Jimmy has a calling to box and nothing can stop it, not even the veto of his parents. So he spars in secret, sneaking down to the local gym to meet with his mentor/trainer Harry. Still, he's haunted by guilt, manifested as the specter of his father, glowering at him in the ring. Complicating matters is the plight of his best friend, who hates boxing but is forced into the sport by his wealthy father. Rod Steiger (In the Heat of the Night) does the gruff, heart-of-gold duties as Harry. The relationship between the two is believable and touching but comes to an abrupt end when Harry succumbs to a heart attack just as a competitor rats out Jimmy to his parents. While the ending is predictably upbeat, there are dark moments along the way and some tough boxing scenes, making this most appropriate for ages 8 and up. --Kimberly Heinrichs

When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi

It's the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded Beast and its owner (James Earl Jones) who live behind the left field fence. Soon nine boys have become best friends, Scotty is part of a team, and their leader has become a local legend in this hilarious and warmhearted comedy.

5 out of 5 stars A funny and classic baseball-worship kind of movie.......2007-04-12

Scotty Smalls moves to Los Angeles in the early 60's just two weeks before the 5th grade school year ends, which isn't enough time to make friends before summer vacation. He's still getting used to his new step-father and doesn't know how to catch or throw a baseball, and to make matters worse doesn't even know who the "Great Bambino" is. Some of the neighborhood kids gather every day at "the sandlot," their own personal baseball kingdom, and he tries to casually join them. But it isn't until Bennie Rodriguez, the best and most ardent player of them all, asks him to join and gives him the confidence he needs to learn to play. It makes for the best summer of his life and lifelong friendships, especially when he unknowingly uses a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and hits it over the fence into the yard of "The Beast," a huge baseball-eating dog.

This is one of those classic baseball-worship movies on a par with "Field of Dreams" and other favorites. Plus, it's a great family movie with few profanities - it's funny and the things the kids do and say resonate with everyone whether or not you grew up playing another sport or in another time period. My kids love to watch it regularly, and I'm impressed with how good some of the children actors are (James Earl Jones also has a bit part at the end). I especially like the scene where they play baseball against the "rich kids" on their real baseball field (mostly because it's the field where I played Little-League as a kid - which wasn't on the "rich" side of town and it's not really LA!), but my kids like the pool scene.

Bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday and although he never heard of it, he absolutely loved it and had to go out and buy the Sandlot 2 right away! Nice, clean, fun with a learning behind it (of course).

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting), basically begins as a freewheeling story about robbing trains but soon becomes a chase as a relentless posse--always seen at a great distance like some remote authority--forces Butch and Sundance into the hills and, finally, Bolivia. Weakened a little by feel-good inclinations (a scene involving bicycle tricks and the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" is sort of Hollywood flower power), the movie maintains an interesting tautness, and the chemistry between Redford and Newman is rare. (A factoid: Newman first offered the Sundance part to Jack Lemmon.) --Tom Keogh

Description

Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the "buddy film" with this box office smash set in the Old West. The Sundance Kid (Redford) is the frontier's fastest gun. His sidekick, Butch Cassidy (Newman), is always dreaming up new ways to get rich fast. If only they could blow open a baggage car without also blowing up the money-filled safe inside... Or remember that Sundance can't swim before they escape a posse by leaping off a cliff into rushing rapids... Times are changing in the west and life is getting tougher. So Butch and Sundance pack their guns, don new duds, and, with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross), head down to Bolivia. Never mind that they don't speak Spanish - they'll manage somehow. A winner of four Academy Awards (including best screenplay and best song), here is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of fact and fancy done with true affection for a bygone era and featuring the two flashiest, friendliest funniest outlaws who ever called out "hands up!"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.......2007-06-27

At the close of the sixties, Paul Newman and up-and-comer Robert Redford would make the evergreen "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," the first of two hugely popular collaborations with director George Roy Hill. (The other was "The Sting.") No standard western, "Butch" romanticizes the true story of the infamous "Hole in the Wall" gang, creating the ultimate buddy picture, and (thanks to William Goldman's brilliant Oscar-winning screenplay), a movie that's by turns lyrical, hilarious, and tragic. An eternal crowd-pleaser.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful picture. It looks brand new........2007-06-21

I have loved this movie since I saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. I watched it on t.v. over the years and felt sad as the film seemed to age.
The dvd was such a pleasant surprise, the picture was great/the colors were crisp. Even the sound seemed clearer and more brilliant. The interviews were so wonderful-I was so absorbed in all of the splendor.
As a kid, I decided that my favorite scene was the mountain scene (when Butch and Sundance are being chased by the law). I always laugh when Butch says, "The fall will probably kill you!" and then they both jump.
I am the author of-Dreams in August: Life, Love, and Cerebellar Ataxia

5 out of 5 stars The West at its Best.......2007-06-08

Among all Western movies, old or new, this ranks among the best.It is a classic:funny, sad and beautiful. And what beutiful phtographie of Utah landscape!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Western.......2007-05-31

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a modern western. It is more exciting and has more action than the typical slow western. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are an excellent duo. A great story with an even greater cast.

5 out of 5 stars Still a winner.......2007-05-16

The movie itself hasn't lost anything with age--still funny and sad and amazingly beautiful. The special features are outstanding; it's hard to imagine what the movie would have been with Steve McQueen as Butch and Paul Newman as Sundance, but that was the original casting. How it fizzled and why the studio fought so hard to find someone--anyone--in place of an unsuitable fill-in named Robert Redford are only a few of the inside stories packed on the features disc.

Solidly built around a subtle yet commanding performance by Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most highly-praised dramas of 2004. In a role that demands his quietly riveting presence in nearly every scene, Cheadle plays real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in the Rwandan capital of Kigali who in 1994 saved 1,200 Rwandan "guests" from certain death during the genocidal clash between tribal Hutus, who slaughtered a million victims, and the horrified Tutsis, who found safe haven or died. Giving his best performance since his breakthrough role in Devil in a Blue Dress, Cheadle plays Rusesabagina as he really was during the ensuing chaos: "an expert in situational ethics" (as described by critic Roger Ebert), doing what he morally had to do, at great risk and potential sacrifice, with an understanding that wartime negotiations are largely a game of subterfuge, cooperation, and clever bribery. Aided by a United Nations official (Nick Nolte), he worked a saintly miracle, and director Terry George (Some Mother's Son) brings formidable social conscience to bear on a true story you won't soon forget. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Once you find out what happened in Rwanda, you'll never forget. OscarÂ(r) nominee* Don Cheadle (Traffic) gives "the performance of his career in this extraordinarily powerful" (The Hollywood Reporter) and moving true story of one man's brave stance against savagery during the 1994 Rwandan conflict. Sophie Okonedo (Dirty Pretty Things) co-stars as the loving wife who challenges a good man to become a great man. As his country descends into madness, five-star-hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle) sets out to save his family. But when he sees that theworld will not intervene in the massacre of minority Tutsis, he finds the courage to open his hotelto more than 1,200 refugees. Now, with a rabid militia at the gates, he must use his well-honed grace, flattery and cunning to protect his guests from certain death. *2004: Actor, Hotel Rwanda

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FILM! WELL DONE!.......2007-07-04

I did not know much about this movie before I watched it. I was completely engrossed in the story and characters. A well made folm that probably hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. The DVD transfer is very good.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece/Guaranteed to shed a tear!!!.......2007-06-30

Hotel Rwanda sheds light (as it should do) on the 1994 Rwanda genocide that led to the deaths of close to a million people while the world looked on.
The manager of a Belgian owned luxury hotel, an ethnic Hutu, tries desperately to save his Tutsi wife and children as the world around him descends into chaos and madness; a nightmare where hatred and slaughter are the order of the day...
Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Joaquin Phoenix, Nick Nolte, Jean Reno and the rest of this AMAZING cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are extraordinary to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is something else)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide important insight not to mention more than a few tears.
More relevant than ever, the movie does a great job as an eye-opener to one of the darkest events of the twentieth century. The film provides the necessary background as well as an accurate description of conditions on the ground during the few months that the conflict lasted. The world's reaction, or lack of it, (especially the American and British hypocrisy and inaction, and the French support of the Hutu perpetrators) is briefly touched upon.
Moreover, it could have been and it should have been much more graphic in showing what really took place in Rwanda's "killing fields."
Hopefully more will be done to stop the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Western Sudan and we will not have to wait for another movie to come out after it's all over before people become aware and do that which is humane.
Similarly to movies like The Lord of War, The Last King of Scotland, and Blood Diamond to name a few, Hotel Rwanda draws attention to some pretty important issues facing Africa.
In short, Hotel Rwanda is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal & Highly under-rated.......2007-06-19

I don't know what else to say about this movie. It's was one of the most moving stories about Africa that I have seen. It's a shame that it didn't receive more rewards. I only wish I would've seen this film sooner. Powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Cheadle's Performance is Flawless.......2007-06-05

Every actor in this film is excellent and delivers a rather understated performances. Perhaps it's because the harrowing and tragic tale is something the real-life people portrayed here have come accustomed to somehow and that is a tragic commentary in of itself. In any event, this film while filled with excellent supporting actors belongs to its lead, Don Cheadle who earned a Best Actor nod for this performance (and should have won hands down).

Cheadle has been building an impressive resume with memorable supporting roles in which he nearly eclipses his leads. He began his career on TV's Picket Fences - Season 1 and remainded on the show for it's entire run and eventually emerged as the star of it. He then went on to cool roles like in Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones and facinating and complex roles such as in Crash (Widescreen Edition), but nothing compares to his quiet, restrained performance in this film that I can only compare his role and delivery of it to Gregory Peck's Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition) in which both actors have the challenging task of exhibiting what I call "quiet courage" under great calamity and showing their great love and compassion for others without exactly "showing" it. It's all in their subtle gestures, whispered dialogue, and revealing eyes. Both films remind me of that old adage teachers like myself live by, "no cares how much you know until they know how much your care."

I, like other reviewers here, went into this film knowing nothing about the topic. I rented it based upon my respect of Don Cheadle and the positive reviews that surrounded this film when it was released. Again, I knew nothing about the topic of the film itself and was I shocked by the events that unfolded in the film. It is truly a harrowing tale told with great respect and dignity. I found no silly cliches or trite treatment of this compelling and important event in history.

This film is outstanding and it that will move you and stay with you long after the experience of viewing it is over.

5 out of 5 stars Hotel Rwanda.......2007-05-31

This movie took me by surprise in that I went into unknowing about the subject matter. It really bothered me too once I was enlightened and suppose it should have. So it succeeded on those grounds. Highly recommended as a history lesson disguised as entertainment or can evil history be entertaining? The truth and true happenings are stranger than fiction. God have mercy on evil souls. Every good soul should see this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great program - read his excellent book too.......2007-05-14

This program is enormously entertaining, with tons of great footage of the artists, interviews, and hilarious anecdotes. I worked at Atlantic for several years and can attest that this documentary delivers an informative survey of the man and the label (though i could argue about certain artist omissions), which produced so much great music covering every genre. If you're a serious pop/rock/R&B/jazz fan, you really owe it to yourself to see this, and if you want to learn more about Mr. Ertegun and Atlantic, i HIGHLY recommend the book he wrote several years ago, "What'd I Say", which has hundreds of stunning photos and commentary from him and the others (artists and executives) who made it all happen at Atlantic (the book is pricey, but totally worth the money - product link is below)

What'd I Say: The Atlantic Story

5 out of 5 stars Fond Memories of the Past..........2007-05-04

Most informative and enjoyable. Sadly, we look back at a world that's gone forever, replaced by the current trash with pretensions to music.

If you enjoyed the music in the film, consider ordering "Atlantic Rhythm & Blues, 1947-1974". The sound should be and could have been better, but the set is well worth having.

Now if only Columbia would reissue the Ethel Waters gatefold 2-LP set that came out back around 1980, and include "On Stage and Screen"....

5 out of 5 stars For once, something to watch on TV.......2007-05-03

I saw this entire 2-hour show on New York's PBS station last night and it was great. You can feel Ahmet's passion for music as he relates his childhood experiences in Turkey, his passion for America ("the land of cowboys, dancing girls and jazz") and explains the formation of Atlantic Records.

Rather than become a diplomat or a "civil servant like my father" (Ahmet's father was the Turkish ambassador to the U.S.), Ahmet and his brother created America's most important record company. The story of Atlantic Records is as much about racial integration and artistic integrity as it as about music.

It's also great to hear the musicians' side of the story. The very recent footage of conversations between Ahmet and Robert Plant, Ray Charles, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Bette Midler really shows the respect and admiration all these great artists had for him.

Finally, this is an entertaining show, featuring some great laugh-out-loud moments. My favorite is when Ahmet tells of how, as a 12-year old, he hailed a cab in mid-town Manhattan and said to the driver "Take me to Harlem." All he wanted to do was hear some jazz and within a few minutes, he found himself at the Plantation Club and later, at a rent party rubbing elbows with musicians and dancing girls.

Having grown up listening to Atlantic artists like Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Crosby, Stills & Nash, etc., I found this show absolutely fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars If you've loved music over the last 30-50 years, this is a must.......2007-05-03

I just got done being transfixed by this program on American Masters on PBS. Ahmet Ertegun's life was incredibly full, full of joy and music for many years. From the "race" records of the 40's to the British Invasion to Woodstock to Kid Rock, the fingers of Ahmet Ertegun and his brother were on the pulse of popular music on both sides of the Atlantic. I enjoyed this show so much I've pre-ordered two copies.

A sizable hit with both teen audiences and sports-themed movie enthusiasts, 1984's The Karate Kid had the right combination of heart and action to spawn three sequels of varying quality between 1986 and 1994; all four features have been packaged together in this three-disc set. Though plot elements varied from film to film, the core story (and the series' greatest strength) remained the same--the relationship between a wise Japanese martial arts teacher (skillfully underplayed by comedian Pat Morita) and his young American student (Ralph Macchio in the first three films, and future Oscar winner Hilary Swank in the final entry, The Next Karate Kid). The first of the Morita/Macchio matchups remains the best of the four features, with excellent performances from both leads and director John G. Avildsen (who also handled Rocky and the first two Kid sequels) expertly balancing the emotional moments with the pure excitement of the martial arts tournament that serves as its finale.

The subsequent sequels with Macchio seemed pulpier (especially The Karate Kid, Part II, with its rekindled wartime romance subplot), and the inevitable come-from-behind competitions lacking the impact of the original; 1994's The Next Karate Kid (directed by Christopher Cain) put a slight spin on the formula by replacing Macchio with belligerent teen Swank, but it too seems like a retread of the first film. Still, the messages inherent to each film--finding one's inner strength, trusting your heart--should ring true to new generations of younger viewers. Fans may find the Collection light on supplemental features--while all four films are presented in anamorphic widescreen format, only the original (which was previously released in pan-and-scan only) offers commentary by Avildsen, Macchio and Morita and several making-of featurettes; the three sequels, packed into two discs, offer no extras. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Box Set Of Karate Kid Films.......2007-03-03

Karate Kid is one of those movies that is iconic which means you know the film by heart and phases from the film that become apart of everyday vocabulary in our culture and all people, of different walks of life can relate to it , it's classic and timeless that's what karate kid is . before karate kid there was kung fu it was nice but always distant somehow. then came karate kid this film did'nt just blow open the doors it kick them open to show a different society and method we could learn from but also relate to in this film, the good and bad to learn lessons from them. i just loved this film for being just straight foward in it's approach of teaching positive lessons to kids about life because as we all know life is'nt a bed of roses or whatever saying you use, it's tough. Daniel( Ralph Macchio ) and His Teacher ( Pat Morita ) are positive role models and have been since it's release in 1984. Do Yourself a Favor And Pick Up A Copy Of This Trilogy Of Films.

This Set is Wonderful in picture and in sound and are as good if not better than when they were released in the theaters and on video for the first time in 84 and 94 and this marks the first time the first karate kid has been released in widescreen. yeppy daniel son!

John G. Avildsen not only directed Rocky, he tried remaking it over the years in a dozen different ways. One of them was this popular 1984 drama about a new kid (Ralph Macchio) in town targeted by karate-wielding bullies until he gets a new mentor: the handyman (Pat Morita) from his apartment building, who teaches him self-confidence and fighting skills. The screen partnership of Macchio's motor-mouth character and Morita's reserved father figure works well, and the script allows for the younger man to develop sympathy for the painful memories of his teacher. But the film's real engine, as with Rocky, is the fighting, and there's plenty of that. Elisabeth Shue is on board as the girl the klutzy Macchio dreams of winning. --Tom Keogh

Description

A fatherless teenager faces his moment of truth in The Karate Kid. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) arrives in Los Angeles from the east coast and faces the difficult task of making new friends. However, he becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks his handyman Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita), whom he learns is a master of the martial arts, to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that karate is a mastery over the self, mind, and body and that fighting is always the last answer to a problem. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops not only physical skills but also the faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale to this entertaining film.

This was a big hit moviue and went one to make three sequel all of them except the next karate kids have the original boy from the first movie in them. For the most recent movie made in 1994 they replaced the boy with a seventeen year old girls who's parents are killed in a car crash. This movies has phonimal music. A young kid challanges the rival of his ex girl friend to a match after he plays a slight prank on him for beatening him up earlier in the movie. Can Mr. Miga train this boy into a fighting champion of power and honor to victory. Find out in the thrilling conclusion. This movie should be fine for ages 12 and up due to mild violence for its time and and occasional curse wored thrown in. A word of adivce try to by these together if you can. You can get part III and four together by themselves on one dvd without parts I and part II but I recommend you order then one at at time if you don't decide to get the whole collection at once. The reason why I suggest this is because the cheaptest I saw that they had 3 and four together one dvd with out the first two used is somewere inbetween 39 and 45 dollars if they charge you for shipping. Either get these together with the rest of the collection or buy part III and four on seperate dvds.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-05-17

My nephew was recently being picked on and we decided to put him and his cousins in Karate classes for self-defense. Soon after, Wal-Mart ran an ad with The Karate Kid DVD in it. Perfect! I loved it as a kid and now the children in the family fell in love with it.
The Karate teacher even uses parts from the movie to make his point about something and the class knows what he means. The movie teaches that Karate is for defense and that it's bad to use it to pick on others. This is definitely a movie worth the purchase.

A film adaptation of Dito Montiel's memoir of the same name, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is a compelling, thoughtful movie based on Montiel's childhood growing up in 1980s Queens. A writer and director who understands his limitations, Montiel wisely left the acting to the pros. Shia LaBeouf (Holes) plays him during his adolescence, while Robert Downey Jr. (Good Night, and Good Luck, Wonder Boys) portrays the grown-up Dito. Never mind that there is absolutely no physical resemblance between the two actors; LaBeouf and Downey are so convincing in their roles it doesn't matter. Switching effortlessly from present day (where Dito is a successful author) to the past (where he is a tough little kid trying to figure out if there is life beyond New York), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints tackles Dito's complicated relationship with his parents (Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest), as well as the friends he left behind. Eric Roberts is magnificent in a small role as one of Dito's tough, childhood buddies. His powerful performance makes viewers remember there was a time when Roberts was better known for his acting skills than for being Julia's big brother. Montiel--a first-time filmmaker--won the Director's Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival for his autobiographical movie. Raw, gritty, and honest, Saints) makes a strong impact and leaves the viewer curious as to how the rest of Montiel's life will work out. --Jae-Ha Kim

2 out of 5 stars More like a handbill than a guide..........2007-06-20

Dito, the teenage main character, wants to escape from his neighborhood, which is colorful but depressing and lacking in opportunity. His family and friends don't want him to leave, and exert maximum guilt to try to get him to stay. They basically want him to spend his whole life sitting on the front stoop. The narrative drama is the tension between his desire for escape and the stranglehold of the old neighborhood. And that's the entire plot of the film right there. Worse, due to a flashback sub-plot with Robert Downey, Jr. portraying the older Dito, we know all along that he does escape the neighborhood. So even that bit of dramatic suspense is tossed out from the very opening of the film. Sure, there's some local color mixed in, but it isn't nearly enough to sustain the whole work. And there are some showy cinematic techniques that do nothing to advance the narrative and seem out of place. The characters were underdeveloped and the whole film seems very half-baked.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent story telling..........2007-05-13

Although this film was written and directed by the person it portrayed, it is still a work of genius. The cast, the soundtrack, the cinematography were all perfectly worked into the film. Yes this movie shows us how rough childhood is for some people, but it also shows that hope and the friendships we make will carry us through any burden. Hands down, the best movie I saw or will see this year.

1 out of 5 stars A Guide to recognizing you hooribale Movie.......2007-04-30

This movie sucked if i wanted to be depressed i would of just went shopping, there nothing more depressing than not haveing money to shop with, don't get me wrong this is probably the most derpressing movie i saw. nothing happy end up in this film. Although Shia LeBaouef Did a pretty good job, but other than that the movie's a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars bring back old school Astoria.......2007-04-18

This movie is great, It's nice to see so much of my childhood in it, I wish Astoria was still like this so all the yuppies, hipsters, & art geeks could get their faces smashed in every day

5 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane.......2007-04-18

This is a heart-gripping story of a writer going back into his tumultuous childhood in a rough Astoria-Queens neighborhood in the 1980's. When Dito returns home to try to help his ailing, estranged father, it stirs up a mix of memories surrounding friends, bullies, old girlfriends and loyalties. He's forced to face his feelings with his father and an old friend who ended up in prison. He also relives the death of a friend from Scotland who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I loved the story and the music brought up fond memories from my own childhood.

Gene Wilder takes his most unusual role, a naive 19th-century rabbi sent from his native Poland to the fledgling Jewish community in San Francisco, in this warm-hearted comic adventure. The trusting soul is easy prey for the con men and criminals who prey on the immigrants arriving in the Philadelphia port and the rabbi, beaten but unbowed, continues his trek West solo: broke, underequipped, and hopelessly lost. Harrison Ford, fresh from Star Wars, is the roguish outlaw who adopts the determined traveler and the two become unlikely friends as they make their way through one scrape after another. Wilder makes a sincere and sympathetic hero, his faith and courage seeing him through one crisis after another, and fresh-faced Ford makes an endearing scamp of a bank robber. The meandering adventure, overlong at two hours, takes its time as the duo traverses the gorgeous American countryside and end up in the bustling Barbary Coast San Francisco of the Gold Rush era. Legendary hard-edged action director Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly, The Dirty Dozen) brings a gentle touch and easygoing humor to this family-oriented adventure, but old habits die hard. While staying within PG parameters, Aldrich adds a little grit to the Old West fistfights and gunfights. --Sean Axmaker

Description

It's 1850 and new rabbi Avram Belinski sets out from Philadelphia toward San Francisco. Cowpoke bandit Tom Lillard hasn't seen a rabbi before. But he knows when one needs a heap of help. And getting this tenderfoot to Frisco in one piece will cause a heap of trouble - with the law, Native Americans and a bunch of killers. Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford are one feisty team as rabbi and rescuer in this rough-'n'-ready romp that rivals Wilder's earlier Blazing Saddles in Wild West hilarity. Director Robert Aldrich is a seasoned hand at blending roughhouse and laughter, as fans of his earlier The Dirty Dozen and The Longest Yard will attest. With a full posse of screen talents, The Frisco Kid rides tall in the comedy saddle. Director: Robert Aldrich Starring: Gene Wilder, Harrison Ford, Ramon Bieri

5 out of 5 stars This is a classic movie.......2007-05-30

This is one of those movies that is a wonderful story and presents some great insight into jewish history and customs. I have waited years for this to come out on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars The Critics Didn't Get It. So Who Listens to Critics?.......2007-03-29

The Frisco Kid, directed by Robert Aldrich, is the quirky inventive saga of a young Polish rabbi who is sent to America in 1850 to take over a congregation in San Francisco. Getting there proves to be quite a test of his stamina, his adaptability, and his religious faith. Gene Wilder's performance as Avram is a jaunty, sweet, and convincing triumph of comic bravado.

After docking in Philadelphia, the rabbi plays Good Samaritan to three nare-do-wells who later rob him and strand him in a strange land. Fortunately he comes upon some Amish farmers who give him shelter and money to resume his trek. After a brief stint working on the railroad, Avram meets Tommy Lillard (Harrison Ford), a bank robber with a heart of gold and a quick temper. The two team up and go ricocheting from one adventure to another -- an escape from a posse, a trial by fire at the hands of some Native American Indians, a visit to the brotherhood of silent monks, and two violent encounters with the bad boys who robbed Avram in Philadelphia.

Movie critics of the era panned the movie saying: "The pairing of Gene Wilder and a young Harrison Ford may sound intriguing, but this film is not. It's a startlingly unfunny comedy in which most of the jokes misfire and the evolution of the characters is forced and unbelievable. Wilder is a great comedic talent, but salvaging this material is beyond him."

Evidently they weren't looking for a good time. Talk of plot character 'evolution' should be worried about in film making classrooms. I think they should have actaully sat back and just enjoyed the romp.

The Frisco Kid is an offbeat comedy that manages to convey the sturdy faith of a believer. Avram will not travel on the Sabbath for any reason; he returns his share of the money from Lillard's bank robbery; he transmits the joy of Judaism to the Indians; and he agonizes over murdering a man in self-defense. Whereas this movie will probably not become a smash with the public, it is highly regarded for the religiously sensitive.

4 out of 5 stars Corny movie but a classic of sorts.......2007-01-22

Jewish boy rabbi (Gene Wilder) who can't make it in Poland (home) gets sent to San Francisco where the new Jewish congregation needs a rabbi. Of course he has to get from the East Coast to California - not an easy task in those days.

Enter Harrison Ford - bank robber and fast gunslinger. An unlikely duo make it across the continent to see Wilder married to his bethrothed and Ford as his best man.

A winner if you don't mind some schmaltz here and there. Quite entertaining especially (and probably mostly) if you are also Jewish.

4 out of 5 stars A nice film but slow moving.......2007-01-21

The characters are likable, there is some decent progression and growth seen over the course of the film, but only about half of the scenes are necessary. It seems as if they just wanted to give Gene Wilder a few more chances to be quirky. Gene is a funny guy, there is no doubt about that, but enough is enough!

The film is family friendly, except for a few instances of harsh language and violence, but it is really nothing compared to the sorts of things that get into theaters these days.

It is worth a look, but only if you're willing to deal with some pretty decent stretches of time when there is not a lot of progression in the story.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant diversion - a buddy road fish out of water film.......2007-01-20

This fish-out-of-water / buddy film is a comedy adventure story that has some roots in the early history of Jewish life in San Francisco in the 1850s. Nothing in the film is historical, but the facts are that the first Rabbi was brought there in that decade when the town was very young and developing rapidly.

Gene Wilder plays Avram Belinkski who is going the city on the Bay to become their Rabbi and to get a wife (part of his contract). Along the way he meets up with Tommy Lillard (Harrison Ford in an early role). Tommy is a scoundrel and that contrast with the Rabbi is part of the fun of the film. When Tommy robs a bank leaving Avram holding the horses (and without, of course, telling Avram), they have to outrun a posse for days. One of those days is the Sabbath and Avram won't ride his horse on the Sabbath to Tommy's consternation.

They also get captured by some Indians - very civilized Indians - and while things start badly, they end well. And, of course, they meet up with a tribe of very uncivilized white guys and it is the encounters with them that cause Avram his greatest crisis.

It is a pleasant movie with some funny moments, some touching moments, and is a pleasant diversion. Since it is from 1979, it is also a nice look back into the early careers of its stars.

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid may be the most beautiful and ambitious film that Sam Peckinpah ever made. The time is 1881. Powerful interests want New Mexico tamed for their brand of progress, and Sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) is commissioned to rid the territory of his old gunfighting comrades. He serves fair notice to William Bonney--Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson)--and his Fort Sumter cronies, but it's not in their nature, or his, to go quietly. Peckinpah's theme, more than ever, is the closing of the frontier and the nature of the loss that that entails. But this time his vision takes him beyond genre convention, beyond history and legend, to the bleeding heart of myth--and surely of himself.

This is one strange and original movie. In 1973 most American reviewers responded by panning it and deriding its director, whom they saw as having betrayed the promise of Ride the High Country, been swept up in his own cult of violence, and become incoherent as a storyteller. Coherence wasn't helped by MGM's cutting at least a quarter-of-an-hour out of the finished film and removing a bitter, retrospective prelude. Subsequent releases have restored a lot of material, and now there's more widespread appreciation of the depth and power of Peckinpah's achievement.

The cast, teeming with fine character actors, is extraordinary, making the gallery of frontier denizens vivid and resonant. Coburn's Garrett, a man who comes to loathe himself for his mission yet cannot abandon it, is the high-water mark of the actor's career. L.Q. Jones, Luke Askew, Harry Dean Stanton, Jack Elam, and Richard Bright create indelible moments, and Slim Pickens becomes the center of an unforgettably moving scene. The presence of Kristofferson (just starting out as an actor) and Bob Dylan (whose enigmatic role is nearly wordless) nudges us toward recognizing Old West outlawry as an early form of rock stardom--flesh-and-blood gods for a primitive society to feed on. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for 1988, "No, thanks" to 2005.......2007-04-11

Here's my favorite Peckinpah. I'm throwing my two-bits to the 1988 version, which is slower, more elegaic, quietly building power. Dylan's words over Slim Pickens' death scene make that moment too literal in the 2005 edition, the words repeating what we know (it's a great song on its own, separated from the scene). The 2005 version re-edits the scene of Garrett and the prostitutes in a heavy-handed, PC way, and snips out a great image of one of the women staring hard into the face of the uptight marshal (where we're trusted to draw our own conclusions). The film gains enormously from the drained color of the 1988 version, presenting a gray world of desolate choices between one kind of death and another. With the color re-saturated in the 2005 edition, the film tends toward a naturalistic western, which is not in keeping with the ennervated, intangible feeling of the violence. Plus the 2005 cut deletes the line Pat Garrett says to the marshal at the end, "What you want, and what you get, are two different things." The way that line is said makes it just as compelling as the more famous one from "Ride the High Country," "I just want to enter my house justified."

On its own, I did like the added scene of Garrett at home with his wife. In a minute or two you could get a whole picture of their marriage. But, even so, I didn't feel it was necessary to the film; you can surmise without it that Garrett has sought respectability by settling down, the kind of woman he would marry and the degree of honor (albeit his womanizing) he would bring to that pact. It is still a very good scene, it makes all those qualities particular, but in my view it does not justify re-editing the film or really belong with the mood and structure of the whole. It could have made an extra instead.

5 out of 5 stars Pat and Billy.......2007-03-09

I was thrilled to see the original sound track with Knocking on Heavens door came with the DVD version.
I had purchased the VCR version some years ago and was disappointed to find it had been cut out.
I found how the movie was made was just as interesting as well.
For those who like real grit in a western this is a must have for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars "How's Jesus look to you now Bob?".......2006-12-25

This is a classic western and one of Sam Peckinpah's greatest. I found the dialouge and the chemistry between James Coburns Pat Garrett and Kris Kristoffersons Billy the Kid to be mesmerizing. Kristofferson was very young in this part and fairly inexperienced as an actor but it doesn't show one bit. The costumes and the period are portrayed perfectly. The characters are dirty, crash, and wild. There are many colorful characters portrayed by a lot of famous character actors that you have probably seen in a ton of movies. Slim Pickens is also here in a brief but memorable role. The Kid and Garretts friendship is what holds the movie together and even though they don't show their early outlaw years together they don't have to. You can feel that the two have a long relationship and that their friendship runs very deep.

Check this movie out if you want to see a great western and just a plain great piece of movie making.

3 out of 5 stars The Wild West in G Major.......2006-12-14

Bob Dylan's soundtrack for this movie is one of the best from the 1970s and includes one of the best dramatic pop songs of all time, 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'. This is good because the music plays a central role in the film, even starring many poignant scenes.

Most of all, the music is perfect for setting the mood of ironic ambivalence that was so dominant in the '70s and that filmmaker Sam Peckinpah so masterfully presents here. Almost all of Bob Dylan's work is in the key of G Major, which is a pleasant, accommodating chord. Juxtaposed with the American Wild West at its wildest with the story of Billy the Kid, the result is a weird state of accepting injustice. You watch as Billy steals a thoughtful man's horse and feel satisfied; a man slaps a woman and you don't really care; you witness three murders and feel bushed, quite as if such action doesn't energize or enliven.

This mood is cherished by many and the films of the '70s are quite popular as a result. If you prefer to keep that kind of drama on an energizing level, stick with 'Shane', 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance', or even 'Young Guns'.

1 out of 5 stars revolting prelude.......2006-11-26

I hate this film and "The Ballad of Cable Hoge," because of its depiction of animal cruelty. This happens just at the prelude of both films.

The Doctor, the Tornado & the Kentucky Kid is another motorcycle-racing feast served up by Mark Neale, the director of Faster. Where the earlier film focused on an entire season of MotoGP racing, DTK limits its coverage to the Red Bull Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, California, held over the weekend of July 8-10, 2005. This was the seventh and most hotly anticipated race of the '05 season, not only because Laguna Seca is one of MotoGP's most technically demanding and physically intimidating race courses, but also because it was the first MotoGP race held on American soil since 1994 (evidence of the sport's European emphasis and the efforts of corporate sponsors like Red Bull to popularize MotoGP in the U.S.). Like Faster, this film and its DVD bonus features are aimed squarely at established fans of MotoGP, but potential converts will find plenty to enjoy in Neale's comprehensive coverage of the 32-lap race. And, as any fan can tell you, the title refers to the nicknames of the riders who were key figures on that sunny afternoon: American Nicky "The Kentucky Kid" Hayden on his lightning-fast #69 Repsol Honda; American Colin "The Texas Tornado" Edwards on his #5 Camel Yamaha; and the Italian reigning champion, Valentino Rossi (Edwards' teammate), on his #46 Camel Yamaha.

American challenger John "Hopper" Hopkins is also prominently featured on his #21 Rizia Suzuki, but DTK doesn't flinch from the harsher aspects of a motorsport where success is never guaranteed. Thanks to the film's all-angle coverage of on-track rivalries, it's clear that Edwards and Rossi were the race's undeniable highlight, battling ferociously in the final laps while Hayden was in the lead. With celebrities in the crowd (including cycle fans Brad Pitt and Adrien Brody) and racing enthusiast Ewan McGregor once again providing dramatic narration, Neale's film suffers from occasional lapses in hi-def image quality (owing in part to video-feed static and the unavoidably harsh contrasts of sunny weather), but interviews and voice-overs from the riders keep things interesting from start to finish, along with a throttle-roaring 5.1 Surround soundtrack (with pulsing techno music by TomandAndy) that's the next best thing to being there. The Ultimate Collector's Edition has 11 additional scenes on disc 1 (including longer interviews and highlights from the 2006 Red Bull U.S. GP), and disc 2 consists entirely of "Interactive Racing" clips, allowing viewers to watch three climactic segments of the 2005 race from multiple angles. Switching between several onboard cameras is the closest that most of us will ever get to the sheer thrill of MotoGP, and that makes DTK a must-have DVD for race fans around the world. --Jeff Shannon

This is a must see for anyone following the MotoGP - the insights are priceless and the footage nothing that has ever been seen before - ALL I CAN SAY IS ENJOY...

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-14

Great DVD, good if you are into Moto GP then you will like it. Not much from Rossi though.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-04-05

A fantastic recounting of the first american moto gp in years. The track footage is second to none, and even includes a bit of history. This is all about coming back to Laguna Seca, the race and the racers who raced it.

5 out of 5 stars The Doctor, the Tornado, and the Kentucky Kid.......2007-03-22

This was an outstanding accounting of the race. I know, because I was there. The program captured all of the complexity, engineering and courage needed to compete, and the additional CD with the recordings of the bike cameras was fabulous.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, nothing special.......2007-03-09

If you already saw Faster by Mark Neale, (which is excellent), this is a bit disappointing. Interviews are OK, but the race wasnt one of the better MotoGP races that year.
