With delicate charm and dignity, The Playboys finds laughter, love, and scandal in a cozy Irish village in 1957. For her disapproving neighbors, it's bad enough that Tara Maguire (Robin Wright, with a fair Irish accent) won't identify the father of her baby, and she's making matters worse by inviting romance with Tom (Aidan Quinn), a carefree actor in a band of traveling players. Constable Hagerty (Albert Finney) is insanely jealous and possessive; he knows Tara's secret while hiding one of his own, and his roiling emotions lead to a climax with dangerous shades of Othello. OscarĀ®-nominated screenwriter Shane Connaughton (My Left Foot) maintains the gravity of this situation (including a subplot involving IRA smugglers), but never loses track of his character-based humor, especially in the good-natured clash between free spirits and dowdy conservative locals. Filmed in the idyllic Redhills Village of County Cavan, The Playboys is well-acted (especially by Finney) and refreshingly free of blarney. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars One of 1992's best films.......2007-02-26

I know 1992 was a long time ago so I'll remind you of the film's nominated for the best picture Oscar that year: "Unforgiven", Clint Eastwood's cowboy movie with a modern edge that won the award, and competitors "The Crying Game", "A Few Good Men", "Howards End" and "Scent of a Woman". This film, "The Playboys", is better than all those films, in my opinion.

A story about secrets, love, fidelity, irony and small town life, "The Playboys" features a stunning performance by Alber Finney and likely the best film work of Aidan Quinn's career as they compete for unwed-but-pregnant Robin Wright, a young woman in a small Irish town that won't disclose the father of her child circa 1957.

While the film is not completely convincing in its representation of the 1950s (who knows what rural Ireland was like then?) it nonetheless remains an involving drama about people, circumstances, personal honor and what is important in life. Shane Connaughton's script plays the competition between the two men -- the standup cop Finney, representing good and irony, against actor-playboy Quinn, representing free spirits --against the overall conservatism and situational condemnation of village residents. The result is good fun and enticing cinema verite.

Filmed in Ireland, "The Playboys" is a wonderful movie that avoids nonsense and sentimentality, ends realistically, and asks the viewer what happenend when it's all over. It is a story on a lesser scale than some of the year's Oscar contenders; yet it stands up to all of them in terms of intelligence, viewer involvement, acting, onsite filming and the fulfilling the vision of its screenwriter. It's a film and story you won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars The Playboys.......2006-04-19

Set in a rural Irish village near the border with Northern Ireland, a young woman (Robin Wright) has a baby, but refuses to say who the father is. The town constable (Albert Finney) and another local landowner vie for her hand in marriage, but she refuses them both. Meanwhile, a troupe of traveling actors (The Playboys) comes to town to do nightly tent shows, and one of the actors (Aiden Quinn) falls in love with Wright, too. She sees him as an escape to Dublin - and maybe (only maybe) falls in love with him, too - and at the end of the movie is seen leaving town with him.

The script is fairly complex (a subplot involving smuggling supplies to the IRA is also part of the proceedings), with a lot going on with the complicated relationships. Wright is seen as the strongest of the characters - fending for herself, knowing what she wants; the males are depicted as being weak: either blindly and hopelessly in love (Finney's desperation is wonderfully portrayed) or simply a means to an end for Wright. The acting is excellent throughout, and the storyline and direction are subtle and interesting. Worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars A little gem from Ireland!.......2005-09-02

The sense of inscrutable and unexplainable foreboding surrounds and permeates this beauty and slow paced film. The Irish villages in the 1950s are the immense frame in which the story will elapse. A freethinking mother, astonishing played by Robin Wright (to my mind her best role to date) will be rescued by Aidan Quinn.
The sensation of bewilderment displayed by Albert Finney is other highlight of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars delightful! Aidan & Robin are the picture of joyfull love........2004-03-04

I enjoyed this so much that I bought the video to watch over and over. Unfortunately, I lent it out once too often & did not get it back the last time. I am glad to see it is out on DVD & will order right away.

5 out of 5 stars very moving story, with parallels to Othello.......2001-06-13

This is a wonderful film, with terrific performances, especially from Albert Finney who nearly steals the movie with his portrayal of a on the wagon alcoholic cop who finally loses it when rejected by a young woman he got pregnant and humiliates himself.

This is a well made DVD. Archival footage is a nice bonus. Great sound and great memories.

    4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-03-26

Being a Fan of Gary Lewis and the Playboys from way back in the 60s, this concert really took me back in time. Although Gary's voice has changed with age, (who's hasn't?)it's still great to see and hear him perform the old songs he and his group made popular. I've only seen him in concert once, and this brought back that night of enjoyment.
I highly recommend this DVD, if just for nostalgia sake. It's definitely on top of my list.

4 out of 5 stars Gary Lewis a favorite from the beginning.......2005-10-31

I'd always loved Gary Lewis and the Playboys songs from way back when. This video brought everything up to date for me. Though he doesn't sound like his records (understandably), it was still satisfying to see him on stage doing his songs the best way he knew how. The interview takes during the performance were also a nice touch. The behind the scenes info, especially how he got into the business and how songs came about, made the purchase worthwhile. As was mentioned, at the end credits, there's a complete clip of Jerry Lewis with his Dad, Danny, singing "Sonny Boy" together. In the separate Gary Lewis interview portion of the DVD, they show a part from the same program with Gary and his Dad performing the same song in the same way. There's also more clips of Gary as a youngster, including a part he did in his Dad's 1959 movie, Rockabye Baby, where he plays his Dad's character as a youngster and singing (I was never aware of that before). Then there's the part where he talks about taking up the drums at the age of 5, and how a friend of his Dad's showed him a thing or two.

No Gary Lewis fan should be without this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Give it a B+.......2005-07-19

Over-all, nicely done. Video quality is very good. Sound is OK, one simply must remember watching any act from this era in present day isn't going to live up to the original recordings. Gary hadn't reached 20 years of age when he had already recorded his seven top ten hits. He'll be 60 in July '06, yet his voice has held up quite well, i.e. He does an excellent job singing "Count Me In". No, he doesn't sound like he's 20 anymore, but still he holds his own. Song selection is what you'd expect, however, it is curious he performs a couple songs that were not hits while omitting songs that did make the Top 40 '66-'68. The most notable flaw for me was "Everybody Loves A Clown". What set that song apart was the use of a harpsichord as the lead instrument in the original recording. The keyboard player does an admirable job trying to replicate that sound but obviously it falls short and the song suffers because of it.
Throughout the video Lewis provides insightful commentary which is well done, although it would have been good if he'd spent a least a couple moments discussing the original band members (kind of a where are they now). Perhaps the nicest touch of all comes at the end of the video which has clips of Gary performing with his father. Very well done.
Basically, if you are a Gary Lewis fan, this DVD is a must have, considering, where else are you going to find this sort of thing?

Not the girl next door. The women are exotic dancers or something who are not very attractive. In most segments they are posing for a photographer while being filmed by a video cameraman. A few segments are audition videos in which they awkwardly talk about themselves. Editor doesn't even match the color when they jump between the two video cameras.

These women have no chance of getting in Playboy. This should not be under the Playboy name.

Featuring Jimmy Durante, Ann Miller (On the Town), and such classics like "We Never Dream the Same Dream Twice" and the title song, this musical was Gene's biggest theatrical production upon its release and remains one of his best- remembered big screen journeys!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Autry Musical.......2002-01-01

This movie was a classic western musical. It had the talents of lovely Ann Miller, famous dancer, the fabulous comedy of Jimmy Durante and Gabby Hayes and of course the sweet voice of young Mary Lee. Gene, a radio star, returns to his home town of Torpedo as honorary sheriff for a day and winds up running for a permanent place as sheriff. The bad guys were ruling the town and Gene had to stop them. This was classed as a musical because of the many songs and dance routines, but it was also a classical Autry action movie as only he could make..If you have never been an Autry Fan or seen any of his movies this is the one to start with....Strangly enough, this is the very one that made this Autry collector fall in love with the life and legacy of Gene Autry and I have been collecting since that time....I highly recommend this movie!!!Give it a try and you'll become a fan of America Greatest Singing Cowboy!!

    4 out of 5 stars Melody ( and comedy ) ranch.......2001-12-15

Gene Autry was a recording artist, a radio performer, and a business man, and in his films he played Gene Autry, a recording artist,a radio performer----etc. This strategy, plus his singing, helped to make him the No.1 Singing cowboy and it's all there in this film. The movie also shows that he knew the value of a good supporting cast, in this case including Ann Miller, who became a major star in Musicals, comedian Shnozzle Durante,
and Gabby Hayes. Players of this calibre, plus Gene's delivery of several songs, guarantees an entertaining 84 minutes.Of course I really like it because (a)I first saw it in 1942,(b) I always liked his singing, and it takes me back....

    4 out of 5 stars Playboy's Casting Calls 4.......2004-10-09

We all know there is no such thing as universally good - not in videos nor anything else. Therefore I am not surprized that there are naysayers as to this video series. On the other hand, I am no novice when it comes to girlwatching and/or girl-video-watching, and I, for one, was quite pleasantly surprized at the content. I don't care much for Playboy's videos. They seem to be able to use every technique in the book to make beautiful women into kitsch. I liked #4 so much that I went ahead and ordered all five of the series. Saying that the models, or at least most of them, were not Playmate material is not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of them were pretty hot, most were natural, and most lacked the vapid glossing-over that distinguishes many a Playmate. The scenes were a little closer to "natural" as well, or at least, they were absent the goofy props and perphernalia.
Not only that, they were not nearly as Bowdlerized as the typical Playboy flick. Don't expect any triple X, but at least they aren't shy about displaying the female genitalia. On the con side is that there were no extras; well, except a quick preview of the next video of the series. Probably best to start with # one and work your way through. Enjoy.

Oscar®-nominated screenwriter Shane Connaughton (My Left Foot) maintains the gravity of this situation (including a subplot involving IRA smugglers), but never loses track of his character-based humor, especially in the good-natured clash between free spirits and dowdy conservative locals.
