The comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks limped through its sole season on NBC in 1999 before being expelled by the network--but not before earning critical acclaim and a devoted fan base that fought valiantly to keep it on the air. Now all 18 episodes have been released in this long-awaited boxed set, which allows longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy one of television's most poignant and funny programs about high school.
Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty--Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showed failure, malice, indecision, and moments of great clarity. Likewise, the plotlines rarely offered pat solutions to the characters' conflicts--the show unfolded in a naturalistic manner, which was a welcome respite for viewers tired of flashy high school dramas. When combined with its smart dialogue and winning performances (the cast included SCTV veteran Joe Flaherty and Spider-Man star James Franco, as well as the sublime and criminally underrecognized Martin Starr and Seth Rogen as Sam's pal Bill and dry-witted Ken, respectively), the show became a haven for fans of quality television, if only for a brief period of time.
The six-disc boxed set provides over 40 hours of supplemental material, which should satiate even the most obsessive of fans. Twenty-nine separate commentaries from the show's creators, cast (and as some of their parents!), composer Mike Andrews, and fans are included, as are 60 deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and cast auditions. However, the most striking extra is the warmth that radiates from the commentary participants--their pleasure in taking part in such a quality program is palpable, and will undoubtedly be echoed by all who watch these discs. --Paul Gaita

Missed the Boat.......2007-06-27
I can't believe i didn't watch this show when it first aired. This show was masterfully scripted and casted. I bought this series because i've become a fan of Linda Cardellini. She is a regular on the hit t.v. show E.R.. She is even better on this very good series. I wish i could go back in time and watch this show, maybe it wouldn't have been cancelled.
Couldn't Be Better.......2007-06-14
Drama, Comedy, Excellent Script, Amazing Young Actors...this show was just ahead of its time and the DVD collection is priceless.
Discos and Dragons.......2007-06-12
I finally got this show through Netflix and I devoured it and had to order the set from amazon. This show is an under appreciated gem that never made it. I'm sad to say I never watched it when it was on originally. It reminds me of the Wonder Years with a little bit of a kick. As a bit of a geek who hung out with some freaks growing up I can relate to these kids in more than one way, I also am a school teacher and see these kids going through the same struggles my kids face everyday. Judd Apatow and the writers did a great job of capturing the odd ball, bitter, funny, and sentimental moments of school years. I guarantee you will be moved by these shows they are hilarious at times and very touching at other times. The cast was well chosen as well you'll recognize James Franco(Spiderman), Linda Cardellini (Scooby Doo), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) and for those MST3K fans out there Joel and Dr. Forrester can be spotted in a few episodes as well. Enjoy!

Something of a cross between M*A*S*H* (it's set in wartime) and Sgt. Bilko (the emphasis in on ensemble acting, with a ringleader and his band of merry pranksters), McHale's Navy isn't on a level with those two immortal sit-coms. But this amiable show, debuting on DVD with all 36 black & white episodes from its first season (1962-63) on five discs, stands the test of time surprisingly well. Not that there's any important new comedic ground broken here. These half-hour episodes are pretty much all about the same thing: Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale (the always reliable Ernest Borgnine), skipper of Navy PT boat #73, and his crew are stationed "somewhere in the South Pacific, 1943." They're capable sailors, engaging the Japanese enemy when duty occasionally calls, but most of the time they hang out on their own private island and have a good time--much to the chagrin of their blustery commander, Capt. Wallace Binghamton (Joe Flynn), who's constantly trying to rid himself of the regulation-defying McHale and his fun-loving band of miscreants. In that respect, McHale's Navy is much like Bilko. But unlike the latter show's brilliant Phil Silvers, Borgnine isn't really a comedian; with his unmistakable cackle, the actor's McHale, while not above taking part in a good-natured prank, is a less a Bilko-esque con artist than a regular guy, a kind of cheer- and ringleader intent on looking after his boys. The real laughmeisters on this show are Tim Conway, who brings his whole bag of shticks to the role of the bumbling Ensign Charles Parker, and Flynn, who's consistently hilarious. Among the crew, Carl Ballantine stands out as fast-talking Brooklyn native Lester Gruber; TV lovers will also recognize Gavin MacLeod in his first extended TV role before moving on to The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Love Boat.
It's always a bit strange to see war scenes played for laughs--the Pacific Theater in World War II was hardly comedy central, after all. But they are pretty funny. And while the Japanese characters are treated fairly stereotypically, it could have been a lot worse, considering the show's pre-political correctness provenance; hell, many of the roles are actually played by Japanese actors, which was not a given (then or now), and in one episode ("Movies Are Your Best Diversion"), they speak un-subtitled Japanese. Fact is, McHale's Navy is just too mild and good-natured to offend anyone. The sole bonus feature is a dull reunion interview with Borgnine, Parker, and some other cast members.--Sam Graham
Description
THE ORIGINAL 36-EPISODE FIRST SEASON STARRING ERNEST BORGNINE, TIM CONWAY AND JOE FLYNN
From 1962 to 1966, McHale's Navy was ABC's must-see comedy series. With an amazing cast, including Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine ("Lt. Commander McHale"), comic genius Tim Conway ("Ensign Parker"), the one-of-a-kind comic talent of Joe Flynn ("Captain Binghamton") this series remains second only to M*A*S*H as a truly funny military sitcom.
Veteran seaman Quinton McHale is commissioned into the Navy Reserve at the start of WWII. He becomes Skipper of the Torpedo Patrol (PT) Boat #73 stationed on the island of Taratupa in the Pacific. Assigned to his command are six free-spirited, good-hearted swabbies who love to have fun. McHale and his men are constant irritants to their base commander, Captain Wallace B. Binghamton. Binghamton is forever trying to find a way to get rid of McHale and his rule-bending crew, while McHale & Co. are forever scheming to keep him from succeeding. Despite their hilarious party-boy shenanigans and utter disregard for Navy regulations, when duty calls, the crew of PT 73 does its job and does it well.
With its talented stars, great writing and solid supporting cast, including Gavin McLeod (Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Love Boat), McHale's Navy is classic television at its finest and funniest.
Special Feature:
THE CREW REUNION - Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway, Carl Ballantine, Bob Hastings and Edson Stroll reunite and share their memories of the show.
Customer Reviews:
First, best of "McHale's" four seasons.......2007-06-30
The early episodes of Season 1 of "McHale's Navy" are more low-keyed than the remaining three years would be, showing some traces of the show's origin as a 1961 Alcoa Theater drama "Seven Against the Sea" that featured Ernest Borgnine as McHale, but none of the other cast members (though some of the same character names). Watching Season 1 in order you can see the show focusing more on the strengths of the slapstick comedic relationship between Tim Conway and Joe Flynn as the year goes on, but the opening season's shows overall are really no more silly/serious than the plots for the first two seasons of M*A*S*H (and in fact, M*A*S*H's Season 2 opener, "Five O'Clock Charlie" was liberally taken from a Season 1 "McHale" episode "Five O'Clock Charlie" and coincidentally features Mike Farrell in a brief role). Season 1 also features stories from some fairly prominent writers for TV and elsewhere, including the pilot episode by Gene L. Coon ("Star Trek") and others by Danny Arnold ("Bewitched", "Barney Miller"), and Joseph Heller ("Catch 22").
Picture quality is decent on most of the episodes, though there are a few scratches here and there that show the 45-year-old age of the source material. Sound quality is also good, except for the muffled opening scene and titles from "Movies are Your Best Diversion" (the original episode had a slightly jazzier version of the opening theme on the main titles, and someone apparently decided to dub the more familiar version back on and did so -- badly). Definitely worth getting, though if you're looking for the Conway-Flynn slapstick antics "McHale's Navy" is most remembered for, you might want to start with Disc 3 in the set, or pick up the Season 2 DVD of the show first.
Really Funny.......2007-06-22
This is one of the all time greats. You can't stop laughing. McHale, Parker and Binghamptn are great! When is the second season coming out ????
good ol TV show.......2007-06-09
I remember when tv was fun to watch, well here it is. These shows are fun to watch. Good clean silly fun. I always lasugh when I watch these episodes. I can't wait for the next season to come out.
The gang's all here!.......2007-06-01
What a pleasure to relive the zany exploits of McHale and crew! Great clarity and focus on the black and white pictures. I wish that all DVD's were created with the quality of effort and end result that is evident in this first season of McHale's Navy. Outsanding value!
Anchor's Way Aweigh!!!!.......2007-05-25
This series was so inspiring, I had to join the Navy to find out if it was anything like the series...and much to my chagrin, for the most part. IT WAS.....Clean humor, political incorrectness, Very well cast, great acting. It was believable. They just do not make them like this any more. Buy it or I'll put you on report and you will have to stand at Captain's Mast in front of Captain "Leadbottom"...."Waaaahat...Waaahat...Waaaht...I could just scream"

"Only the good die young," a certain piano man once sang. He could've been talking about Undeclared, the hilarious, yet heartfelt college comedy from Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show). Alas, FOX had even less patience than NBC and cancelled it after 16 episodes, rather than the 17 granted Apatow's other fan favorite, Freaks and Geeks.
Directed by Jake Kasdan (The Zero Effect), the pilot ("Prototype") sets the scene. Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel, Million Dollar Baby) is a nerdy 18-year-old who grew seven inches over the past year and is looking to make a new start at the University of North Eastern California. Well, good news, bad news. At his first party, he makes it with Lizzie (Carla Gallo, Carnivàle), the bubbly girl down the hall--then finds out she has a boyfriend. Worse yet, Steven's dad, Hal (singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright III), crashes it to announce he's getting divorced. Fortunately, Hal hits it off with Steven's roommates: Marshall (Timm Sharp, Six Feet Under), Ron (Seth Rogen, Freaks and Geeks), and Brit chick magnet Lloyd (Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Nickleby). Other regulars include Lizzie's boyfriend, Eric (Jason Segel, Freaks and Geeks), and roommate Rachel (Monica Keena, Entourage).
Steven's freshman year will be an eventful one. Aside from the loss of his virginity, he'll get his first job ("Jobs, Jobs, Jobs "), he'll meet Adam Sandler ("The Assistant"), he'll hire a speed freak (Will Ferrell) to write a term paper ("Addicts"), and his RA (Amy Poehler) will have a fling with his dad ("Hal and Hillary"). Other guests include Fred Willard ("So You Have a Boyfriend"), Mary Kay Place ("Parent's Weekend"), and Ben Stiller (the Jon Favreau-directed "Eric's POV"). This set includes all 16 episodes, plus one that wasn't broadcast ("God Visits") and an alternate, Ted Nugent-ified version of the second ("Full Bluntal Nugetry"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews:
Worth the Wait!!!.......2007-06-28
I loved this show when it aired on FOX. This show is hilarious Judd Apatow has outdone himself with this comedy series. You watch this show and you witness all the great talent that's featured in some his current films "40 Year Old Virgin","Knocked Up","Superbad". This show is wonderful!!
One Of The Most Overlooked Series!.......2007-04-12
Undeclared is a great series overall that cannot go overlooked because it only aired for one season. The shows creator Judd Apatow has a way of making shows or movies that for some reason I can easily relate to, whether it be the hardships of high school (Freaks and Geeks), the struggle of a man's quest to get laid (40 Year Old Virgin), or the crazy, unforgettable antics that are involved with college life. To me the genius of Undeclared can be seen in every episode because each one accurately depicts actual situations that one would encounter in their freshman year of college, whether it be pursing a girl that you like, experiencing the freshman 15, or getting a credit card and using it wastefully.
Overall this is a great series that was sadly canceled prematurely, but thankfully was released on DVD in it's entirety which also includes great commentary for all the episodes.
TOTALLY HYSTERICAL!!!!!!!.......2007-03-30
This is just as good as Freaks and Geeks. I loved both shows SO MUCH!!! If you ever went to college it will make you laugh and cry, mostly laugh. I hope Judd Apatow and Paul Feig never ever ever give up making great shows, even though they keep geting screwed by the networks. They are GENIUSES!!!! Please do yourself a favor and buy this - I swear it will make you happy!
Every College Students bible.......2007-01-28
Greatest to never last more than a season. One of the best shows no one remebers. I recommend everyone who loves watching the misfortunes of others pick this up. Great idea of what college life can be like and how it doesn't matter what you major in as long as you party every chance you get!
As a carry-on of Freaks This is good........2007-01-02
As a follow on to Freaks and Geeks, with many of the same actors appearing, this series took college days realism to new heights. Funny, poignant and still realistic is hard to achieve. The plot falters in a few episodes but the series was just hitting its stride by the end of the season. Another potential classic canceled too soon. I found the series thoroughly enjoyable. For any fan of Freaks and Geeks this is required viewing. For all others, if you have a real sense of humor and went to college, or just visited friends there alot, this is something you'll enjoy.

Premiering just six months after the release of the game that inspired it, the animated series The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 integrated elements from the game into a serial-style cartoon that pitted heroic plumbers Mario and Luigi against the reptilian King Koopa and a squad of new villains. Over the course of 13 double episodes, Koopa (who is also occasionally addressed by his American handle, Bowser) and his seven unpleasant children, the Koopa Kids (or Koopalings) wreaked havoc in both the Mushroom World and the "real world," including stints in Hollywood, Venice, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C. (which includes a guest appearance by then-President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush!). Coming to the defense are the heroic plumbers Mario and Luigi, as well as Princess Toadstool and her faithful friend Toad, who thwart the Koopa menace by using many of the power-ups and aspects of the Super Mario Bros. 3 game. As with the previous Super Mario Bros. TV series, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Super Mario Bros. 3 is long on action and fun and short on logic, and while the animation and scripting has dated poorly, the nostalgia inspired by seeing these shows again after almost two decades should help in overlooking any flaws. Longtime fans should know that several original songs have been removed from the episodes and replaced by generic background music; also missing is the infamous guest appearance by Milli Vanilli in "Kootie Pie Rocks," though this was pulled during the show's syndicated run. The three-disc set includes all 13 double episodes on two discs, while the third disc is devoted to supplemental features like "The Writers' Bible" (a rather bland string of recaps that serve to familiarize viewers with the characters and situations), a gallery of background and concept art, and a menu of original songs from the series. -- Paul Gaita

Now only the Super Mario Bros. can rid the Mushroom Kingdom of Koopa and his deviant minions

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3 - The Complete Series (Aired 1990, DVD release 2007.)
INTRODUCTION:
Nintendo made its first successful foray into the world of animation with the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in 1989. With the success of this newfound medium in which to place their mustachioed hero, it's not surprising Nintendo wanted to do another Mario cartoon. The next year, they did just that. Just months after the release of the Super Mario Bros. 3 video game in America, a coinciding cartoon came out. And now it's hit the DVD format!
OVERVIEW:
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 - The Complete Series was released in DVD early in the summer of 2007. All 26 episodes of the series are included in two discs. A third bonus disc of "writer's bible" material is also included.
REVIEW (CARTOON):
This is many fans favorite Mario cartoon. Unlike the Super Show, Toad and the Princess do more that sit out on the sidelines here. Bowser has his Koopa Kids (for the first time in one of the major Mario cartoons), and there are plenty of other, interesting characters/items/etc. One thing this series has that the others don't are regular-basis "real world" visits, in which Mario and Luigi return to Earth for the storylines of numerous episodes. While this cartoon isn't remembered as well as the Super Show, it's no less excellent, and the cartoons themselves are actually quite the improvement.
REVIEW (DVD):
If you've seen any other Shout! Factory DVD of a Nintendo cartoon, you know what to expect here. The picture quality is crappy, without remastering of any kind. It looks better than my old VHS tapes, no question, but more could have been done here. All of the remade, popular music was replaced with the same "Mega Move" instrumental that the same stuff was done with on the Captain N DVD. The Writer's Bible bonus DVD has some interesting info, but a lot of it is pretty repetitive and pointless - I'm sure they could have condensed this material onto the episode discs and made the set a little cheaper - it was likely added on another disc to make it look like there was more in the set than their really was. One thing that annoyed me is that the episodes are NOT listed individually in the menus - they're listed as "pairs" as they originally aired. This means the "second" episode of the pair CAN NOT be selected for instant viewing - you've actually got to select the first episode, and hit "next" until you get to the second one. Pretty annoying.
The Milli Vanilli episode (Kootie Pie Rocks) seems to be the main source of debate here so I'm going to devote a paragraph exclusively to it. Honestly, the episode fared better than I thought it would. All references to the group are intact, and they are clearly referred to by name several times in the episode. From what I can tell, the only thing that has been changed is the music. The band's real music was featured in the original episode, which was replaced with the Mega Move instrumental generic music for the obvious legal reasons. This DOES create a few problems though. First of all, at the beginning, the group is playing "Blame It on the Rain" in the original unaltered episode. Because the song and all references to it have been edited out, Bowser's "Blame it on King Koopa" joke no longer makes sense. Likewise, in the Bowser's Castle scene, the group and the Marios say they're going to play Girl You Know It's True, but obviously the generic instrumental tune comes up instead. The song at the end is changed to the same instrumental, so the group's "tribute" to their rescuer loses a lot of its original importance. My last comment is that replacing it with a generic INSTRUMENTAL tune was a bad choice, since the duo is clearly singing in many parts of the music scenes. So, essentially, apart from the changed music making some inconsistencies and problems, all Milli Vanilli references (and the episode as a whole) is basically intact.
Like most recent Shout! Factory DVDs, this one does have some defects I feel need to be mentioned. All of these are in the Venice Menace/Super Koopa episodes. At one point the video "goes white" for a moment, and there are some audio glitches throughout the episode. It's nowhere near as bad as the "Queen of the Apes" fiasco on the Captain N DVD, but it's still a problem. However, I don't know if this one is the fault of the people editing the show to DVD or not - it's most likely a flaw with the master tape.
OVERALL:
Despite some issues this is a solid representation of a classic Nintendo cartoon on DVD. It's not the absolute masterpiece DVD presentation of the show I was hoping for, but I'm just grateful to have it on the DVD format. If you're an old-school Nintendo fan and/or someone who remembers and loved this classic show, pick up this set.
EDITION NOTES:
The set is gradually becoming available, and by the time you read this your local Suncoast/Best Buy/etc. will likely be stocking it. No word yet on whether or not Shout! Factory plans to fix the audio/video glitches in the Venice Menace/Super Koopa.
A great old Saturday morning series, with a moderate DVD presentation........2007-06-27
This, by far, was my favorite of all of the Super Mario cartoons that were produced, even if it did have the most un-original title ever (the fact that the number 3 is in the title kind of makes it laughable).
It is a very fun show, and is based rather closely on the 3rd Super Mario game from the original NES. This had some very, very memorable episodes, and what I really liked about it was the presentation of the various powers that the Mario Bros. could use in the actual game.
Now, this was a show produced for kids, so if you are an adult, and didn't watch this when it was originally on, you may want to bypass it now, as it's something that you probably won't find much entertainment in at this point (with maybe the exception of anyone who is an EXTREME Super Mario fan, partiuclarly of the 3rd game, but somehow missed this show the first time around).
As far as I can tell, all of the episodes are intact, pretty much in there entirety.
There is, of course, the issue of the infamous Milli Vanilli episode, in which Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad all go to the 'real world' to see their concert, and the music group gets kidnapped by King Koopa. Now, it is true that the music has been changed. In the original airing of this episode, Milli Vanilli are shown on stage performing "Blame it on the Rain". However, after the whole lip sync scandal broke out, this episode was re-edited with generic music in the place of the previous song. Unfortunately, this proved to make the concert scene make little sense because the generic music doesn't even have any lyrics, and yet Milli Vanilli are shown on stage moving their mouths and singing (or, lip syncing, if you prefer). Then, Koopa shows up to kidnap them, and makes a comment saying "Blame it on King Koopa", which is a joke that no longer makes sense in the edited version.
There's also a scene later in the episode where after being kidnapped, Milli Vanilli are supposed to do a private concert for Koopa's daughter, Kootie Pie (a.k.a Wendy, as she is known in the game.. the Koopa kid's names were different in the game and cartoon). Milli Vanilli point out that they have no back up band. In a rescue attempt, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess disguise themselves as a back up band to help rescue them. The joke here is supposed to be that none of them know how to play any instruments, so the music is supposed to sound bad with Milli Vanilli singing over it as they normally would. Unfortunately, this has also been changed, and oddly with the same generic music from earlier in the episode. So, the same music that everyone was excited about and dancing to at the concert is now supposed to sound horrible to everyone (except Kootie Pie, who is enjoying it).
It is true that the edited version is the one on this set. However, contrary to what another reviewer has posted, aside from the changes that I've listed above, everything else seems to be intact (at least as far as I can remember.. it has been years since I've seen this on TV). That other reviewer states that all references to Milli Vanilli are removed, and that is not true.
The name "Milli Vanilli" is mentioned frequently throughout the episode, and the Princess is even wearing a shirt that has their name on it. It is true that King Koopa at one point does refer to them as "Silly the Willies", but that's because he keeps messing up the name of the band and his kids have to keep correcting him.
Sorry for the long explanation for this one episode, but I thought this was important to explain for die hard fans of the show who remember this episode and are debating if they should get it or not.
The DVD presentation is a mixed bag. The menus of Discs 1 and 2 are nice. They are set up to look like the Mario 3 game. They feature Mario and Luigi respectively, and in both cases, it shows the character from the side, as if in the video game, and they hit a "?" mark block, causing things on the menu to change/happen when you make a selection. It is nicely set up.
Where the DVD disappoints (though, not suprisingly) is in the quality of the video. It has not been remastered, and there are even some brief parts (at least in a couple of the episodes I've watched so far) where it looks like the masters these were copied from may have been damaged to some degree. I noticed this damage issue in the final episode (or two episodes, if you count the fact that each one is made of 2 smaller stories). There are a couple of points where the screen just goes gray for a second. And it's not my personal disc, other people have had the same problem (apparently the master was indeed damaged, and from what I have heard there is nothing that Shout Factory can do about it).
The general video quality isn't suprising though, since most of the previous Shout Factory releases like the Mario Super Show and Captain N have not been remastered either. But, still, the video quality does knock down my review by a couple of stars. And the fact that the one episode has some damage is annoying.
The 3rd disc has some extra features, including character descriptions, and explanations about various aspects of the show. There is some interesting stuff, but is does get to be pretty redundant. While they are nice enough, the feature easily could have been split up and put on the first two discs. The total running time of them all doesn't seem to add up to enough to warrant a whole separate disc. I think they did this just to make it seem like you are getting more than you really are.
Still, all in all the cartoon is a lot of fun, so if you are a fan of Mario, and if you watched this show back in the day, I do recommend picking it up.
Edited Show??? No Thanks.......2007-06-15
I appreciate the Amazon.com reviewer informing us that this show is edited. I don't see how Kootie Pie Rocks is intact with no Milli Vanill appearance; the whole episode is devoted to characters talking about Milli Vanill (Bowser calls them "Silly the Willies") & the Mario Brothers have to rescue them from Koopa Castle!!! Not seen it in ages but that and the edited music make this a no sale for me. Good thing I've got most of the episodes on tape. Hence, why would I waste my money to buy something I already have on VHS & could convert to DVD much more cheaply????
The best thing ever.......2007-05-04
Im from England UK and these DVDs from this company are so great I have to import them! In the UK we have some Mario DVDs but they are not a collection, just random episodes and then they stop making them. Im thankful for NTSC TVs and multi-region DVD players. Its a shame there not avaliable in other regions cause I think they would sell like hotcakes. I remember this show in the UK on channel 4 on Saturday morning. I used to wake up to late and miss it at times.
AWSOME!.......2007-04-10
This Show was one of the best shows ever! and I'm so glad its gonna be on DVD, also Captain N, Sonic, and the other Mario DVDs are great!

"He's not a man in a wheelchair. He's Ironside in a wheelchair." Yes, and while TV cop shows come and go, there was only one Ironside, which makes its first appearance on DVD with this eight-disc boxed set, containing 28 episodes from the show's first season (1967-68), along with the pilot that preceded it in '66. The series is like others of its ilk and time, in ways both good (snappy dialogue and very cool, jazz-inflected music, including a theme song by Quincy Jones and scoring by the great composer-arranger Oliver Nelson) and mediocre (slow pacing, and a thoroughly square take on the mid-'60s counterculture). But what sets this one apart is the presence of Raymond Burr in the title role. Just a year removed from Perry Mason, Burr is outstanding as a former San Francisco chief of detectives who returns to the force as a consultant following the shooting that leaves him wheelchair-bound (illuminated in the 90-minute "world premiere"). His Robert Ironside is gruff, acerbic, free of self-pity (told by a doctor that he'll never walk again, he replies, "Is that all?"), and always ready with a sarcastic quip ("Are you brother and sister, or do you just cross-pollinate?" he says to two self-described "flower people"). He's also a policeman who's not shy about bending a rule or two as he relentlessly pursues the bad guys. And while his team (Don Galloway and Barbara Anderson as young cops and Don Mitchell as the African American delinquent who becomes his driver and caretaker) often chafes under his, um, iron hand, he's also a sympathetic mentor skilled in the art of tough love.
Story-wise, Ironside is pretty typical: murder, robbery, car theft, and a smattering of more contemporary issues like drugs and the Cold War. While there are occasional chase scenes and gunfights (most of them less than gripping), the focus is on a facts-first, conclusions-later approach to crime solving; "the chief" relies on the dry, meticulous gathering of evidence and factual minutiae and an almost Sherlock Holmesian attention to logic and detail to win the day. The result: Ironside may be crippled, but he's not lame. The DVD transfers are crisp and clean, but the boxed set contains no bonus material. --Sam Graham

Better than I remembered!.......2007-06-27
I initially wasn't sure if this series would hold up with age (I saw it last when I was about 12 sometime in the early 90's and loved it) but I have to say I'm enjoying it more now than I did the first time around! Raymond Burr is brilliant, every ounce the angry, genius, occasionally depressed detective. Unlike other similar shows from this era (like Dragnet), the counterculture plays (for the most part) a kind of lovely idyllic background. This show makes me very jealous of anyone who was fortunate enough to experience San Francisco in 1967!
A Metaphor For The Times.......2007-06-13
I watched Ironside in B&W (my TV was not a color machine) when it was first broadcast in 1967. It is a riveting show, well produced, with likable, strong, dedicated characters on a mission, led by Chief of Detectives Ironside--not a man in a wheel chair, paralyzed from the waist down by a wet-behind-the-ears disgruntled frustrated would-be assassin; but IRONSIDE in a wheel chair. The show Ironside felt the pulse of the times bang-on: Drainage of the nation's best and strongest to Southeast Asia to fight the very controversial Vietnam War, even as university students opted out with college deferments and rallied, protested, and rioted against the war; and some got killed, as in the Kent State incident. Dwindling support for law and order, and chaos grew and spread. The police were made more vulnerable; a president was brought down, President Nixon. After he was shot in the back by the sniper, Ironside was allowed by the police commissioner to continue on duty as a special consultant; given space to work, and whatever he needed. He then assembled a crack team of crime fighters who were top-drawer, admirable, dedicated, likable people. Watching the team in action against smart, sophisticated criminals is satisfying and entertaining. Ironside is as fresh and relevant today as it was when it was first aired in 1967. Five Stars.
Fun!.......2007-06-05
I really had a blast watching the first season of Ironside.
I was a fan of the show in the early 1970s and saw the earlier episodes in syndication.
However, the show hasn't been seen too often since the 1970s so watching it now was almost like seeing the episodes for the first time.
Obviously, the dialogue and settings of the cases are dated since the show utilized the counterculture that existed in San Francisco during the late 1960s. However, the cases are so well done and such a contrast to the multi-layered structure of today's crime shows in which tidbits of character are sprinkled among the scenes in which the detectives are investigating the crimes that the out-of-date dialogue and settings don't get in the way.
Another thing I enjoyed about watching these episodes was being able to spot future stars. The DVD covers list the obvious ones such as Edward Asner, Harrison Ford, Susan Saint James, Vera Miles, and Gavin McLeod, but it was fun finding others. For example, the uncredited actor who plays a bellhop and has one line in one episode is clearly Mike Farrell, who later went on to star in M*A*S*H* and Providence, and an artist in another show is played by Nicholas Colosanto from Cheers.
Wheelchaired Sherlock Holmes.......2007-05-26
Raymond Burr was known for two great TV roles-Perry Mason and Robert Ironside...and NO ONE (other than Burr) HAS EVER SUCEEDED in playing these two characters (and no one has played Ironside). Burr is Ironside and we are glad for it!
This DVD collection is full season of 28 episodes, the first Season. This stuff is truly timeless. This , to my knowledge , was first time there was a handicapped (wheelchaired) hero as a starrring role in a series on TV. In 40 years that has past, this mystery series bearly dates itself. The masters of these episodes seem clean and almost as good as if theyt would be seen today, almost vault quality stuff. Shout DVD you did well!
I remember watching this armchair Sherlock in awe...and I still have the sense of awe viewing these today
One would wish one of the other Ironside costars (Don Mitchell, Don Galloway or Barbara Anderson) would talk about the show in an audio commentary, about Raymond Burr, Show, the scripts, etc. However there is No such luck..However these episodes are fine without extras
So wheel down to the buy this and get this today

Nineties-era cartoon fans may remember that at one time, two animated series based on the ultra-popular Sega game character Sonic the Hedgehog sped across TV sets in 1993. This Sonic aired on Saturday mornings between '93-'95 and offered a slightly darker tone and more elaborate stories than its syndicated counterpart, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993 to present). Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters) provided the voice of Sonic for both series, but the similarities between the two shows essentially ended there; SatAM (as it was known to its small but loyal fanbase) followed the futuristic adventures of young Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters (which included Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and other characters from the original games) as they attempted to foil the evil plans of mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, who had enslaved the city of Mobotropolis and turned its citizens into robots. Where The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog focused on the comic elements of the games, SatAM played more like a serial, with each week presenting a new dilemma for Sonic and his pals to overcome. Sadly, the Freedom Fighters' struggles only lasted for two seasons (though a third was reportedly plotted out), but fans can enjoy the entire 26-episode network run with this four-disc set, which includes a respectable amount of supplemental features. Chief among these are short interviews with White and series head writer Ben Hurst; a smattering of deleted and extended scenes are also included, as is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, a gallery of concept art, and a printable script for the series' pilot, "Heads or Tails." Devoted fans may also glimpse a reproduction of their own Sonic fan art on the set's case. -- Paul Gaita
Description
The compete series available for the first time ever on a 4-DVD box set!
Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Family Matters' Jaleel White), super fast and irreverent, leads a group of freedom fighters bent on restoring their planet's beauty and freeing its citizens from the tyranny of the evil Dr. Robotnik.
The fusion of powerful storylines, witty banter and a dark atmosphere made Sonic The Hedgehog--dubbed SatAM by its legions of fans--a favorite among youngsters and teens when it premiered on ABC in 1993. Inspired by the phenomenon that took the gaming world by storm, Sonic The Hedgehog likewise broke through the barriers of what was expected of a Saturday morning cartoon.

A look back at Sonic the Hedgehog (AKA Sat-Am).......2007-05-22
What we have with this incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog is arguably the most popular of the 3 American series by DiC and and Sonic X dubbed by 4kids.
With this story of Sonic it is the maturest out of all of them, has a much darker tone to it and dealt with real and adult issues.
SPOILER ALERT:
The episodes are written with a cinematic feel to them in that every episode felt big, dramatic and well worth watching. Season Two is where every episode links up with each other leading up to the season finale that was the Doomsday project.
There was never a dull moment in this series entire run. Particularly with the Antoine double episodes; I think this was done to add some comic relief to the series and the things that Sonic would put Antoine through was hilarious when you see him going nuts.
The voices matched the characters perfectly. Jaleel White is always great as Sonic and Kathie Soucie made Princess Sally Acorn her own character by using her own naturalistic soothing, soft voice. And Jim Cummings in my mind was the perfect voice over for Robotnik with the slow and sinister tone that he used in his voice.
What makes Sat-Am so appealable is that because it was produced in the early 90's it did not suffer the fate of most animated shows of the modern day and age where the dialogue is kiddified. I don't think the dialogue in this show was terribly adult, and by that I don't mean profain material, there was no technical language that kids wouldn't understand. But, the writers of the series wrote a dialogue that was cool with all ages.
What is disappointing was where the series was cancelled just as the writers/producers were getting ready to write and draw for Season 3. Having said that, it didn't help matters that at the time, Power Rangers were extremely popular all over the world. Ben Hurst talks about the plans that they would have done for the third Season and they are good.
I think it would be good for the series to be renewed because the writing and the characters had such depth and richness to them that made the show so enjoyable.
But until then, you can enjoy what is arguably the best Sonic animated series ever produced.
Thank you for your time.
SatAM!.......2007-05-17
The Saturday morning Sonic cartoon was always one of those special treats when I was younger. I loved Sonic, but I was rarely up early enough to catch these shows when they were on originally, so I'm especially grateful to see them all in a single DVD package now.
Sonic fans probably already know the premise behind these shows: Sonic and the Freedom Fighters are in a continuous guerrilla war with Julian Ivo Kintobor, or "Robotnik," and his myriad robotic minions. Robotnik is able to augment his armies by "roboticizing" innocent Mobians (the anthropomorphic animals, like Sonic and his friends, that are the chief citizens of planet Mobius). Overall, the story is a dark saga of resistance that may seem somewhat trite (due to the similarities with "The Matrix" and the untold dozens of fictional worlds based upon similar premises), but it's still a good story. Fans of the Archie Sonic comics will easily find themselves at home with these cartoons, as they're essentially the same story and characters.
If you were a fan of the shows to begin with, don't hesitate--get these as soon as you can. Other Sonic fans may have a hard time reconciling the ordinarily bright, cheery Sonic universe with these serious shows, but they're pure gold, and I say go for it.
I Remember this series and other sonic series.......2007-05-15
This was the best sonic the headgehog series of the 4 that were made...The Adventures of sonic was to kidish for me, sonic underground was ok a little weird, Sonic x is more like Anime then anything, but the best one was Sonic the Headgehog. It had action, romance and comedy rolled into one.

So, take a trip back in time with Spider-Man, Letterman, J. Hours of entertaining education.......2007-06-13
I am fairly controlling about what my kids watch (no broadcast TV, only dvd's that we preview). Since I grew up with the Electric Company, I got a copy from our library and my kids (8 and 5) love it. It has been a great investment to have our own copy from Amazon. We take a portable DVD player on flights, and it is wonderful use of the time to have the kids learning reading skills while they are laughing out loud. Both kids have quizzed us with things that they have learned on the electric company, such as "Mom, do you know some words that have the letter c with both the sounds of c?" Our preschooler sounds out words as she has seen on the show. And all the fun styles and mannerisms of the 70's are fascinating to watch! So, "get it together" and get the Electric Company!
excellent in every regard.......2007-05-18
As an elementary ESL teacher, I get a chance to see just how many hoops kids have to jump through to show they are literate. Mind-numbing spelling drills don't seem to help much, but you wouldn't know that from looking at the average teacher lesson plan. And why aren't kids coming to school more capable at reading? Well, they haven't been read to enough. But they also haven't gotten the right kind of television viewing. As an occasionally rabid anit-televisionist, I apply overly strict requirements for the programs my 4 1/2 year old son watches. They have to be edifying - fun, yes, but educational in the broadest, non-fundamentalist sense. The Electric Company is/was excellent, endlessly creative and on the mark. I find myself laughing out loud when we watch it together. A model approach, both creative and thoughtful - an introduction to a skill that will last a lifetime.
And FUN!
You will be turned on by The Electric Company!!.......2007-04-16
As a person who has devoted his volunteer time to reading in the schools of Webster City, I am thrilled by this DVD collection of The Electric Company! It was great to see Rita Moreno, Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman teaching kids the joy of reading. I can't forget the rest of this great cast like Skip Hinnant, Judy Graubart, Luis Avalos, Hattie Winston, Jim Boyd and Lee Chambelain. What a show. It was too bad I did not see the Short Circus sing "Sing Out" in this collection. This is great family entertainment and educational too! HEY YOU GUYS..BRING ON VOLUME THREE OF THIS SHOW!!

Helps wife who is an Elementary School Teacher in teaching fundamentals to her students in a fun way.
Stands the test of time.......2007-03-24
Bought for my 7 yr old (first grade) girl and 5 yr old (pre k) girl and 2 yr old boy. The 7 yr old is just learning the ropes of reading and LOVES these videos. We watch one or two before going to bed. She can really relate to the learning as it relates directly to her classroom experience. Really adds to her understanding. 5 yr old does not have as long of attention span, mostly osmosis education and entertainment. The 2 yr old LOVES these movies, he is just learning to speak and is in speech therapy, so he can relate to the oral skills involved and orients him to our language. AND as for me...LOVE seeing these vintage times and classic actors. The commentaries are way cool too. As usual wish the item was less expensive. A lot of videos on the cd's. Have to be really into them.

Description
Before The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murphy Brown and Ally McBeal, there was That Girl. The groundbreaking situation comedy starring Marlo Thomas debuted in 1966 and was the first to feature a young, independent female character. The wildly successful, award-winning show continues into the third season bringing to life the comedy of Ann Marie's antics as a single girl in New York, her acting pursuits and her relationship with Donald Hollinger (Ted Bessell.)

That Girl is That Good!!!!.......2007-06-16
I was not even born when this show first aired and eventually left the air. I did see a marathon of that girl last year on tvland, and got kind of hooked on it. It certainly is much different than television shows that are on these days. I look forward to watching the third season, after having watched the first two seasons.
That Girl should of been the It Girl for laughter!.......2007-05-08
How Fuuny was this sictom? I grew up wathcing That Girl & I wanted to be like her!! Many years later, you can still watch this sitcom (over & over again) & appreciate it's content of a funny & pretty single young women trying to get into show buisness but always having something happening to her. This is a Rx for good old fashion laughter.

Zach Galifianakis' stand-up comedy DVD spoofs the classic recorded stand-up performance film format by interjecting road trip footage of Zach and buddy in their red VW bus, and fake interviews with Zach's fake brother, "Seth," between his live stage bits. The splintered, slackerish feel that this editing lends the film reinforces Galifianakis's cool, enigmatic stage presence. Galifianakis' self-deprecating, sensitive guy-persona suits his love of deadpan one-liners in the tradition of Steven Wright. Sketches of the forgetful vegan who accidentally eats meat, or the pretentious illiterate who indignantly proclaims that he can't read, satirically poke fun at the self-righteous. Cut to a shot of the comedian's bus broken down off the freeway, then back to stage, where Zach riffs on his failed efforts to barter jokes for a fixed vehicle. Some segments, such as when Seth confesses his brother's affinity for making homemade ecstasy, are funnier than the Purple Onion performance. Like those on the Chappelle Show, these pre-taped skits rescue slow moments and elevate the stage act into more heavily crafted commentary. Graced with a dry wit, Zach Galifianakis, the self-professed "man who is bored by everything," won't bore lovers of good sarcasm. --Trinie Dalton
Description
Zach Galifianakis started his so-called career in back of a hamburger joint in New York. Well-known and loved by the Comedy Central crowd, he is one of the Comedians of Comedy, played director Alan Finger in the series Dog Bites Man and wowed the critics with his acclaimed VH1 show, Late World With Zach.
A master of the one-liner, with an absurd rambling style, Zach's sharp, resonating humor makes his show at the famed Purple Onion in San Francisco one of the funniest performances in recent comedy.
Off-stage, you will meet Seth Galifianakis, Zach's "twin brother." In an emotional interview with Brian Unger, he sheds some light on his "brother" Zach, revealing how he came to be who he is today.

The Awkward Slapping Bit (outtake)

Customer Reviews:
Good comedy, cool cinematics.......2007-06-09
The stand-up portion of this DVD was funny, I wouldn't quite rate it 5/5 partially because of a rather unsuspecting use of cursing in contrast with his Comedy Central Presents shows. Still Zach is a very unique comedian that deserves some acclaim. There were also other segments to this DVD that gave it almost a documentary feel, the interview with his twin brother Seth which was hilarious and the road adventures with his friend Joe was also great. Overall I think this is a great product for somebody looking for a breath of fresh air in stand-up, as long as a little bit of cursing doesn't bother you.
Not as good as other shows!.......2007-05-13
I have been a fan of Zach Galifianakis for a long time. Zach is one of my favorite comedians, and every other special of his I have seen I always have laughed uncontrolably. But with this DVD there were some really funny parts, but the rest of the DVD is not very funny at all. I would recomend that you save your money and not by this DVD, the laughs you get are not worth the money spent.
kinda rambling, kinda brilliant.......2007-05-13
Zach Galifianakis is one of those comedians who thrives in loose, intimate atmospheres, and Live at the Purple Onion is an excellent example of his art. I am familiar with his thing, as it were, and if you haven't heard of him, give this DVD a try, or cruise YouTube for some of his (fantastic) clips. Extra features on this concert DVD are highly entertaining, as well. A final aspect of Live at the Purple Onion I found rewarding is the insight to Zach's past, family, and hometown, and how those elements influenced his approach to comedy. Good stuff.
classic zach.......2007-04-10
if you're a fan of zach galifianakis, then you know to expect his absurd one liners. if you haven't seen any live shows of his besides his comedy central special, then you may not be familiar with zach's hilarious habit of abandoning his routine and fully engaging the audience. both of these talents are on display in his first dvd. also are hilarious fake documentary footage of zach's "twin" brother seth. Those interviews and the behind the scenes footage are great, but sometimes can be jarring when inserted into the standup footage. that's why i gave this dvd 4 instead of 5 stars. it was done by the same people who made the comedians of comedy, which was awesome as well but suffered from the same problem. all in all though, the dvd is incredibly funny and definitely worth it if you're a fan of zach's. hopefully we'll get a zach stand-up cd soon also!
Paul Giamatti meets Chris Elliot.......2007-04-06
Enjoyable set from Zach G. A bit self-indulgent and lazy, but hey - he'd be the first to admit to that! Funny pop culture writer. There's also an ongoing segment with his "twin brother" Seth, who seems to be channeling Christopher Guest.
Overall, 3 & 1/2 stars.
