Robert De Niro gets top billing, but young Leonardo DiCaprio is the revelation of This Boy's Life, an astute, often painful drama of growing up in the 1950s Pacific Northwest, based on the autobiographical novel by Tobias Woolf. DiCaprio plays Tobias, a good kid with a bad boy streak but an unwavering love for his divorced mother (Ellen Barkin). "I want to be a better boy," he promises from under a greasy pompadour, and tries to prove it when she marries single father Dwight (DeNiro), a bully who parents through intimidation and humiliation. DiCaprio is magnetic in his first starring role, full of anger, hope, and confusion as he drifts back to juvenile delinquency, and his intensity gives the true story of survival and triumph its charge. DeNiro is frightening and pathetic as Dwight, and Dwight's youngest daughter is played by future star and vampire slayer Eliza Dushku. --Sean Axmaker

Realistic boys life story .......2007-04-01
I loved this movie. De Niro and DiCaprio play off each other great.I could watch this movie over and over.
Who raises you either makes or breaks you:a true, true story.......2007-03-09
If your childhood was idyllic and you had nice, supportive and understading parents, then you just may not get this movie. However, if you were forced to live with one parent who dragged you in to every bad choice, relationship and place, then this film is your life, as it was mine, and you WILL get it,only too well.Tobey Wolff's Award winning true life memoir is so gripping that even Hollywood could not have thought up something this fantastical. This is Leonardo Di Caprio's movie. As riveting as the likes of Chris Cooper and Robert DeNiro are as Ellen Barkin's "bad choices" in life, this film never strays from DiCaprio's amazing spot-on portrayal of a boy who is forced to survive the only way an abandoned child can. This film is not for the squeamish or weak at heart. This memoir-brought-to-the-screen will be therapeutic for anyone who must come to terms with their not-so-ideal childhood.SEE THIS FILM IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN THERAPY OR IN SOME FORM OF SUPPORT GROUP.There is a load to be learned from this film.5 stars is simply not sufficient.
Excellent companion films to this would be A LOVING FATHER (France),THE CELEBRATION (Denmark) , THE SEA (Iceland) , PIECES OF APRIL (USA),THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (USA) and any DICKENS NOVEL!!!!!
A+++++Film, Great Story & Actors,.......2007-02-13
This is one film that is superior to the book, although I like the book, too. Robert DeNiro is perfect as the very crude, sometimes funny, but mostly mean step-father. That he can play diverse roles with such conviction is amazing. Saint or sinner, he is always believable. The film captures the late 50's era and the precarious situation of a savvy, wily and very witty teen boy and his divorced & striving working mom realistically...and their journey to what the mother thinks will be a better life. There are both frightening and hilarious incidents...also, much courage and bravery. Ellen Barkin and Leonardo DeCaprio are excellent...so true and believable in their roles. I was rooting for them all the way. The movie led me to read the book, which then led me to read another book by the author's older brother, who went to live with the father rather than the mother and his harrowing experiences. This film should be seen by all troubled teens..I also see it as a warning to women with children who find themselves with an abusive partner. My only criticism is the implication that anyone who stays in a small town like Concrete and works in a factory or with their hands is a loser (not everyone can become a writer/teacher)...the important thing is that one can eventually escape and free oneself from a bad homelife or situation and not let it or other set backs ruin one's future or whole life.
This Boy's Life-ROCKS!!!.......2007-01-04
Wow...this was a great movie...I really enjoyed it but I wouldn't let young kids see it...but anyway it was really good...yay...
A new favorite of mine.......2006-08-06
This movie is absolutely incredible. I loved every minute of it. I think it's safe to say that Leonardo Dicaprio is an outstanding actor even at his young age. He and Robert De Niro make a fantastic pair of actors. 5 Stars!

You'll Get Over It.......2007-06-27
a young man who is in the closet is accidently outed by a
fellow new guy who is attracted to him
usual problems follow
his best friend stays loyal to him
would have like to see more of his new relationship
Add to gay movie collection.......2007-05-24
although in the french language and engish subtitles, this is an excellant movie for the young gay man. a movie for those of you who still have a questionable "faghag", non-homophobic friends and as with all families in the world, a not so perfect family. loved this movie.
Pretty Basic........2007-03-28
Although the movie was pretty basic it was still a good movie. Coming out was the only topic throughout the entire movie, it didn't include sub-plots like other gay movies it was just one story and that might have bored the movie down. Overall, I figured the movie to be lacking the intensity that other gay coming out stories involve but this one was just bleh. Everything was presented as if the main actor lived in Disneyland- he was outed, everyone believed the rumor, his parents found out, his girlfriend accepted and they all went about their life as if noting happened. He was accepted by his parents, his girlfriend still loved him, his best male friend still wanted to be his pal (which was a good point) the coach still treated him the same it was as if this story could be taking place in 2100 when being gay is just like global warming- everyone will eventually forget it's a problem and accept it. In the end all the stories concluded themselves, no one got shot, no one died and no one got hurt pretty good feel good movie if you want to come out and need some help.
Not easy.......2007-01-23
Not easy to assume oneself when issued from french working class. Simple story involving teammates, brotherhood, and the various reaction dictated by revanche, jalousy, envy?

"YOU'LL GET OVER IT"
Getting By
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
Today's wide gay audience has become more demanding and want to see movies that deal with important issues such as coming out. We are also dealing with issues like gay identity at younger ages. Coming out stories used to de4al with guys in their 30s but now we have stories of high school teenagers dealing with coming out issues. They once worried about puberty and acne and per acceptance. Now they seem to worry about tricks and sex. "You'll Get Over It" (Picture This Entertainment) is a French film that deals with the issue. It is not as literate as other gay coming out stories but it is an attempt to look at the younger gays and the problems they have.
Julian is a star of his school's swimming team and he has arranged hi life very nicely. In public he dates a lovely girl and in private he meets with the older Bruno. However his almost ideal situation begins to change when a new kid, Benjamin, sees right through what he is doing, They are immediately attracted to each others and when others see this rumors start to fly. While fighting, Benjamin accidentally outs Vincent and the damage quickly follows. Everyone seems to turn on Vincent and in just a few hours he becomes a social outcast.
This is the incident that causes Vincent to look for his own self-acceptance and a larger community. His quest for individuality and identity begins drastically in a gay bar and his sociological issues become more and more intense. It is here that the film becomes hard to watch as all of us have experience the same feelings. Therefore it is safe to say that there is nothing new in "You'll Get Over It" but I don't see a problem in watching what so many of us have been through. I do not think that originality necessarily means superiority. It is important for us to relive individual truths so as to make it easier to instruct others about the dangers involved. We do know one thing--in most cases we'll eventually get over it.
