Marie Latour (Isabelle Huppert) wants to be a singer, but she is a woman struggling against poverty in war-torn France, with two children to feed and a husband away fighting. When a neighbor becomes pregnant, Marie performs an abortion and is rewarded for her services with a Victrola. It's a small step from the Victrola to an income, and Marie finds that she likes to live comfortably and feed her children well. Her husband Paul (Francois Cluzet) returns and attempts to coerce her into being the type of wife he imagines he wants, but Marie insists on running things her way, and her husband is relegated to the role he imagined for her. She finds contentment in her power (merely the power to be herself and pursue her desires), but things are terribly out of balance in the world she was born into and eventually revenge is exacted. Claude Chabrol (Madame Bovary) has created a remarkably complex and poignant film about a very complex subject: the true story of the last woman to be executed in France by guillotine. An important film to see. --James McGrath
Description
From acclaimed director Claude Chabrol (La Cérémonie, Merci Pour Le Chocolat) comes the compelling true story of working-class housewife Marie (Isabelle Huppert- The Piano Player, 8 Women), who performs illegal abortions in France during World War II, evading the Nazis, and betraying those she loves. Brought to life by Chabrol on actual locations, The Story of Women is an honest, original, and utterly absorbing film, which won Isabelle Huppert Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.

5 out of 5 stars US Men's Soccer Team Should Be This Gutsy.......2007-06-12

First, let me state that I'm Greek-American; therefore, I am a soccer nut. Soccer is the original football and, in Europe, it's rarely called soccer - it's called football. The game is 90 minutes with a 15-20 minute halftime. Hands are not used - only the legs, feet, head, and shoulders. There are no downs, no outs, no tangle of bodies. A beef with a ref will get you a yellow card and another beef will get you a red card, meaning you will sit out the next 3 games and your team must play 1 player short. The US Men's team needs to be as gutsy as these women - they kick for goal 50-75% downfield, and their teammates go after that ball. They take 200% more risks than the men - and they're better.

However, the core of this documentary, aside from it being the departure of several members at once because of injuries, age, and "it's time", is their genuine camaraderie, love of the game, and love for one another. They mentor the new players and cheer them on. They truly LIKE each other and you don't see petty rivalry. One demonstration of their feelings for one another is when Mia Hamm lost her older brother to cancer and was with her family when a major game was being played. Every one of her teammates came onto the playing field wearing a black armband as a symbol of their mourning for her loss.

Babies come to soccer practice while their moms are getting back into shape and other team members take care of them. Those who retired, retired at the top. The new team, with still some of the older members, has learned the meaning of friendship from these women. They really do like one another, and that's what makes a good team. In fact, I can't even recall any players ever receiving a yellow or red card, or a foul.

I love European men's soccer and watch it all the time, especially the teams I really like. Men (especially the US Men's team) take heed - you can learn a lot from the US Women's team. THIS is how soccer should be played.

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational true story! .......2007-01-05

Well-needed, long overdue story, very inspiration to all young people involved in soccer today.

5 out of 5 stars best movie about soccer ever! .......2006-11-04

This is the best movie to show ANYONE how Woman's soccer has evolved! It also shows how the soccer players are really people, not celebrities! It's amazing to see how far they've come as a team and hear many different people talk about different events (the players themselves, coaches, new reporters ect.) I would highly recomend this for anyone!:)

5 out of 5 stars The World at Their Feet - The Legendary Story of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team.......2006-08-15

My family really enjoyed this DVD. It was informative and interesting listening to the players perspective of the sport. Our daughter has been playing soccer for the last 14 years and we have followed the U.S. Women's team. We really enjoyed this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Story for All Our Girl Athletes.......2006-07-08

This is a magnificent story that must continue to be told. This story is for young athletes (starting at 8) and for their parents. Young women soccer teams should gather and watch it together and try to imagine a world where they would not have access to their sport. It is so easy to forget how far we have come during this generation encouraging and celebrating our female athletes. Since the advent of Title IX in 1972, we have begun the journey of equality for girls and young women in access and participation in sports, availability of college athletic scholarships, and access to professional sports careers with fair pay. The young women in this video were pioneers and heroines and what a story they created as they made their way to the World Cup and the Olympic games and pioneered the women's soccer league. The archived footage used to tell the story is magnificent. A video of a similar genre but with a story that predates Tile IX is the documentary "Billie Jean King: Portrait of a Pioneer". You have to see this one, too.

Feminism is a problematic word: to some it means the ongoing struggle for the equal rights of women; for others the connotations are derogatory, the word conjuring images of emasculating woman. And for still others, mostly the younger generation who grew up with mothers in the workforce, the term is outdated, referring to a movement whose relevance is diminishing. Postfeminism, antifeminism, the feminist backlash--these terms are wielded with little understanding of the context in which the feminist movement was born. Luckily, Ken Burns and Paul Barnes have created this superb documentary, Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, to remind us of the roots of the women's movement and to show just how far we have come in such a short period of time.

In the 19th century, Susan B. Anthony had few choices for her life: to live with a husband as "a doll or a drudge" (marry a poor man, she explains, and you spend your life doing housework as a drudge; marry a rich man, and you spend your life prettying yourself up and looking like a doll), to work as a schoolteacher, or to live with her family as an "old maid." And while she chose the life of the spinster to retain her independence, she didn't resign herself to a life of leisure. Born into a Quaker family devoted to abolition, Anthony championed the reform movement and dedicated herself to the suffragette life. In contrast, Elizabeth Cady Stanton married and had many children, yet this did not stop her from seeking the vote for women. A friendship with Lucretia Mott sparked a desire in this abolitionist to work for the cause of women, and Stanton and Anthony eventually teamed up to fire up the revolution of women in the United States.

This documentary, in the now-well-known Burns style--actors reading the works of Stanton and Anthony, archival footage and photos, commentary from historians--highlights not just the work of these women, but their friendship and their lives. Stanton and Anthony didn't live long enough to cast votes themselves, but their legacies and their struggles live today. Not for Ourselves Alone is a stunning testimonial to what's been accomplished and brings to life the two women to whom every female in the U.S. owes a tremendous debt. --Jenny Brown

It would be totally inadequate for this reviewer to say that NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE:The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony is simply a "must-see","well done","moving","dramatic","compelling"etc.etc. documentary of the two forgers of the early Woman's Suffrage Movement. This Ken and Paul Burns treatise has been so carefully, sensitively and lovingly handled, crafted and assembled that I was moved to anger, incredulity, sympathy, action and finally to just good ol'tears!
NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE tells in vivid detail, based upon the enormous source material and writings and correspondence of the two amazing women of the 19th -century,Cady Stanton and Anthony, who almost in a battle alone, fought tirelessly for the equality and dignity and rights of all women to receive and exercise their rights as they saw guaranteed to them under the United States Constitution and The Decalration of Independence. These two pioneers maintained an endearing fifty year friendship, endured hardships,misunderstandings,trials,boos-and-jeers,and the sometime opposition of their own sex as well as the opposite sex AND race, and above all ,totally opposite lifesyles and temperaments in order to join faculties to push for what they themselves NEVER saw in their own lifetime...the 19th Amendment guaranteeing the woman's right to vote.Without these two women, much legislation that all of us now accept to be totally understood ,would never be in law today. The Burns Brothers have created an absolute masterpiece, running for 210 totally absorbing minutes minutely detailing how these two women met,how they were alike and unalike, and how their neverending faith and trust in each other and their common-held beliefs was the ultimate key for those women of the following generation to complete the task of gaining equal rights for all women. This is a very typical Burns format for his PBS documentaries complete with voiceovers, historian interviews, still tintypes.Where this particular documentary really succeeds above the other Burns' PBS features is the tender and deliciously sensitive narrative that has been scripted to tell Stanton and Anthony's story. This is a very absorbing piece of art that all peoples would greatly benefit from viewing. It is more than informational...it is life-giving.These were the women who "sowed winter wheat for others to harvest".They were "the women who worked miracles!"

    4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Women's Suffrage Film.......2005-10-03

This three hour film covered everything you ever wanted to know about the suffrage movement. It was another excellent Ken Burns effort. I liked the way it was divided up into chapters. I'm teaching a women's history class and had a limited amount of time for a film (1 hour). So I was able to show their early life, twenty years later and the conclusion of the suffrage struggle by selecting certain chapters. I would highly recommend this film for any women's history buff.

5 out of 5 stars A story lost to history.......2003-10-31

I'm a woman in a male-dominated field, engineering. But I always cringed at the "feminist" viewpoints and attitudes of some of my friends. I did my work and didn't really think about being the only female in class. All that changed when I saw this documentary.

For the first time, I understand what a woman's life was like back 150 years ago. I understand how much progress has been made, and how everything that I take for granted every day -- being able to choose my career, have a life separate from my husband, vote, own property -- was gotten only through the incredible struggle of women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucretia Mott. They faced mockery, disdain, insults, dismissal and a millenium of tradition at every step, but never stopped fighting. They fought not just for themselves, but for me and every generation of women that came after them.

The fact that I graduated from high school and college without knowing the story of these two great women is almost unforgivable.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every cent.......2003-04-25

I saw this brilliant and beautiful documentary when it was aired on public television and while it has been readily available on VHS, I have been holding out for a DVD. Finally the long wait is over! The only thing that surprises me is that it wasn't offered on DVD earlier. This isn't just some angry feminist rant or emotional tirade against men--the suffragist movement is dealt with as the historical event it actually was, and this documentary goes in-depth with historical details, letters, photos, and even comments from very old women who were just young women when they voted in the first-ever election in which women could vote. After seeing this for the first time, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the unsung heroes and leaders of the suffragist movement, became one of my heroes, and I immediately sought out a copy of "The Woman's Bible". I have been returning to Amazon over and over, checking to see if this was on DVD yet, and it had gotten to the point where I didn't hold out much hope that I would find it. I can't begin to describe how excited I am over this!

5 out of 5 stars One of the top 5 best video documentaries I've ever seen..........2000-11-03

And I've seen a LOT of video documentaries!

I always thought of myself as somewhat well-informed on the topic of American History, but I knew virtually nothing about these two incredible women.

Their friendship, the beautiful blending of their unique gifts to create one stupendous and powerful whole of a suffrage movement, their dedication and devotion - all these elements combined to make this story perfectly wonderful.

I borrowed the video from our local library, but I think I need to buy it. I've watched it twice and wept tears of joy and gratitude at these womens' sacrifice and unselfish labors for all womankind. It is a delight to watch.

I just had no idea women had to fight so hard and so long to be granted a basic human right like voting.

And Elizabeth's "best" lecture, "The Solitude of Self" was one of the most powerful essays I've ever heard. Very stirring and inspiring. Even the [background] music was superior.

This video will not leave you where it found you. Should be required viewing for everyone. Period.

A balanced, intelligent, restrained documentary that still manages to touch and inspire. Few stories exist that better illustrate how people can overcome early hardships and discover their own way to contribute to mankind. A film you and your children should see, and in particular, your daughters.

          Description

Sunset Story is a funny and intimate documentary drama that will make you think differently about growing old. It tells the story of Irja (81) and Lucille (95), two friends at a rest home for retired radicals. As they attend demonstrations, register their fellow residents to vote and debate everything under the sun, Irja and Lucille's verve and humor delight us. Sunset Story doesn't shy away from the sadness of old age; it reveals two elderly women's lives in an unusually authentic and surprisingly moving way.

1 out of 5 stars High school video project.......2006-11-01

I, like most people, have sat through hundreds of movies. Naturally, it would be impossible for anyone to be impressed with every one of them. Every time you push the "play" button you expect to witness some degree of creativity or tension or plot or escapism .... SOMETHING. After twenty minutes of sitting through this third rate documentary I found myself feeling at first disappointment, then anger. I tried, but I couldn't sit through to the end. In view of all the five star rating above I guess I just don't get it. NO stars.

5 out of 5 stars Life. and. Death.......2006-07-24

          Wow.
Paul McCartney now *is* the age in his song.
The time is coming for us all.

This doumentary is an absolutely essential experience for everyone of all ages. I'm recommending it to all my friends at the assisted living Lodge where I call Bingo. For those who have not had much experience with "the backside of life," who, unlike this reviewer, have not spent a lot of time visiting relatives in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities, this film about a "Rest Home' for retired radicals" shows that residence in these places does *not* have to be the end or drastic curtailment of who one is or one's passions. If I lived closer to LA, so that my friends and relatives here could come visit me there, I would move to Sunset Hall in a heartbeat when my time comes.
The central tale of two women there is well told and a timeless story of life, liberty and loyalty for all. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

5 out of 5 stars Very overwhelming experience.......2005-05-04

This documentary really made me re-think what it means to grow old. I'd guess before this I didnt think about it all that much and I would write older folks off no matter what thier opinion was because they were just old and senile, but I can see how wrong I may have been sometimes.

These two ladies in this movie crack me up, and theyr so honest and caring. Their friendship is one tht I wish I could have.

Really, if yer looking for a feel good movie or a movie that will just make you re-think what the future has in store for you then I'd pick this up. Would make a great gift for anyone who is taking care of an elderly parent or grandparent as well. Charming movie.

          5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I picketed........2005-04-23

Deeply moving, hilariously funny and extremely inspiring. A wonderful story about the friendship between a perfect "odd couple" pairing of women in a home for aging political progressives. A true love story between friends. Their connection made the film as much about what it means to be alive and curious and interested, as it was a window into a transition we will all eventually experience. It made me think and feel and fall in love with the characters and you can't ask for much more than that. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Touching, funny, unusal and well done.......2005-04-19

The courage and spirit of the two women who are featured in this wonderful documentary makes me yearn for a Sunset Hall in NYC. The film moves you to tears, then cracks you up with its bold humor. The DVD has interviews with the creators of the film which further adds to the film's humanity, wit and wisdom. I've recommended it to everyone I know. A rare treat.

            Description

Gangs have long been thought of as the exclusive realm of young men. But that image is changing rapidly, for today, girls are joining gangs in ever-increasing numbers. They are committing the same violent crimes as their male counterparts, and serving hard time more frequently. GANGSTA GIRLS examines the lives of four LA gang members for an inside look at their violent world. Crazy and Shy Girl are sisters. Crazy has spent much of her teenage years engaged in gun battles, but escaped unscathed. Shy Girl, however, has been beaten, shot and stabbed. Despite this, she remains dedicated to the gang, while her sister tries to escape the life and get her three-year-old son back. Hear from Silvia, sentenced to 25 years to life for murder at the age of 16, and La Lista, who was recently released from prison after a year behind bars and now lives in fear that her old rivals will come to get her. The stories of these young women take us deep into a world that most have never seen, a world filled with abuse, drugs, crime and violence, a world that will never again be the exclusive province of men.

              Description

Choices of the Heart: The Margaret Sanger Story is the dramatic story of public heroism, personal passion, and the private sacrifice of one woman's historic fight to promote family planning and sex education in the early part of this century. New York City, 1914. Modern progress confronts the oppressive prohibitions of the past. Moral crusaders enforce rigid laws banning "obscene" materials - including literature on safe sex and family planning. The result: desperate women with too little money and too many children risking their lives to end unwanted pregnancies. Working as a nurse in New York's poorest neighborhoods, Margaret Sanger (Dana Delany, China Beach) boldly fights to end this epidemic of ignorance. However, zealots led by the formidable Anthony Comstock (Rod Steiger, On the Waterfront), Chairman of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, are determined to stop her rebellious campaign. Facing prison - and making headlines - for daring to voice her opinions, Sanger is forced to part with her loving husband (Henry Czerny, The Ice Storm), three children and flee the country. Yet, public support for her becomes so strong that she overcomes the attacks of her puritanical opponents.
