Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Way Over-Rated, and Often VERY Unpleasant!.......2007-06-29

Yes, it is a nice Cinderella story, and Audrey plays a fine role. There is an excellent message about the ingrained Brit Class System circa 1910..And there are some nice costumes, mainly women's hats, at the Horse race..Add to this a few memorable songs..So what is the problem with this ? Mainly, the near- nauseating character of Higgins, an old fashioned snob and misogynist of the ugliest type, who we have to watch sneer and scold for the better part of two hours! Not pretty! True, Pickering is a nice counterpoint, and really a decent old chap, but Higgins is the main character, and to watch and listen to this old goat goes well beyond a pleasant way to spend time! The song and dance numbers are hardly even third rate. Any comparison with a 1940's-50's MGM musical puts this one to shame! No dancing to speak of, and very low production quality..Then again, this was Warner, not known for musicals!..And there is a claustrophic sense here that says , "How can I get away from this miserable phonetics teacher?" It's near impossible..I can think of at least 30 musicals far and away above this, not just MGM, but Fred and Ginger, and so forth..In fact, 3-stars may be too kind for this one, since it is way below the hype!..Also, check out the 1930's PYGMALION with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard, and you can easily see how almost the entire movie (MY FAIR LADY) was completely taken from PYGMALION, including the sets and dialogue..About the only thing new is the songs, which are fun and amusing, but not really in the top tier of great musical tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Is the Creator Responsible for His Creation?.......2007-06-12

I had not watched this marvelous movie for many years when I took the opportunity to watch it again. The movie is a little stiff in places, but that stiffness seemed, to me, to enhance the formality of English high society. Audrey Hepburn belies that stiffness with her free-spirited characterization of Eliza Doolittle. Eliza contrasts nicely with Henry Higgin's mother, played by veteran actor Gladys Cooper ("The Happiest Millionaire," "The Song of Bernadette," and "The List of Adrian Messenger"). Mrs. Higgins is quite proper and perfect in every situation. Henry, played by the incomparable Sir Rex Harrison, is disdainful and aloof. Henry believes he is the remote scientific observer who can categorize and stereotype everyone, and is not affected by his surroundings.

A problem arises when Henry Higgins bets Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White, "Ten Little Indians" (1965) and "In Search of the Castaways") that he could take anyone, such as Eliza Doolittle, and turn them into something like a lady's maid or a shop girl. Colonel Pickering takes Henry up on his bet, volunteering to finance the experiment.

Looking at the next part of this movie with five decades of life, I quickly saw the problem that Henry was getting into. Henry was taking a human life adjusted to a certain set of surroundings, modifying that life so that it no longer fit in, and was then prepared to cast that life adrift once he proved his point. Henry failed to see that he did anything wrong, and therein lies the irony and pathos of this movie. The question a first-time watcher asks is whether Henry will be able to grow up at last and realize that people require compassion and empathy and are more than science experiments.

In addition to a marvelous story, this movie boasts wonderful music and excellent sets. Though some of Audrey Hepburn's singing survived, Marni Nixon sang most of the music attributed to Hepburn. Nixon's singing was phenomenal and her singing voice is close enough to Hepburn's that it sounds as though Hepburn could be singing.

Other singing numbers contained extensive choreography on expansive sets. Two complexly choreographed songs that come to mind are "Get Me to the Church on Time" and the "Ascot Gavotte."

This movie featured an array of sets depicting street scenes and interior scenes. Though the street scenes were excellent, my favorite set in the movie has always been Henry Higgin's incredible library. I would love to have his library in my house, though duplicating that library would be incredibly expensive.

This movie won 20 awards, which includes eight Oscars. Rex Harrison won the Best Actor Oscar and the movie won the Best Picture Oscar, both highly coveted awards. Harrison won many other awards for this film, and "My Fair Lady" became the most awarded movie of 1965.

Of course, awards do not necessarily mean a film is either good or great. However, Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn and Wilfrid Hyde-White have such incredible acting skills and such screen presence that they make this film a joy to watch. I was spell-bound as I watched Audrey Hepburn become Eliza Doolittle and capture the hearts of everyone in the movie. Rex Harrison was incredible as Henry Higgins. This movie was either Harrison's best, or one of his best.

The story is also captivating. Henry Higgins experiments with the life of a human being. What Henry Higgins failed to realize is that once he became involved with his subject, he lost his objectivity and learned compassion. Love can come from compassion. The only thing that surprised me in this viewing of the movie is that I previously had not realized how early in the movie that Eliza Doolittle had come to love Henry Higgins.

"My Fair Lady" is one of the best musicals of all time. The combination of story, acting, singing and sets is amazing. Fans of musicals and love stories will enjoy this movie, even on multiple viewings.

Enjoy!

The DVD does not work in Ireland so it is absolutely useless!! I should have been made aware of this when I was purchasing the product. I would like to be refunded in full for the three DVDs I have purchased: My Fair Lady, Paris when it Sizzles and Breakfast at Tiffanys (purchased at the same time)
Also the packaging costs were not displayed until i had entered my credit card number and were much too expensive.
Overall i am extremely disappointed with my experience and I expect to be compensated for this.

If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This comedic and touching family film follows the adventures of a shy young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who is sent to spend the summer with his eccentric uncles (Michael Caine, Robert Duvall). At first shocked by his uncles' unconventional behavior that includes ordering African lions through the mail, the boy soon becomes enthralled with unraveling the mystery that has followed the uncles for years. Hearing tales of their exotic adventures involving kidnapped princesses, Arabian sheiks and lost treasure, not only brings him closer to his uncles but also teaches him what it means to believe in something... whether it's true or not.

5 out of 5 stars Secondhand Lions Review.......2007-06-27

A thoroughly entertaining story. One that can be viewed over and over. Excellent acting and humorous in many respects. A good family film. I highly recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars humor, pathos, heartwarming all the way........2007-06-14

One of my all-time favorites. Are brothers Hub and Garth liars when they tell stories of adventure and daring to their distant relation, a pre-pubescent boy hurt by a lying mom who abandons him with these two old geezers. And where did they get all their money? The bond that grows between the aging men and the boy gives the boy the boost to manhood he needs, but is his belief in them misplaced? You won't know until the end of the movie. I love the tenderness and toughness of the two wild old characters as they show a wimpy boy what it means to be a real man.

I bought this movie after renting it because I enjoyed it so much! The curmudgeon uncles played by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall were spectacular, interesting, and always with enough believability to their stories that you wondered if they were true. A warm family story for all ages.

Many lesbian movies are long on charm and short on production values; Better Than Chocolate has a solid dose of both and steamy sex scenes to boot. Our heroine Maggie (Karyn Dwyer), a clerk at a lesbian bookstore, meets footloose butch Kim (Christina Cox) and, after Kim's van is towed away, they move in together. Unfortunately for their romantic bliss, Maggie's mother, Lila (Wendy Crewson), and teenage brother move in that very evening thanks to Lila's impending divorce. But what really complicates matters is that Maggie can't bring herself to come out to her mother; even when she tries, Lila steamrolls through the conversation, like she knows what's coming and doesn't want to hear it. Interwoven with this is the struggle of Judy (Peter Outerbridge), a male-to-female transsexual who's in love with the bookstore's owner, Frances (Ann-Marie MacDonald), who's freaking out because customs officers are holding a list of books at the border that they claim are obscene. The overlapping plots are deftly juggled, the personal and political are compellingly interwoven, and, most satisfying of all, the characters have problems that aren't going to be easily resolved. A handful of candy-colored lip-synching musical numbers give the movie some flash and the sex scenes give the movie some heat, but it's the elements of sorrow and ambiguity that really make the joy in Better Than Chocolate something to savor. --Bret Fetzer

This is one of those movies that works for all the wrong reasons--disgusting, lowbrow, base humor that we are all far too sophisticated to find amusing. So, just don't tell anyone you still think it's a riot to watch John Belushi as the brutish Bluto slurp Jell-O or terrorize his less-aggressive fellow students. This crude parody of college life in the '60s spawned many imitations, but none could match the fresh-faced talent or bad taste of this huge box office success. (Remember all those toga parties in the '80s?) The first of the National Lampoon movies, this was originally released as National Lampoon's Animal House. Keep an eye out for a very young Kevin Bacon in his first credited screen appearance. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Double DOUBLE probation!.......2007-07-03

I have a dirty little secret. I hate to admit it, but I will just for you folks: I only recently finally watched ANIMAL HOUSE for the first time. I realize it's been on T.V. a zillion times, but I always deliberately missed it because I have a serious issue with censorship. If I'm going to watch a movie, I want to watch it EXACTLY the way it was supposed to be shown as opposed to some watered-down version that has been edited with a hack-saw.

So, finally, I got around to watching it / buying it. And, it was GREAT! Like a fine wine, it was worth waiting for. This is one of the pioneering movies of the party movie genre. In fact, it could even be considered the grand-daddy of them all!

ANIMAL HOUSE set the standard for everything that the best party films have to offer: raunchy humor, lots of males flunking out of college, an eccentric professor (or two), a sneak-peek @ the frat house milieu, an utter dis-respect for authority and (most importantly for me), lots of gratuitious nudity! If you watch pretty much ANY party movie today, you will readily see the influence of AH. The best ones took the best parts of AH and went off into different directions, while the worst party movies merely tried to rehash aspects of AH in a generic fashion.

There is no question that party movies are not for everyone. If any of the above offends you, you most assuredly will do best to skip over this flick. Nor would I recommend movies like AH to be used as didactic films. Rather, party movies (to me) are kind of a catharsis in that the characters do actions which I would never do myself, but secretly have wanted to.

On another topic, the cast contains quite a few actors who would become big names, such as John Belushi (this is the role he's typically most known for), Kevin Bacon, Donald Sutherland and Karen Allen. For the sake of nostalgia alone this film is worth a look. Just remember: it's OK to visit Animal House every so often - just be sure you don't decide to live there!

5 out of 5 stars Animal House.......2007-07-03

The original "party animal" teen movie (despite its "R" rating), Landis's outrageous feature-length prank has enough gross-out humor, slapstick yucks, and all-night beer chugging to put a drunken smile on anyone's face. Matheson and co-stars James Widdoes, Peter Riegert, and Bruce McGill bring sheer lunacy to their roles as leaders of a riotous frat house for rejects, losers, and academic failures. But it's Belushi's gonzo portrayal of Bluto that remains iconic, and helped make the former "SNL" cast member a bigtime comic star. Irreverent, subversive, and totally inappropriate, "Animal House" depicts the college experience most of us never had, but kind of wish we did. Watch for Kevin Bacon in a small early role as a young pledge.

5 out of 5 stars A modern comedy classic!.......2007-05-22

One of the classic comedies of modern times. Hysterically funny and completely inappropriate for children.

4 out of 5 stars great sophomoric comedy.......2007-05-20

Reminds me of some of my college friends and times only more fun. Good nostalgic comedy.

4 out of 5 stars It would be better if the film wasn't set in 1962!.......2007-04-06

This 1978 comedy Animal House is funny, disgusting, low budget and like most of the teen movies the rules no longer applied because the young people here are WACKY!!!
There are also a lot of naughty words, some alcohol and drug use and many nudity scenes.

When I heard that the film was set in the 60's I thought that it would be a crazy hippie rebel movie with soundtracks of the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Cream, Hendrix and more but I got it WRONG! There isn't a lot of soundtracks here and the main song of the movie is Louie Louie!!
If the film was set in 1962 then the students and the fad had the 50's in mind.

I guess this movie wasn't what I was looking for.

P.S: I heard about another movie of the seventies set in the 60's called American Graffiti but is also set in 1962.

Adios.

Christian (Wes Ramsey of the washboard abs) is a waiter, party boy, and first-class man magnet. Elder Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss of the goofy grin) is a straight-laced Mormon missionary. When he and three elders, including the uptight Ryder (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mysterious Skin), move into Christian's Hollywood apartment complex, it's clear something's got to give. Christian tries to make his new neighbors feel welcome, but they're put off by his flamboyance--the short-shorts, the rainbow flag in his yard, etc. When Christian's trash-talking pals at Lila's restaurant, including the cynical Traci (Amber Benson, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), bet that he can't seduce one of these clean-cut young men, he takes them up on it and sets his sights on cute, soft-spoken Aaron. As a pretense, he asks to learn more about his Church, but where they really connect is over their love of old movies, everything from Psycho to Tommy. When Aaron accuses him of being shallow, however, Christian starts to wonder if the bet wasn't such a good idea--plus he's starting to fall for the guy. Turns out the closeted Aaron feels the same way about him, but when his roommates find out, he's shipped back to Pocatello where he faces excommunication. Written and directed by C. Jay Cox (Sweet Home Alabama), a former Mormon missionary, Latter Days features Mary Kay Place as Aaron's disapproving mother and Jacqueline Bisset as the acerbic, yet supportive Lila. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Huge festival and theatrical hit, Latter Days is the story of 19-year-old Elder Aaron Davis, a sexually confused Mormon missionary who moves into an apartment complex in West Hollywood with a fellow group of missionaries. There he meets a neighbor, Christian, who, on a bet, tries to seduce him. When Christian exposes Davis' secret desire, Davis rejects Christian for being shallow and empty. As each boy's reality is shattered, the two are drawn into a passionate romance that risks destroying their lives. Audiences, young and old and straight and gay, have been moved to tears by this beautiful story of the transformational power of love and family.

really enjoyed this movie..thought it
was right on the money. Well worth the $$.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the Genre.......2007-06-22

I have read many positive reviews of this film and only 1 negative review (from gay.com amazingly enough) so I expected good things and was not disappointed. Of the two leads, Mr. Sandvoss (Aaron) is clearly the better Actor while Mr. Ramsey (Christian) is great eye candy and has the unrequited love thing down ! Mr. Ramsey's character Christian is a bit of a cliche - much like Dean Cain's shallow pretty boy in "The Broken Hearts Club" and the supporting cast here is largely forgettable, save for Ms. Bissett. Mary Kay Place, an excellent Supporting Actress, has an all-too-brief but powerful role. Ultimately all that matters is the love story between Aaron and Christian and it is bittersweet and wonderful. The last ten minutes of the film are true tearjerkers.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Tolerance Movie.......2007-06-12

I really enjoyed Latter Days because I found the love story between Aaron and Christian to be touching, and I also believe that the meaning of tolerance came out in this movie. I almost cried due to the epic scene with Aaron in the bathroom. If you liked Brokeback Mountian's forbidden love story, you will love the forbidden love story of Latter Days.

5 out of 5 stars Best GLBT Movie I've seen in a while.......2007-06-09

2 very sexy actors and it ends right. Great movie, great love scenes, the unrated version is much better than the watered down version they've been playing on LOGO.

Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. Who can forget those diminutive Oompah-Loompah workers who recite rhyming parental warnings ("Oompah-Loompah, doopity do...") whenever some mischievous child has disobeyed Willy Wonka's orders to remain orderly? Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves ... it's really the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman, Wonka gains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wilder makes this movie worth it........2007-06-27

Don't let the star rating fool you. Despite this movie having an absurd plot, largely unlikable characters, particularly Charlie's family, and repetitive singing from the loompas, this is a fantastic movie. But wilder and the boy who plays charlie are the ones who really makes this movie a classic. ill leave the explanation of whats in this movie to the editors and other reviewers.

the reason for the 1 star deduction is because of the transfer quality. some scenes are quite bad. such as the sketchiness of when charlie runs home after finding the golden ticket. since its been ages since i've last seen this movie i have no idea if anything was removed.

Overall, this is a good buy. They're are interviews with cast and directors included on this too which makes even more valuable.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great movie that your entire family will surely enjoy time and time again........2007-06-20

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is an awesome movie. I used to watch this over and over again as a child. My favorite character is Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole) because she was so mean and spoiled. I loved how Veruca always seemed to get her way, it was so funny. This is a great movie that your entire family will surely enjoy time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies of all time!.......2007-06-05

I don't know what it is, but when you see the opening scene of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, you will instantly be hooked.

So what's to like about this movie? Pretty much everything! If you're a kid, you'll love the candy scenes (yum!) and the weird and funny "tour" scenes. If you're an adult, you'll appreciate the "moral of the story" and the little inside jokes here and there.

And what's NOT to like about this movie? Not much. I find myself fast forwarding through the "Cheer up Charlie" song simply because it seems to last forever but that's not enough reason to lower my rating. Also, if you're a parent and are picky about what your kids watch, the end of the movie (where the poor kid gets everything he wants) may or may not be a not so good lesson to teach to your kids.

My verdict: 5/5 stars. I can't see why anyone would NOT like this movie. I can watch it three times a week and still be enthralled each time. This is a must have movie in every household's movie collection!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie!.......2007-05-09

This is a movie for the generations. My two year old niece is as fascinated as I was when I first saw the movie. She and I sing along everytime we watch the movie together. I love this movie for its strong moral content, as well as the world of fantasy it evokes. No big budget movie today can touch it. Get it for a child, and get one for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever!.......2007-04-21

I have loved this movie ever since I can remember watching movies. I was just so fascinated with everything in it. I watch it all the time. If you've never watched it, make sure you do. It will always be at the top of my list.

Amazon.com essential video

Edward Scissorhands achieves the nearly impossible feat of capturing the delicate flavor of a fable or fairy tale in a live-action movie. The story follows a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who was created by an inventor (Vincent Price, in one of his last roles) who died before he could give the poor creature a pair of human hands. Edward lives alone in a ruined Gothic castle that just happens to be perched above a pastel-colored suburb inhabited by breadwinning husbands and frustrated housewives straight out of the 1950s. One day, Peg (Dianne Wiest), the local Avon lady, comes calling. Finding Edward alone, she kindly invites him to come home with her, where she hopes to help him with his pasty complexion and those nasty nicks he's given himself with his razor-sharp fingers. Soon Edward's skill with topiary sculpture and hair design make him popular in the neighborhood--but the mood turns just as swiftly against the outsider when he starts to feel his own desires, particularly for Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Most of director Tim Burton's movies (such as Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman) are visual spectacles with elements of fantasy, but Edward Scissorhands is more tender and personal than the others. Edward's wild black hair is much like Burton's, suggesting that the character represents the director's own feelings of estrangement and co-option. Johnny Depp, making his first successful leap from TV to film, captures Edward's childlike vulnerability even while his physical posture evokes horror icons like the vampire in Nosferatu and the sleepwalker in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Classic horror films, at their heart, feel a deep sympathy for the monsters they portray; simply and affectingly, Edward Scissorhands lays that heart bare. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie and Great Acting........2007-07-05

I had seen this movie when I was a kid and decided to revisit it after watching some of Johnny Depp's newer movies (Pirates of the Carribean, Willy Wonka etc.). Depp's performance in this movie is just as outstanding and intriguing as his other movies. His character is a machine that was turned into a human and his performance is believable. This movie is also a true Tim Burtonesque film. The imagery is quite contrasting with brightly colored homes in the community contrasting the dark and bleak mansion on the hill. This movies message is quite strong and worth showing to children and adults of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp is Beautiful in Leather.......2007-06-08

It would be hard for me to be critical about Johnny Depp, or even Tim Burton for that matter. I like just about all their movies. In this flick, Johnny Depp plays a tormented teen that spent all his childhood living in the haunted house on the hill, with an old dude and scissors for hands. Already he has my deepest sympathies. Falls for the girl next door,Wynona Ryder, but dosent get the girl, because the angry mob scares him off, and eddy with his scissorhands the girl next door, decide for his safety they could never be together. Go figure! As usual society wins. But it was good that it didnt end with a cheesy ending cuz that would ruin it. So definetly a must see, thats if you haven't seen it already. or u have the movie sitting with the other many Johnny Depp movies that u made a shrine out of.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-19

I loved this film. It was really sad, and this film is very touching. It also teaches you that people will always behave differently and ostracise people who are different, and even if they don't, something or someone will always go and ruin it. While the neighbours were generally accepting of him at first and even found him rather useful, the awful, nasty revolting Jim ruined it by taking advantage of him. It was a very sad story, and it had great acting. A movie to be loved by all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Alright for Science Fiction.......2007-04-23

This is an unusual film.

Great for big fans of science fiction.

I didn't get the point of this, and was a little bored.

Mr. Depp does look good in black leather, but then again so did Elvis Presley.....

5 out of 5 stars Lovedrug Matches up with Edward Scissorhands?.......2007-04-14

Hey,

I just wanted to give you the scoop that I was talking to some of the guys from the fairly popular indie rock band Lovedrug and they mentioned that their album is based on the tim burton movie Edward Scissorhands and that their music fits up to the movie perfectly. Here is the kicker though...it matches up best when the cd/ipod is on shuffle. They mentioned that you can even better the experience by turning on repeat so it plays for the whole movie. That's how perfect it is. I think the album is called everything starts where it ends.

I tried it and it did work, weirdly enough :)

Thought it was kind of cool so I wanted to share....

A perfect marriage of novel but incisive writing, acting, and direction, Big is the story of a 12-year-old boy who wishes he were older, and wakes up one morning as a 30-year-old man (Tom Hanks). The script by Gary Ross (Dave) and Anne Spielberg finds some unexpected ways of attacking obvious issues of sex, work, and childhood friendships, and in all of these things the accent is on classy humor and great sensitivity. Hanks is remarkable in the lead, at times hilarious (reacting to caviar just as a 12-year-old would) and at others deeply tender. Penny Marshall became a first-rate filmmaker with this 1988 work. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars BIG IS BIGGER THAN EVER WITH THE EXTENDED CUT!.......2007-07-02

I have seen this film many times and now I have watched the extended edition. This is one of those rare exceptions when a extended edition is welcome! The added scenes are not just garbage that should have never left the cutting room floor, but helpful scenes that answer many question I had in the original cut of the film. This is a worthy purchase because you get both version on this set, plus some interesting extras! The transfer is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars "BIG" is B I G !.......2007-06-27

This is one of the top ten movies of the 1980's to come out that is a must see! This movie is an endearing story about friendship and the wonderful memories of childhood. Tom Hanks of course carries off the character very well and makes you love him! This extended version is great because it gives more details than the original version that were left unanswered. I loved it back then when it first came out and I love it even more now!! Great Flick!

Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Rock To Footloose ........2007-05-23

Hey i just love this film footloose brings me back to those carefree days i had as youth. i just dug the story about an outsider from a big city shaking things up in a small town but for a good reason. not being allowed to dance come on! it's part of our culture so i found that law in the film a little silly and thought it was just made up for the film until i saw the bonus stuff on this disc recently. the film hasn't aged that much other than some of the fashions being what they were in 1984 and they're were artifacts left. but nothing that would take away from the enjoyment of watching the movie, but what i like most about it was the music, the classic tracks that i heard and did'nt realize they were in the film until i viewed it again. the reason why i gave it four stars is the fact that top gun special edition came with the music videos from the film, that would've been nice to see the music videos from this film on here but oh well, can't win e'm all.

This Film Was shot In Utah. Lehi , American Fork and few other places.
The Mill still stands but is surrounded by resturants and gas stations , once there was nothing there but the mill and few houses and school, oh how times have changed.

When I see the Mill it brings back some fond memories, May It always stand.

4 out of 5 stars Footloose fun.......2007-05-07

I loved this movie in highschool. Now my daughters can enjoy it too!! It was fun seeing the actors all grown up.

5 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for Dancing.......2007-03-23

A feel good movie for the whole family. Teaches the youngters that if you want something, you have to go for it and be willing to fight for it. This movie is one I recommend for everyone's library.

Let's hear it for the boy...

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic .......2007-03-19

An American classic dance movie. Also watch the special 2-part feature on the making of the movie. It was forward and backward looking in so many good ways, anticipating the break out of pop music into mainstream culture through MTV as well as telling the story of a real small town in Oklahoma which had banned dancing for 95 years before one senior class petitioned the town fathers for a prom.

Although it contains some clichés, then, the story is still a meaningful one, and the very human performance of John Lithgow as the baptist minister and father of the rebellious Lori keeps the filim from descending into stereotype. Of course, Kevin Bacon in the lead role of "Ren" is just riveting. The dancing, choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, is good but not too good. Although there are clearly some ringers in the film (which makes the extravaganza closing scene just that much more fun), for the most part she worked with the native talents of the actors she had, who were not professional dancers. Just an all-around fun movie with foot-tapping music.

4 out of 5 stars great music and dancing.......2007-02-22

I would give it five stars if the story of the movie wouldn't be a little lame (a little town where there is no music and dancing allowed - hello?)The dancing and the music make up for the story line though. A nice movie to pop into your DVD player once in a while.

Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big, Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two '90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world of Pleasantville, a Leave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop, and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H. Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessive Pleasantville devotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock & roll, free thinking, and soul-changing Technicolor. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town), Pleasantville is a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious color. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloreds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome, and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory. --Mark Englehart

4 out of 5 stars wonderful movie despite the propaganda.......2007-07-04

i love this movie & enjoyed it immensely despite its many failings. yes, it is blatant leftist feminist propaganda & there is a nasty satanic undertone to it that comes out in the eve & the apple scene. sarcasm drips when they use the phrase "family values." they effectively ridicule the tightassed republican repressed redneck stereotype but the mirror leftist stereotype of the angry kinky brainwashed sleazeball is not there in the open. it's almost totally one-sided, although the modern people do benefit from going back to the 50's & there is some affection for the innocence of the beaver cleaver types as compared to the jaded neurotic moderns. that's what keeps this from being a five star movie for me, it's a little too caustic & superior. but having said all that, it's a very funny, beautiful film that does make a valid point--that it's better to express yourself than to be a repressed hypocrite. i think even tightassed republicans should watch this & have the good humor to laugh at themselves if they need to. it's a very imaginative, creative film with some hilarious performances, really delightful & full of the spirit of art.

2 out of 5 stars Things are so much better now.......2007-06-30

All the positive comments from folks on this blatantly propagandistic film reflect their relief that those bad old 1950s (of which they know virtually nothing) are gone and targeted for terminal mockery, since things are so much better now, what with one out of five babies aborted, a majority of children born out of wedlock, and drug abuse and violence the major concerns of high-school-age kids, instead of all the poodle skirts and silliness of Pleasantville.

Wake up and smell the Prozac, lemmings: Technicolor-land is worse than Pleasantville, and no amount of clever revisionism is going to change it.

This film is a mendacious little piece of half-ignorant fantasy, and thus nearly perfect entertainment for most contemporary movie-goers, who can't even find Asia on a map, and had to have the SAT dumbed-down to jumpstart their self-esteem.

2 out of 5 stars "Honey, I'm home!" (The 50s meet the New Millennium).......2007-06-26

Teen twins David and Jennifer (Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon) are very different: Jennifer is quite the wild child while David's passion is watching re-runs of the 50s TV sitcom "Pleasantville." One night, the kids are magically whisked right into Pleasantville - a swell little town where the fire department only rescues cats in trees, books are as blank as the foks' minds, and everything is in black and white. David loves it there, but Jennifer starts changing things when she takes her boyfriend up to Lover's Lane for a lot more than hand-holding. Gradually people start seeing things in color, then it rains real rain, and *gasp* dinner isn't on the table at six o'clock.

I'd seen bits and pieces of "Pleasantville" on TV and liked it, but after watching the entire movie, I have to say it left me confused, angry, and disappointed. The point of the movie - that sexual promiscuity is the key to enlightenment - is a sad comment on our times. Maguire and Witherspoon are perfectly cast and give excellent performances, but the script ridicules wholesomeness and condemns morality. I think it's sad that old-fashioned values are labeled not only corny, but wrong. I did enjoy the photography changing slowly from black and white to color, but I cannot recommend the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected..........2007-05-14

This movie is great! I needed it for my classroom and it was available and mailed to me within a week.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville - One of my favorite films.......2007-04-30

I love this film. It has a sweetness, a wistfulness, about it that is so compelling, yet explores many complex human issues, including individual rights. The writing is fabulous - so when I read that the writer of "Pleasantville" is the same man who wrote "Big", it all made clicked. This movie received so little notice that when I loan it to friends their reply is always the same: why didn't I know about this great movie?
