That was of couse the syndicated version, so there were several minutes missing from the episodes. I look forward to seeing the first season episodes with the restored scenes. Kevin Bacon gives one of the best, most nuanced performances of his career in The Woodsman, a daring and thought-provoking drama he co-produced with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick. In portraying a convicted pedophile named Walter, recently released from prison and struggling to rebuild his life, Bacon and writer-director Nicole Kassell (making her feature-film debut) do a remarkable job of exploring all facets of this troubling yet very human character, from his continuing criminal impulses to the despair he feels over having to conceal his horrible past. Sedgwick costars as the one woman who appears willing to accept Walter, secrets and all, and while The Woodsman takes a few regrettable shortcuts in illustrating Walter's quest for the good man he can be, the film deserves to be seen and discussed as a provocative yet admirably humane study of an individual whom society may too quickly label a "monster." The film allows for different interpretations, and that complexity--along with Bacon's performance--makes it worthy of a wide and hopefully understanding audience. --Jeff Shannon

    1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2007-04-05

I found this movie pointless, devoid of story, dull and sick. I couldn't feel for the poor sick, child molesting man. I couldn't like the woman for caring about him. And when the molester wanted the little girl to sit on his lap, I wanted to jump into the film. Please avoid this film. There is much better in the sea of movieland than this stinker.

The movie attempts to build sympathy for a child molester. One scene the molester is trying to entice a child, and the next the molester beats up another molester.

Regarding Kevin bacon's acting performance - the entire movie he remains quiet, looking depressed. That's it. Very few lines.

This film left me sick to my stomach and bored to tears.

4 out of 5 stars Kevin Bacon is such a good actor.......2007-03-13

This film really deserved better press and exposure than it got.
Kevin Bacon is just sensational in this film.

I really wish that all the deleted scenes would have been left in,I think
they tied up the film in more of a complete film.

It really is one of the top acting jobs of the season, yet was virtually
ignored. The soundtrack was very, very good also.
I don't think that Mos Def is an actor..how on earth does he get film roles??

Kevin and his wife were just so good and believable, and really looked good together in this film.
The close up filming of this film was so good in studying Kevin's face, the folks that made this film deserve alot of credit on that.

    5 out of 5 stars the past isn't over.......2007-01-25

Not until the final sentence or two of this film does The Woodsman reach anything like dramatic resolution, and even then it is a resolution of the sort befitting the deep complexity and ambiguity of its subject matter. The film begins when Walter is released from serving 12 years in prison for his conviction as a sex offender, and he tries to make a new life for himself. He takes an apartment across the street from an elementary school (yes, a bad choice), and rides the bus to his job at a lumber yard. Except for his therapist, all those outside of and around Walter ostracize him as a monster and a freak. His sister refuses to talk to him or allow him to see his niece, a detective monitors his every move, and when his work colleagues discover his past they "out" him in a most bizarre way. Within himself another war rages. Neither Walter nor the viewer really knows to what extent he has moved beyond his past and is, therefore, safe. Involuntary hallucinations plague him, and poor choices born of habit implicate him. Three important sub-plots, all revolving around child molestation, contribute to Walter's unfolding narrative. Watching this film I was reminded of Faulkner's unnerving observation that "the past isn't gone; it isn't even past." Still, and not to reveal too much, this incredibly tense and powerful film ends on a hopeful note that is nevertheless sobering for all of us who seek redemption this side of eternity.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-01-04

This movie is somebodies idea of what it would be like to be a person with this type of horrible past. It has no bearing on reality. Do not waste your money unless you have money to waste.

4 out of 5 stars excellent casting--an intensive character study.......2006-11-15

This is one of those small movies that comes out with a very intriguing cast. Most notable, of course, is Kevin Bacon, who has been showing us since _Murder in the First_ that he is quite a capable actor and is likely to show up just anywhere...and his appearance here does not quash that image at all. Kyra Sedgewick also stars, as well as Benjamin Bratt. But there are also other recognizable names--Eve, David Alan Grier and Mos Def--though these are a surprise for showing up in a film that is so serious and a little dark as well. They are also a surprise for how competent they are.

_The Woodsman_ focuses on Walter (Kevin Bacon), a released child molester out to move onward with his life. He gets a job at a lumber yard and quickly stirs interest in how withdrawn he is, how damaged. Kyra Sedgewick is a co-worker who develops an interest for Walter, maybe partly attracted to the fact that he is 'damaged goods.'

But of course, life on the outside isn't easy for Walter. Though he has a tight relationship with his brother-in-law (Benjamin Bratt), his sister and neice do not want to have any contact with him, and a detective (Mos Def) is keeping a close eye on every move he makes. Walter, of course, has his own struggles, for he knows how likely his type is to repeat offend, and in his thinking he had 'never harmed' any of his victims. Also, he lives across the street from an elementary school, so temptation presents itself regularly.

The film itself is a good study of the struggles of this character to move onward with his life, though there are plenty of incentives, both interior and exterior, to give up any impulse to change. Kevin Bacon is wonderfully reticent though not emotionless, presenting well a tortured soul still trying to determine what is right and wrong. In the course of this movie, we find out that many characters are damaged in many ways, making the issue of the film not an investigation of who is damaged, but how people sort out the damage in their own lives. Even Mos Def's character, who may seem a little belligerent and bordering on persecutorial at first, only wants to end pain in the world.

The ending of _The Woodsman_ is a little too well wrapped-up and feels a little easy, but the rest of the film is a thorough study of characters who feel very fleshed-out and actual. They don't always make the best decisions, but that is what makes them so sympathetic. Most of all, it is clear that the casting for this film was extraordinary, as well as the directing--the act of making a child molester a sympathetic character is challenging, and this film pulls this off well.

Does anyone know if this DVD box (or future volumes) will contain the SUSPENSE episode called THE ADVENTURE OF THE BLACK BARONET, in which Basil Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes for the final time? I'd like to see that ...

This horror anthology TV series was broadcast on "live" television, meaning it was never filmed. The episodes are preserved courtesy of a method known as "kinescope" so don't expect superb prints. No one has superb prints. But . . . the picture and sound quality is as good as it gets and thank goodness someone put them out. This is the first of three box sets containing the SUSPENESE TV series, and they have NEVER been available on VHS or DVD before. I do recommend you buy the book on SUSPENSE (also available on Amazon) as a companion piece and enjoy!

A pair of bikini-clad babes escape from a deep-space prison ship and crash-land on a remote jungle planet. They're greeted by a pair of bickering robots, two other stranded travelers, and a flamboyant hunter who's grown bored of wild animals and prefers to pick off his guests in nightly adventures. "You've got spirit. This will be fun," he says, smiling wickedly while sizing up his latest prey. While the film is never quite as campy as its title would suggest, this trashy remake of The Most Dangerous Game delivers on everything else: studio-bound jungle chases through mist-shrouded sets, B-movie starlets in skimpy outfits, medieval castles in the technologically advanced future, and the obligatory succession of topless scenes. Shakespeare this ain't, and frankly writer-director-producer Ken Dixon can't summon the barest hint of style to enliven the usual clichés, but the comic bluntness serves its purpose, and Dixon does deliver striking sets and a few slick special effects that belie his meager budget. Cindy Beal and Elizabeth Kaitan play the bodacious fugitives, and kittenish cult actress Brinke Stevens costars as a previously grounded babe in reserve. --Sean Axmaker

    3 out of 5 stars PUBERTY ROCK!.......2006-05-14

Guys who are hitting PUBERTY will love this movie!

    I watched it several times..

and it does have monsters and half naked women and crazy stuff like that!

4 out of 5 stars Totally Fabulous but it is a B-Movie!.......2006-01-02

Sometimes, when you watch something that is totally absurd, with awful acting, cheap sets and nudity for no apparent reason you end up really liking it! It's just so bad...that it's good. The low budegt b-movie can be entertaining, if nothing else, on a comical level and this is what should be expected from this Roger Corman classic. Believe it or not, this is one of his better films and is sure to deliver some laughs with the bad jokes and ridiculous plot but for under $10 you can't really complain!

    2 out of 5 stars *YAWN*.......2005-12-01

Two slave girls escape slavers to end up on a planet where they end up becoming the prey for a insane hunter. As somebody pointed out already, in one of the other reviews, it is silly. The females are cute, above advantage pretty, but not that impressive even when topless. The sci-fi parts of the story, such as the robots, space ships and zombies, are cool for a 1980's film (if it had been made for TV). I don't know what they were trying to make. The story is OK but nothing to dish out money for. The girls are good looking, as I have already pointed out, but they barely do anything to give the film a R rating. A mixture of many things.
It's nice but don't ask for too much. Get it used.

    2 out of 5 stars Silly.......2004-06-08

A title like "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" is sure to strike absolute terror into the hearts of even the most stalwart B movie fans. Here's a film that sounds like an offbeat 1950's atomic age UFO cheesefest, one of those obnoxiously cheap pictures featuring pie pans on strings bouncing against a poster of the sky as overweight stage hands wearing zipper showing costumes lurch and stumble around in the foreground. Well, before you can say "take me to your leader," let me tell you that "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" is not an offbeat 1950's atomic age UFO cheesefest featuring pie pans on strings bouncing against a poster of the sky as overweight stage hands wearing zipper showing costumes lurch and stumble around in the foreground. Nope, it's got nothing to do with the 1950s or atomic age UFO scares. Instead, it's an 80's version of "The Most Dangerous Game." In "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity," you see several scantily clad women with huge hair stumbling around a jungle as some guy hunts them down for sport. Sounds great, doesn't it? Not really. In fact, it's quite boring even for fans of this junk. The movie has such a high cheese level that I needed a cholesterol test after watching it.

Two prisoners, Daria (Elizabeth Kaitan) and Tisa (Cindy Beal), find themselves in quite a predicament. Locked away in a cage on a transport barge, the two must discover some way to escape before the overlords of the ship sell them into slavery. One of the girls figures out how to break their chains-must have studied physics in high school-and the two overpower their guards and escape in a smaller spaceship. Adrift in deep space, Daria and Tisa worry whether they will ever find a civilized planet on which to land. Just when the situation looks bleak, the ship picks up a signal from a nearby planet. The ship crash-lands on the planet and the two are briefly separated. They reunite at a medieval looking castle in the middle of a jungle owned by a man named Zed (Don Scribner). This guy, who has two robot helpers, already plays host for two other crash survivors-Shela (Brinke Stevens) and Rik (Carl Horner). Daria and Tisa soon learn that Zed is a little odd, that he likes to spend his time playing weird holographic musical instruments, hosting lavish dinners, and hunting. Especially hunting. Zed's huge basement is loaded with trophies celebrating his excursions into the jungle.

Our heroines soon discover that Zed likes to hunt humans instead of animals. He draws wayfarers to the planet only so he can turn them loose in the jungle and, using his robots as hounds, flush them into the open to finish them off. Daria and Tisa, along with Rik and Shela, will soon form the next contingent for a new hunting expedition. In the meantime, the girls discover what Zed is up to and attempt to escape. No good. Zed is determined to hunt, so after recapturing the cuties he cuts them loose with a few weapons and instructions about how to play the game. It's to the credit of our heroines that they aren't willing to just lie down and accept their fate. They truly fight to stay alive despite the traps, the slanted odds of the game, and the dangerous wildlife in the jungle. There's the noble sacrifice, the discovery of a strange alien structure, and the usual table turning moment. You can probably guess how this one ends. If not, you ought to. So many other films have ripped this idea off that you have definitely seen some version of the story at some point in your life.

I incorrectly labeled "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" as a B movie, and it is, but I should make a distinction between the special effects (certainly B budget) and the acting, dialogue, and pacing. The latter is pure Z grade schlock, with the characters tossing off brain deadening dialogue and one-liners even as they prance around in bikinis and lingerie. Where did they get these clothes, anyway? Zed lives in a huge castle with everything he could want. Couldn't he at least have the decency to find a pair of pants for these gals? Actually, the skimpy outfits make the film somewhat impressive. How much cooler is it for a couple of woman to stand up to two robots and a heavily armed man in a bikini than wearing shirts, pants, and shoes? Anyway, the pacing of the film positively drags even though the movie only runs for seventy some minutes. The acting, too, is the pits. It's a sad commentary on the state of cinema when you watch a movie like this one and recognize that the robots turned in the best performances. Still, discerning viewers can distill a few interesting things about the future by watching the movie. For example, at some point when spaceships exist, the fashion trends and hairstyles of the 1980's will make a comeback. I kept expecting that guy from A Flock of Seagulls to step out of the shadows like some bizarrely coiffed Rod Serling clone, telling us the movie an illusion.

Extras on the DVD version, if memory serves me correctly, consisted of several trailers for cheese classics like "The Creepozoids." I can't really recommend this film to anyone. It's too corny for science fiction fans, too non-horror for the horror crowd, and too foolhardy for lovers of tongue in cheek comedy. Even viewers looking for girls walking around in next to nothing might be disappointed. The image of beauty has obviously changed quite a bit between 1987 and now. These girls will probably do nothing to raise the pulse of today's young male audiences. Give it a shot if you just have to see it. Others, stay light years away.

3 out of 5 stars Average Buxom Slave Warrior in Outer Space Camp Fare.......2004-03-11

This is nothing more than 'The Most Dangerous Game' meets the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on the set of 'Space 1999'. I expected high camp value out of a film with a title like this, and there is a degree of campiness present, but overall it is bland. The 'outer space' dialogue is often hilarious, and the acting itself is wooden and unsubtle, just like you would expect.

This is almost literally an exact remake of 'The Most Dangerous Game', with a few added mutants and bickering androids for good measure. There is actually not much nudity, and what little bit there is not what you would call titillating. This should have been a more upbeat, fun camp classic, but it tried to be too many things. Notably the director attempts to make it genuinely scary and suspenseful during the hunting scenes, but given the silly nature of the material they are working with, the end product never seems to quite click as a movie.

I have seen funny and campy sci-fi, which I like, and I have seen scary sci-fi, which I also like. Unfortunately this movie presses a little too hard to be both, and it comes up a bit short in the end.

There is nothing wrong with your DVD player: the creative minds behind the 1995-2002 version of The Outer Limits offer you six volumes of imaginative science fiction culled from the series to entertain and astound you. Viewers should know that this boxed set does not compile the complete series, but rather it takes 36 episodes from the show's full run and groups them by theme; also, two of the six volumes have been previously released as single discs (Time Travel and Infinity and Sex and Science Fiction were released in '02),but Aliens Among Us, Mutation and Transformation, Fantastic Androids and Robots, and Death and Beyond are brand new (and are also available as single discs). But that shouldn't stop both first-time travelers to The Outer Limits and veteran explorers from picking up this set, because it contains some of the program's most intriguing episodes, including the Emmy- and Gemini-winning "A Stitch in Time" with Amanda Plummer; "I, Robot," a remake of an original Outer Limits episode, and starring Leonard Nimoy; "The Grell," with Star Trek: The Next Generation's Marina Sirtis; "Double Helix," with Ron Rifkin and Ryan Reynolds in an unorthodox exploration of genetics; and "Beyond the Veil," with Michael O'Keefe in a story about alien abduction. Each disc offers "Origins of The Outer Limits," a talking-heads interview with the show's creators, as well as featurettes on the making of the episodes compiled on each disc (the Sex and Sci-Fi and Aliens Among Us discs offer slight variations on this format by offering a multi-part featurette and a documentary on a single episode, respectively). --Paul Gaita

    1 out of 5 stars B O R I N G.......2007-06-27

This pack is a bargin vs. purchasing each theme individually.
Six episodes to each 'themed' dvd. There are only a few outstanding episodes. You will get bored watching same themed episode after episode.
Wait for each season to be released.

    2 out of 5 stars Cop-chop issue.......2007-06-13

I think making theme chop-chop's is an unintelligent way of issuing a series. It must be the works of a marketing manager having no clue about quality.

I haven't seen the series but is very intrigued and want to buy it. But when I buy something I want to get the complete works. Not a minced leftover by some surely ignorant editor (annoying those with a different taste). Any series issue ought to start chronological and be complete. If the studio wants to serve the low quality market segment, then by all means chop it up - afterwards. Please have a little self-respect, dear friends at the studio !!:o)

4 out of 5 stars Great Series However.......2006-09-05

I love this series; ok it's not the original, however some of the plots and themes are as good as the original. Some of the plots are very predictable and formulaic, I can forgive this, its Sci-Fi and sometimes going along for the ride is part of the fun.

What I have trouble forgiving is the way the set is packaged-the themes idea sucks-I want to be able to have it broken up so that I watch one about aliens and then maybe a time travel and a twisted robot one. Why are they not packaged like they were screened? It seems bizarre to me and some of my favourites are missing altogether-the one with Charlton Heston as a judge on time travel etc, no idea of the name- and the double sided discs are a bit of a minor pain, err which side is which again?

All up its great Sci-Fi, some of it is tried and predictable, some of it thought provoking, some just a blast, enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Outer Limits - The New Series (2005).......2006-02-24

The Outer Limits - The New Series (2005) remind me The Twilight Zone, its not exactly thad, but it come close.one of the disadvantage thad there noe subtitles, but its a very
impressive DVD collection, i love the division according to topic.hope yoe like it too. have fun (-:

    5 out of 5 stars Opinion.......2006-02-17

For all serious Science Ficition fans, The Outer Limits is in my opinion absolutely necessary to own.

This particular DVD set contains remakes of some of the classic episodes of the orignal series, notably two of the most memorable classics I Robot and The Inheritors.

Most of the episodes are thought provoking and contain sometimes obvious and sometimes non-obvious observations on modern life.

All in all, I would certainly recommend The New Series for those who consider themselves Science Fiction aficionados or for those who are fascinated by the Sci-Fi genre.

The consequences of time travel are the thematic framework for this compilation of episodes from the revamped Outer Limits anthology series, produced for the Showtime network. The six stories compiled here are indicative of the new version's competent but uneventful nature; scripting, performances, and direction (all hampered by the program's low budget) rarely live up to the plots' potential or the drama and suspense of the original series. Amanda Plummer's Emmy-winning turn as a scientist who travels 50 years into the past to commit a murder in the Season Two episode "A Stitch in Time" is the highlight of the disc; the rest (culled from the series' seven-season run) offer well-worn variations on time travel themes. The full-frame disc includes "The Outer Limits Story," which offers talking-head interviews with executive producers Pen Densham and Mark Stern, as well as featurettes on each episode. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Good show. .......2006-10-17

Like some other reviewers, I've always been fascinated by the concept of time travel. That's perhaps the first reason this series appealed to me.

The there was, of course, that it IS "The Outer Limits," the best use of Sci Fi as a story/mythtelling means I've ever come across.

This has a lot of elements you'd like in a story, a certain degree of sentiment, history, in short, humanity.

Indeed, the spouse and I enjoyed "Gettysburg" after we returned from another weekend in Gettysburg.

      I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars time travel at its best.......2006-02-17

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent sci-fi.......2005-11-17

Excellent sci-fi. I am a fan of "time travel" plots, and these were some of the best I've seen anywhere. There are six episodes on the disk, and I would give at least 4-stars to each of them except "Time to Time". That got a little preachy on the politically correct values but still had a good ending. I would highly recommend these episodes to anyone who enjoys a good time travel flick.

      3 out of 5 stars A decent movie about a great man.......2006-09-24

I had the opportunity to have met Feynman when I was an undergrad at Caltech. We actually had him as a dinner guest when I was there (this is back in the late 70s/early 80s, which is long after the time period covered by this movie). He really was very personable, he loved talking to students. He actually taught a class at caltech after-hours on lockpicking (his dad was a locksmith). He was someone who you really wanted to get to know. I agree with the previous reviewer that this movie does not accurately portray him. Still, the movie was entertaining, which is why I give it 3 stars.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly a love story, very little Feynman.......2005-10-17

To truly appreciate this film one must first read some of Feynman's works. The film speeds through events as if they all took place at the same time, when it's clearly noted that said events took place at different times. In addition the film is primarily based on his relationship with his first wife, and doesn't really go into the mind of Feynman, or show his true genius, and creativity. In addition the film does not portray Feynman properly; it makes him appear as if he's a secluded genius, when in actuality he was very normal.

One will appreciate some of the various quotes, and events that you'll immediately note from his lectures, and various books. If you haven't read his works, then you will not be able to appreciate this, which I believe is the only positive this film has.
