Though the "inspirational teacher" theme may feel done to death, Freedom Writers succeeds because it emphasizes the students as much as the teacher. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don't Cry) comes to a southern California high school bubbling over with naive optimism, but quickly discovers that her unruly classroom isn't easily won over by her good intentions. After a few floundering attempts to connect with her students, Gruwell gives them the assignment of keeping journals about their own lives--an assignment that the class bites into with relish, which eventually bonds them together and pushes racial rivalries aside. This plotline has been made before, sometimes well, sometimes poorly; Freedom Writers, by drawing heavily from the published journals of the students--and thanks to a (mostly) unheroic script, direction that emphasizes individual characters over stereotypes, and rigorous performances from the whole cast--makes the story seem fresh and genuine. Swank does solid work, but the standouts are April L. Hernandez as a girl whose gang wants her to lie and send an innocent boy to jail and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) as a teacher who resents Gruwell's offbeat success. Also featuring Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Glenn (The Right Stuff), and a plethora of strong young actors. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Teaching is (or at least should be) a "Wonderful Burden".......2007-07-01

Although there is a certain political agenda poured on this film, it can all be forgiven due to its one unique message. Teaching is a calling, not a career. And although there are certain merits in the arguments of the antagonist in the story, about the need to be fair to students who want to learn and succeed, a true master teacher knows that differences are made one student at a time, and as a master teacher taught me in a class on teaching; "They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."

So I feel this is an inspiring film for teachers, and would be teachers, in every endeavor, or as the film states, those "blessed with a wonderful burden"

5 out of 5 stars Every student should view this movie!.......2007-06-27

This was an awesome movie! My High School students enjoyed it so much that many of them went out and rented it so that they could view it a second or third time. They have requested to read the "Freedom Writers Diary this next year. Several have been inspired to write their own stories and these are learning disabled kids that hate to read and write.

I rented this movie the day it was released on DVD, then had to buy it & have already watched in twice more. A powerful movie that represents so many of our youth that are too often forgotten, or considered failed w/o any chances/hope. Definate food for thought & a must see for everyone.

There is NOTHING original about this movie. It has been done before and better (Dangerous Minds & Stand and Deliver). It's portrial of the inner city students is watered down and the acting is nothing special. I would not even suggest catching this one on HBO for free.

A lot of taboos are broken in Loving Annabelle, even if the film itself remains remarkably tasteful--even demure. The central characters are two women, a teacher and her student, and the setting is an all-girls school (shades of Lost and Delirious). Annabelle (the smoldering Erin Kelly), a senior, is a rebellious rocker chick--the Beverly Hills version that is, i.e. highlighted hair, black eyeliner, and nose ring. Her senatorial mother ships her off to boarding school to shape up. Annabelle's hard-partying ways are starting to become an embarrassment. Miss Simone Bradley (the sympathetic Diane Gaidry) is a popular poetry teacher. She's a Catholic. Annabelle is not. Simone has a boyfriend, Annabelle is gay. Looks can be deceiving, however, and there's more to both than meets the eye. For one, Simone's relationship is not as secure as it appears. For another, Annabelle's ardor is so relentless it threatens to sway sympathy against her. She seems to have no regard for the damage an affair would inflict on her teacher's career. Nonetheless, Simone is not entirely resistant to her charms. Inspired by 1931's Mädchen in Uniform, writer/director Katherine Brooks preserves the forbidden relationship at the heart of the Weimar-era classic, but drops the political subtext. Consequently, she doesn't take on more than she can handle, but Loving Annabelle still feels a little slight. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Rising star Erin Kelly is Annabelle, a precocious Senator's daughter who falls for her Catholic school teacher, Simone (Diane Gaidry, The Dogwalker). After Simone is assigned to control the rebellious student, she instead finds herself drawn into Annabelle's world. As their attraction builds, the two women must cope with the reactions of those around them. Writer-Director Katherine Brooks unveils this smoldering tale of forbidden love with intelligence, wit and sensitivity.

5 out of 5 stars a very interesting movie.......2007-06-27

I liked the way the movie was made. Not many words uttered, but still the two actresses-Diane Gaidry and Erin kelly-played wonerful.A movie of atmosphere. They stare at each other and say everything without uttering a word.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Story.......2007-06-14

I enjoyed it very much it was slow paced but not boring.

4 out of 5 stars Predictable but so great!.......2007-06-10

As other reviewers have mentioned, you don't have to be a lesbian to love this movie. Whether you're a lesbian, a straight chick, a straight guy, or a gay guy, you'll truly appreciate the raw emotion in this movie.

So what's to like about this movie? Well, the setting of this movie is in a Catholic school and one of the main characters is a lesbian.. and the other main character, a teacher, isn't a lesbian. We all know what's going to happen here. The questions are is it going to happen, and if so, when and how? These questions build some intensity and you just can't wait to see what happens in the next scene. And that's what makes a great movie.

What's not to like? Not much. The ending had me scratching my head a little bit but movies don't always end the way we want them to so that's not enough to make me dislike this movie.

As far as lesbian movies go, this movie is the best I've seen in its genre. In terms of movies in general, this is a good movie, not great. This is the reason why I gave it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Loved "Loving".......2007-06-09

I loved this film. I really liked how Annabelle was gradual and kept her cool. This tension between Simone and her fiance added to the heat. This was not a film about lesbian sex, which (yes, even as a young horny guy) I really liked. The film focused on the forbidden aspects: Catholic school mixed with homosexuality and a teacher/student relationship equaled a great cocktail. Gotta see this film! I have half a dozen times now...and not just "the scene"!

3 out of 5 stars Loving Annabelle.......2007-05-25

The acting is terrific but the ending left many questions unanswered. Not unlike the movie it is based upon "Maedchen in Uniform."

This is a great movie you should get all of them> I really liked them. When i was done i shared them with my best friend and also my mother.

5 out of 5 stars Love's Abiding Joy.......2007-05-14

I believe this movie, as well as the others in the series, are wonderful family entertainment. They teach life lessons as well as how to be a good person. Most importantly, they teach that you can depend on God. I hope there are plenty more of these movies! My family and I love them.

5 out of 5 stars great-clean- meaningful.......2007-05-13

this is a wonderful movie for the family not only providing entertainment but there are humorous moments, tearful moments and spiritual moments---makes us think about a more simple way of life

5 out of 5 stars Love's Abiding Joy.......2007-04-19

The fourth in a series, Love's Abiding Joy takes the young couple Missie and Willie forward in time on their ranch. The visit of Clark for the first time to see his grandchildren, daughter and son-in-law. During the visit Clark helps the young couple get past the sudden infant death of their baby. The offer of a job as sheriff helps the young couple manage to hang on to their cattle ranch during hard times. The unselfish generocity of Missie, who sells her dresser set and her locket to fend off foreclosure of a neighbors ranch. The movie drags slightly in spots, and does not follow the book. The series has been a welcome addition to my DVD library and was given as a gift to my 79 year old mother who adores the series.

2 out of 5 stars good movie. too bad it didn't follow the book's storyline..........2007-04-16

I liked it as a movie, it was a tearjerker. However, you should watch it with the expectation that it's a totally different storyline from the book. About the only things the book and the movie have in common are the title, willie and missy, the fact that they live on a ranch, the fact that they get visited by family, the fact that they have a son already, and the fact that there is a tragedy during the course of the story. In the book, Clark and Marty both came to visit, they already had more children than just Arnie and Aaron, Missy and Willie hadn't adopted any kids and they had two sons. The tragedy that takes place in the book is ENTIRELY different. In the book, there is an accident that causes Clark to lose his leg, but there is no death of a granddaughter. In addition, in the book, there is no forbidden romance and to the best of my recollection there aren't even a family by the name of Dorros. The whole movie is barely even loosely based on the book. Even saying that is pushing it.

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

DVD Features

The first disc is filled out by the theatrical trailer and a Jimmy Fallon-starring Batman Begins spoof from the MTV Movie Awards. The second disc consists of eight featurettes (about 105 minutes total) on a variety of topics. "The Journey Begins" covers the early stages of the movie, including the casting and how director/co-writer Christopher Nolan brought in co-writer David S. Goyer for his comic-book expertise. "Shaping Mind and Body" covers Christian Bale's fight training, and other featurettes discuss the sets (the Batcave is shown being constructed out of wood and sheets), the Batman costume, the Batmobile, the monorail sequence, and the hazards of filming in Iceland. All the behind-the-scenes featurettes are solid but somewhat routine, and while "The Journey Begins" is the widest overview, there's not really any centerpiece documentary (all are 8 to 15 minutes, and there's no Play All option). Interviewees tend to be the same throughout: Nolan, Goyer, Bale (the only cast member to get much face time), and other crew members (it's nice to hear from the stunt people).

Potentially more interesting to fans is "Genesis of the Bat," which covers the comic books that influenced the film, including The Long Halloween, Neal Adams's Ra's Al Ghul from the '70s, Dennis O'Neill and Dick Giordano's The Man Who Falls, and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. Interviewees include DC Comics editor Paul Levitz and artist Jim Lee, but the latter's involvement eventually degrades the featurette into a pitch for DC's All-Star Batman line. A nice bonus to the Deluxe Edition is a mini comic book (DVD case-sized) that has Batman's first appearance (Detective Comics #27), The Man Who Falls, and a 48-page excerpt from The Long Halloween. (Once you get a taste of Halloween, you'll want to pick up the full-length, full-size version.) Filling out the disc are overviews of four gadgets and eight characters, DVD-ROM features, and a variety of poster-art concepts. To get to the features menu, you have to scroll through a multi-page Goyer-scribed comic book, which is a good read, but you can't skip it the next time you want to watch the second disc. Note that the comic book is also viewable in French, and the second disc offers a French menu and French (but not English) subtitles for the featurettes. --David Horiuchi

Description

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of the best Superhero movies ever........2007-07-05

Batman Begins is one of the best super-hero movies of all time. I'm a fan of superhero movies and I've seen all the Superman, Spiderman, and Batman films. But I'm not a fanatic. I don't read the comics or know about the "true" stories of these characters. I don't care about that. I just want to see a good movie. Batman Begins was a summer blockbuster in 2005 and it actually tried to do something none of the other summer blockbusters ever do. It tried to tell a story.

From the title, you learn this is a story of how Bruce Wayne became Batman. Probably the first hour of the movie is spent developing the character of Bruce Wayne, showing how he suffered after his parents were murdered, how he abandoned the privelege of his birth for a live of crime and self-inflicted punishment. The first part of the movie works in part because of the great cast. Christian Bale as Wayne is incredible. Other greats such as Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and a menacing Cilian Murphy make every moment on screen enthralling.

Equally enjoying is the transformation of Wayne into Batman. It is portrayed as realistic as it can considering it is a superhero movie. Wayne uses the recources of Lucious Fox at a secret R&D section of Wayne Enterprises. There, he finds all the tools he'll need as Batman, including an incredible Bat-Mobile.

If you are like me, the George Clooney batman movie kind of soured you on the story of Batman. If so, you must watch this movie. The acting is great, the story is crisp, the action and characters are gritty and real. I can't wait for the upcoming sequel in 2008.

5 out of 5 stars Batman, as it should be.......2007-07-04

This movie did a great job at illustrating the origin of Batman, and portraying him as the Dark Knight.

The movie did a great job of overcoming the campiness of some of the earlier Batman movies.

I hope they produce more Batman movies like this one.

4 out of 5 stars The Best "Batman" Movie.......2007-07-02

Excellent movie depicting how batman became batman. Excellent storyline, you're always thinking what's going to happen next. Great acting. This movie should definitely accelerate Christain Bales career. Good action sequences!

1 out of 5 stars The mask of Zero.......2007-06-28

Apparently, the only path to wisdom and a life packed with acts of kindness is arse freezing and sword and/or kickboxing tricks.
Ridiculous movie designed for brainless pimpled teenagers.
Nauseating philosophy wrapping grandiloquent dialogues.

At least the Rambo suite was honest entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Batman origin.......2007-06-20

I was a little underwhelmed by the special features (there should be more for a product this huge... see the most recent release of Batman (Two-Disc Special Edition) which features documentary on the span of years from producers' desire to make a new Batman to the pandemonium following its release), but as far as the FILM itself goes, without a doubt it is a 5-star story. I put this in the same category as Casino Royale (2-Disc Widescreen Edition) as the two best movies I've seen in five years--interestingly they are both "reboots."

Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great family fare.......2007-06-22

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?

5 out of 5 stars Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02

"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie.......2007-03-31

This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

Wes Anderson's follow-up to the quirky Bottle Rocket is a wonderfully unorthodox coming-of-age story that ranks with Harold and Maude and The Graduate in the pantheon of timeless cult classics. Jason Schwartzman (son of Talia Shire and nephew of Francis Coppola) stars as Max Fischer, a 15-year-old attending the prestigious Rushmore Academy on scholarship, where he's failing all of his classes but is the superstar of the school's extracurricular activities (head of the drama club, the beekeeper club, the fencing club...). Possessing boundless confidence and chutzpah, as well as an aura of authority he seems to have been born with, Max finds two unlikely soulmates in his permutations at Rushmore: industrial magnate and Rushmore alumnus Herman Blume (Bill Murray) and first-grade teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). His alliance with Blume and crush on Miss Cross, however, are thrown out of kilter by his expulsion from Rushmore, and a budding romance between the two adults that threatens Max's own designs on the lovely schoolteacher.

Never stooping to sentimentality or schmaltz, Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have fashioned a wickedly intelligent and wildly funny tale of young adulthood that hits all the right notes in its mix of melancholy and optimism. As played by Schwartzman, Max is both immediately endearing and ferociously irritating: smarter than all the adults around him, with little sense of his shortcomings, he's an unstoppable dynamo who commands grudging respect despite his outlandish projects (including a school play about Vietnam). Murray, as the tycoon who determinedly wages war with Max for the affections of Miss Cross, is a revelation of middle-aged resignation. Disgusted with his family, his life, and himself, he's turned around by both Max's antagonism and Miss Cross's love. Williams is equally affecting as the teacher who still carries a torch for her dead husband, and the superb supporting cast also includes Seymour Cassel as Max's barber father, Brian Cox as the frustrated headmaster of Rushmore, and a hilarious Mason Gamble as Max's young charge. Put this one on your shelf of modern masterpieces. --Mark Englehart

Description

RUSHMORE is the story of a gifted, rebellious teenager named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a 10th grader at elite Rushmore Academy. Editor of the school newspaper, captain or president of innumerable clubs and societies, Max is also one of the worst students in the school, and the threat of expulsion hangs permanently over his head. Max's world is rocked when he falls for elegant 1st grade teacher Miss Cross (Olivia Williams) and he plans to erect an aquarium in her honor -- then finds himself competing for her affections with his friend, steel tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray), the wealthy father of two of his classmates.

5 out of 5 stars Get Them In Your Crosshairs And Take Them Down..........2007-06-24

This is probably my favorite movie of all time.
The story concerns one Max Fischer, 15 years old, student at the illustrious Rushmore Academy. But Max is not your average student- he's one of the worst.
Max (Schwartzman) befriends wealthy industrialist Herman Bloom (Murray), and falls in love with Rushmore's newest teacher, Rosemary, a widow from England, and unleashes some truly machiavellian schemes to get her to fall in love with him, (including trying to build an unauthorized aquarium for her on school grounds, backed by Mr. Bloom's millions), getting himself expelled in the process. Meanwhile, the married Herman also falls in love with her and they begin to have an affair, which sets off one of the funniest sequences in American film history; watching a 50 year-old man being attacked by bees that have mysteriously invaded his hotel room and intentionally running over a 15 year old boy's bicycle always makes me smile.
In the end, Max learns alot about life and love and friendship and all of that, and makes peace with Mr. Bloom, Rosemary, the memory of his deceased mother and the end of his tenure at Rushmore Academy. While watching, ask yourself why Max does what he does, why he never wants to leave Rushmore- his reason, never stated, is among the most touching aspects of a character that I have ever seen in any movie.
The soundtrack is truly amazing, as with all of the Wes Anderson films; check out The Who singing "A Quick One While He's Away."
The best thing I can say about this movie is that most people will see a bit of themselves and the people they know in the characters. Truly a wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most original and entertaining comedies of the '90s..........2007-05-23

Since making his directing debut with the 1996 cult caper film "Bottle Rocket," Wes Anderson has established himself as one of film's most exciting young directors. His second film, "Rushmore," is a witty, heartfelt and often amusing film that features a hilarious performance by Bill Murray.

Anderson wrote the quirky script with his right-hand man, actor Owen Wilson, with whom he also collaborated on "Bottle Rocket" and "The Royal Tenenbaums." The story follows the trials and travails of high school student Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a sharp kid who focuses his attention on a plethora of offbeat extracurricular pursuits (fencing club, Latin, playwriting) rather than his studies.

In between attending to his various activities at Rushmore (the name of the private school he attends), Max develops a crush on Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), an elementary school teacher at his school. He also befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), an eccentric millionaire whose two sons attend school with Max.

Things soon fall apart for Max: The school expels him, Miss Cross denies his flirtations, and Blume begins courting Miss Cross himself. That sets up an extremely funny tete-a-tete between Max and Blume, highlighted by the scene in which Blume runs over Max's bike with his car.

As the intriguing love triangle of Max, Blume and Miss Cross plays out, Max finds solace in his caring father and a female student at his new school. The ending, which features all the characters coming together to watch Max's newest play, is entirely satisfying without being hokey or cynical.

Schwartzman, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather"), exhibits a great knack for comedy throughout "Rushmore." But Murray steals the show with a masterfully funny turn that scored him a Golden Globe Nomination and Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. In one unforgettable scene, Herman suggests that his sons invite Max to their birthday party. "There's gonna be girls there," replies one. "Yeah," adds the other, "Get your head out of your a--." Murray's initial deadpan reaction will have you howling; his subsequent reach into the back seat to pummel his son will have you rolling on the floor.

Anderson, who captured the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, exhibits a sense of craft that's rare for comedic directors. Rather than depend solely on physical gags or even amusing one-liners, Anderson uses set direction, art direction and music to enhance his vision. Even if your sense of humor doesn't jive with Anderson's, you'll walk away from "Rushmore" with an appreciation for his careful attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars You either love it or hate it........2007-05-12

You have to love the little moments because this movie is made of little moments. I watched this before I knew it was a comedy and when I found out it was I figured they just couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. This movie makes me feel like there are lots of things moving and changing that have nothing to do with me. A lot of people say they don't like the movie because they think Max is a prick. You're supposed to feel that way, I think. You're supposed to forgive him for that because he's got something special in him, or at least that in his case he knows about it. But it also seems like some people don't like the movie because it's different. I guess that if you're patient and you like the little things, you'll enjoy this movie. Also, if you feel like you're left out or sort of an outcast you might enjoy this movie. You know, the kind of person that doesn't have red or hammer as the first thing they think of when you ask them for a tool and a color.

3 out of 5 stars Not really my cup of tea....*Spoilers*.......2007-03-20

2.5 stars. I'm not really sure how I feel about this movie. I truely didn't contect to Max. I, too, found him to be a pompous spoiled brat and often times bordered on the creepy side in his pursuit of Mrs. Cross. And I'm not sure where his air of entitlement came from. For a boy with such humble orgins, his character seems totally out of whack. Bill Murray surely has his middle-aged blues shtick down (Lost in translation/Broken Flowers). he, too, was not a character I could root for. I understand he was not happy with the direction of his life, but the whole affair thing just seems so typical...and I'm not sure if he and Mrs. Cross were going to pick up things where they left off or not. Max never does pick up his grades or cut back on the extracurriculum activies--so I'm not sure about his character arch. He's pretty much the same boy at the end of the film as he was in the begining. Oh, except, he does admit his father is a barber now. Overall, check it out at your own peril.

3 out of 5 stars Great flick for nerds.......2007-03-11

OK...my title is a little mean, but I found this kid, whom we're supposed to "just love" a little mean and the fact that I lost sympathy for him early on (due to his meanness) kept me from rooting for him. This is defintely a film in which we are supposed to root for the hero (or the anti-hero)...the adorable short nerdy kid with a big nose and glasses. His mother died of cancer, his father is a poor-but-good hearted barber,
he got into this fancy prep school on a scholarship, he is so smart that he solved a math problem that stumped MIT profs in a matter of minutes, etc. And the school bully picks on him.

Well he isn't really that nice, himself. He's insufferably rude to the Chinese girl, destroys Blume's marriage without a second thought, disables Blume's car which could have killed him. But he's still "adorable nerdy Max" so we're supposed to overlook these quirks and love him. I found his egotism much more annoying than cute.

I suspect that guys who felt like nerds in middle school might like this film due to some sort of wish fulfillment but beware, he doesn't end up with the pretty school teacher in the end! Maybe if another, more naturally likable actor had starred I'd have more interest in him..(Leonardo DiCaprio captured our sympathy as a young kid, in spite of committing huge crimes in Catch Me if You Can and I think that a lot of that was due to DiCaprio's natural sweetness) Jason Shwartzman (whom I actually liked a lot in Marie Antoinette) just didn't grab my heart the way the script obviously intended. Only once, when he smiled in the end did he seem a little sympathetic. For most of the film he sails through his antics with a vague superior smirk on an opaque, masklike face. There's no light there except an evil glint in his eyes when he's seeking revenge.

He looks like a cross between Woody Allan and Groucho Marx (were those his real eyebrows?.) Maybe if you find those guys endearing, you'll love Max. Otherwise... well, I warned you.

On the plus side, Bill Murray was genuinely touching and funny and many of the supporting cast were very good. I liked the music too.

Novelist James Clavell wrote, produced, and directed this 1967 British film (based on a novel by E.R. Braithwaite) about a rookie teacher who throws out stock lesson plans and really takes command of his unruly, adolescent students in a London school. Poitier is very good as a man struggling with the extent of his commitment to the job, and even more as a teacher whose commitment is to proffering life lessons instead of academics. The spirit of this movie can be found in such recent films as Dangerous Minds and Mr. Holland's Opus, but none is as moving as this one. Besides, the others don't have a title song performed by pop star Lulu. --Tom Keogh

Loved it - enjoy Sidney's movies and it brought back a lot of good memories of my teenage years and will watch it many times, I'm sure.

5 out of 5 stars A real classic.......2007-06-10

Sidney Poitier had a pretty good year in 1967- this movie, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "In the Heat of the Night". 3 different movies and 3 different roles but his role as the teacher here may be one of his best.
The movie was filmed on location in London but this was not the London of Buckingham Palace- it was the London of Jack the Ripper. The students here are a working class bunch badly in need of education and discipline. Poitier dominates the movie in a great performance and Lulu sings the title song ( which became a #1 song). This is a movie that holds up to repeated viewings and it's a film everyone should see at least once.

Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft had been playing their respective roles as Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, on Broadway for some time before director Arthur Penn (The Left-Handed Gun) built a mesmerizingly beautiful film around their layers-deep performances. Duke is astonishing as the deaf, blind, mute Keller, who awakens to an awareness of language under Sullivan's determined guidance. Bancroft is fascinating and focused. Penn wisely kept his adaptation unencumbered by cinematic indulgence. The black-and-white film is sparse and charged with the immediacy of the drama. The script is by William Gibson, who also wrote the original play. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars The picture fooled me........2007-06-27

I guess I was expecting a colorized version of the movie because of the picture displayed. I guess I'll pay attention next time, however the movie is the one I wanted.

4 out of 5 stars A Must-See for EVERYONE!.......2007-05-23

And that's no exaggeration. The Miracle Worker has everything you could possibly want in a movie and more. The powerful ending scene is as beautiful as it is gut-wrenching; poignant doesn't even begin to describe it.

As for the extras, there's really only one worth mentioning, and that is the original theatrical trailer. I enjoyed watching it because it gives you a glimpse into the past and shows you that although movie trailers were originally quite simple, they gave the audience so much and made them want to run out and see it.

Watch this movie with your family and I'm sure you will all cherish it for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Dated but still a terrific landmark .......2007-04-01

From its earliest version as an orginal live-tv Playhouse-90 drama (gone are the days when tv could give us quality like this. We're stuck with 2nd-rate sex farce and toilet jokes), to the hit play, to the hit movie, this film displays almost every overdone effort made by Hollywood, starting in the late 50's, to mimick European "New Wave" techniques. It's to Bancroft's and Duke's credit that the production doesn't descend into total hysteria from beginning to end. The Playhouse 90 original, which I recall seeing as a teen myself, was somewhat more subdued and, IMHO, more powerful and effective in the final scenes. That said, this is still a remarkable piece of cinema -- despite the fact that there's not a single accurate ethnic speech coloration in the whole movie, and it has some of the laughably worst attempts at Southern accents I've heard since Gone With the Wind and the Tammy movies. It's incredible to think that the movie's imbecilic producers didn't want to import Duke or Bancroft from Broadway to recreate two of the most memorable dramatic roles of the 20th century. The excellent b&w print now seen on DVD is largely the work of Cuban director / photographer Ernesto Caparros who had been involved in cinema since the 1930's. Not only will tv never again give us work like this, but I can imagine how many car chases and napalm bombs Hollywood would have shoved into the script if "Worker" were produced today. Thanks to Amazon for including this very good DVD in their free-shipping list. Younger viewers who know Duke only from cable replays of her vapid tv sitcom will probably sit with mouths dropped and eyes popped open when they see how tv utterly wasted the supurb talent Patty displays in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars WORLD CLASS.......2007-03-26
