An Enemy of the People (Broadway Theatre Archive)

Fire and passion infuse Arthur Miller's earnest adaptation of master playwright Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People. A small town in Norway is just seeing its first hint of prosperity, thanks to the burgeoning popularity of its healing springs. But Dr. Thomas Stockman discovers that the springs are polluted so badly that they will poison the town's first big wave of tourists. Shutting down the springs for renovation will cripple the town; keeping them open could spread an epidemic across Europe. It seems like a simple black-and-white situation, but it soon spirals out of control. No character is safe from Ibsen's scourge--the motivations of wealthy conservatives, the liberal press, and even the Doctor himself are mercilessly laid bare. The play has obvious resonance with current political issues and is performed with such feeling and skill that it is sure to spark discussion, if not an argument or two. Though certainly satisfying for adults, anyone with children who are beginning to become politically aware should make this one a must-see. --Ali Davis

Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. 'Enemy' plays like extension of TV's golden age.......2003-09-25
Though "Enemy of the People" aired on National Educational Television (the precursor of PBS) in 1966, Arthur Miller's adaptation of the Ibsen classic feels like an extension of the "golden" era.
In the Norway of the 1880s, an idealistic doctor (James Daly of "Medical Center") discovers that water from a new spring is contaminated with deadly bacteria. Because the spring is expected to bring a solid tourist trade to this small town, his repeated attempts to convince the town's officials and citizens are met with hostility -- most notably by the mayor, who happens to be the doctor's brother (Philip Bosco).
The acting here is uniformly excellent, delivered in normal theatrical style. Daly is ideal in the lead role, never sounding a false note. Kate Reid is solid as his concerned wife, though sometimes encumbered by wild motivational swings in her character, as written.
Bosco is appropriately maddening as the doctor's brother, though viewers may be somewhat amused by his stage mustache, which becomes skewed during one sequence.
A number of very good actors from the period inexplicably go unbilled on the box, and are even absent from the IMDB entry. Among them are George Voskovec as the doctor's scheming father-in-law; James Olson as an unscrupulous newspaper editor; and William Prince as the battle-scarred publisher of the newspaper. Tim Daly, best known for his role on "Wings," plays one of the doctor's young sons; he is the real life son of the late James Daly.
Rue McLanahan appears in a bit role.
In what might have been rather startling for TV viewers of the mid-'60s, the mild profanity of Miller's adaptation is kept intact.
The play was shot on black-and-white videotape, and the print that was used for this DVD is very good. It's always so much better to see the straight video from this period, rather than a kinescoped copy.
"An Enemy of the People" will be rewarding viewing for any lover of classic television.

Before the Little Big Horn..........2004-03-12
Pulled from the 17 episode ABC series from 1967, "Crazy Horse and Custer: The Untold Story" is a pleasing way to spend 90 minutes if you're a fan of the western genre. We've all heard the story about the battle of the Little Big Horn, but this movie introduces us to the main characters of that battle long before that ill fated meeting. It shows how Lt. Col. George Custer took a rag tag bunch of soldiers and made them into the fine Seventh Cavalry unit they were. It also takes the viewer to the first meeting between Custer and Crazy Horse and how they had to be allies if they were to live to meet later.
Starring Wayne Mauder (who?) with Slim Pickens (under utilized) and Michael Dante as Crazy Horse, the cast features Mary Ann Mobley and the venerable Robert F. Simon.
The print featured in this release was bought by a company called Liberty Entertainment who put a title on in the beginning and end and chopped out any reference to 20th Century Fox who originally produced it. The print itself looked like it had been bicycled around and the opening credits just might make you seasick from the motion. The color is fair and once you get into the film the print is not too scratched. Not bad for the price you pay.
This movie besides being available individually is also in a 10 pack called "The Wild West". For about triple the price of this, you can get 10 pretty decent westerns. You can view this item on Amazon.com ....

Bad Timing.......2003-07-04
ABC thought it was on to something: let's take a time-honored TV form (the western) but give "the kids" someone they can relate to--a rebellious, long-haired action hero. Thus, the idea to base a series on Lt. Colonel (nee General) George Armstrong Custer was born. On paper, it looked like a great idea; Custer had for many years been revered as a great Civil War general (which he was) and effective Indian fighter (which he wasn't) who died, "tragically," at Little Big Horn.
Alas, by the time the series hit the air, Custer wasn't such a hero. Rather, he became a symbol for the terrible treatment of Native Americans. Also, he was being seen less as a lovable rebel and more as a megalomaniacal officer who effectively murdered the entire 7th Calvary with his recklessness at Little Big Horn. Richard Mulligan's portrayal in "Little Big Man" was probably only slightly exaggerated.
All that having been said, the show had promise...a lot of stock western kind of action, but with a slight edge. Relatively accurate historically, too, as far as character names and such. Many liberties are taken, however, in the name of "good TV." The biggest drawback, as one reviewer noted, is the really poor quality of the print used. I've seen older TV shows with better footage.
The series didn't run that long. Personally, I wouldn't mind a DVD release of all the shows, with upgraded prints. In the meantime, we have to settle for this.

Death of a Salesman
Incident at Vichy
With his trademark unrelenting honesty and conviction, Arthur Miller examines a major Holocaust issue: the failure to assume responsibility and the consequent moral and social guilt of those who refuse to fight evil. Set in a detention room in Vichy, France during the 1942 German occupation, a number of people have been rounded up and are awaiting interrogation before being sent to concentration camps. It is soon obvious that they are Jews with false papers that will not stand up to close scrutiny. While individual stories flow past the juror's eye, events soon focus on Leduc (Harris Yulin), a psychiatrist, and an Austrian prince (Richard Jordan), who recognizes his guilt of silent complicity and his failure to act responsibly while the Germans rose to power. Miller raises theoretical and ideological arguments and brings up the question of where responsibility lies. Notions of the nature of personal sacrifice, issues of personal blame, and a debate on how much each person is obligated to help in a larger crisis are addressed in this truly important and provocative television event.

A Memory of Two Mondays
Dramatizing a compacted group of memories passing over several years, Arthur Miller's vivid comedy-drama portrays the nature of life during America's Great Depression. The emphasis is on mood and characterization as Miller draws on his own personal experience to evoke what the 1930s were like for workers to whom a job--any job--was everything. "...a beautiful play superbly performed." --The New York Daily News. With Jack Warden, Harvey Keitel, Dick Van Patten, Estelle Parsons, and Jerry Stiller.
