This is a by-the-numbers tale of political chicanery and fallen idealism, but it works because of several strong performances. James Spader and John Cusack play law-school pals whose college idealism quickly falls away once they reach the real world. Playing against type, Spader is the straight arrow who goes on to work for the Justice Department. Cusack is the slippery conniver who parlays a job as an aide to an aging senator (Richard Widmark) into a springboard to elective office, all the while cutting corners, compromising his integrity, and breaking rules. For good measure, there's also romantic backstabbing. The film tends to get a shade heavy on the moralizing as Cusack slides further down the slope to outright corruption; Spader practically carries a sign saying, "I have the moral high ground." Still, both actors give their characters an interesting spin, and it's always good to see Widmark back in action. --Marshall Fine

Good Flick.......2007-01-10
A wonderful early 90s film that still holds on to the lure of classic 80s movies. It a pretty good story about two young men and the paths they take out of law school. If your a cusack or james spader fan it is a movie to see. In addition if you ever attended the University of Virginia Law School or as an undergraduate, it is a must see. The first 20 minutes or so of the movie takes place on grounds. You will recognize many places including, the rotunda, mincers, michaels bistro, brown college, the tracks by wild wings and more.
A great start fades away quickly.......2003-11-28
If you decide to watch "True Colors", I would advise you to watch about the first 30 minutes and then turn it off. The opening of the film is great, and will have you really gripped, but the movie will soon turn very familiar and you'll lose interest. By the end, you will almost laugh at the ridiculous conclusion.
The two main stars are James Spader and John Cusack. They meet the first day of law school at UVA when Cusack smashes into Spader's car on move in day, starting a huge fight between the two. No points for guessing that they will end up roommates. They overcome this tough start and become good friends. Cusack comes from rather humble roots, to say the least, while Spader has a somewhat higher pedigree. In fact, he is dating the daughter (Imogen Stubbs) of a senator (Richard Widmark). It doesn't take long before Cusack is lying left and right about his background, trying to impress everyone. This continues to Capital Hill, when both young men are hired in Washington. Spader is an assistant DA, Cusack works on Widmark's staff.
From here, you can guess what will happen. Knowing that Cusack is such a rotten apple, nothing will be a surprise. He will double cross his "friend" so many times, and in so many cruel ways, that it's implausible that Spader could even stand in the same room with him.
I won't give the story away, but I will say that the end of the movie, when Spader gets his "revenge" is so corny and unbelievable, I would rather have had him pull out a gun and just shoot him. That would have made more sense than this. All in all, the film starts out great and will ultimately leave you cold.
"Friendship is like the morning dew...".......2003-08-19
I think this is an excellent movie. Good screenplay, good idea, great direction, great acting. John Cusack and James Spader make you believe they are actually best friends, they own their characters and the friendship between their characters.
Soggy Political Drama.......2003-07-24
True Colors stars John Cusack and James Spader as law school buddies on very different career trajectories. Spader plans on going into the Department of Justice and resigns himself to serving the public. Cusack, on the other hand, is an extremely ambitious politician. I bet you can tell where this situation is headed! Despite their differences, they remain friends, even after Cusack steals Spader's girlfriend from him.
The movie tries to examine issues of power and corruption. Unfortunately, the plot is so stale and obvious that it fails to add anything new to this arena. Spader and Cusack are fine, but Imogen Stubbs, as the woman they both love, is terrible. She's a Brit playing an American, but her accent creeps in far too often, which is a huge distraction. I'm a big fan of John Cusack, but this movie is definitely one of his lesser accomplishments.

Alot more than I expected!.......2004-04-27
I love surprises and this movie was a big one I took a chance basically becouse I wanted some good KUng Fu but I have almost all other Fu flix so i got to digging around in the store and this movie just stood out from its packaging looking good with cantonese DTS or 5.1DD(same for English and it is widescreen so I guessed I would try it.There are great movies out there you never hear of, this is one of them. Its a large Samurai/Kung Fu Action Epic.Everything is gigantic in this movie, example there is a fight scene where two guys face off on a giant mountain peak.Or fights in a large jungle or village always with large sweeping camera angles witch is so perfect for this movie. Also the costumes and makeup are outstanding. The fights are also great. The performances in this movie is what really did it for me they are all terrific especially Elvis Tsui who plays a drunken munk which is really great, this might be a bit of a stretch but his performance reminded me alot of Mifune the legendary Japanese actor who did movies like ,seven samurai, yojimbo, hidden fortress, and Throne of blood you probaly know who i mean if not watch his films.Anyway this film is great I highly recommend it! Oh yeh the picture is pretty darn good and its audio is your choice with either Enlish OR Cantonese 5.1 DD or also Cantonese DTS,With Eng.Subtitles

Description
Kirk Wong (Jackie Chan's Crime Story) directs this gritty gangster action drama set in 1950's Hong Kong, which also stars Ti Lung ("A Better Tomorrow") and Brigitte Lin ("The Bride With White Hair"). Framed for killing a cop, triad member Ho (Ti) flees in exile, only to return 5 years later to take revenge on gangster tycoon Kuk (Director Kirk Wong himself) for abusing his girlfriend May (Lin). Filled with Kirk Wong's trademark visual styles and raw, unflinching violence.
Customer Reviews:
Great revenge drama.......2004-08-05
Let me just say that I am a huge fan of Brigitte Lin (Ching-Hsia) and if this goes for you then see this great revenge drama. Ti Lung and Raymond Wong are gangster brothers - Wong has a change of heart and becomes a minister. Lung goes away into hiding for 5 years and returns older and wiser. Lin plays May, Lung's old flame who is now unhappily married to a mob boss old enough to be her father. Lung convinces her to leave her mean husband and leave with him. May is killed by a crooked cop sent by her husband and Lung goes gunning for revenge. Wong has a change of heart and helps his friend take revenge. I have to say it was difficult watching Lin play an abused wife who ends up viciously stabbed to death. She looked as beautiful as ever...the Chinese consider her the most beautiful actress that ever lived. Lin is a true actress who can really emote from just her lovely eyes. Just watch "Deadly Melody" and see her famous icy stare of death. Great film!
