More Beverly Hills 90210 than Freaks and Geeks, Sweet Valley High looks at the lives and loves of the popular kids rather than the outcasts. Cynthia and Brittany Daniel star as twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield in the television version of Francine Pascal's best selling book series. With their seemingly perfect Southern California lives, Liz and Jess are more Betty and Veronica, from the Archie comics, than the high school girls of any other TV series. In other words, Sweet Valley Highis escapism, pure and simple--and what's wrong with a little escapism? While both girls are part of the in-crowd, there are differences between them. Liz, a reporter for the school newspaper, is the good one, while Jess, a cheerleader, is the not-so-good one.

Created by Josh Goldstein (American Dreams), The Complete First Season includes all 22 episodes broadcast between 1994-1995. Supporting characters include Liz's boyfriend Todd (Ryan James Bittle) and best friend Enid (Amy Danles) and Jess's best friends Lila (Bridget Flanery) and Patty (Amarilis). Rich kid Bruce (Brock Burnett), his pal Manny (Harley Rodriguez), token nerd Winston "Eggman" Egbert (Michael Perl), and a few teachers--but no parents--round out the cast. Most of the conflicts the girls face are created by devious, self-centered Jess, who pretends to be her sister whenever Liz has something she wants, like a potential college boyfriend ("Dangerous Love"), a broadcasting gig ("Oracle on Air"), or praise from the hot poetry teacher ("Poetic Injustice"). SWEET VALLEY HIGH is a miraculous piece of work! I saw all that I could, when it was on network TV...and loved 99% of it!

PLEASE....CAN WE HAVE THE OTHER SEASONS ON DVD AS WELL? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would buy them immediately? (If they can't be put on DVD...how about audio CDs or cassettes? As you can see, I REALLY, REALLY WANT TO OWN THE E N T I R E SERIES!

The hallmark of this series...what sets it apart from most other teen shows, (or any TV shows, for that matter), is the GREAT WITTY WRITING! I kept a long list of the witty, delightfully non-politcally correct repartee of this show, and still have it. Such phrases as "I don't want to be politically correct -- I want to think for myself!", "Do you have a licence to be rude?", "Why do I need a 'sense of closure'?", "Other people can think the way they want, cause I don't care!", "I am SO over this 'selfless' thing!", "Everything here is just so small, and insignificant, and ugly!", "Too much is never enough!", "I'm worth it...I'm worth it ALL!", "When did you go mortal?", "I am NOT your way-average worker!", "It takes time to look this good!", "It's NOT that I don't have a work ethic...it's that I despise manual labour!" "Do I look as good as I think I do?", "Make sure your dress and hair are right -- that's all anybody cares about." "How is the air up there on Olympus?", and the immortal, "Limos, LIMOS....L I M O S !"....might not be what is taught in Sunday school...but it IS what goes on in the minds of (too?) many teens and pre-teens. It's good to see it come out...for usage in dealing with real-life bullies, ("How is the air up there on Olympus?", "Do you have a licence to be rude?), and also to see how Too Much Egoism can lead to bad consequences...as Jessica Wakefield. the more opportunistic of the two twins in this series, often finds to her chagrin, (and the viewers satisfaction). The kinder Elizabeth Wakefield, (her twin), also seeks fame and fortune...but not quite so much at the expense of others, as her twin would do.

I haven't read any of the "SVH" books, (so far)...so I am still confused as to where the girls' parents are. One never sees them, and they are never mentioned. Are they alive or dead? Are they millionaires who have given their daughters their own home, and gone on with their own lives? One is left in limbo as to this....and it does have a deleterious effect on the believability of the show. If the parents aren't there...please tell us why, and where they are!

I like the idea of the sweet, simple, happy-go-lucky guy friend of the girls...who turns out to come from a very, very wealthy family. It's nice to know that all rich people are not totally stuck up. (Reminds me of the time that Richard Nixon tried to marry off one of his daughters to Prince Charles...but that Prince Charles found Ms. Nixon "too royal" for his taste!
It's not money, but character, that makes anyone the person he or she is....)

Anyway, this is one great series! I'm glad the first season is on DVD! And since I just bought my first DVD player, I'm going to buy it! I suggest that anyone else who is looking for some great dialogue, fine acting, teen-age capers, and wonderful phrases for assertiveness training, and who can afford the price of this priceless set, do so as well!

To repeat: PLEASE MAKE THE OTHER SEASONS OF THIS GREAT SHOW AVAILABLE AS WELL!!!!! : )

ADDENDUM: I have just bought and viewed some of the episodes of the first season, and realize that some of the phrases used, and characters described may not be in the first season...but from
further seasons. The very indelibility of these phrases and characters attests to how wonderful they are. Hopefully, when these other seasons are released, they can be viewed, (in all their glory!), as well!

OK. This series is based on the book, yet the episodes don't really with the book plots. It is worth the purchase, especially if you do not have great Tv channels, like me. The acting is not fab, as some of the actors aren't really hot until season 3 (Todd)lol.

For people who enjoy the books, this is worth the purchase, as there are no more SVH books to read. I own almost all of them!
the DVD set alows you to see a different side to the book, where you can actually view the actions, instead of reading them. The only downside is that it is 20min per episode.

I remember reading reading my frist sweet valley twins and friends book.My school libaryian showed them to me in 3rd grade! ever since then i've been on the edge of my seat in suspense reading every sweet valley book. i remember reading the covers one time...and seeing that IT'S A SERIES!I was so excited. I looked on the last page and found the listings.Unfortunally my home town wasn't on the listings..I was so sad..But i remember catching some episodes out of the blue. One day i was surfing the internet for Sweet valley related thing.And i saw this DVD. I was so excited and itmeditly i asked my mom if she would order it.I waited a little while for it to come. I am proud to say it was worth the wait...Any way i poped it in and was a little disappointed. I thought it would be like the EXCAT book.But then as i saw more i related how they are alike to the books.I couldn't watch them for awhile beacaues of other things.Lately i've been watching a TON. And as i watch i see how they are alike to the books even more.Even though Todd and Bruce look PRETTY weird and the fact that there's no ADULT parents...But ADULT teachers was a tunoff but the greatness of the DVD replaced that minor complaint. I hope This DVD makes a sucess beacause then they'll make the 2nd...3rd...and 4th seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Winning Season is a good movie loosely based on Honus and Me. I wish it had more of the farfetched fantasy that makes Dan Gutman's book appeal to children, however, it was done in very good taste.

An underrated movie.......2007-01-29

Although this film is not as famous as other baseball movies such as Field of Dreams, 61*, Fever Pitch,......etc, it is one of my favorite baseball movies after I watched it.

The main scene is back to the 1909 World Series with two HOFers, Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. You can see something about baseball cards, the notorious Ty Cobb's behaviors and the romance of Honus Wagner.

The story is lovely and charming while the pace is soft and gentle. Although the cast is not so well-known, they got the job done pretty well. Try to grab a DVD and watch it. You will find it worth the time and money.

THIS WAS A PRETTY GOOD FILM. THIS BASEBALL FILM IS BASED ON THE BOOK "HONUS & ME." IF YOU LIKED THE SHORT STORY, YOU WILL LIKE THIS FILM. SET IN 1985. A NINE YEAR OLD BOY STARTS CLEANING AN OLD LADY'S GARAGE AND STUMBLES UPON A 1909 T-206 HONUS WAGNER BASEBALL CARD. IT MAGICALLY SENDS HIM BACK TO 1909 TO MEET THE GREAT PLAYER. HE DOES AND THEN HE HAS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET HOME.
