features are completely satisfying; some of the later post-Roach ones are negligible. This 1932 effort gets a strong FIVE stars!
A really great movie!.......1999-06-18
Stan and Ollie are at it again, and this time they've got another partner, a little girl. You could laugh till you died watching the two bumbling idiots as they try to find the grandparents of "Eddie's baby" by going to see every Smith in the telephone book! The little girl is just so adorable! I loved the scene where she puts Stan to sleep with her Goldie Locks an the Three Bears story. The way that she makes her voice go so deep and wakes up Stan is adorable! I loved it!
A timeless classic of pure comedy!.......1999-04-11
The "boys" are their usual classic misfits. The drill sergeant should have recieved an oscar for his performance! This sequence alone is worth the price!Don't miss this one.
