INCREDIBLE SWORD FIGHTING FILM !!.......2007-07-03

The Weinstein Company has to be commended for releasing "The One-Armed Swordsman" on DVD.The video and audio restoration that went into this release is truly amazing.The film is presented in it's 2.35:1 Widescreen format and enhanced for 16x9 televisions.This is without a doubt the best version of "The One-Armed Swordsman" I've ever seen.The video transfer is just spectacular and the colors are sharp and vibrant.The sound is clean and crisp albeit in mono.The sound options include original Mandarin or English dubbed version and choice of Subtitles.The special features I found most interesting were the Interview with Jimmy Wang Yu and the Stills Gallery and Trailer Gallery.Sadly the commentary of Quentin Tarantino listed on the rear cover under the special features section of the DVD is missing.Martial Arts fans will be amazed by the incredible quality of this release and the non-stop blood filled action.

OK if you have never seen this movie and are interested in classic kung-fu movies, by all means get this release, the quality is great. My complaint is that the Weinstein company lied about the special features. I already owned a great region 3 copy of this film, and was surprised to see that the new American release had commentary by Quentin Tarantino, which is stated on the package. I know that he is a big Shaw bros fan and was interested in hearing his insight on the film. I could care less about the film scholars opinions as they don't really state anything a fan wouldn't already know. Well the DVD does NOT have commentary by him, and my purchase was completely pointless. This review is to mainly to warn others out-there like myself who are huge fans that might also be considering purchasing this version for that reason.

When they say they don't make 'em like they used to, they're talking about 20th Century Fox's exhilarating The Mark of Zorro, starring Tyrone Power as the caped one, Linda Darnell as his love interest, and Basil Rathbone at his scurrilous best as Zorro's nemesis. More textured than the 1920 original with Douglas Fairbanks, this 1940 version has Don Diego/Zorro (Powers) returning from Madrid to defend his father and rally the caballeros (noblemen) against Los Angeles's corrupt new governor (J. Edward Bromberg), intent on taxing the peons to death.

If this all sounds like an Old California redo of the classic Adventures of Robin Hood, that's because it is. Powers has a field day as Don Diego, the "fancy clown" betrothed to the governor's niece, Lolita (Darnell). Don Diego the effete snob performs silly parlor tricks, peers through pince-nez, and yawns disdainfully at one and all. Power's cowardly alter ego is so believable, his transformation to masked superhero becomes all the more thrilling. Imagine Captain Pasquale's (Rathbone) shock when, in the film's brilliantly choreographed showdown, this annoying fop turns out to be a world-class swordsman.

Director Rouben Mamoulian, known for great period melodramas, does a skillful job of alternating garrison intrigue with big action scenes, including a nighttime ride that climaxes with Zorro on horseback leaping off a bridge. In the romantic highlight, Lolita confides her innermost desires to a suspiciously worldly friar. The first-rate supporting cast includes Gale Sondergaard as the governor's treacherous wife and the frog-voiced Eugene Pallette (Friar Tuck in The Adventures of Robin Hood) as a padre in cahoots with the masked one. Technically, this retelling rates an unqualified "Wow!" The cinematography, obviously influenced by Goya, makes full use of chiaroscuro shadows, and Alfred Newman's Latin-flavored score is irresistibly rousing and romantic. --Glenn Lovell

Under Mamoulian's sure-footed direction, only Power could one-up Douglas Fairbanks with this rousing remake of the 1920 silent classic--still the zingiest and most technically dazzling "Zorro" of the bunch. Power is so adept at shifting from the slightly doltish Don Diego to the heroic masked avenger that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. Among the fabulous supporting cast, Rathbone stands out as Zorro's loathsome nemesis, Bromberg and Gale Sondergaard are delightful as the ruthless regents, and Darnell is winning as the love interest. Daring horseback rides, thrilling duels, exquisite cinematography...What more could you want in a swashbuckler?

Age of the TRUE swashbucklers.......2007-06-13

While I perfer my "oldies" in the true black and white format, it was very good to see a very good colorized version. I heartily recommend this movie to anyone who is in search of real romantic adventure. The cast is perfect and the acting superb. Highly recommended.

First, I'll agree with all the other posters on the quality of the story and acting. Swashbuckling, action fun in a way that simply doesn't get made anymore. If you enjoyed Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, you'll like this one too - two of the actors from Robin Hood even appear in Zorro in almost identical roles.

So, now to the annoying feature that lost this particular version a star: that stupid anti-piracy ad in the beginning of the colorized version that you can't skip past. I appreciate having the option to watch either the color version or the B&W, but if I have to sit through that 30-second torture every time I want to watch the color version, I think I'll stick to the B&W one.

EL ROBIN HOOD DE CALIFORNIA.......2007-05-14

Rouben Mamoulian's THE MARK OF ZORRO, adapted from The Mark of Zorro, a book Johnston McCulley wrote in 1919, is one of these films I discovered between the age of 10 and 15 on TV and which are the reason why I love movies so much. The action is so fast that you'll forget after five minutes that THE MARK OF ZORRO is in black and white.

Linda Darnell was 17 when she starred in the film, the exact age of Lolita Quintero, Zorro's love, and she still ignites the screen. Basil Rathbone is the villain by essence, the guy you'll love to hate and Tyrone Power plays to the perfection the double role of Don Diego Vega/Zorro, the coward and the hero. I showed the film last night to my children (9 and 12) and they simply loved it. As I did some 35 years ago.

Wow! What a story, what acting, what adventure. The color was gorgeous, have not watched the B & W side, probably won't either. Linda Darnell was perfect for the leading lady to Ty. No complaints come to mind. When purchasing, get the dvd with the special features and the 6 lobby card replicas. You won't be disappointed!

Egh...Not a big fan of the site anymore, thought I'd give the DVD one last good watch...this video was really disapointing.
The video has no consistency, it's messy, and devoid of purpose and entertainment.
However if you are looking for cute girls and decent music...look no further. That's about all you will take with you from this DVD.

I really enjoyed the interviews most of all, especially the ones with Missy. If you're into Suicide Girls for the fact that you think it's awesome porn, you might want to skip this. This video is geared more toward the people who don't look at SG as porn, but more of an art form, a way for one to express themselves. This video is definitely more of a documentary... Wait, no, a 'Rockumentary' covering an entire tour.

Again, an awesome video that could be used for educational purposes in my mind.

This DVD has an excellent soundtrack and is a beautiful piece of art. But, most of all, this DVD is an insight into the cultural revolution that is the Suicide Girls. Watching the realization among the girls as they see how significant their work is to both fans and the country will you in awe just as much as the beauty of their work.

henry fonda- one of the finest actors ever. terrific in grapes of wrath. this movie deals with the mob mentality. the mob jumps to convict and execute three hapless, full of pity, and innocent men. may we never fall into these circumstances.

The theme here is based on William's Wellman's stern, uncompromising study of mob rule, set in the Old West... It is one of tragic misunderstanding, the sort of witches brew of error, impatience and intolerance, which must have often characterized Western rough justice...

Mob fury surrounds a little cattle-town like a fever... Most citizens seem only too eager to join a manhunt for the murderer of a rancher... Henry Fonda and his sidekick Henry Morgan have to go along with the tide, if only for the fact that, as wanderers passing through, they are not above suspicion themselves...

The unofficial posse, under the leadership of Major Tetley (Frank Conroy) comes upon the campfire of three suspects...

On the basis of circumstantial evidence, Tetley exhorts the mob into an on-the-spot trial... Despite the pleas of a few dissenters, a guilty verdict t is quickly reached and a triple lynching is performed...

Then, riding back, the lynch-mob gets the news that the rancher is still alive and the real villains have been taken...

"The Oxbow Incident" was never a box office success, but was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture... However the film makes its point, as well as it ever did... It's not only about the social injustice of instant justice; it's also about human nature, all its oddities, frailties and the perils therein... It's often said that it laid the beginning of the psychological Western... That's perhaps too big and ambiguous a claim... What it does possess to a marked degree is keen observation, and a fine distinction that is never difficult to see...

The Ox-Bow Incident is one of those seminal films where everything about it looks right, feels right, and sounds right. The acting, directing, and script are almost more accurate than we can stand, given that the main thrust of the story proves how methodically misguided people can be.

Henry Fonda and Henry Morgan play two drifters who happen into a Western town reeling from the murder of a popular and powerful rancher. They join the town's posse, and catch three men in possession of the rancher's cattle. The posse quickly turns into a lynch mob, with Fonda trying to keep things calm and rational.
The story reveals the sometimes dark and disturbing tendency of society to react with haste and violence rather than with reason and mercy. Based on a true story and a best-selling novel, The Ox-Bow Incident is a cautionary tale, but it is also a mirror. One that is easier to break or ignore than it is to look at.

This is a fine example of the Hollywood of Old type of movie. It is timely for today since we are basically doing the same thing as the characters did to the three cowboys on the Trail. They, similar to us, act on the wrong information and hang the three cowboys. Later on they learn that no one was killed and the real men are in custody.

a group of researchers manage to capture the ghost of a young boy and try to figure out who he is and ultimately how one becomes a ghost. they believe they have discovered the answer but one by one they are being murdered by an angry spirit however this time around the spirit doesn't kill out of vengence she kills out of love for her son. nice twist on the angry ghost story.

A truly new concept!.......2007-06-21

I really enjoyed this film. I am a fan of Asian horror films but have gotten tired of the same "vengeful ghost" scenario. OK, so maybe this movie DOES have a vengeful ghost, but it's premise of capturing a ghost for scientific purposes is pretty original. It's a cool blend of sci-fi and horror and I would highly recommend it to Asian horror fans.

Suspenseful and immersive sci-fi, horror flick..........2007-05-21

SILK is a sleeper hit in Asia. I took a chance when I purchased the REGION-3 DTS Hong Kong release and man!, was I pleased with the decision. This is one of the best supernatural thrillers I've seen since SHUTTER, RINGU and THE SIXTH SENSE, and the best thing about it is it doesn't rely on the "WATERLOGGED,long-haired ghost". From what I heard the TARTAN release will use the same video transfer as the Deltamac release.

SYPNOSIS:(May have some spoilers)
The film is a mix of SCI-FI and the usual elements of ASIAN HORROR. A group of scientists led by Hashimoto, armed with a newly invented material called the MENGER SPONGE captures the energy of a ghost child. This invention financed/owned by the Japanese government, is quite malleable and can be used as a coat for walls, for camera filters and can be used as an eye-spray to allow the user to see Ghosts.
They enlist the aid of an agent named Ye Tung, a law enforcer from the JCCU, who can read lips and has a gifted eyesight, to assist them in unveiling the mystery of the ghost child. Hashimoto and his team lets the ghost child loose, so that,Ye, aided with the MENGER SPONGE spray, can see a strand of SILK that emanates from the supernatural child, this strand is the key to a mysterious power.
Ye tracks the ghostly boy and the strand to the horrifying truth of the child's death. Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous and for his own hidden agenda, Hashimoto,(and his team) decides to isolate him, but in doing so, they unknowingly unleashed the supernatural force in the other end of the SILK strand, a MUCH more POWERFUL, and MALEVOLENT energy.

This film really kept my attention for the whole 105 minutes. It doesn't have cheap scares, but instead relies on the plot to slowly unveal, the suspense builds up the closer you approach the climax. Each lead character is developed carefully. It is a story about love, hate and learning to let go, unlike most Asian horror flicks focuses on a VENGEFUL, Blood-thirsty ghost.

PICTURE: ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN(aspect ratio 1:78). The picture is nicely shot, sharp and smooth. The color pallette leans towards a "Green Bleach" hue, similar to most Japanese horror films. There are some video artifacts on some scenes, but not that noticeable. another very good video transfer from DELTAMAC.
AUDIO/SUBTITLES: Japanese/Mandarin- 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL and 5.1 DTS. The DTS audio is the way to go. You can hear all the creaks and whispers in a much fuller sound. The English subtitles are well executed, not perfect with some typos here and there, but not distracting and annoying.
SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted scenes, making-of, Outtakes, photo gallery, extra bonus.

This film is well-worth a look if you like SCI-FI Horror films. I saw this film 4-5 months ago(thanks to the magic of multi-region players), I'm pleased that it received a REGION-1 release this soon so people can see the quality films that come from Asia.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (for Horror fans)

All Alice Faye has to do is sing in her gorgeous full contralto (that is almost a baritone) and you immediately can see why she was 20th-Century Fox's biggest star during the war years: here she transforms a dull song like "Rhumba and Romance" into a little masterpiece while dancing with Cesar Romero and really kicking back. While skimpy, the plot of this very typical Fox musical is fairly efficient: Faye, a Macy's shopgirl, is the last holdout to sign off for liability when her cruise ship runs aground on a sand bar, so an executive of the cruise line (John Payne) has to squire her around Havana to make sure she has a good time. Along the way they run into an incompetent gigolo (Romero) and his spitfire girlfriend (Carmen Miranda, of course, since Brazil and Cuba were considered pretty interchangeable in the minds of 40s America). The costumes by Gwen Wakeling are quite eyecatching, and the lovedly and unusual model Cobana Wright, Jr., plays Faye's rival, and John Payne is at least very handsome; unfortunately the sets and backdrops are pretty chintzy,as was often per usual with Fox, and the songs by Mack Gordon are instantly forgettable. The only thing to really lift this above mediocrity is Faye, who is not much of an actress (though she does have fun with a New York accent), but who sings like a dream.

This movie takes you back to the days when Hollywood made Big Bright Splashy Wonderful Musicals! I doubt if these types of films could even be made today because of the costs of creating these colorful huge sets! Yes its a little corny but whats wrong with that? No WEEKEND IN HAVANA is not one of Hollywood's greatest efforts. And no, this Twentieth Century Fox release can't be compared to the musicals of MGM that were released at the same time. Still, it's one of those time period films that you can't help but enjoy.

John Payne is Jay Williams, a cruise ship executive, soon to be married and engaged to the boss' daughter (Terry McCracken played by Cobina Wright). Days before the wedding one of the company's cruise ships malfunctions and Jay is sent to placate the customers. He's able to make everyone happy except Nan Spencer, the Macy's salesgirl who has saved every last penny for the trip. To make her happy, he arranges for a trip to Havana and surprise: the two fall in love! Of course there are a number of twists and turns but we know they'll get together and we don't feel all that sorry for the boss' daughter. early in the story we know we're not supposed to like her. Viewers meet the hot Cuban singer/dancer Rosita Rivas performed by Carmen Miranda in all her glory and the lovable cad Monte Blanca played by Cesar Romero.

Part of the reason I love this film is it's just fun. The plot line is not complicated and we believe that a story that could easily be tawdry is innocent. The musical numbers may not be as well constructed as rival MGM would have done with the same story, but they still have an irresistible quality. Since most viewers will probably purchase the DVD to enjoy and not to over analyze, a corny story that can at times be a bit zany with musical numbers that are just enjoyable is great entertainment and WEEKEND IN HAVANA will be at home in any such collection.

This is one of the older Penthouse DVD's available, but it is done quite well. Andrew Blake directs 17 beautiful women through different settings and in and out of Satin & Lace - one of the better colletions for this type of release in my opinion.

May I introduce Carmen Miranda.............2007-06-01

DOWN ARGENTINE WAY has a simplistic and forgettable plot (Betty Grable is a wealthy young heiress with a penchant for raising and purchasing horses, and ends up in Latin America, falling for suave Don Ameche, yadda, yadda, yadda.). What makes this stand out is the musical numbers, and, of course, the entrance of Carmen Miranda with some of her most popular music (including "South American Way"). Though, this was Carmen Miranda's introduction and debut on the silver screen, in the United States, it wasn't her first film. Miranda made several films in her adoptive country of Brazil (she was born in Portugal). Though, she is charming here, I find it poignant to watch. Carmen Miranda's life was not joyful, though, it was hard to believe for many because she put a brave face on in the public eye and exuded a (rather forced) atmosphere of joy whenever she made an entrance in a film. Still worth a look! It's bubbly fun and Miranda does make you forget "in the South American way."

Carmen Miranda, known as "The Brazilian Bombshell", was the original Chica Chica Bum Chic gal of forties musicals - a large swash of Rousseau on the movie screens, a festive explosion of outrageous razzmatazz that may not have added much to culture but did add a lot to one's enjoyment of it...

Everything about this happy demon (except her height) was larger than life: her behavior; her struggles with the English language as it tripped its way into her head and out through her mouth in accents thick and hilarious; her eyes as they shrank into slits and lost themselves behind her cheeks rising and swelling through the effort required to pronounce her tongue-twisting lyrics at rapid speed; the continual motion of eyes, mouth, shoulders, hips, arms, hands, fingers and feet, the latter supported by elevated platforms that heightened her appeal, and the ever more extravagant gowns that have inspired nightclub performers ever since - garlands of sequins, bowers of living blooms around her hips and breasts, and orchards of fruit growing out of her turbans...

The total effect was that of some medieval fertility ritual goddess whose presence was a promise of fruitfulness...

Not Too Sophisticated, But A Lot Of Fun.......2006-12-02

DOWN ARGENTINE WAY is a fun movie, plain and simple. It's a lighthearted Romeo and Juliet-esque story with a not so tragic ending. Betty Grable stars as Glenda Crawford, the fun loving daughter of a well to do industrialist. She spends most of her days looking at horses and chumming around with her amusing Aunt Binne (Charlotte Greenwood). She meets Ricardo Quintana, the son of a horse breeder from Argentina. She falls in love with him and hopes to buy a horse from him, but the deal falls through when Ricardo realizes that she is the daughter of his father's enemy. He snubs her, she doesn't understand why, so she and Aunt Binnie travel to Argentina so that she can slap his face. Of course she slaps his face, and the film progresses as one would expect--the two fall in love and all ends happily. While the basic plotline is predictable, it's fun to see just how the film will be resolved.

Of course most people who buy this film are not all that interested in the story, and will overlook its flaws: bad Spanish accents, what would be considered derogatory stereotypes if the film were made today and a few confusing characters. The singing and dancing numbers are what musical lovers enjoy, and this has some great moments. For one, we see Carmen Miranda starring as Carmen Miranda. How the Brazilian Bombshell ends up in Argentina we never know, but she's at a nightclub and she's the city's main entertainment attraction and it's fun to watch. We also see the Nicholas Brothers dance a tap number that doesn't seem all that Latino in flavor, but it's the Nicholas Brothers so we really don't care, we are just amazed at how they can move as they do. There's also a great number involving Aunt Binne. She and her escort arrive at a street festival and everyone in the festival seems pleased that this well to do WASP from New York decides to sing a song about courting a senorita. Charlotte Greenwood's moves are comical and skillful and it's the sort of scene you watch over and over. Betty Grable and Don Ameche hold their own as the stars, and their musical and dance numbers are good too.

In the end, DOWN ARGENTINE WAY is an enjoyable movie with great musical numbers that make it worth the price alone.
