This film is so good it unveil the true nature between lions and hyenas.

I watched it more times than movie films. Five star all the way.

This is one of the best cinematographic films I've seen on large carnivores in Africa. I have spent years working in the bush and have witnessed much of this and on another level, have worked there for 18 years and NEVER seen some of the things that Jobert has captured on film. It is amazing and breathtaking.
It is a bit too anthropomorhic for my blood, but most folks seem to like that. It is a DEFINITE BUY, if you enjoy the harsh reality of African wildlife and the truly epic struggles these large carnivores endure.

It is a documentary dvd that any African wildlife lover should not miss.
This is the first time that I have an actual duel between a hyena and a lion, resulting in the death of the former. It must have taken a lot of doing to track the hyena clan and lion pride to their eventful confrontations. It was a wonderful work of filming a wildlife event. This is my favorite national geogaphic wildlife film.

A Monumental Achievement.......2007-05-11

This is one of the best documentaries on wild life ever made. The narrator is incredible, the information presented is articulate and fascinating, and the footage of Lions and Hyenas in their natural habitats is amazing. What makes the documentary so outstanding, in my opinion, is that so many elements--photography, narration, writing, creativity, natural situations--came together so beautifully and were presented so clearly. The pace of the documentary is also finely tuned to the point where there never seemed to be a dull or irrelevant moment. If you have even the mildest interest in animals, I strongly suggest purchasing this documentary.

c'est un excellent documentaire;surement le meilleur jamais réalisé sur les lions.ce sont des images rares,vraiment superbes.mais le dvd est vraiment de très mauvaise qualité.on est loin de la qualité d'images d'un vrai dvd;on se rapprocherai plutot d'un vhs de mauvaise qualité.c'est vraiment dommage quand on connait la valeur de ce documentaire filmé par les joubert...

Don't Miss The Point.......2006-04-15

This film is much more than it appears. It is the story of the post colonial society, be it in Africa, Asia or elsewhere. The animals (hyenas, elephants, lions, etc,) are representations of types of people from various cultures that have been exploited by the "powers" of the world. More so than that the film is about the role of the World Bank in post colonialial societies. He shows how the oppressed have often become the oppressor. The film actually follows very closely with the plot of "The Visit." However, Mambety has proven that cinema can be reinvented. Cinematically, the movie is highly literary in that elements of foreshadowing and allegory resound throughout.

I LIKE THIS MOVIE VERY MUCH. IT IS A SLOW PACED MOVIE WITH TIME FOR REFLECTION. IT SHOWS THE UGLY SIDE OF HUMANITY. MEN AND WOMEN SPOILED BY AMBITION AND GREED AND MANIPULATED BY A WOMEN IN SEARCH OF REVENGE. THE HORRIBLE REALITY OF PEOPLE WHICH ARE ABUSED IS THAT THEY BECOME AND ACQUIRE MANY OF THE DISGUISTING TRAITS OF PEOPLE THAT ABUSE THEM. A WOMAN THAT IS ABUSED BECOMES A WORLD REKNOWN PROSTITUTE AND SEEKS REVENGE ON THE MAN THAT ABUSED HER. IN DOING SO SHE MANHUNTS THIS MAN BY PURCHASING ALL OF HER VILLAGE, THEREFORE TURNING HER HATRED ON LIFE TO AN EPIDEMIC PROBLEM IN HER VILLAGE.

A Wonderful Allegory About Structural Adjustment........2001-11-21

It's been a while since I saw this film (I've seen it several times), but what most reviewers miss is it's allegorical message. The film isn't about the old woman wanting the man dead, but the symbols behind the actions. The idea of an outsider (or actualy someone whose been made wealthy in Europe) asking people to do things they normally would not bring to mind the economic reforms of structural adjustment. This funny and sad film conveys the sense of afro-pessimism so prevelant today.

Setting, pace and characters are beautiful developed in this masterpiece of the African Cinema. Diop Mambety used F.Duerrenmatt's original freely, but with a strong own identity and style. An old lady returns to her poor home town, after she became rich. Wondering why, the people start to talk. Slowly the viewer discovers her story. The old lady is aristocratic every moment of the movie, even in non-aristocratic moments...
Highly recommended for everybody, who likes real storytelling cinema.

Our opinion about this film is good. The actors act very naturally, but they aren't very famous actors.The landscape is very beautiful. The film is set in a very nice place. It's negative, because the text and the names aren't based on Dürrenmatts' play. You see, that the people are very poor! The film is too different from the book.
