A May-December romance turns metaphysical in P.S., from the director of the critically acclaimed Roger Dodger. Louise (Laura Linney, You Can Count On Me, Kinsey) has a warm friendship with her ex-husband and a satisfying position as an admissions officer for Columbia University, but she's never gotten over losing her first love from high school. When a young man with the same name, face, and artistic talents (Topher Grace, Traffic) as her lost love suddenly arrives for an admissions interview, Louise tumbles into an abrupt and questionable relationship. P.S. is at its best when it follows the tics and foibles of human behavior; Linney and Grace both give vivid, lively performances. But every time reincarnation rears its head, the movie flounders, particularly in clumsy scenes with Louise's predatory best friend (Marcia Gay Harden, Mystic River), who stole Louise's boy so long ago. Fortunately (or strangely), that element is almost a tacked-on subplot; center stage is the romance between Linney and Grace, which glows sweetly. Also featuring Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, Miller's Crossing) and a woefully underused Paul Rudd (The Shape of Things, Clueless). --Bret Fetzer

This is yet another great season from the makers of Magnum PI. It is a great addition to my collection. You really need to purchase it to see for yourself.

Every show has its ups and downs...and Magnum's downs are a lot higher than the ups of most shows...

5 out of 5 stars Best TV Show ever.......2007-05-17

Easily the best tv show ever, every episode is a delight.
I dont mind if some dont like it, but some of the reviews of this by so called fans are nothing short of insane....maybe these people cant recognise quality...let them go and watch Big Brother and find their IQ level there.

Great series, great main actors, great characters...everything is just right...cant wait to get every season on dvd...considering the 8th season is so short...why cant we have season 7 and 8 in one package?!

2 out of 5 stars Not Magnum at its finest hour, but necessary for the collection.......2007-05-15

Beginning with Season Five, the writers of Magnum P.I. began to tinker with the shows format. Something not out of the ordinary when a show reaches beyond the four season mark. While most of season five's episodes work with this new formula, season six tries to continue with this formula, but instead misses the boat more times than not. Gone are the days of Magnum swimming on the beach or hanging out at the club to meet a client. Higgins no longer bargains with Magnum for guest house privlidges, and their customary banter only happens occassionally. This was done perhaps, the emphasize the fact that Magnum was getting older, and several episodes stress the fact that he may soon want to do something else with his life. Even though Magnum is quick to point out how great Hawaii is, one can get the impression at times that he's searching for something with a little more meaning.

Overall, the tone of the season is darker and much more serious. Come to think of it, most episodes of season six are shot entirely out of Hawaii (Deja Vu, Going Home), and several episodes go by where you see no trace of the guest house or estate for that matter. Episodes like the previous two mentioned and "The Way of the Stalking Horse," are some of the year's bright spots. I give the writer's credit for trying to branch out, but Magnum's sharp decline in ratings at this time(Number 8 in 1984 to out of the top 30 by 1985) was an indication that viewers preffered the old formula, and that the show was running out of steam. All is well however, because season seven and eight revert back (for the most part) to the show's old formula. Although I have not seen all of these episodes, the one's I have (Missing Melody, Laura, Little Girl Who) are, in my opinion, some of the best of the series.

1 out of 5 stars colossally, gratingly idiotic.......2007-05-15

For the first couple of seasons, Magnum P.I. was fresh and original.

But round about the second year, things started getting lame. Really lame. Having a private eye who drives a Ferrari and lives in Hawaii was a great setup, but honestly, the writers had pretty much done what could be done after about twenty episodes. After that, they had simply nowhere credible to go with the idea.

By the time we arrive at the fourth and fifth seasons, the writers were so completely out of ideas that every episode was jumping the shark. Nearly every outing was of the same worn ilk: one of Magnum (or Higgins's) long-lost but beloved acquaintances, whom we've never seen before, shows up out of nowhere; is in some sort of trouble, being followed, or wrongly implicated in some skullduggery. In the end, we are invariably relieved to discover that Magnum's "gut" was never off, and he always gets his man.

Over and over and over again.

And by the sixth season? You get to the point where you'd rather have molten lead poured into your nostrils than watch another minute.

I admit I liked the series when I was a kid, but it's just plain torture watching it now.

P.S. I am delighted that everybody hates this review!

A ratings hit for eight seasons on CBS, the action-mystery series Magnum, P.I. makes its DVD boxed set debut in an impressive five-disc package that offers not only the entire first season, but some rarely seen episodes. Positioned in the old Hawaii Five-O time slot (Thursdays at 9) in December of 1980, Magnum quickly became a hit, thanks to the combination of smart and witty scripting, gorgeous locations, and the considerable charm of lead Tom Selleck as former Naval Intelligence officer Thomas Magnum, who gives up his position to become a private investigator on Oahu with the help of fellow Vietnam vets T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti). Magnum also provided security for the lavish estate of wealthy (and never-seen) mystery writer Robin Masters, which gave him access to the author's expensive vehicles (including a prized Ferrari), much to the disapproval of Masters's manservant Higgins (Jonathan Hillerman).

A rare series that skillfully blended action, humor, drama, and suspense, Magnum, P.I.'s first season gets the boxed set treatment its fans have been hoping for, with all 18 first-season episodes (including the two-part pilot, "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii") included on four discs. The fifth disc contains four rarely shown bonus episodes, including season 3's "Ki'ls Don't Lie," which featured a crossover plot with Simon and Simon, as well as its conclusion ("Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend"), which kicked off S&S's second season; the latter episode has never been aired as part of Magnum's syndicated package, which is another reason for fans to pick up and enjoy this long-awaited set. --Paul Gaita

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete First Season.......2007-06-28

Being Magnum fans I purchased the first four seasons as an Anniversary gift for my husband. We are really enjoying the DVD's.

We had them for a few days when a storm caused us to lose power off and on for 3 days...thankfully I had 3 of my four hour batteries charged for our compact DVD player. We spent 4 hours the first night of the storms watching Magnum. We had forgotten that the theme music had been changed, kind of strange at first.

We have been very happy with the quality of the DVD's so far and are anxiously awaiting for season 7 and 8 to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a great series!.......2007-04-21

I really forgot how good some of those first season early episodes were until I bought the season 1 DVD. "Skin Deep" is probably the most entertaining episode of the series. Other standouts are "China Doll" and "J "Digger" Doyle". What I enjoyed most was the 1982 crossover episode as the featuring Gerald McRaney and Jamison Parker from Simon and Simon from season 2. Also the Simon episode "Emeralds are a girls best friend" and although not as big a fan of later seasons, the 2 part season 5 opener w/ a young unknown Sharon Stone playing a psycho...big surprise there. I found it neat with the discoesque theme song for the first 10 episodes too. You could see how the 4 main characters found their niche as the season progressed.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for a "guy show".......2007-03-11

I never really watched this show on tv originally because it did not appeal to me. I bought the 1st season for my husband and wound up watching it with him. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I would recommend this to women even if you are not a Tom Selleck fan. The character development makes this show so it's good to start out at season 1 and you'll appreciate it more. Each episode plays on Magnum and his friends and there are always interesting guest stars who everyone will probably recognize. Give this P.I. show a try.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-02-21

This season was sent to replace my original set. I was happy with the service that Amazon gave me to replace the original set. It was sent in a timely fashion and it is greatly appreciated. I really enjoy the series.

How many movies offer the rare spectacle of a parasailing pink starfish flying over a crowd with a congratulatory pennant clenched between his buttcheeks? And that's only the tip of the iceberg--The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a freewheeling goof of a cartoon, full of surreal twists as its diminutive heroes head down a dangerous road to rescue the lost crown of King Neptune. SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny), an arrested adolescent in the mold of Pee-wee Herman, works at a fast-food restaurant that serves something called Krabby Patties (as the restaurant owner is himself a crab, it's not clear what exactly they're made of). His best friend Patrick Starfish (Bill Fagerbakke) lives under a rock and has an IQ in the lower digits. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot as they strive for manliness. Anyone seeking a coherent world will be disappointed; in this undersea adventure, things catch on fire or seem to be surrounded by air whenever it's convenient for a gag. The jokes are often more silly than actually funny, but there's an undeniably energetic joviality to the proceedings. Featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and a fully fleshed appearance by David Hasselhoff. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

In THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE SpongeBob SquarePants takes leave from the town of Bikini Bottom to track down King Neptune's stolen crown. Why? Because when the main suspect turns out to be Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob stands by his boss and vows to find the real culprit, even after just being passed over for the promotion of his dreams. SpongeBob and Patrick travel for the first time on land to retrieve the crown and clear Mr. Krabs' name.

5 out of 5 stars This is my homework movie.......2007-06-25

I've seen this countless time, opening night in theaters and own it for when I'm doing homework. The humor as Spongebob seems to be is more adult and 80's in this film then it ever has been in the TV show. Including a hair metal dance sequence. When I saw it in the theater the kids giggles at their heroes and smiled, but the poor parent dragged to bad kid movie after bad kid movie were laughing, jokes about David Hasselhoff, and a nut bar. It s a film knowing that the people seeing it are stoners and people not looking for the next Disney celebrity voiced Oscar fest but a film to space out at and simple enjoy. And out of the countless bad Nick cartoons made into movies this has to be one of the best, beating out Rugrats, Hey Arnold and Doug by a mile. And lets not get started on the last piece that's come out of Disney in the last 10 year. So on that note it worth to see if you know its not going to be GOOD then its going to be fun at least, and simply enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars Enjoyment of the series is no guarantee you'll enjoy the movie........2007-06-21

I'm an adult and a member of the "Spongebob Underground": adults who enjoy the cartoons but are afraid to say that to other adults. So, I'm a big fan and I've seen most all the cartoon episodes. I think Spongebob was the first great cartoon of the 21st century.

But the movie just doesn't work. It's like they had enough material for a typical 11 minute cartoon and they tried to spread it over an almost-hour-and-a-half movie. It was strained humor, tedious to watch, and mostly mindless slapstick stuff for little kids. The part that the parents enjoy, that the kids don't get, just wasn't there (except for the NPR joke that I thought was hilarious). But one great joke does not a movie make.

5 out of 5 stars One of our favorites!.......2007-05-19

Mom, Dad, 12yr old son and 4yr old daughter agree, this is one seriously funny movie. All you Goofy-Goobers out there must buy a copy.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-13

I really enjoyed this movie. When I first heard that they were making a Spongebob movie, I didn't want to see it as I imagined that it would just be a really long episode and I couldn't see how they could make the fun last for the length of time a movie lasts. But the story is well thought out and the fun does last the whole movie. I particularly love Spongebob consoling himself with ice cream sundaes when he doesn't get promoted, he and Patrick get a little out of control. The movie really was fun and I can watch it again and again and still laugh. Well worth the effort.

    3 out of 5 stars Defective CD's.......2007-07-02

I love this series and finally ordered all 5 seasons. I have spent the last 2 weeks watching them in Quantum Leap Bliss. The show itself is wonderful; however, I had problems with the manufacturing of the DVD's themselves. Each season had at least one disk with problems (i.e. missing bonus features, episodes that won't play in the "play all" mode, but will if you access it from the "episode index," episodes where the show gets hung up, then starts, then gets hung up, then starts, and on and on, and episodes that won't play at all (black screen), etc. I have just done the "exchange" process through Amazon and re-watched all 5 seasons. The 5th season disk 3 had the same problems (episode 18 and 21 won't play properly, they skip and drag, and even kick out to the menu).

I tried to do another exchange for Season 5 through Amazon, and they said "As it seems that the problem with this item "Quantum Leap - The Complete Fifth Season " is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement. We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed." Which means, I will not have Season 5.

    5 out of 5 stars Best season.......2007-05-08

I was a huge fan of this show when it was on TV. I thought I'd start collecting the seasons and started with season 5. I didn't realize that a lot of my favorite episodes were in this season. The "Trilogy" arc was one of the reasons I started watching the show regularly and the "Evil Leaper" arc really added to the show. I definitely recommend this season!

5 out of 5 stars Quantum Leap The Complete Fifth Season.......2007-04-03

I LOVE Quantum Leap!!! Love Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, they are terrific. I DON'T like how Donald Belasarius ended the series! I would love to see a Quantum Leap movie and end it the way all Leap fans want it to end! With Dr. Samuel Beckett being able to leap home at will! I now have my entire Quantum Leap collection completed! YEA!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Quantum Leap.......2007-03-25

This has always been one of my most favorite shows, and I now get to enjoy it with my nine year old daughter, who LOVES it! Scott & Dean have the best chemistry! Every show was fun and entertaining. I wish it was still on the air.

4 out of 5 stars Needs extras and scene selections.......2007-03-10

The stories are as good as ever, but they really rushed this one out. It has almost no extras and even lacks scene selections. They could have waited a bit longer and done a better job with this set.

4 out of 5 stars Sellick carries this season through thick and thin.......2007-05-12

Magnum is a show that follows the "star + ensemble" formula that has always been a mainstay of the action movie and TV industries. Nowhere does the formula been more successfully used, especially in the later seasons of Magnum. Stories are often set up through the backgrounds of the supporting characters. But it's still up to the star, in this case Tom Sellick, to carry the bulk of the load. Luckily Sellick is up to the challenge, and I think this season relies on Sellick more than any previous season to keep the show interesting and entertaining. Whenever the plot gets a little silly - and that happens in every season of Magnum - Sellick's down-to-earth and lovable portrayal of Magnum makes the show a joy to watch.

So what happens in this season? The most important plot points are the return of "Mac" (reincarnated as a charming con man), the development of Carol, the district attorny, and the increasing use of Icepick, Rick's godfather-like underworld connection. Few, if any, of the episodes are among the best of the series, but there are lots of good shows here to make the purchase price worthwhile. "Mac's Back" is the most obvious must-have episode of the season. Unlike others, I find the 2-part premier of the season to be overly melodramatic and possibly the worst shows of the season. The other 2-parter, featuring a rescue mission to a Cambodian jungle village, makes good use of its time and even brings Higgins back into his military acoutrements.

Many fans feel the show decreased in quality over the last few seasons. I am of the opinion that the show continued to get better - mostly due to the richness of the back stories and the quality of the supporting cast. Season 5 may not be the best season, but it's still a lot of fun to watch. Although there are no extras on this DVD edition, at least this season finally puts to rest the technical problems that plagued the releases of earlier seasons: for the first time, there was not a single show marred by segments unreadable by my DVD player.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum P.I. - The complete fifth season.......2007-03-14

If you are a Tom Selleck fan, this is for you!! I like the action and antics that Thomas and his buddies get into in each episode. I also love that this is set in Hawaii. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun. It's like taking a mini vacation with each episode.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-18

We own all the seasons of Magnum PI. While the content of this season is very good, the DVD quality is poor.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of shows decline.......2007-01-17

As a huge Magnum PI fan only 2nd to Simon and Simon, season 5 was the beginning of the shows decline through some outlandish subject matter through some of the episodes. There's always been political elements to the show, but they seemed to stretch one's imagination beyond realism. Season 2 through season 4 are the 3 "must owns" if you were to only have 3. The shows subject matter was at its peak and was fresh during those seasons. The Vietnam era ended right around the time I was born so being under 40, I tended to enjoy the episodes most like season 2's football episode featuring Dick Butkus, Season 3's episode with Rick and AJ Simon along with Morgan Fairchild, as well as season 4's with Magnum meeting Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

Return to the Big Island for more adventure with Tom Selleck's charmingly roguish detective hero, Thomas Magnum, courtesy of this three-disc set, which compiles the entire second season (1981-1982) of Magnum, P.I.. The 22 episodes included here (among them the two-part "Memories Are Forever") crystallize the key to the series' success: an appealing blend of action, drama, mystery, and comedy, cemented by Selleck and his likable castmates, especially John Hillerman, who would earn a Golden Globe for his work on Magnum in '82. Highlights of the season include Magnum's attempt to stop an international assassin ("The Jororo Kill," with Tyne Daly), the arrival of Hemingway-esque author Mad Buck Gibson (Darren McGavin) in the episode of the same name, and the aforementioned two-parter, which reunites Magnum with a woman he thought to have died after marrying her while serving in Vietnam. The usual array of classy guest stars are also on hand for this season; in addition to the aforementioned actors, there are turns by Mimi Rogers, Vic Morrow, Vera Miles, Jill St. John, and Elisha Cook Jr. (who plays a much different character than his recurring role as "Ice Pick" in future seasons). And Magnum obsessives should note early appearances by Gillian Dobb, who played Agatha Chumley in numerous subsequent episodes, as well as one of Higgins's colorful, estranged half-brothers in "The Elmo Ziller Story." It's unfortunate that the set itself doesn't match the quality of the Episodes--extras are limited to second-season episodes from Knight Rider and The A-Team--but Magnum fans should be pleased to have all the episodes in a single set, and best of all, commercial-free. --Paul Gaita

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete Second Season.......2007-06-28

3 out of 5 stars Magnum hits its stride.......2006-03-04

The first season of Magnum was plagued by poor production values, poor acting by the extras (and often the guest stars too), and a "sameness" that made watching episodes close together (as happens when you have a DVD) a little dull. With the second season, all these issues are alleviated to a great degree (although not entirely eliminated), and the show becomes more fun to watch.

It's not that the average episode is written much better - that will have to wait for later seasons, although the last disc in Season two is solid from top to bottom. No, it's that the characters are now in full form and the stories are richer for the interplay between the 4 main characters (Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick). In fact, the extended universe starts to finally take the form it would keep for the rest of the series, with first appearances by Michelle (Magnum's wife), Agatha (if not the character, at least the actress), and the first of Higgin's legendary half-brothers (Elmo Ziller, from Texas, which allowed us to finally hear John Hillerman's real accent!). Similarly, the shows "feel" more like Magnum, leaving some episodes with bittersweet conclusions, and others without real conclusions at all - like the episode "Mad Buck Gibson" where we never learn if Mad Buck survives his last death-defying stunt. Why not? Well, it wasn't the point of the show, and the show ends just as it should, with Mad Buck appealing to Magnum mano-a-mano and talking him into allowing him to try hang-gliding to Maui.

Unfortunately, I had to deduct a star for the quality of the DVD set. Like all 2-sided DVD's, it's difficult to keep both faces clean, so there were issues with episodes seizing up, or the menu not initialising, etc. Similarly, the presence of the intrusive and extremely annoying Universal fanfare at the beginning of every single episode - luckily the first chapter break occurs right after the theme, but it's still annoying to have to skip ahead every time (Columbo Season 2 has the same thing - what were the Universal execs thinking?!). Finally, there are no extras, except a couple episodes from other shows (A-Team and Knight Rider), although these episodes do set off how well Magnum has aged relative to other pop-dramas made at the time.

1 out of 5 stars Greatest Show Ever,...DVD is JUNK.......2006-01-17

Another reviewer, Mick Black from Cleveland had it right. The video skipped and stopped cold on a few episodes. I carefully cleaned the disks, and the same thing happened. It's a shame one of the great shows off all time is not given it's proper respect by Universal. I didn't expect a lot of "extras," just the original episodes with no frills or technical problems. No such luck.

    5 out of 5 stars Season 3, at last!.......2005-10-21

My wife and I have loved revisiting this series (great entertainment, great scenery...what more could you want?) and have just gotten word that the 3rd season will finally be released January 31st. Happy new year to all "Magnum" fans!

    4 out of 5 stars Season 3 please!.......2005-08-29

To be honest I only purchased series 2 to tide me over till series 3 is released.("Did you see the sunrise?") Series 2 is fun , glossy and expensive looking, but it is in series 3 where they finally hit their straps.

Peter Yates's flag-waving film stands with To Kill a Mockingbird and American Graffiti as one of the best films about small-town Americana. Steve Tesich won an Oscar for his semi-biographical screenplay about four 19-year-olds who don't know what to do after high school. Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) and his three friends--ex-football star Mike (Dennis Quaid), wily comedian Cyril (Daniel Stern), and tough kid Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley)--are doomed to live in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where the local kids (nicknamed "Cutters"--a derogatory reference to quarry workers and their blue-collar families) are looked down on by the uppity students of nearby Indiana University.

Stohler escapes into a world of Italian bicycling, picking up the lingo, the accent, and a good share of the talent of his heroes. He is also the scourge of his father's life. The used-car salesman (Paul Dooley) doesn't understand his son's affection for bicycling or, for that matter, his pride in being a "Cutter."

Breaking Away rehabilitates the word heartwarming as Tesich's uncommonly intelligent script gives us well-rounded characters and a potent sense of place. The grandstanding finale--the real life "Little 500" bike race--gives the film a perfect, crowd-pleasing end. However, the film never sacrifices the development of characters for the action. Dooley is especially effective in one of those once-in-a-lifetime roles. The lifelong character actor's place in film history is established with this indispensable performance. --Doug Thomas

    Description

This charming, Academy Award winner (1979, Screenplay) cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team-an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

    5 out of 5 stars Breaking Away.......2007-07-03

Peter Yates's heartfelt, life-affirming movie will prove a winner for older kids and adults. Christopher is appealingly quirky in the central role and the film showcases the budding talents of future stars Quaid and Stern as two of Dave's buddies. Paul Dooley is outstanding as Dave's bewildered father, a solid Middle American you might actually buy a used car from. Don't miss this one.

    5 out of 5 stars IU nostalgia.......2007-05-13

I attended IU and I very much enjoy watching this movie again and again. It was a well written screenplay and adapted well to a movie version.

5 out of 5 stars Buon giorno, Papa! .......2007-04-23

I just watched this movie for the first time in many years, and was just as captivated by it now as I was when I first saw it shortly after its release in theaters. Those who have grown up in small town America will find elements in the film that will take them back in time! I watched the film with my 12 year old, and both of us connected with the story, the characters, and the humor in it. This is indeed a real charmer of a film. I gotta have the DVD for my collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Breaking Away.......2007-03-28

We were so pleased to be able to purchase this movie as we could not find it anywhere else. It was in perfect condition in its original unopened wrapping and it came within three days.

5 out of 5 stars They can't make 'em like this anymore........2007-03-03

"Breaking Away" is a true rarity: a feel-good movie that doesn't that isn't silly. Yes, there are plenty of laughs in it, but they're the result of great acting and writing, not the cheap, crude one-liners that litter so many of today's so-called "comedies." And while the movie will tug at your heartstrings, it never spills over into gooey sentimentality or empty pathos.

But I also feel sort of sad whenever I watch "Breaking Away." The small-town downtown where the guys hang out is just a fading memory for most Americans. And are there any old swimming holes anymore, like the quarry that the characters visit? Or have they all been paved over, for "luxury" McMansion subdivisions?

Shut me up! Just watch "Breaking Away" and enjoy it!

    3 out of 5 stars I'm stumped. Is he?.......2007-05-06

Is it just my imagination or is there something really, really wrong with Magnum? There has to be. Here we see him getting in all these exotic adventures and, nearly always, landing a top-quality girl in the end.

Not just that, but the girls in question are invariably bright, seductive, and willing. Make no mistake: over the years, Thomas Magnum has bagged dozens and dozens of high-class babes! Rarely do we see him strike out.

    And yet, something is awry.

Come the next episode, the newly-won girl is nowhere to be seen. Magnum is once again free as a bird, with no prospects on the horizon. What's happening?

I can imagine if one or two of these women turned out to be total flakes: addicted to drugs, interested only in a one-night stand, besaddled with serious emotional problems, etc. But all of them?

I have a theory. Magnum, you see, despite his manly physique and swoon-inducing moustache, is possessed of private parts that are laughably diminutive. Or categorically non-functional.

This is the only thing that could explain how Magnum can never seem to hang on to a single girl, regardless of how taken with him the woman seemed at the end of the last episode.

I can see them now, storming indignantly out of the guest house, chuckling cruelly as they light a cigarette and hail a cab, refusing to waste another moment with our protesting hero, who stands wrapped in a bedsheet at the door, tears welling in his eyes.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum P.I. - The Complete Fourth Season.......2007-06-28

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy from Childhood, But Still Golden.......2007-03-20

How is it that Tom Selleck is still so appealing, despite the clunkiness of an 80s sitcom? It's a cheesy 80s sitcom. But Tom Selleck still makes it appealing.

As previous reviewers have said, 5 stars for the show, and 0 for the DVD's. 3 episodes in my set had serious problems. Thank God Season 5's discs are not double sided. Hopefully, they will be better.

Magnum continues to entertain many years after it stopped showing on TV. It was great to sit down and watch this timeless TV series again after so long. The amazing thing was how much the kids enjoyed the show.

By the fourth season the show was using a well proven entertainment formula of action and humour mixed with the fabulaous Hawain scenery! We also enjoy the guest appearances by many actors who later became even better known. It is great fun and good family entertainment.

    Product Description

Get ready to join Dr. Sam Beckett on the adventure of many lifetimes! Who will he be this time? Mafia hit man. Air Force test pilot. Professional boxer. Sam does it all in Season One of the groundbreaking, 5-time Emmy award-winning series.

Scott Bakula plays Sam Beckett, a time traveler who never knows whose body he is going to leap into next and at what moment in history he may find himself. Sam is joined by a helpful but easily distracted holographic guide, Al (Dean Stockwell) who assists him on his missions and aids Sam in his ultimate goal of returning to his own life in the present.

They'll be dancing (well, leaping maybe) in the streets now that the first season of Quantum Leap, voted one of the 25 best cult series ever by TV Guide, has come to home video, a decade after its final year (1994) on the air (the pilot episode was released on DVD in '98). And why shouldn't they? This is a show, called "an imaginative diversion" by one critic, with a good premise that's cleverly and skillfully conceived, written, acted, and produced--ample evidence of which is spread out over three discs, each containing three episodes (plus some fairly meager extras) from the first season.

Scott Bakula, in the role that made him a star, plays Sam Beckett, a scientist who's part of a time-travel experiment that "went a little... ka-ka." Unable to return to his own time, and aided only by Al (Dean Stockwell, whose rapport with Bakula is one of the series' most appealing elements), his cigar-smoking, peculiar-dressing, sex-obsessed, holographic "enabler," Sam "leaps" unpredictably from one time period and person to another, usually completely out of his element (as a pilot, a boxer, a cowboy, an English lit professor, even an elderly black man in segregated '50s Alabama) and always in a situation that needs to be "made right" before he can leap onward. Generous helpings of humor, drama, physical action, and sentimentality (this is TV, after all) keep things moving, as do references to many other classic films and genres (Driving Miss Daisy in "The Color of Truth," Casablanca in "Play it Again, Seymour," boxing in general in "The Right Hand of God") and what creator Donald Bellisario calls the occasional "kiss with history" (Sam crosses paths with the young Buddy Holly and Michael Jackson, among others). It doesn't all work, as Quantum Leap occasionally becomes too cute and facile for its own good. But that and the set's paucity of bonus material (limited to one passable featurette and brief episode intros by Bakula) are the only real shortcomings of a boxed set that will likely earn multiple spins in the DVD player. --Sam Graham

    5 out of 5 stars excitement, and intrigue...what a season.......2007-05-07

when I watched 'Quantum Leap' on the tv it was a great show. so owning the first season seemed like a good idea. I WAS NOT disappointed in the least. It delivers with a knockout punch and continues on. Sam Beckett and his faithful hologram buddy 'Al' have a working relationship unequalled in tv. they keep you guessing on every plot, and make you want to run back for more. Part of you keeps hoping Sam will get home, but part of you knows that then the show would be over, and so would the fun, not to mention all the great changes these two bring about in others lives through time and space.
this series is worth the time, and WELL worth the money. If you are a Scott Backula fan, which I am, you'll more than enjoy these dvd's in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Quantum Leap - The Complete First Season.......2007-03-17

This is a great sci-fi show, I enjoy watching it, and ad it to my collection.

    3 out of 5 stars Oh boy.......2007-02-27

You will find yourself repeating this phrase, an ad-lib by Scott Bakula that became the trademark of the show, a lot. It's already managed to worm its way into my everyday conversation, without me even realising.

I never really knew much Quantum Leap. I never watched it when it was originally on TV, but I was only 5 when it first appeared. I borrowed this from my boyfriend, to make a small difference to watching Friends & Lois & Clark constantly!

It did get off to a shaky start, with the pilot episode, I felt like there should still be a lot more explaining to do, but it's to keep you watching isn't it? Little snippets of information are revealed throughout the series, just to keep you watching, without revealing it all in the first series. It's a shockingly short first season, but had it been known that it would take off so well, then they probably would have made it to the more standard length of a TV season, around 20+ episodes.

Scott Bakula (Sam) & Dean Stockwell (Al) make a great comedy team, and bounce perfectly off each other. Al is the women obsessed, cigar smoking, weird dressing hologram, who walks through things and thinks everything else around him is a hologram. Sam is the man who's quite literally lost touch and forgotten about everything in his own time, and is now bouncing around in his lifetime, trying to get back to his own time and his own body. He's quite the goody two shoes to Al's leering over the women. There are many different people he leaps into, including a boxer, an English professor, a Humphrey Bogart lookalike, a black man in the 50s, and many others. What was my favourite? I'm not sure. I quite liked Sam leaping into the black man. It was interesting to see a period of time when everything was so segregated. Sam also manages to run into some stars of the future: in one of the earlier episodes, he runs into a young Buddy Holly, and influences him to change the name of a song he's improvising to "Peggy Sue"; he runs into Michael Jackson in a bathroom, and "shows" him how to moonwalk; and also in the last episode, he meets a young Woody Allen. The latter was a reference that went completely over my head, as did a lot in that episode. All the references to Humphrey Bogart and all the old detectives were lost on me.

Many TV series these days have the all too familiar guest stars, but Quantum Leap manages to steer away from this. That was always a problem with Friends, it's like lets recognise the famous face this episode. The only faces I managed to recognised were a very longhaired Teri Hatcher, Jason Priestley, and Joey's dad from Friends.

I'm not too sure how this show is going to last the five series it did, but my boyfriend does have them all on DVD, and I've already borrowed the second season, so we'll see how it pans out. He's refusing to reveal the ending, so I guess I'll have to keep watching, so I'm very curious. The show will ultimately always be about leaping about, but judging by the ending, Sam will leap into a woman, which will make it slightly different, and hopefully, the show will keep changing, just to keep it fresh and new.

I can't wait to see the next season! And even moreso if Scott keeps appearing topless as much as he did in this! What, was it written into his contract that he HAD to appear topless? If you've got it flaunt it. And he certainly did that.

3 out of 5 stars Falters somewhat, but interesting premise and Scott Bakula is FABULOUS.......2007-02-11

This review is for the show as a whole, all five seasons. Quantum Leap has a wonderful time travel premise, supported by terrific acting and the endearing main characters of Sam Beckett and his holographic friend Al. The different situations and eras each week that Sam leaps into, often hold the viewer's interest due to their diversity. The real compelling force here, however, is the multi-talented Scott Bakula. His range as a good athlete, tuneful singer, and arresting actor is potent enough to have given this show a 5 star rating.

The problem is, some of the more socially significant and moving themes (mostly related to racism, many to the Vietnam war, and some to sexism) are interspersed with silly, stupid, "throw-away" episodes. My bigger problem relates to the excessive violence in at least one-third of the episodes. I think the tension could have been sustained without all that blood and gore.

Season 5 really falls apart, both in the shoddiness of the presumed science and in the failure of the writers to tie up loose ends (probably because it wasn't clear whether or not the series would continue). The uneven plots, the illogical premises, and the gore all bring down the rating to 3 stars.

Nevertheless, this is a show worth watching, if for no other reason than Bakula's stunning acting.

5 out of 5 stars We love it!.......2007-01-03

Not only does it have the entire season, but it has these great interviews and behind the scenes stuff. It's a fun series.
