A member of a small group of intellectuals and artists, performs a series of symbolic ritual suicides--burial by earth, water, and fire--on the first day of each season, and plans to publicly end his life for good in a final ice burial. Inspired by a real-life performance-art suicide (according to the opening commentary), Frozen explores a rarely glimpsed youth subculture of post-Tiananmen Square Beijing, and finds a mood of hopelessness. Wang Xiaoshuai's deliberate direction and unadorned shooting style has won accolades for its simplicity and directness, highlighted in two genuine performance-art pieces: the first a stomach churning document of two men eating a bar of soap, and the second the shivering ice burial. It's an effective approach for those scenes, where self-torture becomes a desperate grasp for sensation in a numbing existence, but elsewhere the anger and frustration of the film dissipates in long, rambling discussions and a meandering pace. Part of that style came from necessity: the guerrilla production was shot in secret and smuggled out of the country. The director finished it in Amsterdam and signed it "Wu Ming" (meaning "no one") out of fear of reprisals from the Chinese government. In the years since its release, Wang Xiaoshuai has come forth as the director, but the alias appropriately remains on the prints. A film that gives voice to a generation of alienated young adults desperate to be heard, it remains banned in China. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Man vs the elements, the machine, the odds, Himself........2007-03-12

The impossible dream, the super human task, the will to succeed are only a few words to describe this documentary. Of all the films of this genre, this one left a major impression in my mind. Only since Hillary climbed Mt. Everest, have I seen the will of man so persevere. The finale is worth the wait, trust me. If this type of film is not your preference, make an exception and watch just this one. I don't think you'll be disappointed!!

4 out of 5 stars I bought it as a gift.......2007-02-15

I think my son, whom I bought it for, will like it.

5 out of 5 stars More than a documentary--an emotional, inspiring adventure.......2006-10-18

Tip: This video is perfect for a home theater system with great speakers. As the narrator says, the radial engines on this plane are the largest ever built. When the team starts firing them up, turn it up loud-loud-LOUD, loud enough to feel the roar in your bones. It still won't be as loud as in real life, but you'll feel like you're standing there with them cheering, watching this frozen bird come back to life after half a century, and you'll understand in your heart exactly why they're taking on this project. You'll feel like a little kid, just like they do, and you'll wish you were there with them.

I use this documentary every time I teach a class on entrepreneurship. Combined with a Smithsonian magazine article on the salvage operation, it's great for talking about planning, leadership, decision-making, group dynamics, friendship, financing, risk, innovation, entrepreneurial motivations, expertise, and so on.

But...the REAL reason I show it to my class is...well, you'll have to watch it and see. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Only reality can be this tragic and cruel..........2006-10-18

NOVA documentaries always seem to capture me, but this one literally left me with my jaw dropped in my lap the first time I saw it on TV. This film focuses on a group of men which attempt to restore a B-29, which crashed and was abandoned in Greenland during a secret mission during W.W.II. Their goal: to completely restore the B-29 on-site, and launch it from the nearby frozen lake bed. The technicalities of what they must accomplish to restore this airplane are mind-boggling. Most NOVA documentaries are very engaging, but besides being a technical chronicle of what these men accomplished in extreme environs, a tragic incident, and finally the jaw-dropping, dumbfounding conclusion, are what set this documentary apart from any other NOVA documentary I have seen. You simply will not want to believe what you are seeing, and I am not exaggerating! You will be on the edge of your seat cheering them on as they start the engines, taxi for takeoff on the frozen lake bed, and then... This is life. This is real ... This is a keeper.

One of the greatest death metal bands in an incredible live performance from Poland - for the first time on DVD! This DVD cannot be missed by a genuine Obituary fan as it is a complete review of the band's music, featuring songs both old and new, all testifying to the musicians' technical perfection, charisma, and excellence. The DVD also includes lots of sensational bonus materials including the "Insane" video, the previously unreleased "On the Floor" video, an interview with Frank Watkins & Trevor Peres, an interview with John & Donald Tardy, 3 documentaries - the making of "Insane", the making of "Frozen in Time" album, and "Backstage in Poland" and more!

5 out of 5 stars Nice piece of work.......2007-06-27

First Obi DVD, a must have for a true fan. Recorded in Poland, august 2006. A special surprise for me: Donald's drum solo live in Bucharest (Romania), a great show that I have witnessed.
"Images on this disc are rotting much slower that they appear".

4 out of 5 stars O'beware.......2007-05-25

Great concert, just awesome performance captured in such high quality. The extras though are a let down. The promo videos from Frozen In Time album (a great come back album) are uninspired basic stand up performance mimics. Then the interviews were BAH! Come on ask some interesting questions, instead we get "How did you guys think after completing 'Slowly We Rot"? Duh! they were stoked! Come on get on a deeper level. Then the generic backstage footage. BORING! Come on guys liven it up, drink from a keg, do something wild. NO! We see footage of the bass player before or after a show changing clothes standing in his underwear looking dumb. NOT what I envision Obituary as or want to see.
For a great concert highly recommended!

    Product Description

For more than 30 years a man by the name of Dick Proenneke lived alone in the Alaskan Bush. His only neighbors were the wolves and the grizzly bears. His only transportation was his canoe and a good set of legs. Through the years, Dick kept written journals of daily life at Twin Lakes but would also document much of his adventure on film with his 16mm Bolex camera. The Frozen North is Dick's own filmed account of his life alone in this "One Man's Wilderness". Certainly Proenneke's story is a dream shared by many but fulfilled by few. Yet through this video we can share with a man who lived his dream.

3 out of 5 stars We laughed and laughed and laughed!.......2005-07-04

It has been a LONG TIME since I've laughed so hard at a movie.
I know, I know. It's not a comedy. Still, it was SOOO funny.
They tried to make a 'serious (yet wholesome) suspense movie' and their effort was pretty good. It looked good enough, but there was so much that simply fell flat. I'll list a few (but only a few :)

-The devastating hailstorm ravages an area for a few minutes, but afterwards, there is no hail on the ground (there also should have been a number of corpses, but...)
-The Dad said "Get inside the house!" And then we said "What house?!?! In the last shot we watched it turn into a burning pile of rubble. What house is she supposed to get into?!?!" (Crazy how that hail would set all these building on fire...)
-A girl is being suspended by a rope, and is feriecy pelted by hailstones. The onlookers keep yelling "Stay still!! Stay still!!" and we yell "What is she hanging there! What is she suppsed to do!?!?"

I would still recommend people to get it. (I'm going to buy it myself.) Just don't expect some real great movie. Unless you want a laugh... :)

3 out of 5 stars Awful but Nice........2003-09-20

What can I say about this movie? I never thought acting and directing can sink to that level before watching Frozen in Fear on cable yesterday! What I saw was more like dollars being burned in front of my eyes..what a waste of money I thought.
My remote was at the ready to make a quick exit into anything, even watching the shopping channel would have been a welcome diversion, had not the lovely Catherine Oxenberg started peeling off her clothes faster than my twitchy fingers managed to change channels. In fact there is a lot of sex scenes and nudity in the film, it somehow compensates for the lame and weak script, acting and directing.
I just felt sorry for Eric Roberts..To be typecast is not necessarily a bad thing for an actor, if anything it is a more secure way to get the job and pay your bills, but he really should rethink his future choices. He is not a bad actor per se, but his frequent portrayal of a baddie/psycho/tortured man can be exhausting to watch after a while. Rod Steiger was in this movie as well..Rod Steiger was in this movie???? Why?
I don't expect of course all films to be masterpieces, and not all directors are Truffaut or Kubrick..there is a market and different tastes out there for many genres and many level of entertainment(like music you have your Beethovens and your Spears), but at least a film should have the minimum: to be watchable.
So if you want a film that has this minimun then avoid Frozen Fear, however if you want to watch the beautiful Catherine Oxenberg doing her bit for 'art' then rent this movie and thank God for the wonders of the remote control.

    4 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Movie!.......2002-07-12

I have to admit, when I rented this movie from my local video store, I did'nt have high hopes. I expected a barley decent film, that would probably be unwatchable. Due to the intriquing premise, however, I gave in and rented it. Well, I must say, I was pleasently surprised, when the movie started getting good. Despite a few plot holes, this movie just goes to show that proves that a big-budget is not requires, to produce a good film.

FROZEN ALIVE is a sci-fi yarn about experiments in cryogenics. The set up is decent, w/ scientists doing their work in the lab while, unbeknownst to them, a drunken / jealous wife gets closer and closer to doing something disastrously stupid. Unfortunately, this movie suffers from it's own long-winded telling of this tale. If it had been about 30 min. shorter, it would have made a great Twilight Zone episode! As it is, it's not a total waste, but seems padded out...

3 out of 5 stars Not much reason to take this one out of the freezer.......2005-11-17

This isn't what I would call a riveting science fiction thriller. Sometimes it seems that the film itself is in suspended animation, as it takes forever to get to the real science fiction part of the whole story - namely, the freezing and unfreezing of a human being.

Dr. Frank Overton (Mark Stevens) and Dr. Helen Wieland (Marianne Koch) are pioneers in the art of cryogenic freezing. They've already managed to put monkeys in suspended animation and bring them back with no ill effects. The natural next step for them is the freezing of a human being - but, as you can imagine, not everyone is thrilled with that proposition, including the guy holding the money strings. Dr. Overton ultimately decides that the experiment must be done before the request is officially denied - and he offers up himself as the guinea pig. The backdrop to all of this is a sort of love triangle involving Helen, Frank, and Joan, Frank's complete lush of a wife. Actually, let's make it a square because Joan has something going on with another guy, too. Now, Frank and Helen are just colleagues (although Helen is a little sweet on the guy), but Joan is jealous. She gets drunk, gets her hands on a gun, and - well, she dies. It looks like murder, so the police are anxious to talk to her husband - but by then he's snoozing at about 80 degrees below freezing. There's a nice little moral dilemma for Helen at the very end, which makes the ending a little more interesting than I expected. Notice I said interesting, not exciting or particularly entertaining.

The main problem with this science fiction film is the fact that it really doesn't look or feel like a science fiction film until the very end. There's just way too much of Joan's philandering and drunken antics and not enough of machines that go ping.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious -rebellion without cause........2003-07-26

This film aspires to be categorized as an art /intellectual film by putting so many static shots of an artist suffering from perpetual hemmoroids (At least, his facial expressions look like he has them ),talking about death and crude amateurish filming style. I'm shocked to discover that Rotterdam Film Festival's Hubert Bals fund subsidized a pretentious film like this. The Chinese film scene is booming and fortunately this film will never be part of it.

          3 out of 5 stars frozen.......2001-07-08

One almost feels morally compelled to give a high rating to a film like this because of what it stands for and the obvious difficulties involved in producing such a work. But I can't.

Frozen, as previous reviews have explained, is essentially about a young performance artist who to raise his apparent spiritual malnourishment or general weariness with life to an art form decides to take his own life in protest against....well, we're not sure exactly, and that's the problem with the film. His individual struggles are never gone into in great detail. Instead we get him doing black and white Munch-like sketches of hollow cheeked post-apocalyptic waifs and then sitting in his room for three days without eating. His brother in law tries to cash in on his known death wish by selling his work (an impulse that needs no explanation).

Few films have the opportunity that Frozen had to fire big shots at an obviously worthy target and win immediate sympathy for its message. But instead, we are left with the impression that the Chinese underground has succumbed to a general nihilism. Apart from ethnicity and language, this could be Seattle youth dropping manhole covers on puppies to protest the WTO. Some scenes, notably those with the character of Bold Head, do carry enough intensity to be engrossing in and of themselves, i.e. his methodical consumption of a bar of soap, and his opening of a bottle with his teeth, which was more profoundly philosophical than any such act I've seen on film or in person. His character was extremely compelling.

I suppose some might argue that the prevailing sense of despair and hopelessness that runs through the film is an indictment of the Communist system. Perhaps so. But normally one would expect that a rallying cry would not be so cognisant of its own futility. This film should take a lesson from the writings of authors like Solzhenitsyn, who faced totalitarianism with intelligence and humor, and emerged stronger, with a courageous appreciation for humanity and the precious gift of life.

          2 out of 5 stars Frozen, indeed!.......2001-06-26

I have to rein in my displeasure not to give a one star. The film is pretentious, self-righteous and boring. The only saving grace is it provides a rare peek into Chinese couter-culture. The folks in Beijing who made this film apparently believe that a life on the margin and death at large, nothing more, are enough to maintain the audience's interest for 95 minutes. No intelligent conversations, no good actings, and no coherent plot are required. Wrong. I also disagree with some critics who see this film as a condemnation of communist repression in China. First, there is no evidence that the youth's defiance is against anything in particular. In order to make a political point, the writer/director will need to offer a more coherent narrative, no matter how cloaked it has to be. Secondly, there are misfits in every society. If one compare the merits of political systems based on the strength of counter-culture, we'll have to draw the necessary conclusion that the totalitarian socialism of China is superior to the libertarian democracy of US. After all, few, if any, see "Traffic" as a protest against democratic society, right?

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Deep and Engaging ! ! !.......2001-02-17

Overall this film recounts the story of a young artist as he plans suicide by means of burial in ice on the first day of summer in a public square as a final act of performance art.

The zen-like feel of this film, with its mixture of "non-chalantness", nihlism makes you feel more like you're reading a novel by Osamu Dazai (No Longer Human, The Setting Sun) or Yukio Mishima (Temple of the Golden Pavillion) than watching an underground movie smuggled from China... the themes and the unfolding of the story are the same.

I say non-chalantness because despite the profound nature of the story, the director presents the unfolding events very calmly and casually... there's is nothing "artsy", boring or overdramatic about the film. In many ways its typical Asian stoicism, but amplified under the magnet of the unfolding of events in the movie. In fact, by the time the reality settles in, the film pulls a number of brilliant orchestrated tricks on the viewer in which many ways the viewer goes from the the judge to the judged - - and despite the simplicity of the story, you found yourself trapped in a complex web and part of the art.

Sadly, we may never know who really directly this film and few people in his own country will get to see it. We can only hope however, that this brilliant director who called himself "no one" will continue to make films and direct ! ! !

Not for everyone, of course... but nevertheless, a brilliant story... a brilliant film !
