Disney's triumph expertly blends live-action and animation, and boasts a delightful score by the Sherman Brothers, including "A Spoonful Of Sugar", "Chim-Chim-Cher-ee", and "Feed The Birds". Veteran troupers Ed Wynn, Reginald Owen and Arthur Treacher lend colorful support, and Van Dyke is an appealing song and dance man, though his Cockney accent fails him. The real draw of course is the irresistible Andrews, who won the Oscar in her first starring role. Best for younger children, and young-at-heart parents.

Practically Perfect in Every Way. Until the Last Hour........2007-05-03

There's a stretch of Mary Poppins, from around "The Perfect Nanny" until "I Love to Laugh," that really is perfect. Pure magic. But then that ending just drags and drags. The beauty of the movie, during that enchanting middle section, is that it is spirited and breathtaking, and delivers a message without being preachy. But then, shortly after the gang find themselves laughing to the point that they float to the ceiling, the energy starts to leak out of the movie. I appreciate that attention spans were longer a generation ago. But, two hours and twenty minutes for a children's musical? Could anyone- even back then- have really wanted to watch more of the Banks father being emasculated? There is "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and "Step in Time" to break up the heavy handed morality, and then Mr. Banks' rebirth as a `quality-time' father is demonstrated briefly by his interest in kites. Don't get me wrong. I'm down with the messages: The pursuit of money and status doesn't guarantee happiness. Don't forget to appreciate and nurture your kids. You don't have to sacrifice limit-setting to be playful, and so on. But there's something annoying about having that message remastered, repackaged, and forcefully delivered by the encroaching, ubiquitous Disney colossus.

Mary Poppins does a tremendous piece of family therapy with the Banks. While one can find elements of structural family therapy in her work, she mainly uses a strategic approach, focusing less on insight and understanding and instead adopting a directive and authoritative stance to manipulate the elements of symptoms, metaphors, hierarchy, and power that form the secret language of the Banks family. In fact, there is no better illustration of a paradoxical intervention than when she sings the lullaby "Stay Awake." The late Jay Haley himself must have marveled at her technique. And it is a wonderful talent that allows Mary Poppins the character, as well as Julie Andrews the actress, to act in an authoritarian manner while projecting enough playfulness and charm to secure the alliance with not just the kids but the parents. Magic doesn't hurt the transference either.

Anyway, the stuff that's great is really priceless and well worth it. You should probably slog through the movie all the way at least once, perhaps in a few sittings, but then after that you can select to view just the musical numbers with the kids. Some of the behind-the-scenes bonuses are worth watching. It's always interesting to see how the creative process works, the little serendipitous moments that add up to brilliance.

I think I'm done. I managed to get through this review without saying "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." By the way, "dociousaliexpilisticfragicalirupus" is not strictly speaking the same word backwards. They throw in that "rupus" at the end to throw us off, but the rest of it is made up of roots, some of them multisyllabic, intact but in reverse order. Just wanted to mention that.

Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. We love this movie! The Jim Henson's Muppets and David Bowie's charm make this a wonderful movie for the entire family, totally entertaining in many ways. I grew up on it, and now our children are!

If you love magic and fairytales this is the movie for you! Granted it is a bit older, but David Bowie plays a great role and sings you into this magical world. I had never seen it and bought it because he was in it. My stepmother loves him too so of course I bought her a copy. If you have young ones or are just young at heart this is the movie for you!!!

I think the title say's it all. I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid, it was a big thing in my home as I grew up listening to Bowie right down from his Ziggy days. I had forgotten how that felt until my daughter came home one afternoon telling me about this movie her teacher showed the class during the last week of school... I can't remember exactly how she explained her view of the movie, but I knew exactly what she was talking about and began singing some of the songs in it... "You remind me of the babe.. The Babe? The babe with the power....." And she beamed a brilliant smile as she said "Yes! that one..." To this day, that movie gets more play then any disney movie my kids have.. They adore watching that movie.. often going round singing the very same somes... I was glad of the reminder my daughter brought hoem of a childhood long since gone. Even more that I found the movie..

Way before she grabbed an Oscar nomination for her searing performance as a world-weary prostitute in Leaving Las Vegas, Elisabeth Shue was known as one of the squeaky-clean actresses of the '80s. Set in the John Hughes-style suburbs of Chicago, the titular adventures follow babysitter Chris (Shue), who agrees to watch the Anderson kids (Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton) when her boyfriend cancels their anniversary date. All is quiet on the home front until Chris is called upon to rescue her best friend (Penelope Ann Miller, also doing good-girl duty) from the seedy downtown bus station. She can't leave the kids, and she can't leave her friend alone in the big bad city, so she packs everyone in the station wagon and heads into Chicago. Screwball craziness begins as they encounter car thieves, knife-wielding gangs, gun-toting truck drivers, and, worst of all, Chris's duplicitous boyfriend. It's hardly mature entertainment, but Shue makes it work; when she wins over the audience at a blues club with her improv singing, you'll be won over, too. In his directorial debut, Chris Columbus (who later went on to helm the sap-fests Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone) gently skewers the suburbia white-bread mindset of the main characters, and plays up the comedy over the schmaltz with a subtlety of which he now seems incapable; the near romance between Shue and Coogan is played lightly and adorably. This movie always makes me laugh... esp the part in the phonebox "get out of my house!" This is a good movie for a quiet nite at home and to have a laugh...very 80's!

Still A Favorite.......2007-05-09

I purchased this movie for my 4 year old daughter. It was one of my favorite movies when it came out on video (I was in high school at the time). I still love this movie! I don't watch much TV, but my daughter watched this movie again last weekend and I found myself sitting down and catching a few scenes. It is such a great movie! I love it! Some of the clothing the characters wear (leggings) "date" the movie, but overall, the story line and film quality is like a "new release." There are a couple of instances of inappropraite language, but nothing major. I'm so glad this movie is available on DVD. This movie is definitely a "buyer." One of my other all time favorite movies is "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" with Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.

Good Comedy/Adventure.......2007-04-11

When seventeen-year-old Chris Parker's boyfriend cancels their big date, she reluctantly agrees to baby-sit for Sara and Brad Anderson. Chris thinks she is too old to baby-sit but Brad doesn't mind - he has a huge crush on Chris. When Chris gets to the Anderson's, she has just settled in for what she thinks will be a very boring evening when she gets a phone call from her friend Brenda who is stuck at a bus station in "The City". Chris agrees to pick up Brenda and has to take Sara, Brad, and Brad's friend Daryl, with her for what she hopes will be a quick trip. Instead, a flat tire leads to all kinds of adventures including a crazed tow truck driver; a stolen car ring; a gang fight; a visit to a Blues Bar; a frat party; a meeting with "Thor" (Sara's hero); and a heart stopping chase down the side of an office building. Suddenly, what looked to be one of the most boring nights of Chris's life turns out to be one of the most exciting.

"Adventures in Baby Sitting" is a good fun movie, the kind you can watch without thinking too much about it - the kind of movie that keeps you smiling the whole time you are watching it. Nothing in it is to be taken seriously (for one thing Brad is way too old to need a babysitter) and while there are bad guys, they are never too scary and the kids easily outsmart them. The film is non-stop action and there are a lot of fun scenes in the movie. The scene in the Blues Bar is an instant classic. This is a good family movie, but parents should be aware that there is some colorful swearing (but in a very funny scene). The acting is good. Elisabeth Shue shines as Chris; Keith Coogan is good as the love struck Brad; Maia Brewton is wonderful as Sara; and Anthony Rapp is sufficiently annoying as Darryl. Of the supporting cast, Calvin Levels is a standout as Joe Gipp, the not so bad car thief.

"Adventures in Babysitting" is a great comedy/action film.

This movie is about a man, an immature, irresponsible kind of guy who loves his kids. How can you help but to love a dad who would do anything to be with his children, including dressing up as a woman in order to be their caregiver? It is refreshing to see a movie that shows a father's devotion and love in such a positive light. Robin Williams is a wonderful versatile actor and always gives a fantastic performance no matter what type of role he is playing. And Sally Field is adorable as usual. The family interaction is delightful throughout. This movie is funny, poignant, and entertaining for children and adults alike, a definite family movie sure to be enjoyed by all.

Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. John Carpenter's first and best entry in a long series, this movie gives the slasher pic a good name (that is, until you sit through all those pale re-treads). This lean feature works because it's both original and daringly basic: Laurie is a young teenage girl up against a monster, with only her wits and her two feet to protect her from the wrong end of a large butcher knife. Will Laurie and her young charges make it to Thanksgiving? You'll remain on the edge of your seat finding out.

THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME........2007-06-23

I just picked up this movie the other day and i have been a huge fan of the halloween series all my life and just never had the original. I never knew how much I lovede it until yesturday. This movie is awsome and John Carpenter and Debra Hill are genuises. Half the movie is shot in mid day and is still as scary as if was shot in night.This is Jamie lee curtis best film and does a great job in it. I also love Michael is this one the way he walks and such. Anyway pick up this movie it's awsome.

When John Carpenter gave form to "The Shape", aka Michael Myers, he crafted a chilling story of suspense around this murderer. Before the stupid "sister storyline", the attempt at turning Myers into some supernatural bogeyman, or the reboot which only tarnished the original further (Sorry, but Jamie Lee has definitely lost what acting skills she once had), there was the tale of a child who simply was...evil. He came home on Halloween night to relive the horror of his first murder. He was not a man. He was, pure and simply, evil. Now why did we need to know more than that?

The oldest sister of all psycho-thrillers: a modern revision of the boogeyman's myth shot in 1978 by John Carpenter, probably the only horror movies artisan still in action. Although many of the rudiments of psycho movies can be already find in the first italian giallos and, of course, in Hitchcock's "Psycho", its very calculated prologue contains as if it was a manual all the leit-motives of the genre: the use of the subjective camera and the steadycam for supporting the suspense scenes; atmospherical travellings; obssessive and disturbing sound effects and cold-blood murders. Proving once more that to suggest is more effective than to resort to explicit shots, and looking for a pure horror show without gratuitous violence Carpenter reinvents wisely through the tradition in this very smart and stylised horror classic: for example, the suggestion that colour white can hold a devilish connotation is already in Edgar Poe's " The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". Director Stephen Herek and writers Neil Landau and Tara Ison present us with a tale that requires a lot of suspension of disbelief.
This 1991 flick focuses on the chaotic life of the Crandell Family, headed by a single mother (Concetta Tomei) who is to vacation in Australia for three months.
She leaves her five children in the care of octogenarian Mrs. Struak (Eda Reiss Merin), who appears nice on the surface, but who proves to be a tyrannical martinet once Mrs. Crandell leaves. Luckily, her tyranny is cut short after less than a day with her sudden death.
Rather than calling the authorities, the children dispose of her in front of a funeral home, and the oldest child, Sue Ellen(Christina Applegate), takes a job at a hot dog stand when they discover that the money their mother left for household expenses was with the corpse.
Sue Ellen's co-worker and High School sweetheart, Bryan (Josh Charles),
tries to rekindle a romance. But Sue Ellen moves on, using a fake resume to get a job with a fashion firm. She is mistakenly employed as an executive when she only wanted the receptionist's position. But her new boss, Rose Linsey, (Joanna Cassidy)is deeply impressed. Rose is dating co-worker, Gus (John Getz), who makes advances towards the pretty ingenue. Co workers Bruce, and Cathy (David Duchovny, Kimmy Robertson) try to discredit Sue Ellen.
At home Sue Ellen's brother Kenny ( Keith Coogan, with the acting chops of grandfather Jackie) begins a transition from a pot smoking slacker to an efficient household manager and cook. Younger siblings, including softball player, Melissa, lovelorn Zach, and adventerous Walter (Danielle Harris, Christopher Pettiet, and Robert Hy Gorman) fall in line as well.
Inevitably, there are critical missteps, and Sue Ellen gives herself and her siblings one more chance fore redemption before turning everyone in. Watch for a scene of Kenny and Sue Ellen sparring like an old married couple.
Sue Ellen is slated to give a fashion presentation, and with a lot of help from their friends, the Crandell kids pull it off brilliantly.
But Sue Ellen's lies are soon exposed, and Mom comes home and pulls the plug.
No matter. Rose expresses her gratitude for the teenager's help during the summer, and may help her get into college.
Mrs. Crandell is impressed by her oldest son's reinvention of himself, and the positive aspect of this story is that the kids inspire their friends to have a sense of direction for their lives as well.
The whereabouts of the babysitter's remains seem rather irrelevant in the end.

John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. Uncle Buck is absolutely hilarious, and no better actor then John Candy to play this role! Uncle Buck is a Slobby, Unorganized, Middle-Aged Man, and is asked by his brother to stay over his house, so he can take care of his 3 kids, while he and his wife are out of town visiting her sick father. Even though Uncle Buck seems like a careless slob, we get to see his paternal side as we see how he actually really cares for each of these children. Best scenes are the ones where he has to look after the oldest child who is a rebellious teenage girl, also starring in this film is a very young Macaluay Culkin and Gaby Hoffman as the 2 younger children. This movie is a classic, and I totally recommend it! Not to mention that it's a John Hughes film.

"Are We There Yet" gets $18 million, but THIS BOMBS???.......2005-02-05

They're essentially the same movie, only "Bebe's Kids" is actually funny. Faizon Love's voice, as Robin Harris, is spot-on (a bit eerie, in fact), and the story is told part cartoony / part naturally. From Bruce Smith, the creator of Disney's "The Proud Family", it contains a few rap-music numbers ("He Ain't Havin' It" being the best) that threaten to derail the story, but they're brief enough to ignore.

The transfer is typical Paramount non-remastered conversion from film stock, but it's finally in widescreen (I even caught a joke that's missing from the fullscreen tape) and has good sound. You'll need that to catch the mass of infectiously quotable lines aplenty.

A Movie Worth Watching With a Comfortable Feel to It.......2006-07-02

Watched the 1988 movie "Mystic Pizza" today. It was one of the first movies for the female leads Julia Roberts , Annabeth Gish (native of Cedar Falls, Iowa), and Lili Taylor. Interestingly, Gish's name appears before Roberts in the credits at the end. Gish has gone on to a productive career, mostly in television, Taylor has moved into a career in more independent, quirky movies while Roberts has gone on to...well, you know.

I read Roger Ebert's review and he gave the movie 3 1/2 starts (out of 4) when it came out. I wouldn't rate it that high (maybe 2 1/2 or 3 out of 4), but the movie has kind of a comfortable feeling to it and gets better as it goes along. You don't see many movies about work & work environments these days and I think the scenes in the Mystic Pizza Parlor are pretty good. The romantic storylines are pretty standard and as Ebert says, "The movie isn't really about three girls in love; it's about three girls discovering what their standards for love are going to be." All-in-all I liked the movie. Oh, and watch carefully for Matt Damon in his big-screen debut!

Julia Roberts pre-Pretty Woman. In Mystic, Conneticut, four Portugese-American friends (including 2 sisters) have one last summer together before heading off to begin their adult lives. One bound for Yale, another headed for a walk down the aisle, and two more working as waitresses trying to find themselves. Each find romance and the challenges of it. It's a great take on how the one summer before we must grow up, is one to savor.
