Set in Harlem and New Orleans in 1955, this supernatural thriller stirred a brief controversy when released in 1987 because some scenes featuring Lisa Bonet (then a popular cast member of The Cosby Show) were considered too sexually explicit to be rated R. The edited material was restored for the unrated video release, and the movie now makes a fitting double bill with Fallen, with its similar plot about a sullen detective (Mickey Rourke) who is hired to find a missing person by a shady client with pointy fingernails named Louis Cyphre (Lucifer, get it?). Rourke's investigation leads him into an underworld of voodoo and forbidden desires, and as the mystery unfolds director Alan Parker fills every scene with conspicuous style and atmospheric excess, compelling critic Pauline Kael to observe that, "Parker simply doesn't have the gift of making evil seductive, and he edits like a flasher." And yet, this movie does cast a spell of its own (Roger Ebert's review was considerably more charitable), and the performances of Rourke, De Niro, Bonet, and Charlotte Rampling are well suited to the ominous mood. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Now there are better vodoo movies like Skeleton Key.......2007-06-13
I bought this movie for two reasons. Robert de niro and its excellent reviews. But in the entire movie Robert de niro has only 3 or 4 appearances which was very disappointing. Beside that i think may be the movie was one of its kind back then, but now there are lot better vodoo movies than Angel Heart. Two stars for Mickey Rourke. He is awesome. Rent it but don't buy it.
Elevator Going Down.......2007-06-09
I saw this and thought it was one of the "style over substance" movies that were really beginning to emerge strongly back in the late 80s, though it was still fairly creepy. Nevertheless I've never really forgotten it, and was eager to see it again when I found it on DVD for $5.
It's 1955 [I TOTALLY did not remember it as taking place in the 50s] and Mickey Rourke is Harold Angel, low-rent private detective. He is hired by Robert DeNiro as Louis Cyphere to find a singer called Johnny Favorite. He has vanished, and DeNiro wants to know if he's still alive.
Already one can tell that this is a modern noir, what with the low-rent detective and all the shadows in the photography. Rourke finds that Favorite was checked out of the hospital he was supposedly in, and hunts down the doctor who was in charge. He interrogates him, then leaves for a while, and when he comes back the man is dead. So he begins to think that someone is following him, killing the people he talks to after he finds them. Upon hearing this, DeNiro ups the price to $5,000. Rourke's search leads him down to New Orleans, where he witnesses some creepy voodoo rituals and gets involved with the beautiful Lisa Bonet. Finally his search ends with a surprising revelation that really ruins his day.
If you've never seen it, that's all I can tell you. If you like spooky movies with lots of atmosphere [it's not really scary, just very creepy all the way through], you should definitely check this out. It has good performances, a fairly tight script, and a good twist at the end. Okay, bye!
SPOILERS > > >
Okay, now for the rest of us who have seen it... I was interested to see how this would hold up after all these years, and particularly after knowing what was coming. I'm pleased to say that--it does! In fact, it may have a little more power and poignancy, as if you DON'T know what's happening you have to look back on everything, and it seems to me that your real satisfaction comes from looking back on the movie afterward. If you do know what's coming, you can admire DeNiro's devilish [arr! arr!] sadism in making Harry hunt himself, and have a little more feeling for the clueless Harry as his blasé world weariness is slowly drained away and he begins to really panic over what's going on.
DeNiro was even better than I remembered [aside from looking HOT and exuding that whole `menacing mobster' thing that I like], especially after you know the story and realize that he is just toying with Harry from the start. His whole air of amused sadism and absolute still confidence really works. That said, in retrospect I think the movie kind of overdid the whole "I am Satan" thing with the extended shots of his pentagram ring and long fingernails and cane and throne and especially the "this egg represents the soul"...CHOMP scene. I can see how those things might seem evocative if you were just trying to piece this whole thing together, but even so I think it could have done with less of them. There's a note in the IMDb trivia that says DeNiro was doing an imitation of Martin Scorsese in his performance, but it doesn't say where that information came from. Anyway, good one Robert!
Mickey Rourke is also fine. He handles his role without a hitch, but I think a lot of the mileage he gets out of it is due to the script and plot. Lisa Bonet is also on hand, presented in a very sexual way from the very beginning, when she appears in a wet t-shirt with her nipples out to HERE. And Charlotte Rampling is very well deployed as an imperious fortune teller, which works, as she seems so otherworldly anyway.
One of the things I remember from watching it the first time is--well, Lavern Baker's recording of "Soul On Fire," which has become a staple of my record collection--but also the extensive shots of FANS. At first I thought that was just a somewhat arbitrary piece of atmosphere, but in retrospect I think the fans receive a loving close-up [as opposed to just being around, as they are throughout] when Harry loses consciousness and becomes the person who is killing all of his informants. I would have to watch it again to make sure--which I'm not going to do for a while--but look for that and see what you think. My first clue about that was the shot showing the fan reversing direction shortly before Mickey finds the dead doctor.
I watched this with my boyfriend, who had never seen it, and he figured out the twist about five minutes before it is officially revealed, which I think is perfect--you figure it out on your own, which is fun, just before it is revealed, so you don't have too long of knowing the secret while the movie thinks you're still in the dark, which is annoying.
Anyway, it's still good! If you're interested in seeing how well it's constructed and admiring the performances in a way you can't really when you don't know what's going on, I'd definitely recommend giving this one another look.
Why Put A Spoiler In The Amazon Synop?.......2007-05-04
Angel Heart is one of the best morphs of the picture genres of drama and horror on the market. Alan Parker does an excellent job with a film that is pure story telling, in the tradition of Polanski and Friedkin before him. Its a film that rivets you with excellent cinematography, acting, and clues big and small.
One of the major attractions to watching Angel Heart is following along with Mickey Rourke's Harry Angel in piecing together all the clues. This viewing attraction will most likely be amiss for new viewers because Amazon placed a major spoiler in the synop.
Why? Two thumbs down to Amazon for revealing "the ending" to a great story that would otherwise send chills down your spine.
One of the best horror movies..........2007-03-03
Angel Heart combines beautiful atmospheric cinematography, an unsettling soundtrack, and a well-crafted plot with great acting by Rourke and De Niro to create a real masterpiece of the horror genre. The use of the occult is very creepy and keeps the suspense building, without ever becoming cheesy or overblown as is the case with so many horror movies. De Niro projects a truly sinister presence, and the interplay between his character Louis Cyphre and Rourke's boyish Harold Angel is brilliant. Lisa Bonet adds a smouldering performance as a nubile young voodoo priestess, and has a particularly memorable scene with Rourke (fyi, the special edition dvd is the full, unrated cut of the film, despite being tagged in the description with an "R" rating). All in all, one of the best, and worth repeat viewings- do yourself a favor and add it to your collection!
Very Creepy.......2007-01-20
Here's a movie that combines suspense, creepiness, and violence. It's shortly after World War II. A New York detective goes in search of a missing person, on behalf of a mysterious client who claims that this person owes him a huge debt. The detective makes his way to New Orleans, visiting a world that is now mostly gone. Like Chinatown, this movie takes you to places that you never imagined at the beginning. The end is unforgettable. And the music is not only good, but enhances the peculiar, atmospheric quality of this strange film.

A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.
This one's got Christopher Walken in its favor, starring as the Angel Gabriel, who's really mad at God for allowing humans into heaven (because, you see, humans have souls and angels don't, and God plays favorites). Gabriel takes his anger out on the human race, coming to Earth to capture the soul of the most evil human alive in an effort to defeat the "good" angels that remain in God's good graces. One of the good angels is played by Eric Stoltz, who captures the evil soul before Walken does and transfers it into the body of a little girl. Are you with us so far? Don't worry if you're not, because writer-director Gregory Widen filled The Prophecy with so many wild ideas that he didn't bother to connect them to a coherent plot.
Add Viggo Mortensen as the devil and Elias Koteas as a priest-turned detective who's tracking Walken and it's clear that Widen was attempting something ambitious here. He nearly succeeded, since The Prophecy jumpstarts its heaven-and-hell rivalry with enough action, humor, and intelligence to make the movie sufficiently entertaining. It was enjoyable enough to entice Walken back for the sequel, so if you're into this kind of thing, this one's a keeper. --Jeff Shannon

It's a Theological War Film.......2007-06-10
Horror? Bah, I say. It asks the question "Why does God love us the most, and why doesn't he love the angels as much?" Of course, you don't really get an answer, because who can really know the mind of God? Christopher Walken is fabulous (this actually might be his iconic role, once we look back on everything). Well worth the time and the thought. Highest rating.
Check Your Haloes At The Door..........2007-05-24
Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone, Sleepy Hollow, Pulp Fiction) is the angel Gabriel, here on earth in mortal form, in order to find and acquire the darkest soul to ever live. Walken is his usual mixture of good / evil / funny / scary. He plays Gabe like a cool hitman w/ angelic abilities. Virginia Madsen (Candyman) is believable in her schoolteacher role, as is Elias Koteas as the ex-priest turned cop, Tom Dagget. We even get Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction, The Fly 2) as the angel Simon, and Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan) as Gabriel's human slave! Even Amanda Plummer (another Pulp Fiction alum) pops up as a servant for Gabriel's use! If that's not enough, we even have Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn himself) as satan! All of these folks combine to make THE PROPHECY a classic! The little girl, Mary (Moriah Silver Dove Snyder) is convincingly innocent, and NOT a whiny brat or a trash-talking smarta$$, breaking w/ the usual hollywood idea of childhood as a time for being utterly annoying! How refreshing! Spiritual themes like God, heaven, hell, angels, immortality, souls, etc. are treated w/ respect and dignity, while keeping things exciting, frightening, and mysterious. I don't think I've seen a movie do that since THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN back in the 70s! Highly recommended...
witty, intriguing.......2007-01-19
Christopher Walkin was made to play Gabriel. He has some great dialogue to work with. The plot is riveting. Viggo was amazing as Satan.
Great movie, transfer not so good.......2006-11-26
I won't go into the movie's worth as entertainment here - suffice to say that I think it's awesome and well worth 5 stars. But in this review I'm focusing on the technical aspects which I feel detract from the DVD.
This DVD (ASIN: 6305268819) features a transfer that is known as 'matted widescreen' which works fine on smaller 4:3 TVs, but which looks awful on larger screen or widescreen TVs. I believe that every DVD today should be made in 'anamorphic widescreen' format so that the image is enhanced for viewing on a larger screen. If it's not then I think that the low image quality should be clearly marked in some way, as the lack of an anamorphic transfer makes a big difference in quality. In the case of this particular movie the image is very poor mostly due to the matted widescreen format that results in what's known as 'gutterboxing' (black bars all around the image) when the movie is played on widescreen TVs. Some TVs allow zooming in to fill the screen in cases like this, but then the image becomes very grainy - so much so that it's probably better to watch it in the 'gutterboxed' mode.
So in conclusion, those with the older standard 4:3 TVs under 30 inches probably won't notice any loss of resolution. But for folks like me with big screen TVs I advise waiting until this movie gets an updated DVD treatment. Alternatively, if you own a DVD player that can play region 2 discs, the British version (ASIN: B000069JE7 available from Amazon.co.uk) is an anamorphic transfer.
Gabriel played by Walken is priceless, Viggo Mortensen as the Devil, wow.......2006-11-11
The movie in itself is lacking or rather the story is cheesy. So setting that aside it is, however creative and amusing, a must own. Its about the never ending war between heaven and hell, angles have come down both fallen and still in service to God to walk the earth hunting down a recently dead evil soul that Lucifer wants for his side. One angle found it and hid it inside a small girl. An ex priest to be now detective is following this case because of a past connection and chasing down the clues only to be slowed down by Gabriel who wants to start his own war. In turn a deal with the Devil was made.
Its a fun movie, I enjoy watching it over and over again.

Wholly Moses! is a clever, 1980 Biblical farce that has much in common with Monty Python's Life of Brian. Dudley Moore, between star-making performances in 10 and Arthur, plays Old Testament-era idol maker Herschel, whose life parallels that of the more famous Moses in many ways. Forced into the role of seer for Egypt's pharaoh, Herschel becomes convinced he has divine powers, until destiny proves otherwise and his subsequent misadventures as a slave, fake eunuch, and betrayed husband (Laraine Newman plays Herschel's unfaithful spouse) lead him to question the necessity of believing in any god at all. Wholly Moses! is directed by Gary Weis, perhaps still best known for his short works on the early Saturday Night Live, and the film plays like a succession of sketchy ideas. It does have powerful and inspired moments, however, including Herschel's dialogue with the devil (John Ritter) and the sight of James Coco sweeping small frogs. --Tom Keogh

boring.......2006-07-26
I thought with names likes Richard Pryor, Dudley Moore, John Ritter, it would be a good satire on the bible. Turned out to be a Dudley Moore ripoff. The script is sub-standard. Does anyone want to buy my copy?
As silly as I remembered.......2006-07-11
I had not seen this movie since it came out in 1980. It was as slapstick hilarious as I remembered. What I had forgotten was the outstanding cast of actors: Richard Pryor, John Ritter, etc.
Better story line than 'Blazing Saddles'.
Plausible history.......2005-02-12
While touring the Middle East Harvey and Zoey get off the buss and finds some scrolls in a cave. They chronicle the life of Herschel; as Harvey starts reading we are carried back to the actually time and given a first hand look at what really took place with Herschel and Moses. Several times God speaks to Moses and Herschel is in earshot and thinks it is he being addressed.
My favorite scene is when they are both in baskets floating down the Nile and Moses give Herschel's basket a push off course and changing the course of history.
Dudley Moore is Harvey/Herschel and Laraine Newman is Zoey/Zerelda. There are many great actors that are choice picks for the characters. A short list:
Richard Prior - Pharaoh
John Ritter - Satan (The Devil)
Lisa Caimano - Baby Moses
John Houseman - The Archangel
The story of Herschel and Zerelda.......2005-01-13
The late Dudley Moore's film career was starting to strengthen in the late 1970's,starting with a supporting role in 1978's FOUL PLAY,then co-starring with Bo Derek in "10" the following year. However, this film was a box office disappointment despite the all-star cast. Moore is Harvey Orkin,a language professor at a New York college. Harvey is taking a trip to Jerusalem's Holy Land to recover from the break-up with his live-in girlfriend. Sitting next to Harvey on the bus is Zoey(Laraine Newman, late of TV's Saturday Night Live). Zoey introduces herself as "Zoey from Los Angeles"(Newman is a Los Angeles native). The Pilgrimage Tours bus is driven by an Israeli named Mohammed. When the bus stops and the passengers get off,Zoey's hat is blown by the wind off her head. She discovers a scroll which Harvey reads(obviously what was written on it was not in English). Moore and Newman play dual roles. Their respective others are Herschel and Zerelda. The biblical story begins with infant Herschel being set afloat upon the River Nile, taken into custody by an African-American woman. The late James Coco plays Herschel's father who works at Herschel's business,Semut & Sons. Herschel and Zerelda fall and love and get married. Their wedding gift from Zerelda's father is a tent(their own home). Zerelda and her six sisters are all talented dancers, according to the girls' father(Richard B. Shull). The all-star cast includes Dom DeLuise, the late Madeline Kahn, the late John Ritter as a devil and Richard Pryor as the Pharoah. The Pharoah, when he was a young kid, first met Herschel thus labeling him "Stargazer". Jeffrey Jacquet plays the young Pharoah. Zerelda is turned into a pillar of salt(that's how death occurs in Egypt). In a later scene the adult Pharoah sentences Herschel to the dungeon. When the story ends,Zoey and Zerelda, along with the other passengers re-board the bus and the end credits roll. Newman was still on SNL when this film was made. It was directed by her friend Gary Weis. Some of Weis's short films appeared in some SNL episodes that were filmed in L.A. featuring Newman.
Great with one reservation.......2004-11-11
This is a great movie. I enjoyed it as much now as when I saw it at the theaters. Highly recommended. John Ritter, Richard Prior and James Coco shine. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the DVD is standard. The film (as shown by the credits) is VERY wide screen and you lose so much of the picture that it hurts some of the scenes. Please release it in widescreen!!!!!!!!!!!

Not for people who liked the two first movies.......2007-03-01
A lot of reviewers have mentioned the good performance of Bruce Payne in this movie. I just feel that I have to comment that unless you are a fan of his to begin with you will probably be bored to death by this movie.
In my humble opinion both the script and the actors are beyond bland and do not compare at all to the two previous movies neither in quality or content. I would never have made it to the end had it not been for a desire to see if it was possible to maintain the awful quality throughout the movie. Amazingly it was. If you liked the two first movies, do yourself a favor and don't watch this. Buy another movie at random, you're pretty much guaranteed to get better value for money.
That said, this is an interesting example of how you can make bland actors look worse by giving them a boring and inconsistent script and then letting a mad, drug abusing parrot do the editing.
Best scene: The warlock struggling(and failing) to pull the main character back while she is *knocking down a brick wall*. A study in how to portray the villain as an elderly lady in a warlock suit. God... I was crying on behalf of everyone involved.
Bruce Payne is squashed and Warlock 3 is a dud.......2005-11-02
Hottie Ashley Laurence (Hellraiser, Lightning Bug) and her friends stay at this old building which is supposed to be of historical significance. While at this shindig, Warlock Bruce Payne (Dungeons and Dragons 1 and 2) arrives convincing everyone that he is an archtect and so on and so forth. Then a storm hits, so Payne stays with the gang threwout the night...some thing he's cool, some think he's just a freak and some think that's he's not who he says he is. Soon, Payne unleashes his wrath, killing the friends off one by one to get to the prize, which is Laurence and he's supposed to sacrifice her for something. I was only interested in this for Bruce Payne, Ashley Laurence and Soap Opera star Rick Hearst (Carpool Guy, Tv's General Hospital). Also starring Angel Boris (Intercepter Force) and Boti Ann Bliss (National Lampoon's Dorm Daze). Another crappy horror sequel to put on the pile.
Not really worth it.......2004-11-02
I liked Warlock, really liked Warlock: The Armageddon and was uninspired by Warlock III.
The first two had really original storylines but this one chose a typical "college kids" in a spooky house route. None of the humor of the first two films can be found here. The creative use of the warlock's powers wasn't even developed much in this one.
The ending bothered me. I don't want to ruin the film for anyone who still wants too see it so I will just say that the epilogue of the film just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the film. The climax was what i had expected ut the epilogue seemed unbelievable.
The film would be enjoyable for anyone who felt that the first two were a little too light. The tone is decidedly darker in this installment to fit in with contemporary horror films (you could go light in the 80's and 90's). This meant it wasn't as epic as the other films. In the first two films the Warlock is trying to unmake creation or free Satan from Hell, in this one it's just about killing a girl and her friends.
Shocking and I mean 'Shocking'.......2004-06-15
For those who have not seen this movie yet, do yourselves a favour and just rent it if you absolutley have to, for the watch once appeal(for lack of a better word).
Warlock 1 and 2 are absolutely fantastic movies, with great story, intrigue and although the Warlock is of course evil, you are captured by the immense power of the character. Warlock 3 has no right whatsoever in being part of the Warlock movie legacy. Bruce Payne does play a good Warlock. In fact if it wasn't for his character portrayl and a chance to compare the two Warlocks I would have stopped after the first 25 minutes of the film.
Basically if you want to watch a porno film, then grab a porno film. When however you want to watch a movie about an occult figure for the story and the idea of the Warlock in an engrossing account, you reach for a film like this. The problem is, it doesn't provide you with that story. The character is not even the focus of the film, instead the focus is on seeing a bunch of 2nd rate actors butt naked 40% of the time and giving an audience the impression that all college students are idiots.
This film should never have been made. Watch it if your a fan of Bruce Payne but be warned you will be using the fast forward function on your remote often during this film.
Witch Way?.......2002-09-22
Warlock III - End of Innocence
I started out on the wrong foot with this film. I made the classic mistake of rushing to get a film for the weekend, not finding what I wanted and grabbing something that I thought was the continuation of another series entirely. Not until the action opened on an entirely different cast of players did I figure out my mistake. Being doubly grumpy does not make me a friendly viewer.
The film starts out with college student Kris (Ashley Lawrence) receiving a call about a house she had inherited. Since Kris had never known her original family, she jumps at the opportunity to learn about her past and dashes off, without her friends, to investigate. She arrives and is promptly badly spooked (people who know this series will recognize the house as belonging to Phillip Coventry [Bruce Payne], the warlock). A grand thumping at the door announces the arrival of... Kris's college friends. Among them her boyfriend Michael (Paul Francis), her best friend and apprentice witchlet Robin (Boti Ann Bliss), and her high school buddy Jerry (Jan Schweiterman). "Great!" thinks me, "Yet another college student hack-and-slash film."
Well, it is and it isn't. Don't mistake me; 'End of Innocence' has a twenty-five word or less plot, an unknown cast, and the requisite gratuitous nudity and violence. Nevertheless, surprisingly, the film isn't cheesy at all. Director Eric Freiser stays with fairly understated and subdued effects, rather than immense splashes of gore and parts. This makes that acting more prominent, and several of the cast really turn in professional jobs. Coupled with a setting that actually is interesting, and good film work, this makes the story far more believable that many similar efforts.
The end result is an enjoyable rendition of a classic grade B horror flick - forgettable, but fun. Definitely an R rating, but not excessively so. I would suggest seeing parts one and two first. Then you won't have to spend the time I did figuring out what is going on.

Great .......2006-08-10
The movie arrived in super condition.I had seen this movie only once many many years ago and had searched for it but did not know the title. Then there it was was on AMC. Had to have it for my collection. Great acting, super plot and an even better ending.
The angel slipped.......2006-07-28
This is a light weight film with a heavy weight star. The film is not worthy of the great Paul Muni.
Stay Away From Passport - Large "PIP" Logo On Screen.......2006-04-19
Both Passport DVD's I've had the misfortune of viewing (this one & Plan 9 From Outer Space) have a large "PIP" logo on screen for the entire movie which is extremely distracting & unneccesary. For quality, get the Roan edition.
"You don't belong where I'm going honey.".......2005-08-23
I got the wrong idea somewhere. When I originally read about this movie I heard it was about a tough gangster, played by Paul Muni, who after death tries to bust out of Hell. I was very excited.
I rented it and it's nothing like that at all! Instead of BRUTE FORCE in Hell this is some overly sappy story about a gangster who dies, is fooled by Satan to go back to Earth and ends up doing good instead of bad.
Anne Baxter is enjoyable (and easy on the eyes), but outside of that I was disappointed in the hokieness of the whole thing.
Judge for your self.......2005-06-14
Nick (Claude Rains) never satisfied with the amount of soles caught, has his hat set for an incorruptible judge. He will recruit Eddie Kagle to replace Judge Fredrick Parker (both played by Paul Muni) in exchange for a second chance at life.
I you were raised Catholic then you will recognize the title as you have a devil on one shoulder and an angle on the other and you are struggling in the middle.
There is great interaction between Paul Muni and Claude Rains. This move takes unexpected twists and turns. I may remind you a little of "The Devil and Daniel Webster "(1941). However no one can play "Nick" as well as Claude Rains.
I kind of like the way they return to the surface. I never trusted those types of elevators. Before you write off Anne Baxter as just another personality in this film remember that she was also Nefretiri in "The Ten Commandments" (1956)

FEAR NO EVIL
Review by Nickolas Cook
What do you get when you mix a rock and roll teen movie with devil horror? Of course, you get FEAR NO EVIL, Frank LaLoggia's 1980 low budget drive-in masterpiece of young lust and a vengeful Satan.
For those of you unfamiliar with the movie it's a simple tale of three angels, now in contemporary human forms, who must destroy a young satanic youth (played straight faced by uber-Goth looking Stefan Arngrim), possessed by an ancient Lucifer. The forms that the three defending angels take, an elderly priest, his aged serenely spirited sister, and a young innocent high school girl, are only slightly reminiscent of THE EXORCIST, but owe a great deal to the success of Friedken's bigger budget devil scare. Thrown into the mix, we have teen sex, drinking, drugs, guns, fighting (even a fatal game of dodge ball), and lots of very cool 80s style alternative music. The soundtrack alone is worth the viewing.
But the strengths of the film lay mostly in the older actors' strong performances, as they work hard to make the mostly silly plot believable. Arngrim also turns in a stark, maybe at times a bit overacted, performance as the reincarnated Lucifer. His reactions tend to pull us along with him, and make him a very sympathetic evil. The unfortunate casting of a talentless young Kathleen Rowe McAllen is the biggest detraction from the movie, as she looks woefully into the camera and tries hard to convince as a high school girl. But she does almost nothing to help the ailing plot, and seems almost an afterthought to the cast.
FEAR NO EVIL has a quick beginning, but lags in the middle, as it stumbles through a couple of wasted sub-plots that fall short of logic and emotion.
Don't get me wrong: There are some fine creepy moments in FEAR NO EVIL, but most of them tale place in the last twenty minutes. I especially liked the Easter play gone awry. Bloody and surprisingly nasty.
The special effects are what you'd expect from a low budget drive-in flick. Nothing fancy, some explosive pre-green screen effects, and a great orchestral music to back it up. But what works best for the film is when the effects are low key; as when the dead workmen are resurrected by their unholy master.
LaLoggia chose his locations well for the climax, an eerie castle, punctuated by sparse lighting and lots of mid-frame camera work. He really makes the atmosphere work for the story. But one can only wish he had used it more throughout the film.
In 1980 this was considered quite a successful low budget film, and helped spawn even more EXORCIST ripoffs. The movie holds up as well for me as it did back then, and might just be considered classic status in this post-Scream UPN/FOX teen horror PG13 horror backlash.
If you like your devil films cheap and dirty, this is the one for you.
--Nickolas Cook
THE HOMEN?.......2005-11-22
If all comedies were as funny as this "horror" movie then the world would be a happier place. I went into this thinking that it was going to be a serious retelling of THE OMEN instead I ended up laughing until I cried on 3 occasions and screaming in horror as male nudity flashed on the screen unannounced repeatedly. This movie is a classic!
According to the story as best as I could follow it Satan is constantly reborn into human form and this time he's been reborn into an extremely effeminate acting high school boy who seems to have a interest in females but at the same time acts like Jim Jay Bullock's gayer brother including a wild all nude kissing scene in the boy's shower! Package close-up included!
Homo-erotic undertones aside FEAR NO EVIL is pretty quick paced and nutty as all get out. I loved the scene where the father finds his missing wife in a hidden room (she's covered in cobwebs) so for some reason he shoots her in the head and she literally flies out of her wheelchair and goes face first (!) out the window! Oh I was howling!
Watch it with some friends.
Soundtrack includes The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The B-52's and two songs by The Talking Heads!
PSYCHO KILLER ! .......2005-09-28
Frank LaLoggia's Brilliant directorial debut "FEAR NO EVIL" is truly one of the most underrated horror films of the 80's! Its loaded with a dark grey atmosphere,a!SICK!soundtrack, good amount of blood, some uniquely disturbing moments & cheesey 80's lighting efx along with some truly excellent lighting efx(for that time & budget)topped off with a very cool ending. This is a horror gem that belongs in every horror fans collection without a doubt!
I saw Satan's dingle..........2005-02-06
Have you ever sat through a film, and then after it was over, wondered at all the things you could have better spent time you just used watching said film? That happened to me tonight after watching Fear No Evil (1981)...the back of the DVD case states `Fear No Evil marked the extraordinary debut of 26-year-old writer/director/co-producer/composer Frank LaLoggia and remains one of the most startling horror films of the 80's'...I'd probably take exception with the usage of the terms `extraordinary' and `startling', as they seem to apply to another film...as I already mentioned, the film was written and directed by Frank LaLoggia, and stars Stefan Arngrim (Class of 1984). Also appearing in the film is Kathleen Rowe McAllen (As the World Turns, All My Children), Elizabeth Hoffman (Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!) and a bunch of people I couldn't recognize, probably because their collective credits indicate they're all pretty much bit actors, and had decent screen time here only because they were willing to work cheaply.
The film starts off pretty well, as we witness a battle between what is supposed to be the devil incarnate and a priest, and the holy roller wins out...but don't count old Scratch out yet, as he makes a comeback in the form of a baby named Andrew. After one of the more exciting (and bloody) christenings I've seen, we fast-forward about 17 years to see a grown Andrew, played by Arngrim, a gangly, straight A student and senior in high school...oh yeah, and he's also the devil incarnate (I wonder where that fits in on his transcripts). Anyway, Andrew begins realizing his potential, making plans to actualize his dominion over the Earth, but not if three archangels, in human form (well, two in human form, a young girl and an old woman, the third being the now deceased priest), have anything to say about it...
As I said, the film started off strong, but soon petered out (after about ten minutes)...the next hour is, well, boring...seriously, not much happens. There were one or two bright spots, but the story drags...and drags....and drags...until the last 15 minutes or so when things pick up again. I actually had to stop the movie like three times and go do something else, as I found myself becoming annoyed with the fact so very little was happening. There were a few decent elements in the film...the cinematography, the music, the locations used, but what really derailed the movie was the lack of direction in the story. There were a couple of different stories going on at once, the angels in human form coming together, and Andrew coming into his own, but these elements were drawn out to the point where they killed the pacing completely. There were some points of interest during Andrew's development, in particular the dodgeball incident...and that's something else...did anyone ever play dodgeball in high school gym class? I recall playing this in grade school, but then once I passed into later grades, this activity was replaced by others like rope climbing and square dancing. Another thing...if you're looking for some nudity, there's like one or two female chest shots, very brief, countered by a long scene in the boy's shower room...maybe it just seemed long to me, as sausage fests really aren't my thing. Seriously, if you like male bum cakes and male dingles, you're in for a treat here. The scene included a male bully taunting Andrew, making references to his sexuality in that the bully jokingly pressed Andrew for a date. The bully then followed this up by forcibly...kissing Andrew on the mouth! Um, okay...I'll stick to snapping someone's behind with a wet towel, but to each his own. Eventually things pick up again, as the local church is performing the Passion play, and Andrew, not to be outdone, revives the dead, and causes spontaneous bleeding among parishioners. The walking dead did look kinda cool, but their role in the story was slight and their time on screen minimal. I'm unsure what his purpose was in raising the dead, other than to show us he could. The acting actually wasn't that bad, and the script decent. I could be critical of the special effects, but given the limited budget of the film, that really wouldn't be fair, and besides, I've seen much worse in more expensive films, and I felt there was an attempt here to make the most of what they had. I've always found that if the story is strong and the acting passable, certain things can be overlooked, such as meager effects. Look at the film The Day After Tomorrow...they had some really amazing effects, but they tried to use them to cover up the lousy story, and it didn't work...a polished turd is still a turd...I will say LaLoggia does have talents, and during brief parts of the film I almost felt like I was watching a John Carpenter movie, but he needs to familiarize himself with the idea of a cohesive plot and moving things along at a well-regulated pace. Horror fans may find bits and pieces (pun intended) of the film to their liking, but the patience required to get to those scenes is too much. There are some decent tunes used sparingly in the film by such artists as The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, and The Ramones, and I also found the original music to be suitable and even inspired.
The widescreen (1.85:1) picture, enhanced for 16X9 TVs, looks decent, and the audio comes through clean. There's a whole slew of extras including a commentary track by the writer/director and the photographer, behind the scenes footage, a theatrical trailer, like 9 or 10 TV spots, a poster and still gallery, the original screenplay on DVD-ROM, and a six page booklet insert with production notes.

Cool Movie.....................2004-11-05
I do not understand all the bad reviews on this movie. First of all I Think The main actor was good who plays the son of satan. And yes some of the effects were chessy but what do you expect from an 80's b movie flick.I also found many scenes to be very disturbing especially the part when he drinks the blood from the dog that scene to me looked realistic.Aside from the chessy effects This movie is classic and deserves to be in anyone dvd selection who appreciates artistic chessy b movies. I Highly Recommend it. Also the Soundtrack Rocks............ The Ramones Rule!

Description
Andy & Anna are bored and decide to go for a drive in the country. On the way they meet another couple who claim to know them from many years before. They agree to visit their country house and end up staying the night. A simple game with a Ouija board goes badly wrong and the evening begins to turn into a nightmare. Things get worse when Anna is attacked by a mysterious stranger. When Andy goes to investigate he finds that they have strayed into the clutches of a dangerous pair of psychopaths who are planning for them a fate worse than death. In 1970's Spain, certain films were released with an "S" classification - S for Sex. These were films with an unusually high number of scenes of sex & sadism. Satan's Blood was one of the first of these "S" films and is still one of the most notorious.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good, but flawed.......2007-06-30
Satan's Blood is a mixed bag while there are some excellent and creepy moments there are also scenes that just sort of fall a bit flat. Satan's Blood really bothers me only because it had potential to be something great.
The movie opens up with a rather strange and twisted scene that doesn't seem to have any connection to the rest of the movie. Regardless the scene plays out well and helps set the tone.
After that the movie does slow down as we are introduced to the main characters in the movie. It does take a little while before anything major happens.
The biggest flaw of the movie is the script from writer/director Carlos Puerto. The great thing about the horror genre is you can get away with a sub-par script some of the time. You need something that can at least sort of keep things interesting.
The script actually wasn't bad, but it just doesn't really go anywhere. There were some pretty good ideas that if built upon would have really fleshed out the movie.
As a director Carlos Puerto fairs a lot better; while some scenes do lack tension others have it. First up the location is excellent and very isolated that is always a good thing. And the house is quite creepy. Even during the scenes in daylight the movie still has that creepy vibe.
Some scenes by Carlos Puerto might fall flat at times, but as a whole he is able to mostly get the job done. But Satan's Blood does border on straight up horror and camp. This flick isn't one of those so bad its good movies, but some scenes do border on that level.
Having such a great location really does add to the tone of the movie even if at times not everything works. There is also plenty of nudity and sex scenes, which sometimes is very much needed and Satan's Blood did benefit from that.
One thing that really works well in Satan's Blood is the sound; when the wind is blowing outside it really adds to the movie. And again that is what bothers me so much. Satan's Blood really had potential to be something great. I did very much enjoy the movie, but it could have been more.
Satan's Blood was produced by cult director Juan Piquer Simon best known for Pieces and Slugs. When you see his name and know his work you will probably expect something like those movies. But as I stated before Satan's Blood does border on camp at times, but it's in no way a so bad it's good movie.
Personally I would have loved to have seen what Juan Piquer Simon could have done with this movie; apparently he directed some scenes, but is un-credited.
In closing Satan's Blood is a mostly solid satanic flick that is elevated by great use of location. Some scenes work well and others fall flat at times. If you are a fan of European horror Satan's Blood might be worth watching.
Surprisingly good Polanski-esque horror film.......2007-05-23
This Spanish film was made not long after the demise of Franco, when censorship loosened up in Spain considerably. My sense is that this was basically intended as an exploitation flick, but the filmmakers had talent and imagination, and the result is a low-budget horror gem. Very well directed, replete with a sinister atmosphere reminiscent of Polanski films like THE TENANT and ROSEMARY'S BABY and some genuinely strange and creepy touches. A good horror film for viewers with brains and imagination.
Not a great moment for Satan in the cinema.......2007-05-02
I won't spend long on this review, because I spent too long watching this film.
A fan of subversive cinema...you learn to take the good and bad. Though not down right bad, this film isn't really good either. It's mostly slow and boring. Not even ambient or creepy. The direction is ok, but the script and the acting is just dull. Then once you sleep through the softcore porn orgie and the very fake bad makeup effects...it just kept going......
I had to find something else and move on.
Dissapointing with a cool cover. What can you do?
Don't expect too much, unless you're looking for satanic orgies and bad acting........2007-03-04
"Satan's Blood" definitely has that foreign movie feel to it, but it really doesn't have much to offer except a lot of full frontal nudity, some odd Satanic sex scenes, and a poor attempt at a horror movie. This movie is not scary at all, but it does give you a look at an interpretation of the disgusting satanic rituals. The acting is predictably poor and the English dubbing isn't very convincing for sure. Overall, this is a very lackluster horror flick, notwithstanding when and where it was made. Of course, with a horror movie about satanism from Spain made in 1977, what should I expect? That being said, it's definitely not my cup of tea...thank goodness for ebay!
Satanists, murders, and orgies - what more could you want?.......2006-08-13
I hate to admit it, but the main reason I bought this movie is because of the cool art on the DVD case. But I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Satan's Blood begins with a scene that can be described as pure exploitation. The opening scene is of a Black Mass. The room is decorated with a huge pentagram on a wall, and black candles light the room. A priest bows before the pentagram, and attends to a woman who has just been brought into the room. She is in a white dress, and everyone else are wearing black ceremonial robes. After a display of full-frontal female nudity, the priest stabs the woman in the back. But I can only assume he stabbed her, because it doesn't actually look like he stabs her. It looks like he slid the dagger underneath her back WITHOUT stabbing her. There are several other stabbings in the movie, and none of them look realistic. Regardless, it's safe to assume the woman was an unwilling human sacrifice. My other complaint about this scene is that the woman doesn't seem to mind being raped. Is a greater degree of realism too much to ask for from the filmmakers?
We are then introduced to the two main characters, Andres and Ana (Andy and Anna in the dubbed version), and their dog Blackie. Ana is four months pregnant. While driving around town they are stopped by another couple, Bruno and Berta (Bruno and Mary in the dubbed version). Bruno claims to have known Andres back in college, but Andres can't recall ever seeing him. Regardless, Andres and Ana agree to go to the mysterious couple's huge country house. Shortly after arriving, Blackie is barking loudly at a freezer, which leads the viewer to think the mysterious couple are hiding something in the freezer - especially when Berta menacingly says "Silence!" to Blackie, and he immediately falls silent. It quickly becomes apparent that the couple store meat in their freezer, after we see Berta hunched over a kitchen table, chomping loudly on a raw piece of flesh. The manner in which the mysterious couple eats is a sight that unnerved me.
One of the movie's highlights is when the two couples sit down to contact the dead. Instead of using a cheap Ouija board that any old department store would sell, the mysterious couple have a beautiful Ouija table! They just haul off the tablecloth, grab a fancy glass, and they're ready to communicate with the dead. But the Ouija reveals some deeply personal information about Ana, which upsets her greatly. You wouldn't think watching people use a 'talking board' (or in this case, a 'talking table') would be interesting, but it is in Satan's Blood. It helps ratchet up the suspense. Keep an eye out for the candle that mysteriously goes out by itself after the spirit spoke to Bruno! The second highlight of the film is an orgy scene. The dim-lighting, the roaring fire in the fireplace, and the ominous background music make the ritualistic orgy scene seem surreal, fascinating, and even frightening. And the picture of Jesus that bursts into flames makes for some incredible imagery. But it's hard to believe that Andres and Ana, who by chance have stumbled upon a naked Bruno and Berta in the middle of a Satanic ritual, would partake in an orgy with them. It's even harder to imagine they would after Berta spoke to them in a rather demonic voice (shortly before the orgy began). Perhaps they were too passive to refuse? Or curious? Or both?
There's lots of cool stuff in this movie. The opening credits show blood dripping, with some rather loud and frightening music playing - so simple, yet so cool. And it's cool how Bruno and Berta like to snarl when they have sex. It makes them seem sinister, and evil. And decades before the weird looking doll in Saw, there was the weird looking doll in Satan's Blood, which makes the same scream as Berta did at the end of a ritual. It's not as cool as the doll in Saw, but I'd say it's pretty cool. And just what was the doll's significance? Was it just thrown into the movie because it's cool? And the sight of the mutilated dog will disturb most people more than what the mysterious couple keep in their freezer. And the part where the doors are slamming shut is cool. And if you look closely you'll notice the squatter is seated at the Satanists' table. That's when it becomes apparent what their nefarious plan was from the very beginning. And in case you didn't figure it out then, it becomes crystal clear in the final scene on the street.
The dubbing for Satan's Blood isn't too great. The main problem I had with it was that the dubbed voice for Bruno sounded too goofy most of the time. It sounded like the new host of America's Funniest Home Videos provided the dubbed voice of Bruno. While the English dubbing wasn't terrible, you'll need to watch it with English subtitles to properly experience and enjoy the film.
The DVD also has an interesting documentary called The Devil's Disciples. Gavin Baddeley talks at length about the origins of the Black Mass, the impact of Aleister Crowley on our common perceptions of Satanism, and the creation of the Church of Satan by Anton LaVey. I found the differences between the devil-worship of yester
