A thriller that's nearly devoid of thrills? That's not a complaint--it's what makes The American Friend one of the most stylish (and, at the time, most expensive) films to emerge from the New German Cinema of the 1970s. Loosely adapting Patricia Highsmith's mystery novel Ripley's Game, director Wim Wenders shifted priority from plotting to character, emphasizing a richly colorful and atmospheric approach to locations in Hamburg, where a picture-framer (Bruno Ganz) is lured into an assassination scheme involving a mysterious Frenchman (Gerard Blain) and the titular American friend, Tom Ripley (played by Dennis Hopper, a far cry from Matt Damon's portrayal of the same character in The Talented Mr. Ripley). The plotting is vague to the point of irrelevance; Wenders prefers to maintain the aura of mystery, as opposed to generating any conventional suspense, and expresses his affection for American movies by casting favorite directors Nicholas Ray and Samuel Fuller in pivotal supporting roles. The result is an intoxicating example of cinematic cross-pollination. --Jeff Shannon

Scott Bairstow takes over for Ethan Hawke in this spirited (if clichéd) sequel involving a peaceful Haida Indian tribe and a con man in preacher's garb (Alfred Molina, just oozing evil) in 1906 Alaska. Bairstow discovers his inner wolf as he bonds with the tribe and falls in love with the chief's spirited daughter (Charmaine Craig), White Fang finds true love in a snow-white female wolf, and together they take on the dastardly villains who have stopped the caribou and imprisoned the hunters of the tribe. Less Jack London than a juvenile Dances with Wolves, this clunky but action-packed cliffhanger combines old-fashioned matinee Western clichés with Native American spiritualism and a celebration of nature. Though it's hardly subtle, the energetic action scenes and the beauty of the Alaskan summer make this an engaging adventure for the younger set. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Adventure..........................2003-03-03

In this movie Jack has gone back to San Francisco and his friend Henry is mining his claim and caring for White Fang.
This story is mixed with Native American spiritualality and mysticism. They are in need of the white wolf (White Fang, or is it Henry?) to lead them to the caribou they are in need of to prevent starvation among their people.
This sequel is very entertaining with beautiful scenery.
A great family film.

3 out of 5 stars Disney made this up........2003-01-23

I've read White fang and there is no mention of Myth of a White Wolf. Disney had to have a sequel, so they made up this story.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie.......2002-07-06

I have watched this movie a number of times and still find the story to be interesting. The simplicity and predictability of this movie makes it a great movie for younger elementary children, but there is enough plot and action to keep the family entertained. I enjoy the Alaskan setting and the images of the Haida village. There is a love story woven in with the young hero's role of finding the caribou and saving the village, but neither plot goes into anything overly sentimental or complicated.

I have used this movie in a fourth grade classroom to have them identify the main characters, the setting, the problem(plot), and the solution: things that are found in any good story, be it written or in a movie. They enjoyed the movie and it worked well for the assignment. This is a great family movie because it contains these basic story elements and does it well, making it watchable again and again.

5 out of 5 stars White Wolf.......2001-03-08

All I can say is that this was a brillent movie. I'm glad i saw the 2nd White Fang first. The first one was a big turn off to me. The story is about a young man who is having some dificultly understanding the native americans beliefs. With the Help of White fang a a native american girl Henry begins to understand thier ways, but he is soon to discover that the native Americans life is in danger and only he and white fang can save them.

Put Charles Grodin together with a 200-pound Saint Bernard and you're likely to come up with some good laughs. In this popular family comedy from 1992 Grodin plays a beleaguered dad who reluctantly lets his kids keep the lost puppy they've adopted. The dog quickly grows into the huge and clever hound named Beethoven. In a marked departure from his nice-guy roles in several Disney comedies from the 1960s and '70s, Dean Jones plays the villainous veterinarian who abducts Beethoven to be a subject in his sadistic animal experiments. The kidnapping sets the stage for a raucous rescue and, of course, an inevitable sequel. Innocuous but harmlessly entertaining, Beethoven is one of those movies that some kids can't get enough of. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Movie For All Ages.......2007-01-18

This movie is fun for viewers of all ages. There are a couple of questionable scenes, but I would not have a problem with children watching this movie with me. (I noted in other reviews that I believe parents should always watch movies or TV programs with their children.)

I'm used to Dean Jones as the hero of countless Disney live action films. Here, he plays the villain, and does a chilling job with it.

I would highly recommend this comedy, especially if you want something for the whole family.

4 out of 5 stars I Love It.......2006-07-09

I used to watch "Beethoven" when I was was young, and I was watching it today. We have this and "Beethoven's 2nd" on video, but I agree that "Beethoven" may not be for younger children but I really, really love it.

1 out of 5 stars NOT a family film.......2006-01-29

I found nothing to like about this movie and I can't believe people actually take children to watch it. The father is an absolute jerk and I wanted to smack the mother, who stands like an imbecile while her husband says ugly things to the dog and kids. The filmmakers attempt to redeem him and show what a loving father he is by beating someone up! Riiiighhttt. Throw in a sadistic veterinarian and you have a horror show, not a family film. This is completely unfit for children and should be for adults as well.

5 out of 5 stars love this movie!!!!.......2005-10-10

ok i have ALOT of movies that i love heck i don't really hate anything that much (except hulk and the star trek movies they're wierd). but actually that's suprising though and there's some movies inbetween loving and hating sortof but this movie is very funny especcially the part where beethoven drags the buissness people allover town oops sorry for that but i'm sure by now everyone has seen this though. :)

4 out of 5 stars Good Boy!- Good Movie!.......2005-04-18

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and now even as an adult I see all the magic that made me enjoy it when I was younger. After watching this movie even the person in your family who is not an animal lover will want to go out and adopt a St.Bernard!

It starts when Beethoven is just a puppy by narrowingly escaping a pet store robbery Beethoven wanders the streets until he enters the lives of the Newton family. After Emily Newton the youngest member of the clan awakes in the morning to see a cute little fluffy St. Bernard puppy in her bed "I dreamt I had a puppy and my dream came true." George and Alice Newton are besides themselves on what to do with the dog- they can't keep it is George's first reaction. It will ruin the yard, destroy the house, it will grow to be enormous, and then it will die and we'll have to replace it and start the whole process all over again. Well George despite, being an a non-dog person decides to keep it for the sake of the kids "It's just temporary" he says. But, soon Beethoven the lovable St.Bernard becomes a member of the family- dealing with all childhood crisises from bullies and to first crushes- as this happens he also gets REALLLY big creating huge messes that George Newton reluctantly puts up with! Well, Beethoven is a very special dog with a remarkable love for his family sensing danger for the Newtons from saving George from the finical ruin of his company to the near death drowning of little Emily. But, suddenly Beethoven finds himself in the grips of an villianious vet who wants to use him to test out a new gun anumition on- only problem is the Newton family isn't going to give Beethoven up with out a fight! Even George loves the creature now.

This movie made my eleven year old host sister roll over on the floor with laughter. And seeing it made me want to go out and adopt a St.Bernard puppy. Charles Gordin is HILLAROUS as the anti-dog loving George in this movie his facial expressions and tone of voice reminded me of my dad's dealings with our family pet. Charles Gordin totally carries this movie. The animals also make this flick really endearing-

All in all this is a movie to rent or buy to watch with your kids over and over again! The perfect choice for family movie night.

In a quirk of film history, this new version of the 1972 classic is directed by Kevin Hooks--who played the central role of the sharecropper's son in the original. That's a nice full circle, although it leaves unanswered a basic question: why bother remaking a movie that got it right the first time? The story is simplicity: a black family in the Depression suffers when the father is arrested for stealing a ham. The punishment? Five years, hard labor. Sounder has an under-rehearsed, rushed quality common to low-budget TV pictures, although Carl Lumbly brings a powerful presence to the role of the father. (That's Paul Winfield, the star of the original, as the teacher who befriends the son.) The shortcomings may not matter much to the young audiences Disney targets, as they'll probably be too busy rooting for the return of the dog that gives the movie its name. --Robert Horton

Description

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the ORIGINAL - as is for most things in LIFE.......2003-12-05

There is something authentic about the original that this new version lacks. I remember being a child in school watching the Cicely Tyson & Paul Winfield classic, and I'm just being honest, but nothing beats the original. If you're going to watch the modern remake, do yourself the favor and enjoy the classic too! It's one-of-a-kind :)

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind.......2007-05-14

I was thrilled and surprized at the ending. I never guessed the ending. Wow what great mystery and love story all in one.

5 out of 5 stars Worth your time.......2007-04-10

This was an excellent movie and kept my interest from beginning to end. That is after I had seen it on TV, which is why I knew I had to have it for my collection. The characters were real and the story line enthralling. Mia and Adam both turned in outstanding performances in their roles. Everyone may not appreciate the twist, but I certainly did, and so have my friends who have viewed it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-04-05

I feel in love with this movie the first time that I saw it. I loved it from beginning to end. There is spirituality, mystery, and OMG LOVE, great plot/story line, and most of all Native American culture. I loved this so much that I recommended this to all of my family and friends.

1 out of 5 stars New Age to the core!.......2007-03-06

The story line is good (although extremely slow at times), but definitely has a new age message to promote. From Angela's soliloguy in her school play that she is in everything and everything is in her to her conversation with John's father who tells her John learned about the Catholic religion because "Jesus was a good teacher and I felt like he could learn something from Him". He also goes on to say that although John learned about Catholicism, he practiced his own religion. I've watched and enjoyed other movies that are about similar subjects (Somewhere in Time; Two Lives of Jennie Logan; Hallmark's The Love Letter), but this was a blatant affront to Christianity by bringing Jesus into it at all. Jesus was not just a good teacher and the line was completely unnecessary in the movie unless they were trying to promote their new age religion.

The R rating is also well deserved - there are two episodes of explicit teenage sex and crude discussions about it later on. So, buyers, beware - there's an agenda in this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy chick flick.......2007-03-06

I like the acting and the two characters do have chemistry but there just is not much plot or character development.
SPOILER

When you go from Mia's character leaving town to becoming a star, the transition is so fast that it just is not believable.
And quite frankly, the movie is dull and is a waste of Adam Beach.
Mia, while I do think she can act to an extent, seems to be typecaste now. (If you've seen her on the L word- another self destructive character)
Overall, a decent sob movie but a waste of good actors and could have been done better.

5 out of 5 stars A posthumous homage!.......2006-02-15

When Nicholas Ray ` s creative spark was vanishing and the winter dreams arrived at the end of the road, Wenders inquired him to make the last documental-interview around his thoughts, points of view and other subjects in NYC .

Ray was dying of cancer but far to behave himself as a Romantic figure, Ray makes what a man must do: accept the death `s call and not to give up.

I still remember a smart statement of Bette Davis : "To get old is not for the weak people." And the undeniable talent of this German filmmaker this bold and painful testimonial will endure the sudden reverses of the forgetfulness and the fragile collective memory.

"The glory is the sun of dead" Balzac.

A thriller that's nearly devoid of thrills? That's not a complaint--it's what makes The American Friend one of the most stylish (and, at the time, most expensive) films to emerge from the New German Cinema of the 1970s. 4 out of 5 stars Dark Thriller and Character Study from New German Cinema........2006-12-09

"The American Friend" was the first cinematic adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel "Ripley's Game", the third book in her Ripley series, written for the screen and directed by Wim Wenders. The film can be viewed simply as neo-noir or as an allegory of the American economic conquest of Europe, which was held in distaste by many authors of New German Cinema. It imparts an unmistakable sense of time -the 1970s- and of its artistic philosophy, but Wenders blurs the distinctions between Hamburg, Paris, and New York by focusing on their industrialism. "The American Friend" may be more interesting as political cinema than as a thriller, but it is also more dated. Wenders wittily cast seven directors to play his villains, starting with Dennis Hopper as sociopath Tom Ripley.

Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper) is an American dealer in counterfeit artwork living in Hamburg, West Germany. His fateful introduction to art restorer Jonathan Zimmerman (Bruno Ganz) at an auction for a forged painting sets a bizarre series of events in motion. Raoul Minot (Gerard Blain), an associate of Ripley's, asks Ripley to settle an old debt by killing a man for him. Ripley is reluctant to do the job himself, so he suggests Zimmerman, who is suffering from a serious blood disease. Minot promises Jonathan 250,000 deutschmarks to kill a man in the Paris subway, insisting that Jonathan has little time to live anyway, and this would allow him to leave his family well cared-for. Jonathan is shocked by the proposition but somehow seduced by it into a violent and chaotic world.

"Ripley's Game" retained its name in a second movie adaptation in 2002 that aspired only to be a psychological thriller. "The American Friend" is more successful than "Ripley's Game", but the two films have completely different narrative focus. "The American Friend" tends toward character study. It's about Jonathan, portrayed by the superb and meticulous Bruno Ganz as a regular guy whose introversion conceals a morbid angst. Why does Jonathan want to believe that he is dying? Why does he trust a murderous stranger with obvious ulterior motives? Why does he willingly plunge his life into chaos and terror? Those are the questions at the heart of "The American Friend". The later film "Ripley's Game" marginalized the wiling victim in favor of the more forceful and colorful characters of Tom Ripley and his nefarious acquaintance.

In "Ripley's Game", Tom Ripley is an outright sophisticate, played seductively by John Malkovich. Tom Ripley of "The American Friend" vacillates strangely and inexplicably between sophisticate and coarse, ugly American. Where "Ripley's Game" has sharp, articulate dialogue, "The American Friend" has improvisation and eccentric behavior. Though some of his antics are undoubtedly intended as metaphor, Ripley's character is incoherent, making him the weak link in this film. But "The American Friend" is much stronger film noir than "Ripley's Game", in spite of its freestyle dialogue, because Jonathan Zimmerman is a true noir protagonist, and his plight is this film's focus. In English and German with English subtitles.

The DVD (Anchor Bay 2003): There are 36 minutes of deleted scenes with optional commentary by Wim Wenders, a theatrical trailer (3 min), and text bios with selective filmographies for Wim Wenders, Bruno Ganz, and Dennis Hopper. There is a feature commentary by writer/director Wim Wenders and actor Dennis Hopper. Wenders talks about actors, lighting, the cinematography of Robby Muller, locations, some technical details, and the film's reception. Hopper comments on Wender's directing style, and both men recall the spontaneity of the performances and rewrites. They do not discuss characters, story, or themes. I had trouble accessing the audio commentary. After selecting the commentary, I could only get it to play with the film by going to the scene selection menu and starting at scene 2. I may have a defective disc, but if you have trouble, try using the scene selection menu.

4 out of 5 stars Far From Friendly!.......2006-07-16

THE AMERICAN FRIEND is a clever film, but one that perhaps suffers from a being a little too smart for its own good. As an exploration of the cultural colonisation of Germany it is very effective, and WIM WENDERS fills the subtext of his film with a pessimistic tone that borders on paranoia, a redolent theme for a film of the 1970's. He depicts a featureless and grey Europe that is bending under the unbearable yolk of capitalism. A continent that has had its originality squeezed out of it by the duplicitous behaviour of people like Tom Ripley. A land of commerce and greed, rather than art. In fact art becomes the metaphorical device for the insidiousness of a consumer driven society, with both painting and the cinema acting as its agents. Of all European countries to feel the pinch of forced doctrines by the USA, Germany in the wake of WW2 is perhaps the most notable. A generation of film-makers grew up with an ambivalent attitude towards Hollywood. They were respectful of its efficiency, but resentful of its corrupt value system and sought to implement their own brand of national cinema. THE AMERICAN FRIEND and to a lesser degree Werner Herzog's STROSZEK are the most indicative examples of these complex tensions. Viewed today the film also becomes an intricate and enjoyable parody of film noir and the values that genre embodied. It's post-modern credentials are worn as a badge, in both Wenders choices of colour, and especially in the casting. As a deconstruction of both Hollywood's influence and the effects of forced capitalism THE AMERICAN FRIEND works tremendously well. Unfortunately the sophistication of its satirical elements, wring a great deal of the life out of the film, especially in terms of excitement and spectacle.

4 out of 5 stars Hopper and Ganz Shine In Ripleys Game.......2006-02-24

I saw this movie when it was first released on VHS years ago. The reason I rented it was because I was in a big Dennis Hopper phase and trying to watch just about everything he had done. This was during the time of him cleaning up and his resurgence with Blue Velvet and directing Colors. I must say that the movies I watched usually broke down into two categories. The first was the early Hopper portraying the weakling son of the bad man. The other was the very messed up and drug addicted Hopper which had its highlights as he rambled to a great performance in Apocalypse Now but most were really bad movies that were hard to watch. All that said, I must say that Wim Wenders adaptation of Ripleys Game 'American Friend' was a huge suprise and ended up being one of my all time favorites. It also introduced me to the great actor Bruno Ganz. But in this movie Hopper is his equal and they both turn in fascinating performances. Of course this movie was out before The Talented Mr. Ripley with Jude Law and Matt Damon. Since I had never read the books I had nothing to go on. Wim Wenders direction is great and the story is interesting and just keeps you focused. Ganz is great as the German frame maker who owns a little shop and who meets the strange, complex and brilliant shady Tom Ripley (Hopper). Hopper is involved in the criminal underworld. One of his enterprises is the selling of fake art. He tricks Ganz into doing some 'wet work' for his criminal friends by getting him involved in a murder for hire plot because they spin a scheme that has him believe that his physical condition (a blood disease that is controlled)is much worse and that he only has a limited time to live. In time manipulation morphs into a kind of friendship between the two.

I won't go any further because I don't want to spoil the story for anybody who wants to watch. This is a good foreign film but refreshingly is easy to follow and has quite a bit of English dialogue. I believe a good bit of the movie takes place in both Germany and in France (haven't seen it in a long time).

One last funny story about this movie. A girl I was dating rented The Talented Mr. Ripley when it first came out. I watched it and liked it very much. I told the story of a young Tom Ripley and it was excellent. A few years later I picked up another copy of American Friend and viewed it. As I was watching I caught Hoppers characters name, Tom Ripley. I immediately realized that the big hit movie of the day 'The Talented Mr. Ripley's' or at least its main character had been done years before in a brilliant Wim Wenders adaptation 'American Friend'. So I did a google search and found this is an adaptation of the novel 'Ripleys Game'. I guess this movie has been remade recently with John Malkovich as Ripley in the feature film Ripleys Game. Also I understand that the Ripley character has also been done by Alain Delon in one of the earliest adaptions of Ripley.

5 out of 5 stars Wim Wenders wraps yet another present that your sure to LOVE........2005-09-28

Perfect. A thriller that deserves to be called a thriller. A story that deserves to be called a story and acting that deserves to be called acting. An all around masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ripley Tale On Film.......2005-04-05

This classic arthouse cult film with it's rare american/german duo, brilliantly played by Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz, is simply the best Tom Ripley tale (translated to film) out there.
The American Friend moves quickly into a documentary type of mood with now and then a touch of black humor.

The violence is cold and chilling and serves as a crucial back up in the believability of the story and characters, with credit for director Wim Wenders who never lost grip. As those specific scenes could have easily break The American Friend into pieces if it was too theatrical or not in harmony with the mood that was set.

3 out of 5 stars Exciting, but misleading.......2003-05-10

I love movies on sled dogs, especially those that are a little "different" ( there are some magical type things in the movie I won't give away ). Beautiful dogs and scenery, good character portrayal of a well meaning but troubled teenager, but I think it gives a really inaccurate portrayal of Mushing and most Musher's attitudes in general. I should know, as I was a musher for five years, until illness forced me to stop. Anyway, there are things in this movie that seen to be taken verbatim from George Attla's famous book "Training and Racing Sled dogs". Not to put down Mr. Attla, who overcame major obstacles in his life including a crippling disease, but Mr. Attla is a Native American who came from a culture that out of harsh necessity ( lack of food, severe conditions ) has a very different attitude toward dogs than most of us are used to. I won't go into detail, but people living in isolated Native villages in which deprivation is still a fact of life are often harder on dogs than Mushers from "Outside". I've seen this attitude myself. These people are not cruel people, they are as hard on themselves as they are on their dogs. Mr. Attla spoke of people being expected to be able to snowshoe 50 miles a day to run traplines! He could not because of his disability, and became a professional Musher instead. This is why he needed to win- it was about survival for someone who could not run the family trapline. Toby's father's obsessional with winning at all costs is a bit abnormal when he has other choices. He is NOT a typical musher. The way he treats his dogs is NOT typical for a Musher ( especially when he complains about other people mistreating dogs and then mistreats his own). Whips are NOT a common part of training for non Native Mushers. Most races do not allow them. I've never actually seen anyone use a whip. All that whip stuff made me cringe- it's not necessary for training a good team. But whether it's Politically Correct whips have long been a part of Native Mushing culture, and traditions change slowly. Also, Mr. Attla's book, which could have been the primer for this movie, was written back in the 70's when I was mushing. For all I know, Native attitudes might have changed a lot. I have heard that Native Mushers are now concentrating on better treatment and nutrition for thier dogs as their own living conditions improve. Times change.I guess Toby's dad could be seen as a kind of time capsule of another, harsher era. He wouldn't last long today- people who beat their dogs in races today get disqualified.
Toby objects to his father's attitudes because he has a heart- he loves racing too, but he loves his dogs more. He thinks his father is a hard man , and he is. When Toby begin to emulate his father, I was really disappointed. If you train a dog with cruelty, he won't respect you, he will distrust you. The moviemakers had to invent a financial crisis to make all this obsession with winning at all cost OK. It's a mess.
It's an exciting, visually beautiful story, but I can't really recommend it to those who have not actually experienced the real thing and met real Mushers. I think it gives people the wrong idea about sled dog racing. For most of us, it's not about winning so much as just being out there with your dogs. That's an incredible experience that all the money in the world can't match.

Excellent movie...! Persuaded by a friend to watch. (I was three at the time the movie was made!) A great Canadian movie.

Description

Sam is no ordinary dog. He is the son of Yeller, the four-legged hero who won your heart in Walt Disney's classic adventure, OLD YELLER. With his two young masters Travis and Arliss Coates (Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran), gentle Sam faces even greater dangers than Yeller did. From the ferocious attacks of wolves and wildcats to the hostile actions of renegade Indians, Savage Sam presents a heartwarming story of love, devotion, and trust set in the sprawling pioneering days of the untamed West.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sequel to Old Yeller.......2007-04-30

This is a great family movie, and if you liked Old Yeller, you will love this one too. I recommend watching Old Yeller and then watching Savage Sam - the two together would make a great "family movie night" companion set.

5 out of 5 stars Simple fun for kids........2007-03-07

Entertaining movie showing Indians (Injuns) having some fun.. We are Native American and Aztecan Indian so my daughter loved this movie. It is for fun, not to insult anyone. Bambie was as fake as this movie but we still like it. This movie has so many funny moments with people and animals. Will watch many more times. Movie is old so no reference to cross dressing, homosexuality, or foul language like so many Disney and movies in general have today. Not sure why Disney feels compelled to put adult humor in their movies for kids today, that to me is why they aren't making the great films of Walt's time. Disney classics are timeless.

4 out of 5 stars It was entertaining........2006-06-28

I liked this movie. I thought it was a good sequel to Old Yeller.

5 out of 5 stars "SAVAGE SAM" LIVES UP TO "OLD YELLER'S" STANDARDS.......2006-03-21

The sequel to Disney's family favorite, "Old Yeller" and every bit as good. Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran reprise their roles as frontier brothers, Travis and Arliss Coates. Both mother and father (originally played by Fess Parker and Dorothy McGuire in "Old Yeller") are away visiting McGuire's sick mother and have left oldest son, Travis in charge of things. Travis and Arliss are once again at odds with the old issue "who's in charge?" with Travis trying to get the work done and Arliss wanting to go off hunting with Savage Sam. Brian Keith plays the uncle who comes by to check on how the boys are doing and gives advice to Travis on how to handle Arliss a little better. During the story, Travis, Arliss, and their neighbor's daughter, Lisbeth are taken by Indians. Brian Keith gathers up some neighboring men to go in search of them, which include Lisbeth's father, Bud Searcy (once again played comically well by Jeff York) and Slim Pickens joins the group for a well rounded western adventure. The dvd plays with a clean transfer and good sound. I've not seen the newly released "Old Yeller 2 movie-collection" including "Savage Sam," but I don't think it features "Savage Sam" in the widescreen format either. I highly recommend "Savage Sam" as well as it's predecessor, "Old Yeller." These films will never lose their power to entertain and their appeal and charm are timeless.

1 out of 5 stars Horrific and racist........2005-03-28

This movie is absolutely racist. I can't believe reviewers do not point this out. How many times are the Natives called "Injuns" or "Savages"? The Indians whoop, they holler, they steal, and they hurt dogs for nothing other than fun. Right.

When someone in the movie points out that the whites have taken over the land and the Indians...oops...I'm sorry "Injuns" feel threatened...he is told that it is okay to hate Injuns because they scalped some guy's family.

The stereotypical depictions are absolutely despicable. This is why kids always made fun of me (A Native American) when I was in school. Where is my Disney movie depicting my great-great-great-great grandfather Chief White Antelope getting scalped by the white guys? (Note: That is a historical event actually based in fact, unlike the tales in this movie.)

This movie is recommended only to persons wishing their children to hate Indians and join the Aryan Nation. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I'm saddened that others have not pointed this out. Are you all really that blind?
