Paul Robeson is today known for little more than singing "Ol' Man River" in Showboat, but this hefty and potent collection from Criterion (seven movies and a rich trove of documentary features and commentaries) should return Robeson to much-deserved cultural awareness. An imposing, charismatic black actor who demanded respect when most black actors were trapped in mammy and minstrel roles, and a singer whose deep, rolling voice won him acclaim on the concert stages of Europe, Robeson was among the most significant performers of the 20th Century--until the 1950s, when the U.S. government suspended his passport out of fear that Robeson's commitment to social progress and civil rights would project a negative view of America. But even before then, Robeson's career took place outside of the establishment channels of Hollywood. Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist includes two silent films (Body and Soul, a melodrama railing against the hypocrisies of the church, made by the pioneering black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux; and Borderline, a startlingly inventive story of an interracial love rectangle, made by film theorist Kenneth Macpherson), both given additional vitality by contemporary jazz scores; three movies from Robeson's rich period in England (Sanders of the Valley, Jericho, and The Proud Valley, which chart both Robeson's rising social conscience and his increasing clout in the industry); Robeson's most significant Hollywood film, The Emperor Jones, adapted from the Eugene O'Neill play that shot Robeson to stardom in the first place; and the movie that probably reflected Robeson's social beliefs more than any, the remarkable and riveting semi-documentary Native Land, which Robeson narrated.

Robeson is one of those rare actors, like Bette Davis or Humphrey Bogart, whose performances drive his movies as much as the director or the screenplay. Much is made of Robeson's powerful voice and intimidating physique, but just as impressive are his piercing eyes; in every role, a questing intelligence bursts through, looking at the world and cutting through charades and illusions. Criterion packages always have phenomenal extras, but Portraits of the Artist is unusually complex because Robeson's life is as important to his stature as his movies. These excellent features capture the world around Robeson, a world that both raised him up and tore him down. Far from a musty historical document, this is a film package that matters, which will reward and surprise viewers used to conventional notions of Hollywood and America. --Bret Fetzer

Description

All-American athlete, scholar, renowned baritone, stage actor, and social activist, Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was a towering figure and a trailblazer many times over. He made perhaps his biggest impact, however, in the medium of film. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson managed to become a top-billed movie star around the world during the time of Jim Crow America, always striving to use film to educate viewers about equality, democracy, and the rights of workers. Though he eventually left movies behind, using his international celebrity to speak on behalf of those denied their civil liberties and ultimately becoming a victim of ideological persecution himself, Robeson left a film legacy that continues to speak eloquently of the long and difficult journey of a courageous and outspoken African American.

1 out of 5 stars Gina Gershon had to ownsomeone money!.......2006-06-02

Gina Gershon is one of the best actresses around now and usually makes really good choices of movies. This one wasn't a good choice. The acting, other than Gina, is horrid - although this isn't one of Gina's shining moments. The writing is so much worse than the acting - a 12 year old could have come up with better lines. The end teases a twist but then takes it away and just ends. There are a few too many loose ends that I would have liked to have seen tied up but we all can't have everything. If you're looking for a good Gina Gershon movieor a good thriller don't pick this one.

4 out of 5 stars GINA AS LOVING MOTHER!.......2006-05-22

Gina Gershon is my favorite, modern day actress, who is to often given inferior scripts and roles where she usually is cast as a gorgeous, sexy, and (often dangerous)lady. While I certainly don't mind GINA "strutting her stuff",I do wish Hollywood would give her better roles. In "Lies and Whispers" she is smart, touching, and sexy,an oustanding performance,I wish she would be given more multi-dimensional roles.I think she would be GREAT in comedy, which when given the opportunity she delivers tart lines in the best Joan Blondell-Ann Sheridan tradition.

In "Boderline" she is a loving mother of two girls, but is caught in a nasty custody battle with ex-husband,and she has recurring nightmares, from her childhood, which has left her with terrible mental scars. When here ex-husband and his girlfriend are brutally murdered GINA is the number one (1) suspect and put under more mental pressure.GINAs' performance is what raises this film to a 4-star level. She handles her role with tenderness, warmth, and just the right amout of mental anguish. Please, Hollywood do justice to GINAs' talents and give her the roles she (and her fans) deserve.

The supporting cast includes Sean Patrick Flannery,Michael Biehn, and from the original "DAMN YANKEES",Rea Allen,as a symphatic friend of Ginas'is fine.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent movie . Gina Gershon stole the show!.......2004-06-16

Gina Gershon has never been best. She makes the sixty % in this film. She deserves major opportunities and I expect this film adds the expected desire in future projects.
Sean Patrick Flannery is a young promise and makes a credible role.
The script works out with organical flow . There are innovative situations that keep your attention and hold to your seat. The increasing mistery slowly goes involving you to a satisfactory ending.
The direction is another positive point to remark.
A little gem that might become in a status cult movie . In my opinion this film got it!

5 out of 5 stars Gershon's best since Bound!.......2003-08-01

It's been a long time since ýBoundý, and a long time since Gina Gershon lived up to the potential she showed in that amazing film. Well ýBorderlineý may not be in quite the same class, but it is a smartly written and directed little film with a great central performance by Gershon. She's darkly sexy and enigmatic, but she's also very credible as a mom screwed over by the system. The film has lots of style, good music, and an ending that makes you rethink the whole movie. An entertaining and sexy thriller.

    Book Description

A straightforward introduction for therapists, this video addresses fundamental questions about the nature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), its causes, and how it can effectively be treated with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Dr. Linehan begins by presenting clinically relevant features of BPD and describing the underlying causes of the disorder, with an emphasis on biosocial factors. Segments of actual therapy sessions illustrate the emotional dysregulation that characterizes BPD and the intense distress that sufferers experience. Dr. Linehan discusses the development of DBT, which arose out of her realization that traditional treatments were not working with this client population, and clearly lays out its concepts and principles.

In an especially compelling feature, the video includes live interview sessions between Dr. Linehan and Allen J. Frances, Chairman of the DSM-IV Task Force. In these probing dialogues, Dr. Frances asks Dr. Linehan the nuts-and-bolts questions all clinicians want answered about how DBT works and what its advantages are over other therapies.

      Book Description

An important component of DBT is the use of skills training to help manage the extreme beliefs, actions, and attitudes that form the criteria for borderline personality disorder. In actual therapy sessions, the video shows Dr. Linehan teaching patients the use of such skills as mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation. Vividly depicting the various stages of treatment, this program shows how DBT helps clients decrease negative behaviors and work toward personal goals. Designed for therapists, the video is also suitable for use in client and family education.

3 out of 5 stars Genre Challenged But Good.......2006-05-16

"Borderline" doesn't know what it wants to be....it's a collision of genres, comedy and police drama with the lighter side dominating. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I didn't once look at my watch. The humorous lines are genuinely funny especially from Claire Trevor. There are little nuances that add so much to a scene. Without delivering a spoiler, there's a scene where MacMurray and Trevor are at the house of the local sheriff. The bit with the sheriff's daughter lends a nice touch of humor to an otherwise functional scene. There are a lot of these nuances either in action or dialogue throughout the movie. I would say that if you are looking for a good crime drama from this era, you might be disappointed. If however you go into the movie knowing it's not typical of the genre, you should be able to meet it on its own terms and have fun. I do recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars South of the Border Fun.......2005-09-12

This fun and funny crime caper has a great cast and lots of south-of-the-border flavor that makes it an entertaining 88 minutes at the movies. William A. Seiter's Borderline is a nifty little film that has more in common with The Big Steal than the noir film it is often advertised as. It is a blend of humor, crime and fun that grows on you more and more until its snappy ending.

It seems both the L.A.P.D. and United States Treasury Customs wants to stop a dope smuggling ring bringing narcotics across the border from Mexico. Claire Trevor is the enthusiastic if green L.A. cop Madeline Haley, a former O.S.S. agent who talks her way into the assignment of going down south in an attempt to get information on the nasty middleman Pete Ritche, hoping it will lead them to Mr. Big. TV's Perry Mason, Raymond Burr, is the heavy in the white suit, Ritche, and plays the role with menace.

Madeline sort of stumbles into Ritchie but before she can find anything out, Johnny Mackland, an unknown player working for the L.A. end of the connection, hijacks Ritchie's gold so he can make a deal for the next shipment. He ends up taking Madeline with him after the guns are drawn and the chase is on.

The chase across Mexico, as they try to avoid Ritchie and elude the cops is a lot of fun. Madeline and Johnny start telling each other tall tales and warming up to each other along the way. When Johnny's pal Miguel gets shot they have a body on their hands to deal with, complicating the chase even more. Fred MacMurray is good as Johnny, the cop who doesn't know Madeline is a cop, who doesn't know he's a cop!

Sort of a fun pulp film with more flavor than a habanero pepper, Trevor gives a cute performance as she begins to like Johnny, even getting a bit jealous of the oh so friendly young and pretty daughter of a not too smart Mexican cop. He unknowingly helps them garner a plane to Encinada for the big deal. As the two near the border, each regrets having to turn the other one in because they've fallen for each other.

Once they get straightened out on just who works for who, a rousing shoot-out with Ritchie and his gang climaxes a great ending to this very fun to watch film. A film that's meant as entertainment, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither should you. Fans of genre films like this will enjoy going south of the border with this one.

      4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2005-04-11

Borderline is a fun, early 50s crime drama, played with some humor. The chase across Mexico plotline is similar to Robert Mitchum's The Big Steal.

In addition to moving along nicely, Borderline has three other special qualities. First, as always, Claire Trevor is great. Second, you get to see Fred McMurray and Raymond Burr play bad guys and third, this seems to be one of the only oldies.com DVDs with good quality.

4 out of 5 stars You two work very well together.......2004-04-26

Madeleine Haley (Claire Trevor) is an ambitious member of the Los Angeles Police Department. When the chief calls for a "tawdry dame" to infiltrate Pete Ritchie's (Raymond Burr) drug trafficking operations she pushes her way through a wall of male shoulders and lands the assignment.
Ritchie operates out of Mexico, and Madeleine contrives to throw herself at him until she sticks. Before she has a chance to let out a breath and settle into moll-dom Johnny McEvoy (Fred MacMurray) breaks in on the scene, manages to find out when "the stuff" is hitting the docks, and kidnaps Madeleine, presumably for insurance against the wrath of Ritchie.
Without giving anything away, McEvoy has a few secrets of his own, which he is able to keep from Madeleine but which the viewer is privy to early on. After Madeleine's abduction this becomes a chase movie. McEvoy and Madeleine drive north, away from Ritchie and towards customers for their "stuff." Of course, Madeleine intends to turn McEvoy over to the authorities as soon as they hit the border, so she'd better not fall for him.
MacMurray and Trevor have good chemistry together. A few of their scenes sparkle, and they're convincing as people who are trying not to believe the worst of each other. Raymond Burr is excellently sinister as the white suited bad guy. This is one menacing dude.
I've tried to understand why this one is so obscure. Good cast, nifty mistaken identity issues, interesting minor characters. BORDERLINE has a lot going for it, and I'll bet you not one in a hundred film buffs have ever heard of it, much less seen it.
Maybe it's because it doesn't quite know what it wants to be - it's kind of film noir, kind of a chase flick, kind of a light romantic comedy. Burr's character is menacing enough, but the director (William A. Seiter) never takes it to the next step. The scenes where MacMurray and Trevor are threatened by him are defused too quickly. Burr's last scene feels like the end of the movie, and it's an anti-climatic one, at that. By then the real danger is past. Maybe if the MacMurray character had been given a hard, inaccessible inner core (like Walter Neff in DOUBLE INDEMNITY, for example) we wouldn't find this one in the bargain bin at the used book store.
If not terribly memorable, BORDERLINE is entertaining enough. The cast is much better than the material they've been given.

2 out of 5 stars On The Borderline Of Sheer Boredom.......2000-09-13

Charles Bronson the man of action films was not his usual self in this film where he plays a chief border patrol officer who investigates illegal smuggling of imigrants led in by a sadistic killer played by Ed Harris(In his Film Debut)Hotchkiss. Who is backed up by an corrupt american bussinesman who uses these immigrants as slave labouers. Good story but had the people involved with this project showed a little more dramatic sequences to livin up the already bored viewer this could of been more of worthwhile effort. Bronson tries hard to show more acting but it seems like he rather blow some punk away with a service revolver like he did in `DEATH WISH` As for Harris who had a little more hair on his head at the time was a great villan but for the wrong film. It`s a shame his talent didn`t get noticed until he did THE ABYSS in 1989. The film wasted time trying to hammer into the audience`s minds the problem of illegal aleins being used for unstable working conditons and lost any good dramatic impact from it. There`s nothing wrong with bringing a message to the viewer but not at the expense of the entertainment value.

3 out of 5 stars Real Border Patrol Action.......1999-11-17

I first saw the movie in 1980 while a student at the Border Patrol Academy. I was trying to get an idea of what I was getting myself into. While the Border Patrol Agent's everyday on-duty life is not exactly as portrayed in the movie, this is the closest video to reality that is on the market. Charles Bronson is perfect for this role. In the movie, he is even wearing an old hat that a Border Patrol Agent gave him for the part. The USBP allowed the use of official emblems and badges and parts of the movie was filmed at an actual BP station. Of the three or four Border Patrol movies available, I think this one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining surprise!.......2006-03-23

"I'm trying to make up my mind, whether you have a touch of class or not." That's Fred MacMurray, talking to Claire Trevor as they are speeding down a dirt road in Mexico with a parrot cage full of drugs. They are both narcotics agents, but neither realizes this about the other. Oops, here's a wagon full of hay blocking the road; that balky donkey won't go. And, wow, it just got worse: the bad guys have just arrived. Lucky that Claire has that cigarette lighter!

It's fast-paced action, clever dialogue, silly situations and innocent romance between the two talented principals as they try to get back to the border. You will watch this movie over and over, and lend it to your buddies to enjoy. Treat yourself to some fun!

5 out of 5 stars South of the Border Fun.......2005-08-06

2 out of 5 stars Credit this informative review to Michael from Muskogee OK.......2003-10-17

This is a bland little crime drama that screams for a decent story line and script. Two undercover agents(Fred MacMurray and Claire Trevor)try to bust up a drug-smuggling ring in Mexico. The two not knowing the real identity of the other end up falling in love. MacMurray proves he can play any kind of role. Trevor seems out of place and wrong for the part. Raymond Burr plays a heavy in more ways than one. Also in the cast are: Jose Torvay, Roy Roberts and Don Diamond.

I would add to this that if you want great film noir with Clair Trevor then check out "Key Largo"; as for Fred Mac Murray, "Double Indemnity."
