They should've included the Silver Edition extras........2007-06-28
I won't be buying this one as i sent away to uk for the Silver version.
It's very nice. I've always loved this movie.
Brian Blessed's audio commentary is wonderful and it's well worth getting the uk version for that extra feature alone.
Voice track.......2007-06-22
I'm glad this edition is being put out because I had the OOP version and the voice track was off which was annoying to watch the mouths open but the words were off. So I'm happy to get an edition of this movie that is watchable and enjoyable! Plus Sam was one of my crushes in middle school!
WELL IT'S ABOUT TIME, UNIVERSAL!!!.......2007-06-21
Why did they wait so long to release the Saviour Of The Universe Edition. It's a campy movie, but it brings back a lot of memories for me. I must've written these bozos numerous times if they were ever going to re-release the film on DVD in the first place. Although I have the U.K. version with the director's commentary, the 30 minute interview with Mike Hodges, a theatrical trailer and photo gallery, I do admire Alex Ross's artwork and I'm looking forward to seeing what's on the U.S. version and I'll be buying the soundtrack with the "Flash Remix" I'll be ready on August 7th.
Movie a 5; Lacking most Important Special Feature.......2007-06-19
The Special Feature that must happen is the one where Queen's soundtrack is the only thing you hear. Including each time it is used to "hear" movement. That soundtrack is beyond amazing.
The movie itself is a tribute to how special effects were done prior to the advent of computers. Why not a featurette on how these techniques were done? Interviews with the various actors, the costumer, etc. would also be wonderful. The costumes were amazing! An inspiration to any costumer.
I have the Region 2 DVD and am very happy with it.
I really don't understand.......2007-06-18
I saw Sam Jones at a convention and he said he recorded commentary for a future region 1 release. And from what I understand, The "Savior Of The Universe Edition" doesn't have it. So I say, WTF?
I could care less about the artist who drew the new cover and how the movie inspired him. He has nothing to do with this movie.
How about an interview with the surviving members of Queen about the making of the soundtrack? How about including the commentary from Sam Jones and Melody Anderson. Or Max Von Sydow, who is still alive. And the writer and director. Who cares about a guy that had nothing to do with the film?
I am happy that it is remastered. But that should be a given. I own the original region DVD and would really only buy this one if it had good extras. Part of me is still hoping that might happen one day.

From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Hannibal) and renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) comes a gripping true story about bravery, camaradarie and the complex reality of war. Black Hawk Down stars an exceptional cast including Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!), Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan), Eric Bana (Chopper), William Fichtner (The Perfect Storm), Ewen Bremner (Snatch) and Sam Shepard (All The Pretty Horses). In 1993, an elite group of American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers are sent to Somalia on a critical mission to capture a violent warlord whose corrupt regime has lead to the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis. When the mission goes terribly wrong, the men find themselves outnumbered and literally fighting for their lives.

Its War..........2007-06-27
This movie hasnt delivered the story is ok but it doesnt satisfying and deep
like other films the picture quality is great especially the actionscenes with
all that mud and particles flying arround great sound too.
good but not great or perfect movie.
Black Hawk Down-Blu-ray.......2007-05-28
I'm previewing the Blu-ray version of this film.
Video: picture quality was slightly above average with some grain in dark parts opf the movie. In other part of the movie, the picture appeared really sharp and Hi-Definition-like. Overall quality was good, but not very consistent throughout the whole movie. I viewed this movie on Hi definition projector with 101" screen on the new Samsung BD-P1200.
Audio: Slightly above average
Finally, it's worth mentioning that the image froze only once, but still that seems to be a common and annoying problem with Blu-ray discs. Cleaning the BD with a microfiber cloth help sometimes, but it takes away the fun if you have to take out the BD and clean it, then put it back in the machine and wait for it to load and then you have to go to the selection menu and try to figure out where you were before the disc froze.
great movie, stunning pic quality.......2007-05-13
im sure most of us already know the movie but what comes as a pleasant surprise is the sharpness afforded by the HD transfer. every pore on the face and every bead of sweat jumps right out at you! in fact, anything with texture - war ravaged walls and rocks are all brilliant crisp and tactile. the bonus is the behind-the-scenes making of documentary (pretty long) which is very comprehensive and could be a video on its own. highly recommended.
Great film.......2007-05-13
I bought it for collection since I've seen it many times. Hi def though is something else; it's a must see. This DVD in special has a lot of subtitles, including portuguese whitch is rare and great for us brazilians.
region code.......2007-05-07
I bought a playstation 3 in australia to watch blueray disc's. but they are region encoded so I could not watch the movie

A David Chiang Classic.......2007-01-20
I originally saw this movie years ago and I knew then that I had to include this film into my collection of martial art movies. David has made numerous films for the Shaw Brothers this is not a SB product but most of them were brilliant he's a leader in kung fu movie history in empty hand and weapons combat. This film is one of his many gems and probably has more fight scenes than any of his other movies, the movie centers around him trying to protect a royal family from traitors and in the process basically taking on a hole army. I give it 5 stars for plot, action and overall concept plus theres never a dull moment here.

DVD Samuri Banners.......2007-06-22
I really like most everything Toshiro Mifune appears in. I had the opportunity to meet him when both of us were a lot younger. You felt the integrity of the man when you were in his presence.
samurai banners.......2007-04-11
This is the first time I have purchased a japanese Samurai movie other than those by Kurosawa, and I was disappointed. I made the decision to buy based on one of these reviews which said it was on a par with the Kurosawa's.
To me the only redeeming factor is Mifune who I find fascinating - but the film was a poor immitation of any of those by Kurosawa. I felt it was slow, contrived and not at all grippng.
Had I not seen the others then maybe it would have been more watchable, but it was almost as if the director was copying Kurosawa style but frankly he was not good at it.
A Very Good Epic Samurai Film!.......2007-01-02
"Samurai Banners," is an epic samurai drama film clocking in at almost 3 hours long. The film, directed by Hiroshi Inagaki, is set in Japan between 1543 to 1562. It is a time of constant strife. Some of the viewers noted that their DVD does not have subtitles. There must have been a problem with their versions, as the one I own has perfect subtitles, which are in different colors to allow the viewer to see who is talking. And although the film is long, it is definitely well worth the purchase. The legendary Toshiro Mifune gives a fine performance as Kansuke Yamamoto: One of Japan's great Generals during the wars of medieval Japan.
Kansuke Yamamoto (Toshiro Mifune) was a military strategist for the Takeda clan. And although the film is based on the life of Takeda Shinken, whose reputation is even greater today in Japan, than that of either Tokugawa or Toyotomi, the film gives a great look at his greatest warrior General: General Kansuke Yamamoto. The films climax is very good, where the battle of Kawanakajima [a historic battle in Japanese history] nearly cost the Takeda clan its power, due to a disastrous mistake by Kansuke Yamamoto. The costumes in the film are great, and compliment the great look of medieval Japan.
The film will give you the viewer a very good look at what the cause of the wars during medieval Japan were like, and why they were fought. Among the DVD specials inside the disc, include a biography of the films characters and another dealing with the wars of medieval Japan. And why they fought. It is advisable to view this prior to viewing the film, as it will give you the viewer a better understanding of the nature of these wars: an overview which will really help you understand the historic events of these times. Many viewers compare this film to Kurosawa's classics, and this is not fair. The film stands on its own merits. This is a very good film in its own right. I have all of Kurosawa's films, but there are other good films out there too. I recommend it for your DVD collection, it is a worthwhile film to own.
Subtitle Trouble.......2006-11-04
Fine flick for its genre. I found that the subtitles do not play on my TV and seem to not be compatible with my DVD player; I couldn't yell you why, it's a fairly mainstream machine, and not being a Japanese speaker makes it a little tough to fully enjoy. The subtitles DO appear if I play the moive on my portable player or computer. Go figure.
More drama then war........2005-08-09
I am bit surprised to read the two previous reviews. The AnimEigo edition of Samurai Banners proves to be well presented and its subtitles with its different colors to see who's talking proves to be one of the highlights. This movie got excellent subtitles!! Maybe that reviewer who didn't get the subtitles should check his DVD player. He may have turned something off.
I enjoyed watching Samurai Banners despite of its 163 minutes or so length and the fact that its more of a samurai drama film with a war theme then anything else. Toshiro Mifune who have been considered as Japan's verison of John Wayne is well cast in this movie as it followed the destiny of the Takeda clan through many campaigns. For those who may care, Takeda clan also featured in the film, Kagamusha. Mifune's character, Yamamoto Kansuke (real historical figure), joined the clan, and it helped lead it to many victories, gaining the trust and confidence of his lord and along the way, fall in love with his lord's concubine. The movie is well acted, scripted and directed although fans of bloody battles may have to look else where.
Although the movie seem to dragged here and there but overall, despite of the length, the film moves with great deal of interest. The audience will be caught up in the going on of the Takeda clan and its struggles as they faced stronger foes as the movie goes on. For any Mifune fan, this movie should be on the mandatory buy list. Although Mifune's fortune fell after he left his partnership with Kurosawa, this movie still showed him at his best.
There are couple of interesting extras in this package. There is a one about character biographies which should be watch before the movie since it introduced the viewer to all the major characters of the movie. It probably be easier to followed the film. Second for more die-hard fan, there is Interactive Program Notes which gives you a super basic history lesson on period of warring warlords in Japan. It might be interesting to read this before watching the film. It may help understand the motivation behind some of the characters. Both features are pretty short in duration.
Overall a pretty good film, not boring and although bit pricy, a definitely worth the money.
(History minded viewer should read the book Kawanakajima 1553-64 by Stephen Turnbull for more in-depth historical look at the background of this movie. Its part of the Osprey Campaign Series #130.)

One of the best!.......2006-09-16
When I was a kid, I used to watch this one over and over again. Definitely a great story with interesting plot and very talented stars. A must-see!
I am reviewing the remastered, uncut, letterboxed, english dubbed, red sun version of this 6 venomed classic.......2006-04-26
If you have not heard of red sun and don't have an all region player, than this is THE perfect version.
Now first off it wouldn'tplay in my toshiba dvd player, but worked just fine in my crappy audiovox 5-discer. When the movie starts, you will be in absolute heaven seeing a crisp, clear picture of johnny wang(lung fei) who is playing the evil governor or something that wants to set north and south shaolin against eachother. He comes up with this great scheme to kill the 3 south masters after they have fought. Nobody knows how they died, but REVENGE WILL TAKE PLACE. Now I am a huge fan of all old school kung fu flicks, but I have to say that cheng cheh has made better stuff than this. Not much better but this tries to be mre stright up hard core fighting. No comic book deadly venoms style, or people being crippled and get revenge. The story is just non existent. You find out right away pretty much everthing that is going to happen. And I have to say thaty I love lo meng, but you do have to wonder after like showing about 5 minutes of jst close ups of guys chests, is this a gay movie? But then the training and action scenes happen and you forget all about this. The only thing i can explain this as is that it is cheh's vision. He wants to see the most buff, acrobatic dudes he can find to put on the screen. Cheng Cheh has a great appreciation for manly men. And us men are well represented here. The final fight is kind of like the whole movie, unbelievable. But there are enough deaths to keep any cheh fan happy. And the fighting is justy superb. The training is about as grueling as you are gonna get and it is welll worth it for the final fight, done in the same style that five venoms and return of the venoms was. So you can see that Cheng had it in mind for these 6 guys to be the greatest action stars of all time. It is just a shame that Run Run Shaw wouldn't pay these people because he could have made much better movies than these.
The letterboxed red sun version is perfect and sadly only has english dub but has original soundtrack which surprisingly differentiates from the average music they usually just pull off of the shelf. And to go along with the great picture the sound is a pretty good 2-channel output.
Nice plot that keeps you enticed.......2004-09-12
This movie is one of my favorites.. I have quite a collection and enjoy revisiting Invincible. Won't get into specifics but the fighting matches are awesome.. love the fact that the movie displays a tense and avengeful atmosphere. More importantly, I personally favored the way different styles can be combatted by another this was indeed a Cheh Chang classic. Did I mention the entire 6 venom mob crew are in it !
Another Hit.......2002-06-29
If you like Chang Cheh films, then this is another "must buy". Another political corruption storyline with Wang Lung Wei provoking a destructive confrontation between Northern and Southern Shaolin to do his work for him. The best fights are in the climax when Philip Kwok (formerly known as Kuo Chiu) and his pals match skills against the other Shaolin team. The DVD picture and sound quality aren't bad. More valuable now since the passing of the legendary Chang Cheh.
This Is The Real Stuff.......2002-02-19
A masterpiece of the Venoms era-- matched (not surpassed!) only possibly by Masked Avengers for sheer exuberant heroism and villainy! This is the film that set the tone for so many others-- Evil-general-deceives-rival-kungfu-schools-into-wiping-one-another-out-type-stuff, and is replete with the lengthy, laughable training sequences that made the Venoms famous. You'll never eat scrambled eggs again! So what if it's about as believable as pro wrestling? You get to see bodybuilder/gymnasts somersaulting though Chinese gardens disembowelling one another with amazing weapons, all the while proclaiming their eternal camaraderie!!
Unlike later efforts, this one even features a moving camera, so unlike films such as Masked Avengers, actors aren't forced to stand in tableau looking sideways... they can actually walk around the set-- a bonus! And it's a beautiful, colourful, letterboxed print that appears to have been made from film, and not video. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Old "skool" kun fu.......2006-05-29
I came across this particular flick while checking out a few other Don Wang Toa flicks, I noticed it had a 4 star. Having seeing that I felt compelled to check it out. I duly a greed it's a 4 star. I though this flick was very entertaining from the start to the finished. It had fight scenes after fight scenes, consistant throughout the flick. Importantly, the DVd transfer is acceptable. it has a very tight story I though, and very easy to follow. I would recommend this to any old school kung fu lover out there. Wang Tao certainly perfomed in this one!!

A Thinking Person's Epic.......2005-09-26
The Warlord is a medieval epic about a Norman knight's love for a peasant girl he may not have but whom he keeps anyway, and the consequences that ensue. It realistically depicts peasant life in 11th century Normandy before Christianity has become firmly established and the attention to detail is impressive. The costumes are accurate, right down to the bowl haircuts and horses' trappings, and were clearly designed with the Bayeux tapestry in mind.
Charlton Heston does very well as Chrysagon de la Croix, the Norman knight in question. He manages to be both stern and tormented at the same time, and Guy Stockwell is marvelous as Chrysagon's spiteful, witty, and very jealous younger brother. Notable performances are also made by Richard Boone, Chrysagon's retainer and friend, Maurice Evans, the village priest, and Henry Wilcoxon, the Frisian prince. (Wilcoxon had his own day as a heroic heart throb; he was Richard the Lion Heart in Cecil D. DeMille's 1935 epic, The Crusades). Rosemary Forsythe, the peasant girl, is initally very good. She is both attracted to and afraid of Chrysagon and conflicted about her betrothed, Marc (James Farentino). She plays all this out very well, but seems to lose interest half way through the movie, and her acting becomes wooden and unconvincing.
The fight sequences are a bit long and do not advance the story much but there is a good lesson here about medieval seige warfare - the battering ram, a wonderfully constructed siege tower, catapults and flaming arrows. And in a time when there were no computer enhancements, the battles are well staged and effective.
In summary, the Warlord is an intriguing movie that has a bit of everything. Although it is almost 40 years old, it doesn't seem dated. There is action, adventure and romance, with a little education thrown in. The ending is ambiguous enough to have allowed a sequel - Son of the Warlord? The Warlord Returns? Duke William's Revenge? It is too bad that Charlton Heston has retired for health reasons. He would have been terrific.
Worthwhile Dark Ages drama.......2005-09-02
Charlton Heston stars as Chrysagon, a noble 11th century Norman knight in a very solid action, adventure flick "The War Lord". Heston, appropriately measured in his role has been commissioned by his superior, the Duke, to procure and defend a strategic piece of land bordering the sea and the site of frequent raids by barbaric Frisian hordes. Supported by his younger brother the scheming and envious Draco played by Guy Stockwell and by his loyal appointed guardian Bors, personal tough guy favorite Richard Boone, they fight off a Frisian attack capturing a young prince.
Heston's troops take over the castle in a land inhabited by a pagan Druid village. Following the Duke's orders Heston rules with a gentle hand but becomes smitten with a fetching peasant girl Bronwyn played by Rosemary Forsyth. Bronwyn is bethrothed to local villager Marc played by the horribly miscast James Farentino. The manipulative Stockwell coaxes Heston into declaring his right as lord of the land to have relations with the virgin bride under Druid law. They predictably fall in love and Heston refuses to release the girl raising the ire of the villagers.
Aided by some of Heston's minions who betray him, the Druids scheme to mobilize the Frisians in a rescue attempt of the young captured prince. They hope to garner revenge against Heston and his men and seize the peasant girl Bronwyn. Some first rate battle scenes soon ensue.
Director Schaffner accurately captures the dirty squalid conditions of the times and the costumes enhance the film's authencity. The action scenes, mixed well with romantic sections, are very tasty complete with catapaults, boiling oil, battering rams, and close combat with swords, spears and lances. This underrated movie features a nice array of acting performances particularly by Stockwell, Boone and Heston. A bonus was seeing fine character actor Henry Wilcoxon as the leader of the Frisians.
love and war in medieval times.......2005-04-11
Based on Leslie Stevens' play, "The Lovers", this Hollywood production added many action scenes to make the story into an epic full of 11th century battles, giving Charlton Heston, after having starred in "Ben Hur" and "El Cid", another athletic part to show his horsemanship, and ability to wield sword and axe like the Norman knight he plays in this film; it also shows his tender side, with Bronwyn (Rosemary Forsyth), a peasant girl he lusts after, and then falls in love with after bedding her on her wedding night, using the pagan rite of "Prima Notte", a law (supposedly fictional) that allowed the war lords of the time the privilege of deflowering the virgin bride (used also as a plot device in "Braveheart").
Heston is excellent as Chrysagon, the Norman knight, and he is backed by a marvelous supporting cast, with gruff and wily Richard Boone as a man who is Chrysagon's friend and protector, and best of all, a brilliant performance by Guy Stockwell as Chrysagon's devious and evil brother Draco; he steals every scene he is in, with a flamboyance that is just short of "over the top", and is vastly entertaining.
Other cast members of note are Maurice Evans as the Priest, Niall MacGinnis as Odins, and James Farentino as Marc, Bronwyn's husband.
The costuming and set design are meticulous in detail and period, and the circular castle is marvelous, with an eerie cold atmosphere.
Director Franklin Schaffner (who would work with Heston 3 years later in the box office hit "Planet of the Apes"), keeps the pace rolling with a lot of action, from hot oil poured from the castle tower, to fireball catapults and other medieval methods of warfare. Lovely cinematography by Russell Metty, much of it filmed in Northern California, and a score by Jerome Moross add to the enjoyment of this fine film. Total running time is 123 minutes.
Patience required, but richness promised.......2004-12-20
Charlton Heston plays Chrysagon de la Crux, a noble sent to take over a small but troubled fiefdom. The obstacles he faces include a jealous and scheming younger brother (Guy Stockwell); strife between the Druids (often championed by the locals, and with whom de la Crux has some sympathy) and the Church (whom de la Crux represents, with a friendly but ever-watchful priest seemingly omnipresent); and, de la Crux falls in love with a local girl, but a local man (James Farentino) is already in love with her. De la Crux wants to do his job well but, with this many factors to balance and that much volatility bubbling beneath the surface, it is a nigh impossible task.
Is this a great movie? No. But, it is a very good movie. Charlton Heston gives his usual solid performance as the thoughtful, skilled, reluctant hero. Richard Boone is marvelous as Heston's veteran soldier/squire. Stockwell is all silk and acid as the younger brother with no real role to play in life, but more ambition than he knows what to do with. The movie is slow at times, and the rural Norman countryside is portrayed as somewhat harsh and bleak. The film is neither a tragedy nor a triumph, but a story of survival.
A Period Piece With Heart.......2004-11-07
The Warlord is one of those films that is rare. It's a period piece that was made at a time when they were primarily cinematic spectacles. But in the capable hands of Franklin Schaffner, this was really a film about tormented lovers who came from two different worlds- practiced and believed in seperate religious teachings, and who were misunderstood by all who surrounded them.
It opens in a time in history where warring parties fought over a fragmented Europe, while the conquered peasants tried to exist as best they could, trying to survive and carry on with their own traditions and beliefs, regardless of who held the momentary reigns of power.
It's a moody, well wriiten piece of work with a very adult theme (especially for the time in which it was made- the early 1960's).
Charlton Heston gives one of his finest performances, playing the battle weary warlord who is sent to govern and watch over them. Richard Boone and Guy Stockwell are excellent as the friend and brother in tow. They play a marvelous ying and yang to how Heston must govern- and how he must deal with the warrior threat that looms close by. Maurice Evans is a delight as the bumbling, bewildered priest and Rosemary Forsyth is properly mystical with what little she was given.
The only flaw is the ongoing battle scenes towards the film's end. They were forced on Schaffner by the studio to beef up the spectacle/commercial aspect of what was really a love story, and a study of pagan beliefs. It doesn't destroy the film but I came away wondering how good this film might have been, if they'd let Schaffner make the film he was trying to make.
Still, the mixing of Christianity and witchcraft- the love that springs between the lord and the pagan girl, from what initially is a cold act of conquest and a manipulation of pagan tradition....
It has some very interesting exchanges, excellent performances (especially Heston and Stockwell) and is definitely worth the watch.

Not accurate.......2007-05-27
Some images used in this program are Japanese pictures from various periods. One of them is Prince Shotoku from 6th century in Japan and nothing to do with this program. I began to wonder what is correct and what is not. So, I stopped watching it.
I swear not to buy A&E biographies anymore.......2001-09-17
How could history be put so simply like A&E does in every biography I bought about China and Asian history? I try to understand these works are for the general public, but the conclusion is that general public is being mislead with this kind of material. My first experience was with the Mao's biography, then with the one about Marco Polo. The worst is that I bought also the Pol Pot and Chiang Kaishek biographies and have not seen them yet.
The Gengis Khan biography is full of awkward commentaries with emphasis on a supossed bloody nature of the mongols. They were no bloodier than were the rest of societies that engaged on conquest, to say the europeans themselves. The Gengis Khan was more than strategist and a ruthless leader of hordes and tribes from Mongolia.
There is no analisys about the rising of the Yuan dinasty that was created after the mongols took CHina and the cultural, historical and political implications of the east-west contact.
The emphasis is put on extremely doubtful anecdotaries, that produces a sensasionalist account about the creator of the biggest empire of the world history.
Grossly inaccurate.......2000-12-22
It was pathetically inaccurate. The sole source they cited was the Secret History, and they had a Professor of Asiatic studies from Columbia U for historical advisor; yet, even ignoring the usual 'they were vicious barbarians' slant, the piece was riddled with mistakes. The first thing I caught was a misquote from the Secret History citing the legend of the five brothers as a story about Chingghis's immediate family. After that I paid more careful attention. They did not mention his name 'Temujin' once but rather saying he was born 'Genghis'. How can they claim to be biography and not even mention the man's name? They went so far as to claim his wife and mother started the war between him and Jamuga out of jealousy over their gay love. Another glairing mistake was the when and why of invading the Song. They glossed over any political interaction as Genghis 'finding an excuse to go to war'. For an amateur historian like me to so easily spot as many mistakes as I did is pretty sad. A waste of money!
Excellent One Hour Film.......1999-12-23
Film is excellent....several known scholars in the field of Asian history are talking heads among the recreated battle shots, etc. An intro and voice-over by Peter Graves during the film provide enough info for someone embarking on a study of the Yuan Empire or the Mongol Empire.

Customer Reviews:
This is not the original movie: million eyes of Sumuru.......2007-03-27
This movie is incredibly slow, unexciting and dull.
I have bought it because I saw a couple of scenes from "million eyes of sumuru" and stupidly thought that "thegirl from rio" was just a new title given to an old movie, million eyes, in fact.
as this is not the case and for some odd reason "million eyes of sumuru" is not available on DVD or VHS I suggest you to lobby for the issue of million eyes better than buying this stupid movie.
The Girl from Rio.......2006-07-03
Actually, I thought I ordered Girl from Rio and instead this one was delivered. I've ordered again and I hope this time it will be alright.
About the film, no coments. Besides the rare scenes of the Rio old street carnival, it was a junk. Well, maybe I should consider some because it was produced in the 60's I guess(?), but seriously, it shouldn't even be in the list of your distinct company's list of DVDs.
JESS FRANCO FUN.......2004-06-26
The ever dodgy JESS FRANCO directs a pretty good flick with this one. GIRL FROM RIO is absolute cheese, largely incomprehensible, but benefits from a fun score and silly 60's costumes for the female army.
This is actually sillier than any episode of WONDER WOMAN with it's island of all women. In GIRL FROM RIO there exists a city of all women called FEMINA. It is ruled by the mysterious SUMURU (Shirley Eaton). Oddly enough the name SUMURU never appears in the credits but only in the film. In the credits she is billed as SUMITRA...whatever.
The best part apart this DVD are the extras where JESS FRANCO and SHIRLEY EATON kind of trash each other. JESS FRANCO saying that SHIRLEY EATON was 'unworthy' of legend status and EATON grumbling about FRANCO shooting a lesbian scene involving her character using a body double.
GIRL FROM RIO is still frustrating FRANCO and does not compare to brilliant FRANCO films like THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z, and VAMPYRO (...).
Excellent.......2004-04-15
James Bond style 60s softcore sci fi. Excellent if you like that kind of stuff. Movie about a race of women trying to take over the world. Done with Class.
A real curiosity !.......2004-02-02
The plot of "The girl from Rio" is quite simple: Sumuru and her army of women want to exterminate the whole human male gender. Actions scenes are not the best moments of this movie. The interest is somewhere else. It's much more its weird and wild atmosphere, which will enjoy the Franco aficionados. It's difficult not to be fascinated by the world of Femina City, the lair of the female warriors. Shirley Eaton and Maria Rohm are simply amazing in all her sexy suits and there is also a wonderful song called of course "The girl from Rio". The final scene on the ship is a typical example for Franco's touch!
The quality of this DVD is in a good shape. As Bonus we have some interviews of Jess Franco, Harry Alan Towers and the very natural Shirley Eaton. A lot of posters and stills complete this DVD with of course a Jess Franco bio and some facts of Sumuru.
"The girl from Rio" is a real curiosity and I'm sure Franco friends will enjoy it. Blue Underground did again a fine job.
