The Joan Crawford Collection brings together a potent group of films from Crawford's career renaissance: her Warner Bros. run of the late 1940s, beginning with Mildred Pierce. Four of the titles are from that heated, noirish streak, including Crawford's 1945 Oscar-winning turn in Mildred, a great Hollywood example of an actress's persona meeting the zeitgeist moment. In this adaptation of the James M. Cain novel, Crawford plays a sacrificing mother perfectly willing to claw her way to success for the sake of her ingrate daughter. Michael Curtiz directed, snapping Crawford out of a long career slide.
Humoresque (1946) was promptly given the top-drawer treatment, and it's a truly epic melodrama about a restless society woman who takes up the cause of a young violinist (John Garfield) from the slums. Possessed (1947) gave Crawford a thorough workout as a woman in complete obsessive breakdown from various romantic traumas. What Crawford lacks in subtlety she makes up for in sheer will, which suits the character well (and brought another best actress Oscar nomination). The Damned Don't Cry (1950) is a film noir smash-up, with Crawford as a low-rent dame who brazens her way into becoming a fur-lined mobster's moll (it was loosely inspired by the Bugsy Siegel-Virginia Hill story). It's overripe but entertaining.
1939's The Women, an MGM picture, doesn't fit the mood of the collection, although it has its fans. George Cukor directed this catty version of the Clare Booth Luce play, which has an all-female ensemble cast; Crawford is in very good form as a bad girl. The movie's reputation is somewhat beyond its actual witchy charm. (Packaging gaffe: the photo on the back cover is from Seven Women.) DVD extras tend toward smallish documentaries, save the absorbing 90-minute career profile The Ultimate Movie Star on the Mildred Pierce disc, an even-handed study that includes frank revelations from director-lover Vincent Sherman and the "wire hangers" story from adopted daughter Christina. Sherman contributes a commentary on The Damned Don't Cry. --Robert Horton
Description
The Joan Crawford Collection features classics from the star whose career spanned more than 40 years. "I never go out unless I look like Joan Crawford the movie star. If you want to see the girl next door, go next door." - Joan Crawford
Customer Reviews:
you don't need any wire hangers to enjoy this set!.......2007-06-29
Fans of the divine Joan Crawford are sure to enjoy this great-value DVD set from Warners which packages five of Crawford's best films.
From the outer box artwork to the extra features, a lot of care and attention has clearly been spent on this set, and we are certainly lucky in having it so beautifully presented. The emphasis is very much on Joan's years as a film noir femme fatale, with The Damned Don't Cry, Possessed and Humoresque all from Crawford's glory days at Warner Brothers. Mildred Pierce (Keepcase), her first Oscar-winning role; plus her catty turn in The Women (Keepcase) are also here. Each disc is housed in it's own sturdy plastic Amaray case.
THE DAMNED DON'T CRY - Joan Crawford plays a gangster's moll who climbs up from the gutter only to discover that life at the top can be twice as dangerous. Extra features include the new featurette "The Crawford Formula: Real and Reel", audio commentary with director Vincent Sherman, and the trailer.
POSSESSED - Love takes a deadly turn in this noir drama co-starring Van Heflin and Raymond Massey. Crawford plays Louise Howell, a woman driven to desperate measures when her boyfriend marries another woman. Extra features include audio commentary by Dr. Drew Casper, featurette "The Quintessential Film Noir", and the trailer.
HUMORESQUE - Crawford gives one of her most nuanced performances as jaded socialite Helen Wright, whose love affair with an up-and-coming violin virtuoso sends her to the brink of madness. Extra features include featurette "The Music of Humoresque", and the trailer.
MILDRED PIERCE - From James M. Cain's novel comes the legendary potboiler about a devoted mother (Crawford) and her ungrateful, hellion of a daughter (Ann Blyth). Extra features include the movie-length TCM documentary "The Ultimate Movie Star", and a trailer gallery.
THE WOMEN - In director George Cukor's screen version of the Claire Booth Luce comedy, Joan Crawford plays a hard-boiled mantrap who moves in on Norma Shearer's husband. Fabulous comic turns from Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland, and Paulette Goddard. Extra features include alternate B&W fashion show sequence, and trailers.
Even at it's full list-price, buying this box set is cheaper than getting each DVD individually. If you love Joan Crawford, this will be a mandatory addition to your movie collection.
WHERE'S THE SECOND BOX SET??????.......2007-06-27
They can release Trog and Reunion in France, but not A Woman's Face, Possessed (1931), Sadie McKee, Torch Song, Our Dancing Daughters and Flamingo Road? Come on, Warner Brothers! Release another box set of Joan!
Fabulous as always.......2007-01-11
Wonderful collection of some of Joan's movies. Hours of pleasure watching them. Highly recommended.
Gothic Diversion.......2007-01-03
Put this collection on during a stormy day, but keep at least one light on and lock the tranquilizers in the medicine cabinet. Joan's performances are riveting and her face was made for monochrome. Watch "Humoresque" first. The director used the pounding piano and searing violin to propel the film but employed Oscar Levant as the comic foil so the film doesn't collapse under its own weight. In "Possessed", you'll see Joan on the verge of campiness, although she apparently visited insane asylum inmates in order to verify her facial expressions. "The Women" is a fast, furious "Sex and the City"-like farce. Buy this.
FInally Joan gets the treatment she deserves!!!.......2006-12-11
I am SO glad Joan gets her own box set, although I am miffed that Bette has a second one while poor Joan still only has one!
I would Love to see a second box set and even a third. Joan made some fun, campy films, but she always rose above the material.
I'd love to see Johnny Guitar, Flamingo Road, Torch Song and A Woman's Face in a set. And another with Female on the Beach, Autumn Leaves, Susuan and God and When Ladies Meet.
This set has The Women, which is the campiest and most quoted film. The "clever" plot involves a story devoid of men, but it is ALL the women talk about. Norma Sheaer, who deserves her OWN box set, is WONDEFUL in this film. Joan has a supporting role and she chews every inch of scenery she is in! Humoresque is my least favorite role. Joan falls for John Garfield and throws her life away for him. So NOT our Joanie! Possessed is OK. The role was written for Bette Davis and it is interesting to see Joan do the role while imaginging how Bette would OVERPLAY it while Joan does it more subtley. Now, The Damned Don't Cry is PURE CRAWFORD!! Woman claws her way to the top and uses every trick in the book to stay there. This should have been in a box set iwth Torch Song, Female on the Beach and Johnny Guitar. TOUGH "Don't F with me fellas!!!" Crawford! PLEASE release the second box set in early 2007!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Code Lyoko, the most interesting aninmated show in like 3 years!.......2006-08-04
Code Lyoko and South Park are the only aninmated TV series I watch now,I used to watch all sorts of different cartoons such as DragonBall Z,BeyBlade,Tenchi,XMen and so on,so forth, but i got bored of them.I am 13 and in Nov 06 I`ll be 14,so it ain`t really any suprise that I have lost alot of interest in anaimation series, and only two series I actually enjoy.
Anyways Code Lyoko is about four teenagers that attend a boarding school called Kadic High that have knowledge of a secret supercomputer, maybe THE most advanced super computer yet,it is in an abandoned factory down the road from the school.
This supercomputer has everything including great speed processing and graphics and has connections to 3 "scanners" aswell as having the ability to go back in time to about a day,the parallel universe of "Lyoko" is perhaps its most mouth dropping feature. The four teenagers that are recognised by this incredible computer actually have the ability to go to Lyoko via the scanners.
But there is two known "inhabitants" in Lyoko,Aelita a virtual teenage girl and a "virus" called X.A.N.A.,XANA is the antagonist and can unleach really hell on the planet,he can take control of satelites and even certain humans,in Lyoko he has an army of virtual monsters that are guarding "towers" in which Aelita can enter and erase his attacks and saving anyone or anything that was infected by him,XANA is the "unseen" antagonist, but whatever he infects always shows his symbol which is like a bullseye that can be seen on computers and other technology, peoples eyes and on his army of monsters.
The four teenagers are:
Jeremie:A whizz at the computer and a capable programmer and hacker,he is also a capable mechanic and has feelings for the virtual girl,Aelita whom he and his friends are trying to save from Lyoko and some way or another, materielise her.He is an academic genius,in which he can complete any exam within short time.He is not exactly a nerd or geek as ho doesn`t always speak like one,he has his jokes and stuff like that.
Yumi:A girl who is of Japanese parents, she is the oldest and tallest of the group and is responceble for most of the decisions made in Lyoko, she is in love with Ulrich, another member of the group,in Lyoko she wears a geisha style attire and her weapon of choice is a metal fan that can cut through XANA`s monsters and has Telekenisis abilities.
Ulrich:A teen boy in the group who is the silent-but-dangerous member,he has a short temper and has actually been discharged from the group once for going behind their backs and activiating a "return trip" so he can get the winning lottery numbers for Yumi`s parents to stop them leaving as he is in love with Yumi, but Yumi, like Jeremie and the others(Odd and Aelita) were very mad at him and kicked him out,he got back in the group for helping them save the day in Lyoko, that is in the episode "The Chips are Down" in season 2.In Lyoko,Ulrich wears a ninja style attire complete with katana sword, headband and athletic abilities like jumping high and flipping.
Odd:The least-serious member of the group, even though he`s serious when needed,he is the comic relief of the group who always makes jokes about the groups rival,Sissi who has an undying crush on Ulrich and hates the group.Odd is a glutton, but always manages to stay thin and is the most enthusiastic Lyoko warrior in the group. In Lyoko he wears a cat style atture and has 10-20 laser arrows to kill XANA monsters.
well seeya.

Find more of what was needed in The Exorcist here........2007-05-28
I enjoyed this film a lot more than any or all of the Exorcist films, primarily because it tends to stick a little closer to the facts in the case (yes it still throws hollywood tricks in to make it more exciting) and details more of the innner life of the priests. Timothy Dalton is great and his camaraderie with the other priest in the story is terrific. When I saw any version of The Exorcist I was always fascinated by the priests and wanted more of their stories and their struggles. This movie gives you more of that and shows them realistically faltering on their own to learn about and perform the exorcism rite. No exorcism film comes closer to the real facts (internet study shows it was not quite so fantastic as this film or any makes out) or is more entertaining than this one.
Possessed, DVD review.......2007-01-12
I purchased "Possessed" in DVD format to replace the old VHS tape my wife would watch EVERY Halloween season! It is a true story, which makes it all the more scary! Everybody needs to watch this movie at least once.
0 STARS: Unconvincing, and that's being nice about this garbage........2006-12-23
"Possessed" is an unconvincing portrayal of an exorcism that apparently occurred some years ago and was the basis for the classic and seminal demonic possession movie known as "The Exorcist". The acting is very poor in this movie and the movie fails to deliver the goods.
The movie, "Possessed", lacks the substance, style and atmosphere necessary to make any kind of horror movie effective, especially one about possession. The action in this movie comes off as artificial and lacking the essence of the horror associated with demonic possession. By contrast, "The Exorcist" thrusts the viewer into the world of demonic possession and, as a result, the viewer becomes emersed in the story and can actually feel the horror and pain associated with this subject matter. "Possessed" tackles a very difficult issue and does a very poor job of portraying demonic possession and exorcism.
In short, "Possessed" is lifeless and has no spirit which is necessary to present the horrors and trappings of demonic possession and exorcisms. For good movies on demonic possession, I recommend "The Exorcist", "The Exorcist III", "Amityville II: The Possession" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", especially "The Exorcist" based on the novel by William Peter Blatty.
Possessed will possess you while and after you watch it........2006-12-14
Possessed is not just another Catholic scandel. I am not going to spoil the silm by delving into the intracacies of the plot, but take my word for it, this is a must if you are to understand what innicents have been subjected to by those sworn to protect and provide for the.
SCARY and Thought-provoking.......2004-10-31
I absolutely thought this was a great movie. It was scary yet it had a real feel to it. I think Timothy Dalton is a great actor and he did a fantastic job with the role of the tormented Priest. His remembrances of his World War II experiences were particularly moving. I liked this movie alot...was surprised at how moving I found it. Worth a watch.

bargain for the price.......2004-01-08
Some good forgotton erotic movies from the seventies and early eighties all movies are pretty good and run for approximately 90 minutes. Two movies only had partial nudity but were still entertaining Secret of satin blues and Nea but on the whole a bargain price especially when considering the postage.
Where're the original soundtracks?.......2003-05-03
A good show case of vintage French erotic movies. They might have raised many eyebrows in their days, but seem pretty tamed and dated compared to today's erotica. Too bad Pathfinder couldn't give us the original French soundtracks. The dubbed dialogues sound pretty lame and you just can't help but feel you're missing out on that "French" artsy quality. Recommended only for those with a nostalgia for yesterday's European erotica.
NO FRECH, AND NO SEX!.......2003-04-24
This product is not what it purports to be--there is no French language sound track on 90 percent of the movies--so what you get is a french movie dubbed in English, which drives me mad, mad, mad. And, this leaves only the sex, which is about five to ten seconds in the middle or the end of the each movie. So, even at very fast spead, you are wasting a half hour. So, the whole package is a real waste of money. A complete waste. There is nothing good about it. No Frech and No Sex.

The opening shots of Possessed achieve their goal: it is startling to see Joan Crawford wandering around without makeup, her hair drawn plainly back, in the early dawn of a grungily real location. Her unbalanced character, Louise, has been traumatized and must now recount her nightmare, in true film noir fashion, to a questioning psychoanalyst.
Possessed has an abundance of noir atmosphere (everything gets to be as shadowy as the inside of Louise's brain) and a full ration of Crawford at her most florid. The story is a wild ride: an invalid wife, a lonely widower, a daughter resentful of former nurse Louise's new status in the household. Plus there's the true crazy-making love of Louise's life, an engineer (Van Heflin) whose heart is as dry as his manner is breezy ("When a woman kisses me, Louise, she has to take pot luck"). The film's overripe writing is balanced by Joseph Valentine's sharp-angled photography, to say nothing of the vectors of Joan Crawford's sharp-angled face. As a companion piece to Crawford's Mildred Pierce performance, this one takes Mildred to her extreme--single-minded obsession and derangement. What Crawford lacked in subtlety she made up for in sheer commitment, which perhaps suits this character very well. --Robert Horton
Description
She loves him when he goes away for months. She loves him when he refuses to marry her. But when callow David Sutton chooses to marry someone else, Louise Howell's love for him takes a darker turn. Give her a gun and she'll love him to death. Joan Crawford reteams with producer Jerry Wald of her Academy Award winning Mildred Pierce and claims a 1947 Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of tempestuous, mentally unstable Louise. ??I love you? is such an inadequate way of saying I love you, Louise says. It doesn't quite describe how much it hurts sometimes. With Crawford at her film-noir-queen best, be assured it hurts so good.

Possessed.......2007-06-25
A dark character study told in flashbacks, "Possessed" finds Joan Crawford doing what she does best: acting unhinged. Joan earned another Oscar nomination for it, but the supporting players also elevate the proceedings, primarily Heflin and Massey, both first-rate actors. The young Geraldine Brooks makes a radiant debut playing Massey's grown daughter.
Another magnificent performance for Miss Crawford.......2007-05-27
Hollywood is no longer churning out excellent professional actresses such as Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Lana Turner, Dhianne Carroll (I may have spelled her name wrong) Dorthy Dandridge, and many others to say the least.
I have always loved watching Joan Crawford movies. In Possessed she played the psychotic role of Louise, a woman who is obsessed with a man named David, who plays on her emotions, and then tires of her and treats her like nothing more than a fly on his shoulder. His attitude towards her causes tragic results.
why i am obsessed with joan crawford.......2007-01-29
there is only one reason why a framed picture of joan crawford sits on my bedside.. she is the greatest actress of all time.. Not just in the camp way that most people like her - she could so become a character - it is her presence - the very fabric of her being..
'possessed' is one of the finest examples of crawford the actress - she is so off the wall in this movie - and yet somehow we identify with her - love can do this to a person..
This is also one of Van Heflin's finer moments in cinema... Buy this and Mildred Pierce and have a festival..
Good melodrama, mediocre print.......2006-06-17
The narrative flow of this film is hampered by the device of returning repeatedly to the past, but there are interesting elements, including 4 characters who can't connect with each other. There are campy moments along with more straight-ahead scenes. The dialogue is better than average. Crawford is good, and her dry-mouth effort to talk in the depth of her character's illness foreshadows the way she played the end of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" However, the printed used to prepare the DVD was not in good condition. There are a number of places where you see faded blacks and streaks. At one point, for a couple of minutes, you see little ovals of light all over the screen, almost like reflections from a sparkly bracelet. It's a shame Warner chose not to offer a restored version.
Much better than her other Possessed............2006-04-24
This movie is wonderful. Crawford in my opinion gives one her best performances in this movie. The camera work and locations were right on target to portray her descending madness. This is one of her films you don't want to miss.....

Description
Eerie horror outing set in France in the Middle Ages, where demented tyrant Field Marshal de Lancre (Paul Naschy) seeks a magical "philosopher's stone" while torturing the denizens of a small village. Shocks, savagery and atmosphere run wild in this production that's definitely not for the meek.

Description
An exciting trilogy of horror and mayhem from Charlie Band's new company Forbidden Worlds, "The Possessed" features tales of revenge, possession, and resurrection.
Customer Reviews:
What posessed me?.......2005-04-04
This DVD has three short films about demonic posession; The Devil's Spell, Witches' Dolls, and Resurrection of the Damned.
The Devil's Spell: A blatant rip-off of the first Night of the Demons film about a group of college kids meeting in a house and one by one being turned into demons as they are slain in silly ways. There's not even a hint of skin in the one sex scene - in which continuity goes out the window. Even the boom mike comes into view at the beginning of the film
Witches' Dolls: Is an interesting (at times) story of an elderly woman who arrives in a guest house and who then proceeds to trick the guests into giving her their souls.
Resurrection of the Damned: this is, in a sense the biggest rip-off of the bunch. It is a edited down version of the 1992 film "Netherworld" - it's exactly that same film, only with large pieces removed to make for a version that fits in with the format of this DVD.
Netherworld/Resurrection of the Damned is an odd story of a guy visiting the deep south looking for his dead father. The odd thing is that some of the people in this, when they are 'posessed' they become colourful feathered birds!
What the....?.......2005-03-22
Let me begin by saying that I am a fan of Charles Band and his Full Moon productions (when, oh when, will we see those on DVD?). Having said that, I picked up "The Possesed" based on his name alone. Anyone who has seen any of the Full Moon movies knows that you are not getting A+ stuff here. They are campy, fairly low budget flicks shot for straight-to-video. Nevertheless, I enjoyed them quite a bit.
This piece of film sludge has NOTHING in common (except the budget, perhaps) with Charles Band's earlier works. There is absolutely no redeeming qualities to this poorly worked trilogy. The acting can only aspire to be pure dreck. There aren't even any good sex scenes to make up for the rest. This is an hour and a half of your life that you will NEVER get back! Avoid it at all costs.

Customer Reviews:
Nicollete Sheridan stars in this flick!.......2005-08-10
A woman is murdered and the woman that receives her eyes in a transplant has visions of what happened and decides to solve the case and help the dead woman's family get justice. Nicolette is hot so I didn't mind it, the story was okay.
Look who is the star.......2005-07-13
Nicollete Sheridan is the star, that should tell you something right off. This is a poor, B-rate thriller about a woman who has visions of a murder after and eye transplant. Nothing here is special or scary and the acting is second rate
Un-original........2005-07-02
This movie is a rip-off of THE EYE and BODY PARTS.
Desprete Housewives star is Desperate for a better role and only the desprete enough to follow her career will be despret enough to WANT to see it.
Not Bad...very interesting plot..........2005-06-02
So why the 3 stars...well, this film was pretty good, had a least one big name star in the cast, but it did seem a bit "Monday Night Movie-ish" but that is ok. This appears to be one of those movies that you do not hear a lot of...if anything!! The story was interesting, and it did keep me interested in what it had to offer. Not a bad effort in the least!
Not too bad.......2005-05-30
I think this movie is an okay choice if you run out mega movies to watch. Don't expect too much though. It looks like something you'll find on A&E channel.
The movie is about this woman who had a cornea transplant from a dead donor and she ended up seeing how this donor was killed. From then on you can pretty much guess the rest of the story.
So the plot is average. Acting has its good moments for a B movie but it got worse towards the end. Editing, script, sound, camera, special effects are nothing to speak about.
AND IT'S NOT A CREEPY movie as the name suggested.. just so you know.
As I said, rent it only if you have nothing good to watch.

Customer Reviews:
I just wasted my money!.......2003-10-03
This French farce could have been an exceptional erotic film, however they chose to go soft on the beatings and sex scenes. Instead they have "hippie" looking people with huge crotch bushes dancing around the fire someplace in the (Spanish) desert! Nothing remotely erotic or exceptionally worth watching. The sex scenes are really lame as you never see any body parts of the men, and rarely is there anyone doing anything remotely daring or exciting. There are some nude women dancing around in various sequences, but when the big moment comes to brutally "whip" the star, its a phony whipping sequence and they show nothing! I highly recommend "The Story of O" or "The Image" as alternative films of this genre that really deliver the goods!
