Description
VIRGIN is the story of Jessie (Elisabeth Moss), a rebellious teenager who is wrestling with her own spirituality and her family's conservative Baptist tradition. After a sexual encounter that occurs while she is unconscious from drugs and alcohol, she finds herself pregnant. With no memory of sex, and having a dream in which God speaks to her, Jessie proceeds with the belief that she is carrying the next Christ child, a belief that at first enrages and then inspires her, causing violent opposition in her community.

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars A Directorial Failure.......2007-07-01

Steve Carell can be a good actor, witness his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and he receives some great support here from Catherine Keener and Romany Malco, but somehow it just doesn't work. The idea behind the film is tenuous, and is made even more so by modeling the hero on Pee Wee Herman (grown man rides bicycle, collects action figures). Carell simply comes across as being silly.

There are some uproariously funny scenes, which justify the time worth watching the film, but like a Chinese dinner, you'll feel empty an hour later.

For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.

Previously criticized for her marginal acting skills, Sofia Coppola made her directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides and silenced her detractors. No amount of coaching from her director father (Francis Coppola) or husband (Spike Jonze) could have guaranteed a film this assured, and in adapting Jeffrey Eugenides's novel, Coppola demonstrates the sensitivity and emotional depth that this material demands. Surely the pain of youth and public criticism found its way into her directorial voice; in the story of four sisters who self-destruct under the steady erosion of their youthful ideals, one can clearly sense Coppola's intimate connection to the inner lives of her characters.

Played in a delicate minor key, the film is heartbreaking, mysterious, and soulfully funny, set in a Michigan suburb of the mid-1970s but timeless and universal to anyone who's been a teenager. The four surviving Lisbon sisters lost a sibling to suicide, and as its title suggests, the film will chart their mutual course to oblivion under the vigilance of repressive parents (Kathleen Turner and James Woods, perfectly cast). But The Virgin Suicides is more concerned with life in that precious interlude of adolescence, when the Lisbon girls are worshipped by the neighborhood boys, their notion of perfection epitomized by Lux (Kirsten Dunst) and her storybook love for high-school stud Trip (Josh Hartnett). Unfolding at the cusp of innocence and sexual awakening, and recalled as a memory, The Virgin Suicides is, ultimately, about the preservation of the Lisbon sisters by their own deaths--suspended in time, polished to perfection, and forever untainted by adulthood. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Sensual and tragic.......2007-06-12

I've been hypnotized by this film from the moment it came out, and by the book before it.
Eugenides' novel reads like a series of glimpses into the mystery that is (or was) the Lisbon girls. I think Sofia Coppola does a wonderful job of transferring that humid, dreamy atmosphere to film.
There is a danger that because the film is so delicate it may float away, but the soundtrack keeps it anchored; in particular, the use of Heart songs throughout the Lux and Trip love affair.
Kathleen Turner is great as Mrs. Lisbon, making her human and making the audience feel for her even as she puts her four daughters in lockdown.
Kirsten Dunst, of whom I am a fan, is pitch-perfect as Lux, struggling with womanhood in the stifling atmosphere of the Lisbon household. I think it is best expressed when Lux conducts various affairs on the roof. She rebels even though she is virtually tied to the house. Kirsten Dunst pulls it off with a subtlety one can also see in films like Interview with the Vampire and Marie Antoinette, another film by Sofia Coppola.
This film is definitely worth seeing over and over again. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars The Virgin Suicides.......2007-06-10

I read the book about two months before I saw the movie. I read the book over and over again, asking the same question that the confused teenaged boys did in the story: Why? Now, they never figured it out, and did not intend to, seeing as how the fantasy of the five sisters was more important than the questions of reality. However, unlike the neighborhood boys, I thought I'd missed something. A word, a phrase, a motif that went unnoticed. I figured out that I hadn't missed anything, and was partially put off by the fact that I couldn't find a concrete explanation.

After seeing this film, I understand a little more than I did when reading the book. Ms. Coppola takes direction of an already concrete literary work, and changes perspective so that the things that cannot be explained are at least felt in some manner. The book focuses on the boys perspective ( which is the fantasy focus of the book)just enough to make readers wonder more about the girls. Sofia, shifts that just enough, not to lose the dreamy fantasy quality, but to layer it on top of the reality. We understand and feel the boys' desire becoming something that resembles a dream/fantasy, but we also get into the girls' minds just enough to take the edge off of the desire to know why. We are in the room with all five of them as they listen on the telephone trying to reach out to a world that they've been snatched out of ( in the book, we get more of a view of the condition of the lawn, the fact that no one leaves to go to the store, but has grocery delivered, etc.). We see the sun rise and set as the days go by, knowing that the sisters can only watch from a window. Those small moments, that feed the story from a different angle, make this movie great. Its delicately crafted direction and touch of feminine perspective makes the movie something you can watch without fear of another book-turned-movie catastrophe.

4 out of 5 stars A bit obscure..........2007-05-10

Though the book was a best-seller, I'm not sure why. It seems the theme of the book and the movie made based on it is a bit obscure. Of course, that could just be the genius of Mr. Eugenides. I enjoyed the book much more than the movie, though I say that about most "based on the novel by _____" books. It is more or less about the growing rates of suicide among teenagers, especially teenage girls, and the reactions of people in small communities. I believe it is more about the people surrounding the girls than the girls themselves, but we obviously cannot discredit the importance the message the girls are trying to convey about living in a strict household and being cut off from society. I believe it is a statement about physical alienation as it is alienation within the mundane "everydayness" the neighborhood they live in portrays. I gave the movie a 4, though I give the book a 5. I think Jeffrey Eugenides is giving us an important message, but many of us dont know where to look...

2 out of 5 stars I Didn't Get It.......2007-04-10

My wife recommended this movie one night, so we watched it together. She had seen it a few times before and really enjoyed it. Me.. well, I didn't get it. The movie revolves around the adolescent lust a couple of boys have for these sisters. The sisters' mother is a religious freak and when one of the sisters commits suicide, the already whacked mother gets even worst and eventually puts the remaining sisters in lockdown. meaning, she takes them out of school, burns all their rock records, and basically cuts off what very little social lives they had. Eventually, they all make good on the title and off themselves.

Now, while the acting in the movie is great, which is why I gave it 2 stars, I think the story is really lacking. My biggest complaint is there is 5 sisters. We get to know the 2 youngest, 'cecilia' and kirsten dunst character 'lux,' but the other 3 sisters are just kinda there. So really, why should anyone care if they're dead or alive? They don't really add anything to the story. We also see 'cecilia's' ghost on a few occassions. Why? I don't know. Seemed unnecessary to me. In my opinion, in good story telling, if you show it, you should use it. For example, in an action/adventure movie, if a character shows a gun, that character should use that gun or what would be the point in showing it to begin with. Same here, only with 'cecilia's' ghost. It served no purpose. The other thing I didn't understand was why the girls commit suicide and why they invited the boys over as they were doing it. Made no sense at all.

While I'm very much aware that Hollywood takes liberties often with source material, I think this story could have been MUCH better. It didn't need 5 sisters. All it needed was 2. It'd been much more interesting to watch Kirsten Dunst's character morning the loss of 'Cecilia,' perhaps being haunted by her memory and maybe causing her to have a strained relationship with her parents, boyfriend, and friends, ultimately ending in her own suicide than what The Virgin Suicides gives us. So, I cannot recommend this movie as it's a total waste of screentime.

My family and i enjoy watching Kirsten Dunst movies, we think shes a terrific actress. We enjoyed the plot of sisters sticking together. Thank you the movie was in excellent condition..

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from oppression and the power of Love - what more can you ask for?.......2007-07-03

As an adult who dislikes both anime and Techno music, I was vastly surprised by Interstella 5555. I viewed the first few videos on a popular video-sharing website, almost by accident. By the time I got through with installment 4 ["Digital Love"], I was completely and totally HOOKED. "OMG he CRASHED, oh no!... what now?!" One of the things that sets this DVD apart is how much and how quickly it makes you care about the characters. When was the last time you cared what happened to a character in a music video? I was doomed; I simply had to find out what happened, not to mention I wanted to see it in a more appropriate format, so I bought my own copy.

This saga of a kidnapped alien pop/rock band and the fan trying desperately to rescue them, no matter the cost to himself is a beautifully-done DVD with images that you will not quickly forget, people you will love and music that will stay in your head for days - if not weeks, and in this case, that is a positive thing. I think "brilliant" is not too strong a word for this project... and remember, that's coming from someone who has always hated anime. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie (whether you're a fan or not).......2007-06-27

This movie rocks. It's basically an animated movie, somewhat in the American style of Anime (but not Animation, i.e. cartoons). The unique point is the fact the whole movie is pretty much synced up with Daft Punk's Discovery album which in itself is pretty awesome. There are no voices, the whole story tells itself visually and with the music. I love it, I've watched it many times myself, and my children who are 10 months, 3, and 4 (boy, girl, boy) also love it, whenever I play it on my pc or tv, my kids come running, they stop screaming, stop running around, stop hitting each other, and will just stand or sit, pretty much memorized and watch the entire movie that way. There are just so many vibrant colors and the music again, is great.

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-06-24

As a fan of both Anime and Daft Punk this item is just about as good as it gets. At first it seems like a beautiful way to present a musical album, a nice screensaver as it were. However after watching this a few times and really embracing the story and relating the scenes to the lyrics or melody, Interstella 5555 becomes quite a moving experience. You will travel through a range of emotions with each song, uplifted and happy with "One More Time" to quiet and emotional with "Something About Us". My favourite track is "Face To Face", and it always tugs at my heart-strings towards the end.

Beautiful picture. I rate it alongside "The Castle of Cagliostro" as my all time favourite Anime films.

4 out of 5 stars Just what you should expect...that's a good thing.......2007-06-24

The movie is basically just a backdrop to the album 'Discovery' from Daft Punk. More specifically it would be imagining the reversal of creating a soundtrack around a movie, and instead creating a movie around an album. It is an interesting concept, and it works very well in this instance.
If you are a fan of Daft Punk it is a bit of a no-brainer...if however you are looking for a deep tranquil film concerning the problems of today's society mired in soul searching agony...well keep looking. This is entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-06-11

Description

Join the Joie de Vivre club with the maddeningly charming Lola, as she plots to loosen up her fiancé in this exuberant comedy. Everyone is wild about Lola - even, some suspect, her own stepfather…

Originally titled "Monella (Rascal)", "Frivolous Lola" has generally been available in censored versions. Here, for the first time outside of Italy, and with Subtitles, is the uncut masterwork of erotica at its most humorous. Long renowned for his work in documentaries and the avant-garde, director Tinto Brass is now famous as the world's premier erotic filmmaker, turning out movies that have bridged the gender gap, earning at least as many ardent female admirers as male fans. "Frivolous Lola" is perhaps his most likeable film yet.

Great, loved, and fun too. This film nice to watch when there's nothing you got in your DVD Adult collection.I'm a big fan of Tinto Brass it's to bad some of Hollywood movie machine studio don't pruduce the guy film, but thank god they don't his film are really racey.I'm being kind by saying that.I lot of other filmmakers try to follow this guyd film and some filmmaker sucseed and some failed badly.
Cheeky is a good film for adult lots of nudity and sex.
For thoughs who like soft core film this is it
I say buy it.

1 out of 5 stars You Rascal You.......2007-02-15

This is a waste of film. Tinto Brass probably wanted to make a tease-flick, but this is just a shame. The young lady who can't keep her skirt down flaunts her desire for sex before marriage in such a way as to embarass the viewer - especially shameful is the bar scene where she keeps displaying her crotch to a table of soldiers in order to get her boyfriend jealous. Too bad this went too far. The Italian title, "Rascal," is a better fit for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever Lola Wants.......2007-01-13

It seems to be a leading lady in a Tinto Brass film you must:

* Be young and attractive
* Have an exceptional sensuous body
* Not be shy about nudity
* Exude a cheerful, lighthearted persona
* Act loveably naughty.

That has been the case in the previous Brass films I have watched and reviewed and Frivolous Lola is no exception. Rumor has it that the inscrutable producer of erotica met the vivacious young actress, Anna Ammirati while examining her body. The body of her car that is, after being involved in a traffic accident with her. It doesn't matter whose fault it was, the outcome was inevitable - Anna gallivanting around with little or no clothing in his next movie. Anna is reputed to have entreated the enigmatic director to feature her in his next movie and a enchanting match was born.

The Plot

Lola is a carefree lass in an unnamed village in Italy of some notoriety and gossip. Her mother who grew up there, left years before but returned with a handsome paramour, Andr'e and a vibrant sexually precocious teen daughter, Lola.

Lola is a virgin a condition she dislikes. She is engaged to the son of the village baker, Masetto, whom she wants to deflower her. Masetto would like to wait for their wedding night and this frustrates Lola.
A sub plot of the movie is Lola's relationship with her alleged father, Andr'e. They both find each other and find each other attractive.

The Story

The story revolves around Lola's efforts to get Masetto to make love with her and thus take her virginity. She tries various tricks, including making him jealous by coming on with other men. There was even a scene in a tavern where she is jitterbugging with three soldiers, sans her panties, with flashes of her genital folds and pubis.

Lola's alleged father Andr'e fascinates her. He is somewhat of a leach with prurient instincts and she is drawn to and fanaticizes about him. She makes a couple unsuccessful attempts to seduce him.

In the end Lola does trick Masetto into deflowering her - her term and at their wedding the next day a scene takes place between Lola and Andr'e where you are left wondering, no believing that they also have sex.

In hindsight it may be a take on that old song of the fifties, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets."

Conclusion

Lola is indeed frivolous and afew other adjectives ranging from adorable to bratty. Her self-centered thoughtless behavior is nothing short of tawdry. If there are women that behave so flippant, I wouldn't want to be engaged to them. Yet, as a viewer there is something winsome about her frolicsome, lighthearted, even compelling behavior.

As with other Brass movies I have viewed a typical theme permeates Frivolous Lola. Nothing is shameful to her. She with the overactive libido was born to enjoy life and she resents anyone that wants to rein her in, while her man is supposed to go along with her indiscretions

Frivolous Lola is an exercise in exhibitionism. The movie seems to be a memorial to Lola's or is it Anna Amirati's shapely figure with voyeuristic peeks at her genitalia. The story seems incidental, it is merely a vehicle to attain the desired effect.

I do not mean to sound like this is bad. Contrary, it is good. I found the movie to be funny entertaining and stimulating - one of his best and one of the better erotica movies available.

The lovely Anna Amirati was uniformly naughty and loveable. Her body was adorable and her acting endearing. Supporting actors, Packtrick Mower and Mario Parodi did well too.

The film was shot in what appeared to be the Italian countryside. The sets and costumes were colorful and the cinematography was first rate. Rating 4.6 stars

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-11-10

Soft core porn masquerading as art, I didn't even make it through the first half hour of this film. Lola's cute, but it's still not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars A great tease.......2006-09-13

Lola is a young woman/girl in a superficially conservative village who seems to just love not wearing a bra behind semi transparent blouses and dresses and flashing her [..] at priests as she rides her bicycle around town. Lola is VERY sexy, a bit too sexy for her own good it seems, but all is well in the end, everyone seems to get a bit and we all just have to sit back and allow Lola to show herself to us and enjoy. It is funny and sexy, what more could you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-06-27

This is a good laugh of a movie. You have to see it. I've watched it like a lot. You have to have a gr8 sense of humor and sillyness. Don't take it personally if you relate to the main guy. He is hilarious....

1 out of 5 stars Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17

Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.

5 out of 5 stars R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format! (The original unrated DVD and R-rated full screen versions were released in December 2005, while the new R-rated widescreen wasn't available until January 2006.)

A "let's get laid" favorite from the teen-comedy trend of the early 1980s, The Last American Virgin is beloved enough to earn its own fan-driven website, and it's still lots of fun. While tapping into the same zeitgeist that popularized Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which was released just one week earlier), this above-average sex comedy mixes high-school high jinks with the real anguish of unrequited love, as a nice kid named Gary (Lawrence Monoson) falls for Karen (Diane Franklin), a cute classmate who won't return his affections. Gary delivers pizza, leading to the comic highlight when his horny pals (Steve Antin, Joe Rubbo) deliver more than pizza to a lonely Latina bombshell (Louisa Moritz). But Gary wants his "first time" to be special, and director Boaz Davidson smartly avoids the obvious by denying Gary of the thing he wants most. Intended as the first in a series of remakes of the Israeli "Lemon Popsicle" comedies of the 1970s, The Last American Virgin offers abundant nudity, a recycled soundtrack of '80s hits, and plenty of hair mousse, but it's genuine hormonal angst that's given it a lasting reputation. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Reality in a Hollywood movie?.......2007-04-11

The ending made this movie. Its not often that you can say a Hollywood movie reflects real life so spot on. This movie sums up the poor decision makeing (men and women) that is rampent when love is involved. It's no wonder 50% of all marriges end in devorce. Smoke and mirrors and refuseing to see the facts

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-04-01

I have loved it ever since I saw it in 1991( I was 10 at the time). It came on Tv. and I was hooked ever since. It was so so hard to find this movie. I always wanted to rent the movie, but the video stores never had it. I found it on amazon, so I had to buy it. I am now the proud owner of this hard to find movie

This is your teen movie you have to see. The ending made me cry, well almost. Karen totally did Gary dirty, after all that he did for her, when she got pregnant by his friend, who didn't want to claim the baby.
Gary was to nice, but he was in love with the girl. But I don't know if I would talk to my friend who did something like that to me. especially since he knew gary liked Karen.

5 out of 5 stars Deconstruction of the fictitious "American dream".......2007-03-01

After failing miserably in "The Karate Kid," unable to convince moviegoers that he could ever be a winner, here Ralph Macchio plays a more believable sap. And his girlfriend, far from cheering him on while he incapacitates his adversaries with "The Swan," turns out to be no more than an abortion-happy tramp in a pretty package. So true, so true. She basically dumps him for the sensei's testosterone-chewin' pet protege and from then on, Ralph is nauseated by the thought of having sex ... with girls anyway.

Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore is one of the staples of the comic opera repertory. The plot hinges on whether earnest but dim-witted Nemorino will snag Adina, the flirtatious heroine. She's a tease who takes up with Belcore, an army sergeant, to make Nemorino jealous. After numerous (and humorous) plot twists that include a phony love potion, it all ends happily. Adina and Nemorino declare their love for each other, Belcore is dumped, and the fraudulent Dulcamara does a landslide business in love potions. It's all a fast-moving bundle of fun, especially with the star-filled cast of this 2005 Vienna State Opera performance.

The leads are magnificent. Rolando Villazón as Nemorino exhibits a real gift for comic acting, manipulating his rubber face into dozens of hilarious poses, flawlessly turning stock comic gestures into laugh-out-loud moments, and even juggling apples with the panache of a circus performer. More important, he uses his lyric tenor to sing the part with impressive subtlety, suggesting Nemorino's desperation while singing of his love for Adina. His big show-stopper, "Una furtuva lagrima," features melting pianissimos and a breathtaking decrescendo in its final phrase. It literally stops the show, the audience forcing a welcome encore. Netrebko's Adina is every bit as good, with deft acting and a lovely lyric soprano voice that makes you understand why she's the only girl for Nemorino. Dulcamara is Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, whose ample bass joins a stage presence that puts him at the center of his scenes. His famous duet, "Venti scudi," with Villazón, is the highlight it should be. Veteran baritone Leo Nucci is Sergeant Belcore and while his singing tends to the dry and effortful, he's convincingly sleazy, adding to the laughs. Smaller parts and the chorus are fine and conductor Alfred Eschwé efficiently keeps the music bubbling along.

Otto Schenk's production, with sets and costumes by Jürgen Rose, dates from 1980 but still looks fresh with a village square dominating the picture-postcard view of a provincial Italian village. The costumes are realistic, with predominantly pastel colors for the villagers, bright colors for Belcore and his soldiers, and relatively nondescript outfits for the others, though Netrebko can't help exuding glamour no matter what she wears. The video direction smoothly focuses on singers and the stage action, but the sound recording is overly resonant, with inconsistent dynamics and the chorus' words obscured. Still, this is the preferred L'Elisir d'Amore. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars laughter in country love.......2007-06-17

Yes the acting of Rolando was out there but in opera if you are to see the smallest nuances you need to act big .TV and DVD home in on these parts which do look hammed up close but from the back of the theatre I am sure they are just right.I truely loved this opera it was so much a bright up beat production. There is little enough in opera repetoire for the singers to have fun and this is one where the lighter side and sillier side has its day.The addition of the live donkey reminded me of a programme with Birgit Nielsen doing the Ring cycle and lustily singing for her horse ,the look on her face when the stage hands brought in a real horse was worth its wieght in gold.(needless to say she didn't stop until the horse returned that was it she gave up !!)So who cares if caterpillar eyes are over the top I personnaly found this whole production to be a brilliant piece of musical entertainment with a wonderful cast and some really funny moments

4 out of 5 stars Anna, call me? haha blushes.............2007-06-15

The major culprit here is Villazon, who never stops moving and mugging for a single moment. With his Harpo Marx hair and caterpillar eyebrows, he's a walking cartoon, and he plays the character less as an open, uncomplicated bumpkin and more like the village idiot. One longs to tie his hands behind his back and yell "Don't just do something, stand there!"

what?! haha oh man that's HILARIOUS! I nearly soiled myself haha yea that's entertainment for ya, its vison oriented, sometimes way out funny, but pick one music genre that isn't vision oriented? Country, rock, etc etc, we like to see as well as listen, or buy the cd. People do not support, mostly they don't, fat and or ugly performers, but people like good looks and or characters.

And the bottom line, in life is, Villazon has got more money than any of us or most people, and gets more chicks than us, and most people, so who is having the last laugh huh? That is the bottom line in life eh? Look at history, so that's not my opinion

Now Anna, what it must be like to be her, think there is a man around that is man enough for her? Not me that's for sure, and I can't think of many either. What a stunning woman. Is she married? Nothing on her Wikipedia spot

No I couldn't give her even half of what she deserves. How many can?

What man in the entire world wouldn't mind hearing her as his wife listening to her sing while she is moving about the house while he reads and smokes a pipe in his den? Sigh

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER STUNNING L'ELISIR.......2007-06-07

Some operas live charmed lives both on DVD and CD. This is one of them. We have the Met/Pavarotti-Battle DVD and the Scotto-Bergonzi DVD. We also have several great casts on just CD and almost everyone of them presents an accurate presentation of what the composer asks for. This is not as easy as it sounds. Many Traviatas fall short of our expectations; just to name one opera that gets over recorded and not always well. Now let me be honest and say I don't always enjoy or get into much comic opera; Don Giovanni being an exception. It's really a comedy, tragedy and old fashioned morality play all rolled into one. Absurd plots and many farces just don't cut it with me. I took a risk on this DVD just to see and hear Netrebko and Villazon. I am not disappointed! This entire cast and production do Donizetti and this opera full justice. Netrebko is enchanting. Villazon is unique and special. He's almost Groucho Marx with a great voice. His entire face and body is an actor's dream come true and he can sing while being so physically flexible. His voice strikes my ear as having a little bit of Domingo and DiStefano in it. The aria "Una Furtiva Lagrima" has to be encored and is even slightly better the second time. After all his comic posturing his straight forward singing here is just a perfect contrast to all that came before. This DVD should be added to the Battle/Pavarotti and Scotto/Bergonzi if you already own them. Like I said I'm not the biggest fan of comic opera; yet, this production completely won me over. This is an enchanting evening for eye and ear with some glorious melodies by Donizetti. ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars a sparkling gem.......2007-06-02

This performance is a gem, fun to watch and beautifully sung. Rolando Villazon is an irresistible puppy, and Anna Netrebko is stunning visually and vocally. I've enjoyed an earlier Met video with Kathleen Battle and Luciano Pavarotti, but it was a "performance:" big stage, big cast, big stars. This one is intimate, frisky, nimble and light-hearted. Villazon and Netrebko have wonderful chemistry together, and the other principals inhabit their roles with similar gusto and enthusiasm. It's a happy, involving, and touching performance. The camera work is excellent, even showing us the glances between Villazon and the conductor before they repeat "una furtiva lagrima." The sound is a little distant and seems to depend on which way the singers are facing, but it's adequate. All in all, the performance is a sparkling gem, guaranteed to generate smiles.

4 out of 5 stars An fun and enjoyable performance.......2007-05-07

This opera is light and entertaining to watch, I enjoyed it for its fun quality and the performances of the lead singers, chorus, set and music. Villazon has a beautiful expressive voice and he can ACT, dance and juggle too; he 'is' the lovelorn swain. He also looks the part which adds to the performance. There is a rapport between Villazon and Netrebko which comes through in their scenes together. For a complete contrast and my 5* rating see their DVD of La Traviata with Hampson.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites!!!.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best comedies of all time!! I've watched it 25-30 times! The unrated DVD has some really great deleted scenes that are must-sees!!

Description

As The Virgin Queen begins, a young Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London by Queen Mary, charged with conspiracy and treason. Both women are daughters of the ruthless and oft-married Henry VIII, who plunged England into turmoil by breaking with the Roman Catholic Church. Mary wants to reunite with Rome, while Elizabeth is determined to stand by her Protestant faith--a potentially fatal choice. But Elizabeth's life takes an unexpected turn when Mary dies, leaving no heir to the throne. As the new queen, Elizabeth discovers the harsh realities of ruling a religiously divided nation and must learn to outwit her enemies and charm those who conspire to their own ends.

Soon under pressure to secure a politically advantageous marriage, the coquettish Elizabeth rejects a string of eligible royal bachelors from abroad, openly preferring the burning affections of her childhood playmate, the athletic, handsome--and married--Robert Dudley. But is she toying with him as she is with her other suitors?

Starring Anne-Marie Duff (The Aristocrats, The Magdalene Sisters) as the shrewd and captivating queen who defended her throne amidst an atmosphere of plotting and intrigue, torture and murder, The Virgin Queen is a riveting drama that explores the fascinating 44-year reign of Elizabeth I.

5 out of 5 stars The most true movie I have seen.......2007-05-15

I have watched several movies and read several books on Queen Elizabeth and this is by far the most accurate movie available. Although I love all movies about Queen Elizabeth I have found this one to be the most historicaly correct.

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Queen of England.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the story very much. Besides being a fasinating story, I felt that it also was historically accurate. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful to watch and watch again..........2007-04-10

Five stars. And five stars to the reviewer "Buck Bauer" whose review pointed me to Amazon.co.uk as a source for the soundtrack. It seems that folks either love or hate the music. I ADORE it and am thrilled to have finally obtained a copy. I was really struggling with the lyrics of what I believe is the first song in the movie. On watching the Helen Mirren version of Elizabeth I on HBO I connected the lyrics to the poem by Elizabeth I "On Monsieur's Departure"

It's hardly worth comparing the various portrayals of Elizabeth I. All versions are interesting and stand on their own. And I agree with another viewer who feels that Tilda Swinton (outstanding in "Orlando" - another film with a haunting soundtrack) would perhaps make the best Elizabeth I yet.

5 out of 5 stars Trust me.......2007-04-09

I wrote up a rather length and detailed review of this excellent series and then the computer crashed. Divine intervention!?

Suffice it to say that this is a marvelous drama for both new and old fans of the English history genre. Anne Marie Duff and a stellar supporting cast (Tom Hardy and the magnetic Derek Riddell deserve special recognition) make it even more compelling than the celebrity-driven versions more well known. Forgive some erratic direction, phony looking glue-on facial hair, Essex's hyped up Oedipal complex and frequently too on-the-nose dialogue and just enjoy the performances, production values and even soundtrack. While it curious that this UK-filmed miniseries seems strangely devoid of any rain maybe Gloriana was so named for the weather!), it is a first rate work well worth the 4 hours' viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Sparks flying!.......2007-04-05

I really enjoyed this telling of Elizabeth I's reign. Though the crowd scenes were often sparse of crowds, i thought the acting great, the costumes amazing, and the details and passing of time fairly accurate. However, the best part of the miniseries were the smoldering sparks between Elizabeth (Duffy) and Robert Dudley (Hardy). I really enjoyed watching this update to the Elizabeth story.
