A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-04

This movie is awesome! I've been wanting to get it for a long time and don't regreat a cent of it.

4 out of 5 stars Army of Darkness.......2007-05-18

This movie was great, very entertaining and funny. If you love Night of the Living Dead, this is even better.

1 out of 5 stars Without Embeth Davidtz, this movie is garbage.......2007-04-12

The only thing reedeemable about this movie is the beautiful Embeth Davidtz, without her, the movie is pathetic. Honestly, this movie is one of the worst I ever witnessed. "The Mummy" doesn't even equal its patheticness, and that is saying something!!

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE EVER!.......2007-03-29

Apparently for some reason, everyone loves this movie. They say watch it with fun friends. I did. It was so bad. There is no plot, it goes from one thing to another with no explanation. Unless you don't know a good movie from a bad one, don't get this. The "comedy" in it is so repeatative. He fought the mini version for it seemed like 10 minutes and he fought the deadites in the well for another half hour. The phrase it's so bad it's good don't even apply. It passed that point on how bad it is. The action is horrible, and you shouldn't waste your money or your time on the "greatness" this movie supposedly has. Disgrace to movies and horrible spin off of an H.P. Lovecraft theme.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie - bad transfer.......2007-02-28

I got this one mainly for the commentary track. The quality of the print was hit and miss. Yes, I know they added 15 minutes of footage from various sources, and that would account for some of the inconsistancy of the quality of the print, but there were other parts that are in the standard 82 min. version that just looked awful here. The Universal release isn't the long version, and there are no extras, but IMO the print was better. I understand the Boomstick edition looks even better, though I haven't seen it. Anchor Bay seems to have a history of using bad prints for their DVD releases, and this one would seem to fall into that category. I would recommend this for extreme fans only - just for the commentary, which is pretty good.

Product Description

Meet the Harunos, a rather unconventional, but happy and loving family nonetheless. They live in a small town in the mountains just out of Tokyo where life is good and quiet - but that doesn't mean they don't have their own little problems.

As 8-year old Sachiko (Maya Banno) tries to get rid of a giant version of herself who seems to pop up everywhere, her older brother Hajime (Takahiro Sato), privately wrestles with his love-struck heart. Meanwhile, their mother Yoshiko (Satomi Tezuka) is working hard, coming out of retirement as an animator, as her husband and professional hypnotist Nobuo (Tomokazu Miura) watches on with slight apprehension. Yoshiko's brother, Ayano (Tadanobu Asano) is just visiting his hometown and staying with the family, but also has ashidden agenda; he needs to come to terms with a romance that ended years ago. Even Nobuo's brother and successful manga artist Todoroki has his problems. It's his birthday soon and he wants to give himself something special. And lastly there's Grandpa, the most bizarre and perhaps the most perceptive of all, who continues to search for a better way to live life to the full.

Written, directed and edited by Katsuhito ISHII, The Taste of Tea is a unique and gentle family portrait tackling the universal themes of time, people and their lives.

I saw this movie in the theater in New York City. It is the best movie I have seen in a long time. I was laughing until I was crying at some points, and at other moments utterly moved by the genuine sentiment and lyricism.

Like Ozu's Tokyo Story, The Taste of Tea takes the long view of a Japanese family, though the eccentric Harunos are unconcerned with the moral quandaries Ozu's characters typically face. Director Katsuhito Ishii, known in America for his animated sequence in Kill Bill Pt. 2, gives the viewer a comedic slice of life in this artistic family's rural village. With a mother reentering the animation business, a musical grandfather conceptually akin to Yoko Ono, and a hypnotist father, siblings Hajime (Takahiro Sato) and Sachiko (Maya Banno) have the mental freedom to roam deep into imagined worlds that comprise the film's core. Hajime's infatuation with a girl at school becomes an obsession that bears fruit due to his commitment to meeting her. Sachiko's giant ghost follows her, leading her to believe that if she can master a back flip on the gym bars that she will scare the ghost away. The Taste of Tea relies upon odd, awkward moments of reflection or confusion. Hajime isn't sure what to make of his Uncle Ayano's (Tadanobu Asano) story involving a chicken egg in the forest. Similarly, Sachiko runs for her life when a man emerges out of the mud next to her. The absurdity in the narrative is underscored by visual impossibilities, for example a train rushing out of Hajime's head, and other bizarre live-action animation. Interestingly, each character's dilemma is based on external forces. Tensions between family members are non-existent in The Taste of Tea, reinforcing the idea that artistic minds must stick together in an increasingly unpredictable world. --Trinie Dalton

Considering how lame this sequel could have been, The Santa Clause 2 makes for a pleasant holiday diversion. It's got the familiar smell of Disney marketeering, and more than a few parents will object to this further embellishment of the St. Nick legend, but Tim Allen's amiable presence provides ample compensation. As a divorced dad who inherited the jolly man's job in The Santa Clause, Allen now faces another Yuletide challenge. According to the "Missus Clause" in his North Pole contract, he can't continue to be the real Santa until he gets married. As luck and five credited screenwriters would have it, Allen falls for the Scrooge-y principal (Elizabeth Mitchell) of his son's school, while a phony, power-hungry duplicate Santa wreaks havoc on the North Pole's overworked elves. It's all as sweet as spiced eggnog, with that warmed-over feel of a mandated sequel, but the Christmas spirit does prevail with the sound of sleigh bells and Allen's rosy-cheeked ho, ho, ho! --Jeff Shannon

    Description

Walt Disney Pictures presents an all-new comedy adventure overflowing with holiday cheer. Tim Allen reappears in SANTA CLAUSE 2, the hilarious sequel to everybody's holiday favorite. Scott Calvin (Allen) has been Santa Claus for the past eight years, and his loyal elves consider him the best one ever. But Scott's got problems. His son Charlie has landed on this year's "naughty" list, and if Scott doesn't marry by Christmas Eve -- one very, very short month away -- he'll stop being Santa forever. Embracing Christmas and the magic of family with heart, warmth, fun, and charm, SANTA CLAUSE 2 is classic holiday entertainment everybody will enjoy again and again

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-06-28

Wow, we just LOVE the Santa Clause movies. All 3 of them! Tim Allen is such a great actor and my kids adore him. My kids are 6 and 9 and they love all 3 of these movies and will watch them year round. We always sit as a family to watch them every December as well.

4 out of 5 stars The big guy has to get married.......2007-06-12

Scott Calvin is now the big guy. His son is on the naughty list.

    5 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2007-01-12

I just love all the Santa Clause movies and this may be my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars I am not sure what you are asking........2007-01-11

I am not sure what you are asking. You want a review of this item. It was a movie. Do I review the movie? If I do, then it was a great movie that my grandchildren enjoyed on Christmas Eve day along with the rest of my family. It was a wonderful family movie which I am sure we will watch again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Santa Wants a Wife for Christmas.......2007-01-08

Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) has settled into his new role as Santa Claus. In fact, he loves it. And kids the world over have never been happier.

Unfortunately, this Christmas Scott's hit a couple snags. First, his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) is acting up. In fact, after he's caught spray painting the school, he winds up on Santa's naughty list.

Even more pressing, elf Curtis (Spencer Breslin) has discovered another clause. It seems Santa needs a Mrs. Claus or he will stop being Santa. In fact, he's already loosing weight and returning to his original form. If he isn't married by Christmas, he'll cease being Santa forever.

Naturally, the month before Christmas is the busiest time of the year for Santa and the elves. So he leaves behind a robot duplicate of himself and heads to his ex-wife's house. He hopes to reconnect with Charlie and find someone willing to marry him. So why is the first person to catch his eye the Christmas hating principal of Charlie's school (Elizabeth Mitchell)? Will it work, or is Scott doomed to cease being Santa forever?

The first movie is one of my favorite Christmas films. In fact, I watch it every year. While this sequel doesn't capture all the charm of the original, this is still a fun movie. It's nice seeing the entire cast of the first movie back, and they do a good job. The climax is funny and sweet. And the special effects are wonderful.

This sequel is just a step down from the original. It's not a must watch, but if I have the time I enjoy it.

Wow, we just LOVE the Santa Clause movies. All 3 of them! Tim Allen is such a great actor and my kids adore him. My kids are 6 and 9 and they love all 3 of these movies and will watch them year round. We always sit as a family to watch them every December as well.

Scott Calvin is now the big guy. His son is on the naughty list.

3 out of 5 stars Not THAT bad.......2006-08-08

(2.5/5 stars) No, it is not a good film, but I have seen much, much worse. Drew Barrymore looks gorgeous, the ending is truly surprising (for better or for worse) and there is a decent supernatural element to it. I won't rehash the plot because others have already done so; rather, I will simply attempt to justify the rating I gave it. The entire film is amateurishly done, though I would give it an A for effort if that really mattered. The filmmakers were trying to make a thriller about an extremely mysterious young woman and the movie accomplishes that. Also, the energy almost makes up for the lack of talent and quality. However, the subtext concerning "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is an interesting idea better left on the drawing board, and the script could have used some tightening. Fans of horror films have grown accustomed to low budgets because films in the genre are rarely taken seriously. After watching films such as this, one can understand why. Nonetheless, a low budget is not an excuse to produce a low quality film. Filmmakers must work within their budgets and not provide signs that indicate any limitations. Lack of a budget doesn't bother me, but the filmmakers must have realized how ridiculous the effects at the end of the movie looked. To be taken more seriously, they could have revised the ending to avoid these effects. The fact these effects were left in the movie indicate to me this movie is meant to be fun, not earnest. Taken for what it is, it really isn't awful.

1 out of 5 stars hysterical, and then, just bad, mostly.......2005-12-12

i cannot, with good conscience recommend this movie.

please, look at it! it's awful!

drew barrymore, in her sad "poison ivy" stage, is a wretched performer. there are pothole plothole's all over the place. and it's itchy to watch the scene with her real mother, jaid barrymore. were they attempting reconcilliation through a b-movie?

oh! and the guy from adventures in babysitting, father of the bride & a few episodes of friends is in it, fumbling around too. where is that guy?

there's a tough broad friend, a spooky house & at one point SPOILER: drew splits in half all oogy and walks around like some really skinny anatomy horror movie thingy.

hey! now it sounds kind of good again.

    1 out of 5 stars a putrid stinker of a film.......2004-12-04

This has to be one of the worst movies I've ever wasted my time watching! Don't dispose a precious cent on this movie unless you are a gigantic Drew Barrymore fan and you are merely viewing the movie for the raw sex scenes and constant, random nudity. The storyline could have worked, yet the movie is pathetically low budget, the acting is horrid and the movie falls desperately flat. It is impossible to like this movie unless you are obsessively in love with Drew Barrymore and you want to watch her at her lowest point. It's so bad that I had to come here to vent about it online. The director was obviously a film school drop-out who offered the actors free cocaine and produces low budget porn.

4 out of 5 stars Good low budget film.......2004-11-30

If you take it in stride you may find this movie very entertaining. This movie does have gooding acting in it by all of the cast members and has star power.

4 out of 5 stars An overall interesting movie.......2004-06-23

Drew delivers a very good, believable performance. Throughout the movie, she keeps us in suspense, wondering whether the doppelganger truly exists or she is suffering from MPD (multiple personality disorder). Her supporting cast members also perform well but she definitely stands above them. The movie is not an award-winner by any means but the acting is good and the story, which is very well written, covers a subject that is refreshingly different...there are not many movies out there on the supernatural element of doppelgangers.
Unfortunately, this movie has been overlooked by many. If you like suspense/horror movies, give this a try...you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    4 out of 5 stars A little know gem.......2007-01-16

I caught this flick on cable a few years back and it always stayed with me. So, when I found it on Amazon for only five bucks I jumped at it.

The movie still holds up after all those years. Rachael Griffiths is great, and the story is timeless. It reminds me of another one of my favorites, "The Family Man" with Nicolas Cage.

If you're in the mood for a chick flick and have run through your collection, you won't be sorry if you add this one to the bunch.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2005-11-14

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time... addresses the question "what if" we had made other choices in our lives - How would our lives be different? What would stay the same?. I especially liked it because, unlike movies like "Family Man", it doesn't romanticize one path or another but rather shows the (realistic) highs and lows of being married vs. being single and how you can be happy with either life style.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie about parellel universes with the wonderful Rachel Griffiths!.......2005-09-20

If you discovered Rachel Griffiths on "Six Feet Under", or anywhere else for that matter, you know that she is a phenomenal actress with the ability to draw viewers in with her remarkable intensity. Few actresses can pull off a film like this one. Griffiths is in almost every single scene and yet we never get tired of seeing her. In fact, Griffiths is the kind of actress that intrigues you so much, that you cannot seem to stop watching her. Her beauty is strange. It's the kind that makes you wonder how she can be so plain one minute, yet so gorgeous the next. It's also the kind that exudes self-confidence while at the same time displaying incredible vulnerability.

The first time I saw this film it was aired on HBO after an episode of "Six Feet Under". At first, I thought the premise of the film might be a little too familiar. It almost seemed to echo IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and the Gwenyth Paltrow sleeper SLIDING DOORS, but after it was over, I discovered that this movie had a warm feeling that was definitely unique. I won't go into details as there are plenty of recaps available, but I will say that the film is about what it would be like to see two different versions or yourself, making two completely different sets of choices for each one.

ME MYSELF I gives viewers the feeling that life can turn out fine no matter which road we take. That is a comforting thought in today's society. Too often we question our choices, assigning a definitive wrong or right to whatever it is that we're choosing. Maybe, if we learn the lesson this film teaches, we won't be so skeptical the next time we're at a crossroad. We might just take a chance...and that chance just might be as good as the one we passed up.

4 out of 5 stars Rachel Griffiths in a rather decent "road not taken" movie.......2004-11-16

"Me Myself I" is yet another example of a film where the hero/ine gets a chance to see the road not taken. Although we can trace this particular genre back at least to Dickens "A Christmas Carol," the cinematic epitome remains, of course, "It's a Wonderful Life," where Frank Capra puts Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey through the hell of a world in which he was never born. Sometimes the hero/ine gets a chance to live their life over again from a pivotal point (e.g., "Peggy Sue Got Married," "Mr. Destiny"), and sometimes they find themselves living a different life (e.g., "The Family Man"). "Me Myself I" is an example of the latter.

In "Me Myself I" it is Pamela Drury (Rachel Griffiths) who gets to see what might have been. She has made it to the age of 30 without getting married, writing for a magazine, smoking too much, and repeating glossing over the problems in her life by repeatedly telling herself the big lie, "I deserve the best and I accept the best." But when her happily married best friend has a baby, Pamela rethinks her life. Maybe she could have that too, even though she does not particularly like babies. She even meets a guy (Sandy Winton), but he turns out to be married. Suddenly, Pamela is having second thoughts about what happened all those years ago when she turned down Robert (David Roberts).

The next thing she knows, Pamela is not paying attention to where she is going as she agonizes over her life, and she gets hit by a car. However, the driver of the car turns out to be herself, that is to say, the one who married Robert all those many years ago. This seems a rather natural occurrence given their state of minds, and so Pamela switches places with Pamela. This gives our heroine one big advantage over most of the movie characters who end up in her position. She knows what she is heading into, even if she knows nothing about taking care of kids or what it means to toilet train a toddler. For once, the character enters the situations full of neither hope nor terror, but simply wanting to know if the road not taken lead to a better life.

Despite this twist, most of the scenes in this 1999 film are standard ones given the genre. Pamela has to roll with the punches as she learns about her husband, her children, and the life she never had. One of the nice things about writer-director Pip Karmel's script is that it deals with the realities of a marriage instead of the cutesy way a woman in Pamela's predicament usually has to find out about being a wife and a mom. There are some surprises in store as she finds out that Pamela's life is not perfect. Her look at the life she could have had answers questions, but raises more.

As is almost always the case, the success of this film rests on the performance of the main character. Griffiths has to carry most of the film and while Karmel does not come up with any big moments, the little ones suffice. "Me Myself I" is not as deep as it might be, and you can interpret the lessons any way you want, but it seems to lead to the inevitable if not obvious conclusion that you should never be so busy with your life that you do not bother to live it. Like the double main character in "Sliding Doors," both Pamelas are living their lives at the same time, but we stick with the one we started with through the main part of the film. But I cannot help but wonder what the married Pamela thought about the life she could have lived. Again, there is more to explore here than the film actually explores, which just underscores why this genre continues to persist to this day and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars not for every taste.......2003-10-10

If you like sophisticated comedy with insightful and psychologically well-informed content, this is a movie for you. The filmmaker could have oversimplified either married life or single life, but didn't. She could have glorified one or the other, but didn't. Neither life is ideal. Neither lifestyle gives Pamela everything she wants and wanted. There are no easy answers and no easy way. Single or married, Pamela will have to work at it and to accept a less-than-ideal life. In the end, she does. And Rachel Griffiths, of course, is priceless!

3 out of 5 stars One for the Horror/Supernatural fans!.......2006-06-10

Alpha Video has released both versions of this interesting German silent film: the first one made in 1913 with Paul Wegener in the lead role, and this later 1926 remake starring Conrad Veidt. Obviously, filmmaking techniques developed rapidly in those 13 years, and silent films of the mid to late 1920s are much more in step with the modern day film format we are used to, making this 1926 version much more appealing to most viewers. The picture quality, while significantly better than the 1913 version, is still a little poor in general, and the modern synthesizer music, while appropriate to the eerie theme, is not always well suited. Nevertheless, the story itself might have enough value to outweigh these poor production aspects, especially for those fascinated by the horror/supernatural theme. Based on an old novel, "The Student of Prague" is an intriguing story about a young man, a university student, who is broke and desperate, and succumbs to the offer of a strange and sinister man who offers him a large amount of money. It turns out that he has, as it were, sold his soul to the devil by allowing the evil stranger to take the student's mirror reflection; his second self. After this event, the student no longer has a reflection in any mirror, which is a general theme that has re-occurred in horror/supernatural stories for a long time, and no doubt is rooted in ancient black magic rites involving mirrors. Having made a pact with the devil, the student's second self now appears as an apparition and it begins to ruin his life. German Expressionism techniques of dark shadows and strong contrasts add to the eerie atmosphere, and Conrad Veidt plays the role whole-souled - even when his soul steps out of the mirror and takes on a life of its own! After watching this 1926 version, I was able to go back and appreciate the 1913 version of "The Student of Prague" much more, even though it is only half the length of its later remake. Anyone keenly interested in this theme and German silent films who can overlook poor production quality on budget-priced labels might also like to compare both versions.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful movie, crummy DVD.......2005-10-24

Unfortunately, this is the only version of this film available on DVD, and like every other Alpha Video release it's a poor quality transfer from a video tape, complete with what look like VHS artifacts and no speed correction. The music is the same repetative synthesizer drivel used in Alpha's 1917 Student of Prague DVD, and except for a few chance moments it does not match the action on screen.

The film itself is WONDERFUL. One of my favorite silents, next to "The Man Who Laughs." Conrad Veidt's expressive performance carries the film with his depiction of both Balduin, a very complex young man struggling with his desires and limitations, and of his shadow self, given it's own life through a deal with the devil. Great cinematography and unusual camera work (for 1926) reminds me of Bunuel's "Fall of the House of Usher," another high quality horror film from the same period. There are some genuinely crepy scenes with the double and very emotional moments as Balduin realizes the full extent of what he's done.

In short, this DVD ranks five stars for content and zero stars for Alpha's lack of effort, but in my opinion is worth the low price to see such a fabulous film however flawed the presentation.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality transfer.......2004-12-14

This is an excellent film, which unfortunately has not been given a decent treatment by the distributor. I was very disapointed in the quality of the release- the picture quality is poor, inter-titles appear to be missing, and the score which has been added is just a repetition of long synth chords that don't match the action on-screen. It's a shame, because a film like this one deserves much better.
