The exotic sounds, vibrant colors, and ecstatic dancing of Bollywood collide with the cunning storytelling of Jane Austen in Bride & Prejudice (from the writer/director of previous East/West hybrid Bend It Like Beckham). When smart, outspoken Lalita Bakshi (Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai) meets Will Darcy (Martin Henderson, The Ring), she finds this American businessman arrogant and conceited--but because his best friend is falling in love with her sister, Lalita agrees to travel around India with Darcy. On the trip, a childhood friend of Darcy's named Johnny (Daniel Gillies, Spider-Man 2) both tickles Lalita's fancy and confirms her worst suspicions about Darcy. But as events unfold, Lalita wonders if she hasn't misjudged Darcy--and Johnny. Austen fans will be find much to criticize; Bride & Prejudice transplants the basic plot of Pride & Prejudice to modern India, but not much of Austen's sly wit or her insights about character and society have survived the translation. Henderson, though handsome, lacks the intimidating charisma of previous Mr. Darcys (including Laurence Olivier and Colin Firth). Thank goodness for the delightful Rai, here making her first all-English-language movie. She commands the screen like a true star (unsurprisingly, she's hugely popular in India, and previously starred in a more homegrown Austen adaptation: I Have Found It, based on Sense & Sensibility). For Western audiences unfamiliar with the freewheeling exuberance of Indian movies--wild musical numbers can break out at almost any moment--Bride & Prejudice offers an engaging taste of this fantastic cinematic style. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars "Life Is Great, Let's Celebrate!" ~ Bollywood Without Subtitles.......2007-06-30

If you've ever been tempted to rent or purchase an Indian film but declined because of your iniate fear of reading subtitles fear no more. Released in '05 'Bride and Prejudice' is a wonderful revisioning of the classic English love story 'Pride and Prejudice' done in English but in indelliable Bollywood style. Aishwarya Rai is perfect as the intelligent and irrepressiable Lalita and Martin Henderson is likeable and amiable as her rich American suitor who must overcome his American prejudices and the influence of his rich Mother in order to give into his growing feelings of love for the Indian beauty.

Give it a try, it's harmless enough and when you find yourself swept up in the colorful, flowing costumes, the heart pounding music and exotic ambience of the Indian culture you'll know you are ready for the real thing, subtitles and all!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-06-23

This was my first introduction to Aishwarya Rai and Indian films. I know it's not pure Bollywood, but I enjoyed this so much that I had to start watching "the real deal".
The story was engaging, clever, and humorous, and the singing & dancing were a joy to watch. I *love* the dancing especially.
Even my husband is hooked now. I don't know how we missed this when it first came out, but I'm glad that I finally got the chance to see it for myself.

4 out of 5 stars Bollywood at its best---a fun adaptation.......2007-06-21

I love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and the recent movie adaptations of it (Colin Firth '96 and Keira Knightley '06). This movie cleverly weds the wit of Austen with the song and dance of Bollywood. In Bride's family, we get counterparts for elder sister Jane, Mary with her dubiously entertaining "snake dance," and Lydia and her doomed attraction for Wickham; there is no parallel for Elizabeth's sister Kitty. The storyline is pretty comparable and the deleted scenes complete the Lady Catherine/Elizabeth confrontation and Darcy's apology to Bingley.

While the young man who played Darcy was very handsome and came off as quite the gentleman, I thought the actor who played Wickham (Daniel Gillies) took the cake in the hottness factor (at almost 5'10", I tend to be attracted to tall men with nice builds). Normally, I'm not competitive with other women in the looks department, but I admit to having been jealous of Aishwarya Rai's intense, angelic beauty. She has naturally blue-green eyes and auburn-streaked hair, rare coloring for an Indian woman. I always thought that Brooke Shields was arguably the most beautiful woman on the planet (Brooke Shields is still very beautiful, but she looked like an angel when she was in her twenties and thirties), but perhaps Aishwarya is a close second. Of course, I'm violating the Dalai Lama's admonition to be happy for other people's good fortune with this jealousy of Aishwarya's beauty :-)

I loved the singing and dancing scenes; the director said that she tapered Bollywood Eastern music to Western taste. Ashanti makes an appearance, fusing many different musical styles with her performance.

The guy who plays Mr. Kholi (Mr. Collins) was hilarious in his self-indulgent portrayal of a nerdy man who was trying too hard. The mother wasn't quite as obnoxious as Alison Steadman's rendition, but you get the point of a pushy woman with questionable social graces.

One of my favorite things about this movie was the bright colors that pervade every scene. From the clothing, the interiors, to the backdrop of an Indian village, everything is kodachrome.

1 out of 5 stars terrible!!.......2007-06-14

I really love everything about BOLLYWOOD films and adore the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, so I was really looking forward to watching this film. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. It has a lot of music and color, but the acting is so bad, and the abrupt interruptions of song and music so annoying, that they produce an unwelcome mess of a movie. I realize some serious messages were to be transmitted, but it perhaps tried to do too much, and failed at everything miserably. If you want an entertaining movie with a good message, try Lagaan directed by Ashutosh Gowariker or Water and Earth by Deepa Mehta. Don't waste your time with Bride and Prejudice.

5 out of 5 stars Great girls night movie!.......2007-06-08

This would be great for a girls movie night,it's funny, and romantic. I watched it with my friends and we couldn't stop laughing.

An unlikely sisterhood plots a girl-powered revenge in John Tucker Must Die. When the class-overachiever (Arielle Kebbel, Aquamarine), the head cheerleader (Ashanti, Coach Carter), and the vegan alterna-girl (Sophia Bush, One Tree Hill) discover they're all dating the same guy--namely, star basketball player John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe, Desperate Housewives)--they recruit a bashful new girl named Kate (Brittany Snow, The Pacifier) to become the ideal girl to break Tucker's heart. But as Kate uses the gang's combined wiles to lure Tucker, his interest gives her a social standing she's never had before...an intoxicating experience that may cost her a chance at honest love with another boy. John Tucker Must Die contrasts male and female behavior to cunning comic effect. The portrait of high school life is typically absurd, but the engaging cast, sprightly plot, and crisp dialogue will draw you in. It's a testament to the smooth guiding hand of director Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie, Private Parts) that ex-Playmate Jenny McCarthy's performance can genuinely be called understated. One of 2006's best teen comedies. --Bret Fetzer

John Tucker Must Die PG 13

John Tucker ( Jesse Metcalfe) is the amazing high school, superstar. All the guys want to be him and all of the girls want to date him. However, this "great" guy is cheating on three girls. Beth (Sophia Bush) the main flirt, Carrie (Arielle Kebble) the brainy girl, and Heather (Ashanti Douglas) the prep snotty cheerleader. Kate Spencer (Brittany Snow) finds out about John while working as a waitress at the restaurant he always goes to. When Kate meets the three girls, she tells them all about John's scheme. And they are definitely not going to let him off the hook. Its time for some payback to crush him. When John meets Kate, he falls in love with her. But the girls are telling her to stay strong and to never give in. Don't forget, while all of this is happening John is still going out with Beth, Carrie, and Heather. Here it comes, John breaks up with all three of them just for Kate. Now they are kicking it into over drive! But everything they did just seemed to make the girls like him even more. But one event changes everything. Even thought John and Kate have been on one date together, and didn't even say her own words but what the girls wanted her to say John still did it. John gave Kate his watch and asked her to be his girlfriend. But I can't tell you her answer. At Johns Birthday party... Just watch the movie!

I recommend this movie to girls and boys (it may be a chick flick but boys, you can learn a lesson here!) ages 12 and up. But remember this movies rating is PG 13.

This movie is my all time favorite movie ever. I just love it. It kept me laughing all night long. I have been talking about this movie nonstop ever since I have seen it. Which was three months ago. My friends are about to slap me because I wont be quite. In short, watch the movie!!!

3 out of 5 stars passable for what it was.......2007-06-06

John Tucker Must Die was a surprise to me. Why? Because the movie didn't fall for the usual tricks that teenager movies normally do- immature violence, lots of dirty swear words, and sex. All those topics were surprisingly avoided and instead the writers opted to go for a much more acceptable and cleaner storyline. Did it work? Well, sort of.

I have to agree with the reviewer who mentions the similarities to Saved By The Bell. It was pretty much just like that old TV show in every way. As a young adult, I'm happy my teenage years are over and don't want to think about the past and the way I used to be back then, so for people who are also in the same boat, you probably won't find anything about the movie to really win you over. You'll just think "Oh yeah, I used to act like that" and be done with it. In other words, this movie will only be funny to a teenager, and no one else will care.

A decent movie for teenagers, but not the greatest film ever made, that's for sure.

5 out of 5 stars John Tucker Must Die.......2007-05-12

Not only does this movie keep you laughing until your stomach hurts, you can not stop watching it. I have purchased this movie 3 weeks ago, and already watched it over 15 times. This movie is great, and i recommended you/ everyone to purchase and watch it.

4 out of 5 stars Makin' Lemonade out of Lemons.......2007-03-17

I came away from this movie thinking - Wow, I wish I was like John Tucker! I have never seen anyone make lemonade out of lemons like that man. He was good and fine to boot. I thought it was entertaining. It was clearly more of a teenager movie, but I thought it was fun. Definitely worth a check out.

5 out of 5 stars John Tucker Must Die.......2007-03-08

this is a must see movie. me and anyone else that i have asked has felt the same way. it is PG-13, and about 90 minutes long. if you like this movie, i would recommend she's the man, with amanda bynes and channing tatum. john tucker must die is a movie about how 3 girls think they have the best boyfriend, only to find that they are all dating the same guy, john tucker, star of the basketball team. then when an amazing girl comes along, they send her on a mission to break john tucker's heart, and the movie is just the journey and drama along the way. once again, it is a must-see.

Based on a true story of the man who locked his boys out of the gym until they focused on their schoolwork, this by-the-numbers crowd-pleaser holds together because a steely Samuel L. Jackson refuses to notice the parade of clichés he's trumpeting (the dialogue sticks to platitudes like, "Success in here is the key to success out there"). Coach Ken Carter (Jackson) takes over an unruly team of Richmond, California basketball players and teaches them how to play--and behave--like champions. His plight, which pits him against an uncooperative school board and parents who've given up hope, holds some interest, but the film is too concerned with giving us a Big Game every twenty minutes or so. The teens all have the spark of life in them (including pop star Ashanti, who features in a surprisingly well-handled teen pregnancy subplot), though the film's plodding familiarity means it's never really rousing, adding up to simply a good-natured amalgam of Stand and Deliver, Hoosiers, Dangerous Minds, and even Dead Poet's Society (one of the tougher players actually recites some inspirational poetry).--Steve Wiecking

Description

COACH CARTER tells the inspiring true story of controversial high school basketball coach Ken Carter (Jackson). Making headlines for his emphasis on the importance of academics over athletics, Carter requests all the members of the team to sign contracts, promising to maintain a certain grade point average. When the players fail to live up to this agreement, Carter benches the entire team, locking the gym and forfeiting games to prove his point. This infuriates the community who sees this as a hindrance to the future professional athletic careers of the players. Through hard work and dedication, Carter eventually gets his point across to his team and the community, going above and beyond to ensure a solid academic future for his team.

5 out of 5 stars Coach Carter Has Guts!!!.......2007-04-10

A coach who insists that his players strive at success in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. May their tribe increase! Ken Carter accepts the job as coach of the California based Richmond Oilers, an inner city high school team. He makes the students sign contracts where they agree to maintain at least a 2.3 GPA, attend classes, and sit in the front row.

But as good as the team is becoming on the court, they are not all living up to the bargain in the classroom, so Coach Carter cancels team practices and games until the student athletes show improvement in their studies. This gets the coach in a lot of hot water with the community.

This is a hard hitting, gutsy movie that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. The movie starts to become a bit predictable by about the halfway point, but that doesn't man that the film isn't any less satisfying.

This is simply great film to own on dvd! Every high school basketball team should se this movie because it teaches priorities, especially the priority of education above even sports.

4 out of 5 stars very good story.......2007-03-11

At first I thought Coach Carter was going to be another sports movie along the lines of the Mighty Ducks (but in a basketball version) but as the movie goes on, you find out the story it tells is actually pretty deep and has an important message behind it. The movie is not just about playing basketball and winning games, it's about getting yourself a good education before having fun playing sports. It's about realizing that basketball is a game you play for fun, while staying in school and learning is more important and more rewarding in the long run. The ending is the best part. I won't spoil it, though.

Also, there's another message behind it. It's to respect the people who are trying their best to help you. That's what I got out of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sports In The Game Of Life.......2007-02-16

If you heard Samuel L. Jackson discuss Coach Carter on the typical media blitz before the movie's release, you could tell this was a truly special role in his dynamite career. And the message delivered shows how sports - placed in its proper perspective - can boost young men to better understand the game of life.

Ken Carter is a successful sporting goods owner who accepts the head coaching position at Richmond (Ca.) High School, where he had been a top athlete back in the day. But the game isn't all that Carter is coaching; he institutes written contracts for each player that includes behavior, dress code and grade stipulations.

In 1999, Carter gained national attention when he benched his undefeated team due to poor academic achievement by 15 of the 45 players. Not only was the gym closed, there was a ban on all basketball-related activities and he was prepared to cancel the rest of the season, even with a bitter backlash from school officials, fans, players & their family members.

Jackson does an outstanding job in portraying a coach who understood that a game can teach crucial lessons in life. Rick Gonzalez (Timo Cruz), Nana Gbewonyo (Junior Battle) and Ashanti (Kyra) also do great jobs, though the entire cast really clicked with the script.

Coach Carter is not just a sports movie and its theme is very important for adults as much as it is for the athletes.

5 out of 5 stars extremely good movie.......2007-02-06

I loved this movie! the best part was when the titans scored the touchdown to win with 2 seconds left!! and i LOVE dinzel washington, he's my favorite actor. by far the best football movie out there. My only complaint is that i think companies should make a movie about basketball for once. that would be cool.

There were good intentions in this Muppets adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic Emerald City story of Dorothy's journey to see the Wizard with hopes of fulfilling her dream of stardom: the film is a nostalgic nod to the original 1979 Muppet Movie, where Kermit leaves the swamps for Hollywood to become a star, picking up some friends along the way. Grammy winner Ashanti plays Dorothy Gale, an aspiring singer who serves meatloaf to truckers and lives in a Kansas trailer park with her Aunt Em (Queen Latifah). In the ensuing chaos of a giant tornado, she gets dumped in the Land of Oz—along with her pet shrimp, Toto (Pepe the Prawn). Dorothy soon meets the familiar Scarecrow, Tin man, and Lion (Kermit, Gonzo, and Fozzie, respectively) and together they journey to see the Wizard (voiced by Jeffrey Tambor) who promises to grant her celebrity wish if first she defeats the Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Piggy). While the Muppets have survived a few cinematic flops before, this film is bereft of all they represent--the endearing innocence, engaging silliness, and cagey humor of Jim Henson's legendary variety series. Instead, a mean-spirited cynicism with sexual subtext prevails that is not only unfunny, but also mildly offensive. In a desire to appear edgy and culturally relevant by the filmmakers (and executive producers Brian and Lisa Henson), the timeless spirit of the vintage Muppets is missing, as are the signature voiceovers by Frank Oz and Brian Henson. Onscreen chemistry between actors and Muppets feels contrived, not to mention Quentin Tarantino's bizarre cameo. When Kermit delivers a religious joke of questionable taste, viewers might yearn for the swamp years, when Kermit the frog and the Henson Company could do no wrong. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars What I think of the Muppets' Wizard of Oz.......2007-07-04

The Muppets' Wizard of Oz was very cute and funny. The Muppets can turn anything into something very funny and entertaining. Like the Muppet Treasure Island, they can turn a classic into a very funny movie. With all the movies that the Muppets are in I would very highly recommend it to all families with children.

1 out of 5 stars Muppets a Huge Disappointment.......2007-04-17

The Muppet Wizard of Oz was a film that didn't have any magic to it whatsoever. It is highly inappropriate to have sexual references, even in regards to Gonzo's nipples, it is not appropriate for little kids to listen to this sort of garbage. What the hell is up with Brian Henson? Apparently Disney is just trying to follow with everyone else in this sex crazed world. There is no more creativity left and that is just wrong.

In response to someone who left a comment saying that in the old variety shows of the 60's and 70's was there any references to nipples back then? I think not, and references of any kind back then was so hard for a little kid to figure out on their own, they were very much more hidden and more dryer. Nowadays it is just like sexual references are the only thing that is funny out there and it is just sick.

1 out of 5 stars GARBAGE, complete garbage........2007-04-10

Boy was I disappointed. And I knew it was going to be bad, but not this bad. I even waited years to buy a copy. What a waste of money! We couldn't even watch the whole thing, and I'm a huge Muppet fan. The whole hip hop Ashanti thing killed the beginning and not even Kermit could pick up the pieces when he finally appeared on screen. Save your money and stay away from this bomb.

2 out of 5 stars Disney finally gets it's hands on OZ and this is what they come up with?!?!.......2007-01-27

Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe my reaction to the film. It all starts with the writing, obviously this was written by someone who knows little about the Muppets and their humor. There is absolutely no charm or class in this entire film. Ashanti is passible at best, the muppets have no real personality, the effects are an atrocious mix of bad lighting and "Sesame Street" like sets. It also would have been nice to have the music composed by someone who knew what they were doing. If you're going to make a musical, get someone who can do some catchy tunes. Bottom line, if you're an Oz fan or a Muppets fan...give it a once over, but no promises. Chances are, you won't be too happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence in Family Entertainment.......2007-01-10

This movie is perfect for the whole family. It's a complete movie for once. It has Ashant(II) who is very talented and brings a year 2000 twist on Dorothy and with her aunt and uncle, who would had ever thought but it works well. And one of the most impressive charaters TOTO the Shrimp (Prawn)was absolutely hilarious. I watched the movie with my Son (17) and Daughter (14) and we laughed so hard. I buy 4 family gifts every year for Christmas and with out a doubt this was the BEST!!!!!

Description

Dr. David Linderby and his wife Anansa are carrying out an inoculation program in a small African village when Anansa disappears. The police can do nothing to find her and David has almost given up hope when he hears a rumour that Anansa has been kidnapped by a slave trader called Suleman, to be sold to an Arab prince.

The authorities deny that the slave even exists, so David must find unofficial organizations to help him; a shadowy world where the rescuers of the slave are just as futhless as the traders themselves. Enlisting the help of Malik, a nomad whose family were stolen by Sulelman, David must leave civilization behind and travel across the desert to find Anansa.

4 out of 5 stars Love Conquers All? ~ Sometimes.......2005-11-25

My rule of thumb concerning presentation format. If you have a choice between widescreen and full screen, always purchase the widescreen. However, if the film is only available in full screen and it's one you really want, you buy the full screen and put up with it until a widescreen version comes out to replace it. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. With that said I'll comment on the movie.

Being the movie buff that I am, I'm embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of 'Ashanti' until I puchased it recently. The selling factor for me was the inclusion of Beverly Johnson in the cast. Upon my initial viewing I was delightfully surprised to discover that this is actually an extremely good and timely film. The existence of a modern day slave traders and the ever rising numbers of unaccounted for missing persons has received alot of media coverage in the U.S.A. this past year. It's a harsh reality, but it's the truth nonetheless, slavery continues to flourish in the twenty-first century. Odd how this '79 film could so accutely tap into our awakening consciousness of this worldwide scandal so relevant today.

'Ashanti' is a well conceived, highly entertaining action/adventure and love story of one man's relentless search for this kidnapped Ashanti wife. He pursues the slave trader Suleiman across the slavery routes of Africa and Arabia with the aid of the enigmatic, nomadic warrior Malik who lost his family years earlier to the same slave trader.

The cinematograpy is gorgeous which makes it a real shame that this DVD is full screen (sorry had to make another comment on format). The screenplay is brutally honest, at times sadly poignant and will keep you engaged until the very end. 'Ashanti' also boasts a cast of international stars that deliver admirable if not outstanding performances. My personal favorites were; Kabir Bedi in the role of Malik and of course the devastatingly beautiful and exotic Beverly Johnson as the kidnapped Anansa.

Negatives: One of the worst muscial soundtracks I've ever heard. It sounds like something that belongs in a very bad '70's television series. Also disappointing was the ending. Up until the last ten minutes I would have given this film -5 Stars-. What were they thinking?

1 out of 5 stars It's beyond me..........2005-09-21

... how anyone could see a botched fool-screen edition as "A Great DVD". As long as anyone is buying those insults to 'Artistic property' (which are much more perverted than any pirating), no wonder some studios keep on releasing such ludicrous editions. Any movie should be seen (and heard) in the original format (and language) : subtitles are ALWAYS better than dubbing (once upon a time, movies were even shot in 2 or more languages, best example is Laurel & Hardy who were even funnier in French or Spanish -because of their accent- than in English).

Of course, rating only apply to the studio, whose name should be read "Tangled Entertainment". When will so-called "Enforcement Agencies" look at this as a crookery worse than piracy : a 2.35:1 movie is missing almost half the image when butchered in 1:33. Full-screen as an option for those whose vision has been irremediably impaired by TV watching could be understandable if original format was included as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie! Great DVD!.......2005-09-18

Like Michael Caine? If so this is a must have. I'd never heard of this movie now I recommend it to everyone. As time goes by we let some good stuff slip threw the cracks. Talk about an allstar cast...Peter Ustinov, Omar Sharif, William Holden and a VERY BEAUTIFUL BEVERLY JOHNSON. You have Vodoo, a very interesting story and great acting, what more do you want. Try getting that at your local movie theatre. I thought the DVD looked great motion menus, biographies and all.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars for the PAL, Full Screen DVD Version of the movie..........2005-09-07

I just bought the UK version of the DVD, which I really hope, won't be duplicated in the NTSC version.

Not so much for the quality of the picture (which is discreet, even if in a banal Full-Screen presentation) or the sound (plain and dull 2.0 Stereo), but because I am tired, REALLY TIRED, to see movie transferred on DVD in a Full Screen format.

To me, allow me to say this, DVD is meant for the entire piocture resolution and format.

If you, the production companies and distributors, are not able to come up with something better than the same version already on VHS tapes, than just forget it and don't produce this stuff anymore.

It's a waste of time and money. Your time and your money at that, but also ours. And Heaven knows if the economy is at a point where someone has still the right to squander money.

To produce a DVD, one needs serious research of the sources, lots of patience cleaning a movie up, for a better picture and sound resolution, and the money to do so.

Just slamming a video copy on a DVD doesn't do it for the real collector or the true movie connaisseur.

You all do (you producers and you distributors), all so often, treat us (the customers and viewers) as if we were plain imbeciles, cretins or complete idiots, which in some cases maybe true.

But to assume that because out there, there are a few suckers, willing to throw their money at you without any question asked, all the rest of the viewers, which are actually the majority (but you don't even bother to notice), would do the same, is plainly offensive.

I actually know why "Ashanti" is redestributed in this format on DVD (at least the UK copy).
Already in 1979, the year in which it was produced, the producer had to struggle for distribution.
It represented a competition to Hollywood, by an independent and until then, unkown producer.

Although this may not be considered a masterpiece of a movie, it is still a good and entertaining one, tackling with a subject that many have tried to avoid for years: Modern Slavery.

I may not be surprised to know hat behind all the reticence to distribute the movie, was a wealthy Arab, feeling offended by the thematic contained in it. We all know they have the means to do something like this.

They have done so for years and we have allowed them to do so because of the money. These gentlemen are very clever. They don't need to wage war against us. They just need to blackmail us with oil embargos, or withdraw their dominant capitals from our banks, and we are on our knees.
Knowing that, they have played around with us, and our weak Governments, for decades.

Unfortunately for these Gentlemen, not all of us, are suckers or wide-eyed believers of good will, and some even manage to read between the lines and discover the things they don't want us to see, or to know.

Culture, is a true damnation, to such individuals, who try to play on the "clever" note. Being clever, doesn't necessarily mean that one is also very intelligent.

Actually this is exactly the assumption of many "clever men", who always try to outsmart the truly intelligent one with their gimmicks and their stupid tricks.

It is very unfortunate that such individuals truly think that in the long run, they will rule the world and the market, since experience and hundreds of years of history have only proven the exact contrary.

In their immense ignorance, all they manage to produce, is the perpetuation of their mistakes, and in their arrogance (which is the true trait of the ignorant) they don't see that they are only achieving very little for a very limited amount of time.

Here I come back to this little effort of distributing "Ashanti" on DVD.
Quite frankly I hope, that the U.S. version will be in its original 1.35:1 format and digitally remastered for a surround sound (even just a conventional one).

My three stars are just limited to the work contained in the movie and the cast who played in it.

The British DVD version is just another blunt excuse to rip our hard earned money out of our pockets.

Stay away from it and wait for the U.S. release.
But before you buy it, read whether or not it is in Widescreen or not. if it is not, don't even bother.
The scope of this movie and the scenery itself require both that this picture be viewed in a theatrical format.

Be aware of what you buy and what you get.

It is your money, not theirs.

Coach Carter PSP UMD Movie MODEL- UM031764 VENDOR- UMD FEATURES- Coach Carter PSP Movie The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there is more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him -- the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond cagers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more -- to teach the boys to respect themselves and one another, and that they must excel in the classroom as well as in the gymnasium. Under Carters guidance, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title a genuine possibility. However, when Carter learns that a number of his players have let their grade point averages slip below 2.3, as mandated in a contract he entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team out of the gym and send them into study hall until their marks improve. Carters plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of whom are not sympathetic to Carters belief that his players must have goals beyond college ball or the NBA. Coach Carter also features Rob Brown

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL SPORT MOVIE..........2006-06-22

When my daughter came over to visit, she suggested that we rent this film. Since it stars Samuel L. Jackson and is about a high school basketball coach, I thought that it sounded promising. Well, it turned to be more than just promising. It is a movie that held me riveted to the screen the entire time it was on. Samuel L. Jackson is simply outstanding in the role of a high school coach who sees basketball as the means to an end and not the end itself.

Based upon a true story that took place in Richmond, California, it centers on a man named Ken Carter. He was asked by the retiring basketball coach of Richmond High School to return as a part-time basketball coach to the school from which Ken had graduated and left his mark many years earlier. The school is one of those schools in which people barely graduate and, of those that do, most do not go on to college. The basketball team was no great shakes either, having won only four games in the entire previous year.

Finally, Carter is prevailed upon to take over as coach. He has, however, decided that he wants to make a difference. He starts off by letting the team know who is boss and by trying to instill discipline and respect. He wants to go back to fundamentals. He wants to put the emphasis on being a student athlete. To this end, he makes it clear just what his expectations are. He drafts a contract that those who wish to remain on the team, as well as their parent, must sign. Some of the conditions are that the players must attend class, do their schoolwork, and pass their classes. Those who signed the contract ended up making the best move of their lives.

Coach Carter keeps his side of the bargain, turning the team into a formidable one on the court. Suddenly, basketball at Richmond High School begins commanding attention. Notwithstanding this, he still emphasizes that they are to be just as committed to their studies. While one might expect some resistance from the student athletes to such a change, one would expect support from the educators themselves. What is amazing is the resistance that he experiences from the teaching community who are reluctant to give him progress reports on how his players were doing academically.

When Coach Carter finally gets his long awaited progress reports and discovers that some of his student athletes are not holding up their end of the contract, all hell breaks loose. Even though they have had an undefeated season so far, he basically locks the gym and tells his players that there will be no more basketball, until he sees some academic improvement. To his surprise, the school board, as well as the parents, does not support him in this matter, and the situation becomes a media sensation on the West Coast. Support comes from an unexpected source, the student athletes themselves.

This is a heartwarming story about a coach who cared and dared to make a difference in the lives of kids that had little or no future. What he did for those students was incomparable, as he basically gave them a chance for a better life. Samuel L. Jackson is sensational as Coach Carter, dynamic and totally believable in the role. The young men who play his student athletes likewise give excellent performances. Ashanti also gives a surprisingly well nuanced performance as the girlfriend of one of the student athletes. Moreover, for those who enjoy great basketball, the on court scenes are extremely well done.

At the end of the film, there is a summary of what happened to these young men. When the viewer sees what happened to them, the viewer cannot help be but touched by the turn of events. This is a very well acted, deftly directed, inspirational film and one that is worthy of being in one's personal collection.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars okay movie, but not one of Michael Dudikoff's better movies........1999-04-26

Michael Dudikoff's acting was alot less 'stiff' than his earlier movies; showed more humor, but the character "BB" could have been played by someone better.
