Clockers
Based on the riveting bestseller by Richard Price, this 1995 crime drama was directed by Spike Lee with such authority and authenticity that it has the hyper-real quality of a stylized documentary. Fully capturing the thoroughly researched detail of Price's novel, the film focuses on Strike (newcomer Mekhi Phifer), a young, ambitious "clocker"--or drug dealer--who works the streets of his New York housing project, selling drugs for a local supplier named Rodney (played with ferocious charisma by Delroy Lindo). Just as Strike is struggling to get away from his dead-end life of crime, another dealer is murdered in a fast-food restaurant and local detectives (Harvey Keitel, John Turturro) consider Strike the primary suspect. In cowriting the script with novelist Price, Lee uses this murder mystery to explore the plague of guns and black-on-black crime in America's inner cities, in which drugs and death are familiar routines of daily life. The film doesn't pretend to offer solutions, nor does it dwell on the problem with numbing insistence. Rather, this taut, well-acted film takes the viewer into a world often hidden in plain sight--a world where options seem nonexistent for youth conditioned to have little or no expectation beyond a probable early death. Lee and Price are deadly serious in handling this volatile subject (which incorporates racism, powerless law enforcement, and political indifference), but Clockers is also blessed with humor, insight, and humanity. It's one of Lee's most confidently directed films, signaling a creative maturity that Lee continued to develop throughout the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon
Jungle Fever
Spike Lee's 1991 story about an interracial relationship and its consequences on the lives and communities of the lovers (Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra) is one of his most captivating and focused films. Snipes and Sciorra are very good as individuals trying to reach beyond the limits imposed upon them for reasons of race, tradition, sexism, and such. Lee makes an interesting and subtle case that they are driven to one another out of frustration with social obstacles as well as pure attraction--but is that enough for love to survive? John Turturro is featured in a subplot as an Italian American who grows attracted to a black woman and takes heat from his numbskull buddies. --Tom Keogh
Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee's incendiary look at race relations in America, circa 1989, is so colorful and exuberant for its first three-quarters that you can almost forget the terrible confrontation that the movie inexorably builds toward. Do the Right Thing is a joyful, tumultuous masterpiece--maybe the best film ever made about race in America, revealing racial prejudices and stereotypes in all their guises and demonstrating how a deadly riot can erupt out of a series of small misunderstandings. Set on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer, the movie shows the whole spectrum of life in this neighborhood and then leaves it up to us to decide if, in the end, anybody actually does the "right thing." Featuring Danny Aiello as Sal, the pizza parlor owner; Lee himself as Mookie, the lazy pizza-delivery guy; John Turturro and Richard Edson as Sal's sons; Lee's sister Joie as Mookie's sister Jade; Rosie Perez as Mookie's girlfriend Tina; Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as the block elders, Da Mayor and Mother Sister; Giancarlo Esposito as Mookie's hot-headed friend Buggin' Out; Bill Nunn as the boom-box toting Radio Raheem; and Samuel L. Jackson as deejay Mister Señor Love Daddy. A rich and nuanced film to watch, treasure, and learn from--over and over again. --Jim Emerson
Mo' Better Blues
With Mo' Better Blues, the story of a young trumpeter's rise to jazz-world stardom, Spike Lee set out to counter Clint Eastwood's cliché-ridden biopic of Charlie Parker in Bird. But the final product, a slick, glossy drama (with hip-hop jazz provided by Gangstarr no less), is just as superficial as the numerous Alger-esque stories of music stardom to which movie audiences are accustomed.
Denzel Washington gives a typically charismatic performance as the trumpeter in question, as does Wesley Snipes as his sax-playing rival. And as with most Spike Lee films, there are numerous solid performers in small roles such as Bill Nunn, Latin-music star Rubén Blades, and comedian Robin Harris. One character, however, attracted unwanted attention: John Turturro's role as an unscrupulous music-industry exec. Critics called the Turturro character, who is at once money hungry, swarthy, and perpetually shrouded in darkness, a classic anti-Semitic caricature. But the charge seems almost irrelevant in Spike Lee's cartoonish, overstylized world of impossibly hunky jazzmen, curvaceous hangers-on, and incessant bebop. --Ethan Brown
Crooklyn
Spike Lee's semiautobiographical, 1994 film about the good and bad times for a Brooklyn family in the '70s has passion and nostalgic good feeling, but it is also a mess of random reflections and arbitrary storytelling. The centerpiece of the movie is a little girl (Zelda Harris) who views the ups and downs of her parents' experiences (mom and dad are played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard), and who navigates the life of her neighborhood. Lee tosses in a lot of '70s detail (watching The Partridge Family) and other diversions (Harris's journey through suburbia), but he has no master sensibility controlling the flow of it all. The film is more wearying than anything, although bright spots include Lindo's fine performance as a talented man suffering from irrelevance. --Tom Keogh

Spike Lee - The Man.......2007-06-20
They could have put a movie on the other side of Crooklyn :(, Im still extremely satisfied. This is a piff collection. Spike did a great job capturing the essence (the lighter side) of emotion of every day life living in relative poverty like he did in Crooklyn. Watching these movies made me feel as if I were an invisible character.
You really get ur money's worth.......2007-05-14
I really like this collection, even though I thought it should have included his first work, school daze, instead of Clockers, u get five dvd's for the price of 1.
Good selection!.......2007-03-21
The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not a 5 is because not everyone will be happy with all 5 Films in this Collection. Point blank is that this a must get. You cannot beat the price for a good selection of quality American films. Very satisfied!
YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS!.......2007-03-16
5 CLASSIC FILMS BY ONE OF THE BEST AFRICAN AMERICAN DIRECTORS OF ALL TIME FOR $20.00! IF YOU THINK THIS ISN'T A GREAT DEAL THAN OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM! MO BETTA BLUES IS ONE OF THE MOST WELL PUT TOGETHER PIECES AND IF YOU ENJOY THE FILMS I SUGGEST LISTENING TO THE ACTUAL SOUNDTRACKS.
A Fantastic Collection That Is Very Affordable.......2007-03-12
There are a few artists who come to mind - Peter Max, for example - who strongly believe that their craft should be accessible to fans at any income level. Simply, art is solely not defined by its high price tag.
With the release of the Spike Lee Joint Collection (Clockers/ Jungle Fever/ Do the Right Thing/ Mo` Better Blues/ Crooklyn), the legendary film maker is making a very strong statement in the movie industry on producing an extraordinary product at an affordable price.
This is Economics 101 at its simplest, five movies for the cost of a couple of movie tickets at most theaters. It is as much a collection for fans of Lee's career as it an outstanding sampler for those just getting into his style.
And it begs a very important question; if Lee and Max - along with others - can do it, why isn't this practical approach done industry-wide within the arts?

A benchmark series in the history of anime, Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most widely discussed in anime. It's not the first series to combine mecha (futuristic machines, especially robots) with theology and a character-driven story, but it does so exceptionally well. The designs of the robots by Ikuto Yamashita are strikingly original; the questions raised about the future of the human race stimulate viewers' imaginations and the characters show a depth of personality rare in anime. The story is set in 2015, 15 years after a cataclysmic explosion in Antarctica that caused the ice cap to melt, killing a large portion of the Earth's population. Although it was reported as a meteor impact, the explosion was caused by human interaction with Adam, the first of a series of powerful, sentient creatures known as "Angels" to appear on Earth. To defend against their depredations, humans rely on NERV, a secret agency dedicated to destroying the Angels with their gargantuan robot suits called Evas. Only teenagers with special psychic powers can pilot the Evas, and the best pilot is the repressed 14-year-old Shinji Ikari, who is a more interesting, believable character than standard mecha pilots. The two final chapters of the Evangelion series (which originally ran in 1995-96) are highly philosophical ruminations that satisfied neither Anno nor the viewers. The episodes were remade as the theatrical features; however, only the original 26 episodes appear in this set. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: Brief nudity, violence, sexual humor, and complex adult themes. --Charles Solomon

A Masterful Work of Artistic Storytelling.......2007-06-25
*OVERVIEW and EPISODE REVIEWS:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE) starts out simple enough. A story about a boy named Shinji Ikari coming to a futuristic city and using giant robot-like Evas (Unit-01 himself) to fend off the invading enemies called Angels. Along the way he meets a mysterious girl and pilot of Unit-00, Rei Ayanami, the fiery pilot of Unit-02 Asuka Langley Soryu, Director of Nerv Operations Misato Katsuragi, the brilliant scientist, Ritsuko Akagi and his estranged father and Nerv's Commander, Gendo Ikari. There's also an intriguing cast of minor characters including friends from his school, Toji and Kensuke and Nerv's Vice Commander Fuyutsuki. But it ends in a completely different place than where it began, with so much filling its creamy center that it's hard to know what to cover in a review.
Yes, it indeed starts out simple enough: Through the first 8 episodes you probably couldn't distinguish NGE from any other giant robot anime ever made. These episodes, while entertaining, are as straight forward as anime gets. Then, slowly but surely from episodes 9-13, the characters are given to more detailing. We get to know them better as more of their stories and histories are revealed. A beautiful example of this is in episode 9 when Asuka falls down, asleep, next to Shinji, who is then tempted to kiss her before something makes him stop. The story is expanded upon as more secrets are revealed, which leads to more questions.
But then, during episode 14, which starts out as a boring "recap", half way through we get the first glimpse of what this series is really about. After the title card we hear the voice of Rei, giving a surreal and beautiful monologue with similar images following on the screen. This bit is practically visual/audio poetry working together, and gives the first hints of what's to come. The psychological and philosophical leanings of this episode would start to become more prominent throughout the series.
Episode 15 is really where the gears shift. The story has slowly built our interest in the characters and the many secrets up to this point, with as much humor and light heartedness as seriousness. In 15 though things takes a more mature, complex, and somber turn - with the end being the catalyst for the brilliant episodes to come. Indeed, episodes 16 and 18 are two of the most dramatic works of fiction I've ever experienced, with 17 being the calm interlude between them.
But then 19 comes along and trumps them all. If I could describe the chills I had when watching that episode for the first time... simply put, I don't think dramatic storytelling gets any better. Episode 20 is one of the deepest and complex, further diving into the psychology and symbolism behind the show. 21's back stories are woven so intricately you forget that you're watching an anime as the breadth given to the characters are incredible. 21's finale also serves as one of the most emotional in the series.
22 is one of the most disturbing episodes, diving into the psychology of Asuka this time in a way that will leave you feeling a bit shocked. 23 does what 22 did for Asuka and applies it to Rei. It also has the biggest, most stunning revelation in the series at the end of the episode, as one of Nerv's big secrets is revealed. These episodes also bring much of the "bigger" picture between Nerv, Seele, and the secrets behind the Angels and 2nd Impact into focus, which leads to the climax. That climax hits with episode 24, with the introduction of the last angel Kaworu. While one of the most perplexing episodes (due to its cryptic plot and dialogue), its magnificent finale - played out appropriately to Beethoven's final movement of his monumental 9th Symphony - serves as an outstanding closure to the main series before the final two episodes.
The final two episodes completely forego the story that's been building up, and focuses instead on the psychology and philosophy behind the show and its characters. These two episodes are brilliant in their own right. Episode 26 in particular, with its deconstructing of the meanings of reality and freedom, and examining of so many psychological hot points in the show (one's self worth, for instance) is an artistic high point in anime. They are not completely un-story related though, as the "melding of minds" in these episodes are a major plot element. But this works out great for the director Hideaki Anno who probably loved being able to get many of these feelings out through this series and these two episodes in particular.
For those wanting a closure to the story of NGE, "The End of Evangelion" is the grand finale to end all grand finales. While it won't answer everything in a nice, neat way (this is not a show that hands you answers on a silver platter), it provides an astonishingly powerful and poignant conclusion to the story and to the NGE series. I can understand the frustration of fans after watching the series and then the final two "series" episodes, thinking this was the end. In reality, the movie was MEANT to be the conclusion, but because of budget and time problems it couldn't be completed in time. The "series" finale will still stand on their own as the alternate take, but they're an essential alternate take as this is an anime whose meanings stretch far beyond the mecha-sci-fi, boy-saves-world genre. But the film sets a new standard in the art of closing a series on the perfect note.
*SERIES REVIEW
While the layers of psychology, philosophy, and symbolism would crush most shows under their own weight and seeming pretentiousness, Anno handles them with adeptness and acute direction. He skillfully weaves them into the story to the point where everything makes complete sense in relation to the characters and storyline. In fact, if you really take time to analyze the story, the characters, and the relationship between the dialogue and visuals with the psychological, philosophical, and symbolic meanings, you'll see this series does indeed have more depth than almost all others that have attempted to tackle similar subjects. In fact, this is a series which almost has to be viewed several times, as there are recurring motifs (both visually and in the dialogue) which link important thematic elements strung throughout. And if you're not watching carefully, you'll miss them the first and maybe even second time around.
I think the reason these ideas become so important is very simple, and that's because of the characters. Anno doesn't just create a random bunch of soulless, mindless, anime characters. He creates characters that everyone can relate to on some level. Because these characters have such range and depth, we begin to really care about them and their struggles. In the end their struggles become our own and they literally become mirrors of our own psychological profiles and problems. We begin to grieve as we watch them deal with such (self) destructive behavior caused by their circumstances and consequential frames of mind. It's because of this that the viewer actually cares about the more portentous moments, no matter how grandiose they become. I think it's very important for those out there to understand that all the elaborate complexities of NGE wouldn't matter without the characters that carry the weight and meaning of it all.
NGE is a show of extremes. Ranging from scenes of palpable, viseral power that inspire shock and awe, to the most quietly surene, surreal, and beautifully touching moments. These scenes are woven together as fine and eloquently as the Beethoven Symphony they play in episode 24 itself. And like that symphony, even though the parts are outstanding, the whole is much greater than the sum.
I believe this is a work of resounding artistic depth. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the absolute greatest pieces of fiction ever made in any medium. This may sound like hyperbole, but there have been few - if any - fictional works that have effected me both emotionally and psychologically like NGE has. If you put in the time and effort to actively watch this series, it will reward as many repeat viewings as you care to give it, as new layers and meanings will be uncovered each time. And I think that is, if nothing else, the first sign of a work of artistic genius.
*DVD REVIEW:
The Platinum Edition is far and away better than the Perfect Collection. The remastered visuals and audio are extraordinary. It doesn't get better than watching the big explosions in 5.1 Surround Sound! The remastered visuals are equally as striking. The reduced frame shake and jitter is a phenomenal improvement from the previous edition. It seems like they almost went back and re-animated parts of the show, making almost every scene look more vivid, life-like and alive. The Subtitled translations is another thing worth noting, as these translations are, by and large, more accurate. Even though I now hate the English translation of the song doesn't match the melody (always found it funny why it did on the Perfect Collection), this is a more accurate translation. The packaging is the only disappointment. The box is nothing special, the DVD cases themselves contain no booklets or notes, and there's no extras on the DVDs. But you get what you pay for as the price is a bargain. If you want all the other stuff you have to buy the Platinum Collection 1+Box and the rest of the collection separately.
so overated its funny. .......2007-06-09
I almost bought this set, but when I saw the entire series at my local rental store I decided to rent it first and see if it's any good. It took me about two weeks to get though the whole thing because I rented them 1 at a time, but I have finally come to the end. I just have to say right now that those that say this are the best anime ever have got to be smoking something. Best ever? No way, not ever. Doesn't even come close. This series can be VERY good at times, so good in fact that it rivals any anime I've ever seen. But at other times it's just a silly mech series. We are introduced in volume one to Sinji, probably the wimpiest character you will EVER see in ANY movie, series, book, whatever. I found myself absolutely hating him because he wasn't able to put aside his hatred for his creepy dad in order to save humanity. I mean really, he is the only one who can save the world and he's whining about his dad. What the hell?
And it's not just him I end up hating. Captain Katsoagi (sp), who is Sinji's guardian, is nothing but a drunken whore the entire first half the show, and is a sober whore for the second half. That's when she's off work, when she's at work however she's a no nonsense commander who yells a lot. And since when is it okay for military personnel to look like sluts in their military uniform? Gahh, shoot me.
Okay, I'll try now to make sense of this series.
---The Good---
Pretty much everything good that happens in this series happens in volumes 2, 6, and 7. Volume 2 is okay, not great, but okay. But volumes 6 and 7 are amazing. They are so full of drama and emotion that I was literally left in shock. They were GREAT, and this coming from a guy who was starting to hate the series before this point. These volumes are pretty much long in-depth background histories on some of the main characters, and they are great. Especially the one for Auska. before seeing her past I just thought of her as a whiny little brat who hated everyone, but afterwards I thought she was a whiny little brat who hated everyone, but with a good reason. I finally had a character who I could sympathize with. Her depression at the end of the series was so well done that I started shaking. Wow, what a story, what a powerful scene. Too bad none of the other characters were any good.
I tried to sympathize with Rei earlier but she never opened up, never changed, never really did anything at all. She reminded me a lot of Lala Ru from "Now and Then, Here and There", but Lala Ru was ten times more interesting than Rei.
One more thing though, nobody told me this series was so darn funny. I mean really, some parts were so funny I busted out laughing and rolling on the floor. A lost is perverted hummer, but it's still funny.
Here's an example. Sinji, Auska and Katsoagi go over to a hot spring after a long mech battle to relax. Sinji is separated from the girls by a large wooden wall. When Auska asks him for some soap or something he throws it over and hits her in the face. Then Katsoagi comes over to Auska (we can only hear them) and then we hear this.
"Here, let me see that"
"No, don't' touch me there, ha-ha"
"Oh, come here you..."
"Ha, no, don't put anything in there. Ha-ha"
"No wait, let me show you something"
The whole time Sinji is hearing all of this. Either you find this funny or you don't, but I found it hilarious.
---The Bad---
Characters. Oh God, where to begin. As I've said before, almost all the characters are either whinny little pieces of (need to keep it G rated, sorry), stupid fools, drunken whores, or insane nuts. All of them fall into one of these categories. It's insane; did the directors of this show WANT us to hate these people? If so than they succeeded.
Repetition. The entire first half of this series is just one cheesy mech battle after another and they always follow the same formula. People going though crises of varies degrees, idiotic looking angle with unbeatable power shows up, angle beats initial defense, people yell, everything breaks down at exactly the wrong time. More yelling. Then everyone takes a 2 hour coffee break as the angle just sits around and the humans come up with an impossible plan that ALWAYS has a 0.002% chance of working. Of course they execute the plan flawlessly and kill the angle, only for the same exact thing to happen the nest episode. I just have to ask, why doesn't anything ever work? Every time an angle shows up the EVA's break down and nothing on them seem to work. This gets old after, oh say, the SIXTH TIME!!!!!!
Ending. Yes, I know, EVERYONE hates the ending. Well so did I. the last three episodes are so bad I almost fell asleep. It wasn't QUITE as bad as I was expecting, but it was still terrible. But there was a really funny sequence in the last episode were we get to see all out main characters in different roles. Sinji has all the self confidence he could ever want, Auska is his childhood friend, Rei is a fun loving loud mouth who doesn't like people looking at her skirt, and Katsoagi is a hot school teacher. Other than these REALLY funny 5 minutes though, the ending sucked.
Unanswered Questions. There are too many questions that are never answered here, like SHY THE HECK WERE THEY FIGHTING ANGLES IN THE FIRST PLACE? What were the angles? Why did they only come to Japan? What exactly was second impact? What was that spear thing? How did a drunken whore get be commander of the most important weapons on earth? I would have settled with knowing why the angles wanted to wipe out mankind, but I didn't even get that.
Naked People Everywhere. Yes, this is a classic example of adult only anime. There are so many shots of naked people its embarrassing. Do these people have any sense of modesty? Their all a bunch of sex freaks who don't own any cloths. Yuck.
Soundtrack. its the same song every time an angle shows up, the same song every time something sad happens, and that's about it. Yeah, it sucked.
i really wanted to like this series but I just couldn't do it. Face it people, IT ISN'T REALLY AS GOOD AS THEY SAY IT IS!!! its just okay, not great.
ITS REALLY BAD... as in NOT good........2007-04-08
How so many people give this anime series anything beyond 1 star is mind bottling. yes, i said mind bottling as opposed to mind boggling which it is that too. i have so much frustration and pent up anger with this freakishly over-hyped series that when I hear of anyone who liked it let alone loved it, my mind feels like its trapped in a bottle because there is so much emotion that wants to break out and punch the individual in the gonads. Be that as it may, I consider myself an anime nerd and to prove my worth, the following are some of my favorite anime series in no particular order...
1) Cowboy Bebop
2) Trigun
3) Rurouni Kenshin
4) Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.
5) Gundam Wing + SEED
6) Outlaw Star
7) Full Metal Panic (especially Fumoffu and T.S.R.)
As you can see, some on the list consist of mecha type anime which NGE could be considered as. So I am not foreign to this genre but the crap that came out of NGE becoming a cult classic is beyond my understanding when there were better animes even at that time like Gundam Wing or the Macross Plus OVAs. Here's the review breakdown...
Story/plot: Horrible and purposely filled with plot holes by the director/creator. But before I go on any further, I must note that I am a Judeo-Christian, why? Because the story attempts to put a twist in the old Adam and Eve biblical story and of the end times. And let me say, as a Christian, I felt offended by the undertone of the storylines ending. The message the drunken creator portrays is very un-Christian like, but I'll let you decide that one IF you decide to embark on this hellish ride. Anyway, moving on, like others have mentioned before, the story *seemingly* develops until you reach what I can only describe as an incoherent psychadelic cesspool of flabbergast starting in episode 24 and onward. I have no desire to see the movie which I've read is supposed to fill in the gaps for the ending so no comment on that one. The story is basically about the end of the world and the godzilla-esque angels who bring it about and the human struggle to survive by fighting them with organic mechs. where, why or how these angels come about is a mystery, just another plot hole amongst many others. Assistant Director Kazuya Tsurumaki said of the series, "If a person who can already live and communicate normally watches it, they won't learn anything." I take that to mean, "only retarded individuals will get something out of watching this." Hey, he said it not me.
Characters: There are plenty, none of which you can relate to (at least I hope not) cuz they're all crazy granted the main characters are 14 year olds but my goodness, I would not wish any kid to be anything like any one of those characters. Even so, the adults are crazy too. But the thing that gritted my teeth throughout the series was the lack of character development. I hated Shinji's character in the beginning and I hated him in the end. He's the main character but there's nothing to like about him. He's a whinny, cowardly, cry baby and he stays that way all the way to the end. Rei is emotionless but ironically undergoes the most development but her character is riddled with plot holes and is boring anyway to care. Asuka is an annoying loud mouth who likes to show-off her sub-par abilities but suffers from an inferiority complex since she is apparently not as good as either Shinji or Rei in the Evas (mechs). Which reminds me, the story likes to blurt out snych ratios throughout the series refering to the characters connection with their evas that always seem to be in the 0.00XXX range and they always say it as "zero point zero zero blah blah blah and this connection is at zero point zero zero blah blah blah" and so on... it gets annoying real fast.
Animation: This is really the only redeeming factor in NGE. The animation is great and probably the best anime had to offer for a TV series of that time making it unprecedented. This is the only reason why I gave it a 1 star rating. I would have given it a half star but amazon doesn't work that way.
So folks, it is this reviewers angry opinion that you will not only waste, but gain a negative experience by watching this series. If by chance you happen to like the series, then im sure you hate my guts but if I saved many people from wasting away by watching this series, then i've done them a service.
Great Collection.......2007-03-21
For all the fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion this DVD Collection comes fully loaded...
if your an nge fan...this is the collection.......2007-03-19
product arrived quickly and in perfect condition, the sound quality was perfect and the video quality was great...the overall condition of the discs was outstanding as well. already being a fan of this legendary anime, I choose to review the product's condition as opposed to the content of this thought provoking, controversial, and psychological anime that was maybe before its time. Since its release, this anime is different than any mecha based themed anime ever made. being more about the mental state of the drivers of the mecha than about the mecha themselves. highly recommemded!!!!

As this popular sci-fi drama continues to unfold, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari, the pilot of warrior-robot Evangelion 01, begins to emerge from his shell. He's traumatized in a skirmish with an octahedral flying fortress, but Misato sends him right back into battle. Rei plays defensive blocker in her Evangelion as Misato diverts all the electric power in Japan to the untested cannon Shinji uses to destroy the fortress. (They'd never manage it in California.) Shinji begins to recognize his feelings for the taciturn Rei and the garrulous Misato. He also learns his textbooks lie: the devastation of the Earth was caused not by a meteor strike, but by the explosion of an Angel that human explorers discovered in Antarctica. Complications ensue with the arrival of the third pilot, Asuka Sohryu, a temperamental redhead who quarrels with everyone in sight. She and Shinji are forced to work as a team, piloting Evangelion 03 in an unexpected sea battle with a sharklike Angel. But Shinji and his friends face even graver danger from the plots of his scientist-father and the dashing agent Ryoji Kaji. Director Hideaki Anno continues to develop his main characters while keeping the plots and subplots moving smoothly ahead. Contains these episodes: 5. "Rei, Beyond Her Heart," 6. "Showdown in Tokyo 3," 7. "The Human Creation," 8. "Asuka Strikes." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot versus robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon

I FREGGIN LOVE ANIME.......EXPESSIALLY THIS ONE!!.......2005-12-31
I am only 14 right now but thats a perfect age to start getting hooked on anime!!I hate waiting every week for a new neon genesis episode to come on,so i thought..duh!why not buy them?but then i thought, now i have nothing to look foward to every week:(....but this dvd(and all the rest of them)are to good to wait for,so if you are thinking,do i wait and be suprised or screw it and be happy but nothing to look foward to?well just screw it becuase it is well worth it,plus you have no stupid commercials, just action after action! If you are asking, well i dont know i am the kind of person who likes to be all suprised and have something to look forward to,then you are just like me,but i got it anyway and have no regret, but i would advise you to watch a little bit of it like maybe to episode 12 or 14 and then buy some episodes like this one becuase,it does kind of ruin the feeling of excitement when you are just waiting day after day and then when it's on....WOOOOT(cant do that unless you watch it again, but you still know whats gonna happen,no fun in that),you can invite all your friends over and have a party watching all sorts of the new shows(i am a huge anime fan so i love fullmetal alchemist and samuria champloo and ghost in the shell...hehe basically i love them all) that show on saterdays(and thursdays if you mean just this show)on adult swim....but dont forget if you have the dvd's you can stay up all night watching MARATHONS of neon genesis.just to tell ya,this dvd focuses more on rei and a little at the end on asuka and kaji when they meet so if you are a rei fan then two thumbs up on this dvd:)
hope this helped you,i am gonna get the platinum collection so look for my reviews there;)
Evangelion Continues!.......2004-05-01
In this second part of the eight DVD collection, we get a little closer to Rei, to say a LOT closer. One reason why I can pity Shinji so much (unlike other anime characters) is that he tries to do good but ends up messing everying up. In this volume, we have Shinji try to bring Rei her new ID card. He ends up walking into her house, uninvited, into her room (where we see freaky looking bloodstained clothes and pillows), and picks up a pair of glasses we've been told were Commander Ikari's. Rei walks in, Shinji turns and sees she just got out of a shower, she walks over, takes the glasses, Shinji slips on the water, falls onto Rei, drawers go flying, and before we know it, he on top of her and her towel's completely off.
This scene has a very artful way of covering nudity with objects (...).
The next on the list of people who are introduced is Asuka Langley Sohryu, the Second Child and pilot of the German-made Unit-02. She's a real sassy girl, when Toji is crawling on the floor to retrieve his wind-taken hat on the aircraft carrier they meet her on, she steps on it. A gust of wind blows up her skirt (...) and Toji gets smacked.
I don't like revealing TOO much of the story but like my others, I give an overview of the episode, a review, and a closing overall statement.
This is the next chapter and still as good as the first, yet better. The series doesn't really reach the full swing of tension, drama, and action until around Neon Genesis Evangelion 0:5 Inner Sanctums. But that doesn't mean just give up now! Keep watching if you like it!
Overall: I love the DVD, the extras (like all the other DVDs) really are bone-dry (only a few previews but some are good ie: Gasaraki, Spraggain, Samurai X The Movie, etc), but overall, if you just want the episodes, you've got the right DVD!
A must-see despite interlace problems and horrid english dub.......2002-12-06
The English voices were cast appropriately for the characters, however the English voice acting for the most part is just plain *horrid* and the translation is often weak. You'll most certainly want to hear the original Japanese actors and watch the English subtitles where the translation is clear.
The DVD video and audio quality is itself very good, but as others have pointed out there are issues with the transfer. The video was not de-interlaced properly, so unbraided image scan-lines become briefly but painfully obvious during high action sequences, especially during freeze-frame, and the credits just disintegrate. I did not notice these interlace problems in the Japanese VCDs of these four episodes. It's disappointing but livable; there are few other visual artifacts but they are hardly noticeable.
Otherwise I agree with the reviews given by "confuse_a_cat" and Josh Leman.
This is my first DVD purchase from the EVA series and I plan to buy others. I already own a few NTSC tapes and have watched many of the episodes in VCD format.
"Desperate for something to touch".......2002-11-02
Now that we have met Shinji Ikari, the second child, it is only fair that we follow his encounters with the other children, Rei Ayanami, the first child, and Asuka Langley Sohryu, who is the third. All of these fourteen year olds are destined (perhaps doomed) to save the world of the Second Impact from the attack of Angels - bioengineered creatures determined to destroy the human population.
We know from some idle conversation that Rei has no memories of a time before her training to merge with one of the gigantic Evangelion built to stop the angels. Badly injured in the testing of the prototype unit, it is only in episode 5 that she finally takes an active role. Rei is withdrawn and unemotional, so it is only because of a wildly embarrassing incident that Shinji penetrates her exterior. Then Ramiel, Angel 5, attacks NERV headquarters and Rei and Shinji must work together to face the threat. Then later (episode 7), Shinji and Misato confront a berserk robot created as competition for NERV's EVAs.
In episode 8 we finally meet Asuka, who is the exact opposite of Rei. Loud, egotistical, and intensely competitive, she is the pilot of EVA 02, the first 'production EVA. Shinji and Misato fly out to meet with the fleet that is transporting the new EVA from Germany to Japan. Asuka is only distracted from making Shinji miserable by the arrival of Gaghiel, the horrific sea angel. As Gaghiel starts tearing the fleet apart Shinji and Asuka must pilot the untested EVA 02 while Misato tries to come up with a scheme to stop the angel and keep the two young pilots alive.
One of the things that is notable about this series is that the pilots, Shinji, Rei, and Asuka, are all too human. Shinji's underlying cowardice, Rei's distance from her emotions, and Asuka total lack of distance from some inner source of anger grant this story a sense of reality that something like 'Power Rangers' is totally lacking. I also have to commend the acting of the English voice cast for the color and accuracy of their readings.
I LOVE NEON GENESIS EVANGELION!!!.......2002-02-11
I'm in love with Neon Genesis Evangelion, and this one is the best! I've watched it over and over again. This dvd is funny and really develops Misatos character. I love the music in this series. It makes the best anime ever even better than it is. I think the reason I like it so much is because of the characters. They are really developed and each has their own personality. I think I want to go watch it again right now... Sorry I have to stop writing this.

Momiji Fujimiya believes she's just an ordinary Japanese teenager--until she learns that she's actually the hereditary princess Kushinada and her blood is mankind's most powerful weapon against the shape-shifting monsters the Aragami. As the centuries-old war between humanity and the Aragami is heating up, Momiji goes to Tokyo to work with the government agency fighting the monsters. She's joined by the roguish Mamoru Kusanagi: as a child he was kidnapped by a powerful Aragami and given seven souls, or mitama (symbolized by the "Blue Seed" of the title). In battle Kusanagi transforms into a werewolfish version of himself with sword blades in his forearms. He's challenged by the Jim Morrison-esque Murakomo, a servant of the Aragami lords who possesses eight mitama. The plot takes an unsettling turn with the rebirth of the god of darkness, Susano-Oh, whom Murakomo tends with Momiji's twin sister, Kaede--who died in the first episode. The adventures and romance are played against an ecological message that's wrapped in right-wing rhetoric reminiscent of the ultraconservative cabal in Gasaraki: contemporary Japanese culture is damned as "barren," "dead," and "cannibalistic". Although she tends to dither, Momiji never indulges in the whining and tantrums that make many other magical girls so annoying; the dashing Kusanagi assumes the role of protector-lover without losing his outlaw élan as Tamahome does in Fushigi Yugi. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: Violence, minor profanity and sexual humor. --Charles Solomon

Watch the battle for earth's survival unfold in the groundbreaking anime series, Blue Seed!

Good collection.......2007-07-02
I never mind humor in a serious anime but there are just some things in this movie that are so cheesy that make you wonder "WTF?!". An example is a guy creating a program to guess what underwear the main character was wearing and being able to use this program to help defeat a monster.....
Other than too many cheesy moments, there was plenty of action, a good (though somewhat complicated) plot, and good character development.
Blue Seed, one of the best out there!.......2004-08-06
A couple of years ago, I never thought about buying this series, but having the chance to buy the perfect collection seemed to good to pass up. I gave this series a shot, and what can I say about it? FANTASTIC!
This series has almost everything in it, action, adventure, some mystery, comedy, and even romance. Blue Seed shouldn't be underestimated for being an older anime, since it came out in 1995, and was later released by ADV Films in 1997. I really enjoyed going through the 26 evenly passed episodes, the characters were wonderful and memorable, and the ending fits the series well. There isn't alot left hanging, which means this series comes to a satisfying conclusion. The characters are really likable, especially the relationship between Momiji(The heroine), and Kusanagi(...). Momiji is the clumsy but brave girl(Unlike other magical girls), while Kusanagi is the hero who comes to save the day,(...). One cannot help but laugh when he peeps at Momiji's pantys under her skirt, one can get a good kick out of that.
If you are an anime fan who has good taste, then get Blue Seed when you can, you won't regret it.
Great Series!!!!.......2003-12-11
This is a must see anime i bought the boxset and it was really good... Other good animes are Sailor Moon, SuperGals, Tenchi,Sakura Wars, Cardcaptor Sakura, Mao-Chan,Inuyasha, Ranma1/2 and others lol.... But this is a must seee...
BEST EVER.......2003-08-19
I think that Blue Seed is 1 of the best japanese anime i ever saw. i think it has the whole package for a perfect anime. it has romance, comedy, and action packed and many other emotions or something like that. i'm also glad that this anime stays on 1 topic, not like the other ones i've seen that skip from 1 topic to another. My favorite character would have to be Momoru Kusanagi. For 1 thing hes very funny but serios at the same time. And another hes very strong and cute. i think the people who havent watched Blue Seed before, should because its very interesting and very easy to understand at first.
Blue Seed rules!.......2003-07-10
Blue Seed is an AMAZING series in many ways. I bought the first vhs volume 3 years ago and since then have enjoyed it. Although the art is usually far from perfect, that doesn't stop it from being on the list of my favorite anime ever! There are some amazing action sequences, but along with that, it will make you laugh, cry, and give you some shocking plot twists (which I will NOT spoil). The concept is X- Files meets Aliens meets your favorite sitcom (in most parts).
Parents be warned; the violence is not all that keeps this title out of the reach of young children. There are a few near-sexual situations and some panty humor. As for the better language, steer clear of the dub if you can't stand squealing heroines. I'd probably go for the sub even if that wasn't the case.
I won't reveal the plot for you, but I will tell you a few things. The leading character (no names mentioned; find out yourself) is done by a massively popular voice actress: Megumi Hayashibara. The humor fades later, and speaking of the humor, NO STUPID COMEDY CLICHES(thank GOD!).
And although the whole monster thing is a bit of a cliche, the monsters themselves are pretty original. If you want more humor later check out the 13 omake theaters.
Overall, I'd put it in the no. 2 spot on my favorite anime t.v. series list (putting it below the amazing Neon Genesis Evangelion and above the hilarious Slayers). My father even came to enjoy it, and if you LOVE anime or are a beginner, you'll adore it.

One of the most popular anime series of all time, Neon Genesis Evangelion offers interesting characters, sophisticated direction, and solid storytelling. A giant meteor struck Antarctica in 2000, devastating much of the Earth. Since then, humans and the mysterious aliens known as Angels have been locked in a deadly struggle. In 2015, scientists at the NERV Center in the fortress-city of Tokyo 3 are developing ways to combat the Angels, notably the Human Enhancement Project and the giant battle robots called Evangelions. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari, whose aloof father heads these research projects, is drafted to pilot Evangelion Unit 01. Shinji is a reluctant hero, as many mecha pilots are, but his reluctance is not just an arbitrary whim; it's rooted in his estrangement from his father. Shy and socially maladroit, Shinji displays a likable warmth the grimly taciturn teenagers in ordinary mecha shows lack. Rounding out the cast are Rei Ayanami, the silent, albino pilot of Unit 00; irrepressible Misato Katsuragi, who serves as a substitute mother to Shinji; technical expert Ritsuko Akagi; and Shinji's classmates Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida. Evangelion offers a dark vision of the future, but director Hideaki Anno presents it very skillfully. Episodes include: 1. "Angel Attack," 2. "Unfamiliar Ceiling," 3. "The Phone That Never Rings," 4. "Rain, Escape & Afterwards." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot vs. robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon

A dark and disturbing series.......2006-10-14
Perhaps the most violent anime series since 'Spaceship Runaway Ideon', Neon Genesis Evangelion (which interestingly means new genesis or the good news of the new genesis, after the Greek word for the Christian gospel which is 'evangelion' or 'the good news' ) is a deeply complex and dark series exploring the minds of several young children and adults in a post-apocalyptic world where they must defend the last of mankind against mysterious invaders called 'angels.'
Central to the story is a young boy called Shinji Ikari. Shinji is a anti-hero, a young boy who is so overcome by a weakness of will, by depression, acedia and alienation, he is unable to do anything on his own. As the series unfolds we find out he was abandoned by his father Gendo (now the head of a secret military organisation called NERV) and his mother died in a mysterious accident involving a giant robot called an evangelion.
We find out Shinji is one of the special 'children' who can pilot these robots and defeat the angels, which seem to be bent on finishing off humanity. Half of the world's population died in an incident called 'First impact', where a meteorite moving at close to the speed of light strikes Antartica and destroys the continent and melts all of the ice, leading to the Earth's axis shifting, immense floods and tsunamis, and wars using horrible weapons such as the 'N2 mine' which can destroy cities.
Shinji meets other characters, including Rei, a mysterious young girl, Azuka, a lively redhaired prodigy who speaks German, Japanese and English fluently (and is also a maths whiz) and the sexy Misato, a busty commander who takes Shinji into her care. Shinji confronts many difficulties in relating to all of these characters, due in part to his own deep flaws and also the clashes between his introverted nature and the more outgoing personalities of Gendo, Azuka and Misato, as well as the 'damsel in distress' Rei. While showing bravery, compassion, and love on many occasions, we also see the darker sides of Shinji's nature, including his repressed sexual desire for all of these women and girls, his Oedipal hatred of his father, his neurotic tendency to avoid responsibility, as well as dark rage, anger, hate, and his insensitivity to the pain of others (a scene in one of the later episodes where Misato, who has protected and given him so much, is crying after hearing her beloved boyfriend die, approaches him for some compassion and comfort, but Shinji backs away and spurns her, is very telling of all of his weaknesses as a person).
As the series progresses we venture deeper and deeper into the fragmented and tormented psyches of all of the characters, and some dark truths are uncovered. It seems that NERV is being controlled by a secretive organisation called SEELE who is bent on bringing about the end of humankind through 'third impact', while Gendo has plans for his own. All seem to be involved in a project called the 'Instrumentality' project, which aims to transform humanity from its dead end state where all are seperate beings living lives of pain, suffering and isolation to a complete humanity where all individuals are remerged with each other, all other life, and the Godhead. SEELE appears to desire to bring this about on man's terms, not those of the Angels, whose aim appears to be to unite with a being in the depths of the NERV base called Lilith, and bring about the End on their terms.
The series concludes with the defeat of the angels, the destruction of NERV and the death of all main characters, either in the mind or the flesh. The final episode appears to be where Shinji ventures inside the depths of his concious and unconcious mind seeking the final answer to his existence, which he finds paradoxically in his own being and existence; by knowing himself Shinji finds he knows All and in so doing has the power to make whatever destiny for himself he chooses.
The series, while dark and depressing in many ways, is also very interesting and worth watching and reflecting on its themes. The journey inside to find God and the answer to existence is a timeless truth acknowledged from world religious and philosophical traditions as diverse as Philo and St Augustine in the West to Buddha and Shankara in the East. Indeed St Augustine said when you look inside yourself (like another Greek Philosopher Plotinus) you will find God and also all possibility. When Shinji finds the Absolute it is a white formless nothingness, and the world comes into being through making choices as an individual being, negating some possibilities over some others. Then the world of multplicity and all its wonders and colours comes into being, and Shinji realises another deep philosophical and mystical truth; the world does not only make you, you also make your own world through your own free will and its choices. 'I think and I will, therefore I am' was Augustine's maxim and Shinji also discovers this truth by looking within. Shinji encounters various possibilities ranging from a dull fantasy world where every petty desire of his is met to a more complicated world containing pain and contradiction and suffering. Shinji learns finally it is not so bad to be yourself after all, and to accept and love himself, and in doing so, he will also be loved by others for doing so.
The whole series then is really a mythical allegory (told in 21st century cartoon anime) about the inner journey to self discovery. Anno uses various symbols and ideas to convey these in symbolic and mythical form; however Freudians, Jungians, students of mythology or followers of Joseph Campbell, students of mysticism, or philosophers will all recognise the diverse signposts and where they are heading. The final message of the series seems simple enough; know yourself and you will know All, but is also complicated and very difficult because it is so hard for us to see past the world and our distortions and biases we project on it because of our flaws and needs. To see things as they really are, we must understand ourself; but this is the most difficult and also the simplest task. I think Anno's challenge to us mirrors his own journey (he was deeply depressed while writing and directing the series) and like other creative artists, for Anno there is no compromise.
The series and its ending differ in the 'Alternate' Evangelion though I think the basic themes are much the same.
A Fascinating start to what appears to be an awesome Series!.......2006-02-13
I have never seen this show before, so I am coming to you a beginer with very limited Anime knowledge. I love this genre, however, I have only begone to dabble.
First off, the magnificent animation blew me away. The action was very gripping and the backstories really started to pull me in. I especially liked the Evangelion robot, and thought that it was a cool twist in the series.
The characters so far seem like your typical anime cast, unique and unpredictable as ever. I remember maybe two names so I can't really go into detail much further than that.
My only limited complaints would be that the english actor voicing "shinji" had a vocal range that was a bit too high for me. I know he's fourteen, but most of the guys I know sound a lot deeper than that, so it just bothered me a bit. Also, the fourth episode didn't really take you anywhere, but leaves you wondering "where the heck is this going to go?" and "is the next DVD worth getting?"
Well I can't answer either of these and I can only hope they will get better. I'll be updating each time I watch the next DVD so look for my comments!
SO far, I recommend this and look forward to watching more. Hopefully it will get better and really deliver!
Product Description Clarification.......2006-02-10
I am writing this in response to a review I read which clearly misrepresents the product. The aformentionioned review states that this DVD contains new scenes and is in fact a "remake" of this popular series. THIS IS CLEARLY INCORRECT. The product at hand is simply a re-mastering of the original series. Therefore, if you want better picture quality and better sound quality, this is where to get it. Additionally, as mentioned, each DVD contains commentary from people involved with the English voice dub, some of which are interesting, some less. The last two DVDs in the Evangelion Platinum series also contain the directors cut versions of four episodes as seen previously on ADV's directors cut DVD releases, (albiet remastered here.)
That being said, this is the favorite anime series of many people, myself included. Hopefully this is of some help.
HERE I GO AGAIN.....HERE I GOOOOOOO AGAAAIINN!!!.......2006-01-09
Ok there is something wrong here, I swear. First of all please give a negative review some ratings in order to be the first somebody reads because if somebody buys this anime based on the stars he will be very dissapointed. I bought "THE BEST ANIME SERIES OF ALL TIME" only by seing the high reviews. So many people can't be wrong...can they??? hahahaha!
How can't people give this anime such high ratings? I don't understand. There is no plot. NO STORY. It's ok for a series to have a start, a story to follow and an ending. Its ok to have some gaps, some minor character development problems etc and still be mediocre. But if it has no beggining, nothing in between and certainly no ending then what???? Is this follow the masses or something?
The first episode was something and I thought (besides some elements that portraided what is to follow) that this must be a good series. From the second episode and further on....nothing. Nada!!!
If somebody argues and says that it has a great story, the aliens attacks (or something don't know what) and we have to save the world. Ok. No problem. Let's say it has a great story, maybe I am stupid and I don't understand it. Here comes the most dreaded aspect of this series.
How can a child, teenager, adult or even an infant cope with, -attach to-, understand, sympathise, get in the shoes of the character?????????????????? The characters in this series have serious mental problems and my only understanding is that people who like this anime have serious mental and psychological problems. Where can I begin? The main character? I don't really wanna get into the details I could write a whole essay. I don't care If you like this anime or not. And I would never as a teen attach to a character with a low self esteem, @%#@%% mind, whose mother had suicide or something and his father hate him (the stereotype signifies some other sexual orientations but they kept it simple in the anime LOL LOL). Moreover, the masculine types in this film are females! and with great social and psychological issues here!!
So parent who want to buy this for your children beware. P Ratings can be deceiving.
How can I watch Robotech when I am 12 and now that I am 27 still loving it? How can Trigun, Captain Harlock and other anime make sense and Evangelion not?
You deserve what you get so if you like this anime by all means do. Just think why you like it besides "the great animation" and "the great remastered edition". If you ask me the guys who created it ( who started the first 2 episodes and then said lets make some more) knew the great marketing tool that amazon is and did a really good job in writting reviews. If my review won't be here in 2 weeks this will be the proof of it.
ps (the mental problems that the characters in this anime have still amazes me....it should be rated at least R)

The new Eva Unit 03, piloted by Shinji's friend Toji, mutates during its initial test and becomes an Angel. When Shinji realizes another human being is inside the menace, he refuses to attack it. Using an override circuit, Shinji's father takes control of his Eva and rips the 03 apart. Horrified and disgusted at this brutality, Shinji quits as an Eva pilot--until a new and more powerful Angel strikes at NERV headquarters. Seeing his friends Asuka and Rei overcome, Shinji returns to defeat the deadly new foe. But his Eva goes berserk, attacking and devouring the Angel. As it grows in power, the Eva partially absorbs its pilot. Drifting through semiconsciousness, Shinji confronts memories that recur in variations, like an aria by Philip Glass. Characters in other, popular mecha series never confront these moral dilemmas. The youthful pilots in Gundam Wing adhere to a warrior code that extols heroism; they have few qualms about slaughtering their foes. Shinji knows that warfare is not a noble calling, and that causing the death of a human being is a horrifying prospect. His ambivalence about his role as a pilot forces him to analyze his troubled relationship with his remote and brutal father and how that relationship has warped his self-perception. Episodes: 18. "The Judgment of Life," 19. "A Man's Fight," 20. "Form of the Mind, Form of the Man." Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up for robot versus robot violence, nudity, minor profanity, and sexual situations. --Charles Solomon

the best out of them all........2006-04-30
I have to say that evangelion is one of the most original animes out there. but what I don't get is that the whole franchize started in 1999, and now about 6 years later it is know starting to grow. I mean so far they cam out with directors cuts and completly remastered versions of the whole series AND adult swim is now showing it (although ut is really late, they should have donedis in the first place).
anyway like I said be4 this is the best out of all the DVD's. the thing that really disturbed da F*** out of me when I first saw dis 3 years ago was the battle between Eva unit 01 and unit 03. this was the most violent battle of the entire series, cuz unit 01 rip the sh** out of unit 03 blood was rushing through the land and also flyin al over the place. And dats just the first episode, the second one is just as violent if not more, at the end they finally reveal what an evangelion truly is, more than just a biotechnologocal robot, but a killin moster and u will see that when Unit 01 really goes beserk and eats out the leavin hell out of an angel. the last one simmers down a bit and shows the more confusin parts of the series when Shinji is trapped inside of unit 01 literally. O yeah finally a lil sex action between Misato and Kaji. this is one volume of evangelion u can't afford to miss.
Holy F******g S**t!.......2005-08-05
Ahem, yes, my title is less than eloquent, but this volume blew me away. I was actually saying those words out loud over and over as I watched the first and second episodes. The behavior exhibited by Eva Unit 01 caught me completely off guard. Without spoiling anything (as the editorial review has done), I will say that the violence in this volume was more believable because such savagery has not yet been present in the series.
The thirteenth and fourteenth Angels attack. They are strong. The Evas are no match for them, being literally torn apart. The bastion of NERV headquarters is no longer able to prevent being penetrated by the Angels.
Not as believable was the final episode, where all characters emerge unscathed from tremendous attacks and explosions, and Shinji's "soul" is trying to be salvaged by Major Katsuragi and NERV staff. It would have been even more realistic if one of the chosen children had died. (Honest, I am not spoiling anything).
There is a hot sex scene between Misato and Kaji. You can't see much, but you can actually hear them knocking boots. I'm not kidding. Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 0:6 contains a mere three episodes, but what episodes they are. What are you doing reading this review? Go buy this DVD! Better yet, buy the whole series!
Best...Anime...EVER.......2005-03-11
I have never been a huge fan of Japanese animation (or anime). However, upon purchasing the original release of Evangelion a couple years back out of curiosity, I have to say that this show is by far the best. I have since watched Cowboy Bebop, a few of the Gundam series, RahXephon, and some others, and none of them come anywhere close to Evangelion (though Cowboy Bebop is pretty cool too, I must say).
To those of you who have seen and loved it, you know what I mean. To those of you who haven't, all I ask is that you check it out. Evangelion is full of twists and turns at every corner which will keep you guessing up through the end. All the better is that while this is going on, you get to see some very cool giant mecha VS giant monster battles.
However, the mecha action is by no means the point of the series, so to those of you who live for Gundam, or other shows where the giant robots seem to largely be the point, this may leave you feeling a little cold. To those who are looking for a very complex story which just happens to include mecha, then I can think of nothing better.
False labels.......2005-02-26
The last couple Eva Platinum DVDs have been falsely labeled. In the review it says that Episodes 18-20 are on this disc, while in reality they are on disc 5. The episodes on this disc are 21, 22, and 23.
Don't get me wrong, the reviews are great. They're just for the wrong disc. Maybe Amazon will catch the error and fix it. Maybe.
BLEEEEEEED!.......2003-09-09
Ouch! These 3 episodes were hard to watch the first time around. They were very disturbing, because the violence was absolutely mind numbing and gory.

In "The Birth of NERV," the filmmakers offer the viewer glimpses of the main characters' childhoods in scenes that hint at the sources of their problems and sorrows. And the penultimate episodes are dominated by sorrows at NERV, the organization that handles the Earth's defenses against the invading Angels. Asuka has grown so hostile, she can no longer bond with her Eva. After being badly injured in battle with the 15th Angel, she's removed from the program she lived for. As Commander Ikari insists on keeping Shinji's Eva in "cryostasis," Rei is left to face the serpentine 16th Angel alone: rather than be overcome by it, she destroys her Eva, the Angel, much of the surrounding landscape--and herself. Shinji is shattered by her disappearance. After decoding a message from the murdered Kaji, Misato forces Ritsuko to reveal to her and to Shinji the hideous truth about the creation of the Evas. But Misato, Shinji, and Ritsuko are only pawns in the larger game being played by the ruling cadre of the sinister SEELE organization. The 16th Angel has been vanquished and, according to the predictions they have derived from the Dead Sea Scrolls, only one remains to appear. These fragmented episodes showcase the singular mixture of Christian symbolism, sci-fi action, and Eastern mysticism that has made Evangelion one of the most widely--and hotly--discussed series in the history of anime. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up: robot versus robot violence, minor nudity, and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon

A Truly Unique Formula- a subjective finale.......2006-03-22
No movie or television show in the entertainment industry has done what Hideaki Anno has done with the finale of Evangelion. What the director attempted- and succeeded- was to compose a conclusion from which the viewers can draw multiple "truths".It is designed to go along with the moral lesson of the series- that people should think for themselves and not always depend on others for answers.
For example, one view is that the closing scene indicates that Shinji has broken free and has chosen to continue living in the real world rather than the fake paradise of Instrumentality. This conclusion can also be arrived at by studying the similarity of dialogue between the series' conclusion and the theatrical conclusion (in which Shinji also rejects Instrumentality). Again, however, it is left up to the viewer.
Another complex plot factor is the enigmatic character Kaworu Nagisa. In more than one instance, he behaves in a manner that seems to indicate homosexuality, yet the creators insist that he is not. So why does he act the way he does? The evidence makes it rather simple: Kaworu apparently loves Shinji- along with all humanity- unconditionally. He is also the "final messenger" of Adam, and he has been incarnated in human form. Finally, Kaworu gives his life for the sake of humankind. Ring a bell?
Given this evidence as well as the fact that Evangelion takes hints from Christianity, it would make sense to conclude that Kaworu's role was inspired by Jesus Christ.

I made the mistake of thinking I was gyped out of some of the episodes when I bought the Platinum Collection boxed set (which has "Collection" disks 1-6). So I bought Platinum Collection 7 thinking I would now have the director's cuts of some more episodes, but it turns out the boxed set just consolidates Collection disks 1-7 into 6 disks. Amazon.com let me return it, but I had to pay for shipping. Oh well, lesson learned. I thought you all might learn from my mistake.
Greatest Series Ever!.......2006-03-05
How could people not like the ending?! Sure, it was different, but that doesn't make the show any worse. Don't miss this final DVD. (...)
WARNING -- Do NOT purchase if you already have the boxed set!!!.......2006-02-23
FINALLY!!! To clarify once and for all:
Platinum Collection 7 contains four episodes--
#24- The Original Version
#24- THE DIRECTOR'S CUT
#25- The Original Version
#26- The Original Version
There is NO director's cut for episodes 25 and 26. If you already purchased the Platinum Collection Boxed Set, then you already have ALL of the episodes that are on this seventh disk. For some reason they organized the single disks differently than the Boxed Set, and therefore there are seven seperate single disks and only six disks in the Boxed Set.
DON'T buy this disk if you are looking for extra episodes that they didn't squeeze into the Boxed Set. The Boxed Set contains all the original episodes of the series, and it also contains the director's cut for episodes 21, 22, 23, and 24. There's nothing else available anywhere.
The original end of the series (episodes 25 and 26) was unsatisfactory to many fans, and so the director reworked the ending in the form of TWO movies. They are NOT included in the boxed set. You can buy them seperately, or they also come in a two-pack box. The first movie is called "Death and Rebirth," and the second movie is "The End of Evangelion." They are both excellent films, and serve as an entertaining and thought-provoking alternative to the original ending of the series.
Needless to say, this series is the best that anime has to offer. All the incredible action and animation is perfectly complimented by a mix of intricate characters and philosophies. Neon Genesis Evangelion is as much about tackling the nature of the soul as it is about giant alien creatures getting killed by giant robot things. It's wonderful.
Tries alittle too hard to be amazing, but it's well worth the money.......2005-10-30
One person told me they felt it's a shame that Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has picked up NGE because it would be "casting pears before swine, the swine being the Inuyasha [addicts] that make up A.S.'s Anime fanbase" While I do enjoy IY, I wholehartedly agree. NGE is exquisite, complex, sophisticated, and tragic, filled with psychodrama and intimate personal emotion. It's closer to Karen Finley or Spalding Gray than George Lucas or Jet Li. I'm positive they'll pull it after episode 6 for lack of pyrotechnics.
THAT BEING SAID: This DVD is a wonderful addition to any fan's collection. Fantastic video quality, and the audio work is (while a bit over the top at times) wonderfully enriching to the experience, even on my measely 2 Radio Shack speakers. OK, so there's no gay interaction between Shinji and Kaworu in the Directors Cut of 24. No matter. This longer version with mild spoiler is fantastic! The bonus 30 minute rough cuts of 24 and (sort of) 25 are sans dialogue, and dirty as all heck. For hardcore fans, it's pure gold.
... then there's the comentary on 26. OK, good, so they got the dub director and an "Evangellion Lecturer" to do the commentary. And it's VERY good from begining to end. But isn't that the EXACT thing they did for the EOE commentary? Are the original GAINAX staff and Japanese voice actors under some strict contract not to ever speak about the show? Come on, there must be ONE who speaks fluent English with time on their hands. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they did it. The comentary is fine and provides a tangiable plus well beyond filler on the DVD feature list. But then there's this UTTERLY STUPID extra video of just those two talking about the show for 13 minutes straight. They already elaborated plenty on the commentary track, but now they just sit and prattle on about how great the show is with nearly no editing. They just plopped a camera down, recorded them talking, then transfered it straight to the disk. IT'S MONOTONOUS, and particularly Public Access.
Does that mean this isn't worth it? HARDLY! I'm just warning you that along with the limited edition m&m's, godiva chunklets, and orange Kit Kats, there's some pennies and apples in that Halloween bag.

Brash new Eva pilot Asuka seems to take a sadistic pleasure in deriding shy, melancholy Shinji. When the two of them are required to fight as a unit to destroy an invading Angel, she moves in with Shinji and Misato, complaining all the way. After practicing to music, they win the battle with a mecha version of a rhythmic gymnastics routine. Asuka volunteers to take her Eva into an active volcano to capture an Angel in its chrysalis stage; she's nearly killed when it escapes and has to be rescued by Shinji. After the volcano adventure, the pilots and Misato take a well-earned rest at a hot springs, where Shinji discovers the principal of thermal expansion can have embarrassing personal applications. Asuka also insults Rei, but all three pilots have to work together to defeat a huge, spidery Angel that secretes a corrosive acid in episode 11, "In the Still Darkness." A mysterious power failure that occurs during the Angel attack points to the actions of Shinji's father, Commander Ikari, who ruthlessly pursues his private agenda. All three episodes display the strong storytelling that has made Evangelion one of the most popular anime series. Not rated; suitable for ages 14 and up for robot versus robot violence, brief nudity, and minor profanity. --Charles Solomon

Must have series.......2005-05-12
If you're into Anime, you need this whole series. It's very well written, great score, great fight scenes, character development...
This is only disc 3, so you will need the rest of the series! ;-]
Three Exciting Episodes.......2005-03-03
Neon Genesis Evangelion Collection 3 only contains three episodes (#9-#11), but these episodes have character development, thrills, and surprise - humor! I laughed out loud a couple of times during the last episode of this DVD. Not grim, as were the first two DVD's, Collection 0:3 is the DVD that finally got me to appreciate the simple yet unique animation and music of the series, and that got me to like the series enough to recommend it.
Three more Angels make their appearances. The outcome was truly uncertain in every episode, as the NERV personnel are truly challenged with the ingenuity of the Angels, which learn from each one's mistakes and evolve. Logically, the odds are eventually against NERV and the citizens of Tokyo 3. The angel in the second episode really took my breath away when it made its first appearance - or rather, was discovered.
The bellicose Azusa was annoying when first introduced in Collection 0:2. But here, I could really relate to her as she lashed out at Rei in episode 11, calling Rei an "egotistical b****." You can see she is not as brave as she appears to be. I look forward to learning more about this character.
Look out for the extras. The character profiles are more than informative - they hint so much they are almost spoilers.
Better and Better!.......2004-05-01
This was my favorite DVD until I reached 0:5, mainly becuase it made me feel even more sorry for Shinji. The next Angel appears but it has two "hearts" so Shinji and Asuka must learn to fight as one to defeat both cores at once. This means both children have to SLEEP TOGETHER (what could happen there?) and wear tanktops and possibly short-shorts (I'm not sure on that)! They defeat it eventually with their combined strength but the action doesn't end there (nor does the comedy)!
In the next episode, Asuka is refused permission to go to Okinawa with her class by Misato. Asuka, throughly ticked off, feels she isn't treated right. In a pool, Shinji tries to understand physics. Asuka gives him a college crash-course (seeing how she finished college that year) which is actually a lesson on how when an object is heated, it gets bigger. (...)
During the rest of the episode, Asuka has to defeat an Angel in a volcano and in the third episode, all three Children have to defeat an acid-emiiting Angel above NERV HQ.
In all: this is the continued standard of the first two and doesn't lessen their quality at all. Extras still suck but that's enough to put up with when you're watching the Best Anime in My Humble Opinion!
A warning against the English dub........2003-04-19
First of all, I have to give this DVD two thumbs up, as it brought me back into the anime circle of things. It's an excellent set featuring three (yes, just three -- sad, I know) excellent episodes of an excellent series. You won't regret buying this item.
However, I STRONGLY recommend you view it in Japanese with English subtitles. The voice acting is EXCELLENT (yes, that's my adjective of the day ^_~), and the dub pales considerably in contrast. If you understand Spanish, I encourage you to view the episodes in it -- AFTER you watch them in Japanese. In particular, I'm complaining because of the changes in the characters' voice tones. That alone can kill the essence of the story. It's not that the voice actors did a bad job -- on the contrary, I rather like the dub cast. It's just that sometimes the lines are read... wrong, to put it simply.
And if that doesn't help at all, this will: Asuka's "Back roll entry!" and "Hello! Guten mortgen!" sound MUCH cuter in Japanese. ^_~
"Your innocent eyes as yet have no idea".......2002-11-08
On this third collection of Evangelion (episodes 9 through 11), Asuka commands most of the attention. Which is no surprise, considering that the young woman from Germany is still looking to prove she is the best of the three pilots. Her interplay with Shinji and Rei shows that her overweening pride is simply a mask to hide deeper insecurities, yet her fierce bravery is undeniable in these episodes.
The first of the three tales finds Asuka and Shinji pitted against an Angel (Israphel) who can magically duplicate itself when it is under attack. After a failed first effort, the two EVA pilots must learn to coordinate their efforts perfectly. Considering how little they like each other this may be harder than destroying the Angel. It certainly is funnier.
Next, NERV scientists discover an Angel embryo (Sandalphon) deep in the lava of an active volcano. Asuka, deprived of a chance to go on a class trip, is determined to destroy it on her own... If she can just get over the embarrassment of her special heat-resistant suit. Misato's determination puts Asuka in severe danger and the outcome is in doubt to the very end.
The final episode finds NERV headquarters in darkness due to human sabotage. Without power, Shinj
