4 out of 5 stars If you missed the show ..........2007-07-03

This is a very good chance to see Bruce with the Sessions Band if you missed the tour. I did, so I am happy they decided to put this DVD together. Overall, this is a very good show, which I am rating 9 over 10 or 4 stars and a half. Besides the songs from the Segger album, I particularly liked some of Bruce's old songs in new versions such as 'Atlantic City', 'Open All Night', 'Further On (Up the Road)', and specially 'Highway Patrolman', which is in my Top 5 Bruce favorite songs and that is presented here in what some have said the definitive version of it. Bruce holds his guitar like Johnny Cash, and his voice is sometimes very tired. One of his back singers takes over sometimes, and I really liked that. The Sessions band is outstanding. All members are terrific musicians and prove to be a true good companion for Bruce. The only one I don't like is Patti, who strums her guitar (I am starting thinking her guitar might be unplugged) and moans instead of singing. I am sorry to be so blunt, but I am already fed up with her and her posing, always keeping an eye 'on the prize' (Bruce) like someone is going to steal him from her. This is music, HIS music, and it looks like she just has to be there, no matter what. After watching this video and being annoyed by her any time she took over, I went back and watch the videos on the Seeger album, and there is one video where the band is out in the garden playing, and there she is .... clapping hands! C'mon please, give me a break! She also appeared in the documentary for the Born to run BoxSet (Wings for Wheels), when she was not even a member of the E Street Band and she had nothing to do with it! I used to like her, but not anymore. She always does the same and it bothers me. Other than that, again, this is a good show and I recommend it to anyone who likes Bruce Springsteen.
P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.

5 out of 5 stars Best music from Bruce in years.......2007-07-02

I first saw Bruce and his band at McDonough Arena in Georgetown in the mid-70's. I have a vivid memory of a wonderful night, ending with a raucus version of "Sea Cruise" that blew the doors off. This album brings back all of those great memories - and more. The musicianship is fantastic, the emotions of the whole band really come out. They love their work. It shows.

The band's performance in this instance is especially noteworthy for its masterful jazz harmonies, timbral balance, and rich polyphonic textures.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a change.......2007-07-01

Did you ever see the (admittedly horrible) Bob Dylan movie Masked And Anonymous. There are about a half dozen full length live songs from Bob and his band. The band is backed close together on the stage and 1 (yes, one!!) camera is held rock steady for the whole performance on the whole band. The people who make Bruce's videos could use a little of this. The constant cutting away after a second or two is ridiculous. With the obvious care that Bruce puts into his recordings I really think he is clueless about this. Someone is making these decisions for him and Bruce doesn't understand how much it detracts from his work. Someday he will watch these things with eyes wide open and realize what has been done. Hopefully this will happen before the next dvd release.

5 out of 5 stars Hushed Tones of a Haughiest Church,Wildness of a Brothel.......2007-06-28

"Last year' s Seeger Sessions was cut in just three days with a twelve-piece band that hadn't played together before. This Dublin stop, taped at the tail end of a seven-month tour, finds Bruce and the band going at the same material with a raw gusto that connects American traditions: mountain string bands, whorehouse Dixieland jazz, juke-joint rockabilly, Western swing and E Street soul. Across two CDs drawn from three concerts, Springsteen rips up old folk songs and revises nine slices of his back catalog -At home, the Sessions Band had trouble selling out Asbury Park. Overseas, they were greeted as heroes, and this is the proof of their heroism." ANDY GREENE

While I was watching this DVD, I was so enthralled and excited that I emailed my best friend about the experience. This DVD, in my opnion, is in the Top Five Concert DVD's of all time. The Sessions Band with Bruce Springsteen came together. The excitement and sheer joy of the event is palpable. Bruce Springsteen is a passionate performer who enjoys what he's doing, and he enjoys his audience as well. There was a sense of togetherness and intensity between the Sessions Band and Bruce and Patti Scalfia. The sound is fantastic, the crowd crackles with enthusiasm, and these musicians play without killing the flow.

This DVD was shot at The Point Theatre, in Dublin,Ireland. There were thousands of pumped Irish inside. Out on the stage comes a sixteen piece band armed with fiddles, trumpets, guitars and much more. The leader is one of the greatest performers: Bruce Springsteen. To start the night off they belt out Springsteen's own 'Atlantic City'. They end with a superb rendition of 'American Land'. I love nearly everything about this DVD. I strongly recommend 'Open All Night'. 9 minutes long, full of vocal and instrument solos it is one of the stand out sessio 'O Mary Don't You Weep,' is one of the best songs from Seeger, and it is stunning on this set. 'Pay Me My Money Down' and 'Jacob's Ladder' were highlights. 'Highway Patrolman' always had the markings of a country song. 'Long Time Comin' was superb. There are some powerful moments. The beautiful 'When The Saints Go Marching In,' with its shared lead vocals, goes into the raucous 'This Little Light Of Mine,' and then back to Bruce's own 'American Land.' 'If I Should Fall Behind' sung by Springsteen and Patti Scalfia was mesmorizing and beautiful. The show ends with an emotional and fitting 'We Shall Overcome.'

Mat Brewster: sums up this DVD the best: "It is both holy and profane. It has the hushed tones of the haughtiest church, and the wild secularism of the Saturday night brothel." Yessir, that's exactly right.

This concert was a once in a lifetime event. The stars were all aligned and everything came together. On the DVD just listen to the crowd reaction, the spontaneous singalongs, the sheer joy of the event. All those happy and lucky folks knew what was goin' on.

Heartily, Heartily Recommeded. prisrob 6-28-06

Live in Dublin

We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions

4 out of 5 stars Great Night of American Protest Music.......2007-06-26

Recorded live in Dublin, Bruce Sprinsteen and the Sessions Band present a rousing celebration of American song. This is absolutely the best band Springsteen has played with and finally Columbia has got it right. The concert was filmed over the course of three shows in November 2006 at the Point in Dublin.

The stage had the look of a American Tent Show with the players side lit. The concert was captured on nine cameras in high definition. From the angry version of Atlantic City to a new version of Blinded By the Light the show is pure magic. You won't want to miss this collection of rare moments and great songs from the Seeger Sessions.

Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Music and Lyrics is frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shared a deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Hugh & Drew --A Winning Team!!!.......2007-07-01

After seeing this movie all I have to say is I hope Hugh and Drew will continue to pair up again in other movies. Their onscreen chemistry was unmistakable. And besides the great music heard throughout the supporting cast Brad Garrett, Haley Bennet, Kristen Johnson, and Campbell Scott was equally amazing. For people who don't like Hugh Grant, this movie will change your mind!!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome and Romantic.......2007-06-30

There are good types of movies you can see. Different types. Not just action/adventure/fantasy films like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Harry Potter," but there are some comedies like spoof, and others are romantic comedies.

I have to admit that one of the first most calmest things of a movie genre is a romantic comedy. Especially, when there's lots of love songs. So, watching a movie like "Music and Lyrics," perhaps, you should be entertained with lots of love, excitement and joy through a romantic comedy.

"Music and Lyrics" opens up with Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) singing the song with his band in an 80's style music video called "Pop! Goes My Heart." And that's what makes a movie like "Music and Lyrics" shine, and for the lots of its parts, it works.

The movie tells the story about Alex Fletcher, who is in a band. He is one of the most popular bandsman. He one days meets a lovely woman, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), when Sophie waters the plants in his house. Together, they come for a good song to write for them, as singers, to perform.

But on the other hand, a young pop star, by the name of Cora Coleman (Haley Bennett) wants to have Fletcher write another song for her. Now, see that's one thing for Alex to work it out with Sophie, maybe yeah, along with his businessman, Chris Riley (Brad Garrett). But their work has brought them faith, friendship and love.

Honestly by trying to be a movie critic, I can know of old romantic comedies, like "Meet the Parents" and "50 First Dates," that I found "Music and Lyrics" to be charming. It has plenty of appropriate humor for the teens, yet kids can try to understand the humor at age 10.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are great together as the lovely romantic comedy couple. They perform a great performance and their singing is incredible. When it comes to music, they are both absolute geniouses, and that's what a type of a movie "Music and Lyrics" should be like. But another great star of the film is Brad Garrett as Alex's businessman, Chris Riley. He sure is funny with his funny humor, and that's another thing that shouldn't stop you from seeing "Music and Lyrics."

If you like romantic comedies, you should definitely enjoy "Music and Lyrics." There's plenty of humor for the teenagers and kids who are older than 10, maybe 8 or 9, should enjoy this movie. I, for one, can take this movie with a lot of movement and feel, and that's what you should get with a movie like "Music and Lyrics."

5 out of 5 stars No surprises equal Surprisingly good!.......2007-06-29

This movie was cutesy, campy and trite. It was a cliche parody of itself from the beginning. And that is part of what makes it so wonderful. It doesn't try to pretend to be something it't not.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are thrown together in the oddest and most unlikely of circumstances when Grant, a throwback to the 80's pop music scene, is offered a chance to write a song for an un-and-coming 21st century teen queen that is an almost annoyingly accurate parody of Shakira, Christina Aguilara and a host of other would be starlets you could name.

When a struggling Grant can't seem to find the words to express his heart's melody, Barrymore walks in completing a pairing that is as wonderful personally as they are professionally.

This is a darling comedy/drama/romance/whatever you'd like to call it... I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Cute boy meets girl movie!!.......2007-06-29

This is an adorable boy meets girl type of movie. I had heard through friends that this was a great movie but was even more pleasantly surprised after watching it! Great feel good movie and wonderful satire of the 80's music scene.......especially love the opening video clip!!!!

5 out of 5 stars my new favorite movie.......2007-06-28

What's not to love about this movie? It's witty, fun, funny, and a great story. When you break it all down the films just down right entertaining. It is rare, these days, to find a film that has both a captivating storyline and the ability to have you rolling on the ground laughing. It is even rarer to find a movie that you can watch over and over again without tiring of it.

Let me explain; Music and Lyrics is almost exactly like a good song. The first time you hear it, you think 'hey, this is catchy' and you decided that you like it. The next time you listen to it you pay attention to the lyrics, and find out that you love the song even more. I realize I stole a metaphor from the movie itself, but it's true. The first time you watch the film you are sucked into the story; from the very first panel you are captivated. It's just so absurd yet so clever that you can't turn away. The banter in the film is so entertaining, but since you won't catch everything in the first sitting you'll want to watch it again. This time paying more attention to the banter, you'll be busting stitches as you listen to what these people are saying.

Hugh Grant is brilliant and Drew Barrymore pulled off her role flawlessly. The two main protagonists have so much chemistry everything just clicks. They defiantly found all the right people for this movie, even Brad Garrett, who didn't have much of a lime light role, was perfect. Whoever cast this movie is a genius, everything just works.

Music and Lyrics follows the life of a former 1980's pop star named Alex Fletcher. He was a big deal back in the day, but after his boy band broke up he fell out of the mainstream spotlight. Now he works as a 'has-been' act performing in hotel showrooms, state fairs, and amusement parks for his now middle age fan base. However, he won't be able to keep this up for long since new 'old acts' like the Spice Girls are popping up on his territory and stealing the spot light. To reclaim some glory Fletcher teams up with Cora Corman, the current reigning pop sensation, for a duet...only one problem, Fletcher has to write the song by Friday. He teams up with the girl who waters his plants, Sophie Fisher, to write a hit duet that Cora will approve of.

Music and Lyrics is defiantly a worth while investment for any movie lover. I've watched it four times since buying the DVD last week, and every single time I watch I find something new and hilarious that I had missed in the first few sittings. If you love straight face comedy, witty banter, or simply good movies...you must add this film to your collection. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to go with the series of three Anthology double-CD albums, this set of eight documentary tapes has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns's expansive projects. Still, unless you are either a historian or a truly committed fan, you'll find yourself with way more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs," the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. The tapes give a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

I love, love the Beatles, and this DVD set is awesome. I bought it as a gift for my sister, but I watch it too.

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-05-22

People, please. What could be more entertaining than hours upon hours of the Beatles telling their story? I have watched this many times, and never tire of it. If you are a fan, you are missing out if you don't see this. And the bonus material is great too - Paul George and Ringo jamming and reminscing - wow!

4 out of 5 stars A great bargain.......2007-05-16

This Beatles Anthology DVD set is a great bargain because when it originally came out in the mid 90's on VHS tapes it was about $120 more. I still have a catalog from then to prove it. I was very impressed with the sound quality. The best sound quality I've ever heard Beatles music presented in. Makes me wish my old Beatles CDs sounded that good. On alot of my other DVD's I have to crank the volume way up to get any decent audio. The only thing I didn't like is that during some of the songs like "Revolution" & "Hey Jude" there is talking. I'm interested in what they have to say but not during the songs. And it doesn't seem to have a feature where you can just play the music videos. But I guess it's supposed to be a documentary & not a collection of music videos. Also I seem to recall some minor scenes when I saw it on TV in 1995 that weren't on the DVD, like the reunited Beatles in the 90's admiring one of the member's fancy car.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Anthology.......2007-05-16

This was a great price for a great product. I have really enjoyed watching all the episodes and learning more about the Beatles. The interviews with each of the members help give a personal perspective to the events surrounding the Beatles' amazing popularity. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Any Beatles Fan.......2007-04-23

Anthology is the history of the Beatles as told by the Beatles. It is the story of the Beatles from when they were young boys in Liverpool to when they recorded their last album, and everything in between. It is not only told through their words and interviews, but by their music, their movies and live performances, including their first concert at Shea Stadium and their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, just to name a few. Anthology also comes with a bonus disc of extras which includes the making of Anthology and the recording of the two latest Beatles singles, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Anthology is 10 hours of pure joy for anyone who likes the Beatles. Just sit back, watch, listen and enjoy!

It's virtually impossible to approach No Direction Home without a cluster of fixed ideas. Who doesn't have their own private Dylan? The true excellence of Martin Scorsese's achievement lies in how his documentary shakes us free of our comfortable assumptions. In the process, it plays out on several levels at once, each taking shape as an unfailingly fascinating narrative. There is, of course, the central story of an individual genius staking out his artistic identity. But along with this Bildungsroman come other threads and contexts: most notably, the role of popular culture in postwar America, art's self-reliance versus its social responsibilities, and fans' complicity with the publicity machine in sustaining myths. All of these threads reinforce each other, together weaving the film's intricate texture.

Scorsese's 200-plus-minute focus on Dylan's earliest years allows for a portrayal of unprecedented depth, with multiple angles: a rich composite photo is the result. The main narrative has an epic quality: it moves from Dylan growing up in cold-war Minnesota through Greenwich Village coffeehouses and the Newport Folk Festival, climaxing in the controversial 1966 U.K. tour that crowned a period of unbridled and explosive creativity. In his transition from Robert Allen Zimmerman to Bob Dylan, we observe him concocting his impossible-to-describe, unique combination of the topical with the archaic, like an ancient oracle. Scorsese was able to access previously unseen footage from the Dylan archives, including performances, press conferences, and recording sessions. He also uses interviews with Dylan's friends, ex-friends, and fellow artists, and, intriguingly, with the notoriously reclusive Dylan himself (who looks back to provide glosses on the early years), fusing what could have turned into a tiresome series of digressions and tangents into a powerful whole as enlightening, eccentric, contradictory, and ultimately irreducible as its subject.

Some of the deeply personal bits remain unrevealed, but Dylan's preternatural self-assurance acquires a slightly self-deprecating, even comic edge via some of his reflective comments. Alongside the arrogance, we see touching moments of the young artist's reverence for Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash. Joan Baez, in a poignant confessional mood, comes off well, and the late Allen Ginsberg is so seraphically charming he almost steals the show a few times. A crucial throughline is Dylan's hunger for recognition and ability to shape perceptions so that would be singled out as not just another dime-a-dozen folk singer. It's illuminating--particularly for those familiar with the artist's latter-day aloofness on stage--to see his reactions to audience booing in the wake of his "betrayal" in this fuller context. No Direction Home also makes clear--in a way that wasn't possible in D.A. Pennebaker's iconic Don't Look Back--how Dylan's ability to manipulate his persona always, at its core, protects the urge for expression: Dylan's ultimate mandate, as an artist, is never to be pinned down. As Scorsese masterfully shows, the myth around Dylan only grows bigger the more we discover about him. --Thomas May

DVD features: This two-disc set of Scorsese's full two-part documentary includes treats such as Dylan working on a song at his hotel during the UK tour as well as performing several songs as in concert or on TV.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for what it is.......2007-03-20

This documetary was absolutely fascinating and very well executed in every way. That being said, the only thing that was a slight disappointment was that this masterful filmmaker either couldn't or chose not to cover the entire breadth of the career of this truly compelling artist. It covers only the 1960's; granted the time when Dylan was at probably at the peak of his creative powers, but that is only equal to about 1/4 the whole story. At a running time of almost 4 hours, I personally would have liked to see a more complete portrait of the man & his life. That is my only complaint, though. I can still say this film was nothing less than absoluetly riveting and one of the best documetaries I have ever seen and probably ever will see.

5 out of 5 stars portrait of a mythic young artist and then some...........2007-03-16

You don't have to be a Dylanologist or even a generational fellow traveler (though it doesn't hurt) to be completely captivated by Martin Scorcese's 200 min. documentary of the magnetic early career of the legendary artist. With a carefully textured combination of archival footage- some never seen before- and contemporary interviews, including a revealing and engaging running commentary by the notoriously elusive subject himself, Scorsese portrays in fascinating detail the unlikely and uncanny transformation of the small town Bobby Zimmerman into the daemonic lyrical genius whose clairvoyant creative fusion with the nascent Sixties' zeitgeist shaped and catalyzed a momentous cultural tipping point like no other artist of his time. It is a great story told by a master story teller.

For me, however, the ultimate achievement of this film goes beyond its vivid portrait of a mythic young artist. It is the nagging and even haunting question that the film eventually leaves us with; the indecipherable mystery- in plain sight- of Dylan himself.

The genius of Scorcese is what he is able to show us. That there is such a thing as an artistic charismatic; that there are larger than life phantoms who appear seemingly out of nowhere, whose mesmerizing, mercurial incandescence can manifest a preternatural subjectivity so intense and at the same time so permeable they are able, in the swirling ebb and flow of their creativity, to transfigure themselves over and over again at will. In doing so they are able to bring their art to a white hot heat that galvanizes and transfigures the imagination of almost everybody it touches, and, after the fire has subsided, leaves an indelible stamp that even they do not understand.

5 out of 5 stars Dylan's a Riot.......2007-03-14

Classic Dylan quotes:
(1) Dense interviewer: "How many other folk singers have you influenced?"
Dylan: "136"
(2) Interviewer: "Do you think Donovan writes good folk songs?"
Dylan: "No... but he's a nice guy"
(3) Interviewer: "Do you consider yourself primarily a poet or a singer?"
Dylan: "I consider myself primarily a song and dance man"
(4) Interviewer: "Are you for or against the war?"
Dylan: "Yes"
(5) Joan Baez: "How come you don't want to sing on stage with me, Bobby?"
Dylan: "Don't take this the wrong way, but I hate your voice"
(6) Interviewer: "Does electric music hurt your ears?"
Dylan: "What?"
(7) Dylan: "People try to figure out the meaning of my songs. I don't even know what they mean"
(8) Don Rickles at a function, to Dylan: "You'll make it in this business if you'll just stop mumbling."
(9) Interviewer: "Why do you smoke cigarettes?"
Dylan: "What else are you going to do with cigarettes?"
(10) Interviewer: "What's it like being a Jew from Minnesota?"
Dylan: "Not sure, I've never been a Jew from anywhere else."
(11) Interviewer: "What were you trying to say in 'Blowin in the Wind'?"
Dylan: "I don't remember"

4 out of 5 stars Masterful portrait of the man who is mercury..........2007-01-27

...Meaning you can't easily pin him down. Yet between Scorsese's excellent documentary & Dylan's own Chronciles (Vol.1) this is as close a revealing display of 'who'/'what' Dylan is, and how that means different things to everyone interested in him and his art. I think the film brilliantly explores the facts, myths, contrivances, and oh yeah, impact the man's music and the path it cut through American culture and beyond. His impact IS so immense that it's easy to forget that he's just a man with a guitar/piano, a pen/typewriter, scraps of paper and cigarettes who has somehow been able to filter the complexities of humanity - be it love, anger, fear, outrage, compassion, sarcasm, loneliness, hope and humor via deceptively simple music and incredible poetry. He is a mirror, but not always the reflection of that mirror. As he sang in 'The Man in Me' (New Morning) "The man in me will hide sometimes to keep from bein' seen/But that's just because he doesn't want to turn into some machine". Still, Dylan is always an open book to anyone - whether or not you are of his generation, ignored him at the time this film explores, were born after this era (I was born in early 1968 in Rochester - a day's drive from his base at the time) or you have only recently discovered him. That is a hallmark of great art and a great artist - there's always something different you find everytime you tap into it.

Scorsese's research into his subject is excellent - from interviews (starting with Dylan himself) to contemporaries both alive and gone (Ginsberg, Van Ronk), thoughtfully plucked film footage including from 'Eat The Document'(including some outtakes(?)) not surprising since Scorsese as a young man edited both Pennebaker's film of the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 and the documentary of Woodstock. There are many revealing moments, too numerous to list here and many more questions raised about the relevence of the artist to late-twentieth century, cold-war era culture.

The pace is perfect, the threads many and artfully woven together. And stands up well to repeated viewing as a result. However, I take one star away because a discussion/exploration of the apex of his gradually frenzied pace and output - 'Blonde On Blonde' is *completely* omitted. I'm still scratching my head about that one. The record that best illustrates the genius and contradictions of the end of the era the film look at isn't even given a passing mention! Why? Not particularly interested? Had to cut any segment on it out to make the original TV broadcast time limit? Having said that, this is my sole disappointment with what otherwise is a fruitful and fascinating attempt to nail down the droplet of genius that was/is Robert Allen Zimmerman/Bob Dylan.

4 out of 5 stars "Not as represented".......2007-01-20

"Not as represented" is the phrase used when rating a seller on Amazon.

"No Direction Home" could be validly advertised as concentrating only on the earliest part of Dylan's long career. If it is to be part of a continuing series on the artist, it would be fantastic. But:

The first disk is fascinating. The controversy with the folk purists takes up quite a bit of time.

Unfortunately, the second disk deals with nothing but an old and unimportant controversy. Fewer whining fans and more of Dylan's recent career would have been welcome. Dylan's final impatience at the constant requests for his viewpoints on the whole silly business was very understandable. It ends up being an older fan's documentary about music politics.

The man has moved on. If this documentary was truly about a whole career, why, as my husband said, was there no "Blood on The Tracks"?

When Scorsese finishes the documentary he could just keep Dylan's performances on the second disk and flip the rest. Considering the length of Dylan's career, he's probably going to need the disk space.

The first disk is a treasure -- probably the reason the second disk was such a disappointment.

A solid and entertaining biopic, Walk the Line works less as a movie than an actors' showcase for its stars. Joaquin Phoenix's total immersion into the skin of singer Johnny Cash is startling--watching it, you can't believe this is the same guy who whined about being "vexed" in Gladiator. As he evolves from a farm boy to gospel croonin' plunker to the Man in Black, Phoenix disappears into Cash's deep baritone, his way of slinging the guitar onto his back, and his hunched-up style of strumming. But it's more than just picking up mannerisms: Phoenix also sings as Johnny Cash, and it's quite impressive.

The story of how Johnny Cash became Johnny Cash traces from his childhood under a distant father (Robert Patrick) to his early attempts at a music career, during which he married his girlfriend Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin). During a tour with the likes of Elvis (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne), he encounters singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), and his love for her--and her rejection of him through the years--spurs him into drugs, drinking, and depression. As with most movies based on real-life singers, as his popularity grows, the women come a-flockin', and the childhood demons surface. Witherspoon, who matches Phoenix drawl for drawl, plays June both as a sassy spitfire whose charm breaks your heart, and as a sympathetic friend who tries to help Cash get over--well, her. The love story is what endures, but the movie comes most alive during its musical numbers, and even if you're not a country fan, it may just get you to run out and buy a Johnny Cash album.--Ellen A. Kim

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The story of Johnny and June.......2007-06-24

I did not expect much of this bio-pic because I think it is almost impossible to make a good movie about an artist which not only shows the events of his life but also lets a viewer to take a peak inside that artist's mind to show the creative process with all its tension, uncertainty, selfishness and self-centering of an artist. In this regard, "Walk the Line" is nothing special but as a love story, it is wonderful from the first time young Johnny Cash and June Carter met during the show and she got strapped in his guitar until his proposal many years later on the stage (the only place she allowed him to talk to her). Both Phoenix and Witherspoon deserved the highest praise for their performances that were heartfelt, beautiful, sincere, and emotional. I never been a huge fan of Reese even though I always admitted that she had the acting talent ("Election") but with her role in "Walk the Line" and with her acceptance speech, she has earned my respect and admiration. Phoenix was as good as Reese and the chemistry between them was absolutely real.

4 out of 5 stars Walk the Line.......2007-06-22

I am not extremely versed on the life and times of this great musician, so I do not know how critical I can really be when it comes to inaccuracies or not. The strongest points aside from the story however, are the performances by Phoenix and Witherspoon. These two young people deserve a round of applause for their hard work in doing the best they could to portray the characters they represent in this movie. I enjoyed the story of Johnny's past including little details, like his family surviving a flood and of course the traumatic event of him losing his brother which changed his relationship with his father, which seemed somewhat frayed to begin with. The set designers did a great job in really making you feel like you were back in that time period as well. Overall a very enjoyable film that covers a lot of the roads that Cash walked.

5 out of 5 stars Truly mesmerizing from start to finish, a film one won't soon forget..........2007-06-21

Despite the fact that `Ray' was just released the year prior to critical acclaim, even winning an Oscar or two, and the fact that the life story of Johnny Cash is in a way very similar the film `Walk the Line' does a brilliant job of making this life story all that much more compelling and entertaining than last years submission. This is due in large part to the fantastic performances of the entire cast, most notably Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and the Oscar snubbed Ginnifer Goodwin who brilliantly balances support, frustration and sympathy as Cash's ex wife Vivian. James Mangold has that same eye for detail as Hackford possessed in `Ray' but he ups the ante by fleshing out not only the demons that corrupted Cash's soul but also the angel that saved him in the end, notably June Carter.

Right off the bat we are introduced to the Cash household and immediately the lines are drawn as in who the supportive parent and who the dominating overbearing parent is, and when the tragic death of Johnny's older brother shakes things up within that household no one is ever truly the same afterward. Racked with guilt for not being there when he was hurt and or being the surviving sibling Johnny lived the majority of his life with suppressed grief and constant dissatisfaction with any of his many accomplishments. The film beautifully flows through his adolescent life in the army, his early life married sweetheart Vivian and then the early points in his career until fame and fortune drove Johnny to drugs and, you guessed it, women.

But it was one woman who stole his heart and cured his soul, and that was June Carter, played brilliantly by Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon. Her charisma, charm and sincerity helped tame a tortured man and gave him reason to believe in himself and in the prospect of living a happy and fulfilling life once and for all. The film chronicles their love affair from its rocky start, shaky middle and everlasting end and it does so with such elegance and patience that the viewer becomes so invested in these characters as people and we begin to sympathize, rationalize and relate to their very souls. Phoenix is a force to be reckoned with as he attacks Cash's very being with such reverence and determination that I felt I witnessed the birth of a true star, and Witherspoon earned her Oscar with the same fiery determination evident in her co-star.

The supporting players all pull their weight as well, from Ginnifer Goodwin's Oscar worthy performance to Robert Patrick's sinister father, the man we loathe in entirety yet learn isn't without saving, as well as the entire cast of young actors and musicians all help create a feeling and a mood that perfectly compliments the films purpose. Not a single performance is forced, out of place or unworthy of mention.

Another highlight is the music, all of which was sung by the actual actors themselves, which is another step-up from last years `Ray'. Both Joaquin and Reese devour each sung line with enthusiasm and pure talent and it also helps cement them into their characters, fleshing out both Johnny and June and making them more real. These are in no way shape or form mere imitations. Both Phoenix and Witherspoon created these characters brilliantly and beautifully. From the accurate sets to the costumes and stage performances `Walk the Line' is a fantastic biopic complete with acting bravado and a script that truly brings these legends to life.

4 out of 5 stars Fine performances, episodic storytelling.......2007-05-31

Stars Phoenix and Witherspoon are the movie. Their performances are top-drawer as, surprisingly, is their singing. Phoenix worked hard to master the tics and idiosyncracies of Johnny Cash. In fact, having seen Cash in concert on several occasions, I occasionally felt that some of the signature gestures, such as the pout and guitar slinging were a bit overdone.

The storyline wasn't all that engrossing. Too much emphasis for me on a few selected episodes from Cash's life and nothing at all mentioned about many of Cash's excesses.

Johnny Cash was a solid performer and also a man who made many poor choices in his life and lived with them. I don't think he would have been offended to see incidents like his firing by Grand Ole Opry included in the film, considering that he more than made up for that behavior in later years.

Overall though, it's a pretty good film.

Jerry

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Oscar worthy.......2007-05-14

Joaquin Phoenix should also have won the Oscar for this moving. His part was far and away more difficult and accomplished far better than his co-star's. His voice, both spoken and singing, was absolutely astoundingly similar to Johnny Cash's. And his guitar playing was phenomenal. I believe Johnny himself would have been impressed. This is an excellent film with some insights into the inside of country music and its stars. However, it depicts June Cash as having had pre-marital six with Johnny Cash, which doesn't ring true with me, nor, I believe, did it ring with June Carter Cash's actual life experience. It's too bad when film-makers have to inject falsehoods to attempt to sell movies, especially when it didn't depict acurately Johnny's acute struggles with drugs. I suppose that part of his life was, perhaps, glossed over a bit to not tarnish his later life reputation and in deference to his death. Other than that, all in all, it was a good movie with an absolutely wonderful soundtrack. I did enjoy it a great deal.

Harry Nilsson wrote the entirely hummable songs (including the hit, "Me and My Arrow") for this charming, 1971 animation feature about a boy with a round head who is banished from the land of pointy-headed people. An allegory about nonconformism presented in a delightful way, this is a treat for everybody. Ringo Starr, the late Nilsson's old pal, narrates. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Point.......2007-06-26

Great moral story and wonderful music. Harry Nilsson did an excellent job with this show. Have seen it several times on TV many moons back, and love watching it every time!

1 out of 5 stars i saw the originsl on tv.......2007-05-13

loved the original with Dustin Hoffman narating, magical. This version just sucks, Ringos naration is sooo bad it hurts, so sad you have destroyed my memories. Avoid

4 out of 5 stars Blast from my childhood!.......2007-04-12

I never thought I would find this film again! Although I saw the original (first) version as a child, this was enough to bring back some very vivid memories of watching "The Point" on TV at my grandmother's house. I even remembered the words to the song! This film is so 70's, so retro in mood and music. The plot moved slower than I remembered, but it was still very special to see it again after 35 years.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for every film library.......2007-04-09

This is a delightful and pointed Animated piece for Children and Adults. The music is terrific, by Harry Nilsson, a shame we lost him so young. The narration is by Ringo Starr, who was always my favorite. Watch this with or without your kids or parents. Invite the neighbors so they won't complain when you turn the volume up. Me and My Arrow. Enjoy.

This is one of those movies you watched as a child and will want to watch again as an adult. Me for example: I went out with a few friends came home slightly tipsy. And all of a sudden I thought I want to watch that movie... The one with the chipmunks and singing and traveling the world. That thought stuck in my head for WEEKS. It took me awhile to find, but it is well worth it. I think I love this movie even more than I did as a child.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!.......2007-04-11

Ummm, I have LOVED this movie since I was a kid!! I loved it when I was in high school and now...I have to say, it is even better from an adults point of view!! I am SO happy that my kids can grow up watching it as well!! Thank goodness for kids movies that adults can watch, enjoy and laugh hysterically at as well!! OWN THIS MOVIE!!!! LOL

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-03-17

This movie was one of my favorites as a child and I just recently bought and watched it... It was as good as I remembered it. To top it all off, my daughter (age 1.5) LOVED the movie. She danced when they performed songs and everytime she tried to go play during the movie got distracted and stared back at the screen in mid walk. I would definately recommend this movie to "kids" of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars good times.......2007-03-09

i remember Cartoon Network showing this movie. I enjoyed watching it, and i was so pleased that they finally had it on dvd. Makes me smile with great music. The animation is real good compare to the tv series. The Chipettes are in the movie too =)

5 out of 5 stars The Chipmunk Movie.......2007-03-08

I loved this movie when I was a little kid and I love it now still.

What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)

Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars the concert to own!.......2007-06-08

This reunion concert with Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park, recorded in 1981, was historically, a very important event for many of their fans fortunate enough to be present for the performance, as well as the rest of us who caught it on PBS, as part of one of their more successful pledge drive efforts. Though, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had split over artistic and [no doubt] personality differences, this concert really was the bridge made over their troubled waters, to reacquaint two old friends together through the music that had brought them so close in the past.

Even twenty-six years later, you can feel the real passion that these two men have for music, and for the best songs from their repertoire. Paul Simon penned many great hits, during his time spent recording with Garfunkel in their musical partnership. They include songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," their interpretation of the traditional folk ballad, "Scarborough Fair," "America," "Mrs. Robinson," "Wake Up Little Susie," and a slew of other tunes. Those two have a haunting quality to their performances that truly sounds like a throwback to the era of minstrels from the middle ages, yet, the arrangements fuse "old" together with "new," sustaining their fanbase that they acquired in the 1960s, as well as newer listeners drawn in by the more modern arrangements. You will truly enjoy this concert, and its a great recording that you could easily watch over again numerous times, without losing interest.

Looked like a great concert, but this duo was sadly let down by the sound men. Their voices were largely drowned out by the music and background noise.

If you love John Denver or have forgotten how much you once loved him, this is the DVD for you. A PBS special that has gone to disc. FABULOUS music, great interviews and show snippets. Really a great remembrance of a great singer, songwriter and performer. He is really missed.

I was happily surprised at the quality of this program. It covered up to the time of his divorce from Annie but not his remarriage, and did a good job of presenting the man behind the star performer.
