Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller dabbles a bit in some fascinating psychological crosscurrents between its characters, but it finally trades in all that rich material for extensive and gratuitous violence. Robert De Niro plays a serial rapist released from prison after 14 years. Angry because his appalled attorney (Nick Nolte) made it easy for him to be convicted, this monster is out to hurt Nolte's character through his wife (Jessica Lange) and daughter (Juliette Lewis). The themes of interlocking guilt and anger between these people suggests a smart film in the making. But the final act, set on a boat with De Niro's vengeful pervert attacking Nolte and the two women, takes a more unfortunate direction. Stick with the original (which starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, each of whom make a cameo appearance in this film). --Tom Keogh

Superior to Martin Scorsese's punishing 1991 remake, this 1962 thriller directed by J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) stars Robert Mitchum as a creepy ex-con angry at the attorney (Gregory Peck) whom he believes is responsible for his incarceration. After Mitchum makes clear his plans to harm Peck's family, a fascinating game of crisscrossing ethics and morality takes place. Where the more recent version seemed trapped in its explicitness, Thompson's film accomplishes a lot with a more economical and telling use of violence. The result is a richer character study with some Hitchcockian overtones regarding the nature of guilt. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
The original Cape Fear.......2007-06-27
Compared to Martin Scorsese's brutal re-make, J. Lee Thompson's original is a subtler, vastly more chilling exercise, with Mitchum's Cady a searing portrait of evil and barely contained violence. The story examines how the law can work against the innocent when the victimizer knows just how far he can go to harrass his victims with impunity. Peck is reliably stolid as Sam, Polly Bergen excels as jittery wife Peggy, and both Martin Balsam and Telly Savalas provide assured support playing a sheriff and private detective. Edge-of-your-seat entertainment.
Cape Fearful.......2007-06-13
The suspence in Cape fear is thick as the humidity of a Carolina summer. Robert Mitchum wasone of the greatest actors he made it look easy and always gave the effort the role required. Cape fear was great, the storm was scary. Gregory Peck and the supporting cast do a good job.Better than the remake. One of the best psycological thrillers.
Top Notch Thriller .......2007-03-19
The original version of Cape Fear is as thrilling in its presentation as any modern thriller or suspense. It has a dark mood to it, creepiness, and requires a sense of restlessness on the part of the audience: all important facets to suspense. The dark mood of the film is personified within the first ten minutes of the film, as we see the malicious ex-con Max Cody (played by Robert Mitchum) lurk in the background of the court and then finally confront the man who he seeks revenge on, lawyer Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck). Bowden doesn't immediately recognize Cody, and this only seems to engage his sinister nature even more. Bowden, from this point on, must do all he can to protect not only himself, but his family against this man.
Perhaps what makes this film work is simply Mitchum's performance of Max Cody. There is a despicable nature about Cody, a hard-edge persona there for the viewer to see, but there is still something else about his mannerisms that really get under your skin. Unlike some outright villains, he is not so much an open book as manipulative in temperament. Instead of raging and raising his voice at injustices, he has a smirk on his face and a calm manner while planning and plotting, and this makes him even more mysterious and malevolent. He is a quintessential bad guy, and probably ranks among the most despicable characters in film history simply because of his relentlessness and perversion.
Without giving too much away, if there was one blemish, it would be the seemingly rushed ending of the film. It was somewhat satisfying, but it seemed as though there would be more to tell at the end. This, however, does not take away from the performances, and the over all affect of the film. Great movie to watch if you want to see a top-notch thriller!
4 1/2 stars
Gregory Peck .......2007-03-18
This is timeless, Gregory Peck is incredible. His role is similar to kill a mocking bird but the suspense is good old fashioned without all the horror of today's movies.
Very intensive.......2007-02-17
This is a very intensive movie with good directing and Mitchum shines. The photography is masterful and creates a tense atmosphere. This movie delivers and pkays very well with man's primitive insticts. Evil against good. You can predict the end but you are kept on your sear (or sofa).
Enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:
Scorsese's genre film.......2007-04-03
Max Cady (Robert DeNiro), a violent criminal, stalks his former defense lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), who he blames for his fourteen year sentence for rape. He is not entirely wrong, since Bowden buried a report on the victim's promiscuity out of certainty that Cady was guilty. Nobody is entirely innocent in Martin Scorsese's remake of a film noir thriller from the 60s. This moral complexity and intense work from the talented cast, which includes Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis, make for an involving suspense film. A major drawback, though, is Scorsese himself, who indulges in some jarringly self-conscious effects and choppy pacing. These flaws become less apparent as the film builds momentum toward its powerful climax. Strangely, this film from one of our most talented directors features the most egregious example of product placement I have ever seen. Joe Don Baker's bottle of Pepto Bismol is so prominent that it should have received fourth billing in the credits.
movie review.......2007-01-03
This is one of my favorite with Robert De Niro. It just scary enough without being rediculous. It has plenty of action and the acting is great.
Much better than the original.
Bad movie. Grueling, cruel, morally preachy........2006-10-26
Having seen and enjoyed the original Cape Fear, which is quite a thriller, I thought I'd enjoy this. Wrong!
This is not a thriller. It's an exercise in nastiness, cruelty, viciousness, hysteria and wild overacting. Scorcese takes a hideous villain and tries to make him somehow admirable -- but he's not. He's scuzzy, and remains so. And the family that's being tormented is portrayed as a bunch of awful people as well.
After being disgusted by this movie and its sick characters, I read a comment by Scorsese that he didn't like any of the characters in the movie and wished he could have killed off all of them, but the studio wouldn't let him. It shows. He invented these people from scratch, and they're all revolting.
De Niro is frantic but throughly uninteresting as the villain. And while it's dragging us through the mud, the movie moralizes all the while that it's meant to "educate" us.
This is a bad movie, plain and simple. Mean and nasty, ugly, uninspired, perverted and in a twisted way arrogant, preachy and moralistic. Like filth lecturing you how to be clean. Sorry, Marty, this is scummy junk.
Stay away.
Incredibly Tense.......2006-08-26
This is a white knuckle ride from beginning to end largely due to the creepy performance of Robert DeNiro as a tatooed bible quoting ex-con who is stalking the family of the attorney who had defended him before he spent 14 years in prison. As Jack Cady DeNiro gives one of his most bizarre performances, as he portrays a man who is both resourceful and obsessed with revenge.
The family played by Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis are a bit dysfunctional and Cady zeros in on their weaknesses and vulnerabilities like a bird of prey. All of the cast members are extraordinarily good in their respective roles.
The direction of Martin Scorcese creates a building tension from the opening shots through the final scene.
I deduct 1 star for the ending which goes a bit over the top and might have benefited from some additional editing but all in all this is a great horror tale of revenge by a psychopathic killer.
The Greatest Suspense Thriller of All Time.......2006-08-24
In this vicious remake of the 1962 classic starring Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden & Robert Mitchum as Max Cady, Martin Scorsese directed Robert De Niro as tatooted pyschopath Max Cady & Nick Nolte as Lawyer Sam Bowden whom him & his family are preyed upon by Cady, This as creepy as the movies get, terrifying shocker, De Niro is sadistically terrific, a human monster. If want a great suspense Thriller, see "Cape Fear" It's the best there is

"Cape Fear" is a classic example of psychological horror and suspense -- what if you and your family were being threatened by a conscienceless killer, yet had no way of stopping him? What lengths would you go to? This two-pack includes both the original 1962 version and the inferior 1991 remake.
The original stars Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden, a successful attorney, who seems to be living the American dream -- he has a beautiful house, a loving wife, sweet daughter, and lots of friends. Then one day, a man named Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) arrives in town; Bowden put him in prison for several years, and now he wants revenge.
But Cady doesn't directly attack Bowden or his family -- he begins a series of mind games, toying with Bowden's head by assaulting a young woman (who is too frightened to speak out), following Bowden's daughter at school, and subtlely threatening Mrs. Bowden. Finally Bowden hires a trio of thugs to attack Cady, but that backfires. Finally, the desperate Bowden stashes his family aboard a houseboat, and lies in wait to finish Cady off when he finally comes...
The remake has the same general plot, but Scorsese tries to beef it up and make it edgier, making Cady a tattooed thug and making Nick Nolte's Bowden almost as creepy and sleazy as Cady. And while the idea of the plot is decidedly creepy, it doesn't fit in the 1990s, when stalking laws had been put into place.
Unfortunately, Scorsese doesn't seem to understand what made the original such a horrific experience -- the THREAT of Cady raping the wife and daughter is more ominous than having Cady seduce the girl. Moreover, making Bowden a sleazy, adulterous creep undermines the whole point of the original movie -- a good man driven to possible crimes to protect his family.
While Nolte's portrayal of Bowden is almost nauseating, Gregory Peck's performance is outstanding. Peck was usually cast as the straight-shooter, but here that casting is twisted as Bowden is willing to even descend to murder if it keeps his wife and daughter from being attacked. Robert De Niro is miscast as Cady in the remake, turning him into a run-of-the-mill thug without the brains for a cat-and-mouse game. Mitchum, on the other hand, is eerily, creepily effective as a superintelligent stalker-rapist. (Censoring of the time did not allow direct references to rape, but it's an overhanging threat)
The original "Cape Fear" is a magnificently horrific suspense movie, with a dynamic cast and solid script. Just don't bother with the remake -- it's the twisted twin of the original.

Enjoy it.

--Tom Keogh
If want a great suspense Thriller, see "Cape Fear" It's the best there is

bizzare tv, but excellent.......2005-10-08
i picked this up, purley because i am a huge ac/dc fan. i didnt really know what to expect. i really enjoyed it, but if you are not a fan of brian johnson, dont pick this up. i was lucky enough to meet the man three times and he is being himself here.
i hope he does more work like this.... there is one small bad element, where he keeps asking the same question over and over again.... other than that. excellent...
Entertaining but..........2005-09-25
...no, he doesn't know much about the history. Yes, he did do some homework on the subject, but this was more about its entertainment value and is home-movie quality at best. There are some awkward moments as he tries to "interview" some of the locals. And some of the things he says about what he is observing is just plain incorrect. But if you're in the mood to watch Brian be funny for about a half hour, then by all means pick this up...
BRIAN JOHNSON, CUSSING, DRINKING, ROLLING THROUGH GREECE.......2005-09-22
AC/DC'S BRIAN JOHNSON RULES!!Didn't know what to expect. This was so hot! It is a really funny transition from the PBS type TV program to the out takes. He can out cuss a sailor, out drink the locals and still maintain! The scenery is awsome and his knowledge of history is amazing.
Totally different side of the AC/DC mouth man. Hope this isn't the last acting he does. Love it!
