The animation is so life like similar to 3D.......2007-05-16
The animation is spectacular, I wish these type of cartoons were made when I was a kid. My 19 month grand-daughter loves this video, and the music too. I'm not too sure what those "other" reviewers are talking about when they state that the graphics are scary, and wishing they made them the old-style way, to them I say "grow up with the times and enjoy, it's only a movie, and if that's your opinion be real, it's only a cartoon, you're judging waaaayyy to harshly.. I wish they made more movies like this, it looks spectacular on my 50" Toshiba that I had also bought through Amazon, saving me a great big bundle.
Care Bears - Journey to Joke-a-Lot .......2006-11-05
My granddaughter loves it.She watches it 2 to 3 times a day,Need i say more.
Don't reject the new in favor of the old!.......2006-07-18
My three year old absolutely loves both of the CGI animated Care Bear movies and we sing along to the songs together. The new soundtracks are catchy and have great messages/themes. The story line for this particular movie is appropriate, well paced (not too fast) and provides a valuable lesson--be careful how you treat others, and sensitive to other's feelings. I would strongly recommend this movie, without hesitation, even if Funshine Bear did "become" a boy...I view all of the Care Bears as sex neutral and my 3 year old is oblivious, regardless. Enjoy!
My daughter loves it!.......2006-03-22
My two year old loves those carebears, especially Journey to Joke-alot. It is funny and she loves to dance along to the songs!
I am a carebear fanatic BUT..........2006-03-15
...I will have to shoot myself if I am forced to watch this again. The animations are very annoying, the court jesterish feel is very annoying and the portrayal of Funshine Bear (my favorite) as a pre-teenaged boy jokester is NOT my idea of what carebears is about. I was NOT impressed with this movie!

Description
Killing Joke need little introduction. Taking their name from a British phrase referring to an ironic or paradoxical situation or event, their brand of apocalyptic post punk and fiercely intense live shows fast established them as one of the most original bands to emerge from the UK in the late 70's. Fronted by self confessed misanthropist Jaz Coleman, his influence, along with guitarist Geordie and bass players Youth and later Raven, can be found in bands such as Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Therapy?, Nirvana and many more.
Killing Joke - XXV Gathering: The Band That Preys Together Stays Together was filmed on their sold out 25th Anniversary show at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London and captures the band at their very best. Singer Coleman's intense stage presence is unmatchable still after all these years while the titanic guitar sound of Geordie is awe-inspiring. Tracks like War Dance,Wait, Psyche and Song and Dance seem more relevant now than the day they were written, while opening track Communion is mesmerizing. Finally it's now Killing Joke's time.
Killing Joke- XXV Gathering: The Band That Preys Together Stays Together is the only DVD available from Killing Joke.

Must have for any KJ fan OR lover of power music.......2007-05-13
Absolutely one of the best performances, both of band and fans I have ever seen (and I've been to some great shows). The DVD includes all the favourites including a lot from the first album, but my favourite and a real rare treat, is to see them play their very first single - ARE YOU RECIEVING which just explodes with this version.
SUPERB camerawork and editing, showing all band members in their glory. Their new drummer Ben, shines as great as original Big Paul which is a treat in itself.
Only thing that is a minus - and this is completely UNFORGIVABLE is the audio mix which reduces the great Geordies guitar to a whisper. If I didnt already know the songs, I would never hear the beauty of his playing as it is lost somewhere in the background of the mix. A new fan might just make out the basics, but the growling is lost and that was frustrating for me. No fault of the band - but whomever did the mix SHAME ON YOU!!!!
This is DJ Mont (from Kitchen Club Miami '80's) recommending this to all KJ lovers everywhere.
WHAT A SHOW !!!.......2007-04-21
Shot at one of several sold-out nights of their 25th anniversary reunion gig at the Shepperds Bush Empire in `04, this is a hell of a dvd. The setlist covers all of their career focusing on the heavier songs; some early classics, some mid-period, and 2 from the second `03 S/T album. The concert itself clocks in at a vigorous 88¨+ but it's so good you'll swear your clock is broken coz it actually feels like 45' ! . It's shot in widescreen but owners of conventinal TV's (like myself) should not worry coz the aspect ratio is not filmic so black bars are not that restrictive. The stage is very narrow to accomodate the massive stack of output lateral speakers which are covered from sight by hanging drapes with the name of the band lit from behind. The shots of the audience are numerous and cleverly done . Editing is dynamic but not MTV jerky.
The band are very static throughout the concert except for Jaz's stacatto marching motion and other antics. His face is covered in the coolest makeup he's ever used and his long, curly hair is now flatenned against his neck for effect; he's in a plain pilot-like brown jumpsuit . His now hoarser voice is very low in the mix and this suits the current trend in this kind of music. Good move.
Geordie's guitar is not as high in the mix as it should but this flaw is corrected after the 2 first songs, although whoever mixed this panned it so a lot of the time it is irritatingly louder on the right channel ( as oppossed to KJ 2003 in which it was on the left side). Patience. He still uses a hollow body but gone are the Marshall amps and the sound is now exactly like on the last album.
Paul Raven's bass guitar rumbles as a virtual earthquake and young drummer Ben Calvert wished he could reach Paul Ferguson's heels. Patience again. He's a competent fill-in......if you can forget the past. The toms and bass drum have an amazing presence but the rest of the kit is somewhat lost in the mix, especially all of the cymbals. Pity.
A special mention for incredible keyboardist Nick Walker whose instrument, now higher and more prominent in the mix, gives KJ a yet more industrial feel.
This dvd has an incredibly high output level so even the tiniest of amps will be able to attain realistic volume level. A nice treat.
The stage is flooded in monochrome red light, which in this case has been given a pinkish hue so as to not develop the usual dot crawl video artifacts; it darkens the stage somewhat taking away some of the impact but contributing to the gloomy atmosphere. 5 stars for the show, 3 for the sound. A must have.
There's a 35'PRICELESS interview with Jaz as a bonus but I can't find the easter-egg for the bonus rehearsal and souncheck at the end of it. Bummer. If you want another KJ dvd, there's a gorgeous VHS transfer from a show filmed for german tv show Rockpalast at an american festival in `85, on which they presented their recent ¨ Night Time ¨record. That one is corker and better than this one in many an aspect.
True to form..........2007-01-10
The boys are back in motion and tighter than ever, it seems. The anger and frustration with the business of making MUSICK and "Getting it out there" seems to keep one of my favorite bands coming back for more. All hail Killing Joke! Without them modern music would have deep holes...
Almost like being there myself!.......2006-04-24
Since Killing Joke is my favorite band in the entire world, I have seen them live many times (14 at present, and hoping for more). I finally purchased this DVD and was initially skeptical about sitting on my couch and trying to get the same visceral feeling as being in the same room with them. I was impressed with every aspect of this DVD concert.
I started with Jaz's interview (couldn't get the bonus material to work!!) and then watched the show. The interview does a good job of setting the tone and supplying a context for this historical event without becoming self-indulgent (which Coleman usually resorts to in interviews). Jaz's passion for his work and his bandmates really shines through the 25-or so-minute interview. And he makes a good point - name another band that's still together after 25 years and enjoys the cameraderie that these guys do. Most bands have reunited for the money and can't stand each other (Pink Floyd, anyone?).
The concert is shot and recorded very well and I found myself enjoying a few cuts even more with the added visuals than I had on the audio version. In "Asteroid" for example, even though Geordie's incredible guitar blast gets lost in the mix (he has to tune down for that one) the enthusiasm of the crowd makes up for the loss in the video version. Jaz presents his mystic madman posturing amidst the sheer storm of the music - always an added dimension in a live setting. Even in the interview, the ravages on his voice have taken their toll over the years, and on a purely audio recording, Jaz can sound quite abrasive. The visuals add to the impact of his presence.
As far as overall audio quality, the recording is superb, and the bass which is usually buried in the mix on their lp's thumps and growls nicely on here. Geordie is almost inaudible on the opening cut, but it's sorted out soon afterward, and we get to bask in the shards of metallic beauty that make Killing Joke what it is at it's heart. His new Framis amp setup gives the guitar sound an added shimmer, but without as much bite as the Marshalls he's used for the past 10 years or so.
I have to mention 'Benny Boy', KJ's new drummer, who even receives accolades from Jaz in the interview segment. He has the 'busy-ness' of Atkins with the light rolling touch of Ferguson, and really works it hard on here. I can tell why the band is so smitten with this lad.
By the time the concert was reaching an end, I had that heart-pounding revelatory feeling I always get from a live Killing Joke experience, so it really translated well. Recommended for old and new fans alike.
Necessary.......2006-01-15
Seeing as this is the 25th year for the band, and this is their only "official" DVD, this is a "must buy" for fans. Killing Joke won't be around forever, and really do make a sonic impact in a live setting that you cannot get from any recorded medium. So, in, say, 10 years time this will have to do as the closest you cancome to a real Killing Joke experience.
As for the song selection: Of course I have some different choices. I'm sure you do, as well. But There's not one song on here that I dislike, and I bet you like most of the songs on here, if you are a fan already. If you know nothing of Killing Joke, I really doubt you are readig this. But, be that as it may, if you're a fan of Heavy rock (be it Metal, Punk, or whatever) you'll find something to like in this collection.
As for the interview:
I usually dismiss about a third of what Jaz says. I don't mean any disrespect to the man, it's just a different opinion from me. What remains is pretty amusing and revealing. I wouldn't buy the DVD for the interview, but it's not a bad thing to have.
What more is needed? How about the rest of the concert, and maybe some more "behind the scenes", or maybe, even a history on the band?
But, even those few things aside, I think this is necessary for Fans of Killing Joke.

Old timers have still something to say.......2007-06-11
Kenny Delmar's voice from the Fred Allen show comes alive on the screen. If you're over 60 you may enjoy the nostalgic re-connection with a "character" from the history of radio comedy shows. If not over 60, and below 30 maybe it'll do you good to step out of the electronic "cell" you're surrounded by and see what the old days were like.
THey weren't perfect, all of who are from 60-70 and above know that. But they were fun, no political correctness was known then, perhaps that's too bad but the foibles of both halves are poked fun at in a way that would do the Klan a lot of good to take to heart.
Foghorn Leghorn personified.......2004-06-26
The character Kenny Delmar plays in this movie--Senator Clanghorn--was one he initially created for radio audiences. More notably, it's the character on which Warner Brothers (and Mel Blanc) later based the cartoon rooster Foghorn Leghorn. Always a Foghorn fan, I was interested in the origin of the character, and bought a VHS version of the movie some years ago. It sports an engaging (if contrived) plot, designed as a vehicle for allowing Delmar to bring his blustery, conniving character to the screen.

"He used to sing? Yes.......2005-12-01
We all did, don't you remember?"
Director Jaromil Jires' 1969 black and white film, "The Joke" is adapted from the book of the same name by Czech author Milan Kundera. The film is at once an excellent adaptation of the book and also a fine example of the type of work done by the New Wave of Czech film makers during the golden years (more like months I suppose) that made up the Prague Spring.
The film, set in 1969 is the story of the seduction of Helena a middle-aged Czech reporter by Ludvik a similarly middle-aged scientist. The seduction is planned by Ludvik not as an act of love or passion but as an act of revenge. A series of flashbacks, seen through Ludvik's eyes, to the early 1950s explains the motive. Like many of his college colleagues, in 1949 or thereabouts Ludvik was a devoted follower of the new Communist regime. As he notes, in those days everyone sang and to be joyful was a duty. Ludvik and his college friends played folk music and traveled throughout the republic to spread the joy of the new regime. Ludvik's life comes undone when he plays a little joke on his then girlfriend. One summer day, Ludvik receives a postcard in which his girl friend tells him how optimistic she is about the future. Frustrated by her reluctance to accept his arduous embrace he pens a rather silly joke in response: "Optimism is the opium of the people! The healthy atmosphere stinks! Long live Trotsky!"
His colleagues and fellow young-party leaders did not quite see the humor in the sentiment expressed in the postcard. Ludvik finds himself expelled from the party and college and drafted to that part of the Czech military where alleged subversives form work brigades and spend the next few years working in mines. Despite the interruption in his career Ludvik has become a successful scientist. But despite his success, his treatment at the hands of his former friends has left him bitter and angry. An opportunity arises when he meets Helena, a reporter assigned to interview him. He finds out she is married to Pavel, the friend who led the efforts to purge Ludvik from the party. Ludvik decides to seduce Helena as a means of exacting his revenge on Pavel. In essence this is the second `joke' of the novel. The seduction is successful but it does not quite work out the way Ludvik thought it would. A lifetime spent waiting for revenge blows up in his face.
The film's construction differs from the book in many respects while at the same time remaining faithful to the story. Two particular differences are worth mentioning. The book was narrated through the voices of the four main protagonists. The movie does not attempt to do this. Rather, the movie is viewed only through Ludvik's eyes. In fact, in the flashback scenes we do not see Ludvik at all. Rather, the scene is filmed as if through Ludvik's eyes so the viewers see the event from Ludvik's perspective. Each contemporary scene in the film runs with flashbacks that put the current scene in context. I think this device worked very well. The second is the use of folk music throughout the film. Czech folk music played an important back story in the novel. However, it is the nature of the medium that we can only read about the music. In the film, we hear the music and see the musicians and that adds a great deal to the film.
A word about the subtitles. They are not good at all. They are filled with the type of errors that you might find if you run English text through an internet translator. You sometimes get meaningless sentence formations. Everything was understandable in context. "Good lucis" is easily understood as good luck. But it was something of a distraction,
The Joke is a good film. I think it is best seen after reading the book but it is worth watching for its own sake even if you haven't read the book.
L. Fleisig
The prize for an injustice can be a terrible boomerang! .......2004-11-30
This cult movie is based on a novel of Milan Kundera (The Unbearable lightness of being) . This ironic was filmed during the Prague Spring of 1968. A young man , a clear metaphor of the intelligent resistance to the Status Quo, writes a postcard with a humorous reference to Trostky and this is a wrong choice because of that crime according the stupid Cerberus criterion . He is sentenced to years of hard labor , but upon his release reminding us a reincarnated Count he takes revenge by seducing the wife of the Communist Party official who turned him in . As you suppose the film and the book was banned in Czechoslovakia. It could not be of another way .
Nevertheless at the end of the film you will celebrate this personal trick and also will remind the clever statement: the revenge is a dish you eat extremely cold!
Minor Czech New Wave.......2003-11-04
The Czeck New Wave produced some classics: Loves of a Blonde, Firemens Ball, Shop on Main Street, Closely Watched Trains. But this is just a minor classic. While the black and white cinematography is really something the film just doesn't rise to the level of those other films mentioned. Its close though. Based on a Milan Kundera novel the story takes place in Czechoslavakia in the 1950's when many students were caught up in the communist propaganda that looked innocent enough if you didn't look too deeply. From a distance it looks like one long springtime celebration of youth and purity and optimism. However this is just the surface truth for while these celebrations are going on others are being rounded up and denounced and sentenced to long prison terms for their "crimes". One student who refuses to get caught up in all the hype writes a letter to his girlfriend in which he states, "optimism is the opium of the masses." For this one line his girlfriend turns him in and his friends denounce him. He is sentenced to 6 years of hard labor as a result. During the trial he claims he wrote the line merely as a joke and thus the title of the film. We view these events in flashback after the "criminal" has been released and has returned to his home town. As he walks the streets and runs into old acquaintances he can barely contain an urge to strike out against all those smiling faces that once condemned him. Finally he does strike out. The stark black and white cinematography captures the utter alienation and contempt that this character feels. There is not a shred of sentimentality in this film. The effect is that it makes each thing seem matter of fact; this guys fate--the fact that he spent his youth in a work camp-- just seems utterly inconsequential to everyone. The tragedy is that not only was his youth stolen from him but that the social hypocrisy perpetuated by the communist regime has ruined his faith in life. When you think back about the film you remember the main characters sardonic smile and the one little joke that changed everything for him and became the defining moment of his life. The films abrupt and ironic ending may seem to leave you wondering if the film makers just ran out film or what. But actually the ending seems appropriate--everything about this guys life has been absurd and so the ending has to be equally absurd.
Why hasn't anyone seen this?.......2003-07-15
Get a hold of this movie if you can. Jires was a great director and artist who never quite got the recognition he deserved outside of his home country of Czechoslovakia, unlike his peers Menzel and Forman; this is mostly due to the fact that he stayed in the country and was stifled by the harsh Soviet rulers. It's great that Facets has made this available and I hope that Jires' next film, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders gets a release on dvd also.
This film is stylish, witty, and sad all at the same time.

So so.......2007-01-03
The manufacture quality was not up to commercial grade and the material did not really help me. If you can't tell a joke to save yourself then this would be a great purchase. If you want to improve your already average or better joke telling skills then I don't know that you will get much from this.
It was not awful and it was not great.

Product Description
Losers of the Year is a short film that archives the lives of 8 young men who all share something in common - the love of one woman. A few years ago a famous adult filmstar named Dixie Mountains set up what was to be known as the Worlds' Largest Sexual Gangbang in recorded history. Men traveled from all corners of the world to participate in this historical event. This fake documentary is a clever way to show the "inner-thinking" of the types of men who regularly perform in such spectacles. Sure, anyone will say they "would" participate, but it seems that very few would actually step up to the plate and put their skills to the test if faced with the option to do so.

Customer Reviews:
Funny Funny Funny.......2004-08-29
I saw this movie at a film festival a few years ago and am happy to see that it's now available on DVD. I had my doubts about a comical Jesus movie. But this really made me laugh! It's both smart and funny.
