A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold.

A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton

Simply awful "adaptation" of Hunter's "Point of Impact".......2007-07-05

"Shooter" is the grotesque adaptation of Stephen Hunter's excellent novel "Point of Impact" to the paranoid delusions of Antoine Fuqua and the producers. Fuqua has taken Hunter's perennial Bob Lee Swager from his traditional values, Vietnam Marine scout/sniper background, and rural Missouri/Arkansas heritage and transposed him into a shallow and unbelievable GWOT veteran betrayed by international butchers and various old fat white men stereotypes. Wahlberg is entirely unbelievable as a principled Marine Scout/Sniper veteran and the other characters suffer from miscasting and horrible development in the screenplay. Fuqua's GWOT misrepresentation as an unequal conflict between "haves" and "have nots" is nothing more or less than Michael Moore redux. Technically, a movie centered around precision long range shooting should provide a treasure trove of interesting detail, as Hunter does in "Point of Impact". Fuqua, however, concentrates on demonstrating firearm and ballistic ignorance, favoring big guns and ludicrous details and tactics. Continuity is on vacation here, with close ups of muzzles of one rifle flashing to entirely different rifles being actually fired. The real tragedy here is that in Hunter's "Point of Impact" Fuqua had a clear and detailed blueprint for an excellent movie. Instead Fuqua and his producers made a hollow travesty of the original story. The most that can be said is that "Shooter" serves as a complete and detailed bad example.

Okay, but just okay.......2007-07-05

It can be fun to watch if you've never read the Stephen Hunter novel and can overlook some technical inaccuracies. Or if you can just forget about the novel and watch the movie for itself.

For fans of Hunter's novel the disappointment can be that Wahlberg's character is not the Bob Lee Swagger that Hunter wrote about - a retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, Vietnam Veteran, and ol' squirrel hunter type from Blue Ah, Arkinsaw.

Hunter's character oozes a Scotch-Irish type of rural Southernness from nineteen-fortysomething. Wahlberg's doesn't.

No Sniping About This One!.......2007-07-04

Mark Wahlberg is great in this movie about a sniper who worked for the government being called out of retirement, allegedly to do a job in the interests of national security. Something goes awry, and suddenly Wahlberg's character (Swagger)is a fugitive. There is a nice plot here with a well-timed twist. There is also plenty of action with car chases, gun fights and explosions galore. It ends in a most satisfying way. Danny Glover and Michael Pena also star, and give solid performances.

SHOOTER (DVD).

Shooter is based upon the novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter. I enjoyed the novel some years ago; I enjoyed the movie last night.

Gunnery sergeant Bob Lee Swagger( Mark Wahlberrg) is a sniper. He's been recruited by Spooks to a special mission that only he is good enough to do. He gathers up his trusty .50 caliber Barrett sniper rifle and takes a couple of practice shots, then agrees to do the mission. Of course since Spooks are involved he is set up for something that he didn't do, Spooks are notorious for weaving a web of deception and double crossing.

The movie follows Swagger across the country making one outrageous shot after another. In the end Swagger pulls off a twist, gets the girl and saves the day. All in all a very satisfying movie.

Shooters DVD review.......2007-07-02

This was the single worst adaptation of a good action novel into an incomprehensible film I've ever seen! Ghastly in every way, the producers and director chose to ignore the book's excellent plot, change the venues and the characters, mess up the action scenes and obfuscate the story line. The casting was terrible with Glover as the Colonel, a young chick as the love interest, and a Hispanic as the FBI agent. Most of the dialog was impossible to follow and the whole script failed. Wahlberg was especially bad as the hero and the film was filled with mistakes and hardly rates a single star. Avoid it unless you want to watch total confusion and the destruction of the story line in a good book.

After seven seasons of groundbreaking comedy, what could possibly be left to accomplish in season 8 for Seinfeld and company, especially in this, the first season without co-creator Larry David at the helm? Plenty, as it turns out. This is the season that gave us some of the most memorable episodes in the entire series, including "The Muffin Tops," "The Bizarro Jerry," and "The Yada Yada," the episode that proved you can "yada yada" anything in life. Fortunately by this point in the series, the comic formula that sustained the show throughout its run had not yet begun to get tired, and the writers proved that they could continue to pull a whole lot of something out of the show about nothing. Case in point: "The English Patient," where they created an entire story line out of Elaine's hatred for the award-winning film. In "The Chicken Roaster," one of Seinfeld's most underappreciated episodes, Kramer switches apartments with Jerry and wages a one-man crusade against a Kenny Rogers' Roasters, only to becomes like Jerry and become undone by Newman. George continues to, well, be George. He habitually shoots himself in the foot as he continues life without Susan, only to find out marrying her would have made him rich ("The Foundation"). And Elaine gets her kicks, literally, horrifying her co-workers with her terrible dancing, spinning moves so bad they've actually become one of the show's most popular punch lines (go on any dance floor and you'll see someone doing "The Elaine" as a joke, it seems). Season 8 also continues the Seinfeld tradition of loading up the DVD sets with plenty of special features, including an illuminating documentary detailing how Jerry juggled his act as star and show-runner after Larry David's departure, and all new interviews with the cast. All in all, it's good stuff for fans, and there's plenty here for the casual viewer to enjoy as well. --Daniel Vancini

Great, just like the previous seasons!.......2007-07-03

You just can't miss it, another great Seinfeld Season.

The only reason that I do not give it five stars is because, in my opinion, there's no way, NO WAY, this season is better than Season Seven.

Yes, I understand the changes after Larry David left the show, I understand the approach toi writing was differente, I understand the show was still VERY good, entertaining, unbeliavably funny. But I thin seasons 5, 6 and 7 were better.

Anyway, Seinfeld Eight is head and shoulders above the competition in terms of sitcoms. It was an unique moment in television history, one that will not repeat itself anymore.

It's Go Time!.......2007-06-28

Finally, we hold it in our hands, the 8th season of maybe the best sitcom ever created.
In season 8, cast and crew, and especially the writers, found themselves in an awkward position. On one hand, they had just finished what some consider Seinfeld's best season (number 7), and a successful season 8 was almost guaranteed, but on the other hand, half of the series' genius spirit, Larry David, had just left the show.
As it is mentioned in the fantastic featurette "Jerry Seinfeld: Submarine Captain", this meant a total restructuring of the writing process. Unlike in the previous seven seasons, where Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld would revise other writers' scripts and have the final saying, season 8 is much more of a team effort.
That also meant much more storylines of the individual writers would get to the editing room as they were conceived by them.
The result is a show that takes all the characters' qualities, and human misbehaviours that were established in earlier seasons, and turns them almost into a life action cartoon.
In The Comeback for instance, when the writers take George's envy and (previously subtle) anger, and make it larger than life, so that in the end, he flies from New York to Akron, Ohio, just to come back at a guy with a witty one-liner that he didn't think of earlier.

I always enjoy the audio commentaries, of which there are far more in this season than in season 7, and I like it how the writers aren't shy of criticising themselves. That's really an attitude that I don't think anyone but Seinfeld writers can have.
In The Bizarro Jerry, for instance, writer David Mandel charmingly explains, without rest or full stop, why season 8 and 9 have a different feeling, and how the show commented on itself.
Tom Gamill and Max Pross, whose first episode was "The Glasses", have their last show in this season, and quite frankly, I think that was for the better. The "Notes About Nothing" subtitles list all their episodes, and to my surprise I discovered that they had written all the episodes that I found least enjoyable and too far out there.

Now, I find seasons 8 and 9 as hilarious and great as all seasons gone before, but for different reasons. And director Andy Ackerman describes it perfectly when he says that they felt like the teacher had gone out of the classroom, and the students could now have some fun.
And by god, they did!
They took all the pure comedy potential the characters always had, and milked it completely dry.

I also find that the final three seasons featured the series' best permanent characters: "Jacopo" Peterman ("Where is my pineapple?") and George Steinbrenner ("Big Stein can't be floppin' and twitchin'!")
A human caricature like Peterman could never work in seasons 1 through 6.

That being said, I know very well that some people think the show lost its zing, and I fully understand why they think that. This Seinfeld is not a different Seinfeld, but Seinfeld brought to the brink of the absurd. The thing is, the characters and their unbreakable bond of unfounded hostility (formerly the almost inperceptible cruelty of daily life) are so strong that they can take it without collapsing. Even more, I think the separation of the storylines into four distinct ones for every character brought each actor to his or her full blossoming.

But that, make no mistake, goes all to the expense of the ensemble performance.
Every character has much to do in each episode, which contradicts the series' label as the "show about nothing". They all have their hands full, and that's a huge part of why season 8 feels different.
Some people may tell you that all storylines are intertwined. That's not quite the truth. Yes, they come together in the end, but before that, each character goes his own way.
In rewatching early seasons, you'll find that Seinfeld's best moments were always the ensemble moments, when two people more or less had the same or (in Kramer's case) no storyline. Remember George and Kramer visiting the busboy? Or Jerry and Elaine in The Pen? Or Jerry, George and Kramer at Ackman the healer? Or the Jerry/George scenes with the NBC executives?
And lengthier face to face conversations are very rare now, too. It all more or less boils down to a daily debrief at the coffee shop. Why? Because there's too much stuff squeezed into the 20 minutes.

And yet, the characters never lost their "twinkle" amongst the mayhem, and that's why we love it.

The extras are excellent, as usual. The "Exclusive Stand-Up" material is missing, of course, since the show didn't have stand-up anymore.
I know I'll shed a tear or two when I hold season 9 in my hands. Originally, Jerry thought season 8 was going to be the last one, but we're all glad that he decided to add a bonus year, aren't we?

Best extras, good season if not the best.......2007-06-17

By the 8th season Seinfield had become very inconsistent. Still there are enough storylines and jokes packed into every episode to make it worthwhile. Anod on the dvds you can always fast forward to the scenes you like. I think there is a lot of repeat viewing potential on this dvd.

Season 8 - Is Great.......2007-06-14

Somehow, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld have been able to keep fresh ideas coming along to keep this talented cast busy for years. Can anyone claim that one season is better than another? There are a few classic shows that will remain in our culture for decades, and I'm sure that many of those can be found in this 8th year offering. This show remains great after all this time.

Like Sin City before it, 300 brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler (Beowulf and Grendel, The Phantom of the Opera) radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham of The Lord of the Rings, Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. More engaging than Troy, the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece, 300 is also comparable to Sin City in that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylized look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material as Sin City was. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge, 300 delivers. --David Horiuchi

I loved 300.......2007-07-05

I've seen this movie twice and can't wait to own it. Gerard Butler had the performance of his career in this film. It made $300 million in 22 days. I recommend it to all action fans.

Amazing!.......2007-07-05

I've seen this movie three times in the theater and I've been waiting to pre-order it. If you accept that this movie is based on a graphic novel and that it's main purpose is to provide eye candy (not historical accuracy), then you will love it. There is no real plot or dialog, but that isn't the purpose of this movie. This is just pure eye candy. Watch it and be awed by the cinematography.

A masterpiece of film making........2007-07-05

One of the most breathtaking movies that I ever seen. A visual treat with a fine cast. This movie makes you want to stand and cheer to it's last minute. The 300 Spartans last stand at the pass in Thermopylae is movie making at it's best!

I thought this movie aesthetically amazing. Being a classicist, you have to try to overlook the historical inaccuracies in films like this (I was ranting and raving upon leaving the theater after seeing Troy). At first I was skeptical when the commercials starting airing on TV, but the more they aired the more the film intrigued me. The plot and dialogue was enough to hold my interest, but I'm a sucker for action sequences. Again, I thought this movie was great. To me, it combined the aesthetics of Passion of the Christ with Gladiator and even a smattering of the Lord of the Rings.

It was one of those weekends where my girlfriend and I wanted to go to the movies but didn't knew which one to see.
Out of being totally uninterested in all the other ones showing we went to see 300.
After seeing it I felt like the entrance fee was totally paid back to us in entertainment, we were rocked, thrilled, it was one of those movies were everything just clicked from the visuals to the sound track and the action... whoa, the action of the movie... awesome. Even my girlfriend kept talking about it for weeks...
After that day I measure how much I enjoyed a film comparing it to 300.
Pirates 3, Shrek 3, Spidey 3, transformers, the simpsons... they all pale in comparison to 300, the real winner of this movie season.
Don't listen to people that talk about how it is not historically true, or that just complain about smaller stuff in the film.
It is just pure entertainment, you will hardly take your eyes of the screen, buy it...
I know I will.

Eastern religion re-packaged for Western consumption.......2007-07-04

While it was nice to see Nick Nolte working in front of a camera again instead of speeding down the highway blitzed out of his mind on drugs. And equally as nice to see Amy Smart acting more civilized this time instead of being humped like a dog in front of a horde of people on a public street as she did in the movie Crank. This movie, while fun to watch was nothing more than a load of Eastern religious "Self Realization" teachings presented in a way to be palatable to the Western mind. I didn't like it.

If you are into Buddhism and New Age religions. You'll probably eat this up.

How the Other Half Lives.......2007-07-03

Dan Mellman (Scott Mechlowicz) was a golden boy. Having the world at his feet, he enjoyed being the star gymnast on a star team for The University of California, Berkeley. But there was something missing. Going through girlfriends, including stealing his best friend's, Dan had a cocky attitude that kept him empty and up at night. Fortunately, his three A.M. sojourns for snacks at an all-night gas station lead him to a mysterious, older man sarcastically nicknamed Socrates (Nick Nolte) who seems like Yoda, but in all seriousness. In his peace arsenal is the ability to startle someone by getting up on the garage roof when no one is paying attention. Here they meet, and the sage man offers wisdom that is only greeted with a sneer and Dan's smart mouth. Offering more than change for snacks, he also tries to relieve insomnia. ("People are afraid of the inside--That's where everything important is.") The meetings recur, but so does Dan's dream life that bring omens of misfortune. In some of those dreams we see impressive confrontations from two forms of Dan. (One I believe represents his ego, and the other is his spirit, and the unsettling division presented show us the split of a person yearning for the whole.) Dan needs to "let go of his ego". Tragedy then does visit as his unconscious foretells, and he must deal with it. But his recuperation needs more than crutches, he needs a steady guide to cope with his inner fracture as well.

'Peaceful Warrior' is a unique and excellent adventure. It could have been a good as an inspiring sports' film, but it goes beyond that. The sparring between Dan's ego and Socrates' wisdom creates another whole venue, complete with scenes that show Dan coming to grips with himself. Nolte plays Socrates with grizzled beard and gravelly voice, but shows us a peace warrior who is no wimp. Confronting Dan quietly, he gives him the strength to confront himself. Some of the joy of this movie is listening to Dan and Socrates espouse their wisdom, like Greek teacher and student. 'Peaceful Warrior' could have been a hokey failure, but they really deliver in this refreshing film choice. (Based on Mellman's autobiographical account.)

Awesome film.......2007-07-03

I love this film and the book. There should be more movies made with this kind of message and wisdom. This is an ageless coming of age story and it has so much to teach all of us - especially people who are "coming of age," which I think most of us are most of the time! You will love it - whether you read the book or not. It is awesome.

Great film that follows the book.......2007-07-02

Nick Nolte was superb in this film as was the entire cast. The film follows the book and gives a good account of a wisdom not often found in our contemporary culture. As Nolte notes in the film "there is no higher purpose" than service to others. This type of wisdom is not something one finds in the modern world where the bottom line generates astonishing selfishness and promotes an attitude best characterized as 'Get yours while the getting is good!' This film is inimical to that standard, so if you are looking for something that puppets the American Dream, this film is probably not for you.

Millman's book advocates for an engaged spirituality and empowered life without rationalizations or excusses. What you will find in the film is more of the same. Nolte's character Socrates refuses to hold Millman's hand, as Millman navigates these mysterious contours of spiritual awareness found in the depths of the human pysche.

When the book came out over twenty years ago it asserted itself as "a book that changes lives." To what extent this is true is difficult to say. As someone whose life was radically changed, I suspect the effort to embody the wisdom teachings had more to do with change, than simply reading the book. But if you take these propositions to heart and embody them into your lives, I suspect you will find significant tremors of change emerging out of the depths of your own unconscious.

These types of changes rarely provide comfort - at least at first blush. A threshold must be passed through, but it is in the passing that the attributes of a warrior emerge into the light of day and take hold of the personality. The film demonstrates the passage of transformation which - in my view - makes it entirely worthwhile and timely to our contemporay moment. In this sense, the film presents a right-of-passage that these propositions hold for a contemporary audience.

What could be more important?

"Take Out The Trash Dan" ~ There's No Higher Purpose Than Service To Others.......2007-07-02

Based on allegedly actual events chronicled in Dan Millman's book `Way of the Peaceful Warrior' the film `Peaceful Warrior' released in `05 takes the audience on a shamanic spiritual journey in the most unlikely of places, a twentieth century urban center, more precisely, Berkley, California.

Synopsis: Dan Millman is a top gymnast at U. C. Berkley yet despite his many successes he feels empty and incomplete inside. Plagued by dreams of failure Dan is unable to sleep and finds himself wandering the streets in the early hours of the morning. When he stops at an all night gas station and service mart he meets a man of unconventional wisdom who begins to instruct him on the process of clearing his mind of all the useless garbage it contains in order to view himself and the world around him in a brand new way.

`Peaceful Warrior' is one of those rare films that both entertains and teaches without sacrificing one for the other. The production values are high, the dialogue believable and the performances strong. Scott Mechlowicz was definitely the right choice to play the role of Berkley gymnast Dan Millman and Nick Nolte delivers one of his best performances in years as the mysterious Socrates, garage attendant and "New Age" Zen Master. Add to the mix Amy Smart as Dan's love interest Joy and you have a little romance as well. I did find the film to be slightly uneven here and there, the best moments taking place whenever Nick Nolte (Socrates) is on screen. However the message is so well presented and the actors so amiable any minor gliches are forgivable.

Promise.......2007-07-04

Season 6 started out as a disappointment...it had the feel that the characters were 'pulling away' or 'dis-interested' as most shows do that are spinning their final season. The Episode Promise, however, seemed to kick things back into place and go from there. I am biting my nails down to the bone waiting for season 7, and have pre-ordered season 6 already. yea!

Please don't make Lex a wimp.......2007-07-01

Hmmm....I kindof agree with most of the negative comments of the show I have read, although I did like subterranean, well at least the last 3 minutes of Lex in his dark suit walking the aile of 33.1.

I have to admit that I'm beginning to like Lex more than Clark since he has more dimensions to his character, especially when he saves Clark when he was caught under metal in the underground base. I was hoping that Lex would have built his army but was extremely disappointed in the last episode where that last phantom destroyed his army in the lab...what was that all about? Just when I think that Lex is so smart and cunning, something stupid happens to ruin his carefully, intelligently-plotted, laid out plans to take over the world.

I do like Lana, she seems hotter now than ever, but I too am getting tired of Clark holding on to her. A man of steel with a fragile heart?...Time to kill her off, or at least put her on the sidelines, being Lex consort again in the future.

I thought the Justice League formation was cool, but having Peter Pan, no-power Green Arrow leading it, just didn't do anything for me. I'm glad they forgot about him in the last ending episodes.

I also am wondering how they are going to pull off putting Clark with the cape and nobody recogning him. Is Clark going to kiss all of them and make them forget (like in Superman II)? I also agree with some comments about having more flight and fight scenes. I didn't care too much about Bizarro at the end...With so many cool, evil characters superman fought, they had to take that one?

Also, time for Lex to know about Clark's powers. I know he knows, but might as well make it official.

The only last recommendation (my point of view) is to stop tearing down Lex's character just when he's making great strides. What's up with the wedding scene when he breaks down when he kills the doctor because he wants not to lose Lana. Please... If Lex is to rule the world, he has to have a 'darth vader' like character, some weakness sure, but not a total breakdown (no, I'm not a Star Wars fan). His character is great, and the actor is fabulous, but please don't turn him into a wimp.

Overall, I think the writers/producers are doing an excellent job with the series.

Great but missing something........2007-06-19

To begin, I like this show. Can't help it. This is one of the few television series I actually watch with any kind of frequency or deliberation. I enjoy the story, charaters, special effects, and a dozen other things...But like any real fan, I find myself discussing futilely with my family (who are also hooked) what should be changed. The series has gotten progressively darker and unlike in other seasons, the sixth season doesn't seem to have any feel-good episodes to releave the intensity. And also, this close to donning a cape and no one is going to recognize Clark? Time to pick up those glasses! And considering all the powers Clark has now, I wonder why the Robin Hood copycat (aka...) and his team weren't a little more impressed. I mean, he should be so out of their league! Still, I intend to buy it. Though there may be some episodes I woudn't care to watch too many more times, I especially enjoyed "Sneeze", "Rage", "Subterranean", "Tresspass", and "Noir" (Tom Welling does a great Clumsy Clark). I think "Justice" could have been worked a little more but it was good, too. Then there was "Combat" which was tough but amazing. All in all, definitely worth owning.

The Good, The Bad, and The Bizarre.......2007-06-12

This season for me was disappointing. To me this was not ventage Smallville. The season premiere, the season finale, the wedding, and an episode here and there, were actually ok. But to me it seems like when Smallville moved to The CW, the graphics weren't even close to last season's. In this season, the focus was actually more on the supporting characters (Lex, Lana, Chloe, etc.) rather than Clark. Which is fine, but I just think they should have given them better storylines than what they had. And I know that The CW network had to have budget cuts, but even the shows they showed in high definition (Smallville, Gilmore Girls, etc.) just looked better last year on The WB than they do on The CW. I brought that up because the graphics on Smallville just seemed to be used more towards the season premiere and finale and not the rest of the season. I mean bottomline, this season was disappointing with some of the storylines and the development of the characters wasn't up to the level it should have been. I mean if it was up to me, I would just download the episodes I enjoyed, and not buy the season 6 box set. But if you are a die-hard Smallville/Superman fan, then this set is for you. I was just hoping for something more concrete this season than what they put out.

This show never stops giving........2007-06-11

I have all of the previous seasons on DVD and granted some shows I skip more often than others but as a whole this show probably has the best short-tern and long-term story arcs of any show I've watched on Television. Even the most boring shows keep my attention and wanting to see next weeks episode to find out what happens. This season like others finished up some old story lines and started created some new ones. Lana's "birth" and Chloe's metor power is probably the most interesting and will probably be explored next season. Can't wait to get this boxset!

This is the Holy Grail of WWII movies. If you are a fan of Saving Private Ryan, Letters to Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Schindler's List, Tora Tora Tora, Enemy at the gates, or any other classic WWII movie (Kelly's Heroes, ahem!), and have not seen Band Of Brothers...than you need to stop what you are doing and order it right now and watch it...If you can't get it fast enough, still order it and rent it while you wait for your very own copy to come in the mail. I like Saving Private Ryan, but this smokes it out of the water. Smokes it people, smokes it....puff puff glub glub...

Band o' Blood........2007-07-03

I bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas and he was so thrilled to get it . Him, being in the military, loves it for being realistic, and also being a true story that's well played out.

I watched the first disk and was impressed by it, but having a weak stomach, I was squirming every so often, trying to avoid someone get blown up.
Four stars for the gore.

But this collection is a must own for every guy in the military, military buff, or just a guy who loves war stuff.

With Shogun a distant 2nd (and that was phenomenal), this is by far the best docu-drama/miniseries filmed to date! While Ally McBeal garnered more attention, Picket Fences garnered more acclaim. It was justified. Set in Wisconsin, the Emmy-winning drama plays like The Andy Griffith Show by way of The Commish. The focus is on small-town life from a law and order perspective. The action revolves around Sheriff Jimmy Brock (Tom Skerritt), his physician wife Jill (Kathy Baker), and their children, Kimberly (Holly Marie Combs), Matthew (Justin Shenkarow), and Zack (Adam Wylie). Storylines alternate between personal issues, like puberty and pre-marital sex, and criminal cases. As Matthew quips, "Things happen around here." At city hall, Jimmy works with officers Kenny (Costas Mandylor) and Max (Lauren Holly), dispatcher Ginny (Zelda Rubinstein), and coroner Carter Pike (Kelly Connell), who likes to exclaim, "Let me exhume the body!" Judge Henry Bone (Ray Walston) and attorney Douglas Wambaugh (Fyvush Finkel) dominate the courthouse. Cases include such tragi-comic crimes as a serial bather ("Frank, the Potato Man") and a cupid killer ("Be My Valentine"), but serious issues also come into play, such as assisted suicide ("Sacred Hearts") and incest ("Nuclear Meltdowns"). Unlike Twin Peaks, to which it was sometimes compared, Picket Fences could be heavy-handed, but piety never trumped entertainment, and Baker, Skerritt, Walston, and Finkel all won Emmys for their work.

Looking Forward to Seasons Two, Three, and Four .......2007-07-04

Whew - I'd forgotten how good this show could be sometimes! A quirky show for its time, tackling alot of issues and willing to take a stand on the said issues, more or less allowing viewers to form their own ideas. I watched a good part of the first season but then started to lose track with the following seasons so I'm definitely looking forward to coming DVD releases - this DVD set does feature a short featurette, featured on the last DVD disc - interesting to see everyone at the present.

Ground Breaking Show (really).......2007-07-01

Many other reviewers have covered the various aspects of the main players. So I won't rehash them in my review.

I missed the majority of the first season, picking it up when whatever it was that ran against it went to reruns. I entered Rome WI without any idea of the towns history or the background of the characters.

Without this history, the story lines and characters seemed very odd, but also very entertaining. I stayed with Picket Fences when the other show returned and picked up the earlier shows over the summer.

What first fascinated me was the complexity of the characters and bold daringness of the topics the show addressed. Later, in his other shows, David Kelly's penchant for interesting quirks and humor have become standard fare. But 15 years ago, there were so few quality shows tackling sensitive issues without resorting to such black and white positions. David's risks were indeed groundbreaking.

I must state that I am a life long liberal, and like most people who accept a "label" my positions on a number of issues are black and white to me and I can't understand those whose views are counter to mine. However, David's writings and the actors hired to flesh out the characters did give me a greater understanding on such issues as anti-abortionists, proponents of hand guns, and other social issues. While they didn't change my view, they did take the vitriol out of my arguments and allow me to "hear" what the other side was saying. All the while providing an entertaining median.

If you're a recent David Kelley fan, or one who picked him up with Allie McBeal, Boston Public, The Practice, or Boston Legal, you should take a trip to Rome WI where you will see the seeds sown for his later shows. While I enjoyed all of the shows referenced in this paragraph, (and being a Bostonian, it kills me to say this) I'd prefer to be back in Rome, with Judge Bone, and the edgy fresh writing I discovered there.

One final thought. If you've not seen Picket Fences before, give it a chance into Season Two before you write the show off.

Almost as I remembered it..........2007-06-27

I was so pleased to see the release of "Picket Fences" on DVD. I have been waiting years for this release. I have tried to watch Kelly's "Boston Legal" and I see so many of the themes (and, sometimes, story lines) from "Picket Fences" being recycled. Yes, "Picket Fences" does play as an overdramatized version of 'The Andy Griffith Show' at times. The stories are strong. The acting, almost always, spot on. I've watched a few episodes I haven't seen since the show first aired... I'm happy to be returning to Rome, WI.

Rome and Boston - World's Apart.......2007-06-25

Being such a huge David E. Kelley/Boston Legal fan and seeing the extraordinarily high ranking Picket Fence held on the Amazon pre-order list, I thought that I was in for a huge treat.

Needless to say, although Mr. Kelley plays a predominant role in both shows, Picket Fences is definitely not his best work. Boston Legal is both hilarious and brilliant. He deftly weaves in an out of current issues while consistently making you laugh and, occasionally even shed a tear. Picket Fences, on the other hand, is rarely funny, is especially heavy handed with issues/preachy, and, although it may not have played this way at the time, compared to the hard hitting/off the wall shows of today, it comes off as incredibly quaint. Matlock quaint. Senior citizen quaint.

15 years is an epoch in TV land. There's not a lot of 15 year old TV that I'm running out to watch/buy. I may have loved/waited with baited breath to see certain shows then, but now, I'm off to bigger and better things.

Historically, Picket Fences is well situated. Picket Fences fits in very comfortably with the shows of it's age. A little too comfortably, I think. In some ways it feels like an amalgamation of other shows from that period. Here's my best guess at how it breaks down.

10% Family Ties
50% Northern Exposure
30% Degrassi
10% Matlock

If you're yearning to wax nostalgic, give this set a shot. If, on the other hand, you're looking for entertainment that can stand up to the scrutiny of the present day, you might want to look elsewhere.

The Sopranos, Season 6, Part 1 is the most contentious release yet in the acclaimed series' history. While many fans think it jumped the shark at the exact moment Vito said "I love you, Johnny Cakes" , this season also contains some of the series finest moments and plumbs new depths of character, while continuing to add to the body count. Things get started with a bang, literally, that unexpectedly sends Tony (James Gandolfini) to the hospital and into a coma where he experiences an alternate reality while in limbo. At one point he awakes and asks "Who am I? Where am I going?" encapsulating this season's central theme in a moment of desperation wrapped in a fever dream. But it's not all existentialism. With Tony and Uncle Junior both of the picture, the capos in the Soprano crew try to take advantage of the situation and begin jockeying for position while a reluctant Silvio (Steve Van Zandt), acting in Tony's place, struggles to keep everyone in check. Things aren't going much better for Tony's family, as A.J. (Robert Iler) confesses to Carmela (Edie Falco) that he flunked out of school, and while at Tony's bedside, swears revenge for his injury. The stress of the situation finally gets to Carmela, who takes up Dr. Melfi's (Lorraine Bracco) offer to help and finds herself in the strange position of confiding in her husband's therapist, revealing for once that she feels some guilt over making the kids complicit in how Tony makes his living—plus there's the issue of whether she really loves him. Christopher (Michael Imperioli) continues to provide much of the comic relief for the series, culminating in one of this season's best episodes when he flies out to L.A. in a bumbling attempt to get Ben Kingsley to sign on for his fledgling movie (Saw meets The Godfather), and ends up mugging Lauren Bacall for her goodie basket at an awards ceremony. Sowing further discord in the ranks, Vito (Joseph Gannoscoli) finally gets outed as homosexual, and is forced to flee for his life up to New Hampshire where he meets "Johnny Cakes." Finally, even with New York boss Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni (Vince Curatola) in prison, Phil Leotardo (Frank Vincent) makes plays against Tony and eventually sets in motion a hit against someone on Tony's crew, and now a larger war with Johnny Sack's crew seems to be looming.

Series creator David Chase seems to be saying with this season that character is destiny. If so, then Season Six, Part 1 is taking the necessary time to flesh out who these people really are, and is leaving the destiny part up for Part 2. The fact that the series' writers have been able to maintain such a strong show with so many interweaving storylines for so long is a feat not to be taken lightly. That said, this season of The Sopranos does deserve some of the criticism it's received: the Vito storyline would have been better served by resolving it in fewer episodes, and the season ending is the most unsatisfying one yet, leaving many fans wanting more. But the bottom line is that this season deserves more praise than criticism, proving that even at its weakest, The Sopranos is still the strongest show on TV.--Daniel Vancini

If you are a fan of the Sopranos, how could you not love the first part of Season Six. Once again an action packed thriller. Couldn't believe that Jr. shot Tony. But then again, there are a lot of characters that would love to see the Mob Boss dead. Can't wait for Part 2 to come out.

After seeing this movie all I have to say is I hope Hugh and Drew will continue to pair up again in other movies. Their onscreen chemistry was unmistakable. And besides the great music heard throughout the supporting cast Brad Garrett, Haley Bennet, Kristen Johnson, and Campbell Scott was equally amazing. For people who don't like Hugh Grant, this movie will change your mind!!

There are good types of movies you can see. Different types. Not just action/adventure/fantasy films like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Harry Potter," but there are some comedies like spoof, and others are romantic comedies.

I have to admit that one of the first most calmest things of a movie genre is a romantic comedy. Especially, when there's lots of love songs. So, watching a movie like "Music and Lyrics," perhaps, you should be entertained with lots of love, excitement and joy through a romantic comedy.

"Music and Lyrics" opens up with Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) singing the song with his band in an 80's style music video called "Pop! Goes My Heart." And that's what makes a movie like "Music and Lyrics" shine, and for the lots of its parts, it works.

The movie tells the story about Alex Fletcher, who is in a band. He is one of the most popular bandsman. He one days meets a lovely woman, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), when Sophie waters the plants in his house. Together, they come for a good song to write for them, as singers, to perform.

But on the other hand, a young pop star, by the name of Cora Coleman (Haley Bennett) wants to have Fletcher write another song for her. Now, see that's one thing for Alex to work it out with Sophie, maybe yeah, along with his businessman, Chris Riley (Brad Garrett). But their work has brought them faith, friendship and love.

Honestly by trying to be a movie critic, I can know of old romantic comedies, like "Meet the Parents" and "50 First Dates," that I found "Music and Lyrics" to be charming. It has plenty of appropriate humor for the teens, yet kids can try to understand the humor at age 10.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are great together as the lovely romantic comedy couple. They perform a great performance and their singing is incredible. When it comes to music, they are both absolute geniouses, and that's what a type of a movie "Music and Lyrics" should be like. But another great star of the film is Brad Garrett as Alex's businessman, Chris Riley. He sure is funny with his funny humor, and that's another thing that shouldn't stop you from seeing "Music and Lyrics."

If you like romantic comedies, you should definitely enjoy "Music and Lyrics." There's plenty of humor for the teenagers and kids who are older than 10, maybe 8 or 9, should enjoy this movie. I, for one, can take this movie with a lot of movement and feel, and that's what you should get with a movie like "Music and Lyrics."

This movie was cutesy, campy and trite. It was a cliche parody of itself from the beginning. And that is part of what makes it so wonderful. It doesn't try to pretend to be something it't not.

Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are thrown together in the oddest and most unlikely of circumstances when Grant, a throwback to the 80's pop music scene, is offered a chance to write a song for an un-and-coming 21st century teen queen that is an almost annoyingly accurate parody of Shakira, Christina Aguilara and a host of other would be starlets you could name.

When a struggling Grant can't seem to find the words to express his heart's melody, Barrymore walks in completing a pairing that is as wonderful personally as they are professionally.

This is a darling comedy/drama/romance/whatever you'd like to call it... I highly recommend it!

This is an adorable boy meets girl type of movie. I had heard through friends that this was a great movie but was even more pleasantly surprised after watching it! Great feel good movie and wonderful satire of the 80's music scene.......e
