The lavish 1948 production of Joan of Arc may not qualify as a great movie, but it scores a triumphant victory as a great DVD. Thanks to a stunning restoration by the renowned UCLA Film and Television Archive, this relic from Hollywood's golden age can now be appreciated in all its magnificent Technicolor glory, restored to its original theatrical length of 145 minutes after decades of truncated TV broadcasts. Under the direction of Victor Fleming (whose credits include Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz), this is a stodgily respectable mini-epic, adapted from Maxwell Anderson's acclaimed play Joan of Lorraine and giving 33-year-old Ingrid Bergman one of her quirkiest star turns as the 19-year-old "Maid of Lorraine," destined by divinely inspired fate to rescue imperiled France from British occupation, and face trial on charges of witchcraft. Winner of three Oscars (for cinematography and costumes, and an honorary award to Producer Walter Wanger for boosting Hollywood's "moral stature") and five nominations (including acting nods for Bergman and José Ferrer, making his screen debut as the French Dauphin), the film suffers from an abundance of talky exposition and stage-bound incident, but the battle scenes are still rousing, Bergman glowing beatifically in polished armor and surrounded by a seasoned cast of studio-era character players in a rampant case of Hollywood anachronism (somehow, Ward Bond just doesn't belong in medieval France!). If you get bored during the slow parts, you can always marvel at the pristine restoration, full of heavenly sunbeams, masterful matte paintings, and enough colorful detail to make most 1948-vintage films pale by comparison. Frame by gorgeous frame, martyrdom never had a classier showcase. --Jeff Shannon

A Fantastic Movie.......2007-05-27
Wow! This movie is truely awesome. A movie this good needs to be experienced more than once, and so will remain in my collection. Saint Joan of Arc, a "Child of God," who made no mistakes, save only one, which she was forgiven for. This is truely a heavy movie about a woman of great faith and love for God. Enough said. Take care and have a nice forever.
Ed.
a 35 year old swede plays an insipid little 17 year old frenchie: quelle masterpiece!.......2007-05-12
ingrid bergman was way too old and way too pretty for this part, but they figured they had a smash hit, i guess. the tale of the late medieval schizophrenic girl who somehow won a couple of battles (amazing what group psychosis can do, isnt it?) is told here in full pomp and splendor, but everything -- even jose ferrer in the seemingly unmessable up part of the dauphin -- falls flat. the most overrated woman in history seems to get bad movies made about her life regularly, and while this isnt as abominable as jean seberg & otto "premature" violating bernard shaw a decade later, its pretty bad.
A Classic Joan.......2007-03-08
This is the first version of Joan of Arc I viewed as a young girl. It is well done for the time period. Ingrid Bergman is fantastic as usual. I would recommend this movie to anyone.
inspiring!.......2007-01-26
I love this movie. The difference you can make when your called by God to make it, even if you think your a nobody! This old classic is better then all the remakes.
The Maid who was sent from Heaven to support her failing France..........2007-01-03
We are in 1429, period of the "Hundred Years War" between France and England... The story follows the well-known outlines of the short life of the 15th century French saint, Joan of Arc...
Guided by divine Voices, the visionary daughter of a plowman, Joan (Ingrid Bergman), wearing men's clothes, leaves Domremy her village town in Lorraine and takes her long journey to Chinon to meet the Dauphin Charles VII (Jose Ferrer).
Inspired by God to free France from the ravages of the invading English, the peasant girl persuades the indecisive Dauphin to recruit an army and run out the ruthless invaders clearing the way for him to be crown King of France...
Joan leads the French Army to victory over the English forces at Orleans and stands proudly besides her king - as she promised - at his coronation in Rheims' Cathedral...
The Maid's followers believed that she came from God and the Burgundians and English were stricken with fear at her success... But Charles was tricky, ambition and deceitful in his goals... A counterplot was at work as a mean truce is suddenly signed with England, frustrating Joan's zeal to rid France of the enemy...
In an ironic twist of fate, the Maid of Lorraine becomes a political prisoner... She is closely guarded and kept in irons, and is tried as a witch by an English-dominated church court...
With no council to aid her, except her Voices, we see the intrigued illiterate girl, pitted against Bishop Pierre Cauchon (Francis L. Sullivan) trained in all the complexities of legal exhausting questioning...
We may ask ourselves how so many ideas and intuitions are to be found in a person so simple as she was saintly... Joan is, above all things else, the wisdom of a good people... She is the people of France, the plain people of the countryside of Lorraine which is sweet and clean through the courage and faith of the people as much as through the smell of woods and orchards...
Ingrid Bergman portrays with deep conviction her role as the delicate innocent virgin who raised the spirit of the French to hope for better times... She curbed savage England and stopped the spoiling and burning of France... Bergman's smiling face invoked spiritual revelation, the required light of a charismatic true heroine...

Very Poignant and Uplifting.......2005-11-28
This is the first "modern" (I mean unconventional) mormon movie Ive seen.I was warned not to see this one because it may discourage me to go on a mission (they don't have to worry since im not going anyway, personal choice) or I may get turned off as a member.Well, they were wrong!I found this movie very uplifting and inspiring, everyone (people going on their mission or not) should watch this.Brandon Allen went to serve his mission in Sodom and Gomorrahlike Los Angeles. He had culture shock at first (he was from Kansas) being in a really different environment plus meeting some quirky fellow missionaries. There, they met different types of people from prostitutes to non believers.Elder Allen was becoming more and more discouraged, and without expecting it,wonderful things began to unfold (sorry can't give them away here).
Being surrounded with missionaries myself(im a Mormon by the way),I witnessed their hardships and at the same time the better part of being a missionary.I think this movie strongly hits close to home. This movie may "look" like a B-movie (because of its low budget, color and unfamiliar actors, this is a really poignant and well acted film.
Way too much whining!.......2005-09-21
This movie, in my experience does not accurately depict Mormon missionaries. I have never seen so many whiney children.
Condensed two years.......2005-02-13
There has been several LDS films lately and most deal with the mission experience. While the non LDS viewer might see all these films as unlikely portrayals, what they do represent is true to life except that the gamut of experiences is typically lived over the course of the two years that missioneries serve. When I first saw this I kept saying yeah but, yeah but. As I contemplated later, I thought to myself when was the last time that Miracles were part of your regular life? The answer is when I served as a full time Missionery. The Film "The best two years"
Is another very true to life portrayal of mission life, and the conversion of a missionery to service. The reason "God's Army" is not a 5 star is due to the budget of the film which resulted in some less than authentic looks. This film is probably moving for many former missioneries, but provides an interesting look at "those mormon boys".
Worth watching.......2005-01-11
The fact that this movie is clearly Mormon propaganda is likely to scare some people off. Many others will simply want to laugh through it (there are some pretty funny parts- listen carefully to the background music)The movie does, however, highlight some techniques that might be useful for more mainstream Christians. For one thing, it makes you stop and pay attention. Before watching "God's Army" most of us would turn a Mormon away from our door. Now we are inclined to invite him in and ask him questions. It's also true that however skewed their beliefs may be, they are extremely dedicated to the life that they are living, and they are willing to stand out. In fact, it is the result of their contrast to the society around them that they are able to grow. It makes one think, "How well is this leaven in the bread approach really working?" Perhaps we should begin to think more in terms of the kind of contrast society that Jesus set up. By distinguishing ourselves from the world, rather than integrating ourselves into it, we will free ourselves to become a light to the nations and attract people to our life.
First effort but not a very good one.......2004-10-03
I will try to rate this movie as unbiased as I can. It should be known that I am not a Mormon so I hoped folks out there don't think I am bit prejudice against the film based on faith.
Having wrote that, I would say that this movie proves to be very clumsily made. Its clear that a novice director is at work here, the editing isn't very strong and scenes seem to be cut piece parts that seem to be string together to make a whole. Its tell the story but it looked bit cheap.
The strong point of the movie proves to be the acting although I thought Richard Dutcher's role seem to be the weakest, maybe the director/actor isn't used to playing both roles yet. Scenes without him seem to be stronger then the scenes with him. Ironically, the movie centered around Dutcher's character and the effects he had on Matthew Brown's character who was losing his faith.
The movie also suffered from bad script, which also seem to be cut pieces string along to make a story. At times, it seem to skip a scene or two although I am not sure, it sure felt that way. The end scene where Brown' character met up and married the girl he met on the mission is a classical example of "make a wish" script writing. The entire sequence would have more meaning and impact if there was some sort of mutual chemisty and feeling between the two characters during their time in Los Angles but most of the movie shown them no more then just casual friends.
Obviously, this is a type of movie that can only pleased one narrow audience, the members of the LDS and even some of them it seem from the reviews, were not pleased. Non-members would probably find this movie bit overblown, preachy and bit one dimensional in nature. You might say that this movie is basically a LDS movie for the LDS members. Pretty sad that it is that, I really enjoyed Two Best Years which is another LDS movie about missionaries that had a broader appeal and a superior film.

No topic on the American socio-political landscape is more divisive than abortion, but in a way, Soldiers in the Army of God may actually bring reasonable folks on both sides of the issue together. That's because directors Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson's 70-minute documentary, made in 2000, chronicles the Army of God, a radical anti-abortion group who preach and practice violence as the best, indeed the only, means to end legal abortions, a stance that more moderate advocates on both ends of the spectrum must surely abhor. Granted, most of the people interviewed here make their cases calmly, even reasonably; they certainly don't come on like the fire-breathing fanatics their views might suggest. But there's not a lot to like about guys like Bob Lokey, an ex-con (he served 20 years for murder), an "activist" and smarmy hypocrite who claims he wouldn't harm a hair on an "abortionist"... but nor would he complain if someone else did; or the ultra-confident Neil Horsley, who does his propagandizing on the Internet (a vital source for spreading the word and identifying fellow protesters) and offers the usual argument that those who were killed merely got what they deserved. Regardless of one's position on abortion, the fact is that it's legal, and shooting people who perform them isn't. But these "soldiers'" belief that they are doing God's work muddies the waters, because faith is not fact; indeed, it is inarguable. As a result, Soldiers in the Army of God ultimately leaves one with the sinking feeling that this issue is irreconcilable. Take the example of Paul Hill, who in 1994 killed Dr. John Britton. Hill regarded this "abortionist" as a murderer, so he shot him and his escort; interviewed here, the utterly unrepentant Hill languishes on a Florida death row, awaiting his own death (he was given a lethal injection in September '03). And the infernal wheel goes 'round and 'round. --Sam Graham
Description
Many of the most extreme members of the anti-abortion movement reveal themselves to HBO cameras for the first time in this disturbing verite documentary. The film focuses primarily on "soldiers" in the Army of God, a pro-life group bonded together by the Internet, by organized rallies, and by a common belief that abortions must be stopped at all costs. In addition to intimate footage of Army members at their homes, in their cars and at gatherings, the film includes harrowing footage of high-profile crimes targeted at abortion clinics, most notably the 1993 murder of two abortion-clinic workers in Pensacola, Florida. The documentary also features an exclusive death-row interview with the man who committed these murders: Paul Hill, who has become a hero and martyr to many Army of God zealots.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely terrifying.......2007-05-04
I was slack-jawed during most of this excellently produced documentary, in which men (almost entirely men) discuss breaking the law in pursuit of their crazed "Christian" agenda. There were a couple of things which struck me particularly hard. First of all, again I say that almost all of these aborto-terrorists are men. It seems that none of them has ever been pregnant or had to deal with the emotions of keeping or getting rid of a pregnancy. What the hell are they doing in the debate? Second, the men all appeared to be completely sans women -- the lead loony said that God told him to stay away from women altogether. That's a convenient way of saying "I don't think any woman would be crazed enough to come anywhere near me". He also announced that on God's orders, he circumcized himself, "and I'm probably the only one who's done that and isn't insane." Now there's a wee bit of self-delusion. He is insane, and he is such an excellent representative of how crazed semi-fascists have taken over the Christian church in America. What a sad thing that is in a democracy. What a sad, sad thing, but thanks to the people who produced this documentary, which should open up many, many eyes.
Wow........2006-04-24
"Thou shalt not kill" is not a conditional statement, yet the Army of God, in their arrogance, decided they have the right to choose who deserves to live and die in this fascinating documentary. This film is an excellent exploration into how people, driven by the urge to "do good", commit horrible acts of violence(in other words: evil). The utter hypocrisy of their actions is breathtaking, if not ironic, as they condemn individuals they deem "murderers" while martyring people who murderer for their cause. A human, if disturbing, portrait, of faith and morality gone horribly awry. Judge not, lest ye be judged.
Excellent but dated.......2006-01-30
At the time this documentary was filmed, things were very different in the group portrayed. While giving an accurate look at some of the people involved, one could errorneously draw the conclusion that a couple of main people in this documentary are indicative of the whole.
Many things have happened within this group after the filming and those changes have relegated this mere archive footage. One should also be careful and separate a couple colorful characters from the whole as personal peccadilloes are not indicative of the main.
While this documentary's relevance is questionable, it does an excellent job of showing a little more personal view of some people who are generally and generically vilified for their moral and political views. The film crew was kind and while spending more time than necessary on certain subjects, they did let the AOG be itself; as much as the AOG can be itself while being filmed.
This is definitely worth watching, but remember, the camera still presents more perception than truth.
