Description
Andrzej Wajda's interpretation of a classic 19th century epic depicts the sweeping change in values ushered in by the industrial revolution. Three friends hope to build a factory, but their plans are quickly jeopardized by local politics and one of the partner's dangerous love affair. Critically acclaimed for its masterful direction and fine acting, this ever-current film has a strong statement to make about modern times. 4 out of 5 stars Great value.......2005-07-22

You can't go wrong with this when the price is so low. The animation quality is like that typically seen in basic Saturday morning cartoons, which is good enough for kids. What I like is that all the videos in this series give all the important details of the story, rather than giving a shallow, watered-down version as is usually the case in children's stories. These will entertain preschoolers up through junior high and the script is very closely based on the scriptural account. The only reason I didn't give this series a 5 is that each video has a hokey song that could definitely have been left out, but for such a low price and good script, I can overlook that.

5 out of 5 stars Great video with accurate Bible facts.......2003-05-28

I purchased this dvd along with Jonah and the whale (part of the Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible)very sceptically. I was debating about another Bible series videos which has more actual videos but is much more costly. When I first watched it with my 2 1/2 yr old, I found the animation well done. The actual events in the movie were fairly accurate. Charlton Heston gives a brief synopsis before the video. My daughter loves this video and we plan to purchase more in this series.

Product Description

and even higher dreams, basketball star Davey Hancock (Gedrick) eagerly anticipates high school graduation and continuing his legacy in the challenging, "adult" world of college. But the future holds many surprises and no guarantees for Davey or for his classmates-the all-American cheerleader Mary (Pollan) and off-beat "Senator" (Sutherland). Mary is college-bound, but discovers deeper ties at home. Senator is adrift, until he meets the wild-tempered Bev (Ryan), who fills his life with dangerous excitement. As these four young adults hurtle through life's unpredictable turns and harsh realities, they discover that adulthood on the edge of the American Dream is a far cry from the "promised land" they had come to expect.

3 out of 5 stars Not what they thought it would be..........2003-07-10

I got a copy of the film 'Promised Land' from a friend. It is set in a small midwestern town where high school basketball is king. Sounds rather like Indiana, doesn't it? This gave the initial appeal to me, as films like this can help me understand the people in the area better -- at least, this is my hope, since I am not an Indiana native.

The actors are all very young. The film stars a very young Keifer Sutherland (Danny) and Meg Ryan (Bev) as a rather unlikely couple. The real 'star' of the film, the one who gets top billing, is Jason Gedrick (Hancock), whose career has been rather less prominent than Sutherland's or Ryan's. Tracy Jo Pollan (Mary) also stars in one of her few starring film roles. Pollan is now much better known through her marriage to Michael J. Fox.

The plot is a rather simple one. Four characters -- a high school basketball star (Hancock), a cheerleader (Mary), a dropout (Danny), his wife from a western state (Bev)-- all get tangled together in a final blow-up in the small hometown. The film opens during the all-important last moments of a basketball game. Of course, our guys win; the basketball star announces he's leaving for college, and the dropout announces he's leaving town. The cheerleader is left behind, but has hopes of her own.

Fast-forward two years. The basketball star is back home, working as a policeman. We slowly discover during the course of the film that he didn't make it as a college basketball star, and couldn't stay in college any other way. Mary, meanwhile, has gone off to another college, but has come home for the Christmas holiday, and as Hancock tries to rekindle old feelings, probably largely derived from hoping to recapture feelings of past glory, she feels pressured.

Danny, in the meanwhile, has gone out west and married Bev, a strange and wild woman. We learn that Danny has spent time in jail, and has never had a steady job or stable life. We don't learn as much about Bev through her speech, but can assume as much is true for her through her behaviour. Danny and Bev marry is a bizarre Las Vegas wedding ...and begin the long trek back home so she can be introduced to the family for Christmas (something that takes Bev by surprise).

Danny comes home and, in the course of various strange happenings, ends up with Bev in a convenience-store robbery. Hancock is the officer called to the scene, and ends up shooting Danny dead.

There are many unrealistic parts to the plot. Few high school jock stars are as likely to be friendly toward the dropouts as Hancock is toward Danny, for instance. When Danny returns home and goes to a bar, his friends wave hello, calling out 'Hi, Senator!' Apparently, Senator was his mock-ironic nickname in high school. One of his friends asks if he has become a senator yet; I hope that small-town folk aren't this unaware of the ways of political reality!

However, many of the emotions and situations ring true. Hancock's frustration with having reached the pinnacle of his life's glory at age 18 are very present; Mary's resistance at being drawn back into that life, yet still being attracted to Hancock is understandable. Bev is a strange character overall. She possibly represents the wildness that was lacking in the sombre (read - boring) small town environment.

'In a small town like that, you only get to make about one mistake.' Danny says this to Bev, and that is a real insight. Small towns are the same the world over -- those who don't leave remember everything for generations.

The production quality of the film is fairly good, but as one of the earliest of the Sundance productions, it lacked a budget for the final, Hollywood polish. The director, Michael Hoffman, does not have an extensive filmography, but has directed such diverse films as Soapdish, Restoration, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. A little editing. The acting is good, but not great. The script is sometimes lacking, but passing fair. The characters are people who begin to spark an interest, but are ultimately unsustainable. Had there not been the emotional and violent ending (very uncharacteristic for the town, one imagines), there would be little memorable.

This is a slice of American life in the middle; not the top, nothing glitzy or glamourous here, but not the bottom either. A very different view of high school and college-age years than typical Hollywood fare -- hopes have been dashed, if there were hopes at all, and the future stretches out in front, but as a rather bleak picture of sameness.

The film does not have a happy ending. Perhaps even without the shooting at the end, there would not have been a happy ending. Does one want a fast death in a blaze of glory, or a slow death by mediocrity? Sometimes that seems like the only two options for many people, and not just those in small towns. Ultimately, there is no Promised Land here. It is something these characters aren't permitted to enter, because it has been defined beyond their abilities to attain.

This film is largely overlooked, and has many points in which improvement can be made. Ultimately, it hangs together adequately, but not superbly, and perhaps that is ultimately its downfall.

1 out of 5 stars Nearly 15 yrs later, still the worst movie I've seen.......2002-01-21

Agree that it was beautifully filmed, but.... there must have been a great deal lost in the translation.

4 out of 5 stars The American Dream.......2002-01-15

The American Dream is something different for everyone and cannot easily be defined. This film does a pretty fair job on debunking the generalized commonly accepted myth of the standard American Dream theory, espeially as it is based on true events. James Newton Howard was just starting back then and his brilliance shines through magnificently in his score. The film craft itself beautifully rendered, well acted and is to me well balanced and paced for the subject matter. I have to dust it off every once in awhile to remind myself what the potentials and pitfalls of being American is all about.

    4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous junkfood........2001-07-08

Alas, the whole is less than the parts. Promised Land is a beautifully filmed, well acted, heartbreaking story with an absolutely fabulous score by the always excellent James Newton Howard. Its just that the material--the story itself--isn't worthy of such gorgeous cinematography and fine performances. Storywise, its pretty much junk but what raises it up are some really (visually) beautiful scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Brings the Bible to life!.......2007-03-27

Ever wonder what it means to "sit in the gate?" What about seeing where David fought Goliath? This video makes all of those wonderful stories in the Bible come to life by seeing where they took place. It helps increase understanding by learning cultural and societal issues related to geography. You can see why God promised land that the Children of Israel gave up and the consequences of the decisions. I also like the fact that there are several separate topics, allowing you to use them for home study, one topic at a time. Each is about 30 minutes in length. Highly recommend this and other DVDs in the series.

Our family used this guide with the DVD. We read the Bible verses suggested in the guide, then watched the DVD lesson, and then went through the questions in the guide. It was a very helpful addition to the DVD lesson, and brought even greater meaning to this wonderful DVD Bible study series.

5 out of 5 stars "You know what they say about funerals. Someone always catches his death.".......2007-02-08

One of the best of the Inspector Morse series (from the fifth series, 1991), Promised Land is also atypical. Here most of the action takes place in New South Wales, Australia, and there is almost no music, though there is a terrific photo of Morse climbing the steps to the famed Sydney Opera House in the final scene. As always, the photography is outstanding, and anyone who has not been to New South Wales is in for a rare treat, as the visions of the countryside make this seem, indeed, the Promised Land.

Morse and Sgt. Lewis go to Hereford, NSW, after Peter Matthews, convicted and sent to prison on the strength of testimony from Morse's "supergrass," Kenny Stone, dies of AIDS while in a London jail. (In a classic British irony, Kenny the "supergrass" is now running a lawnmower repair shop.) Matthews's mother has always stated that Peter was at home with her at the time of a robbery/killing, and an investigation into Matthews's conviction, one of Morse's biggest triumphs, is underway, inspired by controversy stirred by the press.

Morse wants to re-interview Kenny Stone and his wife about their testimony regarding the driver of the getaway car. Kenny is now living under an assumed identity as Mike Harding, resident of a small town in New South Wales. Morse's arrival is greeted coldly by everyone. Stone/Harding is missing, his wife is obviously lying whenever she is interviewed about his whereabouts, and his business is in jeopardy. Someone has tracked him to this remote location and has threatened him and the family. The family believes that Morse has revealed information to someone dangerous. The local police resent Morse's presence--and, indeed, the presence of all Brits in the area.

When the teenage daughter of Harding is kidnapped, the relationship of Harding's wife with a local police officer, combined with Harding's own disappearance and the reasons for it, come under scrutiny. Morse and a gunman meet in a High Noon-type showdown for a grand finale. Here the viewer learns even more about the close-to-the-vest Inspector Morse and his feelings about law and his own responsibility for enforcing it. As always, the production values are outstanding, and this episode, unified from start to dramatic finish, carries a huge emotional punch, as Morse deals with the aftereffects of a conviction from ten years past. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Morse in God's Own Country?.......2002-03-16

Promised land begins, rather unpromisingly, with Morse and Strange observing a funeral and identifying in the grand tradition of detective movies the villains. A nod to the old Thaw series, the Sweeney, the show continues in this vein for a while as the boundaries are established, of getting the final villains, the possibility of a gang's release.

Morse is ordered to revisit a supergrass to try to uncover evidence which would resolve both the issues. The snitch has begun a new life in the equivalent of the witness protection scheme so everything appears to be straightforward.

On the eve of their departure, Lewis is more than a little miffed at having to forego his vacation, a burglary occurs at the local freesheet newspaper and in the grand Holmesian tradition, nothing is stolen.

Off our intrepid heroes set for Lewis to discover that the person they are visiting was transplanted to Australia.

There are some spectacular shots of the countryside which dwarf the car that they are driving and which serves to give a sense of perspective on the vastness of the country. In a vignette Morse discovers that he has not brought his beloved opera tape with him to play on the long drive. Lewis, searching for an alternative discovers country music, Australian style, on the radio. This again underscores the notion of Australia as a new country shaking off her connections to Britain.

On arriving at their destination the sterotypical portrayal of Australian men as boorish, gambling, womenisers is presented in a scene where Morse and Lewis venture into the local bar. In a very funny moment, Lewis orders a beer while Morse contents himself with an orange juice - a reversal of the usual position - which moves on to a condemnation by Morse of non-real ale and a perception by the locals that Morse is possibly homosexual.

The plot develops with a mysterious stranger driving a camper, the stoolie's wife is both hostile and yet welcoming. Her husband has disappeared, nothing new in that, and Morse and Lewis expend considerable energies in the search.

As the programme develops the stereotypical views of the country and it's people are challenged and they are shown to be warm, sociable, and open minded.

In the conclusion, in front of the Sydney Opera House, Lewis has resolved his issues by remaining in Australia to be joined by his wife. Morse is left in solitude with his ticket to the opera, a tragic figure who is unable to articulate his feelings.

This Morse does not have the usual twists and turns and in many ways is one of the most approachable of the shows. Regardless it is still terrific entertainment and well worth the five stars.

      5 out of 5 stars One of Wajda's masterpieces.......2006-01-21

This epic-romantic drama set in late 19th century Lodz was directed by Poland's grand old man of cinema, Andrzej Wajda, and brings his prodigious talent as a director to the forefront. Wajda, better known for cinematic depictions of World War II and the more recent Polish struggles with communism, was severely hampered in 1973 by lack of access to state-of-the-art film technology. Technical difficulties notwithstanding he managed to replicate the miserable conditions under which the population of the teeming 19th century industrial city of Lodz slaved away for the enrichment of their Polish, German and Jewish employers.

The film's story is complex and difficult to follow through the maze of interrelationships and the densely worded script, which may demand a second viewing for those who cannot keep up with English subtitles, as they faithfully follow the Polish. But it centers around the unbridled ambition of three young men--an aristocratic Pole, a Jew and a German--to establish themselves jointly as entrepreneurs while beating out the competition. Eventually, they are done in by their greed and capacity for making enemies needlessly. What you have is a highly affecting morality tale in which avarice takes a back seat to the general lack of moral/social values expertly depicted in the performances delivered by Olbrychski, Psoniak and a host of wonderful Polish character actors. Direct allusions to ethnic and national stereotypes and tensions may pass by some who are not familiar with Polish history vis-a-vis ethnic minorities. But Wajda averted potential accusations of anti-Semitism by studiously offering with mathematical precision equal numbers of sympathetic as well as unsympathetic characters from each of the three ethnicities surveyed in this film. It paid off, as he received the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for that year!

I experienced this film as anti-capitalist propaganda when I saw it for the first time in 1988 without subtitles. Apparently that is how it was perceived by the communist authorities, since according to Wajda's interview, Polish critics were ordered from above to give it favorable reviews. But I now see it as being a less sentimental, more accurate portrayal of the dilemma of industrialization than Charles Dickens ever offered his reading public.

One of the true gems of this "Director's Cut" is the interview with Wajda where they show the still of him receiving his Oscar and looking not so thrilled at getting pecked on the cheek by his presenter--the lovely but by then highly controversial Jane Fonda. (In private Polish society I heard Fonda sometimes referred to disparagingly as "Hanoi Jane" by Poles who said that "tylko w ameryce," was it possible to be so rich and successful and still so deprecating of one's own government.) The other moment to look for is the one where Wajda talks about how when his crew got their first look at the Lodz location for the factory shoots, they found looms with "Manchester, 1884" engraved on them which were still in operation in the 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars A Majestic story of Three Friends in 19th Century Poland.......2004-11-05

"Promised Land" (or "Ziemia Obiecana" in Polish) is a majestic story of three friends who come together to build a factory in Lodz during the 19th century. The friends, a Pole (as played by Daniel Olbrychski), a German, and a Jew, each need each others' resources and skills in making their dreams come true. However, both the German and Jew are advised by others not to deal with their Polish friend, as they believe it will come to no good end. In the 19th century, Poland was not on the map, as its neighbors (Germany, Russia, and Austria) partitioned it amongst themselves. This is the reason why German is occasionally spoken in the film and Rubles, a Russian currency, are mentioned.

The Polish man is a nobleman, but he cares little for his heritage or tradition. His thirst for wealth will put a strain on the friendship of the trio and a love affair he has with the wife of a wealthy Jew will cause them all more problems than they would ever expect.

In general, the businessmen of the time are corrupt, the workers are abused, and the story that unfolds is tragic. The film itself is beautiful. With haunting and dramatic music, this colorful time in history is interestingly portrayed. The factories are grim and stark, which contrasts with the splendid palaces where the wealthy live. "Promised Land" gives us a glimpse into the past and a chance to witness the poverty of the many and the wealth of the few.

"Promised Land," directed by Andrzej Wajda, is an exceptional film of the type that has earned him world fame. This new director's cut of this 1974 film is 138 minutes in length. "Promised Land" is spoken in Polish, with parts in other languages. This film has optional English subtitles. At times the film is gory and often tragic, but entirely a captivating story, worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars a must for the cultured film connoisseur.......2004-04-02

This is an acclaimed film from the godfather of Polish cinema, Andrzej Wajda. Its message was acceptable to the communist regime in power when it was made, because it presents a rather harsh portrayal of pre-communist Poland, set in the late 1800s. Nevertheless the production values are quite high, and along with the quality acting and direction, they contribute to make this a memorable film.

That said, there was nothing overwhelmingly great about this film either. Its basically a story about three friends: one Polish, one German, and one Jewish, who are building a factory and experience trials and tribulations along the way. The Poles certainly appear to lack the grace of more westerly continentals, both in costume and appearance. There is plenty of long dramatic dialogue broken by a few brief kinky naked scenes (...).

I watched this shortly after seeing Schindler's List, and I found it quite interesting in that it has a number of Jewish characters and we get a glimpse of how they existed in Polish society before the terrible events which later occurred. The scenes of cobblestone streets and horse drawn carriages also evoked a wonderful mood of nineteenth century life. I think this film would be worth watching to someone with an interest in Poland or anyone who just wants to expand their horizons a bit. Don't go out of your way to see it, but you could do a lot worse.

        Product Description

Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land provides a striking comparison of U.S. and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how structural distortions in U.S. coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This pivotal documentary exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported. Through the voices of scholars, media critics, peace activists, religious figures, and Middle East experts, Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land carefully analyzes and explains how--through the use of language, framing and context--the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza remains hidden in the news media, and Israeli colonization of the occupied terrorities appears to be a defensive move rather than an offensive one. The documentary also explores the ways that U.S. journalists, for reasons ranging from intimidation to a lack of thorough investigation, have become complicit in carrying out Israel's PR campaign. At its core, the documentary raises questions about the ethics and role of journalism, and the relationship between media and politics. Interviewees include Seth Ackerman, Mjr. Stav Adivi, Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Hanan Ashrawi, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Neve Gordon, Toufic Haddad, Sam Husseini, Hussein Ibish, Robert Jensen, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Karen Pfeifer, Alisa Solomon, and Gila Svirsky.

          Album Description

The first ever DVD to feature one of the major Gothic rock bands of the last twenty five years - Skeletal Family. Along with Sisters Of Mercy and The Cult - Skeletal Family led the charge of the gothic punk brigade in the early 1980's. The band formed in Keighley, West Yorkshire in 1982, taking their name from a track on David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" album. Their first single "Trees / Just A Friend" soon caught the attention of John Peel at Radio One - who's support boosted the single into the independent charts. The band soon signed with independent Red Rhino (and later with Chrysalis Records) and went on to achieve major success in the UK independent chart (with four top ten singles in a row - three of which are featured on this DVD). Line-up changes have occurred throughout the band's twenty-four year history, but they are still going strong to the present day - touring around the UK and in Europe, playing all the main Goth festivals. "Promised Land" features an in-depth collection of live clips, promos and interview, spanning the whole of the band's career - and includes four UK Independent chart top hits.

5 out of 5 stars Faith Lessons Open So Many Doors.......2005-09-01

I've studied the Bible all my life and must admit, sometimes Bible lessons seem to cover the same ground. But I learned so many things about the Bible that I never heard before! The insights these lessons give offer much larger and clearer understanding of God's words to us. I thought the first lesson was fantastic, but it seemed that each lesson was even beter than the last. I literally cried at some points!
