She joined a cult, battled anorexia, beat sexual harassers at their own game, got fake-married, and so much more. Ever since the Comedy Central series Strangers with Candy first aired, Jerri Blank has seemed fated for humiliation, disease, and a boxed set--here, her ultimate destiny is finally fulfilled.

In creating Jerri, the 46-year-old high school freshman, Amy Sedaris and her co-stars/co-writers Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert imagined a person who is both startlingly crass and strangely innocent. One minute Jerri is uttering the immortal line "I like the pole and the hole"--the next she's only interested in "pizza, pizza, pizza," and joining the cheerleading squad. Her world view is completely unaffected by her 32 years as a "junkie whore." It won't take a rabid SWC fan--just a lover of wicked satire--to appreciate this trapper-keeper-shaped package and the After School Special-based stories inside. Some of the bonus features, including an interview with the stars at the Museum of Television & Radio, will be familiar to folks who have previous, single-season DVDs. However, certain new additions, such as "The Trip Back" PSA, which stars a real-life Jerri clone, make this set a worth-owning item. Other highlights include deleted scenes--one of which features an inspirational meeting between Jerri and Buddha Stalin, Flatpoint's most controversial rock star. A clever film strip by closeted lovers Chuck Noblet and Geoffrey Jellineck on their "research trip" to Mexico also draws chuckles. Over 30 episodes, the jokes do become a touch repetitive, but the series never loses its energy or sharp wit. If you're looking for a show that will teach you how to do the wrong things the right way, the Strangers with Candy boxed set has the lesson plan for you. --Leah Weathersby

Product description

Set in suburban Flatpoint, USA, Strangers with Candy twisted the conventions of the After-School Special to create a completely original comedy series. Each half hour follows the misadventures of Jerri Blank, a 46 year old high school dropout who has spent the last 32 years in and out of prison - a self described "boozer, user and loser." Strangers with Candy commences as Jerri decides to pick up her life exactly where she left it: living at home and starting ninth grade. Faced with classic high school dilemmas every week, Jerri's old habits - as well as the misguided advice of her self-centered teachers - cause her to resolve each crisis by learning the wrong lesson from every scenario.

5 out of 5 stars The best show ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-03

I remember the first time I saw this show I thought it was so funny and so different from other shows that were on. I was so sad to hear that the show was canceled because this show was so awsome. I was searching on amazonl for this show because for a while I forgot about it and then remember it again. I was so excited to see that amazon hand the complete series for sale and at a great price. I whatch this every night when I have dinner and the shows are just as funny each time. If you are thinking of buying this please do, you wont be regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.........2007-06-25

These seasons are much better than the movie imho.. Copy quality is fair to below average, noisy, a bit over compressed. Half the disks are defective causing freeze and digital noise. I tested on other dvd players to verify.

4 out of 5 stars A laugh riot.......2007-06-13

Amy Sedaris should be a household name. Maybe she is in some circles. She is one funny woman. This show is bizarre and tacky. Politically incorrect to the extreme.

Somehow the main character, Jerri Blank--played by Sedaris--is sympathetic, even though she is shallow with no conscience. The premise is that this aging loser returns to high school to do things right this time. The storylines and dialog parody high school angst. Although the mean kids treat Jerri as a loser, and nerd, and even a "slut," they never notice that she's 46 years old. Jerri talks about her desire to be popular when she's not slipping into prison lingo.

Its a shock to see how adorable Sedaris is, while the character Jerri is not only older but very spent looking.

At first the racist remarks and sexual references are funny because they are so blatant and out of place. I have to say that I found them annoying after awhile.

When I'd finally watched the last show of the series, I was sad. I wish the show were still on. I have watched the movie Strangers with Candy which is hilarious as well.

5 out of 5 stars I Like the Pole and the Hole.......2007-05-16

Perfect for any fan of the Strangers With Candy Tv series. When the movie came out, I was soo excited. I waited and waited for it to come to a movie theatre in town and low and behold, it did not. So when it came out on video I quickly ran to the video rental store and picked it up. But to my astonishment, it wasn't at all what I had come to expect from such a funny ensemble. The jokes were repeats of the show and weren't even put into the right context. I was upset at the outcome of this "come-back". So I decided to buy the complete series to fill the need I still greatly had for the show. And I must say, I was very satisfied with this decision. Some of the episodes I had not seen and I then understood some of the not so funny jokes of the movie that made perfect sense in the context of the show. Personally, my favorite episode of all time is the very last one, but it's like the last bite of a suculent hamburger, it can't be enjoyed completely unless the entire thing has been devoured first.

Description

The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection contains the DVD debut of 8 Hitchcock classics including "Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Special Edition," and the following 7 new single-disc DVDs: "Dial M For Murder," "Foreign Correspondent" "Suspicion," "The Wrong Man," "Stage Fright," "I Confess" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." The previously released "North by Northwest" is also included in the 10-disc Signature Collection. Each of the 9 films in the collection shows why Hitchcock is regarded as one of Hollywood's most esteemed and important directors, and also brings legendary stars to the digital front including Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Montgomery Clift and many others.

Strangers on a Train - En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.

Each DVD will be presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition and will include the original theatrical trailer, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

As a long time fan of Hitchcock, I am always looking for more. I have approx. 20 of his films on DVD. This collection has some that I had never seen before. In addition, the "making of" special features are great for someone who wants to know what made Hitch so unique as a film director. I have (and will) spend many hours viewing these discs.

5 out of 5 stars Toby is great - well done, intelligent drama.......2007-06-06

I rented this to see Toby Stephens - he performs well, looks gorgeous as the glamorous brother/cousin, and does a couple of crying scenes that tear your heart out -- but the series bears a look for far more than that.

The drama is honest and compelling, and unsentimental about families and their connections -- and what rips them apart, and what makes them drift apart. And how the past relates to the present, and can sometimes throw an oblong clarifying light into what is going on. Great stuff -- what all of TV could be if not for the lowest-common-denominator.

4 out of 5 stars Happy to own it!.......2007-05-14

I bought this because I am a huge fan of Matthew Macfadyen and Toby Stephens. Was not disappointed! For certain this film is thought provoking and each character's story adds a little scrap to make this a beautiful family quilt. This reunion story is pure and honest -- and the actors are entirely believable. I didn't give it 5 stars only because it is a bit slow in parts. But because the story is so good, I can forgive that and declare that I am happy to own it!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-04-24

In "Almost Strangers," Stephen Poliakoff weaves a subtle spell. I recall thoroughly enjoying the engaging story and the superb acting--I mean, one can't beat Michael Gambon, Matthew Macfadyen, and Toby Stephens--when, totally unawares, I had become so entranced with the stories within the story of an extended family, that I had to watch all 237 minutes of it at one sitting.

Since the story is told from the point of view of Daniel (the son of the black sheep of the clan), who knows very little about the rest of the family, the viewer is put into a similar position, first of discomfort, as he moves from stereotypes, finally of fascinated affection, as he slowly unravels the secrets not only of his family but also of his own past.

Nor do the writers disappoint; all the clues deftly planted in the first scenes of the film, are revealed in a magical ending.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-15

Matthew Macfadyen played his role beautifully as Daniel. Truly a good film to watch.

5 out of 5 stars MEET THE FAMILY.......2007-01-04

THE MOVIE WAS GREAT. WELL DONE BY ALL THE ACTORS & ACTRESSES. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO SEE MATTHEW MACFADYEN IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MODE THAN THE ONE HE HAD PLAYED IN "PRIDE & PREJUDICE." IT CENTERED ON 3 DIFFERENT FAMILIES AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THEM AND WHAT EFFECT IT HAD ON THE REST OF THE FAMILIES. I FOUND IT FASCINATING.

Comedy Central's creatively crass "after-school special," Strangers with Candy, takes a well-deserved curtain call with this feature film version of the series. Canceled (some fans felt prematurely) after only three seasons, each SWC episode told the story of Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris), the 46-year-old former "boozer, user, and loser" who goes back to high school to pick up "exactly where (she) left off."

The principal audience for this film will be folks who already know the show and need a Candy fix, and they'll be relieved to find that most of the original cast has returned. Co-creators Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello are there (Dinello also directed the movie), and other favorites include Greg Hollimon as Principal Onyx Blackman; Maria Thayer as Jerri's best girlfriend, Tammi Littlenut; Deborah Rush as Jerri's wicked stepmother; and David Pasquesi as her stepmother's lover, Stew. (A few key supporting characters, including Jerri's ethnic friend Orlando, and her half-brother Derrick, have been recast.) The smaller parts are filled out by the biggest stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, and Philip Seymour Hoffman; Broderick deserves two thumbs up for his turn as the superstar science teacher, Dr. Roger Beekman.

SWC the movie plays almost as a Reader's Digest version of the show, with Jerri up to her old tricks, including betraying friends and trying to seduce the popular boys. If diehard fans find any fault with the film, it may be that the script doesn't cover enough new territory; a hilarious opening sequence of Miss Blank in prison, for example, only leaves one wanting more. For those who haven't yet matriculated with Jerri, the best way to get to know her wickedly misguided ways is through the series. The show was like cake... the movie is just the icing. --Leah Weathersby

4 out of 5 stars for heaven's sake-it's ok, not horrible!.......2007-06-07

Granted, it's not as good as the TV series. But, it does give us a chance to watch most of the old crew in action and they make a pretty good run of it! It certainly has it's moments (the joint-smoking freak out floored me!!) and it's nice to see them having fun again. "We all want to be homecoming queen" and we all wish they had made a movie a little more like the tv series but it's fun just the same, makes ya laugh and I appreciate them doing all the hard work to deliver it to us!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware-This is not like the tv series.......2007-06-04

I should start out by saying I am a huge fan of the TV series. So when I heard about the movie I was particularly excited. So excited in fact, I bought the DVD outright before I even watched the movie. A decision I would come to regret.

While the movie had a few funny moments (or rather, a couple) I hardly laughed through any of the movie. The jokes seemed to just completely fall flat. It also didn't help that some key characters were recast for the movie, further taking away from the experience. With such a talented cast, including some pretty big guest stars, I guess I just expected more out of the movie.

Do yourself a favor, stick with the TV series only. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off take this movie to my local Mega Media Xchange.

3 out of 5 stars VERY FUNNY FIRST HALF LOSES STEAM THROUGH THE SECOND HALF.......2007-05-06

I never really watched the TV series, but my wife enjoyed it. I watched this movie with her and I must admit, it was hard not to laugh. The film did seem to cool down a bit in the secand half, but it was pretty funny overall.

1 out of 5 stars Minus 5! How Does This @%&* Get Made?????.......2007-05-05

500 TV channels, nothing on! I decided to give this pile of excretement a chance. I lasted 15 minutes, wanted to stick a water pick into my ear to clean out of my brain what I had just seen. Luckily in time, memory fades!
Can you imagine foreigners watching this "thing"? No wonder we're hated!

What a waste of millions of dollars, what a waste of everything. Great scipts laying around that don't get produced, but dreck like this does. Obviously everyone involved was under the influence of controlled substances if they think anything in this movie was funny. You know the same phenomenon that happens with Will Farrel movies.

I don't know what an Amy Sedarkis is or IF she's supposed to be funny. Walking around with an over-the-top expression on your face like you've been constipated for the last 6 months is NOT funny. From now on wherever I see her name, RUN!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag.......2007-03-11

I was never a member of the cultish fan base that belongs to 'Strangers With Candy' (I preferred the somewhat similar 'Upright Citizens Brigade' far more, around the same time -- both airing on Comedy Central), but I did always enjoy the show when I happened to catch it, simply because it was so unique and absurd. Honestly, it was a bit strange hearing that they were making a transition to film so long after the show began, but naturally I was up for it and hoped for the best... and I was pretty disappointed.

The lamest aspect of this film is that it doesn't do anything differently than the show did for a great deal (!) of years. What's up? I mean, sure, we are to expect an overall ambience that is familiar, but I couldn't differentiate the movie from any particular episode, aside from the (overlong, at only an hour and a half) running time. It's Jerri doing the same schtick, with the unchanged type of people in the high school. Yes, that's fine and all, but if this is your tact, then you'd better provide consistently funny writing and, if it's not asking too much, some sort of interesting storyline. Yeah.... 'Strangers With Candy' is not armed with such pleasures.

I've always admired Amy Sedaris' ability to showcase her character as utterly repulsive, not so much mentally but physically. I mean, ugggggly; there's very little chance you'd think the actress playing Jerri underneath the makeup and expressions would be remotely normal looking, but Sedaris is, aesthetically, arguably a truly beautiful woman. I mean, what attractive actress would have the balls (figuratively _!_) to put themselves in such a position? None I can think of. But more than that, Sedaris really --is-- a brilliant comedian. I tend to come from the vantage point that, as sexist as it may sound, females lack the cardinal comedic abilities that make the paramount male comedians out there so outstanding -- just look at the rarely-changing inclination of the most renowned female comedians to possess more male personality attributes than female -- but there are exceptions... Sedaris, as Jerri Blank, is one of them... In this movie rendition, she has just as many moments that don't work as ones that do, but the ones that do prevail, soar... As with such performances, communicating the true magnificence with words is ultimately an act shrouded in futility, but I'd say that her manic, subtle bodily expressions and grotesque vocal delivery are most responsible for the humorous glory. And, with this overall execution of character, she accomplished what so few performers have allowed me to witness, providing an utterly unique sense of humor and wit that noone else can claim to possess. Again, it doesn't always work (and I personally think the direction is mostly to blame for this, even if the funniest moments must also be proudly accountable to the same director), but its oft radiance overcomes this.

So really, it's these glimpses of genius that make the movie at all worth watching. There are some completely wasted cameos by great actors (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matthew Broderick), and characters such as Paul Dinello's art teacher, that I've seen be so funny in the show, are near worthless. I will, however, admit that Stephen Colbert's performance is absolutely hysterical (intensely demanding his classroom to turn around so he can weep miserably). I have mixed feelings about Colbert -- I revere him for being partly responsible for much of Cartoon Network's 'Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law", but I can't really stand his political personality -- thankfully, his behavior in both the show and movie is a riot.

Overall, as a full-out experience, I'd probably bestow 'Strangers With Candy' two stars. Yet, like so many of my most treasured [live-action] shows ('Upright Citizens Brigade', 'Mr. Show', 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'), the greatness often arrives in spontaneous bursts, albeit at amply consistent intervals... and this greatness helps overcome so much of the mediocrity that can be found elsewhere in 'Strangers With Candy'. In this case, I honestly posit the particular trend is due more to laziness than, say, an unavailing result of over-ambition (with something like 'Mr. Show'), but I don't really mind that.

I will also mention that, in my opinion, it's pretty feasible the people who aren't able to reap anything from the movie's finer moments, will, as a whole, regard the movie an utter abomination.

I think [hope] I got my points across (with WAY more words than I'd have liked)...

3 out of 5 stars Illicit Love - 60's style.......2007-03-20

I have to say I am not a great fan of Kirk Douglas but he certainly tries to convince us that he is in love with the other woman - Kim Novak - but maybe a little too much? Problem is there there is no real chemistry between the two. Everyone else does an admirable job. Kim Novak is absolutely lovely and her portrayal of a tortured, unhappy, and unfilled woman is a gem. The story itself is very dated - the affair is made to seem a shocking situation, but in today's world it is a bit laughable. In the film, Douglas and Novak are sneaking out at night and both give their "unsuspecting" spouses excuses but can their spouses be that stupid not to have an inkling of what is going on? Of course! This film was made in the early 60's! Some fun phrases appear in the film that are campy: Novak's mother: "Margaret, I am not a tramp!", "Novak to her husband: "Don't you want me? Do you think I'm pretty?'. etc. etc. I doubt anyone when finished viewing the film will give it any oscars, but it is fun to watch although a few edits could have helped. My main reason for liking this film? Novak was never more naturally beautiful, and when I remember her, this is the film I remember. For those persons who will mention Vertigo (which is my favorite film), her peformance in this film is classic but it is Hitchcock's film. "Strangers" is Novak's (Sorry, Mr. Douglas). The ending of the film is flat and expected. To be honest, Douglas goes back to his wife, but as I mentioned before, there was no real chemistry, and when he tells Novak at the end, "I love you Maggie, I really do", one wonders, if he really does, why not take the chance? But then this was a early 60's film and you didn't do that then. Unless, of course, you were Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

5 out of 5 stars for fans of kim novak.......2007-01-15

woman had that something special. easy to believe what she does here. seems I fall in love with her every time I see her. the ending is a heartbreaker.

DVD cover does not do her justice. Kim is far better looking than this.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful romantic movie.......2006-11-10

It seems a real story when a man who try reach a success career and leave his family in second place them appears a pretty woman who makes him crazy. Then when he look back, see his career and family going away, them he give up his real love.

5 out of 5 stars "Passion is NOT a dirty word!".......2006-03-25

Larry (Kirk Douglas) meets Maggie (Kim Novak) and sparks start flying as soon as their eyes meet (during the opening credits!). They both have spouses, but are bored and, of course, unappreciated at home. Soon they're lying to their mates and meeting regularly for romantic trysts. Eventually, the truth comes out and Larry must choose between Maggie and his family.

The romantic drama is set in an affluent suburb in 1960, with beautiful clothes, bright orange furniture, and copper-colored kitchen appliances. Douglas's Larry is real, sensitive, and undeniably sexy; I really enjoyed his performance. Novak's sultry-voice and sleepwalker-style are overdone, but she's still believable as the housewife who wants to be good, but always ends up in trouble because she's just so gosh-darned pretty. Barbara Rush is lovely and charming as Larry's long-suffering wife. Walter Matthau plays a mild-mannered neighbor who turns out to be a rat.

There's a lush, romantic musical score and beautiful photography, and the seasoned actors make it seem real. "Strangers" ranks as a satisfying soaper and memorable chick flick. The DVD has no extras, but the story is worth watching again and again.

Edward G. Robinson's ill-gotten gains embroil his entire family in scandal and murder. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars House of Strangers.......2007-06-22

Joseph L. Mankiewicz's scorching tale of a destructive family vendetta is a stylish, well-conceived outing. Though screenplay credit went to Philip Yordan, Mankiewicz's inspired touch is evident in the film's tight pacing and sharp, flavorful script. Robinson is masterful as an Italian-American patriarch, and the under-appreciated Conte is also aces as a slick operator who's not quite as tough as he seems. For a gritty noir you won't forget, enter this House of Strangers.

5 out of 5 stars UNIQUE PLOT, often used........2007-04-24

Joseph L. Mankewicz's great family drama is a one of a kind story starring Susan Hayard, E.G. Robinson and Richard Conte. Conte plays the favorite son of ruthless banker who does not run his business by the book (Robinson) that gets him in trouble. Conte takes the rap and goes to prison for 7 years while his greedy, dullard brothers just stand by and watch and take the bank over from their father. Hayward plays Conte's socialite girlfriend and nobody can deliver a one liner like a snap of a bullwhip quite like Hayward. And thanks to the bristling dialogue, the exchanges between Conte and Hayward are classic cinema.

Actually Hayward who was a big star at the time had just been signed by Fox and the studio did not know what to do with their expensive propety, so they cast her in a 3rd role despite her star billing. But thanks to the tight direction and witty and unusual script filled with film noir touches, makes this film a classic. The plot line has been used time and again but has never equalled the original.

All the lead stars are brilliant in this vibrating classic flick.

4 out of 5 stars Obscure dramatic gem.......2007-04-17

Despite its inclusion in the Fox Film Noir series, "House of Strangers" has more in common with "King Lear" than it does with "Panic in the Streets" and "The Street With No Name." Still, it flirts with noir through casting. Stars Edward G. Robinson and Richard Conte have frequently walked the dark, rain-swept streets of that anxiety plagued genre which generally focused on society's underclass.

"House of Strangers" tells the story of an Italian immigrant barber who finds his fortune in banking. But success comes with a heavy price as his tyrannical ways alienate his sons, three of whom let their father twist in the wind as his kingdom crumbles due to mismanagement and unethical practices.

Although Philip Yorden receives sole credit for the screenplay, film historian Foster Hirsch, who provides an insightful and entertaining commentary, insists the script was primarily the work of the director, Joseph L. Manckiewicz. The acidic tone of much of the dialogue does suggest it written by the man who brought us "All About Eve" the next year.

The cast is superb with Robinson brilliant as always, but it is Luther Adler as Joe, the eldest son and the most conniving, who offers the standout performance. His scene with Conte in the restaurant is a textbook example of fine acting. Susan Hayward is good, too, but her part is rather superfluous, added for box-office purposes rather than dramatic necessity.

"House of Strangers" is fairly obscure these days, and is probably best-known for having inspired the 1954 western "Broken Lance" with Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark, but it stands tall on its own merits and is well worth seeking out.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping Family Drama.......2006-09-19

Gino Monetti (Edward G. Robinson) is the toast of his enclave in Depression era New York. He runs a loan company that doles out cash to customers with no collateral. Who cares that he charges usurious rates. His sons abet him in his thriving business and fall neatly under his iron thumb. Then the feds come calling. All the resentment and deceit that had been percolating for years rises to the top and favorite son Max(Richard Conte) has to take the fall. Director Joseph Mankiewicz has crafted a terrific film about how the sins of the fathers visits wrath upon their sons. Edward G. Robinson does a terrific turn as the ever smiling patriarch with arsenic for blood. The underutilized Richard Conte is his equal or better as the son who has to the suffer the slings and arrows of the charade that the Monetti house of cards was. I remember seeing this film years ago on Cinemax and anxiously awaited it's DVD release. Just because a film is relatively obscure does not detract from it's greatness.

4 out of 5 stars The Immigrant Experience as Greek Tragedy. .......2006-08-25

"House of Strangers" is based on the novel "I'll Never Go There Again" by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright and novelist Jerome Weidman, who wrote about the immigrant experience in New York City in the early 20th century, particularly the Jewish immigrant experience. This screenplay is credited solely to Philip Yordan, but director Joseph Mankiewicz actually wrote the final version of the script. Jerome Weidman's book is about a Jewish banking family who were changed to Italians for the film. If that was in order to avoid controversy, it didn't quite work. The Giannini family, who founded Bank of America, complained to 20th Century Fox that the family in the film resembled theirs. But they were outdone by the studio chairman himself, Spyrus Skouras, who thought the fictional Monetti family was his. So he limited the film's release. That's unfortunate, because "House of Strangers" has some wonderful performances, including one that earned Edward G. Robinson a Best Actor award at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival.

Seven years after he went to prison for attempting to bribe a juror, Max Monetti (Richard Conte) returns to New York with vengeance on his mind, directed at his brother Joe (Luther Adler), whom Max believes gave the police the tip that put him away. His old flame Irene Bennett (Susan Hayward), a sharp-tongued uptown girl, wants Max to abandon thoughts of vengeance and start a new life with her. As Max listens to his deceased father's opera records, we travel back in time to when family patriarch Gino Monetti (Edward G. Robinson), a poor barber-turned-rich-banker, held his immigrant clients and his 4 sons under his sway. -Except for Max, whose forceful personality made him his father's favorite, immune to the petty abuses and selfish whims suffered by Joe, Antonio (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.), and Pietro (Paul Valentine) . When the State investigated the bank's lending practices, the bitterness that Gino's ill treatment had sowed became apparent.

"House of Strangers" is sometimes called film noir, probably because of Max's subjective, introverted perspective of the corrosive Monetti family dynamics. But this isn't even a crime film. Its strongest elements by far are Greek Tragedy, but "House of Strangers" is also part immigrant experience and part romance. The sins of the father are visited upon the sons, and the 3 main players in that drama -Gino, Max, and Joe- are memorable. Edward G. Robinson's performance is a bit theatrical, but Gino's character is so poisonous and his emotions so vivid that it doesn't matter if he is over-the-top. His lecture about the differences between the Old World and the New is a hoot too. Luther Adler impresses in the small but delicate part of Joe, the scorned son. The interaction between Max and Irene seems superfluous, as if it were transposed from another story. A lot of dialogue that was unmistakably written by Mankiewicz comes out of Irene's mouth. There is some good stuff, but Irene talks too much. "House of Strangers" is a fine Greek Tragedy and a harsh take on an immigrant family that made good.

The DVD (20th Century Fox 2006): Bonus features are a theatrical trailer (2 ½ min), a Poster Gallery of 4 b&w posters, a (mislabeled) Production Stills Gallery of 10 behind-the-scenes photos, a (mislabeled) Unit Photography Gallery of 23 production stills, and an audio commentary by film historian Foster Hirsch. The commentary isn't non-stop, but Hirsch analyzes the composition, framing, blocking, and any technique used to illustrate the film's themes for many scenes. He also comments on characters and provides background information on the film and actors. Subtitles are available for the film in English and Spanish.

From its cleverly choreographed opening sequence to its heart-stopping climax on a rampant carousel, this 1951 Hitchcock classic readily earns its reputation as one of the director's finest examples of timeless cinematic suspense. It's not just a ripping-good thriller but a film student's delight and a perversely enjoyable battle of wits between tennis pro Guy (Farley Granger) and his mysterious, sycophantic admirer, Bruno (Robert Walker), who proposes a "criss-cross" scheme of traded murders. Bruno agrees to kill Guy's unfaithful wife, in return for which Guy will (or so it seems) kill Bruno's spiteful father. With an emphasis on narrative and visual strategy, Hitchcock controls the escalating tension with a master's flair for cinematic design, and the plot (coscripted by Raymond Chandler) is so tightly constructed that you'll be white-knuckled even after multiple viewings. Strangers on a Train remains one of Hitchcock's crowning achievements and a suspenseful classic that never loses its capacity to thrill and delight. --Jeff Shannon

Description

En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker).

5 out of 5 stars Stranger things have happened! Another Hitchock classic!.......2007-05-14

This is one of my most favorite movies and wow, Granger stole the movie from Walker. Walker died soon after making this movie, but it was a true classic. This movie is reasonably priced on Amazon, so buy it with true faith in how great it will be. The movie lasts for generations. I enjoy it every time I see it.

5 out of 5 stars Never talk to a stranger.......2007-04-04

In Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a train" (1951), Robert Walker gave a remarkable and disturbing performance as Bruno, a spoiled playboy - psychopath who came up with a brilliant idea of committing a perfect murder - find a stranger who hates someone strong enough to wish them dead and swap murders with him - he kills yours, you kill his. While on a train, Bruno introduces himself to a handsome rising tennis star, Guy (Farley Granger) who is going through a rather nasty public divorce with his unfaithful wife Miriam in order to marry the woman he loves, Anne Morton. Guy hates his wife but would he kill Bruno's dominating father if Bruno murders his wife?

One of the most discussed and analyzed Hitchcock's films, "Strangers on a train" is considered one of the most satisfying thrillers ever. It is based on the early novel by the master of the psychological crime thrillers, Patricia Highsmith and it is a great artistic achievement in the thriller genre due to the masterful and creating Hitchcock's directing. Many scenes stand out and some are simply carved in the viewer's memory like the head turning tennis match with only one head never turned and the eyes fixed on Guy's's face and these are Bruno's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of Friendly Well-Dressed Strangers.......2007-03-24

Two cabs drop off two men at a train station in Washington DC for long distance travel. Bruno Antony makes his acquaintance with Guy Haines, the tennis star. Their characters are quickly established. Bruno is a too-friendly stranger (a bad sign?), a ne'er-do-well rich man's son. Bruno has the idea of committing the perfect murder: no motive to point to the killer. Guy humors Bruno instead of telling him where to get off (not a New Yorker). Guy's wife, pregnant with another man's child, no longer wants the divorce. Guy is so angry he threatens to strangle her. We see Bruno described as a "naughty boy". Bruno's father threatens to get medical treatment for him. [Does the apple fall far from the tree?] So Bruno goes ahead with this imagined contract, He stalks Miriam, Guy's wife, who goes to an amusement park with two men. [This shows popular entertainment before television.] And Bruno carries out his self-appointed mission.

Guy returns on another train. Bruno is lurking in the shadows of night to see him. The police drop by Guy's home. Guy visits Ann Morton, a Senator's daughter, and hears of Miriam's murder. There is humor in the Senator's remarks. The professor on the train remembers little. Now Bruno begins to stalk Guy. [The police don't notice this?] There is a funny scene at the tennis club where people's heads move mechanically, except for one man. Bruno's conversation with the Senator shows his increasing insanity, and so does his trick with the old lady. He is so weird it can create a scandal in Washington! Ann Morton figures out what happened: her sister Barbara resembles the late Miriam Haines! The watching detectives also see that "something funny is going on".

Guy calls Bruno to tell him his plan will be followed. [We see a watchdog that doesn't bark as a stranger?] There is a surprise here! The police learn of Guy's absence from home. Ann visits Bruno's mother, but little is accomplished. Bruno plans his revenge. Luck upsets Bruno's plan when the lighter slips from his hands. A crowd watches its retrieval. Once again Bruno visits the amusement park [remember them?] waiting for the darkness to cover him so he can plant Guy's lighter at the crime scene. The merry-go-round plays "Ain't We Got Fun". Guy shows up to follow Bruno, a fight on the carousel while "The Band Played On". There is a dramatic finish to the ride, and the truth is discovered at last when it slips from Bruno's hand.

You can pick out some faults in this story, but it seems quite good with its mixture of drama, suspense, and humor. Raymond Chandler wrote the screenplay.

5 out of 5 stars Strangers on a Train.......2007-03-19

I'm not a real Hitchcock fan, but this movie by far is my favorite of anything he's done. The story line, suspense and drama is absolutely first rate. If you want to try a Hitchcock film, this one is it.

5 out of 5 stars strangers on a train.......2007-03-09

This Albert Hitchcock film based on a Patricia Highsmith novel was not successful by normal standards when released. long undervalued as one of Hitch's suspense movies, it is now being given the credit it deserves. This movie is both sudtle and startling in revealing the underbelly of those attractive people who walk among us harboring malice and death. Like Highsmith's Ripley character, Walker plays a composed neurotic as he convinces a stranger on a train to swap murders with him. Problem is only one of them was serious. Grand fun, and the ending will blow you away.

2 out of 5 stars Kathy Bates, what are you doing in this movie???.......2007-06-21

I give "Relative Strangers" two stars only for Kathy Bates and Danny DeVito, who do have a few funny lines. Very few, unfortunately. And the rest of the cast: Christine Baranski is totally wasted in a boring, unfunny role (why can't someone write a great film for Ms. Bates and Ms. Baranski to star in together?). Ron Livingston and Neve Campbell--two actors who I have liked in other TV shows/films--are incredibly dull in this flick. It's not their fault--blame the writer. I got this film--fortunately, for only $2 used here on Amazon so I didn't feel entirely cheated--for Kathy Bates and Christine Baranski. How bad could a film starring these two great ladies be? Pretty bad, I'm afraid. You've been warned.

5 out of 5 stars This deserved a theatrical release........2007-03-20

Saw this movie on Comedy Central recently. I didn't even know it existed. One of the funniest comedies of recent memory. Four times I busted my gut laughing. The whole thing was very amusing and entertaining. If Danny DeVito had released this movie instead of some of the awful ones that he has, he would be on top of the comedy ladder. Kathy Bates plays off of him expertly. Ron Livingston's expressions as the beleagured would be son, were hilarious. The scene where he hides in a closet and is privy to DeVito and Bates having sex on a bed, brought tears to my eyes. Funny! I am buying this one for my library.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comedy.......2007-02-19

Bates can play serious roles as well as she plays comedy (who can forget the 'squirrel lady' in Rat Race?). The interaction between Bates and Devito is very comic indeed. To bring down the blood pressure from watching one of my horror movie picks, I like an entertaining, lighthearted comedy, and this one delivered. When a thirty-four year old psychologist finds his birth parents he's more than disappointed, he's angry. They're not anything like he imagined. Can he learn to accept them for who they are and love them unconditionally?

Description

First comes love, then comes marriage'then come loads of laughs in this highly amusing (Time) comedy about a romantic coming-together that's about to fall apart! With a delightful (Los Angeles Times) cast, including Diane Keaton in her film debut, Lovers and Other Strangersis hilarious [with] funny, sad, touching and moving moments (The Hollywood Reporter)! As Mike and Susan prepare to walk down the aisle, the groom gets a case of cold feet. But turning to friends and family for support could send the couple running for matrimonial cover! Susan's father is fooling around with her mother's best friend; Mike's brother is divorcing his high-school sweetheart, and his parents are living a loveless lie. The rocky road to happily-ever-after has never been so uproarious as in this vividly real, genuinely funny movie (Leonard Maltin).

5 out of 5 stars Lovers and Other Strangers.......2007-07-04

Cy Howard's knowing, often side-splitting ensemble piece benefits from stand-out turns by Gig Young (as the bride's philandering father), Anne Jackson (as the object of his adulterous affections), and Richard Castellano as the groom's awkward but well-meaning Dad. Bob Dishy almost steals the movie as a would-be Casanova. Wonderful early `70s flavor, and look for a young Diane Keaton as the groom's unhappy sister-in-law.

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-06-21

Dated, yes, campy yes, made for TV cheap, yes,..but I love this movie. It just flat out works. The whole is much greater than the sum of it's parts. The "eat more veal Frank" table scene and the "what's the story Richy?" scenes in the house make me split my sides with laughter every time I see it. I've watched this movie a dozen times or more and it just gets better. Very funny, yet still engaging on more than just a comedy level, it does tug a bit at your heart at times and if you're getting a bit old it'll bring back some memories too.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Wedding Film.......2007-03-29

Big weddings, small weddings, eloping, runaway brides, etc.
What viewers get with LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS is a laugh riot of multiple situations occurring simultaneously set in the early '70s.
Characters drawn broadly, in the context of an Italian-WASP wedding that speaks to every ethnic group in any time period.
Watch and you see the nuanced performance of the late, great Richard Castellano (who most people recognize as the "Caporegime" Clemenza from the GODFATHER)as the blustery, tender-hearted father of the groom with the hilarious Bea Arthur as his doting wife.
Gig Young, Cloris Leachman as the stuffy, clueless parents of the bride, a very young and sexy Bonnie Bedelia.
Look carefully and you will see a very young Diane Keaton in one of her very first roles.
The story centers around an era when men and women co-habiting out of wedlock was still frowned upon, yet the young couple, obviously in love, become the participants in a very traditional wedding.
Today, we think of THE WEDDING CRASHERS, but this is in the era of THE GRADUATE, THE GODFATHER, etc. with no twist, just a lot of laughs.
One cannot help but hum along and shed a tear at the playing of the song,
LOVE LOOK AT THE TWO OF US, that subsequently became a big hit for the CARPENTERS.
A timeless classic that seems to be forgotten but will never seem dated or unfunny.
"So Richie, what's the story...?"

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Comedy.......2007-01-25

Viewing this film after a hiatus of some 40 years, I find it still one of my favorite comedies. Bea Arthur and Richard Castellano are outstanding in their character roles as is Gig Young- all representing the earlier generation coping with the exigencies of the "new" generation of the 60's. The entire cast turns in a fine performance and I would highly recommend this film as one of the best comedies of its genre.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Keane Fans .......2007-04-06

I was very pleased w/this DVD; Not only does it have 4 great video selections, there are 12-14 really strong live performances as well. Concert DVD's can be a mixed bag, but all the performances here are quite impressive. Most are from the CD 'Hopes and Fears', but there are several 'rarely heard' bonus tracks and a nice version of 'Hamburg Song' from 'Under The Iron Sea'. The interviews offer some insight into each song, and all the concert tracks sound great. Love the video for 'Bedshaped'...Simply amazing...Keane fans can't go wrong here....

5 out of 5 stars Only One Word Needed: Great!.......2006-11-24

Sorry for the outburst but I am SO glad I got this DVD. I am a HUGE Keane fan (ask anybody who knows me)but I wanted to know more about the band. Sure, I had googled them but it wasn't enough so I bought "Strangers." I was estatic to see it came with two discs, both packed with live performaces and a documentary. It was very interesting to see how the band started and got going. It was also very funny at times and I'd have to pause the DVD because I was laughing but didn't want to miss any good material. It was great to see, after worshipping these guys for months, that they're regular people who are dysfunctional but funny, restless but charming. I felt like a even bigger fan after watching this, which is always a good feeling. And it was really cool because I bought the DVD in winter 2005 and I heard Tim and Tom talking about songs from their next album (Under the Iron Sea) and I finally got to understand what they we're talking about 6 months later when they released the CD. Speaking of Tim, it was very intriguing to see him in the writing process and, as stated before, the discussion of songs. It's also great just to see Chaplin, because he's so cool and SUCH an amazing singer. Richard is a great drummer though I found it hard to connect with him. The band's personality really shines through in this DVD and it's so much fun to watch.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Funny and fresh with loads of info and performances, this DVD is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars A loving look at a fantastic band.......2006-10-08

This documentary, made by a long-time fan of the band, takes you through Keane's beginnings as a guitar band to its evolution to a piano/vocals focus. The bandmates provide insight into the long road between its first gig and the American tour featured in the film and you get a glimpse into the effects of success and endless touring. There are enough interview segments to get a sense of each performer and how they relate to each other as lifelong friends. And, of course, the gorgeous music of Keane is played throughout with lots of live concert clips and full versions of their songs as well. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Real good except..........2006-06-26

This would have been a really good dvd. Pretty much have watched the live shows, and it's nice to finally see them perform live. Haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing, but the menu set up was kinda... errr retarded. You'd have to sit through the documentary and wait 'til one button comes up to where you can access the music videos.

1 out of 5 stars Really bad layout.......2006-05-11

My primary HDTV is driven by an Xbox 360. Using a controller there is no way to access most of the footage. My other DVD player is on my computer. Once again the lack of a remote with 4 arrows keeps me from viewing the DVD. My daughters TV has a CyberHome DVD player that will not go into interactive mode using the remote. Thanks for the quirky interface, the guy who shoots the documentary it a wad.

I would love to watch this DVD as I think the band has alot of talent. The only thing I can watch is the 7 live tracks.
