The Intruder is the greatest irony of Roger Corman's film career. In 1962, after cranking out dozens of exploitation quickies and gaining recognition for his widescreen Edgar Allen Poe series, he put up his own resources to produce a serious work of drama on the explosive issue of racism and integration. Shot on location in a small town in Missouri, where he and his crew faced bigotry first hand when the locals found out exactly what they were actually shooting, the film went on to win rave reviews and film festival prizes and became Corman's first film to lose money. William Shatner delivers the most controlled performance of his career as Adam Cramer, a cool, charismatic white supremacist who rouses the smoldering white citizens of a small Southern town to mob violence on the eve of school integration. As the crowd slips from his control and events escalate, Cramer's true intentions are laid bare, and as he flails about in desperation Shatner's performance slides into near hysteria. There are few weak performances in the smaller roles and the film at times slips into didactic speeches, but Corman's strong direction drives home the film in powerful scenes and striking imagery: Cramer's incendiary speech on the courthouse steps, the deathly quiet KKK ride through the black part of town. By the climax Corman understands that controlled silence is even more terrifying than a mob's thundering cries. --Sean Axmaker

Time has been kind to Flight of the Intruder, a rousing aviation-action adventure that looks better now than it did to critics who panned it in 1991. Perhaps they were expecting a Tom Clancy-ish blockbuster (producer Mace Neufeld oversaw the Jack Ryan franchise), but director John (Conan the Barbarian) Milius had something potentially more substantial in mind. The first 75 minutes are pure Milius: Macho bluster, male bonding among ill-fated pilots and Naval bombardiers, and a Big Wednesday-like passion for dangerous fun. But Milius's favorite topics have sharper teeth here: He's made a scathing anti-Vietnam film that still honors the bravery of soldiers who do their job even when the job itself seems pointless. That's why ace Brad Johnson (why didn't he become a huge star?) and maverick bombardier Willem Dafoe plot a renegade mission, bombing a Hanoi arms depot with their low-altitude A-6 Intruder in the movie's pyrotechnical climax. Fringe benefits abound, including early roles for Tom Sizemore, Ving Rhames, and David Schwimmer in his big-screen debut, three years before Friends and looking like the dweeby grandchild of his Band of Brothers martinet. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars An very good book and a good movie..........2007-02-22

I am not qualified to discuss the politics of the Vietnam War and about 40 something other people have commented upon the story. Having said that the book was one of those that was hard to put down. The movie was pretty good but arguable not quite to the same level of excitment as the book. One thing that the movie really does a terrific job of doing is showing people just how formidible a weapon system the now retired A6 Intruder realy was. Not supersonic and not the prettiest thing in the air but certainly agile. The flying segments are well worth watching if you are a fan of US Naval Aviation. Sadly like the A7 and few others it never seemed to capture the media's attention like the F4 Phantom and the F14 Tomcat did. Which brings up another interesting question I have that resulted in the 3 star rating I gave. Wasn't there any other aircraft on Grafton's ship? All we see are the A6 intruders and in the end we also get to see some Sandy's go into action. But that is about it...

If you are a fan of flying movies see this...
If you are fan of Vietnam War movies see this...
If you are fan of Steven Coonts books see this...
If you are fan of any of the stars see this...
If you looking for a pretty good action movie see this...

It is not a boring film but the story could have been a little better written.

4 out of 5 stars Flight of the Intruder.......2007-01-21

Great military movie. It shows what airmen during the Vietnam War (or American War, if you're reading this in Vietnam) wanted to do - take the fight to the enemy. A great wish for the airmen that did come true on the big screen.

As a retired Air Force member, I can laugh at all the Naval antics on shore leave because today's military makes them VERBOTEN. Carrier Landings in bars in Angeles City or Olongapo no longer exist since the US military was ordered out of there. Still, the guys had great fun letting loose in this movie and then faced death when the time came.

In the scene where Willem Dafoe and his pilot have an avionics failure, it made me sit on the edge of my seat, because as a former avionics technician who worked on F-16s, I could feel the fear and subtle panic they were facing during battle. I always ensured my avionics components worked so our aircrews would not experience that sensation.

Note: the captain, who was trying the aircrew for disobeying orders, was Fred Dalton Thompson; he wasn't mentioned in the credits for some reason.

Great movie and storyline, superb antics by the troops on shore leave, and really cool aerial footage. A must add to your war film collection.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CARRIER AND BATTLE ACTION.......2007-01-10

A REAL GREAT ACTION MOVIE ABOUT THE NAVY AND ITS PLANES AND PILOTS.......NOT ALL FACTUAL BUT STILL A GREAT MOVIE

1 out of 5 stars Great Book - Bad Movie - Good Actors.......2006-12-23

My view is skewed. I was in VA-196 and flew with Steve Çoonts a few times as a B/N. His book captured our collective squadron stories and placed the A6A Intruder into the public eye. People would tell me about their experiences while reading the book...they did not know my connection to it. Steve wrote so well that they could smell the cockpit and sense the adrenalin. While the movie paralleled our actual experiences at sea and in port, it did not convey the excitement of the book. So, I was disappointed in my expectations and give the film a good try.
W. Stewart Tittle, Lt USNR 1966-71.

4 out of 5 stars A Righteous Movie about an Unrrighteous War.......2006-10-31

During the Vietnam war, many air crews were frustrated by the political nature of target selection. Real, worthy targets of military significance were put off limits to avoid annoying the enemy or the allies of the enemy. Instead, missions were sent against "suspected" targets like truck parks and staging areas more often than not, this resulted in the bombing of some innocent trees. That would be frustrating but not necessarily infuriating. What was infuriating is that crews were lost and killed in the missions to worthless targets.

In this story, one crew has had enough. After seeing so many of their friends killed for no apparent reason, they decide to do something that matters. They want to bomb a military target. They want to destroy SAMs, the surface to air missiles that are so dangerous to flyers. They know where to go. It is no secret that the SAM inventory is stored in a massive artillery park in downtown Hanoi. They decide to take it out.

The unauthorized raid is a success except when speaking in terms of careers. Even then, it seems, fate intervenes.

This is a story about comrades in arms keeping the faith with each other. Its not a great movie but it's a pretty good story.

Its also a credit to Danny Glover's acting skills. You would never know that he's part of the "I hate America" crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for "The Cage".......2007-05-17

The original Star Trek TOS pilot "The Cage" was the total embodiment of Gene Roddenberry's intended vision for Star Trek, before network tampering. One good example of this is the practical clothing for the women in "The Cage." They wore the same long pants and jackets as the men, which helped to elevate them above just being mere sex objects, to vital componets of the crew. Number One's (Majel Barrett) attire, for example. This attire was evident in the second pilot, as well. But I'm taking an educated guess that one of the conditions put forth by the network for Star Trek to be greenlighted as a series, was the women being transformed into mere leggy attractions, and relegated to waitress-like status, as evidenced by the impractical miniskirts they were required to wear in the series. Another requirement might've been a more pleasing, colorful asthetic look for the uniforms, and the sets, as evidenced by the brighter colors and lots of red and blues. And gone are the jackets, phaser holsters, landing party backpacks, etc., that were worn by Pike (Jeffery Hunter) and crew, in favor of the things we saw in the series, like phasers and communicators merely being stuck to a crewperson by velcro. I'm certain these changes for the series were not Roddenberry's idea. But "The Cage" is a great story, but it was enhanced even better when it was interwoven with "The Menagerie."

Not much to say about "Turnabout Intruder," except that it falls in with the many dull third season episodes. It was never one of my favorites. But it's "The Cage" that makes this 2-disc DVD worth a buy.

5 out of 5 stars And So it Ends, As It Begins!.......2007-03-18

And so we come full circle with this the final volume of Classic Trek. This volume is clearly the best one not only of Season 3 but also stands among the best ever among all 3 seasons. Hence, if you are picking which volumes to keep, this one comes under the "must have at all costs" category.

In the first episode, "The Turnabout Intruder", we get a Gene Roddenberry credited story about women's lib and the injustice of gender discrimination which leads to desperation among women as they struggle for what's right. This story is important as it comes at a time when women's lib was a far cry from what it is today showing Gene as a prophet of sorts in championing its cause way back when. I thought the acting was very good and even William Shatner's impression of a slightly effeminate Kirk attempting to suppress his feminine tendencies so as not to arouse suspicion among the crew as worthy of mention. While it may not be among the very best of all TOS episodes, it certainly ranks among the top of a very poor 3rd season though.

And now for the creme de la creme of the volume, "The Cage" in two versions no less with Gene Roddenberry himself giving the introduction and the final thoughts on the first version while I thought the second version was restored very, very well both in picture and sound quality too. I have no doubt that had Jeffrey Hunter stayed on and not died an untimely death in real life, he would have been the best Captain the Enterprise ever had; he is by far the best actor of the lot and I include Patrick Stewart as well. Overall, the acting of all the cast including guest star Susan Oliver, John Hoyt, Peter Duryea and the rest is exceptional. Even the aliens sent shivers up my spine from their eerie looks to their malevalent stares unlike any of the other aliens from future episodes. I personally think that this is ironically the best ever Star Trek TOS episode even if Spock is the only character that remains in future episodes.

As Gene Roddenberry has long gone to the next life, this volume is even more a collector's item as it has his thoughts on the episode and on the impact TOS has had overall up to the mid-80s when this was shot. Overall, this is a must have volume for all Trek fans and indeed all fans of sci-fi television everywhere.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars--even "Turnabout Intruder" cannot take the shine off of "The Cage"!.......2007-02-13

"Turnabout Intruder" is not worth reviewing, except to see how inconsistently the attitudes toward women were handled--compare Lester to Number One and Yeoman Colt in the pilot.

*

"The Cage" is two things. First, it is not the Star Trek that could have been, but rather, it is the Star Trek that was to be. All of the key elements are in place: Dr. Boyce is the same archetype as Dr. McCoy, Ensign Jose Tyler is the eager young space cadet that would become Chekhov and every redshirt, Yeoman Colt is just a strawberry version of Yeoman Rand, and Spock is Spock. If you squint, you feel like you are watching any other episode of Trek:TOS or TAS.

Secondly, this is what "Star Trek: Enterprise" should have been. When I heard that Berman and Braga were doing a prequel series, I immediately picture this episode's yellow and blue turtlenecks, the Buck Rodgers lasers, and the retro-future trans-warp décor on the ship. Like most people, I was let down with the slick and professional sets and costuming of the actual series. No! No! No! Keep the continuity of the Great Bird of the Galaxy! We love the quirky sets, post-Mod swinger costumes, and the cheesy special effects. "But pardon, gentles all, the flat unraised spirits that hath dar'd on this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object. . . . Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts." (Henry V)

*

"The Cage" is a reservoir--it both collects from the past, and dispenses for the future. In order to fully appreciate this series, you need to read Horatio Hornblower, Doc Smith's Lensman series, and the watch "Forbidden Planet." The last film was a key influence on the plot and setting. In both, we have a dying or dead alien race that was corrupted by its telepathic abilities and moved underground. Both have a saucer-shaped earth ship with hyper drive coming to the rescue, wit a beautiful woman (Altair /Vina) as a siren. Even the sets have similar pentagonal doors and arches. And don't get me started on the animation and special effects.

This episode shows that the concept of Star Trek was already firm in Roddenberry's mind. In addition to the above mentioned similarities, you have the quote-unquote progressive crew. The transporter assistant is Asian, foreshadowing Admiral Sulu. The navigator is Jose Tyler, blond, but with Hispanic ancestry. And of course, there is Number One, a female XO that paved the way for Robotech's Lisa Hayes. Nowadays some people criticize Roddenberry for not being politically correct enough, but considering the times, this is quite daring.

Additionally there is the personality of Pike. What we saw in "The Menagerie" was edited; we saw an introspective captain, with his doubts and fears. But when these snippets are put in context, we see that Pike was a tough tinhorn on par with Kirk--just replay the last line Pike speaks in the episode. Furthermore, since Pike is both velvet and steel, he is a better rounded person that Kirk ever was. I think it was this balanced quality that allowed Hunter to play Christ so well in "King of Kings."

*

There is one odd aspect to the episode, and that is the sexual subtext: the Talosians want Pike to breed with Vina. Nowadays we would just send the Greys to the local sperm bank for some free samples, or have Riker do a strafing run. But Pike does not do this--he has a sense of the sacredness of marriage, that a heterogamous couple is essential for both the man, woman, and the child. As the children of broken homes can attest, we seem to have advanced beyond Pike in this matter.

The Enterprise answers a distress call to the planet Camus II. A group of federation scientist are exploring the ancient ruins of a dead society. The Enterprise landing party finds only two archaeology team survivors: Dr Janice Lester and Dr. Arther Colement. Dr. McCoy diagnose suggested the survivors are suffering from Selenidium radiation poisoning. Janice deliriously mutters broken sentence fragments like, "I loved you", "I could have roamed the stars with you", "when I was with you at the academy, it was the first time I felt alive". Kirk does reciprocate telling Janice, "they would have fought and hated each other". Dr. Coleman explains that the Selenidium shield was weak and killed the team. Dr. Coleman distracts Mr. Spock and McCoy leaving Kirk with Janice; Janice activates a machine that magnetizes Kirk into a frozen state; Janice then switch life entity with Kirk. Janice attempts to kill Kirk but has her opportunity cut short, as the landing team return. Janice wants Coleman too kill Kirk but he tells her, "I won't be a murderer".

McCoy believes his medical authority is final. Coleman recommends sedating Janice-Kirk telling the team she is recovering. Kirk-Janice disagrees and excuses McCoy as the chief medical officer and replace him with Coleman. McCoy argues that Coleman has been rules as incompetent to server as the Starfleet surgeon general. Coleman loves Kirk-Janice.

Kirk-Janice commands the officer to change course and leave Janice-Kirk at Benecia Colony and ignore rendezvous with the USS Potemkin. Janice-Kirk believes "by the next mission she will be invulnerable to suspicion. " Janice-Kirk tells the confusion bridge officers, "time is of the essence"; Spock challenges the change in course decision: 1. indicating Star Base II has better medical facilities 2. The deviation would be equal to Benecia schedule 3. Star regulations demanded that a change in course be communication to HQ. 4. Benecia Colony has a primitive medical facility.

McCoy and Spock have observed the "emotional instability" and the ship crew is nervous about the change I the captains behavior. Spock syas, "the aberrant behavior rumors are spreading through the ship." McCoy forces Janice-Kirk to report for a medical examination. McCoy finds to physical evidence that anything is different.

Kirk-Janice awakens and attempts to tell about the life entity switch, but Janice-Kirk orders Coleman to sedate her, "the paranoia has been building for the last 6 months. Your are insane. Sedative is required"

Spock needs answers and wants to talk with Kirk-Janices. The security guards are loyal to the Captain and he has order no one will talk with the prisoner. Spock asks the guard if the rule has ever applied to senior officers. The security guard reasons that it means talking alone and accompanies Spock. Kirk-Janices pleads for Spock to Spock mind-melds with Kirk-Janice and believes she is Kirk. Spock tells Kirk-Janice, "evidence must be factual"

Kirk-Janice charges Spock with Mutiny and convenes a court martial. Evidence it presented and Janice-Kirk demands a vote. Rebellion starts with Spocks defiance of Janice-Kirk and he announces intent to resist the captain with any measure and means available. Scotty and McCoy plan to move against the Captain. Janice-Kirk calls for the death penalty against the two. A break convenes and Spock attempts to reverse the transference. Janices freaks and tells Coleman about the near transference. Coleman tells Janice-Kirk the only way to make permanent the change is to kill Kirk-Janice. Coleman again tells her, he can not murder. In on last attempt, Janice-Kirk attempt to poison Kirk-Janice and a physical fight starts, but the transference completes and Janice tells Kirk, "I wanted you dead. I'll never be captain now. You are as I loved you."

5 out of 5 stars The very first Star Trek story........2006-08-31

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz ("I Love Lucy" tv series) bought RKO and formed Desilu studios. It was Lucille Ball that gave the go-ahead for them to make the Star Trek pilot. Creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, went to CBS first, but they were already planning "Lost In Space".
This 1964 pilot was unsold and never did air on television in its entirety until 1988.
"The Cage" begins with Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) and science officer, Mister Spock (Leonard Nimoy) who is a vulcan (with emotions). Majel Barrett is Number One.
Captain Pike and his crew visit the Planet Talos, looks similar to Arizona. They find a hawaiian-like plant, but light blue and chiming like the transporters do. They find survivors along with a beautiful women, Vina (Susan Olivier). Pike is lead away by Vina and suddenly it is a trap. Pike is held hostage by three superior beings. Their brains are three times the size of a normal humans.
Also in the cast: Laurel Goodwin, Peter Duryea, John Hoyt.
Jeffery Hunter decided not to continue his Star Trek role.
A second pilot ("Where No Man Has Gone Before") was ordered, this one with William Shatner as "Captain Kirk", Leonard Nimoy returning a "Spock" (now without emotions), DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols. It was sent to NBC and in february 1966, NBC bought the show and placed it on the Autumn schedule. STAR TREK premiered September 8, 1966 with the episode, The Man Trap", NBC 8:30pm.

Majel Barrett appears as Nurse Chapel. Uhura did not appear in this one. barbara Baldavin was the communications officier.
"Turnabout Intruder" was the last episode of Star Trek (1966-69) to be seen on June 3, 1969.
Star Trek became a hit when it was syndicated on independant television stations.
Star Trek then became a Saturday morning cartoon-adventure in 1973-74.
On March 28, 1978 at the Paramount lot with the original Enterprise crew, who had not been together since 1969, announced they would be filming a STAR TREK motion picture.
STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was released December 1979 and the legacy begins again.

ATTENTION Starfleet Academy: STAR TREK tv series (1966-69) returns to television, this October 2006 on KNBC Channel 4 Los Angeles, Sunday Nights 12:05am.
The very first and original STAR TREK tv series will return to syndication with an updated look a la Star Wars (1977/1997) and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982/2002).
With the idea of Michael Okuda and others with CBS Digital, they have replaced and added new visual effects in each episode. The Enterprise now has spinning engine lights. The Enterprise in space will now look more sharp with more detail and depth. The colors are rich. Each episode is crystal-clear. The Earth will have a more accurate surface and the other "planets" will have computer-generated effects as well. Some surprises too. All 79 episodes have been digitally remastered with computer-generated effects.
TV LAND does not air the restored version.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal! Shocking! Great!.......2006-09-19

What a phenomenal film! Shocking for its time in its honest portrayal of racism and racism-motivated violence, and to a lesser extent, other hot-button issues like marital sexuality and infidelity, and even statutory rape. Still shocking today.

You won't believe this is the same William Shatner from the Priceline commercials, TJ Hooker, Boston Legal, or even Star Trek. Shatner, as The Intruder, is a serious actor and does a fantastic job. It's a shame that almost nobody saw this film for years after its release - Shatner's career might have taken a different and more respected turn. Most of the supporting performances in The Intruder are equally strong.

The Intruder was written by Charles Beaumont (based on his own novel), who wrote more episodes of the original Twilight Zone than anyone except Rod Serling. The Intruder does have a bit of the Twilight Zone vibe to it. (Interestingly, Serling penned an episode of TZ for Season 4 that feels too much like The Intruder to have been a coincidence. The episode is called "He's Alive" and stars a very young Dennis Hopper, but it's not nearly as good as The Intruder and, in my view, is not one of the stronger TZ episodes.)

All in all, The Intruder is an excellent film. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Anti-Segregation Film.......2006-01-08

Divorcing this film from the time it was made it's still an amazing achievement. When you do consider that this film was made while the civil rights struggle was still going on makes one more appreciative of the guts and courage it took Roger Corman to bring this film to the screen. Only Corman could have made this film because no major studio wanted to touch it. Corman had to do it on a shoestring budget and even then he lost money on this enterprise. In all likelihood the film contained too many uncomfortable truths about us to attract wide distribution. Consider that it was only a short time before this film was made that we had fought a war against facism only to have an institutionalized form of it in our own backyard. OK, enough of the soapbox. This film works because it feels so real not unlike a documentary. Corman's employment of non-actors probably contributes to it's authenticity. It does take some doing to distance William Shatner from Captain Kirk but do consider that this film was made 5 years prior to "Star Trek" and Shatner was a newcomer at the time this film was made.

5 out of 5 stars ROGER CORMAN AND WILLIAM SHATNER TEAM UP & IT'S NOT "BIG BAD MAMA".......2005-10-22

This nearly-lost treasure has been restored to its original length and form on this 40th Anniversary Edition DVD.

A lot of attention is given as to whether or not Roger Corman made or lost money on this movie. I am fairly certain [especially after seeing the interview with him and Shatner on this DVD] that this is one film he is proud to have lost money on. His only regret for losing money on it is probably because it means very few people saw "The Intruder" when it was released in 1962.

It's a funny thing how kids love to see this movie today. First, it's because "Captain Kirk" is the star and, second, it's all the nasty language that is not politically correct that comes out of his and almost everyone else's mouths. Racial slurs abound that don't just attack Blacks, but Jews and eventually everyone that doen't agree with their racist ideals. But then as the film continues, something happens, something wonderful -- the kids get the message. The way I use to recite "Kirk's" lines from "Star Trek" in the 60s [and still do], my teenage daughter and 22-year-old son recite Adam Cramer's (William Shatner) lines from this newly-released DVD which was filmed before "Star Trek". They just love Adam Cramer because he is so perfectly contemptible. He seems like a caricature today, but 44 years ago he represented strong opinions that were widely held in many parts of this country.

So, back to today. What is the significance of all this?

Probably, it is both a hard and gritty time capsule of how things were and a true-though-not-so-admirable history lesson for our children. From the reactions I have seen to "THE INTRUDER" over the past 5 years, I would say that the kids are getting the point very clearly.

ABOUT THE DVD:

This is a terrific transfer in every way. It is the Widescreen Theatrical Version. DVD features include: Interview with Roger Corman and William Shatner [quite good], Original Theatrical Trailers, Cast and Crew Biographies, Interactive Menus and Previews. It is rated PG-13.

On the back of the DVD case the following description of the film is given: "Arriving in a sleepy Southern town on the eve of integration, slick, charismatic Adam Cramer [William Shatner] is an ominous influence, inciting its white citizens into a racial fervor and plunging the once quiet community into a state of chaos."

What isn't in the description above is the raucous and shameful manner in which the future Captain of the Enterprise behaved. His immoral behavior, including the blackmailing and implied molestation of a minor girl and the rape of a vulnerable, married neighbor [Jeanne Cooper], is perfectly suited to his inflamatory racial speeches and the violence and murder that insued as a result of his instigations. We get to see here where and how the future Captain Kirk began making those speeches which a few years later brought understanding to the galaxy [at least on TV].

THANK YOU CAPTAIN KIRK AND ROGER CORMAN!

4 out of 5 stars "This town is going to burn...!".......2005-07-03

In the 1960's a number of professional rabel rousers toured a cicuit of southern cities from one hot spot to another, and where there were not any local disturbances they created a few of their own. These were hell raisers like Asa 'Ace' Carter, JB Stoner, and Connie Lynch - recognizable from his confederate flag vest. In this film William Shatner plays such a manipulator of local tensions. Shatner blows into a sleepy southern town, links up with the local fat-cat and re-ignites a local racism somewhat dormant since the white power structure came out on the losing end of 'Brown v. Board of Education'.

The picture takes on a film noir atmosphere with stark black and white photography, and Shatner's creepy attempts to manipulate not only the racial bitterness of the local populace but the desires of some of the local females as well. Shatner's performance is extraordinary as he peddles his message to the townsfolk building to a fever pitch in a chilling scene in which Shatner delivers a call to action from the courthouse steps on a sweltering summer evening.

Many supporting roles become memorable thanks to excellent acting and superior writing. Sadly, one of the key roles, that of a young black man who becomes the target of boiling racism is put in the hands of an amatuer who fails miserably - probably why they kept his lines to a minimum.

An important film that deserves to break out of the late night TV movie cycle where it is sometimes shown under the title, "I Hate Your Guts".

5 out of 5 stars Very frightening portrayal of racism..........2005-02-06

I love William Shatner, but I wanted to see his work before Star Trek, so, despite the racism theme, I decided to purchase this gem of a film. I've always thought William Shatner was a wonderful actor, and I think that people are always criticising him because they are envious. Ordinarily I would not want to watch this sort of film because of the strong feelings I have of Human Rights and equality and it was quite disturbing at times. It was very frightening and realistic, especially when he gets the entire town riled up. I thought it ended well, was a wonderfully made and above all, portrayed film. You must see it, if not for the acting, but for the determination that you would not let such a thing happen in your town.

Finally saw this. Lived up to the hype. Recommended if you prefer these 70's/80's movies as I do.

4 out of 5 stars Blood soaked slasher fun.......2007-05-06

Want to hear a funny story about my experience with Scott Spiegel's 1989 slasher "Intruder"? Wait! Where are you going? Come back! I promise my tale doesn't involve a slideshow in which you'll see me lounging on a beach wearing a microkini. Good. Now sit down and shut up. Anyway, I put off seeing "Intruder" for some time because I knew from my various investigations across the Internet that two versions of the film on DVD were floating around. One is the notorious unrated version, the one with all the gory carnage intact. The other is a cut edition that, obviously, leaves out the aforementioned blood and guts. Bummer. For the life of me I cannot understand why, in this day and age, a company would release a cut to ribbons version of a horror film. Maybe the people in charge of distributing this sleazy little classic thought that video stores wouldn't carry the unrated edition. Wrong. Even a certain well-known brick and mortar shop prominently displays unedited cuts of controversial films these days. The one near me didn't carry "Intruder" in any form, unfortunately. I had to rent online, and that service only listed the R-rated cut. For some mysterious reason they sent me the unrated version instead. Yay!

See, wasn't that a funny story? Har Har Har! Yeah. So back to Spiegel's "Intruder". You've read about it, talked about it with friends, and now you're ready to sit down and finally see it. The film is pretty much everything you've heard about from others. Gory, poorly acted, gory, shot on the cheap, gory, inventive camera angles, gory--yep, it's a fun film. Set in a grocery store late at night, "Intruder" tells the story of Jennifer (Elizabeth Cox), a night cashier with a big problem. Her criminal boyfriend Craig (David Byrnes) just got out of jail and desperately wants to see his former squeeze. She wants nothing to do with him, of course, leading to a tense scene in which a fight breaks out between Craig and the store's staff. Speaking of the staff, we've got Jennifer's pal Linda (Renee Estevez), Randy (Sam Raimi), and "Produce" Joe (Ted Raimi). The owner of the store, Danny (Eugene Glazer), and his co-owner Bill (Dan Hicks) round out the cast. Unless you count the two second cameo by Bruce Campbell as one of the cops looking for the wayward Craig. It's a lot of people to keep track of, but the large cast also means plenty of cannon fodder for the killer.

After the fight with Craig, Danny and Bill announce to the staff that they've decided to sell the store. Lots of complaining from the staff ensues before everyone grudgingly goes back to the grind. Linda chats with the frazzled Jennifer before leaving for the night. Too bad for her considering what happens out in the parking lot. Thus begins the bloodshed, and what a glorious bloodshed it is! What will you see in the uncut version of "Intruder"? How does a butcher knife in the head, a head slowly crushed in a compactor, and a meat hook through the throat grab you? You'll see all of that plus the infamous band saw atrocity so many other reviewers talk about with such relish. Even better, the gore effects look convincing. They ought to since the camera lingers with tender loving care on each act of bloody brutality. Just when you think the movie doesn't have anything else to offer, sit back and prepare yourself for a few twists and turns before we learn the identity of the killer. I would say that "Intruder" is almost gialloish in its use of myriad red herrings concerning the murderer rampaging through the store.

About the only drawback I saw while watching the movie concerns the pacing. Almost nothing of real interest happens in the first half of the movie. Wait, scratch that: I guess that's not true if you want to learn the ends and outs of working the night shift at the local grocery store, but you have to wait forever if you're tuning in to see the gore. The killings start happening like clockwork about forty or fifty minutes in, so it's a pretty long wait by movie standards. Even "Friday the 13th" tried to spread the killings out better than that. Oh well. "Intruder" boasts far more positives than negatives. The former includes, but is not limited to, the gore, the hot girl playing the lead, her late 1980s haircut (which really looks good on her), the kooky cast, and the atmospheric setting. There's nothing creepier than a big, nearly abandoned building late at night. It's the perfect environment in which a spree killer can perform his or her bloody work without having to worry about detection. A pox upon the MPAA for demanding heavy cuts back in the 1980s. A further pox upon Paramount for caving in to the MPAA. Then again, these are the same nervous nellies that still refuse to give us uncut versions of the various "Friday the 13th" films.

"Intruder" gets four stars from me. It's a fun film that will go down very easy with the slasher fan crowd. Too bad the DVD release doesn't contain much in the way of extras. We get a trailer for the film and a few other trailers for other flicks thrown in for good measure. No commentary track or cast and crew interviews. Disappointing in the extreme. A few other additions in the supplements department surely would have sent the fanboys into a tizzy, but it doesn't really matter. Spiegel's fun little slasher is entertaining enough without glitzy extras. Definitely worth a watch if you like horror movies. If you worship the slasher genre, the uncut version of "Intruder" is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and fun slasher flick.......2006-09-13

Intruder should have been called Halloween In A Supermarket. It's a scary slasher movie from a time when slashers were fun and gory. The first half hour is kind of slow, not boring just slow. However, after that it's non-stop horror as a killer stalks the employees at a grocery store that is going out of business. The twist ending is clever and sets up a sequel. I don't understand why there hasn't been a sequel to this, considering that it's better than about half of the Friday the 13th series. If the flick had some nudity, it would a perfect slasher movie. As it is, it's an almost perfect slasher movie.

3 out of 5 stars Wholesale Slaughterhouse!!.......2006-08-26

Although starts off slowly this above average b-movie really packs a gory punch in the last 35 minutes or so.. The acting is what you might expect from an 80's horror flick but, who is watching these movies for the performances? However, I think the girl that was killed should have taken the leading role. Now.. here is a little something that bugs me about alot of companies that produce films to dvd. Bruce Campbell is in this movie for two minutes and for some strange marketing reason he is listed as the star of the film. Why? I really hate that. I love Campbell but, i dont like when I am led to believe that he plays a significant role in a movie and he is in it for a two minute "cop" role at the end of the movie. Anyway.. if you havent seen "Intruder" it takes place in a supermarket while the 3rd shift crew stocks, changes prices and, cleans. They all get more than they "bargain" for when they are told that the store will be closing in a month and their jobs will be lost. On top of the bad news a psychotic killer is picking them off one by one. The deaths are gruesome. Especially two in particular. One involves a butchers electric meat cutter, the other involves a box recycling bin. Over all I give this movie 3 stars and a half.. definitely elevated by it's gory deaths!! Fun Stuff!

3 out of 5 stars Finally an uncut release of this film.......2006-04-23

There's only two reasons to see this film - the "meat cutter" scene, and Sam Raimi is in it.

If cheesy 80's slasher flicks, with bad acting, are your thing, this movie is right up your alley. The DVD release of this film is a mixed bag. I'm glad they finally presented it in it's original form with all the gore intact. However the packaging of it is awful. The cover depcts a silouhette of someone with an axe, yet the killer in this movie doesn't even use one. Worse yet; the movie *tries* to keep you guessing as to who the killer is, but if you flip the DVD case over and glance at the pics on the back, it blows it and shows you who is the killer.

That said, there is a GREAT scene where someone gets their head cut apart on a meat cutter. I remember reading about this scene in Fangoria back in the day, where they mentioned how much work went into making it. I was really dissapointed to find out it was edited out of the VHS version that originally came out. However, the dvd has this scene in all it's glory. In addition, there is a lengthier meat cleaver scene towards the end, that was originally toned down in the first release of the film.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Just plain bad.......2005-01-21

Two things struck me about this film:

1. Ledoux clearly didn't bother doing his research into computer experts. Or people who didn't just buy a ready made PC from a chain store for that matter. Maybe he decided all the experts should use XP so 85% of the viewing world could relate to the computers but, damn, how many hackers/programmers would be using that ghastly piece of over priced bloatware commonly known as Outlook? So, the characterisation was bad with only stereotypes.

2. Is it just me or did it look like a cheap version of an English cop drama? We already know the characters are clichés, but so is the plot and dialogue. BTW, I like British cop dramas, well, Murder City at least. But TBM looked like it had a smaller budget than those shows. Ledoux could've at least overcome the look by spending money on a writer who'd graduated high school.

Don't watch this unless it's on TV and there is absolutely nothing else to do.

2 out of 5 stars Three Blind Mice **SPOILER**.......2004-08-06

I agree with Dustin B - shame not to see Edward Furlong in T3 - this movie had so much potential (in the realm of Hitchcock) but went wrong in so many ways - it insulted the audience several times (old-fashioned cops and a hacker with a knack for buggin whose place is broken into and he doesn't check for bugs or wonder why someone was even there?) The ending fight was pretty lame tho the twist wasn't too bad - the older actors weren't very good - too stereotypical and one dimensional. It had the strangest clash of a 1940's/2004 that didnt mix. And yes, Furlong did seem too tired too much of the time (there were actual scenes where it looked like he had a good night's sleep). If you want to see something not so technical but along the same lines - rent 8mm

3 out of 5 stars Movie Seems Diffrent..........2004-05-29

The actors in this movie did a great job; what
made this movie lose potential was the ending
(Which I will not reveal).

Here's how the storyline goes.
A young adult named Thomas visits a Web Cam Site
and falls in love with a nice looking lady. He
develops a habbit of watching her on his screen.
One day he logs on to her site and can't access it.
He then proceeds to "gain access" to it. He views
his "internet girl" as usual. Two seconds later
Thomas sees his lady get slaughtered.
The Police can not seem to help since the killer is
masked and Thomas viewed remotely. But then a beautiful
police officer named Claire gets involved. Afterward,
Thomas and Claire set up their own web cam hoping to
attract the killer. Things really started to really start
to get interesting. The movie was great until the ending.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing and Messy Thriller Just Doesn't Work.......2004-01-23

Edward Furlong stars in this British/French thriller. Emilia Fox ("The Pianist"), Chiwetel Ejiofor ("Dirty Pretty Things") Elsa Zylberstein ("Mina Tannenbaum") also appear, and the director is Mathias Ledoux. Well, the stars' names are pretty impressive.

Edward Furlong is a compuer programmer Thomas living in London, and perhaps has too much curiosity. Now, he is visiting his favorite site run by 'Cathy' ... but two strangethings happen. One: the internet connection is suddenly disrupted; Two: After the connection is back, Thomas witnesses an unknown person in mask sneaking behind Cathy, and ... you know what happens next.

Yes, this is a kind of Hitchcock in the internet age, or at least it wants to be so. You expect something like 'cyber-cop'? Sorry, but as you see soon, its uninspired direction and impossible story makes it a text about 'How Not To Make a Thriller." You know, the London cops step in, but they even don't seem to know how the net works. They suspect that the most unlikely person in the world actually did it (how stupid) while they can locate the whereabout of Cathy in a day or two. That is because, one of the cops claims, they are too "old-fashioned."

Things get slightly better when a beautiful police officer Claire with knowledge about the website (Fox) enters the plot. She and her trusted partner (Ejiofor) investigate the case, and these good actors raise the film a notch higher. But the good news end here, as the story shows most unexpected (and unbelievable) development in the second half. I won't tell you about that. I only say that there are so many twists and turns, but none of them is surprising or thrilling. Why should intelligent Claire do THAT in front of a web-cam remains the greatest mystery of this thrill-less thriller.

I saw the director's previous film "En Face" (in French), which was clearly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock's films like "Rebecca." But that thrilling experience and stylish camera of the master were not to be seen then, and not now again.

Finally, to the fans of Edward Furlong. It is sad to see him doing this while he should be doing "T3" or something like "American History X." He is not good at all, and always looks too tired. I don't want to say it, but it is true.

Not to be confused with Agatha Christie, or any decent thriller. Simply a mess.

1 out of 5 stars art film incoherence.......2006-11-02

    *1/2

"The Intruder" is a maddeningly incoherent movie from France that gives so-called "art films" a bad name. The story is something about a bitter old coot who goes searching for a heart transplant, but beyond that, I have no idea who any of the people in the movie were or why they were doing what they were doing.

This muddled, snail-paced drama is a full two hours and five minutes long - though I seriously doubt anyone with any kind of a life will still be hanging around by the closing credits.

    5 out of 5 stars A Stingy Goddess.......2006-07-05

Louis (Michel Subor)an aging loner is eventually forced to seek help. He visits the ever beautiful Beatrice Dalle, the Stingy Goddess who just says no. The Intruder journeys into the real world & finds kindness from ordinary communal peoples in the tropical islands, where he briefly meets his son. However it is imminent Michel will wind up alone in that cold steel box. The Stingy Goddess doesn't give much that we can keep. Nevertheless with director Claire Denis, we get drunk on ocean, wind, trees, animals, people & the magnificent chorus of the imagination.

4 out of 5 stars The nonpareil of free association film making.......2006-05-20

Claire Denis has demonstrated repeatedly that film does not need to tell a story, that it is sufficient to create an experience that allows the viewer to take the ingredients and make of them what they will.

Ostensibly the idea within the framework of a most non-linear film is the older man living on the French-Swiss border, a man devoted to his dogs, who still has a lover, but whose cardiac status increasingly threatens his life. He has a son with a little family who infrequently meet with him, but when he discovers he is in need of a heart transplant he opts for going to Tahiti via Japan to obtain a heart transplant on the black market and to rekindle a long lost relationship with a son he had form a Tahitian women years ago.

What Denis does with this outline of a story is use her camera to explore the loneliness of the soul, the vastness of nature, man's interaction with people vs animals, etc. Much of the time the 'film' doesn't make sense, but that is because we try too hard to connect all the dots laid out before us in beautiful pictures. Life is sort of like that: we look, see, observe, integrate, process, and make of it what we will.

In using this form of film making (much as she did in the strangely beautiful 'Beau Travail') Claire Denis has developed a signature technique. Whether or not the viewer finds the finished product rewarding has much to do with our individual methods of processing visual and conceptual information. This is an interesting and visually captivating film, but many viewers will find it an overly long discourse about very little. Perhaps watching again will change that. Grady Harp, May 06

    5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Masterpiece.......2006-05-07

Claire Denis has done the unthinkable and topped her previous masterpiece, Beau Travail, with this marvelously elliptical and oneiric film. This is a film that you feel, a deeply challenging and ultimately incredibly rewarding cinematic experience. It also features quite possibly the greatest title sequence ever put on film. A must watch for anyone who wants to be rewarded for their viewing efforts.

    1 out of 5 stars A Bad Acid Trip............2006-05-05

I will agree that the cinematography is beautiful, but the story is very difficult to follow. Perhaps I should have read the thirty page book this movie is supposedly based on before purchasing the DVD. The movie seems disjointed and surreal at times. I am not sure how to put the pieces of this puzzle together. I have more questions about this film than answers. Even the interview with the producer, Claire Denis, is cryptic.

5 out of 5 stars Good one for fans of bad horror.......2006-08-12

As a fan of low budget, low grade horror movies, I must give this one 5 stars. It certainly fits the bill and has all of the elements I like to see in these type of movies: bad acting, has been stars, bad effects, and little/no/bad plot. You can't judge these movies by the same standards as regular movies, you need to just go for the ride, however bad it may be. If nothing else, it should be watched purely for the scene with Gary Busey.

1 out of 5 stars i didnt even wanna give it 1 star, but amazon made me........2006-01-09

this is probably the 2nd worst movie i have ever seen...the first being "da hip hop witch" [which i couldnt even stomach to watch that all the way through]......one weekend, there was a free weekend of cinemax or shotime and this movie came on. i'm not sure why i watched all of it, but i did. what zee heck is going on in this movie?? there is no violence, very little language, and the "drug use" is a couple of teens smoking a joint for like 2 minutes...oh no! i think there is a flash of ta-ta's but its not worth watching because this movie is so horrible. whatever pansy wrote that it will scare the bejesus out of you is a (...)...i challenge that douche to come over and watch some of the movies i have in my collection....well, no, because they might get scared, have a heart attack and then i would have some 'splaining to do.
again, this movie(...). i could eat a bunch of laxatives, video tape the following foulness, and have a better movie than this. it shouldnt be labeled as horror...there should just be a "(...)" catagory for crap like this. "a crack in the floor"??? more like a crack in that (...)and this is what fell out.

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready to be SCARED!!!.......2004-10-18

This horror movie starring Mario Lopez, Tracy Scoggins and Gary Busey will scare the bejesus out of you. A group of hikers happens upon a seemingly deserted cabin out in woods. Little do they know the unthinkable awaits them. A deranged and isolated man, Jeremiah, who's last contact with civilization came 33 years ago, sees them, stalks them, and...

Don't wait to see this exciting and horror filled movie! That is, if you dare.....

4 out of 5 stars Pretty fun little horror flick........2004-05-09

This is a good movie to rent on a fun night with friends and a bottle of wine. Some of the "scary" parts are actually laughable but that's OK, I'd rather laugh than sream. The last third of the movie is basically Mario Lopez and Stephen Saux trying to find the killer. Those two seem to work together pretty well and are the most natural of the bunch. It is hard to find in the states but it was in most blockbusters and Rogers Video stores when I went back to Canada. I ended up buying it real cheap on Amazon and think you may want to do the same. Great scene with Gary Busey that is strange but fun.

1 out of 5 stars Actually -5 stars, DONT RENT THIS CRAP!!!!.......2004-03-14

On the back it shows jack bussy with an axe. He is only in the movie for like 2 minutes. The story, plot, and acting is all pretty crappy. I suggest you rent evil dead 2, or wrong turn, Hell even Mary poppins, anything but this.

No, it's the cast. A homeowner (Jeff Daniels) shoots an intruder, who turns out to be his business partner. A police officer (Robert Forster) suspects a setup. His wife (Joan Allen), who didn't know they even had a gun in the house, she gets a job with a reclusive computer billionaire (Gary Sinise). The billionaire's former assistant (Josh Brolin) has left the company to work in the movies, and he falls for a street waif (Anna Paquin). Daniels's lawyer (André Braugher), who is gay, also falls for the waif, much to the chagrin of his unstable partner (David Schwimmer) as well as the waif's unstable brother (Giovanni Ribisi). Based on a play by Chicago playwright Keith Reddin (who also wrote the screenplay) and directed by theater director turned first-time movie director James D. Stern, It's the Rage never transcends its theatrical roots. Instead of a character type, each person in the story represents a different (but equally shallow) facet of rage. It's all just an elaborate setup to preach about gun control and how our society is increasingly a society of rage. What the world needs, the movie is saying, is a little more self- control and understanding. Obviously, what it also needs is a better use of such a talented cast. --Andy Spletzer

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I HAVE A GUN... SO DO I... ME TOO... .......2006-01-09

I think the film got a little problem - it has hard time establishing itself in a genre. On one hand it's satirical and funny story but seems that it has too much morality about it. On the other hand, if it's a morality tale, it's not as serious as a morality tale should be.
Here we have a bunch of characters whose paths intersect chaotically: Warren - an extremely jealous husband, Annabel - a girl mad about money, Sidney - her junkie brother, Chris - an inhibited and sedated homosexual, Morgan - eccentric computer genius. All they have in common - are handguns, these people can't imagine themselves without weapons. Well, and the fact that they all are a bit crazy. And I guess that was one of the messages of the movie - all people are weirdos of their own kind, and it's irresponsible to let them have guns, because a situation may occur when they won't be able to restrain their emotions. And such situations eventually happen in this picture as you can guess. Its moral - guns are evil - is shown to us in every possible way although rather light-hearted and humoristic. Therefore not very convincing.
But if to take "It's the Rage" as a comedy, it works just fine. There's a lot of hilarious moments, and the episode with Giovanni Ribisi's character in a shooting range ("Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me?! Well, there's nobody else here, so you must be talking to me!") is one of the funniest I've seen lately. Besides brilliant Ribisi there are many excellent actors here: Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, Robert Forster, Anna Paquin, David Schwimmer, Josh Brolin and Gary Sinise. They all are a solid reason to watch the movie.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT Performances by all the cast & director but NO Message.......2003-07-29

This movie ain't that bad as portrayed by the amazon reviwers on this site. I thought all the actors were superb. The shoplifter from X Men showed another dimension I never knew she had. All in all every actor was solid here and I adored them all. The film, what with being coined as an anti-gun (ala Bowling For Columbine) satire or commentary didn't really hit a chord with this viewer in that sense. But never the less it did have a strong plot. I patcularly liked Gary Sinies's character complaining about a common problem in todays society - too much information. Also the special effects in his billionaires house's many TV Screens were great and hi-tech. There was a couple of times I laughed out loud during this movie btw. So it's dark comedy with a twist indeed.

    2 out of 5 stars Scattershot.......2003-02-01

Based on a play (which I've never seen), "It's the Rage" follows an ensemble of coincidentally linked characters either perpetrating or victimized by gun violence of all kinds. The ultimate message-a gun is the only thing separating an ordinary but otherwise stressed out person from becoming a murderer-seems reasonable. But the film's flashy and shallow textures undercut its own serious agenda. Or maybe it's the other way around. In either case, "It's the Rage" may be intriguing on its Tarantino-esque surface and commendable for its anti-gun social message, but the film can't help but fail as these two impulses fight it out. Ultimately, "It's the Rage is bloodless in every sense of the word.

    5 out of 5 stars ...brilliant!!!.......2002-09-24

a lot of people miss the point labeling this as anti-gun propaganda. its not saying "guns are bad, dont use guns", its making fun of the cheesy crime movies meant to portray human nature and street life and all that mess. there's all these movies beating the same cliche characters into the ground... this movie takes EVERY cliche crime movie character you have EVER seen and puts them all in a big gun totin wad

if you dont instantly label it as one of those "guns kill people" movies, you should have a great time watching it, its just a beautiful movie man, absolutely beautiful

2 out of 5 stars Godawful morality tale missing the point.......2002-04-22

For a while, I thought this movie was some sort of scathing satire. Of what, I wasn't sure, but there are some absolutely hysterical and stupid things that go on in this movie. Apparently, the intention of this farce is to be some sort of moral commentary on guns in our society. Unfortunately for IT'S THE RAGE, in order for a morality tale to be at all successful, it has to be watchable AND believable. This movie, supposedly anti-firearm, is at its most hilarious when the firearms are being waved about.

The "ensemble" cast has many fine, fine actors, all of whom probably thought that by making this movie, the world would be a better place and they could pick up a paycheck at the same time. Oh well.

Ribisi is hilarious as the meth-junkie with paranoid schizophrenia. His scene in the shooting range is one of the most amusing things I've ever seen. His little kleptomaniac whore of a sister was also really funny, but I recommend seeing Reese Witherspoon in FREEWAY. Also, the scene in the bar where everyone goes for their gun at once was absolutely hilarious! If only they all shot each other, the credits would have rolled, we would have satisfylingly hit rewind. Alas.

Jeff Daniels is funny as the psychopathic white-bred suburban slimeball. Many of his lines were really sharp, and since we didn't care about his dead business partner, why should we? Gary Sinise is a great actor who is once again unfortunately cast, this time as the mentally imbalanced and paranoid recluse billionaire. Gary Schwimmer, ala FRIENDS, plays a gay guy with all the brilliance that cliche can deliver. THIS character suffers from manic depression. There is also a former assistant of the paranoid billionaire who works in a video store and suffers from romantic delusions. We just KNOW he's not fit for survival in THIS ugly, ugly world.

To all of these loopy, unintentionally comic parts we have Joan Allen as the "straightman." She goes through the film having bad day after bad day. As if people weren't awful BEFORE they invented guns. One of the prerequisites of inventing guns in the first place is awfulness, thus the supposed MORAL of this tale is missing the point.

This movie has many problems: superficial characters, goofy script, "missed points", blathering pretentiousness, inane coincidences, unintentional self-parody, etcetera.

What are we to morally conclude from IT'S THE RAGE? Not that society would be better off without guns. Certainly not that guns CAUSE rage in society. Rather, we can draw the lesson from this movie a point that is actually pretty obvious and uncontroversial: psychopaths, manic depressives, paranoid schizophrenics, kleptomaniac whoring minors, and insane billionaires ought not to have guns....well duh. IT'S THE RAGE wants to be anti-gun, yet its case for solving the symptoms fails. It does --sorta-- make the case that we really need to deal with the disease.
