Customer Reviews:
One of the BEST seasons ever! .......2007-06-23
I LOVED this season of Bewitched especially the Tabitha episodes like "I Dont Want To Be A Toad", "Tabitha's Weekend" & I loved the Serena episode of "Mrs Stephens Where Are You". Also LOVED "Weep No More My Willow" about Sam's willow tree! And Samantha's Shopping Spree is a funny one too with no Derwood included. This season was especially fun because there are a lot of NON Darrin episodes near the end of the season and they are more magical and no party poopers to mess up the fun like Derwood always did. I liked this season and season 4 the best....because they had some of the most fun and most magical episodes. While a lot of the reviewers are sad that this was York's last season. I thought there were some good Sargent episodes too like their Salem episodes in season 7. Not to mention the famous Jack & The Beanstalk episode in season 6. Sargent was a good Darrin though I do agree York was my favorite but really Derwood was not my favorite character any of the time. The only down side I can think of which is only a minor downer is this season does not feature any Aunt Clara episodes because the actress who portrayed her had passed away. But there are MORE Serena & Uncle Arthur fun this season which is good. I cant wait to have this season 5....its a good one....!!!
A Sad Farewell To Dick York In An Otherwise First Class Fifth Season.......2007-06-05
I believe the one thing above all else that really made the classic series "Bewitched", so special was the near perfect chemistry between actress Elizabeth Montgomery and actor Dick York as the beautiful housewife witch Samantha and her often harried but always loving husband Darrin. This well thought out teaming of two performers who were so compatible together and who actually seemed to be like a real husband and wife on screen certainly helped to carry "Bewitched", to the incredible success it enjoyed right from Episode One. By the beginning of Season Five, which is now happily being released onto DVD, the classic comedy series had really hit its full stride. With its ratings still high and with the show still collecting an annual batch of Emmy nominations the future for "Bewitched", looked very bright indeed. Season Five despite being very entertaining, as every true fan will know unfortunately has a dark side to it in that Dick York's ongoing back problems meant that he began to miss episodes as the show progressed through its fourth year and on into the fifth. About half way through Season Five with Dick York's health problems growing worse with him often unable to perform, the character of Darrin was repeatedly written out of many of the stories thus loosing that famed "Sam and Darrin", basis to the whole story. His characters absense was usually explained away by having Darrin "away on business", during the episode. Unfortunately York's health crisis didn't improve and he was forced to leave the series all together before the end of the season. It wasn't certain whether he would return for Season Six at that time which explains why an earlier filmed episode "Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City", was held back and shown as the last episode of Season Five.
Despite the tragedies going on behind the scenes during this season on "Bewitched", for the most part it's a terrific season with some wonderful episodes, a few of which even tackle some quite serious social issues that are timely even today. Ironically enough in the light of Dick York's declining health some of the earlier episodes in Season Five such as "Samantha's Wedding Present", and especially the classic "Mirror Mirror on the Wall" in my belief contain some of his greatest and very funniest work and give no indication of the terrible agony he was usually in with his back at this late stage of his involvement with "Bewitched".
Season Five of "Bewitched", holds some real favourites for me and a few of what I feel are the standout episodes are listed below.
"Samantha's Wedding Present", which introduces a more tanned and blonde Elizabeth Montgomery in a story borrowing heavily from the Sci Fi classic "The Incredible Shrinking Man", wherby Endora shrinks Darrin down to miniature size which causes him some harrowing experiences when he encounters the Kravitz's over sized new dog and is captured by an Irish drunk who thinks Darrin is a Leprechaun who he'll only release when he grants him three wishes.
"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall", a great favourite of mine with an absolutely hilarious performance by Dick York when Endora zaps a vanity spell on him making him the most egocentric and vain person imaginable. The sight of Dick York swishing around and camping it up in a Gold Lame Suit, hippy beads and Elvis-like sideburns will have you laughing out loud.
"Samantha's Super Maid", a great performance by Mabel Albertson as the interfering Mrs Stephens Snr. who forces Samantha to hire a new maid much to her and Darrin's opposition considering the witchcraft happening in the house all the time. Endora and Samantha join forces to undo Mrs Stephen's plans to "give Samantha more time away from home duties to socialise with the people who can help boost Darrin up the ladder of success".
"Going Ape", An episode Dick York missed but a very funny story of Tabitha changing an ape into a man who Larry feels has great potential for McMann and Tate's latest ad campaign. Desite his initial reluctance to allow Tabitha to change him back the Man/Ape gets bored with all the attention and with Samantha's help literally "goes ape", in the television studio causing complete mayhem and forcing Larry to fire him.
"Tabitha's Weekend", Another episode without Dick York but a great family domestic story when Phyllis attempts to have Tabitha stay for the weekend much to Samantha's opposition. Phyllis' plans however go astray when Endora and Samantha both also turn up causing all sorts of domestic tensions especially between long time rivals Endora and Phyllis. The resulting mayhem causes Phyllis to develop one of her famous "sick headaches".
"The Battle of Burning Oak", a wonderful story and another great favourite of mine where Endora turns Darrin into a terrible snob who aspires to join the exclusive Burning Oak Country Club. However when Samantha learns of the type of discrimination and "screening" used to gain membership, at the club she sets out to teach the snobs a very humbling lesson in tolerance and acceptance of others regardless of creed, colour, or status, with hilarious results. Samantha's catty lunch with the snobby "ladies", at the club is a comic highlight.
"Daddy Does His Thing", not really a great episode but significant to all "Bewitched", buffs in that this was the final episode Dick York actually filmed before collapsing with a massive seizure. Quite heart breaking to watch as you can clearly see for the first time how terribly ill Dick York was during its filming.
"Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City", an earlier episode held back to finish the season off with a Dick York appearance. Complications arise for Darrin when Endora casts a spell that makes him disappear everytime he attempts to speak Spanish to a potential client group while in Mexico City. Samantha saves the day with a few spells of her own that allows Darrin to deliver a long dinner speech in both English and Spanish.
Great Season..........2007-05-14
Bewitched Season 5 - Pre-order Release date July, 10, 2007
Bewitched Season 5 is a GREAT season and it will be the last season that Dick York will play the roll as Darrin Stephens. He will truly be missed after this season because he had such wonderful chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery and more so I believe than Sargent. No offence to Dick Sargent because they both played good roles but I do feel that York had better chemistry and was quite funny to watch.
Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) will sadly not be in this season or the rest of the seasons of Bewitched because she passed away from a sudden heart attack right before the filming of Bewitched Season 5. She will be surely missed!
I definitely recommend this season for any Bewitched fan!! There are many great shows on this set and Tabatha will have more show time as well. Another reviewer right before me has included a list of all the shows in this set so I decided not to duplicate it. I am buying this season because I am a big fan of the show and also to dedicate this set to Dick York because of his last appearances, I have not decided if I am going to purchase "Bewitched Season 6-8" yet because York will not appear but I may buy them to get a complete set.
Highly recommended!

Let's hope they give us some extras on this one; haven't seen too much of that since the release of the first season and there are some terrific documentaries on the cast and the show itself that could and should be issued at some stage. Enjoy!
Having a Bewitching time with Sam and the Gang .......2007-05-04
This is the 5th season of the eight year series and the final for Dick York as he became ill while filming the series and he had missed a lot of episodes in this season so Elizabeth Montgomery had to react with somebody who usually with David White (Larry Tate) and even with herself when she became Serena her cousin. the most memerable episode in this season for me is when Serena turned Darrin's mum into a cat as Phyllis was being very catty towards Sams family. Another episode I liked is when she collected money for UNICEF where a person wouldn't pay it so she haunted him until he paid it. So for all you Bewitched fans this is a must have. So I definately give a 5 out of 5 for this season. So I hope they will bring out the remainder of this series before this year is out.

An epic in length and breadth, this documentary aims at nothing less than a full-scale portrait of the most dominant institution on the planet Earth in our lifetime--a phenomenon all the more remarkable, if not downright frightening, when you consider that the corporation as we know it has been around for only about 150 years. It used to be that corporations were, by definition, short-lived and finite in agenda. If a town needed a bridge built, a corporation was set up to finance and complete the project; when the bridge was an accomplished fact, the corporation ceased to be. Then came the 19th-century robber barons, and the courts were prevailed upon to define corporations not as get-the-job-done mechanisms but as persons under the 14th Amendment with full civil rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (i.e., power and profit)--ad infinitum.
The Corporation defines this endlessly mutating life-form in exhaustive detail, measuring the many ways it has not only come to dominate but to deform our reality. The movie performs a running psychoanalysis of this entity with the characteristics of a prototypical psychopath: a callous unconcern for the feelings and safety of others, an incapacity to experience guilt, an ingrained habit of lying for profit, etc. We are swept away on a demented odyssey through an altered cosmos, in which artificial chemicals are created for profit and incidentally contribute to a cancer epidemic; in which the folks who brought us Agent Orange devise a milk-increasing drug for a world in which there is already a glut of milk; in which an American computer company leased its systems to the Nazis--and serviced them on a monthly basis--so that the Holocaust could go forward as an orderly process.
The movie goes on too long, circles too many points obsessively and redundantly, and risks preaching-to-the-choir reductiveness by calling on the usual talking-head suspects--Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Michael Moore. And except for an endlessly receding tracking shot in an infinite patents archive, there's scarcely an image worth recalling. Still, it maps the new reality. This is our world--welcome to it. --Richard T. Jameson

Fairly Representing Corporate Employees and Executives.......2007-07-04
A few things I'll never forget:
1. Never, ever drink milk unless it's organic. www.foxbghsuit.com/
Until, that is, our FDA decides to act conscientiously and ban the use of Bovine Growth Hormone as Europe and Canada have already done. The FDA won't do this until "the People" get angry about the issue and ask them to do so. We haven't gotten angry about it enough because people who don't seek out independent media sources haven't heard much about the adverse health effects. Contrary to popular belief, the United States doesn't have free press - a fundamental function of a well operating democracy. Fox "News" - a source of information and entertainment (infotainment) for many - bribed their journalists who'd done an investigative report on BGH and its distributors. FOX refused to air the story after BGH manufacturers, Monsantos, threatened to sue. FOX withheld vital information from the public in order to maintain good relations with its corporate buddies.
2. A LLC - limited liability corporation - is considered a person under our law, with rights and responsibilities as we do. However, the responsibilities only extend so far. Corporations are amoral and have essentially one function - to make profit. It is the only biding principle. They are required by law to make profit for their shareholders. Scary when you think about the implications.
3. How do you become more profitable - EXTERNALITIES. Put the loss on someone else. Make someone else pay so our profit margin increases. A prime example of an externality is the outsourcing of labor to another country. The externalities in this case would be 1) Financial and other loss invoked on local labor force who has been laid off and 2) Financial and other loss invoked on cheap labor force who is getting paid far less than what they should. Another example of this is seen in the privatized military corporations such as Blackwater that have placed undue financial burden on government. When one of their mercenary soldiers dies, the soldier's family is eligible for up to $4,000/month in compensation. That's our tax dollars paying for corporate soldier who made ten times as our soldiers and whose allegiance was paid to a corporation only who profited immensely from their death. Read Jeremy Scahill's Blackwater for more on that issue. Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army
4. IBM profited substantially from the Nazi machine. Individuals in the company knew it all along. You'll see.
BOVINE GROWTH HORMONE is giving us CANCER.......2007-06-29
BGH means no dairy product sold in USA is safe: not the cheap cheese I got on sale, not the Buttoni tortellini also on sale, not the 2 for 1 sour cream not the neufchatel cheese for rugelach and not the butter! There goes my baking, my homemade ice cream and my quick cheese fix. Aaargh!!!
Canada and Europe continue to ban BGH.
Rupert Murdoch's Fox looks pure creep in this and Michael Moore is sympathetic.
A Truly Chilling New Reality .......2007-06-08
The Corporation throws light on the rule of the few. With cameos from Michael Moore and Noam Chomsky. If this film does not move you to action.......
5 Star Content.......2007-05-29
The information in this DVD should be seen by everyone. I give the DVD 4 stars, however, because the direction and production could use some improvement. It's a bit slow.
Important Film.......2007-05-17
This film is one of the most important documentaries I've ever seen. It does an excellent job of informing us of what has warped our way of life that makes it so hard for us to be an independent people and a nation. Forget politics! Find out about the true power...Corporations.

Like The Passion of the Christ, Luther is the story of a spiritual leader, German monk Martin Luther (Joseph Fiennes), in opposition to the religious orthodoxy of the time (in his case, the 1500s). His goal--to bring God to the people and to take money, fear, and shame out of the equation--made him a reformer to some, a heretic to others. Released around the same time as Mel Gibson's blockbuster, it failed to attract the same degree of attention--or controversy. Granted, it's a different film, but not radically so. Directed by Eric Till (Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace), Luther isn't always easy to follow or as emotionally involving as it could be. That said, it's a fascinating story and Fiennes receives solid support from Alfred Molina (Frida), Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire), and the late Sir Peter Ustinov (Spartacus), in his final film role, as Frederick the Wise. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Outstanding Movie.......2007-06-11
This movie about one of the greatest men in the history of Christianity will bring tears to your eyes as you go through the journey of a monk made a hero of and for the faith in Jesus Christ. For the most part and for the limited knowledge I have on Martin Luther, this movie seems to be right on when it comes its historical accuracy. I am planning to watch it again and again.
EXCELLENT PRODUCTION DESIGN AND ACTING RECREATE PERIOD AND MAN.......2007-06-02
Eric Till (Bonhoeffer: Agent Of Grace) does a good job directing this bio pic of Martin Luther from a script by Camille Thomasson and Bart Gavigan. It is solid filmmaking with no sensational effects. It is acting - period. The time and place are Germany at the beginning of the 16th century, when the Catholic Church was selling indulgences like they were candy. It is also the eve of the Protestant Reformation, a period when it was dangerous to speak one's own mind. But Martin Luther had no problem with that, so his character is enthralling.
Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love, Enemy At The Gates) does a fine job playing Luther, as do Jonathan Firth (Victoria And Albert) as Girolamo Aleander, Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2, Frida) as Johann Tetzel, Claire Cox (Eragon) as Katharina von Bora, Peter Ustinov (Jesus Of Nazareth, Topkapi, Billy Budd, Spartacus, Quo Vadis) as Frederick the Wise and Bruno Ganz (Wings Of Desire) as Johann von Saupitz. The production design is strong, with superb cinematography, costumes and sets. It's feel for the period is uncanny.
Of course, the story centers around Luther's nailing his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg Church in 1517. Unfortunately, that scene is so underplayed, you could almost miss realizing what's happening. When Luther goes to nailing, nothing is said to indicate that these are the 95 Theses or that that is the Wittenberg Church. Yet, that is the event upon which the entire movie, Martin Luther's life, and the Protestant Reformation hang.
The second most important event is when Luther is standing before the Diet of Worms and is asked to recant his theses and the entire body of his works. That scene is handled very well, and is when Luther utters his famous words, "Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason - I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other - my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen." The words, "Here I stand, God help me, I cannot do otherwise," was never said by Luther.
For Luther not to do what the Church is asking means not only excommunication but to be burned at the stake. He knows that, so this is a very intense, very important, very courageous moment.
Fortunately for Luther, he has become a national hero to the German people, and a favorite of Frederick the Wise. So the Church is hindered from immediately carrying out their plans. Luther goes into hiding, with the help of Frederick, and it is during this period that he writes the German Bible. This further infuriates Church leaders, who ask the Emperor of Germany, Charles V (played with understatement by Torben Liebrecht), to demand that Luther be arrested and burned as an heretic.
This is the third great event. Charles calls together his princes and demands that they give him Luther, which they refuse to do by bowing before the Emperor with their heads lowered, indicating that they would rather be beheaded than give up Luther and their new Bible. This is a great scene - my favorite in the film - and shows how important it is that civil authorities support the Word of God in word and action. This is the moment when the Church lost it's tyrannical authority over the state.
There are other memorable scenes, like when Luther advises the princes to suppress a civil uprising, in which peasants are looting churches and killing churchmen, and it ends in a bloodbath of thousands, which he never intended. This shows the tremendous influence Luther had. He was a man of his times and a man for all time. His vision and courage helped establish the relationship between church and state that we enjoy today, as well as lay the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation and the giving of the Word of God to all people in their own languages. He helped to end the tyranny of the Church, which at that time fed on the superstitions and ignorance of the people.
This was a turning point in history that everyone should be very aware of, making this film essential viewing. The only other film versions of Luther's life that I am aware of are Guy Green's Luther from 1973, starring Stacy Keach, Patrick Magee and Hugh Griffith, and based on John Osborne's play; and Irving Pichel's Martin Luther from 1953, starring Niall MacGinnis, John Ruddock, Pierre Lefevre and Guy Verney. Both are good, but the latter is probably the better.

The Great Protestant.......2007-05-17
This film presents an excellent view of the development of Martin Luther's protestantism, at the expense of some historical oversimplification. Both interesting and informative to anyone interested in the historical development of western civilization, and above all, fun. Highly recommended.
(I would have preferred the choice of a German language soundtrack -- if Mel Gibson can be true to the very unusual original languages in Apocalypto and in his Jesus epic, why won't the producers of other films do the same? German should have been one of the choices for the soundtrack. But this is only a very minor quibble.)
Historically inaccurate, bowdlerized, romanticized, dull.......2007-03-28
"Luther", a hagiographic biopic funded by the Lutheran church, succeeds in little more than telling us that Martin Luther was a Great Man. Although the cinematography is sumptuous and the actors compentent, it is, for the most part, historically inaccurate, dramatically dull and even surprisingly fails to give more than a cursory glance at Luther's main ideas. I can't see "Luther" appealing to anyone but die-hard Protestants and people who like boring movies.
This movie presents us with a sensitive, matinee-idol Martin Luther, who befriends a young peasant mother and her crippled daughter, who defies the Church to bury a suicide on holy ground, and who- presumably- mends the broken wings of sparrows and heads the Greater Wittenberg district recycling program. This sentimentalized Luther is scandalized by the immorality of the Roman clergy and the sale of indulgences and so asserts a number of vague propositions of which the Catholic Church vehemently disapproves. (If one weren't already familiar with the history, they could easily miss what Luther actually stood for. I believe this movie allots one line each to the exposition of Sola Fide and Sola Scriptura). Luther refuses to recant, he translates the Bible into German, gets married and everyone lives happily ever after, except for some misguided peasants who get slaughtered after making the mistake of taking Luther at his word and interpreting the Bible for themselves. "Luther" may reinforce various self-congratulatory Protestant myths, but it does no service to history and truth. (Or cinema, for that matter.)
Although the modern Lutheran church is too ecumenical to really demonize Catholicism (as its founder was wont to do), this movie is full of many of the old legends invented out of whole cloth by Luther himself or his followers. We are supposed to believe that an Augustinian monk, an order renowned for its education and Biblical scholarship, never saw a Bible until he was in his 20s. We are also supposed to believe that Luther's German translation of the Bible was the first time the Scriptures were made available in the vernacular, when in fact there had been many German translations before his. The theology of indulgences is distorted and misrepresented, even in the dramatization of their (admitted) abuse. Minor fabrications include Luther's reason for joining a monastery (parental sadism, not a lightning-induced vow), his nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door (they were actually mailed to a Bishop), his dramatic assertion of "Here I Stand, I Can Do No Other"" (never spoken), and a vile blasphemy attributed to a thoroughly caricaturized Johann Tetzel.
Missing is the gutter-mouthed, fire-breathing, hate-filled man of violence who advocated the dispossession and enslavement of the Jews ( a stance that gave Hitler much ammunition) and the extermination of rebellious peasants and all religious groups that didn't follow his ideas (Catholics, Anabaptists, et al.) Far from representing the ideal of religious freedom, as the movie's epilogue states, Luther's revolution represented persecution, state control of the church and the vile doctrine of "Cuius regio, eius religio" (the faith of the ruler is the faith of the people.) As the nobility's rapacity made the Reformation possible in the first place, it was the state that was its main benefactor. We are also not shown the Martin Luther whose basic antinomianism and submissiveness to the nobility allowed him to connive in the bigamy of Phillip the Magnanimous. We also do not see the Luther who, when he inserted the word "alone" into Romans 3:28, edited Scripture to support his theology, when in fact the only place in the Bible where the words "faith alone" are to be found together is in James 2:24 where it says that it does_not_justify us. We do not see the Luther who removed 7 books from the Old Testament canon, and would have removed several other books, including Ecclesiastes, Esther, James, Hebrews, Jude & Revelation, had he the power. Nor does this movie show us the various lies Luther's own letters convict him of. If Luther had good points, he also had a dark side, and I'm not sure if the movie medium can properly capture the complexity. It's far easier to stitch together 113 minutes of set pieces and idol worship.
Fascinating period in history........2007-03-27
I'd always thought the Reformation began with Henry VIII's desire to divorce his first wife. Interesting movie.

Not much jazz spoken in this 1980 version of the Jolson classic, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings) and starring a very tentative Neil Diamond as a cantor's son who would rather sing commercially than in a synagogue. The soundtrack is tedious, the portrait of L.A.'s music industry preposterous, and Diamond (despite his talents as a singer-songwriter in the real world) can't help but look like a speck on the wall in the presence of Laurence Olivier, who plays his father. --Tom Keogh

- Neil Diamond... songs that touch our hearts!.......2007-05-13
Neil Diamond plays the roll of Yussel, the son of a Jewish Cantor who is expected to follow the traditional role of five previous generations of Cantors, dedicating their lives to guide a congregation through music.
As he seeks his own individuality, he defies his father, played masterfully by Sir Laurence Olivier, who is very unhappy to see his son attempting to step out of the role he was "born" to be, for to have received such a voice from God... has to mean that he must be a Cantor at the Synagogue.
The relentless pursuit of his dream, takes Neil Diamond from New York to California, leaving behind his wife, a woman he grew up with and was supposed to be his companion for life.
But the wife does not follow the husband's dream, she was quite happy with all she had, a school, a Cantor for a husband, and a role... center stage in the lives of the families that formed the congregation of their synagogue.
In California, Neil Diamond meets Lucie Arnaz, playing the role of the vibrant, go-getter young woman who, upon hearing him sing for the first time, knows she is meant to see him achieve his dream.
They fall madly in love and together set out to make a popular pop singer out of Yussel. At some point the wife comes out to California to try to take him back to New York and some of the lines between these two women are simply superb. When the wife, played by Catlin Adams asks Lucie Arnaz about the relationship that is taking place in California... and how far it has actually gone, Lucie replies "I offered him my body and he settled for a pizza."
But Neil Diamond stays in California and one day is visited by the father who dreams of taking his son back to his beginning... back to continue the family tradition of being a Cantor. The son tells the father he must stay, and when the father sees the new woman in his son's life, he rips his clothing, a tradition to communicate that for him, his son is now dead!
In the end, the family is reunited, but some of the scenes between father and son are priceless jewels of attempting to step out of traditional roles.
A dear friend of the family visits Yussel and asks that he return in his role of Cantor for the festivity of Yum Kippur. His father is now too old and too ill due to high-blood pressure to sing. He says that Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, is the Jewish day of repentance, and reconciliation. So... there is no better time like the present for father and son to reunite.
When Neil Diamond returns to the Synagogue, he delivers some of the best lyrics of this movie... the song is deeply moving.
The movie opens and closes with the timeless classic "America" a song that for all of us, immigrants, reaching US soil in search of liberty, opportunity and the pursuit of happiness, this remains the most moving music of all.
As with Neil Diamond the best part of the movie are the songs, and here we get the best of Neil Diamond. Hava Nagila, Adon Ojom, You Baby, Love on the Rocks, Amazed and Confused, Summer Love, Hello Again, Acapulco, Songs of Life, Jerusalem, Kol Nidre "My Name is Yussel" and America.
We are fans of Neil Diamond and have never missed a concert when he has visited South Florida. This newly acquired movie is and shall remain... best in class in our collection. Don't miss it!
EXCELLENT! Very uplifting, 5 star performances, Top Music.......2007-03-08
Neil Diamond is BRILLIANT in this performance, and moreso with the musical score. Excellent, excellent show, you'll want to watch again and again
Movie Rating.......2007-03-01
I thought the movie was really good. Have always liked Neil Diamond. I saw the movie years ago, but wanted to purchase it and watch it again. The
songs in the movie were so good that I purchased his greatest hits CD.
One of the 20th Century's Great Rock Stars.......2007-01-25
This is a great film simply because it showcases one of the best performers the rock age has spawned. Neil Diamond is a great composer and a great performer. The story line has been told twice before (Al Jolson and Danny Thomas), yet this film is by far the best of the three. The audience feels his energy both in the film and in the theater. If you are a Neil Diamond fan you simply have to have this work in your film library.
The Jazz Singer- 25th Anniversary Edition.......2007-01-25
Excellent film, This film is almost a parallel of Neil Diamond's life.

My stars! The first, and perhaps most magical, season of Bewitched still casts an enchanting spell. For escapist fantasy, this series, no doubt inspired by the play Bell, Book and Candle, broke significant television ground. The Stephens were sitcoms' first mixed marriage. Advertising executive Darrin Stephens (Dick York) was mortal, and wife Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) was a witch. According to a retrospective segment included on this four-disc set, the Stephenses were also the first couple to sleep in one bed! And Samantha's mother, Endora (the venerable Agnes Morehead), and father, Maurice (Maurice Evans, most popularly known as Dr. Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes, were TV's first separated couple. Surely, Darrin did for advertising what Dick Van Dyke's Rob Petrie did for comedy writing. And nose-twitching Samantha certainly gave Mary Tyler Moore's Laura Petrie a run for the money in the sexy suburbanite sweepstakes. This high-concept series' saving grace was that Darrin insisted that Samantha not engage in any "hocus-pocus." But in this first season, she would be compelled to use her extraordinary powers to right social wrongs (such as derogatory-witch stereotypes in the Halloween episode "The Witches Are Out"), champion the underdog (a lonely boy whose overprotective mother won't let him play baseball in "Little Pitchers Have Big Fears"), or to restore a troubled boy's Christmas spirit ("A Vision of Sugar Plums"). Or, she might just want to turn the tables on an insulting former girlfriend of Darrin's (the pilot, "Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha").
York and Montgomery had palpable chemistry. They also received able support by a stellar ensemble of character actors. Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne would earn Emmys for their signature roles as busybody neighbor Mrs. Kravitz and dotty Aunt Clara, respectively. George Tobias portrayed oblivious. long-suffering Abner Kravitz, with David White as Darrin's boss, Larry Tate. In today's more PC climate, Bewitched may offend the "ban Harry Potter" crowd. But for baby boomers especially, this inaugural set will happily conjure up vintage television memories. --Donald Liebenson

Sheer Magic.......2007-05-25
Well, this is an awesome show for one! The first season, filled with Samantha trying to adapt to being a non-witch, and in every episode failing in someway. The ups and downs of her struggle make everyone love her even more.
I for one, love this show and I can't wait until the rest of the series is released on DVD.
Excellent Job Sony!.......2007-05-07
I was happy to see that the first episode was left in Black and White. Of course, we were not among the few who had gotten color television sets when they first came out but I was glad that they did not colorize the Black and White episodes. I just ordered the last of the whole series and I can't wait to get it. Do yourself a favor, spend some time reading the customer reviews and only purchase from the studios that own the rights to the original prints of the shows. I got burned by purchasing another show from another site and it was horrible. I ended up giving it away. If you liked Bewitched, THE WHOLE SERIES IS A MUST HAVE!
Love Bewitched!.......2007-03-31
This black and white beginning of Bewitched will draw you in and make you want more. I had never seen the first few episodes until these dvds; it was a treat. I love watching the beginning and seeing the characters develop. You get a real feel for how much this cast really respected and worked well with eachother. As a kid watching re-runs of bewitched i always thought about how cool it would be to know sam or be her kid; watching these dvds as an adult i feel the same way :).
LOVE IT! .......2007-03-20
I am soooo happy to finally get this dvd set. I have loved the show since I caught them in re-run in the 90s.. but unfortunately, i have never been able to watch them from beginning to end... i just caught them whenever they were on tv. FINALLY, i saw them on amazon and i bought all 4 seasons.. i can't wait for the rest to come out. this is such an awesome show and i just love every episode. the only thing i wish it will have more of, was the bloopers and the extra features.
BLESSING, MAGIC, & A MESSAGE IN "BEWITCHED".......2007-03-19
My connection and affection for "BEWITCHED", that super special '60's Sitcom , is so strong I often thought William Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery conjured up the series especially for me. I am delighted the series is available, complete and unedited, on DVD. The first four Seasons are currently available, and I shall review each season in turn, I highly recommend purchasing the First and Second Season episodes in the original black and white; as they were originally broadcast. It's all high-quality. With the exception of the excellent series pilot episode, the picture quality of each episode is pristine. The show was blessed and a blessing from the very beginning. "BEWITCHED" remains one of the most perfectly written, directed, and cast shows in TV history. The writing was clever, imaginative, and often innovative. Within its fantasy framework, "BEWITCHED" included important messages about the stupidity of prejudice and stereotypes, and the importance of inclusion and unconditional love. The show succeeded brilliantly because the premise never became more precious than the characters and their relationships. The series, naturally, speaks about the "empowerment of women" (and by extention, the empowerment of all people who might feel like an outsider because they are
in some way "different from the norm" or blessed with special abilities). Samantha is amazing. She is something of an outsider, but she perfectly and naturally assimilates into a mortal, suburban society that will never fully understand, accept, or appreciate her special abilities. Samantha can easily sacrifice her witchcraft because it is not a sacrifice of herself or her special "essence". She maintains her feminity, her individuality, and her intelligence, This is because Samantha's self-definition is never wrapped up in the fact that she is "a witch"-- a very important fact that her mortal husband and disapproving family never completely understood. A central theme in many classic fantasy stories is the adage: "With great power comes great responsibility." Samantha is a level-headed lady who knows that witchcraft is merely a gift; and she knows how to use her gift wisely and well. On the rare occasion when a mere mortal like Darrin was temporarily gifted with supernatural powers, the results were disasterous because the power went to his head.
The pilot episode, credited to Sol Saks, is perfectly written and perfectly sets up the series to follow. The series begins with the magic four words: "Once Upon A Time." Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) is properly introduced
as a "typical American girl who happens to be... a witch." Fearing a prejudical reaction from her mortal mate Darrin, Samantha doesn't tell him of her special heritage unil their honymoon night. She was right. Darrin freaks out, but Dick York is excellent as the bothered, bewildered, and harried husband on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Samantha promises not to do anymore magic "stuff"; or at least to "taper off." But the audience will cheer when Samantha gives Darrin's snobby ex-girlfriend Shelia (Nancy Kovack) exactly what she deserves at a dinner party. Samantha and Darrin were TV'S first "mixed marriage"; and also the first TV couple to sleep in the same bed! Samantha's parents, Endora and Maurice (the outstanding Agnes Moorehead and Maurice Evans) are happily separated and furious over their daughter's apparent marital bliss
* SEASON ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Endora is quite cordial towards Darrin at their first meeting. "Why do you object to my daughter being who and what she is?" (The audience may well be asking the same thing). Darrin explains he wants to live a "normal" existence. Endora archly replies, "What is normal to YOU young man, is to US... Assinine!" The classic Endora vs. Darrin battle is officially ON! Endora's reaction is nothing compared to Samantha's infuriated father Maurice, who makes Darrin vanish to who knows where or what. Samantha pleads, "I love him... with all my heart I love him. Please don't take him away from me." Elizabeth Montgomery's performance is so sincere and touching, you never doubt the depth of Samantha's love for Darrin. The scene is a perfect illustration of one of the show's central themes: unconditional love is the most powerful "magic" of all.
* Alice Pearce is superb as Gladys Kravitz, the neighbor across the street who knows there is something special about Samantha. Pearce's priceless and pearless comedic talent reaches its apex in the episode "Abner Kadabra." Gladys sees Samantha do some magic, and Samantha hurriedly convinces her that she, Gladys, has "got the power" of ESP. This leads to a seance scene where Gladys' long-suffering husband Abner (George Tobias) is briefly turned to dust. Marion Lorne is instantly endearing as Samantha's dotty and adorable Aunt Clara. In "There's No Witch Like An Old Witch," Clara innocently tells some neighboorhood children she's a witch, and a battle-ax mother tries to have Clara declared mentally incompetent. Samantha, of course, will not stand for this.
* In "Driving Is The Only Way To Fly," Paul Lynde makes an early appearance as Harold Harold, a neurotic instructor who tries to teach Samantha to drive a car. Lynde subsequently joined the cast in the Second Season
as Samantha's mischievious Uncle Arthur. In "It Takes One To Know One," Endora sends a brunette witch to seduce Darrin (!!) and, in another episode, Christopher George makes a memorable guest appearance as a warlock ex-boyfriend of Samantha. George initially arrives to whisk Samantha away. He turns Darrin into a penquin, and ends up falling in love with Danger O'Reilly, a very mortal and attractive neighbor of Samantha and Darrin.
** "BEWITCHED" is a comedy of its time that easily transcended the decade of its original broadcasts to achieve
timelessness. There are countless reasons why "BEWITCHED" is as enduring as it is endearing. The allure of Elizabeth Montgomery is a primary factor. She is the main attraction. Just as Samantha bewitched Darrin, Elizabeth Montgomery enchanted TV audiences with her natural charms and the subtle, sincere delicacy of her performance. Although Montgomery and most of the rest of the marvelous "BEWITCHED" cast have sadly passed away, the spell they continue to cast is impossible to break. Don't be surprised if "BEWITCHED" makes you feel uplifted with tears in your eyes.

Customer Reviews:
Smart & Funny.......2007-05-08
This is my #1 fav tv comedy of ALL TIME (#2 is 'everybody loves raymond').
Bewitched's 2nd season is even better than the 1st with the birth of Stephens' baby girl Tabitha and introduction to the characters Serena and Uncle Arthur (who actually appeared in Season 1 as the driving instructor, which added more interesting stories and dynamics to the show.
I have purchased this set about a month or so ago and finished watching them in 2 days (I just couldn't stop!!) and I have re-watched them at least 5x so far. In addition to the humor and entertainment value, i find this show also being educational. very often, the dialogs make reference to historical events/person as well as some older 'jargons' that people no longer use these days.
overall, i am very happy with my purchase (I bought all 4 seasons) and can't wait for the rest to come out!
Samantha & the gang keep you laughing........2007-05-04
I still love Bewitched always have always will. The show seems never to age. It was actually funny & sweet so I had to get this season as well as the others. It's worth the price , not only for me to see my favorite show again but because now with kids of my own they like it & it's a safe show for kids. The dvds themselves were good quality. For me it was a good buy all the way around.
Colorization.......2007-04-12
The colorization of these are the best of have seen for any series in a long time. My only disappointment is that there is no added value. Sony should have at least pulled a few promos or such from their vaults!
Bewitched - Second Season.......2007-03-26
Once again, we are very happy with this Bewitched DVD release. This season is a 5 disc set. I purchased the colorized version and again, am very pleased with it. My children love this show and it is nice to see the COMPLETE, not syndicated, episodes on this release. Great show to add to your DVD collection.
"WE'RE IN FOR A GOOD SPELL".......2007-03-19
Once again, I highly recommend purchasing these Second Season episodes in Black And White. as they were originally broadcast:
During Season One of "BEWITCHED", director William Asher craftily and cleverly shot around the pregnancy of his then real-life wife and the series shining star Elizabeth Montgomery. She was again pregnant at the start of
the Second Season. But this time, instead of concealing it, Samantha and Darrin become the proud parents of Tabitha in the episode "And Something Makes Three." This episode also features a memorable guest appearance by Eve Arden as the nurse who attends Samantha. Moreover, this extra special episode features
Montgomery's debut performance as Serena, Samantha's brunette, sultry, look-alike Cousin. When Darrin (Dick York) first sees Serena, he thinks she is baby Tabitha, magically transformed into an adult!!
OTHER SECOND SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
In "We're In For A Bad Spell", Samantha, Darrin and Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) try to save a friend of Darrin's from being the victim of a centuries' old spell. In "The Joker Is A Card," Samantha lifts the lid off a serving dish to reveal Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde).
In the series' second Halloween episode, Endora (Agnes Moorehead) becomes infuriated with Darrin and transforms him into a werewolf. The werewolf make-up and York's performance in this episode is superb.
Bernard Fox makes his initial series appearance in "Disappearing Samantha." Fox plays Osgood Rightmire, a smug, phony witch-hunter who mutters an incantation that causes Samantha, and later Endora, to vanish. Fox would, of course, become a series regular as Dr. Bombay, the wacky-quaky witch doctor in the final episode of the Third Season titled "There's Gold In Them There Pills." Richard Dreyfuss makes his professional acting debut as a rotten warlock named Rodney in the episode "Man's Best Friend."
** The series bids an especially regrettable and sad farewell to Alice Pearce, who died of cancer during production. In her final appearances as neighbor Gladys Kravitz, Pearce is heartbreakingly thin and frail. Luckily, these episodes from the First And Second Seasons survive as a lasting testament to Pearce's comedic genius. Pearce won a well-deserved posthumous Emmy for her outstanding performance. Sandra Gould stepped into the role of Gladys in the Third Season, offering a more annoying and abrasive, ultimately unsympathetic, interpretation that never equalled the inspired work of the priceless Alice Pearce,
**Pearce's death was one of several behind the camera tragedies that "BEWITCHED" weathered. One of the series' best episodes "Divided He Falls" unintentionally forshadows a real tragedy yet to come. In this episode, Endora divides a seriously overworked Darrin into two, so the Serious Darrin can stay working, while the Fun Darrin takes Samantha on vacation. Dick York has a ball as Serious Darrin/Fun Darrin; although it is obviously a double and not York who first jumps off and then back on to a swimming pool dividing board in one scene. When she first discovers what Endora has done, an infuriated Samantha exclaims, "Mother, I only want ONE DARRIN!" Behind the camera, York sustained an agonizingly painful back injury years prior to "BEWITCHED."
York developed a serious addiction to painkillers, and eventually couldn't handle the physical comedy requirements of the role. Actor Dick Sargent was brought in as an emergency replacement as Darrin at the start of Season Six in 1969.
On a happier note, I wrote Elizabeth Montgomery a long overdue letter of appreciation in 1990. One year later, I received a beautiful autographed picture from her. That photo is one of my most cherished possesions.
It hangs on my kitchen wall, along with several other photos of lovely Elizabeth Montgomery.

The introduction of color takes a bit of the magic out of Bewitched, but adorable toddler Tabitha brings her own special enchantment to this third season, which earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. Also nominated were Elizabeth Montgomery as sophisticated, albeit domesticated, witch Samantha, Agnes Morehead as her disapproving mother Endora, and Marion Lorne as addled Aunt Clara, whose mis-spellings wreak havoc in the Stephens household, as when she unwittingly conjures up Ben Franklin in "My Friend Ben." As the season begins, "typical average baby" Tabitha reveals her heretofore-dormant supernatural powers. In the next episode, "The Moment of Truth," Darrin (Dick York) is distressed to find out about his daughter. "Remember 'normal'?" he wails to his wife. "We were going to have a normal married life" Though one laments that Serena is missing in action, the return of Bernard Fox as Dr. Bombay (in "There's Gold in Them Thar Pills") and Paul Lynde's practical joker Uncle Arthur are always welcome, even if Arthur's feud with Endora in "Endora Moves in for a Spell" never reaches the comic heights of season 2's "The Joker Is a Card" (the Yagazuzie Zim episode).
Other venerable character actors cast their distinctive spells, including Estelle Winwood ("Hold Me, Touch Me" in the original The Producers) and Reta Shaw (Mary Poppins) as Endora's sisters in "Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things; Marty Ingalls as a rival ad agency spy in "Dangerous Diaper Dan"; Norman "Mr. Roper" Fell as Sigmund Freud(!) in "I'd Rather Twitch Than Fight"; and, in a bizarre cameo, Willie Mays as one of Endora's Halloween party guests in "Twitch or Treat." ("You mean he's a...," Darrin stammers. "The way he hits home runs?" Samantha replies, "What else?"). Sandra Gould, replacing Alice Pearce, joins the cast as busybody neighbor Gladys Kravitz. One of the season's most enjoyable episodes is "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph," which allowed York to break out of his confounded husband character to portray the lusty Darrin the Bold, a cursed 14th-century ancestor. And with the sight of the ravishing Montgomery in a castle-maid costume, who needs extras in this otherwise charmed four-disc set? --Donald Liebenson

WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL.......2007-05-15
Great Acting - Not Great looking actors!
Oh how I long for the 70's!
This collection is wonderful - A TV show that I can watch over and over and over and still LOVE IT!
Big Fan of this VERY FUN and FUNNY SHOW - Bewitched!
I say Buy it, You'll love it!
Bewitched is Fun & Clever........2007-05-14
This classic comedy series was fun and clever - Elizabeth Montgomery is always charming, and has to fix up all the mischief around her and her exasperated husband. Even the kooky neighbor lady is suspicious, while her doubting husband is funny. Magical mischievous things happen, and you can believe. You cannot watch this show on TV currently (except maybe in wee-hours). So you should buy these DVDs, The show is a fantasy like Melissa Joan Hart's TV shows as a Teenage Witch. And you can rent Nicole Kidman's recent Bewitched movie, to sample the fun.
bewitched third season.......2007-04-10
I have always liked the Bewitched series, since I watched it with my family when I was little. I always remembered how upbeat and funny it was. And of course I thought ( and still do) Samantha was so beautiful! I had a crush on her.
I have a lot of the series on VHS over the past several years from the shows being on a variety of channels. Having them on a DVD format is of course the ultimate quality and no commercials! I like the added features that are on some of them. They do a great job of bringing back the memories!
I am looking forward to the fifth season to come out on DVD!!
STAY TUNED FOR "BEWITCHED"; NEXT: IN COLOR.......2007-03-19
The Third Season of BEWITCHED was actually a season of several important "Firsts." The Third Season was the first season of episodes shot in color. Erin and Diane Murphy also join the cast in the role of little toddler Tabitha.
THIRD SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
In the episode "Witches And Warlocks Are A Few Of My Favorite Things", Tabitha's witchly powers are tested on a weekend. Samantha ( Elizabeth Montgomery) explains that, although it is the weekend, her husband Darrin (Dick York) has to work. Aunt Hagatha (Reta Shaw) happily replies, "Good. Humans emit such a low-grade frequency they upset my instruments."
Samantha at first tries to avoid telling Darrin that Tabitha has inherited her special powers. Later, Samantha and Darrin have a hectic time trying to keep the truth about Tabitha from Darrin's boss Larry and his wife Louise (David White and Kasey Rogers.)
"BEWITCHED": THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON" is best as a perfect showcase for the talents of wonderful Marion Lorne as sweet, bumbling, delightfully vague Aunt Clara, who causes much unintentional havoc in the Stephens household. Clara causes a massive Statewide electrical blackout. The Stephens' residence remains the only household for miles with the lights miraculously still on! Clara accidentally zaps both Queen Victoria and Ben Franklin back from the past. The two historical people become two very "SURPRISE!" houseguests. Clara also gives Larry and Louise "Accidental Twins" when she magically creates an identical double of their son.
Samantha travels back in time to save Darrin from a curse in "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph"; where she meets Darrin's ancestor Darrin The Bold, also played by Dick York. In "Bewitched, Bothered and Infuriated," Darrin and Samantha travel back in time to prevent Larry from having a terrible accident. All this occurs because of some mis-information from Aunt Clara. The Witches Society finally has enough of Clara's magical mis-fires, and, in the outstanding episode "The Trial And Error Of Aunt CLara", they seek to excommunicate her. Samantha immediately leaps to her defense; but she only nearly avoids disaster as she simultaneously tries to defend her beloved Aunt and keep Darrin busy in the den so he won't find out what exactly is going on in the living room!!
* Episode #101: The Crone Of Cawdor: (3-16-67): This is a strangely weird, mystical and delightful episode. Dorothy Neuman plays a 500-year old crone who switches places with Darrin's attractive client Terry Warbell (Julie Gregg). The Crone hopes that Darrin will kiss her; thereby she will steal Darrin's youth! The transformed and confused Terry shows up at the Kravitz's house. Gladys (Sandra Gould) telephones Samantha about the strange visitor. Gladys says, "I have a feeling she's YOUR kind of people."
*Episode 106: "Nobody but a Frog Knows How To Live" (4-27-67): Character actor John Fiedler makes a memorable guest appearance as Fergus, a "human frog" who hopes that Samantha can unhex a hex and turn him back into a frog.
In the last episode of the Third Season, (Episode 107:: 5-4-67) titled "There's Gold In Them There Pills," Bernard Fox makes his first appearance as Dr. Bombay. The wacky-quaky witch doctor finds an instant miracle cure for the common cold; but his cure has an hilarious side-effect on mere mortals!
TV Classic.......2007-01-27
I've enjoyed getting Bewitched and watching it season by season. I've never seen the show in sequence before. 3rd season is in color for 1st time, but now seasons 1 & 2 are available in colorized versions or orig B/W.

Whether your intellect is completely engaged or passively detached, any viewing of Naqoyqatsi is likely to provoke a fascinating response. You can view it as a magnificent, visually stimulating music video (as critic Roger Ebert suggested you should), or in context as the third and most unsettling film in director Godfrey Reggio's "qatsi" trilogy, each titled from the Hopi language, and preceded by Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi ("Life out of Balance" and "Life in Transformation," respectively). "Life as War" is the translation of this film's title, and Reggio's theme is not one of conventional warfare, but of daily life as warfare in the age of rapidly evolving technology. The entire trilogy views humankind as a blight on the pristine nature of Earth, but here the theme is taken to its inevitable extreme: a constant flow of new and archival images--manipulated with solarization, digital enhancements, thermal effects, 2-D and 3-D animation, etc.--combine to convey athletic and military regimentation, culminating in the doomsday flowering of missiles, rockets, and all varieties of nuclear weaponry. The cumulative effect, when combined with Philip Glass's mesmerizing score (his best of the trilogy, with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma) is one of doom-laden portent, but, as Stephen Holden observed in the New York Times, the film is also arrestingly beautiful as it weaves its hypnotic, apocalyptic spell. For those who wish to delve further, Reggio, Glass, and editor/visual designer Jon Kane provide valuable insight in a bonus panel discussion. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Miramax Home Entertainment and Oscar(R)-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Best Director, TRAFFIC, 2000) present NAQOYQATSI ("Life As War"), from filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, in collaboration with composer Phillip Glass, whose original score features renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In this cinematic concert -- the concluding film of the Qatsi Trilogy preceded by the critically acclaimed KOYAANISQATSI ("Life Out Of Balance"), and POWAQQATSI ("Life In Transformation") -- mesmerizing images reanimated from everyday reality, then visually altered with state-of-the-art digital techniques, chronicle the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic, and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and spectacle, tragedy and hope, fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music, giving rise to a unique artistic experience that reflects Reggio's visions of a brave new globalized world.
Customer Reviews:
Music video or feature film?.......2007-05-18
Having read some other reviews here, I have to agree with their basic criticism. Then again, perhaps this film should not so much be critisised as a feature film, but as a music video, or in fact a video installation that took the wrong door. Watching this as a feature film is unbearable for anyone with a sense of plot. Also, it has so many flashy effects that there should be a seizure warning on the package. But the film certainly goes well as a background for Phil Glass' very enjoyable music, or for running it in the background during a weird, geeky party you are having in an abandoned Detroit warehouse...
very, very disappointing... and bad.......2007-01-23
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
Naqoyaqaatsi, to quote some other reviewers, is just 'a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing'... 'all quite forgettable'... except that the feeling of disillusionment and disappointment is hard to forget... The absence of Ron Fricke and his incredible cinematography that mad the other films so great stops this from even being interesting.

Amazing........2007-01-12
If you have not watched this yet and have any inclination to, PLEASE DO. It is not a "movie with a plot" so to speak, but a film/documentation of society and culture. I love it. (But watch Kooyanisqatsi first. ) In comparison, it is what Kooyannisqatsi would have been had it been made 20 years later. I think it's brilliant.
Very disappointing end to the series.......2006-12-13
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic, and features what is possibly the best score Philip Glass ever wrote for anything.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
This third installment offers none of the thought-provoking imagery of the first two films. It's just a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing, and all quite forgettable. I wonder what went wrong?
Don't waste your time.
Botched Opportunity.......2006-12-02
First, let me say, I LOVE Koyaanisqatsi, the original film in this trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi is a true visual poem that tells a straight forward story about what we humans are doing to the earth.
The second film in the trilogy, Powaqqatsi, wasn't as good as the first but it was still fairly understandable as a critique of how humans exploit one another.
Naqoyqatsi could have been the best in the series since it had ample opportunity to show us the horrors of war. Instead, it comes off as a sophomoric exercise in video experimentation, nothing more. If not for Philip Glass' music, I would not have given this film any rating at all.
I write this criticism in hopes that Godfrey Reggio sees it. He should pull this travesty off the market and reshoot the entire film with stronger footage showing us, as clearly as he did with "Koy", why war (the topic of "Naq") is so horrific. If you want an effective critique of violence, try "Clockwork Orange". Naqoyqatsi is simply a mess.
