Not much jazz spoken in this 1980 version of the Jolson classic, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings) and starring a very tentative Neil Diamond as a cantor's son who would rather sing commercially than in a synagogue. The soundtrack is tedious, the portrait of L.A.'s music industry preposterous, and Diamond (despite his talents as a singer-songwriter in the real world) can't help but look like a speck on the wall in the presence of Laurence Olivier, who plays his father. --Tom Keogh

Does it get any better than this? Canadian torch singer and pianist Diana Krall is in perfect form in this two-hour Paris concert, recorded in December 2001 shortly after the release of her CD The Look of Love. In her band, guitarist Anthony Wilson and bassist John Clayton get the lion's share of attention, but the entire ensemble (including lush strings from the Paris Symphony Orchestra) provides flawless support for Krall, whose skill on a Steinway is as impressive as her smoky interpretations of vintage standards and ballads. Inspired by guest conductor-arranger Claus Ogerman, Krall can surprise with subtleties (like a delicious hint of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" in her closing of "All or Nothing"), or glide into solos with a master's flair. Matching the music beat for beat, the camera coverage and editing are intimate without being obtrusive, making this a bit of jazz heaven here on earth. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Recorded live at the Paris Olympia on December 1, 2001, Krall's classic style blends equal parts artistic vision, hard work and determination. The British Columbia native began playing piano at the age of four and now has five stunning albums behind her. She made her debut with the critically acclaimed Only Trust Your Heart and the album topped the Billboard jazz charts for the most of 1998, earning Krall a Grammy nomination. She went on to win a Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy for 1999's platinum-selling When I Look in Your Eyes and became the first jazz artist in 25 years to be nominated in the Album of the Year category.

La calidad de audio, vídeo y dirección de cámaras es simplemente de lo mejor, es una compra con 200% de satisfacción garantizada.
Great DVD!.......2007-01-16
We bought this for my grandfather for Christmas since he's a big DK fan, but the whole family watched and loved it. She's such a talented artist and has an incredible voice!
Krall-Live in Paris is the Next Best Thing to Being There...maybe better!!.......2007-01-15
Diana Krall is truly amazing...one of the best Jazz Pianists I know of and a voice & style that is unique in all the World. This is her first live concert recording from Grammy winning Diana Krall, recorded at the Paris Olympia Theatre winter 2002. The concert is classic, with 90 minutes of the best of Diana's mastery of keyboard with her mainstay Quartet- Anthony Wilson (guitar); John Clayton,(bass); and Jeff Hamilton (percussion) enhanced by guests John Pisano, and Paulinho Da Costa. Of all the Krall albums...this DVD counterpart of the CD...with 17 songs (4 more than the CD release) is a "must have". With intimate video angle shots..you will feel you know Diana and the team at the end of the concert!
A Wonderful Combination of Krall At Her Best!.......2007-01-11
Even if you're "on the edge" when it comes to liking Diana Krall, you need to add this DVD to your collection. Everything from the material, to the guys in her group, to the Paris orchestra, to Al Schmidt's great recording prowess, to the unobvious video capture...it's all here.
Perfect for your big screen and big sound system...and it swings!

- Neil Diamond... songs that touch our hearts!.......2007-05-13
Neil Diamond plays the roll of Yussel, the son of a Jewish Cantor who is expected to follow the traditional role of five previous generations of Cantors, dedicating their lives to guide a congregation through music.
As he seeks his own individuality, he defies his father, played masterfully by Sir Laurence Olivier, who is very unhappy to see his son attempting to step out of the role he was "born" to be, for to have received such a voice from God... has to mean that he must be a Cantor at the Synagogue.
The relentless pursuit of his dream, takes Neil Diamond from New York to California, leaving behind his wife, a woman he grew up with and was supposed to be his companion for life.
But the wife does not follow the husband's dream, she was quite happy with all she had, a school, a Cantor for a husband, and a role... center stage in the lives of the families that formed the congregation of their synagogue.
In California, Neil Diamond meets Lucie Arnaz, playing the role of the vibrant, go-getter young woman who, upon hearing him sing for the first time, knows she is meant to see him achieve his dream.
They fall madly in love and together set out to make a popular pop singer out of Yussel. At some point the wife comes out to California to try to take him back to New York and some of the lines between these two women are simply superb. When the wife, played by Catlin Adams asks Lucie Arnaz about the relationship that is taking place in California... and how far it has actually gone, Lucie replies "I offered him my body and he settled for a pizza."
But Neil Diamond stays in California and one day is visited by the father who dreams of taking his son back to his beginning... back to continue the family tradition of being a Cantor. The son tells the father he must stay, and when the father sees the new woman in his son's life, he rips his clothing, a tradition to communicate that for him, his son is now dead!
In the end, the family is reunited, but some of the scenes between father and son are priceless jewels of attempting to step out of traditional roles.
A dear friend of the family visits Yussel and asks that he return in his role of Cantor for the festivity of Yum Kippur. His father is now too old and too ill due to high-blood pressure to sing. He says that Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the Jewish day of repentance, and reconciliation. So... there is no better time like the present for father and son to reunite.
When Neil Diamond returns to the Synagogue, he delivers some of the best lyrics of this movie... the song is deeply moving.
The movie opens and closes with the timeless classic "America" a song that for all of us, immigrants, reaching US soil in search of liberty, opportunity and the pursuit of happiness, this remains the most moving music of all.
As with Neil Diamond the best part of the movie are the songs, and here we get the best of Neil Diamond. Hava Nagila, Adon Ojom, You Baby, Love on the Rocks, Amazed and Confused, Summer Love, Hello Again, Acapulco, Songs of Life, Jerusalem, Kol Nidre "My Name is Yussel" and America.
We are fans of Neil Diamond and have never missed a concert when he has visited South Florida. This newly acquired movie is and shall remain... best in class in our collection. Don't miss it!
EXCELLENT! Very uplifting, 5 star performances, Top Music.......2007-03-08
Neil Diamond is BRILLIANT in this performance, and moreso with the musical score. Excellent, excellent show, you'll want to watch again and again

I thought the movie was really good. Have always liked Neil Diamond. I saw the movie years ago, but wanted to purchase it and watch it again. The
songs in the movie were so good that I purchased his greatest hits CD.
One of the 20th Century's Great Rock Stars.......2007-01-25
This is a great film simply because it showcases one of the best performers the rock age has spawned. Neil Diamond is a great composer and a great performer. The story line has been told twice before (Al Jolson and Danny Thomas), yet this film is by far the best of the three. The audience feels his energy both in the film and in the theater. If you are a Neil Diamond fan you simply have to have this work in your film library.
The Jazz Singer- 25th Anniversary Edition.......2007-01-25
Excellent film, This film is almost a parallel of Neil Diamond's life.

High concept and high class, An American Classic is a worthy visual complement to Tony Bennett's 2006 duets CD of the same name. The notion of pairing veteran artists with a variety of singing partners is nothing new, of course (cf. B.B. King and Frank Sinatra, among many others), but this one goes a step further; under the direction of Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and his team, Bennett appears in what's described as a "docu-musical," faithfully re-creating a variety of performance settings much like the ones in which the 80-year-old singer has appeared in the course of his long, fruitful career. Thus we find him on a concert stage with Barbra Streisand ("Smile"), in a nightclub with John Legend (a swinging, uptempo "Sing, You Sinners"), in the studio with k.d. lang and trumpeter Chris Botti ("Because of You"), on a '60s-style TV variety show with Diana Krall (a classy "The Best is Yet to Come"), in Vegas with Elton John ("Rags To Riches") and then Michael Buble (an amusing "Just in Time"), and so forth, on up to Bennett's triumphant shot on MTV Unplugged with Christina Aguilera (no jazz singer, but she keeps most of her excesses in check on "Steppin' Out") and the inevitable "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (Bennett with piano accompaniment only). It's all very respectful, well staged, and entertainingly choreographed, but if this 45-minute cavalcade has a significant shortcoming, it's that it mostly lacks fire and spontaneity; the only time Bennett cuts loose is during an audio-only "I Got Rhythm" heard under the various DVD menus. Viewers may also be disappointed that Sting, Bono, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, the Dixie Chicks, and several others on the CD do not appear here, and it's a notable drag that not a single one of the composers or arrangers of the material is identified. Bonus features include a "making of" documentary and other featurettes. --Sam Graham

Product Description:
TONY BENNETT: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC is a ground-breaking television event that takes us on a musical journey of this legendary entertainer's life. Re-creating the venues of Tony's career, from the downtown Greenwich Village club where Tony was discovered, to the Columbia recording studios of the early 60's, from rat pack Las Vegas to Carnegie Hall, Tony will be joined for each show-stopping number by the myriad of superstars that appear with him on his Duets album. In a bold re-invention of the form, each set piece was filmed as a small movie by an Academy Award-winning team, lead by director Rob Marshall (Memoirs Of A Geisha, Chicago.) Seamlessly woven throughout the program will be introductions and narrative insights. This event invites us to celebrate the life of who Frank Sinatra called "the greatest singer ever." As the special ends, Tony Bennett will take the empty stage, this time alone, and deliver his signature classic, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco."
Customer Reviews:
Great production, great choreography, great performances!.......2007-05-12
Before I purchased this item, I thought I would only enjoy a few tracks by my favorite artists. But, it kept me enthralled all through the playing time. Personally, I bought this one because I like Barbra Streisand. But, wow, all the duet performances are so great. I've watched it twice now (in only 2 weeks). And I think I'll still enjoy it some more times. I think this DVD can be played at your home parties for the enjoyment of your valued guests.
Living Legend!.......2007-03-27
First, I give this four starts and not five only for the brevity of the program. But 40-odd minutes still offer many opportunities to appreciate what this 80 year-old can do! The creative program was directed by Rob Marshall and includes choreography (Tony even dances a bit) and visuals that live up to his Chicago accomplishments. Being something of a purist, I have to say I was initially skeptical of the "guest list." Each musician rises to the challenge, and the songs alternate between touching and flashy. Tony shines in each tune, an effect heightened by a full orchestra and elaborate sets. The film quality is excellent and vivid as is the sound recording. I found myself watching and re-watching sections over and over again -- you will, too. The extra features (including the "making of" documentary) are very interesting, too. This project was clearly a work of love for all involved. What a fine way to celebrate Tony's career.
Great Buy.......2007-03-26
I had caught the tail end of this concert when it was on tv. I enjoyed what I saw and heard, and It was definately what I had expected. Very good singing by Toney B's guest and the incomperable Toney B was excellent as always!!!!!!!! He still has his pipes at 80!!!!! Totally blew me away!!!! The concert is more of a mock tv show. Though I did like this format, it lacked the enthusiasm of those old dean martin tv shows. The director should have had more interaction with Tony and his guest singers. It would have been fun to see him talking about jazz music, with the modern day crooner, Michael Buble , for instance. All in all this is a great dvd definately worth buying, with the performances with Christina Agulara and Michael Buble standing out!!!!
cancel the CHEEZY dancers -you don't need em + won't miss em.......2007-03-20
I am giving four stars because I dont waste my time writing negative reviews- so a four star review means I have to diss something. My stomach was turning watching the cheezy and totally gross dance scenes- feathered fans and top hats and canes- PUHLEEZE !! None of these vocals are enhanced in any way buy these gyrating midriffs with the same old sorry meaningless cliched moves and the horrific non flattering outfits- they look like pole dancers in an atlantic city off the beaten path porn palace. Have I made my case?
Other than that the songs chosen were interesting, everyone does a masterful job singing - but I couldn't watch this tape again. These 2006 scenes just makes one all the more nostalgic for the neon lights of the old time dimly lit smoky jazz clubs when musical craft was king- I bet tony wishes that this style was still reigning as well

Description
This is the first-ever collection of rare videos from Tim Buckley's live performances, including thirteen full-length songs. The footage spans his entire career, from 1967 to 1974, and includes unreleased video of interaction with Buckley on The Steve Allen Show (1969) and on WITF's The Show (1970). This DVD also features interviews with Larry Beckett (co-writer of many songs with Buckley), Lee Underwood (Buckley's guitarist) and David Browne (author of "Dream Brother: The Lives of Jeff and Tim Buckley").
Customer Reviews:
At Last.......2007-06-27
I've been a fan of the amazing Tim Buckley since 1974 and have only ever seen two clips of performances, and both of those quite recent. It's almost spooky to finally get a generous serving of (just about) every TV performance Buckley made in his short life.
I won't rave about Tim Buckley, because if you're reading this you're probably already a fan. As for the DVD, just a couple of things:
It's great value for money, with lots of songs and between-song bio banter from Tim's lyricist Larry Beckett, guitarist Lee Underwood and the author of a book about Tim and Jeff Buckley, David Browne, PLUS Beckett and Underwood 'review' the albums.
It looks like a lot of love went into the project, with its booklet of pics, decent transfers and even the sound rendered in fair 5.1 surround.
The one downside is not having a more extensive set of interviewees; as interesting and articulate as the three mentioned participants are, it can get a bit wearying seeing them blather on (sorry guys).
Still, overall, this is just amazing: finally, the best vocalist to ever come out of popular music (and one of the best songwriters) captured properly on DVD. Phew.

Much much more than nostalgia.......2007-06-20
I was just beginning my life long passion with music in '67 when I ran across Buckley. His early albums mesmerized me and I've never been without some incarnation of the first three since, either LP or CD. When LORCA came out I went with it up to a point, but admit I totally lost the thread of where Buckley was going by STARSAILOR. This DVD, which presents a very nice span of clips from throughout his career gives a new appreciation to all phases of an artist who pushed the creative envelope hard (achieving damn near commercial suicide in the attempt). When I watched the later era performances I felt guilty for abandoning Buckley in his later phases, but it takes a maturity to appreciate this material I didn't have at the time. Now I find it inspiring, magical, transcendent.
The DVD is a "must have" for anyone with an interest in this amazing talent, and it's great to finally see these performances in high quality.
Buckley for Anyone.......2007-06-08
Whether you're a longtime devotee, or are coming to Buckley through his late son, Jeff, or are curious after all the hype, this DVD will enlighten and entertain you.
Tim Buckley's power of performance lives on!.......2007-05-29
When I read the previous Amazon reviews of Buckley's "My Fleeting House," I thought that perhaps the writers were judging the DVD based on their nostalgic feelings. However, I must admit having purchased and watched it this weekend that they are correct. The DVD, which weaves together about a dozen televised performances by Buckley with interviews with collaborators Larry Beckett and Lee Underwood, as well as a writer named David Browne, presents a compelling argument why this singer-songwriter still deserves our attention. The DVD does a good job of presenting a range of Buckley's work, from the introspective and still popular "Song to the Siren" to his more experimental, less accessible tunes such as "I Woke Up." As several of the interviews indicate, Buckley almost seemed at times to sabotage his commercial appeal and fan base in pursuit of his muse. For those who remember Buckley's work, as well as for those who only now are discovering his talents, this DVD may be worthwhile. Hopefully other filmed performances may surface.
Outstanding..........2007-05-29
I have been into Tim Buckley since the summer of 1985, and it's nice that this DVD may be the first in a series of new things (e.g., the TB estate is working on a "rare and unreleased" CD collection). I have a VHS copy of many of these performances, so the video quality is a big improvement.
After reading the David Browne double-bio of Tim and Jeff Buckley, and Lee Underwood's memoir of his time working with TB, it was interesting to see them both "host" this DVD with Larry Beckett, TB's writing partner.
A few constructive comments:
1.) It would have been preferable to have other performances in the DVD instead of the "Rock Revolution" segment, since it's not the entire run-through of "No Man...", even though the context is important, since it was a prestigious program. "Happy Time" is a great tune, but the Dutch performance alone would have been fine. The 1980s MTV-style "Who Do You Love" that tries to synch unrelated film to the audio is pretty bad in comparison to the rest of the performances (think the "Gloria" video from the Doors). The unrelated film looks great, so let's hear the audio to that! Also, we see TB interact post-performance with Steve Allen and his wife...can we see his performance? If you can license the Monkees clip, Steve-a-reeno's estate will probably make it happen. My VHS has more of the Boboquivari show, and a performance of "Honey Man" (a tune which Underwood discusses) from the Whistle Test, either of which would have been welcome on this DVD.
An interesting story in TB's career is his run-in on the Tonight Show with Alan King mocking his appearance. The way TB handled the incident versus how he later said he did is an insight to his personality, and this would have been a good change from the relatively similar takes from Underwood, Beckett and Browne. Carson's estate is putting out retrospective DVDs...can this clip be found?
2.) As good as it was to watch Browne, Underwood and Beckett, it would have been nice to have included Judy Buckley, Taylor Buckley, Herb Cohen, Carter Collins, or others from TB's life and career. This is a legit DVD release from the TB estate and Third Story Music, so involvement from a more diverse set of people would have been possible and made it more interesting.
3.) A little editorial control would have been helpful. A few times Beckett says the same thing two or three times in the course of an answer, and Underwood gives five or six examples of how one person can like some kinds of music and not others. Also, after the Monkees performance, Browne describes in detail what we just watched. Browne also describes TB's sex appeal three different ways in succession. These aren't the worst things in the world, but since we have only three people on screen, it's a noticeable meandering.
4.) There are a few talking portions of TB on TV shows with Joseph Heller, the Allens (mentioned above), and people in his audience. Browne mentions TB's film acting in "Why?", and a clip would have been a good illustration. TB was a very naturalistic actor (you can find his scenes from "Why?" on the Internet), and watching him discuss issues of the day from 1970 you get a sense of his manner and style.
Great work otherwise, and I look forward to future releases.

Jazeps.......2007-05-11
this is the best video (from two 2003 year dvd and 2004 year dvd) - because there are all the best hits, "come away with me" and others, and the video is teken by good taste (good video operator and editor work), it is pleasure to watch, not like dvd from 2004 year. the bad thing is that both video are in very poor quality, video compresion makes it impossible to get good sight when loked on big tv, or projected on the wall.
sory for my weak english:)
Great DVD!.......2007-03-11
Great DVD! Norah seems a bit shy in this DVD, but that does not take away from the concert at all. I am hoping the wife and I will get to see her live some time soon. Until then, I will be watching this DVD.
Don't believe the negative critical folks.......2007-02-25
I must say I had to hesitate buying the DVD after reading how "scared" she looked. How loud the drums were. How poor the sound mix was. How Norah needs to take lessons on how to be a star front person. The musicians don't improvise.. blah blah.
It sounds like your sitting in the House of Blues. I appreciate the DVD quality, both visual and sound. Could the drums be mixed a little lower? Yes, but come on team, it works for the setting.
I wasn't a huge Norah fan, but am more appreciative of her after buying the DVD. Love her voice, and a sweet personality displayed. If I were 15 years younger... I will be purchasing the latest release as well!
Music matters.......2006-08-06
Yes, Norah seems to be bit nervous and not too confident...but it is not distracting or unpleasant. It is just her, and her live performance, not actress in a movie blockbuster. And since it is music (and singing) that matters - this DVD deserves 5 stars. Kind regards, Mario.
music to my ears.......2006-06-15
some of your reviewers are correct about here being nervous and voice getting lost....who cares! On a decent stereo with 5.1 capabilities the sound of music and here voice for a live concert is phenomenal. I paid $14.00 and it was worth every penny!

Diana Krall: Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival is a portrait of an already-accomplished musician in the process of evolving into a great artist. Always a fine jazz pianist, an expressive singer, and a capable interpreter (mostly of the Great American Songbook), Krall spent little time developing an original voice prior to her marriage to Elvis Costello and her CD The Girl in the Other Room, which features multiple songwriting collaborations with Costello as well as more adventurous choices in cover material (Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," Tom Waits's "Temptation"). That 2004 recording is the centerpiece of this concert; fully nine of the 13 selections here, including the Waits and Mitchell songs as well as five Costello-Krall compositions, were drawn from it. Purists may lament the lessening of the straight-ahead jazz element in Krall's music (indeed, with its simple major chords and countryish lilt, the original "Narrow Daylight" will inevitably invite comparisons to Norah Jones). But Krall and her excellent band still swing mightily (cf. an extended version of the standard "All or Nothing at All") and improvise like the seasoned jazz pros they are. It's a heady combination: Krall is at least as good an instrumentalist as her contemporaries; add to that her singing and now an interest in songwriting that reflects the influence of pop music as well as jazz, and you have a genuinely unique talent. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
Try Peggy Lee instead.......2007-03-11
I agree: the rapid cutting is annoying. This is supposed to be a jazz concert, not a rock concert.
Also, I don't get these songs, either. Pretentious stuff, it seems to me. The woman can play the piano, but her singing is lacking.
I say give Peggy Lee a listen, try Shirley Horn, Billie Holiday, Dione Warwick, Etta James, Dalida, Jeane Manson, Kelly Flint (of Dave's True Story), Nana Mouskouri, Dusty Springfield, Carmen McRae...I could go on.
frantic camerawork throughout the concert.......2007-02-16
frantic camerawork throughout the concert. There are so many camera angles fading in and out that it gets tiring to watch. I just wished that the camera would sit still for at least 10 seconds. I get the feeling that it was directed by someone who has only directed 30 second commercials.
Reason alone and rightly so for yet another junk dvd. someone start a school for these idiots
Flights of Improvisation Suits Montreal Festival Expectations.......2007-01-29
I anticipated this live recording and was duly rewarded by Diana's longer improvisational breaks and generally sharp differences from the polished product on the Live in Paris album.
If you prefer club jazz, wherein the lead artists in a combo create longer solo excursions between more-or-less tidy returns to melody and chorus, then, like me, you will appreciate the elbow room afforded Diana at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
Now I know for sure something that I had been curious about all along. Diana has said in the past that she will hold back a new tune from her set until she perfects her performance of it. There is a style of jazz performance that plays each tune note-perfect on tour (Glenn Miller is the simplest example), but as the Ken Burns JAZZ series stated with refreshing directness, if you're a jazz player who never makes a mistake, you're playing it way too safe. That was always my impression of groups like the Glenn Miller "orchestra."
It is understatement to say that jazz festivals like the venerable one in Montreal are the perfect places to let one's hair down. Duke Ellington found that out decades ago. You better have chops at Montreal Jazz, and Diana's combo understands the expectation. These are not the tidy album-track arrangements played on tour for the jazz hits crowd. Here, those of us who would really like to hear Diana and her bandmates "go long in the breaks" get our wish.
If you think the Live in Paris CD, great as it is, is just a tad too well calculated, too clean, a bit too rehearsed for your appetite, then here you'll find one version of an antidote.
Here's a DVD live show wherein Diana gets to "go off" according to the parameters I've sketched above. The songs are from her set lists as you can see, but her lead improvs, and those by the rest of the band, are something you can't hear on the other more formal media. I recommend this confidently to those who are curious to hear Diana and the guys jam in the blues and jazz improvisation stratosphere without the net.
Note: You may actually be chagrined by Diana's blues leads, since blues leads have become a staple of rock'n'roll over the years, but blues are part of the jazz heritage, and Diana is still in charge of her instrument. See what you think. I enjoyed it, yet I hope next time she allows more jazz moves in her blues riffs.
Diana Krall DVD.......2007-01-26
The DVD was just as advertised and very enjoyable. The quality of the DVD and the music were excellent. It was a very good price and worth every penny.
Diana Krall Live at the MOntreal Jazz Festival.......2007-01-10
Wonderful concert. Wish I was there, but this is the next best thing.

Description
Following it's successful broadcast on NBC this past Thanksgiving, the critically-acclaimed Tony Bennett: "An American Classic" was released on Blu-ray December 12, 2006. Created and directed by acclaimed director Rob Marshall (Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha), An American Classic is a ground breaking show staged as a contemporary reinvention of the variety special. In this "Docu-Musical", Marshall and his entire Academy-Award winning creative team take us on an emotional musical journey of this legendary entertainer's life by re-creating the seminal venues of Tony's career: from the 52nd street swing club to the early Columbia recording studio; from the classic TV studios of the '60's to the "rat pack" Las Vegas stage; from Carnegie Hall to his triumphant performance on "MTV Unplugged". Throughout, Tony performs his greatest hits while joined by many of the superstars that appear with him on his recently released, platinum-selling Duets album. This show invites us to celebrate the life of who Frank Sinatra called "the greatest singer ever." As the special ends, Tony Bennett takes the empty stage, this time alone, to deliver a definitive version of his signature classic "I Left My Heart In San Francisco".

Norah Jones's growth as a performing artist since she burst on the scene in 2002 is apparent on Norah Jones and the Handsome Band: Live in 2004, her second concert DVD (following Live in New Orleans, released in '03). The gifted singer-pianist-songwriter is still something of a reluctant headliner; personable if not exactly effusive (and seemingly bemused by the adulation), she's self-effacing and winningly unpretentious onstage. That goes for the music as well, as Jones and her empathetic band (now including guitarist Robbie McIntosh, formerly of the Pretenders and Paul McCartney's band) put on a tasteful, understated show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Songs from her second CD, Feels Like Home, are favored, along with a version of the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Why" that's received with near-reverence by the audience. Jones's choice of cover material, including tunes by John Prine ("That's the Way the World Goes 'Round"), Tom Waits ("The Long Way Home"), and Gram Parsons ("She," which is among the several bonus tracks; other extras include two videos and three "mini-documentaries"), is also admirable, but it's when her various guests show up that the show approaches genuine transcendence. Among them are Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, who harmonize beautifully with Jones on Townes Van Zandt's "Loretta," and the indefatigable Dolly Parton, whose duet with Jones on bassist Lee Alexander's bluegrass-flavored "Creepin' In" is the undisputed highlight of the show. Radiant, ebullient, and in great voice, Parton is a star, and Norah defers to her accordingly. The only problem comes when Jones and company have to pick up where Parton left off, and in truth, it takes them a while to recover. --Sam Graham

Special Guests include Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, and Richard Julian.

Jazeps.......2007-05-11
this is the vorst video (from the two 2003 year dvd and 2004 year dvd) - because there are not the best hits, "come away with me" and others, and the video is teken withot taste (bad video operator and editor work), it is not great pleasure to watch, not like dvd from 2003 year. the band plays very good, but their behavior did not fascinate me, it seems to bee too artifical. the bad thing is that both video are in very poor quality, video compresion makes it impossible to get good sight when loked on big tv, or projected on the wall. so, i am a big fan of the old dvd, and highly recomend it - ("live in new orleanes 2003"). i just bought both because they were cheap:)

Great DVD! I am hoping the wife and I will get to see her live some time soon. Until then, I will be watching this DVD.
Not everyone is Cher. Let us give thanks........2006-05-30
Norah is just Norah on this dvd and that is way better than 99.9% of the singers doing concerts and/or dvd's at the moment. There is not a single lightning flash or even a smoke grenade. It is just Norah and a terrific group of musicians doing what they do so well.
I found no problems with the sound (referred to by others) on my 6.1 system. First-rate purchase imho.
Snorah Live..again...the girl needs to stay in the studio.......2006-04-04
Ms. Jones continues to lack any spark onstage. Can't her management persuade somebody like Lyle Lovett to teach her how to connect with her audience and be a performer, because Ms. Jones clearly hasn't a clue about stage presence. I've seen her live and this DVD captures the impersonal, mechanical blandness of her concerts - only her concerts are even less engaging...at least the DVD production folks added whatever production spices they could.
The Sun Can Touch The Moon!.......2005-09-07
Is it necessary to address Jones's talent? It's been lauded by kings, queens, servants, sailors, landlubbers, and plebian music lovers everywhere. And on this DVD it blossoms with each track performed, whether she and her handsome band are in front of an audience or on stage in an empty auditorium. You presume much should you believe she is aware of her singular charm, her extraordinary sensous appeal, or her exotic beauty, all of which are mixed perfectly with the last remnants of her lost adolescence. You may not be aware of the smile on your face, or the fact that your foot is tapping to the music, or that you're feeling happier than you were a few minutes ago, but you'll know that you are witnessing someone and something very special. Listen to Nora Jones and her handsome band and you'll begin to believe that the sun can touch the moon!

SUPER CONCERT.......2007-06-13
THIS CONCERT TOOK ME BACK TO THE 70'S & 80'S, AND IT ALSO TOOK ME BACK TO THE OLD WAREHOUSE CONCERT DAYS BACK IN NEW ORLEANS. THE BEST CONCERT I HAVE SEEN WITHOUT LEAVING MY HOUSE. :)
Carlos and Band at their best!.......2007-03-12
As a Santana fan from the 70's, I had forgotten just how powerful their music is. But "Sacred Fire" reminded me why I wore out their old 33s. For Santana fans, this is an anthem. I've been told that you can't wear out a DVD, but I'm going to try!
Great performance!.......2007-03-10
The best Santana DVD you can buy!
For you collectors get SANTANA Shizuoka Night Japan 2006 if you can find it. It's as good as Sacred Fire. Please release this one to the public.

2 great DVDs!, but be aware..........2005-08-25
that they have both been issued separately, so avid Joni-watchers may inadvertently re-buy thinking this is new stuff. If they are new to you though, you will not be disappointed. The PBS special fills in a lot of history for those of us who weren't in the music scene in the late 60s and the soundstage concert is filled with great music and many special moments. Enjoy!
Two Awesome DVDs.......2005-01-12
This release pairs the long awaited Joni Mitchell biography from PBS American Masters "Woman of Heart And Mind" (2003) with the 1998 soundstage concert video "Painting With Words and Music". Both are excellent, and a must have for lovers of Joni's music.
