Though the subject matter of Mysterious Skin is as sensational as that of Gregg Araki's other films (such as Totally F***ked Up, The Doom Generation, or The Living End), his direction is richer and more multilayered than ever before. Two Kansas teenagers named Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 10 Things I Hate About You) and Brian (Brady Corbett, Thirteen) share a childhood trauma--but their responses are radically different: Neil hustles tricks, while Brady, who can't remember what happened, believes he was abducted by aliens and left with "missing time." As both try to make sense of their lives and Brian struggles to find out the truth, Mysterious Skin builds to an emotional pitch that some viewers will find uncomfortable and others will find liberating. The characters of Neil and Brian have a fullness that lifts Mysterious Skin above most examinations of sexual abuse and trauma. Gordon-Levitt has been deservedly praised by the critics, but the entire cast--which also includes Bill Sage (Simple Men), Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24)--turns in superb performances. A striking and powerful movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Sensational!.......2007-06-19

Mysterious Skin- Sensational, controversial, intense... so many words can describe this movie by Gregg Araki based on the novel by Scott Heim. The first time I watched this film, I was blown away by the display of raw emotions of the two young lead actors- Joseph Gordon Levitt (who plays young hustler Neil McCormick) and Brady Corbet ( who plays Brian, the shy teen who believes he was abducted by Aliens). There is a special, albeit disturbing connection between the two young men and the film captures the journey towards their reunion and the ultimate discovery of that particular event that connects them.

Gordon-Levitt delivers one of the most unforgettable performances I have seen in recent years. As a young hustler, his dark and secret past, allowed him to mask his emotions, and live life as if what he does for a living is something ordinary and mundane. With his eyes showing off nothing, and staring blankly into space, he goes from one job to another just as if he's replacing parts in an automotive shop or sorting out letters in a mail room. There are certain sex scenes that are graphic and disturbing, but it captures the world of Neil- dark, violent, uncaring... It's the only way he can go on- the absence of emotion and with it, the inability to truly love the people who care for him. Corbet also delivered an amazing performance, as Brian he is the shy, trusting and unassuming young man who is so obsessed with recording his periodic episodes of forgetfulness, that he opens himself to anyone who cared enough to listen...

There is a certain fulfillment in watching this movie and see it towards its end, it opens up a world that is there, perhaps a world apart from your own, but it's there and you may need or may not need to protect yourself to discover it.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and unsettling film.......2007-06-07

Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Brian (Brady Corbet) played on the same Little League team when they were eight, but they grew into very different young men. Neil is a burned out, soulless prostitute, while Brian is shy and confused and obsessed with UFOs. When they meet again as adults, Neil reveals a terrible truth about that summer they played baseball.

This movie is a shocking look at pedophilia and its effects on the lives of two children. It is at times difficult to watch, but the actors' performances are flawless. Gordon-Levitt is stunning as the young hustler who lives a zombie-like existence, and Corbet is appealing as the naive boy who thinks he was abducted by aliens. The story is cleverly constructed; parallel vignettes from each boy's life trace their development until they are reunited and the truth brings them a degree of peace. This unforgettable film is brutal and very, very sad.

3 out of 5 stars Decent film, but bad adaptation........2007-05-27

Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki, 2004)

A good deal of my problem with Hollywood can be summed up by one unfortunate set of scenes in Gregg Araki's adaptation of Scott Heim's intriguing novel Mysterious Skin. All of these scenes concern Brian (Thirteen's Brady Corbet)'s relationship with Avalyn Friesen (Mary Lynn Rajskub of 24). Every time she appeared on the screen, I couldn't help but think "this is the conception of `grossly overweight' [as she's described in the book] in California?" That alone was enough to throw off my enjoyment of the film; the feeling was exacerbated by a number of small changes, the kind of thing I'd normally assume was done to preserve the film's R rating, but with more involved in each case. (For example, the lovely scene in the novel where Neal (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), his mother (Elisabeth Shue), and Eric (Jeff Licon) go picnicking the day before Neal leaves for New York is torn to shreds; the portion of it that might have messed with the film's rating is there, in abbreviated, almost prudish, form, but all the rest of the scene has been dispensed with.)

Not a terrible movie, but do yourself a favor: see it before you read the book, so you don't know what you're missing until afterwards. ** ½

5 out of 5 stars What Film Is All About.......2007-05-16

This is one of those films that is so well made that it makes other films look bad. The acting is top rate and honest. The subject matter is difficult, but the film handles it so well. This a must see film.

5 out of 5 stars Very disturbing but Very good.......2007-05-14

I thought this movie was excellently done and very watchable. Excellent acting and story. But the story was very disturbing, showing the effects on kids of abuse. It really opened my eyes to the problem of child abuse. A must see for every open minded free thinking adult. Not sure if I would recommend it for teens though.

Description

Because the muscles don't end at the neck! Our face, constantly exposed, is our calling card. We may have toned bodies and great skin, but once our facial and neck muscles sag; they make us look tired, drained and old. Facial and neck muscles can be exercised just like any other muscle, to strengthen and sculpt it anew. The exercises illustrated in this DVD provide a great foundation for daily workouts that will naturally lift, strengthen and sculpt those muscles, creating a refreshed look that is firm and youthful. The course is comprised of seven segments: Forehead, Eyes, Mouth, Cheeks, Jaw and Neck; a Full Exercise Routine. The Facial Training method presented in the course was developed by Tal Reinharts. Tal specializes in a wide variety of physical training and dance methods. Her studies and extensive training has culminated in the development and refinement of this method for Facial Training. Color - 65 minutes.

2 out of 5 stars New Generation Bejeweled/Millionaire!.......2007-06-12

Great idea using a muscular representation of an aging face! This video does demonstrate very well the effects, i.e. what occurs to the facial muscles as we age without some type of successful intervention to stop gravity and all of the associative muscles in each location. However, when trying the DVD I did not feel any resistence or lactic acid burn, both of which are necessary for firming and toning.

Also, initially the different cameras and angles were a novel way of presenting these exercises. Quickly they became distracting and annoying, as well as appeared to greatly lengthen this video. This was much too long to be done each morning and evening. It would probably result in my pulling my hair out! Ouch!!!

How believable is it to see young beautiful models who have very little age or wrinkles to demonstrate? That may be a draw for very young females, not for mature and intelligent women. On the other hand, it is much more convincing and validating to see first hand the creator of the program demonstrating her techniques, as Carole Maggio does in her books, videos and DVDs, as well as the CDs for home and car use! Not only do we see the creator of the exercise program, we are as well witnessing the successful result of someone in the second half of her century and, `we get it'! Carole Maggio looks great at this age BECAUSE of her program. Innovation comes from experience!!! She has been doing and perfecting her technique for over 20 years! She doesn't just talk - she walks the talk!

I am always on the lookout for natural programs. However, this appears to be missing the target population. I have definitely achieved muscular definition and toning, as well as I now possess a radiance that can only be achieved by increased blood circulation to my face - which Carole Maggio's complete program delivers! I have learned a new and lifelong skill! Check out the June issue of More Magazine, a national magazine for women over 40, to see the outcome of Carole Maggio's Facercise program. I'm the oldest one, 56 years young, however that is only obvious by my driver's license! Since doing her program I am given more, no pun intended, compliments than ever in my life. In fact, I have never felt more beautiful!!!

1 out of 5 stars Didn't like it!.......2007-06-11

I sorry to say but I was very disappointed in this video. Maybe someone else will find it useful but it didn't serve my purpose.

2 out of 5 stars can cause creases.......2007-04-29

The finger placement isn't adequate in these exercises. The skin is allowed to crease which will cause lines to form. The lack of placement of the fingers doesn't allow the muscles to work to maximum capacity. It takes too long to complete this program. I don't have one hour a day.

5 out of 5 stars Works for us Guys Also.......2007-03-19

As the other reviews attest, most users of the Tal Reinhart Facial Workout DVD will be women anxious to avoid plastic surgery (or reluctant or unwilling to consider it). Facial musculature, and its slippage over time however, is identical for both sexes and few males can deny that if we're fortunate enough to last to "a certain age" (49 in my case) we could most likely benefit from this sort of a program.

And the good news for us aging XY's is that if you can overcome your "hell no I won't ask for directions" stubbornness, this program can REALLY do you some good. Tal Reinhart is not my first facial exercise guide; I've also done Carole Maggio and a couple other books, and those ARE helpful. Nevertheless I would recommend this as the place to start. First because VIDEO is by far the best way to learn these exercises. Although I do the Carole Maggio workout faithfully I am never 100% sure I'm doing everything correctly. Even the best descriptions and still photos can't demonstrate a facial move as well as video can. Second because Tal Reinhart is VERY well organized and presented. First time viewers can learn the individual exercises, practice them in isolation, then (quickly) advance to the full workout, offered without interruption at the end of the DVD. This is an EXCELLENT way to organize the material and demonstrates considerable foresight on the part of the producers to optimize our use of this material.

The first part of Tal Reinhart focuses on each individual exercise, explaining not only the technique but also showing via computer graphics how age and neglect cause facial muscles to sag. It's a horror show indeed! House of Wax part 2! See once-supple faces turn into cranky grandmothers before your eyes! More than anything else these visuals reinforce why facial exercise is IMPORTANT to personal self-confidence and general ongoing maintenance. Indeed, if you're reading this, you are most likely getting much of that motivation already from your own saggy visage staring uncomfortably back at you every morning from the bathroom mirror.

In addition to these eye-opening graphics (yes-intentional pun), the demonstrations are very slickly done and reasonably easy to follow. It sure doesn't hurt that the individual exercise demos are split between three gorgeous young Israeli models (actually the entire production is from Israel) whose faces are alabaster perfection to begin with. But who can fault the producers for using the beauty to which we aspire to motivate us? All three ladies are well experienced in the exercises they are demonstrating and as indicated earlier are easy to follow along with.

But the critical question is of course does it work? My short answer is YES however I must qualify that response by adding that I am continuing with much of the Carole Maggio workout alongside this one so it's impossible to say where one leaves off and the other begins. The eye & upper face exercises are MUCH more comprehensible in Reinhart than Carole's books so anything above the nose I credit to Reinhart.

In evaluating this question we need to carefully consider exactly WHAT counts as success. I realize no amount of exercise will shrink my Darth Vader helmet of a skull; I must also accept that pattern baldness is just an indignity that life commands me to endure, and like a woman refusing plastic surgery I will NEVER glue a rug to my scalp (or anything equally ridiculous). In other words, my expectations have to be in line with what can be achieved.

Even within those limitations I'm satisfied that the results justify the effort. I started facial exercise (Maggio) back in June '06 and only picked up Reinhart in early '07. I have been doing both daily and fairly quickly saw my face firm up and take on a chiseled shapeliness that certainly wouldn't have happened on its own. Taming my tendency to a double chin has taken somewhat longer but with ongoing effort it is DEFINITELY receding and I'm convinced that this too is an important battle that can be won. I am slightly amused by other reviewers complaining that facial workouts create more lines than they erase. What you're seeing here (for the first time) is muscular definition; would you gripe if you could see a six pack on your abs after months of effort? EVERY change I've observed on my own face has been an improvement!

An IMPORTANT (and possibly overlooked) point made on the video is that the "full routine" closing the DVD serves as a basis for constructing your own personalized facial workout (the full routine on the video takes about 20 minutes). In other words, don't just follow along with the "full routine" and wonder why things aren't shaping up as quickly as you'd like. I suspect most men (like myself) will require extra work and effort to sharpen the mouth and jawline. Be prepared to DO EXTRA reps for the areas you're particularly concerned about. This is where it might be useful for you to have a second book or video for another perspective. However I believe you CAN get good results using only the exercises demonstrated here, provided you'll customize your routine to match your needs.

So then, fellow males, have I convinced you? If you're not happy with the face you're showing then here's your best chance to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

5 out of 5 stars Great for overall toning AND taking care of trouble spots.......2007-03-18

Working out and dieting can bring about major changes in your body - but those benefits don't always extend to your face. I became interested in this DVD because I wanted to tone up my jawline, eliminating the dreaded "double chin." But first I watched the entire DVD two or three times, and was impressed by how thorough, well-explained and challenging each of the exercises were.

Once you have become familiar with the system, you can just click forward to the "Full Routine" at the end of the DVD. It's excellent for toning up the entire face - but my favorite sections have to be Cheeks, Jaw, and Neck. Since I began doing these exercises about 4 weeks ago, my jawline has become significantly tighter, prettier and more defined. Love it!

In yet another of a long line of lame Blake Edwards's films in the 1980s, John Ritter stars as a compulsive womanizer trying to get his impulses under control as he seeks to reconcile with his ex-wife. But his gonads get the better of him every time, and they also get the better of the jokes here, which are distinctly few and far between. Indeed, the film has only one sure laugh, a rather tasteless scene involving a darkened room, glow-in-the-dark condoms, and two men, neither of whom realizes the other is there until the lights go out and they've stripped for action. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Comedy Classic..........2007-02-22

They just dont make em like this anymore... too many "polictically correct" lighthearts out there that complain when they think a movie is going to offend someone or something. Blake Edwards is a great director, and John Ritter was perfect for the part. I had been waiting for this movie to be released on DVD, as I remembered watching it when it first came out nearly 18 years ago.

1 out of 5 stars Dragged in several places...........2006-09-12

Fell asleep while watching this movie, twice! It started out well enough, but then kept getting bogged down with all the scenes where he just talks to the bartender or to the shrink.

Never would have rented it except to see Robert Dowdell (VTTBOTS) in a bit part....

4 out of 5 stars Skin Deep.......2006-02-23

Great old movie from my past. Language is a little harsh for some people, but very entertaining anyway. Will make you laugh. Not a movie for the kids.

4 out of 5 stars Skin deep comedy.......2005-12-04

One of the finest films of Blake Edwards since Victor / Victoria. John Ritter ( splendid here ) incarnates a womanizer and alcoholic famous writer who is in a bad professional moment and still in love with his ex-wife in this sarcastic non-stylished battle-of-the-sexes comedy that combines brilliant sight-gags and clever dialogues and return to us the best Edwards ( A shot in the dark ; The party ; The Pink Panther strikes back ). An intelligent comedy conceived as it was the confessional visual diary of his protagonist, strategy that allows Edwards to integrate a collection of funny sketches that work autonomously inside a solid narrative structure.

4 out of 5 stars another lost classic.......2005-10-01

This is another film which seems to have gotten lost or forgotten about as time passes but is yet one of those movies where most people who have seen it think it was hysterical. What also suprised me was that at the time of John Ritter's such unfortunate passing very little reference was ever made to this film. The only mention of it was in lists of previous works, but yet was one of his best and most complete performances.
Ritter steals the show in the blackest of black comedy's by the master of humor Blake Edwards. Playing an alcoholic, womanizing, divorced, middleaged, selfish washed up writer.
This film shows the dark side of life through the ligher side of self destruction. Ritter offers non-stop laughs with several scenes of full flat out physical comedy. There are several scenes (as others too have said) which I have watched over and over knowing the outcome but unable to get enough of the delivery.
A true black comedy combined with all the slapstick humor anyone could ever want!

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful collection.......2007-05-15

I love this collection. It brings me back to Hemingway who I read while growing up in the Fifties and Sixties. The restorations of the Scope movies are outstanding and the extras are informative. The cinematography and music of Adventures of a Young Man are very moving. This film brought me back to my youth. I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars why do Fox do this.......2007-03-26

I have already purchased Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Sun Also Rises. I would really like to add Adventures of a Young Man to my Fox CinemaScope collection but why do they (Fox) force me to pay $44 for the lot. Come on Fox Classics why not release these as singles. Same with Soldier of Fortune and The Tall Men. I wonder if the studios read these messages but if they did they would find out what people want. I am collecting the entire 20th Century Fox CinemaScope collection from 1953 to 1967 and its nice to have them in single discs so they can be placed one year after the other. Waiting for all those other classics to be released like King of the Khyber Rifles, The Rains of Ranchipur, Woman's World, The Cobweb, The Adventures of Hajji Baba and many more. Come on Fox Classics bring 'em on.

3 out of 5 stars Great,but dissapointed(a bit).......2007-04-30

just got this dvd and love it. but was dissapointed when I found out that the uk version came with the hyde park concert. not that big of a deal since it's on aol video but would of loved to had that too. I love the intro to this dvd I saw it on danny clinch's site and that made me want this and it's great. I also wondered that if it was filmed in HD why it wasn't released on blu ray or something? that would have been cool but has great picture too. If you like this band buy this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars skin and bones.......2007-03-09

david grohl is the man. the foo fighters put on a amazing aucstial performance i must say you should get the dvd it has 6 more songs on it and it has dave talking with the audience which is worth the price alone.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I thought.......2007-02-14

I have just always dug the Foo Fighters. But to hear how they not only use their knowledge and skill, but also their relationships with other fantastic musicians in composition of their acoustic stuff, just deepens my respect for them. This was wonderful and you may have the CD, but to see them do the show is really fun!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing sound quality, great choice of songs.......2007-02-01

One of the best acoustic sessions ever performed by a rock band. Hands down, the Foo Fighters are an accomplished band and they demonstrate it during this show. Many of the classics like "My Hero" and "Everlong" were just meant to be played acoustically. A few other of my favorites include "February Stars", "Cold Day In The Sun", and "Big Me", which were given a complete different dimension in comparison to their "plugged" versions.

I truly enjoyed it, the Foo Fighters are real musicians, and their audience are people who love music. To complain about a dirty word or two, does not reflect in the quality of this product. Guaranteed!

4 out of 5 stars More than just Skin and Bones.......2007-01-27

This DVD is a great addition to any foo fighter fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars Kei Mizutani Solo .......2007-04-08

This video features Kei Mizutani alone in various outfits and posing positions. It is a solo modeling dvd with background music featuring Kei exclusively. There are other Kei solo videos out there like "Bosei Honno" 11/18/05, "Binyu" 6/24/05, Youjo Kei Matiriaru Garu (Bewitching Kei The Material Girl)1995, and the latest released about 2006 called "Attack Zone or Side" from the company Attackers. These videos are just as good or even better than "Undressed.." but her best videos are Joji: Lovers K(1994)Sexual Body K, Daydream(1994)Love Matters, and Kiken na Kaori: Midnight Rose also known as Kiken Na Houkou/or Noukuo(Dangerous Aroma). To find these rare videos one would have to travel to Japan especially the Jimbocho district in central Tokyo but keep in mind that in Japan Kei's real name is Saori Fukuda.

2 out of 5 stars Naked Japanese chick.......2007-03-10

I like asain women and this woman is pretty. The video is not from the U.S.A so it is a bit different. It is just Kei Mizutani running around naked. There are really no good close ups and Penthouse and some other companies have made better nude modeling videos.

3 out of 5 stars Visually Delightful.......2007-01-06

Want to be challenged and take your mind off real life for a while? This isn't your film, it requires no mental capacity. However, if you enjoy the female form this film provides the visual imagery.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful soft girl but not a movie.......2006-11-10

If you r looking for an erotic movie don't buy this one. It is only a strip show. the two stars are for the beautiful soft girl.

5 out of 5 stars Kei Mizutani is hot!.......2006-07-12

Kei Mizutani is simply gorgeous! The world needs more goddesses like her. If you like this, I'm sure you will dig "Wild Girls: Thailand" (ASIN: B000F6YVRW) stunning Asian girls getting naked on pristine Thai beaches .. I heard the Wild Girls crew went to Croatia after Thailand! When are they going to Japan?!?!

    4 out of 5 stars This ROCKS.......2005-11-29

Hi! I loved this dvd! The effects are good, and I think its scary! But i am 10. The disfigurement is great and is really scary. I don't think it was as good as the 1st one, but it was a lot better than the 2nd one. I think Liam Neeson was best in the part, Larry Drake was BAD. And Jeff Fahey was good. Nice voice.

3 out of 5 stars darkman is back..for round three............2005-10-19

this movie is a great popcorn muncher!! sit back relax and enjoy...although not as : powerful" as the first one it still has a decent plot my only gripe is the dvd ..there are no extras period not even a trailer or anything talk about bare bones..still if you liked darkman one and 2 which i thought were excellent pick this one up just for the film..

1 out of 5 stars dont waste your time.......2005-06-20

I look at the average raiting for this movie. # stars, now thats supposed to mean its ok. Well ppl, this plotless load of junk is getting more than it deserves. I read some review saying the musicwas good, and, well, from my perspective It seemed like the music was played at entirely random moments. Like it could skip from a fight scene to a dramatic we feel sorry for darkman moment, and i would almost barely knotice, if it wasnt for stupid clips they play of images that make no sense. It was like they didnt know what to show so they figured this is kinda how he feels so lets just put this here. Save your money. I bought this after seeing the first, which was lame, but i though it was ok, and hoping this one would hae like maybe better action sequences or something. Well this was in 6th grade. HUGE mistake i hated it when i first saw it. It seemed like they wanted to make a sequel but never got around to doing it. And about the actrion sequences it looked like i was at six flags watching that batman show they play. Good, considering its live, but lame as far as movies get.
Oh, and the villians who were supposed to seem smart or truly evil, just seemed spiteful and annoyingly upsessed with killing. I really think this is one of the most absolutely stupid films ever made. But that was untill I saw reptillian. Which is kinda depressingly awfull.

3 out of 5 stars "Darkman" Has Potential as TV Show..........2005-01-08

Lets stop making lame sequels boys and girls. I mean this isn't a real bad sequel, but they are getting lamer. Why not slow it down, and turn it into a TV series. It would be exciting and different from anything else on the boob tube. Jeff Fahey is always welcome in any movie, but doesn't have the menacing premise that Larry Drake had. Still, loaded with lottsa action and suspense. Good special effects enhance the story, and lets face it, you need this one to complete the set.

    3 out of 5 stars DARKMAN CAN'T DIE.......2004-04-24

Big return for the most frightening character ever been. While the first straight-to-video sequel was a little bit weak and pointless (but still enjoyable) this one could have been a great theatrical follow-up to SAM RAIMI's cosmic masterpiece if done with the proper production values (big budget) and more sequences.
Of course, this one is the best "video sequel" and the real one by all means. You know, they filmed "DIE, DARKMAN, DIE!" long time before "THE RETURN OF DURANT", but when Larry Drake agreed to reprise his role as Robert G. Durant, the production company skipped DIE and went to film RETURN.
As far as concerning DIE, I liked the story a lot. Rooker is da man! Great villain. Arnold Vosloo was really getting in touch with Darkman, you can see it from his performance direction.
FInally, there's a fandom for Darkman at westlakedarkman.proboards3.com - Just enjoy.
I'm waiting for a DVD release of "DARKMAN III: DIE, DARKMAN, DIE!". Mmm... featuring deleted scenes and documentaries? Hell yes!

DARKMAN still remains the most frightening hero who ever graced the world. The "cult" will rise from the ashes just like Peyton Westlake did. The time has come.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING FILM, OKAY DVD.......2007-03-20

First I have to say that two weeks ago I had the luck to see a French video version of the film dating back from the 80's and it looked utterly gorgeous and had it all( the lesbian scenes, the dogs, the Francis-Bacon hallucinations... etc All from the same master!) The new Shriek Show version of this gem is only a success... In comparison to the previous double edition of the film which was an excessively expensive scandal! There might be all the missing scenes here, still unless you really need to wear glasses, you'll see right away that the different elements of the film are not of the same quality... So okay this version might be better than no complete version at all, you've got to know that it is far from perfect...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Giallo .......2007-03-15

This is my favorite Fulci and one of my favorite Giallo's. It has a very good story, a great soundtrack and just enough gore to satisfy Fulci fans.

I first bought the original butchered Shriek Show DVD and was torn when watching it, on one disk was a restored widescreen butchered version and the other disk had a more complete version but it was cropped and looked to be taken from an old VHS. Luckily the new release solves the problem with an uncut, widescreen restored version. Seeing the uncut version restored and in widescreen felt like I was experiencing the film again for the first time. This release almost makes me forgive Shriek Show for their first butchery.

    5 out of 5 stars A NEW & BETTER version???.......2006-12-29

The wait for the definitive version of LIZARD might just be over. Fans of this film have been dealing with VHS bootlegs from European sources for quite some time. Media Blasters announced the DVD version years ago and when it finally came out everyone was disappointed at the result; good quality and widescreen and cut or bad quality and pan & scan and uncut. In addition the uncut version was supposedly mastered from a PAL source which alters the running time due to the difference in frames per second with the NTSC format.

Knowing all of this, I finally bought a copy - settling on the idea that this is the best it's ever going to be.

...But then to my surprise I noticed TWO different listings for this DVD on amazon - the original MB version that I just purchased, and this one dated for a March 2007 release...by the SAME distributor!

Internet research revealed this information taken from the forums on DVD Maniacs.

"Over the past few days, I have been in correspondence with Richard York of Media Blasters, who is supervising the company's upcoming re-release of A Lizard in a Woman's Skin. Since I'm apparently "the most vocal critic" of their previous release (which both alarms and thrills me in equal measure), he wanted to give me the opportunity to ask any questions that I might have about the version they were putting together, and, having discussed the matter with him, I am now supremely confident that the upcoming release will not only blow away the existing Media Blasters version, but should finally be the definitive release of the film that fans have been waiting for for years.

First of all, this will not simply be a straight copy of the Italian release by Federal Video. Richard is aware of and has viewed this release, but instead Media Blasters have created their own transfer from the same film elements used for that DVD. In doing so, they have been able to identify and avoid a number of the problems affecting that release, including material missing from the opening sex scene and Julia Durer's party, as well as the mangled "rippled/unrippled" dream sequence and the dodgy splice where the same footage of Jean Sorel's character appears in two different places. The running time of the final version will be 103 minutes, making this a proper NTSC presentation rather than a PAL to NTSC standards conversion."

So...this seems like a pretty good indicator that all hope is STILL not lost for this film. And if I only need to wait 3 more months for this ultimate version it will be worth it. I just need to resist the urge to open my current version and return it instead!

5 out of 5 stars BETTER TO INVEST IN THE UK RELEASE.......2007-05-31

This surely is a great set, but you would be better off getting the UK release The Early Hitchcock Collection (available from Amazon.co.uk), with the same transfers and 4 more films missing here: Champagne (a very rare film in the canon), The Farmer's Wife, Blackmail and Number Seventeen. That set is an absolute must for anyone interested in the film career of Alfred Hitchcock, with some of his earlier British films (including 4 silent movies), lovingly restored and with some wonderful extras, most notably an hour long documentary on early Hitchcock. It's amazing how great these movies look on this new masters (infinitely better than all previous releases, that can now be easily dismissed). I just hope that Studio Canal and Optimun Classic get round to release soon the rest of the British films, particularly The Lodger, the first true Hitchcock work only available so far in unwatchable transfers. Some of these films may not be great works of art, up to the standard set by the master in his later opus, but in all of them can be found moments and ideas which speak loud of a real genius in working process. Don't miss it!

    5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2007-02-10

The 5 films contained in this artfully crafted 3-disc set are really the best versions ever released on US home video. This collection contains the remastered versions from Studio Canal that look and sound incredible. While some say "not Hitchcock's best" these early films are of great interest to both collectors and fans and those interested in the master's early technique. The documentary, while brief, is insightful and well done. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Hitch finds his "voice".......2007-02-09

First the good news--we get a solid transfers of early Hitchcock with some minor and major classics early in his career. Studio Canal has done a nice job with these and while the transfers aren't scratch free, they look quite good given the age of the source material and quite a bit better than some of the earlier releases of public domain sources. This boxed set (once you open it) looks like an old bound copy of a script. The outside has a photo of Hitch (which reminds me of a deathmask)from the Universal archive.

The first two films in the set "The Ring" and "The Manxman" were made the year after the success of "The Lodger" (which would been shelved when studio executives thought it a disaster. Luckily, Michael Balcon stepped in a man who championed Hitch early in his career and the film was a wild success). "Murder!" is an early talkie (sadly the German version isn't included. It would have been nice to see for comparison sake as it was shot with a different cast on the same sets). In the early days of film alternate versions were shot for other markets where they might be popular usually with a different director. Hitch spoke German since he worked early on in that country shooting films and absorbing much of the early German expressionist styles that he would reference throughout his career)so directed it himself. "The Skin Game" and "Rich and Strange" (the latter an early Hitchcock classic) are also included. A pity that "Blackmail" (Hitch's first talkie that was also shot to be shown as a silent film) isn't included as well.

The bad news is that we don't get any feature length commentary tracks by Hitchcock historians and film scholars (which is just as well if these things bore you). We do, however, get a new 15 minute featurette focusing on Hitchcock's early life, his collaboration with his wife Alma (who is often overlooked--we must remember that it was team Hitchcock collaborating which consisted of Hitch, his wife Alma and whomever their current favorite writer was)and the development of his early style. It features interviews with USC Hitchcock Professor Drew Casper, director Peter Bogdanovich, Hitch's daughter and screenwriter/film historian Steve Haberman. We have a generous amount of clips from the set illustrating their points. I do wish that "The Lodger" had been included in this set but that's a pretty minor point (although honestly it does belong here as an example of his developing sense of style). Also missing is Hitch's "Number 17" which would have been a natural to include in this set even though the plot is a bit confusing, it's a fun ride.

This is an excellent collection of early minor classics as Hitch developed his film style. It's clear that he was influenced by seeing other directors such as Fritz Lang and FW Murnau but he had already begun to develop his own distinctive voice as a film director. This is a good set to get and is a pretty inexpense handsome package for fans.

4 out of 5 stars Early Hitchcock restored........2007-02-09

I'm very glad Canal has invested in restorations for these early Hitchcock films. There probably isn't much money in these restorations as the films have been in public domain for decades and can be found in every DVD bargain bin. They look very good for their age but I question some of the "foley" work added to the soundtracks. In the sound films, it is obvious that tinkling glass sound effects and other little audio nuances have been mixed in to the old mono track.

The films will be primarily of interest to an avid Hitchcock fan, with their subjective camera tricks and embellishments, early examples of the Hitchcock style. "Murder" yields some interesting moments, such as the melodramatic musical cue of "Tristan and Isolde", later used as a basis for Bernard Herrmann's "Vertigo" score.

Looking forward to a second volume from Canal.

4 out of 5 stars Early semi-classics RESTORED from 35mm........2007-02-09

Throw out those Madacy & Laserlight DVD's! The U.K. Studio Canal 35mm Masters are here, professionally released with little artifacting by Lions Gate!
I would have given this DVD box set 5 stars except that 1) These are not Hitchcock classics, they are good examples of his early work but they are no Psycho, 2) While mastered from 35mm, they did not get the Criterion treatment of removing scratches & dirt specks. Still this is a great improvement over previous releases of these titles. I only wish "NUMBER 17" was in this set, that early classic deserves the Studio Canal treatment.

This set features a mix of silent films & early sound British films. There is also a nice 15 minute bonus on disc 3 that explains the difficulties of filming sound films in 1930 and how Hitchcock got around the problems.

Disc #1 : Two Silent Films
"THE RING" (1927) - Two boxers fall in love with a girl named Nellie. Very visual, early signs of Hitchcock's style.
    "MANXMAN" (1929) - Hitchcock's last silent film! A Love story about two fishermen & a landlord's daughter.

Disc #2 : Two early sound films
"MURDER" (1930) - the 104 minute U.K. version, good suspence drama. A jurer re-thinks his verdict and investigates the crime himself.
"SKIN GAME" (1931) - Based on a John Galsworthy play, a little stagy. A traditional family battles a (then) modern family over land. Not as racey as the title would suggest.

Disc #3 : One more "talkie" and a bonus feature
"RICH AND STANGE" (1931) - Unexpected riches don't bring happiness for a married couple. A tale with a moral.
"THE HITCHCOCK WAY" (2007) - 15 minute documentary interviewing Alfred's daughter and surviving crew members as well as film historians. Of special interest is the explanation of how difficult it was to work in early sound films and how Hitchcock got around the problems in 1930.

Excellent acting elevates Second Skin to earnest heights of heartfelt melodrama in contemporary Madrid. It's a Spanish soap opera in the most intelligent sense, inviting comparison to the intimate passion plays of Pedro Almódovar and Eric Rohmer. Director Gerardo Vera's approach is more conventional, despite the fact that this modest tale of marital discord involves an unhappy wife, Elena (Ariadna Gil), whose suspicions are only slightly mistaken. Instead of another woman, her husband Alberto (Jordi Mollà) is having an affair with Diego (Javier Bardem, from Before Night Falls). He's tormented by his genuine love for his wife, child, and gay lover, and his inability to choose between them. Unfortunately, the screenplay decides for him, resorting to a last-minute twist of fate to resolve the dilemma that Alberto couldn't solve on his own. It's a cop-out solution, more suited to bad cable TV, weakening an otherwise honest and emotionally involving film. Recommended, with minor reservations. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars sad.... really wonderfully sad.......2007-05-30

I found this movie had a really sad feel about it, from the opening credits through to the sad ending. It tugs at your emotions throughout and you cant help but feel sorry for each of the three main characters, even the son, who has only a minor part. Though the movie's colouring is bright and locations and people are all beautiful, this cannot distract from the fact that no good can surely come from this relationship, a feeling of pending doom and underlying hysteria is always there. I thought it well acted. Even though most did not like the ending, i felt it kept with the theme of the movie (sad). Highly recommended as a tragic love story for those who like to shed a tear for a love that could never be.

5 out of 5 stars A MAN TORN IN TWO...........(or: J&J Burn Up the Screen).......2006-06-16

    ****

(Torn between the life society forces one to live and the life one needs live...........)

How utterly devastating for lead character, Alberto, as for any of us, to face the realization that everything he's done in life (carrying on a family work tradition, courting and marrying, parenting) is NOT who he really is. A third generation (grandfather, father before him) airport operations worker, and husband / father......these are all roles in life which have been 'expected' of him, all roles in which he's truly tried to give his best. In the end, all that trying might not prove to be enough. But would even finding the "love of his life" (Javier Bardem's Diego) prove enough? He'd thought....hoped....it would. After all, it is this man whom he's told in so many words: "I think this time with you has been the best in my life."

Yet, can someone truly successfully live a double life? Alberto is faced with answering this quandary upon Elena's discovery of his outside-their-marriage activities. In seeking the answer, will he find his feelings for Elena prove the greater or will he find their life together has been based on only what was expected of him (expectations......expectations, meeting them can tear you apart)? To compound his conflict, at the near conclusion of everything, when Diego says: "you have to start over......," you can plainly see the realization in Jordi Molla's oh-so-expressive eyes and face (this man is so beautiful), that his quandary has just been pushed beyond the level of human endurance.

FINAL RESTATEMENT: In the end, then, we can see we have been given the study of a man raised and pushed into being something he isn't. It's the story of oh, so many out there. Some are able to break the mold, others not---the strength of commitments (to spouse, to children, family) being too great. Or perhaps that's the excuse used for staying within the mold. But in the hearts and minds of those who do stay, the longings---those yearnings for "the other"---are there.......always there.......and they hurt. Alberto might be able to break from the mold, but to what point? Only viewing this film, dear reader, will provide you the answer.

(A word of warning to those possibly offended by scenes of male love-making. In the "Unrated' version, they are intense)

PS---Many aspects of this Spanish film pre-sage ones in America's later released "Brokeback Mountain" (2005). Was Ennis's conflict any more soul-wrenching than Alberto's? Yes, Ennis is much the simpler man, but over and above that, when it comes to the love of your life, does it really matter where in this world you find that love (out-of-the-way ranch town or bustling city.......lofty urban areas or soaring mountains)?

4 out of 5 stars Javier Bardem is once again amazing in this film........2006-04-02

After viewing this the other day I find it intriguing. This film consist of an married couple and a male lover, only this time it's not the wife but the husband who's cheating with another man. Some of the scenes made me cringed a speck. Though, it is a bit TV plot based on a true story, and it has rarely been seen on cinema, doesn't necessarily mean that it cannot be done. In fact, the quality that makes this particular movie a good piece of art is that it portrayed as a good archetype of a modern life situation that happen to occur more often than one could suspect.

The husband's unwillingness and incapableness to find his true nature, constantly lying to his wife and his lover, has driven those last characters to despair in understanding and helping the man they love but who they don't know. The wife never suspected that her lack of involvement in their relationship could endanger her marriage at the point of seeing her husband seeking for an affair. As for the gay lover, the fact that his present companion has afraid to be seen in public with him, like two lovers rather than two friends, hurts him badly because he accepts his own nature. The intriguing excuses of Alberto, the husband, makes them reacting towards him trying to solve the puzzle that he consists, when the easy way out of the situation is right near them (like when the wife cannot enjoy being with another man when she has the opportunity or the lover won't accept his female colleague to help getting over him). Three persons portrayed in their interior (the opening credits with the x-rays is one of the most beautiful openings I've seen lately) with their emotions thickening as the film passes.

The players of this movie are excellent, particularly Ariadna Gil, the wife. What disappointed me were the last fifteen minutes in which seems that the writer and director of this movie were replaced by others who didn't know what was done before, leaving the ending so pathetic and inconclusive.

I had read that this film has caused a lot of controversy in Spain. It is establishing a trend in Spanish films exploiting gay themes by casting some of the country's most popular male stars as lovers to lure viewers, therefore appealing to voyeurism. This "gayploitation" has been going on for over a decade in Spanish cinema. In fact, it's hard to name an established Spanish actor who hasn't appeared in at least one gay role. However, in most cases, these roles or their sexuality have been secondary. Whether this film is voyeuristic or not is certainly up to the viewer to decide. Still, it is worth a watch.

3 out of 5 stars Spanish Gay Soap Opera.......2005-12-02

As others have noted, this well-acted, glossy-looking film has a soap opera set-up, but with a gay twist. In spite of that, "Segunda piel" starts off very promisingly but then it becomes increasingly preposterous, and by the end the film's plot has degenerated into something worthy of the "steamy erotic thrillers" that, in the U.S., now go straight-to-DVD and in the 1990s would star the likes of Andrew Stevens, Sally Kirkland or Jeff Fahey. To be fair, U.S. films would not show the sympathetic scenes of gay male intimacy seen in this Spanish release. In spite of the overblown melodramatics during the second half of the film, Bardem, Gil and Molla are, as usual, good and great to look at, and I did end up enjoying the film, but in a trashy fun sort of way.
