This mix of corporate skullduggery and trashy sex stars Kari Wuhrer (whose career has ranged from Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time to Anaconda) as a Machiavellian executive tired of being passed over in favor of male execs. Suddenly she falls into a romance with the heir of a glass-making fortune (Stephen Baldwin), with whom she has lots of hot sex and concocts a plan to rob his father of $40 million. But just when everything seems to be going her way, someone pulls a double-cross, and Wuhrer has to scramble before she loses everything. Spider's Web features lots of bare flesh and a fairly generic plot and dialogue. Wuhrer is enjoyably conniving; Baldwin, who once seemed the most promising of the Baldwins, seems to have put his talent and his career on autopilot. --Bret Fetzer

E.B. White's classic tale gets a Babe-like makeover in Charlotte's Web, a delightful and well-made film that is sure to become a family classic. Directed by Gary Winick (13 Going on 30), the new version eschews the musical numbers of the 1973 cartoon and mixes CGI with live-action animals. Dakota Fanning brings the right amount of chutzpah to Fern, the young farm girl who rescues a runt, Wilbur, from death and visits him every day at her Uncle Homer's farm. But it's Wilbur's friendship with Charlotte the spider (voiced by Julia Roberts) that ultimately saves him from the "smoke house" (a kid-friendly alternative term to the slaughterhouse), for Charlotte's talent for weaving praiseworthy words about Wilbur into her web turns the Zuckerman farm into a tourist attraction. The more tragic elements of the book are handled sensitively by Winick, working from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), and Roberts' soothing, maternal voice (who knew it would work so well?) makes it all go down easy. It turns out to be just one of many perfect celebrity voice-casting choices, for the farm animals, voiced by an all-star cast including Oprah Winfrey (the goose), Robert Redford (the horse), Steve Buscemi (Templeton the rat), and John Cleese (the sheep), lend plenty of sharp humor. But it's two corn-hungry crows, voiced by Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and OutKast's Andre "3000" Benjamin who steal the show. (Ages 4 and older) -- Ellen A. Kim

Product Description

The classic story of loyalty, trust, and sacrifice comes to life in this live-action adaptation. Fern (Dakota Fanning) is one of only two living beings who sees that Wilbur is a special animal as she raises him, the runt of the litter, into a terrific and radiant pig. As Wilbur moves into a new barn, he begins a second profound friendship with the most unlikely of creatures - a spider named Charlotte - and their bond inspires the animals around them to come together as a family. When the word gets out that Wilbur's days are numbered, it seems that only a miracle will save his life. A determined Charlotte - who sees miracles in the ordinary - spins words into her web in an effort to convince the farmer that Wilbur is "some pig" and worth saving.

My Oppinion: Charlotte's Web is an excellent movie very entertaining for all ages.

About the film: The movie is about a spider who bfriends a young pig and tries to save his life by writing on her web's and the two becomes good friends.

My Oppinion 2: This movie is a great story about friendship. this was a very good film, they didn't change much from the animated version which is great.

f you like this movie then check out the soundtrack to the movie, then the original animated movie.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-07-03

I loved watching this with my children. They kept rewinding it back to their favorite parts. Dakota Fanning really brings Fern's character to life, and Templeton was hilarious. This movie, taken from the classic by E.B. White, should be both read and watched, for, although most of the main characters are animals, they personify something significant about the human spirit. Some pig, some movie! Enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Sweet and Fun.......2007-07-02

Charlotte's Web, based on the classic tale, is a sweet adaptation of the classic novel. It is becoming increasingly rare that the entire family can sit down together and enjoy a movie together. This is one that is perfect for families to enjoy as the movie dislpays the importance of acceptance, friendship, and sacrifice. The voice work here is outstanding, especially with Julia Roberts as the voice of Charlotte. Dakota Fanning is charming as usual. This is a sweet and fun film well-worth 4.5 stars. Enjoy. My family sure did.

Great, great, great! I cried the whole time because the animals are just soooo cute! The picture was colorful, and the community where the town folks lived reminded me of home in Louisiana. Wish I could move to that farm when I retire. All should watch it and learn a lesson from the animals about being different but having the same idea about helping a friend in need.

1 out of 5 stars toxic waste.......2004-07-31

Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects, Sex Monster) plays a big shot son of another big shot who gets involved with the beautiful Kari Wuhrer (Anaconda, Eight Legged Freaks) in a game of deciet and passion. Why couldnt it of been passion and canoles? The 2 are after a crapload of money, and both become entangled with one another, but can they trust each other. Boring, with way too much bad acting. Only interest for guys who like Wuhrer and want to see her in the buff and for those fans who already know Baldwin's career is in the john, but want to watch another movie he is in ruin it. Baldwin and Wuhrer Executive Produced this debacally mundane fart joke

2 out of 5 stars Ouch.......2004-05-27

If it wasn't for Kari Wuhrer's attractive naked body that appears throughout the movie this movie wouldn't "work" like it did.
Kari plays Lauren, who is an analyst at an investment banking company. Baldwin plays Clay and he is the son of a very rich owner of a client firm. Together they make a plan to get all the rich man's money without killing him.

Good only if you like Kari Wuhrer...you'll get to see a lot of her...if you know what I mean.

2 out of 5 stars Not so much silk in this web........2003-09-02

This is truly a "B" quality movie and like many "B" movies they are Rent-ers NOT Buyers. There was oddly some good acting by Stephen Baldwin, but that is only to Stephen Baldwin standards. For the Kari Wuhrer fans there are a couple of goods scenes where she is "Performing at Her Best". OK movie to see but, stick to the video store with this bad boy

4 out of 5 stars Brentwood Media Version.......2007-03-18

My copy of this flick is from an outstanding 10 DVD (double-sided)Brentwood compilation called "Nightmares From the Crypt" which has other cult classics like "Don't Look In the Basement", "Messiah Of Evil", "Circus Of Fear", "Horror Hotel", "Jack the Ripper" and the like. This version is 102 minutes & not rated. I really liked this movie and is one of the most played of this compilation.

Klaus Kinski gives his usual manic, if brief, performance and is quite entertaining (as he usually is). The filming of the castle is very dark & creepy, which is perfect for a late-nite viewing. While this is not a gorefest, it is an above-par haunted house story with some kinky subplots interspersed throughout. The ending sequence where Alan Foster is escaping the vampires who inhabit the castle into the morning light in slow-motion is quite freaky & hilarious. Me & my buddies got a huge kick out of this one late late night when we watched a huge portion of this compilation enjoying our favorite tobacco. In the end, Kinski shows up & eerily looks to the sky muttering "no one will believe this".

I highly recommend this film for fans of this sub-genre (late 60's/early 70's horror). I also strongly recommend the Brentwood 10 DVD compilation "Nightmares From the Crypt" (see my review on this), because it is the BIGGEST BANG for the buck & highly entertaining!!

5 out of 5 stars truly fantastic film !!!.......2006-10-06

I bought Web Of The Spider not really knowing anything of this film ... was seeking a horror film fest 2 years ago for Halowwen night and I said what the hey and bought it . I am so glad I chose this film because it is very eerie , bone chilling , spooky and awesomely sexy !!! The whole film in itself give you a feeling like you are there in London with Alan the main character and everything he goes through ... it seems like you go through . I mean if you like films that give you a spooky feeling and are not pure gore , then Web Of The Spider is your kind of film . Awesome script , fantastic camera work and the actors are very sexy !!!! This is a 5 star film in my book . Happy Hauntings !!!

3 out of 5 stars Low Budget European Import........2003-11-06

The only thing more amusing than a cheap domestic horror flick is an imported variety. The unwary viewer must accept Klaus Kinski (of all people) as Edgar Allan Poe. Then we have clean-shaven Tony Franciosa, wearing togs from the 1970s, as the 1840s guy who accepts the inevitable challenge to spend the night in the haunted castle. You get the idea. The film is weird rather than scary. Ghosts abound, but they don't jump out and say, "Boo!" The haunting wraiths have other things in mind. The picture begins to resemble a gothic romance, in places. At least it tries to be different. On the plus side, we can award points for effective atmosphere. The film might be considered as camp entertainment, but we aren't sure that the Italian filmmaker had purposeful satire in mind. The entertainment is strictly for die-hard fans of schlock horror flicks. (This reviewer is a master of this type of foolishness). In that context, it is worth collecting. Others beware. ;-)

4 out of 5 stars Addendum: On CIRCUS OF DEATH.......2003-05-30

In my review of WEB OF THE SPIDER I noted that "matters weren't clarified much by the release of Brentwood's CRICUS OF DEATH 4 DVD box set, featuring the exact same video transfer".

That is INNACURATE, folks; while I did not stopwatch time it or check the run time on my player, the Brentwood Media CIRCUS OF DEATH DVD with THE WEB OF THE SPIDER does contain material that had been excised from the same print used by Timeless Video for this release. They ARE made from equally dismal transfers, and perhaps even the same one, but bits have been sliced out of Timeless' release [i.e. Tony Franciosa wriggling on the bars of the gate after being spiked] that have been clipped off the VHS release ...

Of additional note is that I just noticed Amazon has an "R" rating and 94 minutes for their item description [as does the Timeless box], but Brentwood lists it's WEB OF THE SPIDER as "Not Rated" and provides a 102 minute running time ... I would then state that this tape is probably best suited for collectors, or those who still haven't figured out the benefits of DVD technology. Worth getting, but it is now documented that there is a better source available.

4 out of 5 stars Deserves Restoration: CALLING ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT ..........2003-05-29

Seriously; this is one of my alltime favorite films of any genre, period. I saw it way before CASTLE OF BLOOD on a late nite creature feature as a kid [I distinctly remember the little pistol and the guy with the white beard], and while I acknowledge that it IS essentially a re-hashing of BLOOD's basic story premise, the result is much more than just a technicolor remake with some more explicit violence.

I think that director Marghetti wanted to revisit the castle he had envisioned in the brilliant 1964 film, but pay more attention to the mood and substance of a moment, than break new ground or worry about "innovation". And one of the most frequent comments by WEB OF THE SPIDER [or IN THE GRIP OF THE SPIDER, as it is known overseas] detractors is that it "doesn't hold up" to CASTLE OF BLOOD. Hogwash -- they are different movies made almost a decade apart.

The leading roles in SPIDER also define the film, where in CASTLE OF BLOOD the story kind of leads a cast of those who were [pardon my upstate NY ignorance] more or less unknowns into territory that horror hadn't charted before ... WEB OF THE SPIDER comes jam-packed with subtexts if only due to the presence of it's top billed star; Klaus Kinski's Edgar Allen Poe is onscreen for perhaps 8 to 12 minutes of screentime, during which he gets tanked, trashes a chess set, growls put-downs at Tony Fransciosa, then just sort of gloomily looks up at the sky and says "They'll never believe it" ... No wonder it's initial viewers were confused; by 1972 Klaus Kinski had a significant "cult" following, and his absence from the majority of the film speaks of a jumbled agenda, and the result is kind of a jumbled narrative. Kinski's role in the story is supposed to be that of the catalyst who spark's Alan's evening of horror, but instead he has kind of an Oscar the Grouch kind of quality, popping out of his can when needed to cue the closing score.

Tony Franciosa is properly confused and does seem genuinely frightened as the unlucky Alan, becoming more and more unhinged as the climax approaches, but has too much of an "everyman" quality to really stand out. Solid work, but who is this Alan he was playing? All we know is that he is a writer and an American.

Far more interesting is the presence of Helga Line, always a personal favorite of mine and here appearing in what must have been a pretty high profile international release, and her icy, sexy demeanor just drips from the screen along with her push-up 1970's wunderbra. Just seeing her in a film is a pleasure in itself, but although her dialogue was no doubt dubbed Helga actually does some genuine acting in this film and is very effective; it is unfortunate that she never got a chance to do more work like it. Rrowrr.

Helga's role was also apparently subject to some clipping that might have earned the film a more broader audience -- another qualified comment about WEB OF THE SPIDER is that a bit more sex & some additional spatterings of blood would have given the film a bit more punch, and as it is relies upon Maghetti's use of mood and suggestion to pull the story together.

And what a story it is ... WEB OF THE SPIDER, just like the earlier film, is one of the best "ghost story" films ever made. It's not just a haunted house or haunted castle movie, it is a film about these people who are forever condemned to relive their violent deaths and claim new lives -- truly a Poe like sense of utter macabre, with zero hope of ever seeing daylight.

My advice? Watch this movie alone, in the dark, and all the way through without stopping -- of help might be the CIRCUS OF DEATH 2 disc DVD set by Brentwood Media that also features the same version of the film sold here on VHS ... let the story take you where it will, and the effect of the film will hit you afterwards as you realize how the various storylines all fit together and lead to a conclusion that is just too inevitable to be anything other than Poe.

AND A WORD TO OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT -- this would be a good one for you folks to look into ... a "restored", uncensored international version in a nice letterboxed format with proper color tinting would result in a movie that a whole generation of horror fans have been urged NOT to take too seriously might recognize as being the triumph of cinematic vision that WEB OF THE SPIDER really is.

I'd give it 5 stars but the transfer print on both the VHS and CIRCUS OF DEATH set is really atrocious ... Get busy, AB.

In the penultimate collection, director Ryosuke Takahashi picks up some of the plot lines of this supernatural mecha series. The all-important "path of the kai" forgotten, Yoshiro insists on rescuing the psychic Miharu, who has been kidnapped by the combined forces of Symbol and the U.S. military. He attacks an American airbase in his SSDF mecha suit. Mutely awaiting her fate, Miharu experiences a series of flashbacks very similar to the ones Rei Ayanami undergoes in Evangelion. Meanwhile, the powerful Gowa family and Yoshiro's SSDF unit have joined the cabal organized by the jingoistic Nishida, who hopes to return Japan to an idealized past. By manipulating economic forces, Nishida plans to provoke the United States into staging a fake terrorist incident in Japan, then intervening militarily. After the events of September 11, some viewers may be uncomfortable with the terrorism story line. Rated 12+: Violence, tobacco use, brief nudity. --Charles Solomon

Description

5 out of 5 stars Simply last year's best movie!!!.......2002-03-17

This DVD is definitively the best I have ever bought. This movie is a whole experience. I have watched it over and over and every time I enjoy it even more.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Animation, Dull Story.......2002-01-13

At first look Gasaraki looks very good in terms of mecha design and animation. Gasaraki is undoubtedly one of the best looking animes I have ever seen but the story is very uneventful. They try to mix up mythology with mecha (kind of like in Neon Genesis Evangelion), but the story is lacking. In the first couple of episodes in the series there are actually some decent action scenes, however as the story progresses all they do is just talk. It basically becomes some kind of political drama mixed with some not so original religious type story. It is just very slow and in my opinion VERY VERY boring. It just drags on and on about politics and that stupid kai thing. For people who are looking for action and good story this will not be for you as this mediocre anime is seriously lacking in both.

5 out of 5 stars Best yet.......2002-01-11

There aren't enough stars in all of Amazon to let me describe how much I liked these episodes. A fight of political powers to determine the shape of the world, in the setting of a disaster so believable and well presented it felt like it was ripped from tomorrow's headlines. The only problem I can think of is that sometimes there are so many subtitles you can't possibly read them in one watching - but this one DVD (and one series) that certainly need multiple watchings to fully appreciate.

3 out of 5 stars Gasaraki is starting to slow a bit..........2001-12-11

I have bought every single Gasaraki movie as it came out, feeling lucky to get 3 episodes per DVD and enjoying the mix of mech fighting and story. But lately Gasaraki hasn't been as much about Mech fighting, its been more about the story. Don't get me wrong, the Gasaraki storyline is awesome. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next episode every time. But as my friend put it, the story could all be put in one episode. There is really no reason for it to be extended to 10. If you've been following this series and this is just the latest installment, then buy it and love it. But if you have seen one or two of the DVD's and you want to see this one just cause, then rent or borrow it. There isn't anything on this DVD that you can't memorize from one sitting. If your looking for some real mech action, buy Macross Plus or Appleseed. And of course Neon Genesis Evangelion.

5 out of 5 stars This series just keeps getting better and better........2001-12-06

You will be glued to your seat for this latest installment of Gasaraki. True to standard anime form, everything big and epic happens right at the end of the series. Gasaraki has been builing momentum right from the start and with disc 7 it is speeding along at full bore.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Peacemaker Vol. 5.......2005-08-26

Once again, I am dissapointed (though not surprised) that this disc has only 3 episodes. It does, however, have some good (though short) action scenes. (some SPOILERS ahead)

Volume 5 starts with the weakest sidestory and thankfully ends it. The fallen lord and his "magician" meet their end at last. The concept of having an Okita look alike was interesting for a while, but people mistaking him for the real Okita was just not plausible. The third episode on this disc was the highlight for me. The scene with Susumu and Tetsunosuke arguing was well done and I was happy to learn more of Yoshida's intentions. It did have a bit of a sad ending however, and leaves you with a bit of a cliffhanger.

The animation dissapointed me, though. The rain didn't look great either, but still gave a good atmosphere. As a bonus, the fold-out packet in the case had some good extras and artwork.

If you're still with the series, buy this DVD. Though it is one of the weakest so far, it still has some good things to offer.

3 out of 5 stars One stinker and one truly classic horror film.......2005-09-25

I found Circus of Fear to be a thoroughly bad movie in so, so many ways. Even the most enthusiastic fan of Christopher Lee should think twice about seeing his uninspired performance here. Sadly, almost all of the other actors come off worse than he does. It is very important to note that, while this film is capable of invoking horror on the part of the unfortunate viewer, it is in no way a horror film and is in no way associated with Hammer Studios. I should admit that my own intense dislike for the circus may make me a little biased, but I don't think even Ziegfried and Roy could enjoy this story. We start with a rather complicated robbery of an armored truck, and then follow one of the robbers to a rendezvous on the confines of the Barberini Circus. Several deaths ensue, two or three rather outlandish storylines converge, unhealthy-looking animals are exploited in ways only a circus can be responsible for, we are forced to endure circus people at their most crude and painfully annoying worst, and we are rewarded in the end with a final plot twist that seems manufactured out of thin air.

The plot to Web of Spider sounds a little hokey; a writer/journalist journeys to London to meet and interview Edgar Allan Poe, and he ends up spending a night in a haunted castle. I understand that this 1972 film is a remake of the black and white classic Castle of Blood, but having not yet seen the first film I can not compare the two. All I can say is that this is an extraordinarily, genuinely creepy movie. The inclusion of Edgar Allan Poe (played somewhat questionably by Klaus Kinski) is really quite unnecessary as the adventures at the castle more than stand on their own two feet. For his part, however, Poe claims that all of his stories are based on true events, and he has a new story in waiting when the American journalist Alan Foster (Tony Franciosa) accepts Lord Blackwood's bet that he cannot spend a full night in his haunted castle. I won't say much about what happens over the course of this strange night, except to say that it is far from just your typical haunted house story. The first ten or fifteen minutes of Alan's exploration of the house were really and truly creepy, on a level that had me engaging in my own dialogue with Foster. I remember saying "don't go in there" and "nothing good will come of this" several times. Years of sating my compulsion for horror in all its forms has all but atrophied my "spooks" nerve, but this movie dug way down and hit that nerve several times, much to my uncomfortable delight. I even sort of jumped once, and that is unheard of.

I don't feel the movie was very predictable, either, and that is another reason I enjoyed it so much. I'm not saying it's difficult to see the ultimate conclusion coming, but I for one was never completely sure how things would play out until the very end. The Gothic look and feel to the movie is outstanding, really, and the cast (aside from Kinski) is superb. Michele Mercier is particularly captivating in her role. I would praise the other cast members one by one, for the effectiveness of this movie is a direct byproduct of their outstanding work, but I really do not want to risk giving away one single thing about the night's events. If you enjoy old school horror, especially of a richly Gothic variety, Web of the Spider is just what the doctor ordered. I hesitate to make a claim as bold as this, but, at least for the time being, this is the best, most deliciously creepy haunted house movie I have ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars Two classic horror movies!.......2004-06-10

        Description

Walter Pembroke III is a pampered pig who enjoys a lavish lifestyle, including membership in the exclusive Barnyard Social Registry. Tiffany, Walt's best friend, is a tough-talking spider who gets little respect and even fewer breaks. This unlikely duo's friendship is being put to the test however by Walter's tangled web of lies. When a pie disappears, Walter blames UFO's. When a bowl breaks it's the ghost's fault. Can tiffany convince Walt that lying doesn't pay? Or will he continue down his shady path of lies?
