Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
One of Alfred Hitchcock's classics, this romantic thriller features a cast to kill for: Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, and Claude Rains. Bergman plays the daughter of a disgraced father who is recruited by American agents to infiltrate a post-World War II spy ring in Brazil. Her control agent is Grant, who treats her with disdain while developing a deep romantic bond with her. Her assignment: to marry the suspected head of the ring (Rains) and get the goods on everyone involved. Danger, deceit, betrayal--and, yes, romance--all come together in a nearly perfect blend as the film builds to a terrific (and surprising) climax. Grant and Bergman rarely have been better. --Marshall Fine

The cult pin-up idol Bettie Page gets the full-fledged biopic treatment in The Notorious Bettie Page, a movie that somehow seems as tame and innocent as the naughty photographs Bettie made in the 1950s. After a few scenes of Bettie growing up, the film quickly leads us to her more-or-less glory years, when she posed for countless peekaboo photos and some nudie films. These would make her an underground star for decades--long after she gave up modeling for religion, in fact. Gretchen Mol, a premature starlet in a redemptive role, does nicely at suggesting Bettie's too-trusting nature, maintaining her equipoise in a sleazy world. Her nude scenes are as liberated and no-sweat as those old nudist films always wanted people to believe. Director Mary Harron plays most of the film in the black-and-white that Bettie thrived in, which seems fitting enough (although the Kodachrome-bright color interludes are welcome). There's an air of "Ed Wood" about the project, and Harron maintains a similarly jovial tone, but the film does have a tendency to fall into the and-then-this-happened metronome rhythm of film biography. Even a promising venture into the Senate hearings on pornography is a minor joke. Jared Harris and Lili Taylor, veterans of Harron's "I Shot Andy Warhol," play colorful characters out of the grindhouse world, but few supporting players get a chance to make an impression. The main draw is Mol's commitment to the role and the film's goofy re-creation of a most peculiar subculture at an unlikely time. --Robert Horton

Description

In an incandescent performance, Gretchen Mol (The Shape of Things) stars as Bettie Page, who grew up in a conservative religious family in Tennessee and became a photo model sensation in 1950s New York. Bettie?s legendary pin-up photos made her the target of a Senate investigation into pornography, and transformed her into an erotic icon who continues to enthrall fans to this day. Complemented by an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors, such as David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) and Lili Taylor (High Fidelity), the film brings to vivid life Bettie?s fascinating world.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Page on the Screen .......2007-07-04

Gretchen Mol does an excellent of portraying Bettie Page and the fact that that movie is shot in Black and White doesn't hurt either except for the Florida scenes that are in Technicolor , which is a nice surprise. This movie reminds you of Good Night and Good Luck in that plot centers around a smut trial. It shows how far the feminist movement has evolved to include women similar to Betty Page that might be in the forfront of the adult industry. This an excellent voice for those women and men that understand that sexuallity is natural thing to cherrish and explore.

4 out of 5 stars Sexual harassment is despicable .......2007-07-03

Only a movie based in the 1950s can depict sexual harassment and the damage it does to women. In films set in the present day, women at least American women are depicted as enjoying, inviting and participating in the behavior that qualifies as sexual harassment.

I can see how Bettie didn't see anything sordid in fetish footwear. If one is not interested in the fetish, the shoes just look like shoes.

Gretchen Mol did a good job and even managed to appear without clothes in a natural way without being illicit.

2 out of 5 stars Gory Days.......2007-06-01

On the 26th of September 1983 a short dumpy 60 year old woman stood trial for the attempted murder of Leonie Haddad, a lady whose husband had recently died and had agreed to take in a lodger who came via a housing authority for the elderly. Haddad was not made aware that her new lodger had, in fact, come fresh from The Patton State Mental Hospital where she had been incarcerated for an inexplicable knife attack on a married couple three years previously. Haddad soon realised that something was `rotten in Denmark' when the woman began to lock herself in the bathroom with a tape recorder reciting prophesies about' seven Gods'. Haddad's fears were confirmed one night when she awoke to find her lodger sitting astride her chest holding a bread knife announcing that "God has inspired me to kill you". Haddad managed to knock her assailant out with a telephone but not before she had lost a finger and suffered deep lacerations to her face and chest. It was a miracle she survived. The lodger was judged to be innocent by reason of insanity but sent, kicking and screaming, back to the laughing academy.

Ten years later she was released and found that she was now a celebrity; but not for the brutal attacks on her innocent victims, but for her incarnation of 25 years earlier when she was known as the `Queen of the Curve's, the `Tennessee Tease' and `Miss Pin Up Girl of the World' - the Notorious Bettie Page.

Director Mary Harron, mainly known for `American Psycho' takes us back to the glory days of a legendary cheesecake and bondage model (played solidly enough by Gretchen Mol) who inadvertently wrote the blue print for fetish iconography and whose influence can be detected in everything from comic books to catwalks. T.N.B.P is day-glo fun ride through an evocative depiction of the 1950's where Page, with the familial help of good intentioned boyfriends and photographers, becomes the number one star of pocket sized men's glossies with titles like Wink, Tab and Parade. Her real dream of movie stardom evades her and a brush with the authorities over obscenity charges in 1957 is the inciting incident which leads her to retire from modelling and give herself to God. The overall style of the film is light and frothy and only darkens momentarily with an allusion to her father's incestuous attentions and a sexual assault which inexplicably appears to have no discernable effect on her. Mol plays Page as she seems in her photographs, happy, carefree and fun - even the bondage shots betray little more than a good humoured incomprehensibility. The film concludes on the upbeat with Page cheerfully handing out bibles in a park with no indication of the real life unhappy marriages, personal tragedy and decent into murderous insanity which lay before her; avoiding what I think is the essential core of Page's story - rebirth and resurrection.

Having emerged from a decade of incarceration Page found that her cult had been in the ascendance since the mid 1980's and that she had become a huge underground icon, during which, many were asking "whatever happened to Bettie Page". Her `mysterious' disappearance fed the fires of any number of conspiracy theories only adding to the allure of her legend. When the world's media finally caught up with her she gave no hint of her darker past and she was soon giving interviews for magazines, T.V and being photographed at Playboy parties with the likes of Pamela Anderson and the equally tragic Anna Nicole Smith.

She found that she was now more famous than she ever was in her `glory years' but in the glare of this `resurrection' it was only a matter of time before the full story would come to light.

The only notorious thing about The Notorious Bettie Page is they left out the part when she became truly notorious.

4 out of 5 stars Nice film about the pin-up star of the universe .......2007-05-28

This was a good look back at the life and times of one of the most famous, and still best known pin-up girl in history betty paige. The acting was superb and really brought across Betties sunny disposition and the innoscence which was taken from her many years before. They do gloss over her past, but there is enough there to know where she is coming from, and if they would have brought out more of her inner pain, it would have taken away from the impact of how resilliant she was. Mrs. Mol who played Bettie is an almost spot on clone of betty, and hats off to her. It's amazin how tame this stuff looks now, but how much controversy it was then. A look back at a much simpler times. This is movie is worth watching. Bettie is not as "Notorious" as you think.

4 out of 5 stars Good film...but..........2007-05-01

you can't tell me Bettie Page didn't realize what types of pictures she was in. Especially at one point when she asks her sister if their mother saw her nude pics. If I take this as a ficticious film, I find it highly enjoyable...but when I think about what I am being asked to believe....I have a sour taste in my mouth. I don't buy this as a biopic...but I do buy it as a good piece of film making and interesting ficticious story. The story is well written, but flawed. It isn't made clear if the two guys Bettie is with at different times are more than friends to her. The back story of the photographers could have been fleshed out more. And suddenely, when Bettie is out with one of the male friends, everyone seems to recognise her, even though she had been making the pictures for awhile. No one knew her until that night?

Madame Anna Sebastian (as Madame Konstantin); Reinhold Schünzel .... Professor; Wilhelm Renzler (as Reinhold Schunzel); Moroni Olsen .... Walter Beardsley. The following review sums up the movie well:Post-War Espionage and Romance in Rio, September 21, 2005 Reviewer: Paul Kellogg (New York, NY)Elegant Cary Grant and beautiful Ingrid Bergman play the leads. Grant is Devlin, an American intelligence agent; Bergman acts the part of Alicia Huberman, daughter of a convicted Nazi spy, and party girl. The American government has an assignment for Miss Huberman in Rio; Devlin delivers the proposal. She is to infiltrate a group of Nazi scientists working on atomic energy. She accepts. Though the leads are romantically attracted, Grant's Devlin tries to maintain a cool distance, yet simultaneously manages to criticize a colleague's wife when he says that Bergman's character is "not a lady." Bergman's Huberman gains entry to the Nazi circle, and then offers to marry the man who's running the operation. That's Alex Sebastian - played by Claude Rains. He's totally smitten with Bergman, but he's also a mama's boy. Mama runs his home, and also finds time to help him when he discovers he's "married to an American agent." These Nazis are a nasty lot. Suspenseful finale.

5 out of 5 stars A great film, great cast at their prime.......2007-07-02

This is truly one of the greatest Hitchcock films. Cary Grant is at his all-time best as is Ingrid Bergman and their chemistry sizzles. (The famous kiss scene got around time limits set by censors of the period by--barely-- breaking up the actual liplock from time to time as they work their way to the door.) No wonder Hollywoood paired them again in their later years, but "Indiscreet" couldn't touch the magic of "Notorious." I've watched and re-watched this one more than I can count. The plot is interesting, characters complex, the setting intriguing, and-of course-the camera angles are superb.

5 out of 5 stars Bergman at her best.......2007-03-18

Although not one of her nominated films, this one has everything: Hitchcock, Grant, Raines, intrigue, sacrifice, and a deeply complicated love story. This film has stood the test of time better than some of her others (Gaslight for example) and is well-paced with strong dialog and characterizations. For anyone who wonders why Miss Bergman remains in the all-time top five 25 years after her death, and why Cary Grant thought she should get an award every year whether she made a picture or not, this is the film to see. The DVD is well made and appears to be a good transfer.

I'm the One That I Want
This concert film becomes gripping, moving, and triumphantly funny when Margaret Cho stops with the "fag-hag" jokes and gets real in recounting her ill-fated sitcom and its devastating effects on her mental and physical well-being. In the spirit of Richard Pryor talking about his infamous freebasing accident in Live on the Sunset Strip and Julia Sweeney discussing caring for her cancer-stricken brother in God Said, "HA!", Cho's account of her ill-conceived 1994 ABC sitcom All American Girl is victorious, a "you go, girl" call to empowerment. Her happiness at finding mainstream acceptance was short-lived when the network expressed concerns about her weight. A desperately insecure Cho proceeded to lose 30 pounds in a month and wound up in the hospital with kidney failure. Even more humiliating was the special consultant hired to instruct her how to appear "more Asian." Cho recalls receiving a phone call after the show's premiere from an enraged Quentin Tarantino, her then-boyfriend, who screamed at her, "They took your voice!" The capper was when her show was cancelled to make room for The Drew Carey Show ("Because he's so thin," Cho asides). Drink, drugs, and promiscuous sex followed, until Cho gave herself a wake-up call. "I'm not going to die because I failed as someone else," she proclaims. "I'm going to succeed as myself." This is the one Cho's legion of devoted fans want. More sensitive viewers are advised to fast-forward through the raunchier bits.

Notorious C.H.O.
Margaret Cho is an NC-17 woman in a PG-13 world. Very, very little can be quoted from this concert film, as can be expected from a woman who, in the film's empowering conclusion, sounds the rallying cry to live "without restraint." Leave it to Cho to reference September 11 with a joke that is at once profane and respectful. Like Richard Pryor, the Korean-American outlaw comedian has found her niche with concert films that allow her the freedom to be her "actual self." She riffs unabashedly about relationships gone sour and relates her experiences as a sexual Captain Kirk, boldly going where she has never gone before. Notorious, yes, but not as accessible for the uninitiated as her last concert film, I'm the One That I Want, which recounted the rise and fall of her ill-fated sitcom. The faithful, though, won't pass up the chance for a private audience with the diva of the disenfranchised.

Revolution
Margaret Cho does not suffer well the by-now-clichéd expression, "Don't go there." As Cho remarks near the end of her characteristically passionate one-woman show, "I live there. I bought a house there." "There" for Margaret Cho is graphic descriptions of sexual acts, gay and straight, and bodily functions, impersonating a Bangkok sex-show barker, and other matters addressed in her singular frank and explicit style. Two hysterical rants that can be printed here involve being served an Asian Chicken Salad and all the reasons she will never be cast in a period film. Revolution is more fitfully paced than her previous concert films, but she saves the best, and her most righteous anger, for last, when she addresses negative body image, racism, and homophobia. Here, she drops the attitude and gets real. She may be preaching to the converted (a Cho audience is nothing but idolatry), but it is a powerful sermon. Viva Cho! --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Cho Shines.......2007-05-19

Cho takes us along on a hysterical roller coaster ride of her life and times. At times brassy, other times vulnerable, she courageously shows us her humor and her vices; her failures as well as her triumphs. Her monologues sometimes drag, but she keeps us hanging on through it all.

5 out of 5 stars Margaret Cho Collection (I'm the One That I Want / Notorious C.H.O. / Revolution) .......2006-07-18

very funny and worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars politics aside.......2005-11-06

I love Margaret Cho, but I have to admit that her new positioning is better and more creative than her previous. In her newest show, ASSASSIN (not part of this collection), she is far more political, which for me, is more interesting and frankly, funnier. It's worth, of course, owning all of CHO's work. She is now part of the legendary group of comics that deserve to be heard by all. She has taken the torch from such legengs as Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, and Cho will likely play a role in protecting us from the 'right'.

4 out of 5 stars 2 Outa 3 Ain't Bad.......2005-07-02

In the immortal words of that other big-boned superstar: 2 outa 3 aint bad.

You're The One That I Want and Notorious C.H.O. are quite simply the funniest stand up routenes I've ever witnessed. I can watch them over and over again. They are not only laugh out loud funny, they are inspirational. I wanted to replace my video copies with DVDs and the boxed set seemed like a great deal. And I guess it is if you think of Revolution as a bonus DVD of out takes. Some gems to be found in there but overall it just pales by comparison. I really hope the next is a return to form.

4 out of 5 stars Hello...my name is Gwen and I'm here to (well, you know!).......2004-12-22

Let me just start off by saying that Margaret Cho is the ultimate faghag. She is hilarious, and one of the best comedians out there right now. I just got this trilogy pack for my birthday this month, and I immediately tore it open and watched "I'm the one that I want" right then and there. That is her best of the threesome. The 2nd disc, "Notorious CHO" is wickidly funny, but not as so as the the previous disc. The last one,"Revolution", which I saw for the first time last night was funny, yet not as much as the former 2. Actually, I was quite dissapointed by Revolution to be honest. I did laugh more than a few times, but I could always control myself (ie, no tears, uncotrollable fits of laughter, knee slaps, breathing issues). She seemed like she just wasn't into it. Maybe she was sick or something. Her appearance is a little different, I'm thinking plastic surgery on her lips and eyes?? She has noticeably lost weight as well. Her voice was different too, it just didn't seem like the same Margaret that I fell for in the 1st disc. In summary, I don't know how often I'll watch "Revolution", but the other 2 will definitely get plenty of wear.

So what do you do if your hit TV show went off the air in 2000, your last studio film was Scary Movie 2, and you've become tabloid fodder and a sure-fire pop culture punchline? If you're plucky Tori Spelling, you go the Fat Actress route and co-create and bravely star in a TV series that takes a self-deprecating look at your life. In an interview with Tori included amongst the ample bonus features, she reveals this series was born out of "years of people laughing at me." Making lemonade out of her lemon of a career, she seems to have taken Robin Williams' maxim to heart: "Joke 'em if they can't take a (blank)." While this is decidedly a fictionalized portrayal, there is, with a bow towards Stephen Colbert, a playful "truthiness" to So NoTORious that will appeal to her fans and even her detractors. There are, at her expense, plastic surgery jokes, eating disorder jokes, and, hitting way close to home, nepotism jokes, as when Tori insists to uber-producer father, Aaron (cleverly heard, but not seen, a la Charlie in Charlie's Angels) that she thinks it best if she gets her own acting jobs, adding, "Unless, of course, you want to buy me a studio... No, daddy, don't do it. I was just kidding."

Through miserable dates, disastrous parties, and career setbacks, So NoTORIous is nearly as cringe-worthy as Curb Your Enthusiasm, although unlike the irascible Larry David, our heart goes out to the hapless Tori, game as she is to somehow right the ship of public perception of her as a "spoiled Beverly Hills princess who's had everything handed to her." "I'm trying to keep a low profile," she complains at one point, and accordingly, the series does not feature many star cameos or appearances by her Beverly Hills 90210 costars. Farrah Fawcett does a nifty turn as herself in the episode "Plucky," and Whoopi Goldberg appears as a psychic in "Cursed" ("You are a wretched, miserable soul," she divines). Making a welcome return to the small screen is Loni Anderson (WKRP in Cincinnati) as Tori's neglectful and self-absorbed mother (which certainly couldn't have helped the well-publicized real-life rift between Tori and her mater). Who knows where Tori's career goes from here? Based on So NoTORIous, there could be a Suddenly Susan in her future! --Donald Liebenson

Description

Forget everything you've ever heard about Tori Spelling. OK, maybe not everything. It's true, her dad is the most successful TV producer of all time and she did spend a decade playing the virginal Donna Martin on his hit show "Beverly Hills 90210." But now that Tori has left that zip code and her parents' mansion behind, she wants the same things we all do: friendship, respect, and love. Used to tabloid scrutiny, Tori navigates life with a self-deprecating sense of humor and the support of a loyal crew of friends she's know since high school, along with her devoted manager, her beloved nanny, and her ever scrutinizing mother Kiki, the ultimate Beverly Hills housewife.

I loved this show!
It is such a shame it was cancelled.
The show portrays toris life over-dramatized.
Her friends are hilarious and make the show unforgetable.
My favorite episode is the one with the massuse who spreads rumors throughout the friends to try to get one of the friends' tickets...
Or the many episodes which poke fun of Candy (Toris' mother).
Great Show! It is such a shame it was cancelled.
I give this show (and thusly DVD) 5 stars!

So glad this became an option for us to get on DVD. I loved the show when it was on the air and was mad when all of a sudden, it was just gone. I doubt her new reality show will top this one, although I will give it a chance. So Notorious is great and my husband and I will be able to laugh at each episode over and over again now. Thanks to Tori Spelling for making this show, it was, and still IS awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great documentary on the history of MC battles.......2006-05-04

Beef is a documentary which chronicles the hiphop battle from it's earliest days to the industry driven beef that you generally see these days. Several significant battles in the history of hiphop are included starting from the very earliest, Kool Moe Dee v Busy Bee, the most serious, Pac v Biggie up until recent battles such as 50 Cent v Ja Rule. What is great about this dvd is that it clearly shows how battles have changed over time becoming increasingly violent, obviously culminating in the deaths of Pac & Biggie. It is also very informative for anyone not up on their hiphop history, instead of going with what is popular now it sets out in great detail key battles between KRS-One and MC Shan, various LL Cool J Battles and also the break up of NWA and everything that followed. You also get to hear several of the greatest diss tracks ever including my personal favourite Cube's No Vaseline.

Basically Beef covers the most significant battles ever in hiphop, if you even have a slight interest in hiphop you should pick this up. Most of the battles have interviews from both sides, giving a balanced account of the beef, and several other industry heavyweights are interviewed on the documentary. It doesn't spend the whole documentary on Pac & Big or the supposed West/East Coast beef, which is probably a good thing as this is well documented already. What beef does well is show in time how the battle has changed and for thst purpose it is an excellent dvd. There are also some decent extras, best of all being the golf club incident with Nate Dogg & Dresta out of Eazy's crew. The only criticism I had was it spent too much time on the Tru-Life v Mobb Deep beef, as most people won't have heard of Tru-Life I just didn't see how it was that relevant to the rest of the dvd. It was interesting to see that Tru-Life did regret the situation a couple of years later though, so he definetley changed from what he was saying earlier. Anyway as I said before this is essential for anyone with any interest in hiphop, pick it up now if you haven't already.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-03-05

I'm doing a term paper on the history of hip-hop founders and I was ecstatic when I saw the advertisement for "Freshest Kids" and bought it immediately. But anyway, THIS "Beef" movie was so interesting. Some of the beefs I already knew about, but this movie takes a collection of artists that I was too young to really get into at the time: MC Shan, KRS One, and Busy Bee. I got to see a different side of artists that I wasn't familiar with and learn about their rhyme skills and what made them tick. I knew quite a bit about Kool Moe Dee though and I will be using his book "50 Greatest Emcees: There's a God on the Mic" in my paper. This movie is a great reference for understanding how hip-hop music has changed throughout the years, in addition to the beef between artists. From the party hip-hop-and-you-don't-stop anthems to intellectual arguments to gangsta nonsense (yeah, I said it: nonsense!) to Eastcoast rhymes, etc. I love to follow the history of such a beautiful music...and I think the beef I enjoyed the most was about Common and Ice Cube 'cause I had no idea Common could spit so much MORE intelligently (even getting gutter) than he already does.

5 out of 5 stars The best one.......2005-12-02

This is the best beef dvd out of all three of them. You get to the early battles like busy bee vs. kool mo dee, nwa vs ice cube, eazy e vs dr.dre, to today biggest battles like jay-z vs. nas and 50 cent vs murder inc. I do wish that they did have other big battles on here like eminem vs. benzino or mobb deep vs jay-z. But still this dvd is for any die hard hip hop fan. You won't be dissapointed when you buy this. You get interviews from rappers themselves as they tell you their side of the story.

4 out of 5 stars "Beef" Review.......2005-11-28

Hip-hop's most infamous feuds (on and off wax) are explored in great detail in this entertaining documentary. Such battles as Tupac vs. Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre vs. Eazy-E, Nas vs. Jay-Z, 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule, and Westside Connection vs. Common are chronicled. There's a lot of interesting information on here including an in-depth investigation of the infamous Hit Factory incident involving 50 and Murder Inc. Tru Life reflects on some poor choices he made involving his feud with Mobb Deep (complete with a rather intriguing robbery story). You'll also get to see the infamous golf club incident involving Nate Dogg and Gangsta Dre'sta (of Ruthless Records). If you're even the mildest hip-hop fan, "Beef" is a very entertaining documentary.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Truly Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-23

Description

In Notorious, a brilliant allegeory of love and betrayal, Hitchcock fuses two of his favorite elements: suspense and romance. A beautiful woman with a tainted past (Ingrid Bergman) is enlisted by American agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on a ring of Nazis in post-war Rio. Her espionage work becomes life-threatening after she marries the most debonair of the Nazi ring, Alex (Claude Rains). Only Devlin can rescue her, but to do so he must face his role in her desperate situation and acknowledge that he's loved her all along. Stunning performances, Ben Hecht's excellent script, and Hitchcock's direction at its best make Notorious a perfect film.

2 out of 5 stars Suspense in Brazil.......2007-06-28

The films starts in a Federal courtroom. A man was convicted for treason and sentenced to 20 years. His daughter leaves court and is followed by an undercover operative. Later she goes driving until her guest takes over, and we learn something about Mr. Stewart Devlin. He wants Alicia Huberman to work in Rio gathering information from Alex Sebastian's group for a US agency. They arrange to meet at a riding academy. Soon Sebastian wants to marry Alicia; her control agrees to place her closer to Alex and his group. Then Alicia steals the key to the locked wine cellar so Devlin can investigate this locked room.

There is a formal party that night. Devlin goes into the wine cellar to investigate, and discovers a strange bottle of wine. Devlin and Alicia are noticed, but concoct an excuse. Later Alex returns to wine cellar and finds a clue. He now realizes how he was duped. His dear Mom decides it would be best if Alicia were to go away. Then Devlin goes to visit the Sebastian's. [You know there will be a happy ending.]

This seems to be a plodding drama compared to many of Hitchcock's earlier and later films. Scenes seem to be copied from earlier films. It does show how intelligence agencies work. Only a devoted fan of Hitchcock would watch this.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Bergman performance.......2007-06-19

Bergman alone is reason to love this movie. It's often been said that playing drunk is one of the hardest things for an actor. She convincingly plays half in the bag a majority of her screen time, reminding me of real drunks I've known in my life. She even nails the dry periods. Plus, y'know, it's like a good movie and stuff, too.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Hitch's Classic Period.......2007-02-21

This is the last of the 30's-mid 40's Hitchcock period. He was building towards Notorious. The mistaken man motif, the McGuffin, the warring lovers, and the lurking evil, usually German spies, all were in Hitch's vocabulary as he films his first masterpiece.

I find Grant and Bergman an interesting pairing. She is so soft and well mannered even as she plays the angry party girl with a father complex. I can't think of any modern leading lady that could pull that off without a hard edge. Grant is Grant and that's what Hitchcock wanted, the strong, steely man with the handsome face. So throw the woman into the castle of the evil witch. Then marry her to the witch's son to mine the secrets of madmen. The evil German's are making a bomb with the uranium hidden in wine bottles downstairs. Then there's the matter of the key to the wine cellar or is it the key to Alicia's jewels? Grant and Claude Raines are competing from different perspectives. There's more Freudian undertow than a couch visit with the doctor himself.

Yes, all the great Hitchcockian film shots are visible. The she said - he said cutbacks, the side profile views, the crane shot from the balcony as the social set walks on a checkered floor as though they were pawns on a chessboard, and the love scenes on top of scenic heights, mountains and balconies overlooking the ocean.

Really, Grant and Bergman cannot find each other until he can mature, trust, and love. She must sacrifice her life if need be in a noble cause to resurect her self-respect. A bit dramatic, hey, but it works cinematically as almost no other film could.

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal.......2006-10-21

This movie is truly a masterpiece. Watch for yourselves, I guarantee this won't dissapoint.

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock, Grant, Bergman & Rains...perfection.......2006-08-28

This is quite simply one of the best suspense films I have ever seen.
Hithcock is obiviously the master at this, but I think this film is near perfect, bringing everything that Hitchcock is great at together in a tight, tense atmosphere.
Personally, I believe Cary Grant was never as captivating then when he revealed that dark, insecure yet sauve side of himself in Hitchcock films (Suspicion is another great example of this). Grant's performance of Devlin is wonderful. Devlin refuses to let himself fall in love with a woman who he must convince himself is a partier, a drinker, and definately not a lady. In forcing himself to believe this, he manages to push Alicia further and further into danger.
Ingrid Bergman is nothing short of stunning as Alicia, definately a perfect performance. Alicia sense of guilt over her father's war crimes and her guilt over being the daughter of such a man, lead her first to drink and then, through Devlin, to become an American agent. Throughout the film she tries to redeem herself in her own eyes, that of the country she loves, and in the eyes of Devlin. She sacrifices herself, stepping right into a deadly affair with Sebastian, all the time hoping Devlin will admit his true feelings.
Claude Rains is excellent as Sebastian; who is so consumed by his feelings for Alicia, that he ignores the dangers of the men he is working with and the dire and jealous warnings of his mother.
The dialog in this film is beyond compare. It is sparse, dark and biting, like the film itself to thicken the cloud of suspense wrapping around the characters and the audience. Hitchock takes Grant's unique inflection and beat that helps him to literally be a "smooth, fast, charmer" and gives his words a darker tone. It sends shivers down the spine to hear Devlin speak.
This film is stunning. Hitchcock's best and one of my all-time favorites!

--Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Her Parents Must Be So Proud.......2006-11-26

Even before the release of NOTORIOUS C.H.O., Margaret Cho was a force to be reckoned with. And here in this highly recommended, 90-minute DVD, she delivers all the fun, shock and good-natured madness you'd expect from one of the bad girls of American comedy.

From the moment she said goodbye to staring in her own sitcom, Cho's quirky brand of humor has wreaked havoc in the minds of everyone who has ever heard her speak. A one-woman block party gone awry, Cho is hilarious, sweet, raunchy, insightful and charming all at the same time.

Though I must warn you that if you are easily offended or squeamish, this may not be the DVD for you, I also have to say that I am definitely squeamish -- and I still loved NOTORIOUS C.H.O. because it's funny, shocking and a strange love letter of sorts to her parents, who are interviewed at the beginning of the film.

I positively loved the chance to meet Cho's mother, who refers to herself as `Mommy.' Eccentric, protective, blunt and suspicious, Mommy is a proper looking Korean-born woman whose comments and observations will shock anyone. After hearing about her so often in Cho's earlier performances, it was great to see the innocent-looking face of one of comedy's legendary characters.

1 out of 5 stars I told better jokes in 4th grade!.......2006-08-10

seriously bad...she sounds more like a motivational speaker for [...] women than she does a comic. I watched this last night high-as-a-kite and did not laugh at a single thing...that's never happened before. Had I been sober I wouldnt of watched it at all. TERRIBLE!

5 out of 5 stars Notoriously Hilarious.......2006-06-05

Out of all of Cho's currently released films, I found myself enjoying this one the most. I can't think of one moment on the entire DVD that was boring. It's notoriously delicious!

This performance is much more matured than her first, in every single way possible. If you are new to Cho's comedy, I would highly recommend trying this one out first.

5 out of 5 stars Margaret Cho Notorious Cho .......2006-04-04

Her verifications is excellent. Her use of the dactylic and ampabactic cutlets were fabulous and her iambic pentameter and polyrhythmic elutriation were incredibly examplatory .

1 out of 5 stars Annoying and unfunny.......2006-03-25

I am glad I rented this DVD. It actually is not even worth the rental price. It is that unfunny. I think her impressions are horribly annoying. She sounds bitter and evil rather goofy and funny. I would be surprised if a laugh track wasn't used. The camera never focused once on the audience. So who knows if they were really laughing. I think she is unattractive and that adds insult to injury. She think she is all that and a bowl of soy sauce but she isn't. Her only funny impression was when she was making fun of her asian parents. Other than that the best way to describe her unorignal comedy style is that it is comprised of generic and vulgar anecdotes that are more annoying to hear than funny. I think after her shows she is laughing at her audience back stage because she is managing to get away with telling awful jokes and stories and making it huge. She has the last laugh.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Nick Broomfield solved the murders of Biggie and Tupac. Nonetheless, he makes a convincing case as to who the perpetrators were and why they weren't brought to justice. Broomfield (Kurt and Courtney), who narrates and appears on camera, comes across like a scruffy Robin Leach, but he's done his homework and sniffs out the clues with the tenacity of a bloodhound. Time and again, he refuses to be intimidated--even when his life appears to be at stake. Fortunately, he was able to convince Voletta Wallace, beloved mother of Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.), to cooperate, and that opened many doors. Unfortunately, Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, refused to participate or to allow access to his music. She had nothing to fear. Broomfield is fair to both rappers, although the soundtrack is all-Biggie. Easily one of the most fascinating documentaries of 2002. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I liked this.......2006-04-12

It has an honest in your face tone to it and the style of the interviews lends a high degree of credibility.

The obvious reluctance of the people being interviewed makes it known that these murders were seriously planned by persons who can make ones life very uncomfortable..even cease.

This is a highly believable documentary.

That Suge has something to do with Tupac's 'disappearance' is wthout a doubt ...but I doubt the truth will ever be known.

3 out of 5 stars Did Suge Do It?.......2005-11-01

I've always been interested in the theories of Tupac's death, so decided to buy this documentary. This obviously deals entirely with the theory that Suge Knight arranged the hit, and then also Biggie's death, to make it look like retaliation. The problem with this theory is that i wasn't buying it before and after watching this im still not. It goes something like this, Suge suspected that Pac was possibly trying to get out of Death Row, he realised that if he killed him, he would have access to all his music, which amounted to hundreds of tracks. Also he would probably make more money from him if dead, as he would have become sort of a martyr. Up to this point it is believable, what isn't are the circumstances of his death. If Suge wanted Pac dead, why would he have a car pull up alongside and fire across the car right where he was also sitting (he also received a minor flesh wound), there would have been better ways to arrange this. Nick Broomfield fails to answer this, and i still can't really beleive Suge Knight planned it. It is much more likely that Orlando Anderson (the guy beaten up at the MGM beforehand) was behind the killing, or even that Biggie himself arranged the hit with the Crips that carried it out (though im not really buying that one either). Overall this documentary was interesting and worth watching, but it failed to provide anything more than speculation, and no answers.

1 out of 5 stars Ignore martee and his vice.god accounts.......2005-08-18

Hes upset of successful people because they can use their subconscious for success but unlike martee/druggie tell amazon.com to delete him.Buy this dvd if you like 2 pac, i don`t like this dvd much but i respect the fact he used his spiritual subconscious for real success.

5 out of 5 stars The real scoop .......2004-12-29

I think two or three men (mainly one) Go out out to find out about as much information they can get about 2pac and Notorious B.I.G. They go to some of their old friends, relatives people like that. They even went to Suge Knight that was in prison when they interviewed him. And Biggie's mother and even more 2pac's father in the flesh. All were on this movie. Telling their sides of how they felt and what happened with them since the death of 2pac and Biggie.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Murder Mystery........2004-07-05

Perhaps no murders in the music culture from the last decade have caused so much fascination and debate as those of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. The killings of these two rap stars remain important footnotes in the debate about the influence of rap music and the relevance of rap in today's popular culture. Nick Broomfield's latest film, "Biggie And Tupac," is both an exploration of the gangsta rap underworld and a fascinating search for answers and testimony involving the murders. As was the case with Broomfield's previous icon murder mystery, "Kurt & Courtney" which tried to find a link between Courtney Love and the suicide between her rock star husband, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, "Biggie And Tupac" doesn't solve the case or even come to a solid conclusion. Instead it presents us with a gallery of both corrupt and truth searching characters and lots of questions, many valid. Fans of Broomfield know he will stop at nothing to at least get a few comments, the man will try everything from sneaking mikes to chasing down reluctant sources to get some form of information. The stakes here are higher because the people Broomfield is investigating are not angry Punk rockers or disgruntled former friends but people linked to dangerous California gang circles, corrupt policemen and a record label boss who fashions himself as a modern day Al Capone. What we get out of the film is that Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls started off as good friends and as soon as they found real success with their craft other forces such as Suge Knight began to influence events with a negative air due to money and rivalries with figures such as Sean "Puffy" Combs. The main theory here is that Knight had connections with corrupt L.A. P.D. officers who worked for Death Row records on the side and planned BOTH executions and then blame them on the East Coast vs. West Coast "rap wars." It may sound like a wild idea, but look at the evidence and people Broomfield uncovers and it becomes more valid. And here Broomfield has more material to use. "Kurt & Courtney" was plagued by Courtney Love's restriction of Broomfield using footage and music, and eventhough Shakur's mother doesn't let him use songs, Broomfield uses interviews, early performance footage and photographs to describe the rise of Biggie and Tupac and point out those who were present and witnessed important events. It's a suspenseful ride at times, playing like a real life murder mystery. We learn a great deal about the gang world of California where being a "snitch" is a death sentence and Broomfield gives a tour of the excessive, edgy world of rap music. Bodygaurds and ex-cops are interviewed, all telling what they saw and we realize that indeed these are two murders surrounded by such strange stories, eyewitness accounts and corruption that there is no way these were random killings. And Broomfield does it with gusto and style, never relenting and even going for the big fish when he gets access into a prison facility to face Suge Knight in person. "Biggie & Tupac" is the kind of documentary those who don't even care for rap can enjoy because it is more about the mysteries surrounding the two stars' murders, it plays like a dark detective story that still hasn't found an answer. Broomfield scores again.

The title says it all: Tupac Shakur was as much angel as outlaw. Unlike some of the other profiles made in the wake of his passing, Thug Angel doesn't focus only on the first few days of his career or the last few days before his death, but on his entire life. That makes it valuable as much for the fan as for the merely curious. The production was backed by friends and associates and includes never-before-seen material. It's surprisingly evenhanded, juxtaposing footage of Tupac at 17, for example--sounding mature beyond his years--with an interview conducted years later on a shooting range. Passion was still in full effect, but idealism had been replaced by paranoia. Peter Spirer's film is a documentary, not a music video, and contains only snippets of Tupac's work. At its best, Thug Angel makes a compelling case for his continued relevance as an artist and activist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars "This ain't no democracy.".......2004-12-19

The documentary "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" takes a deconstructionist approach to analyzing the Rap superstar. Was Tupac a thug whose life ended in an uncanny replication of his lyrics, or was Tupac Shakur, a revolutionary with anarchistic beliefs? With these two diametrically opposed images, the filmmaker deconstructs Tupac's life while exploring both possibilities. As a result, this thought-provoking documentary offers a great deal of insight into a life that so often hit the front page.

Tupac, named after a Bolivian revolutionary, was born into a troubled family--his mother was a Black Panther, and other relatives served jail time. One relative even received political asylum from Cuba. By the time Tupac was a teenager, he was no stranger to poverty, and frequent moves across country finally left him living in Marin County. The film includes an interview with a 17-year old Tupac, and it's clear from the statements he makes that he's intelligent, idealistic, respectful towards women and very socially conscious. It is difficult to align these early statements of Tupac with some of the film's later interviews. Within a few years, now famous, Tupac's world view is much harder. There's one scene of him toting a weapon in a shooting range, and one senses he is preparing for the big showdown he is sure is in his future. It is at this point that Tupac makes several anarchistic statements: "The police ain't nothing but a gang. The National Guard ain't nothing but a gang. The army ain't nothing but a gang." But it's also quite clear from the documentary's investigation of Tupac's past why he felt this way. Tupac noted that even Dan Quayle took the time at the Republican Convention to lob a verbal attack against the rapper, and as his acquaintances realised, Tupac interpreted this attention to be devastatingly significant.

The documentary includes many interviews with those who knew Tupac best--relatives, former manager Leila Steinberg, Quincy Jones, and fellow rappers. The film touches on Tupac's Death Row Records contract, and the feud with Biggie. He is described by those who loved him as "the hardest working man in hip hop." "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" is a fascinating account of the rapper's brief and brilliant life, and as an attempt to unravel the mystery of Tupac's two sides, I think the film succeeds quite well. The DVD also contains a booklet that highlights key points in Tupac's personal life and his career--displacedhuman

As to say this, I can't get my eyes on Tupac. 'Cuz he had a lot going on in his life, you know what I'm mean. You see Tupac will be telling a lot of stories of his past when he begin writing poetry at a early age, learn to act, and how to be a superstar in the rap business. Yeah Tupac been gone for 7 or 8 years now, but in 10 years he'll be remember 'cuz he modered a generation for the hip-hop community. I also a lot of people from that culture to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, RFK, and on and on.

Now a lot of people are still talking about him and how he became a part of our culture. That's why he lived his life the way he live b/c of the fight with Biggie, the East Coast/West Coast rap war, how he got arrested, been in jail all of his life, need I say more?

Nobody even care on how he lived or how he died. He help changed that by putting it into his lyrics. The reason why I love him the most is there's nobody like him like Jada Pinkett Smith "There's nobody, nobody like that man. I don't care how many records you sell. I don't care how popular you are..."
You know Tupac lives on and he'll always will be to the fullest.

For those of ya'll are missing out a lot of good information about this icon, I urge you to check him out. He's one of the greats that put it on since Martin Luther King and Malcolm X we learned back in the day.
