Something is awry at Boston General Hospital. Dr. Wheeler's (Genevieve Bujold) friend Nancy goes in for a routine procedure, but never comes out of the anesthesia and slips into a coma. Wheeler learns that a tissue sample from the young woman went to the lab, then soon finds out that a high number of patients have become comatose recently. She digs a little deeper and finds a conspiracy mired in hospital politics, running afoul of the head of anesthesia, Dr. George (Rip Torn) and the head of surgery, Dr. Harris (Richard Widmark). Nobody believes the young MD, not even her boyfriend Dr. Bellows (Michael Douglas), but she soon uncovers a black-market trade in body parts, conducted offsite at the Jefferson Institute, a state-of-the-art coma-care facility. As a thriller, Coma certainly has its moments (the scene where a hit man is buried under a pile of frozen-stiff cadavers is an inspired touch), but it's not without its problems. Director Michael Crichton is an MD himself, and the film has a seamless, almost mechanical structure and plotline (taken from the Robin Cook novel). However, the movie's cold, detached feel works against it at times, making the suspense scenes oddly more effective but rendering the emotional content of the characters rather flat. Douglas in particular seems to not put much into his performance; Bujold, on the other hand, is strong and resourceful as the movie's protagonist. More telling, perhaps, is the way that the story shows its age in a time when medical ethics have changed and the phrase "organ harvesting" has made its way into our lexicon. --Jerry Renshaw
Description
Before he created "ER" Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Twister) adapted and directed (his debut behind the camera) this chiller from Robin Cook's best-seller about a sinister medical conspiracy. Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas and Richard Widmark star as doctors caught in its web.

If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasizes her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

Description

You'll fall in love with WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, the hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock (SPEED, A TIME TO KILL). As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher -- MALICE). But when she saves his life after he's been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother (Bill Pullman -- INDEPENDENCE DAY) the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!

5 out of 5 stars Sandra and Bill..........2007-06-16

...what a great pair and what a fabulous movie. This is one of my faves of all time. It's funny, fun, and touches your heart. I am a huge Sandra Bullock fan since first seeing her in Speed and this made me a Bill Pullman fan as well. Previous to this movie he was always the guy who lost the girl, so seeing him as the male lead was a pleasant surprise.
Great movie...get it!!

5 out of 5 stars sweet romantic comedy.......2007-05-25

This is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. Sandra Bullock is perfect in her role, and she has great chemistry with Bill Pullman. All the supporting cast is fabulous, from Peter Gallagher (perfect in his role as the superficial one of the two brothers) to the late always-hilarious Peter Boyle and reliable Jack Warden. Strong casting, an original storyline, great script, and perfect execution make for a highly enjoyable romantic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy, Love Story and overall Family Fun........2007-05-13

This movie shows that you are NOT crazy & you are not alone. Everyone has felt as if they don't fit in and "is it always going to be like this?" This film has several Titles. CLassic Family Fun & Comedy for anytime.

4 out of 5 stars Light and fun.......2007-03-10

This is one of my "watch again and again" movies. It always lifts my mood.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Romantic Comedy.......2007-03-08

I really liked the movie--in fact--I liked it so much that I saw it numerous times. It is one of those treasures that you want to keep in your collection to watch whenever you want. I liked the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in the movie. This movie is one of my favorites to see her in. It was funny and light. "While You Were Sleeping" was really enjoyable. It was not just Sandra who made this movie good and funny, it was the hillarious cast that kicked that humor up a bit more.

The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Teen-hearthrob Renfro is a natural, playing a kid whose life is in jeopardy after he witnesses the death of a Mob lawyer. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson

Description

Settle in. Take a deep breath. Hold tight. The best screen version yet of a novel by John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) delivers all-out, moment-by-moment suspense! Headliners Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones join newcomer Brad Renfro in The Client, a whirlwind thriller that "starts like a house afire and keeps on blazing" (Chicago Tribune). Renfro plays Mark Sway, an 11-year-old torn between what he knows and what he can never tell. A hitman will snuff him in half a heartbeat if Mark reveals what he learned about a Mob murder. An ambitious federal prosecutor (Jones) will keep the pressure on until Mark tells all. Suddenly, Mark isn't a boy playing air guitar anymore. He's a pawn in a deadly game. And his only ally is a courageous but unseasoned attorney (Sarandon) who risks her career for him...but never imagines she'll also risk her life.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I have ever seen!.......2007-07-05

This DVD arrived in excellent shape and in a timely manner. I can honestly say that it has to rate as one of the best movies I've ever seen. I don't think I got up once during the whole movie - it was like holding you on pins and needles.

2 out of 5 stars Not wonderful.......2007-06-14

The Client was a disappointment.

I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Client.......2007-01-29

Sarandon is always good but if you like Tommy Lee Jones you will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, however, we have the positives and the negatives........2006-10-07

Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.

Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.

Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.

Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.

Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.

3 out of 5 stars mostly good, some flubs.......2006-06-02

The movie started out nice and exciting, then, unfortunately, every few scenes would have a slip in reality that makes you say "oops".
Here are just a few:
1. Boy does not actually see a man die, but is traumatized nevertheless (for the balance of the movie).
2. Person shoots a lock open with gun (just like in the movies), though it never happens in real life.
3. In a closed dark boathouse, there are the convenient reflections of light on the water to illuminate everything we need to see.
4. At least one, if not two, people should have fired or not fired their gun (I don't want to spoil it). Instead, we get the usual Hollywood "talk-down"... (oops, I spoiled it).
5. In one scene, the police supposedly have cordoned off a parking lot to try to locate someone, yet there are many pedestrians, and in fact it is the important escape scene in a car that just drives through among the cop cars.

Apart from those and other similar gaffes, it was a well-made movie with a long list of notable actors. I enjoyed some supporting characters (Anthony LaPaglia, JT Walsh) more than the top 3 leads, however.

The DVD has some skimpy text-based extras about cast/crew, a few boring paragraphs of "behind the scenes", a bit of text about casting Brad Refro, and some "reel recommendations" that show the cover of some related DVDs.

If you are not picky about "reality points" you can easily add another star.

Bad romantic comedies make you scoff at their absurdity; good ones make you wish your life was that absurd. Just Like Heaven is just smart and likable enough to trigger that wishing. David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco--only to discover it's haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election). There's something not quite right about Elizabeth's afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life...but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn't rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey. --Bret Fetzer

Contemporary comedies rarely stretch themselves beyond a bickering romantic couple or a bickering couple and a bucket of bodily fluids, which makes the ambition and intelligence of Good bye, Lenin! not simply entertaining but downright refreshing. The movie starts in East Germany before the fall of communism; our hero, Alex (Daniel Bruhl), describes how his mother (Katrin Sass), a true believer in the communist cause, has a heart attack when she sees him being clubbed by police at a protest. She falls into a coma for eight months--during which the Berlin Wall comes down. When she awakens, her fragile health must avoid any shocks, so Alex creates an illusive reality around his bedridden mother to convince her that communism is still alive. Good bye, Lenin! delicately balances wry satire with its rich investment in the lives of Alex, his mother, and other characters around them. Funny, moving, and highly recommended. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end.......2007-06-19

Before the Berlin Wall fell, East Germany is ruled by Communist Russia and its citizens were forced to live a lie- a society that is supposed to be based on equality and social justice. Alex Kernel (played by the amazing Daniel Brühl) is a young disillusioned young man who, together with his fellow East Germans, are on the verge of a revolution and social change.

While walking together with fellow rallyist, Alex was arrested and his mother, who witnessed the scene, suffered a heart attack. While his mother survived, it left her in a coma and for 8 months, Alex and his older sister Ariane took care of her. As East Germany became no more and the reunification of his homeland was completed, his mother woke up. What follows is a hilarious, amusing and at times serious and thought-provoking attempt to shield his mother from the sweeping changes and their altered life as citizens of the newly unified Germany.

Director Wolfgang Becker spared no expense to capture a time and place that now exist only in old, yellowed newspapers and history books. The finished product, a film that is not only a realistic social commentary but also a love story between a son and a mother, and the journey a young restless soul need to travel to discover himself.

4 out of 5 stars Good Bye, Lenin!.......2007-05-29

Funny and heart-warming story about a family during the time of the collapse of the Berlin wall. For the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars High Grade Art. .......2007-05-21

I first heard about this movie a week ago after reading an article in which a commentator described it as being a bit of "communist chic." This intrigued me so I had to check it out. Well, I'm happy to report that the fellow's opinion was nonsense. It's no more accurate a perception than one that misconstrued The Beatles "Back in the USSR" as an ode to the Soviet Union. This is not a propagandistic story in the least. It's a beautiful film about love, family, and truth. Basically, the central question concerns whether or not we should lie to loved ones if we think the lie will ultimately benefit them. The answer is not easy for the main characters or the audience. Goodbye, Lenin! provides us with ambiguity after ambiguity and is rife with the same nuance that fills our own lives. I saw nothing offensive about this film; indeed, it is a valuable work of art.

5 out of 5 stars A world of change.......2007-05-17

This movie represents in a very interesting way the changes that drive our world and our families. The molding of reality to fit certain likings is a very appropiate evocation of history. A very funny and tragic movie!

4 out of 5 stars Neat Movie.......2007-05-12

This movie gave a lot of insight to the way that the East Germans were feeling that crazy time before the wall came down. For a few different generations.

A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend, Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat's single mom, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis). There's a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and just the right balance of fantasy and drama. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Forever Confused.......2007-06-05

Unless this turns out to have been a made for TV movie, I will wait until
it comes out in widescreen format before I buy it. I project my movies on
a 10 foot wide screen and I like to see the WHOLE picture in its original
format thank you very much. ( 4 stars for the movie, not the format ).

4 out of 5 stars Forever Young.......2007-03-11

Wonderful movie for young and old alike. Just enough flying to satisfy the airplane "nut" in your family, and a great love story to keep the ladies interested. You might want to keep the box of tissues handy just in case...!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it is on widescreen.......2006-09-01

The widescreen version of Forever Young was released on LASER DISC. And it is awesome! I have it in my collection. Someone in their infinite wisdom probably decided it wasn't worth it to put that version on DVD. They were so wrong.

5 out of 5 stars love this movie!.......2006-02-23

I love this movie! The classic romance, the modern-day dilemmas, great quotes like "It's the dead guy!!" And, of course, all the flying scenes! Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Elijah Wood are favorites of our family and did not disappoint in this wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film.......2006-01-12

C'mon! Admit it! You love sappy love stories. Especially with a sci-fi twist. Yes, this is cute and harmless, and a real tear jerker. But you know you are gonna love it even more when you see it done by Mel Gibson. Jamie Lee Curtis and Elija Wood also do a great job. The main thing here is that the characters make the story believeable and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars a great medical drama.......2007-03-17

Although this film is almost 30 years old, it is still a hot topic today. If you enjoy medical dramas with sociatal meaning, you'll enjoy this film. The ending will leave you chearing (and thinking)!

4 out of 5 stars Suspended In Suspense.......2006-07-26

It was good to see some familiar actors and actress give us excellent performances in what is normally called a horror movie or thriller. The twist at the end will cause most people to remember the movie for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars If the Caregivers do Harm?.......2006-03-28

The beginning show a hospital operating room. The patient is a good friend of Dr. Susan Wheeler, and undergoes a routine operation. There is a momentary problem. When the operation is over her pupils are fixed and dilated; she is brain dead, and transferred to the ICU. An anesthetic reaction? Why was this patient tissue-typed? The central computer ordered a random test. Dr. Susan visits the computer room to investigate all occurrences of coma in the past year. Some of the deaths were unexpected: patients were young and healthy. But Dr. Susan has violated protocol. This invasion of privacy is smoothed over. Next, there is another unexpected case of coma. The hospital doesn't like Dr. Susan's interest in this. Coma patients are usually transferred to the Jefferson Institute.

Dr. Susan learns how a patient can be killed in an OR: administering CO instead of O2. There are traces which might be overlooked in an autopsy. But Dr. Susan's car won't start, and a stranger seems to be following her. She and Dr. Mark take a weekend vacation. On the way back they visit the Jefferson Institute to look around. Upon her return to the hospital, a janitor tries to tell Dr. Susan something. But the janitor is electrocuted by a killer who makes it look like an accident! Later Dr. Susan finds a tank with a hose leading somewhere. There is a remotely controlled device that connects to OR8, where the coma cases originate. But now the stranger stalks Dr. Susan in the lonely halls of the hospital. There is an exciting chase that ends in the morgue. [The idea of a person discovering a hidden crime then being pursued is common to many adventure films.]

Dr. Susan takes the tour of the Jefferson Institute, and stays behind to explore. She hears that the body parts from the coma victims are harvested and sold to the highest bidder from around the world! Dr. Susan is discovered, but outwits and escapes her pursuers. But she gets a surprise when she reports to the Hospital Administrator! Something happens, and Dr. Susan is scheduled for OR8. Dr. Mark finds and disables the device, saving Dr. Susan's life. This happy ending leaves the consequences implied.

This film has held up well over the decades. Details of hospital care have changed since that time, there is more fear of incurable diseases. The recent scandal in harvesting body parts has made this "science fiction" a case "ripped from the headlines". Science marches on, however implausible it appeared three decades ago. Some of the minor characters have become more famous in films.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless classic.......2005-09-02

A great movie from start to finish. Young Genevieve Bujold and Michael Douglas give outstanding performances. Everyone in the movie is great. An excellent "conspiracy theory" come true movie. A good add for your DVD library.

4 out of 5 stars Scary stuff from the 70's.......2005-06-30

This is a good flick that hasn't lost it's appeal. Michael Crichton's direction is good, I thought, not heavy at least by our standards now. Someone is killing patients at famed Boston Memorial Hospital and getting away with it until Genvieve Bujold loses a friend. She suspects murder but she doesn't know how or why.

Rip Torn is the anesthesiologist and the head of the department and mounts a formidable, sexist and spooky opposition. Richard Widmark plays the head of the hospital. I always liked Widmark, kind of a maverick, always accountable for a solid effort.

The closing scenes in the "Jefferson" site, you'll know what I mean when you see it, are so startling as to make you gulp. Bujold's escape scenes at the end are classic.

We are introduced to Bujold when she's taking a shower and all I could think of was 'thank God we didn't have to sit through her boyfriend Michael Douglas taking a shower.' Didn't we see enough of him . . . no too much of him in "Basic Instinct" a few years later? There's a nice cameo by Ed Harris, very early in his career, who looks so young you think he's 14.

Good movie. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury

He is also dealing with his wife, who has just informed him that she is pregnant - but the child is not his. After a gunfight, Lowe comes very close to death and falls into a coma. While on the road to recovery, Lowe finds himself in a very personal battle to make amends with his kidnapped wife and to avenge his assailant once and for all.

4 out of 5 stars Van Dammaged Goods.......2007-06-22

Unlike his DTV counterpart Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme continues his perchant for producing quality and challenging movies on a smaller budget. Obviously not content with simply cranking out one mindless actioner after another to clutter our shelves, Van Damme once again trys something a little different within his chosen genre - and as a big fan of the belgian bruiser, its great to see him once again not only flexing his pecs, but also his acting muscles.

Directed by Simon Fellows (who shot the Wesley Snipes actioner "7 Seconds" and the disappointing JC vehicle "Second in Command"), "Until Death" is a dark and nightmarish thriller which follows detective Anthony Stowe (Van Damme) who is universally despised by both his work collegues and to a lesser extent, his wife. Addicted to heroin and spiralling into his own personal hell, Stowe has just come off a drug bust that has gone horribly wrong resulting in the death of two of his comrades and now finds himself in a coma when gunned down by arch nemesis Gabriel Callaghan (played in somewhat hammy fashion by the usually reliable Steven Rea). What follows is a tale of redemption as JC comes back from the brink of death, and given a second chance, attempts to make everything right with his life - including his job and his recently pregnant wife who has been kidnapped by Callaghan in an attempt to draw out Stowe. There is more to the story, but that is the basic premise in a nutshell - but, what pulls it out of the usual direct to video dreck is the assured central performance from Van Damme.

Taking a cue from his last Ringo Lam collaboration, the excellent "In Hell", Van Damme once again attempts a complex and non-too likeable character who finds redemption through the combination of violence, honour and love. To see JC perform these kind of roles is wholly satisfying - he is proving on a smaller scale that he isn't just the guy who does the splits and another low rent video Seagal clone, he's a strong movie star who can offer a range of emotions and ultimately create a fully rounder character for an audience to connect with and follow through the movie.

The rest of the cast are hit and miss. Stephen Rea is miscast in a larger than life bad guy role, and he seems to be just reading his lines and hitting his cues. JC's wife Valerie (Selina Giles) isn't that stong either and someone deeper is needed to pull the role off. Gary Beadle as JC's boss and Rachel Grant as a cop are both good in their limited screentime - however, this movie is really Van Dammes' show all the way. It was weird watching it, because the first 45 minutes of the movie, JC is quite despicable and you finding yourself not really liking him - and its not until the last half hour do we see the Van Damme that we know from movies of old. Its a testament to his talent, that he can produce a fully rounded dislikable character at this time of his career - I just hope that their are a number of bigger budgeted producers out there watching what he is doing on the small screen, because I would rather see him in a medium budgeted actioner than the new wave of dull TV extra lite "stars" that we are getting today. Its quite a shame that this went direct to video, because it is far more involving than most movies I have to sit through in theatres. With a slightly higher budget and a stronger supporting cast, Until Death could have been a contnder. JC really has paid his dues now. Its time he came back in a bigger movie.

Sony's disc is the usual movie only affair. A few extras and a decent transfer of the flick. Nothing more. All in all, if you are a Van Damme fan then this movie is a given and one of his best movies in a long time. If you aren't a fan, then this still ranks as a high end DVD release, and well worth a peak.

5 out of 5 stars JEAN CLAUDE'S BEST ROLE EVER.......2007-06-19

12 or so years ago,This would have been a big blockbuster movie in theaters for Vandamme.
Truly one of the best movies I've ever seen.....

5 out of 5 stars Van Damme Is Back !.......2007-06-05

Let me just say one thing about this movie and JCVD's career...U-turn. I am one of Van Damme's biggest fans & I love all of his movies but some just outshine others and this is one. This film brings it all to the table I mean it's more of a deep emotional film that shows how good of an actor Van Damme really is. I can remember when I was just a kid watching Bloodsport & Kickboxer over & over again for hours & watching JCVD films all of my life but in recent years he has disappeared from theaters and now from store shelves but I beleive movies like this one & In Hell could redeem his career & maybe bring him back to theaters or at least the stores. Anyway this movie is a must see for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Van Damme gives another excellent character driven performance.......2007-05-31

Until Death is nothing we haven't seen before. Some characters are badly under written. Supporting actors vary in believability as performers. Stephen Rea is given very little to do except put on a rather fake sounding American accent and spit out his lines and the final shootout is nothing special from director Simon Fellows and there is very little martial arts. The movie is also handicapped with a low budget. Having said all this, Van Damme gives the best performance so far of his career and shows even more range as an actor since his excellent performances in, In Hell and Wake Of Death. I've followed all of Van Damme's movies since Black Eagle and allot of his DTV output has been rather poor of late such as Derailed, Second In Command and The Hard Corps. In this one Van Damme carries the whole movie on his shoulders solely on his performance as an actor and not an action star and pulls it off very well. Van Damme is believable and I wanted to know what was going to happen to his character from start to finish. This is not an action movie but a low level thriller with a central character driven performance by Van Damme. It's a shame that Van Damme is still stuck in low budget DTV land after his performances in Replicant, In Hell, Wake Of Death and now Until Death but perhaps there is hope that he will someday find himself involved in an A-List American production once again. For action fans, you might want to look else where. For some Van Damme fans, you may be disappointed by the lack of martial arts but for others interested in watching a good time passer bearing in mind it's a DTV, this comes recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Van Damme is back.......2007-05-05

OK not much martial arts in this but a good movie for all action fans whteher they are Van damme fans or not.

The Dead Zone is based on a novel by Stephen King, directed by David Cronenberg (Scanners, The Fly) and produced by Debra Hill (Halloween, The Fog). Such a trio of horror vets would be expected to come up with an evening of shocks and gore, but The Dead Zone is a surprise. While it has great atmospheric eeriness and undeniably scary moments, The Dead Zone is at heart a sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of main character Johnny Smith's dilemma. Christopher Walken, king of the vaguely creepy, plays Smith, a man who awakens from a five-year coma with the very mixed blessing of second sight. At the mere touch of a hand, Smith is unwillingly launched into scenes of past and future terror. (Director Cronenberg is said to have fired blanks from a .357 Magnum just out of camera range to keep Walken's flinching spontaneous.) The Dead Zone wisely takes its time telling the story, and thus allows for some great performances. Walken gives a rich portrayal of the conflicted Smith, and Colleen Dewhurst and Tom Skerritt both do welcome turns in smaller roles. The most fun of all, though, is clearly being had by Martin Sheen, who gives a spirited performance as a complete sleazebag. --Ali Davis

4 out of 5 stars One of the Better Stephen King Screen Adaptations.......2007-05-18

David Cronenberg directs the Stephen King novel about a man who awakes from a coma with a life draining ability to see future tragedies when making contact with people. He also finds he can change these morbid outcomes. The screenplay (not written by Cronenberg or King) remains the films only real flaw besides some questionable supporting cast members. The novel is not a book that would make a perfect story to tell on film so the screenplay sort of stays in the shallow end and spits forth each episode that our hero Johnny Smith expereinces one at a time and without the level of understanding and depth King's book has. That is not to say The Dead Zone isn't a good movie. It's actually a very good movie.

The film remains a semi-classic in the suspense genre. Cronenberg has a way of handling scenes that is very European despite lacking the technical skills of his peers. He can give the actors very specific emotional direction and tell so much with using little or no dialogue. This helps the screenplay because it only offers some flashes of great dialogue. Cronenberg loves taking on films that lack certain aspects and giving them depth in places you never thought could have it. He is a unique force in independant films and earns his stars among the mainstream fans with this film. Martin Sheen surprisingly gives a solid performance here as well. He plays a crooked politician bent on gaining the presidency and earns our hatred quickly. He is actually quite remarkable here.

O.K., now it's time to play favorites. Johnny Smith is played by one of the most identifiable actors of all time. The greatest character and supporting acting of all time in my eyes and here we see him in a rare feature role. He is Christopher Walken and with all the imitations of his wild talk and bizarre off-screen shenanigans aside, he is quite simply an amazing actor. He takes his role very seriously here and turns the film from mediocrity into a very good movie. He takes the character for what readers may have loved about him and that is that he is your every day guy who happened upon some very usual and at times deeply sad circumstances...it just wasn't in the cards or it wasn't meant to be like Smith's Doctor felt. For those who read the novel you'll see subtle references to some of the more robust thinking in the story but never quite enough. There is an underlying message in the film that I really wish wasn't somewhat lost among the communication of the screenplay and the direction. King's novel touches on these things tremendously well and makes us question fate and wonder if time and death is really just so one-dimensional. The film makes you think if you want it to, but not like the novel which is truly one of King's greatest. I honestly believe Walken may have been the only guy on the set who understood this about the story.

If you are looking for a film full of suspense and several exciting climaxes and you like Christopher Walken, then I highly recommend The Dead Zone...but keep in mind that so few King novels have been done real justice with a film and where this is probably not one of them it remains a very good movie. It isn't quite Carrie or The Shining but it is still very good.

4 out of 5 stars This Movie Is a Thought Experiment.......2007-05-18

I am used to Stephen King's work being horror stories. It was surprising for me to discover that this was not a horror story, but a thriller. I will not describe the story for the fear of revealing the plot. One thing I will say is that the description on the reverse of the package concentrates too much on the particulars of what happens to an individual and totally neglects the bigger implication - that this is Stephen King's thought experiment of what would happen if a person possessed a power that most other people do not possess - of the particular power of seeing the future, the past or the present - but elsewhere. What kinds of possibilities are opened for such a person? How would the society and individuals interpret his actions? This is, indeed, a thought experiment in sociology of ESP. I enjoyed this movie and was surprised.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST "KING" ADAPTIONS TO DATE!.......2007-04-08

This is an impressive king adaption. Walkin is mezmerising as the man who can not only see the future, but he can change it. The rest of the cast is excellent in this first rate production of one of my favorite thrillers! This film deserves a completely remastered DVD treatment.

4 out of 5 stars "You're Going To Get An Ice Cream Headache....".......2007-03-12

Stephen King has always been an enigma to me. Once in a while there's some pretty good adaptations of his novels("Carrie, "The Shining", "Misery") though it's his short works that seem to have produced the better films("Stand by Me", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Green Mile"). "The Dead Zone" falls in the category of slightly above average thanks to the stellar direction of horror-meister David Cronenberg and a top-notch cast led by Christopher Walken. There were moments of deja vu here where I felt the film was derivative of a "Twilight Zone" or "Outer Limits" episode but there's also some genuine inspired moments as well. King has some interesting things to say about telepathy and the responsiblities of those imbued with it. Walken has a sympathetic turn here as the telepath whose psychic abilities are foisted on him. Good supporting work by vets Herbert Lom as Walken's physical therapist, Tom Skeritt as a local sheriff, cult fave Anthony Zerbe("The Omega Man", TV's "Harry-O") as a father who hires Walken to tutor his son. Martin Sheen's work here kind of anticipates "The West Wing". Think of Josiah Bartlett's evil twin. Not bad but could have used more cowbell.

5 out of 5 stars The Dead Zone: Highly recommended dvd.......2007-02-16

The Dead Zone, in my estimation, represents Stephen King at his best.
It is an absolutely chilling story of psychic phemomena centering
around a man , Christopher Walken, who can not only see the future
but in some instances can change it. It is Walken's best work and
almost on par with his performance in the Deerhunter.
Martin Sheen is also quite excellent as a meglomaniac senator
who would become President and literally end the world by placing
his finger on the button and enabling nuclear holocaust to ensue.
Many similarities may be drawn to our current leader Mr. Bush.
The film was shot in 1983. It is now 2007. Stephen King
surely had tremendous insight into the future.

Schizoid serial killer Carl Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) has been captured at last, but a neurological seizure has rendered him comatose, and FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughan) has no way to determine the location of Stargher's latest and still-living victim. To probe the secrets contained in Stargher's traumatized psyche, the FBI recruits psychologist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez), who has mastered a new technology that allows her to enter the mind of another person. What she finds in Stargher's head is a theater of the grotesque, which, as envisioned by first-time director Tarsem Singh, is a smorgasbord of the surreal that borrows liberally from the Brothers Quay, Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, Hieronymous Bosch, Salvador Dali, and a surplus of other cannibalized sources.

This provides one of the wildest, weirdest visual feasts ever committed to film, and The Cell earns a place among such movie mind-trips as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Altered States, What Dreams May Come, and Un Chien Andalou. Is this a good thing? Sure, if all you want is freakazoid eye-candy. If you're looking for emotional depth, substantial plot, and artistic coherence, The Cell is sure to disappoint. The pop-psychology pablum of Mark Protosevich's screenplay would be laughable if it weren't given such somber significance, and Singh's exploitative use of sadomasochistic imagery is repugnant (this movie makes Seven look tame), so you're better off marveling at the nightmare visions that are realized with astonishing potency. The Cell is too shallow to stay in your head for long, but while it's there, it's one hell of a show. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This is an excellent scary thriller. I would have rated it higher, but I thought is did lose me for a little while at times. There are some good scary moments in this better than average serial killer yarn. The DVD transfer looks very good and has some cool extras.

This product arrived on time & in good shape. I already knew that I loved this movie & bought it for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful, a Must-See for those who judge a movie by its screenplay.......2007-03-01

The creators of this film had no ceilings on their vision of what they could bring to life when tackling the process of transforming the depths of the screenplay into the heights of a multidimensional cinematic experience. If you can see this on a big screen, do it. With shades of "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover," Tarsem Singh, the director, has fashioned his genius with his crew's technical refinement.

The movie itself is worth owning for the following reasons: Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio on the same screen at the same time, two great actors in two great roles; Jennifer Lopez way outside the box -- JLo only peaks out three times when her accent creeps back in on a few words; the stunning visuals and special effects rival only those of "What Dreams May Come;" this is Tarsem Singh's directorial debut and it displays the mastery of his vocation; and finally, the screenplay itself would have made a fascinating plot line under any direction, but auspiciously came to life under the wing of Tarsem Singh.

Warning: Plot Spoilers ahead. Jennifer Lopez is a psychologist who uses breakthrough neurological technology to enter the subconscious mind of a comatose child and then that of a serial killer, played by Vincent D'Onofrio. However, she has never tried "reversing the feed," which involves bringing the other person into her subconscious mind because of the emotional dangers of such a mind merge. The highlight of the entire movie is when, against the will of her superiors, she decides to do this anyway and brings the killer into her own world where he appears as his little boy self. The incredible battle she must wage between bestowing Compassion for the torture he endured from his father in childhood and delivering Justice for the torture he has inflicted on innocent women as an adult comes climactically to fruition in a sequence of tragically requested and tragically rendered Mercy. The terrible beauty of the death of suffering is brilliantly written, acted, directed and produced in a denoument that is priceless and at the very least worth the cost of the DVD.

Vincent D'Onofrio is a gift to the screen and Tarsem Singh a gift to both actor and audience. Enjoy this film even more the second time for its exploration of innocence versus experience, mercy versus justice, and life versus death.

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't bad, just not great........2006-12-01

Why do so many people feel the need to tell us in their review what the entire movie is about? Just tell us what you think of it!
I thought this was a someone thrilling movie, which is what it was supposed to be. I give it good marks for originality and storyline. Some of the scenes may be taken as disturbing, but the disturbing thing really centered around how Stargher liked to make "dolls" out of female corpses. I didn't think the explanation of why he did that was very good. The way he tortures them is cruel and original. I think Hollywood has so embraced the use of torture in movies that any suggestion of that word gives people all kinds of terrible images.
J-Lo looked really good in this movie. I thought this movie was newer than it is and thats probably why I thought she looked so good. I like Vince Vaughn, but in 2 movies now (this one and Be Cool) it seems like he's "acting" the part and not actually "being" the character.
So this movie kept my interest and had a few twists, it's worth watching if you can handle the gross parts.

4 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast.......2006-11-06

Forget plot when it comes to this film. The "storyline" is laughably trite and most of actors phone in their roles (or simply can't act, but we won't drop names here.) The Cell works best as a visual oddity, something so beautiful and strange that it overcomes it's own flaws to become something utterly unique, if not downright special.

In essence, Catherine (Lopez) is a pioneering psychiatrist who works for a company that has invented technology that will allow her to enter the minds of people in comatose states in a most literal sense - her patient's mind becomes her environment. Enter the deliciously deviant Carl, played with heartbreaking sadness and intensity by D'Onofrio, who is one of Hollywood's most underrated actors. Carl is a serial killer, drowing his victims then bleaching their bodies before suspending himself over them in a sequence that must be seen to be believed. He's snatched another girl and the race is on to find her. They track down Carl, but his medical condition has placed him in a coma. Catherine will enter his mind in order to find where Carl has hidden the girl.

Blah, blah, blah. But remember, you're not watching this for the plot. You're watching it to see Catherine fumble around inside the mind of someone unfathomable to her. It is in these sequences that The Cell takes off and makes itself worth watching and worthwhile. The set deisigners and effects crew pulled out all the stops for this film, and it's stunning to see what happens when artistry and a big budget merge.

There is no doubt that the things in Carl's mind are grusome, twisted, and deviant. There isn't a single instance where we don't see Carl as something to fear. He ranges from touchingly human, as he sits beside the blood-filled bathtub of his first victim and laments how he "made such a mess," to a demon-like being torn straight from a nightmare as he stalks Catherine through the metal-and-flesh abomination of his own head.

The story delves into Carl's sad childhood through the context of his memories in a rather ham-fisted attempt to explain how Carl become the killer. There scenes in which we see Carl as he sees himself are the most effective in terms of visual impact.

Despite the sorrow, despite the oppressive darkness, despite Carl's maniacal glee, everything on the screen is beautiful and meticulously created. The effects team took something that might have been a gore-fest and have transformed it into the dark things that dwell within us, the things we are afraid to see. Some things in The Cell will be like nothing you have ever seen before. Some things in The Cell will be hauntingly familiar.

So why not five stars? Sorry, can't forgive the bad acting or the silly plot. The four stars are there for visual impact, for terrible beauty, and for Mr. D'Onofrio.

As a final note, fans of the visual aspect of The Cell will probably also like the visual work done in Silent Hill. The style is different, but the detail and quality are similar.
