The American Girl collection of books, dolls, and accessories makes its film debut in this inaugural title featuring bestselling character Samantha, in a live-action holiday story set in 1904. AnnaSophia Robb plays Samantha Parkington, a poised yet playful 9-year-old who lives with her wealthy grandmother (Mia Farrow) in a country estate after the untimely death of her parents. Still grieving her loss, Samantha takes comfort in her friendships with new pal Nellie, a servant girl, and her dashing Uncle Gard (Jordan Bridges), a successful businessman. When Uncle Gard marries Cornelia (Rebecca Mader), Samantha is reluctant to embrace this female "intruder" until she spends three months with the newlyweds in New York City. In time, Samantha grows to trust and admire Cornelia, a spirited suffragette. Emboldened by Cornelia's example, Samantha takes her own courageous risks to improve the plight of some young orphans. This superbly produced film provides a glimpse into America during the Industrial Revolution, while showcasing the promising talents of young Robb. (Ages 8 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Great life lessons - Super Movie.......2007-06-25
I can't even count how many times my 9 yo daughter and I have watched this movie together. Even my mother loves the American Girl Movies. We love the period costumes, the strong storyline and wonderful message of this movie. Great "Character Education" for kids. Fun, entertaining and stays interesting throughout! A must for your American Girl!
Nice Holiday Film for the Entire Family.......2007-06-10
Girls who search for American Girl stories in book stores and parents who purchase them all the time for them will both enjoy this warm holiday treat based on the very popular Samantha. The books about young Samantha are among the most popular in the sought after series. Authors Valerie Tripp, Susan S. Adler, and Maxine Rose Schur have all contributed to the character wonderfully brought to life by director Nadia Tass in this most enjoyable holiday film for the family.
Set during the turn of the century in Bedford, New York, Samantha finds three friends in Nelly (Kelsey Lewis), Jennie (Olivia Ballantyne), and Bridget O'Malley (Hannah Endicott-Douglas), three young girls without the luxuries afforded Samantha with her Grandmary (Mia Farrow) who have come to work next door. Nellie is Samantha's age and soon they are best friends. Annasophia Robb was the perfect choice for Samantha and is also excellent as her best pal Nellie.
Samantha's Uncle Gard (Jordan Bridges), her last real tie to her deceased mother, has come to visit and brought with him an independent woman named Cornelia (Rebecca Maddy) he is engaged to marry. Worried she will be forgotten at first, Samantha soon warms to her and offers her mother's bridal veil when hers is damaged by fire. She is separated from Nellie and her friends, however, when she must go to New York City with the newly married couple while her grandmary vacations.
Set in 1904, it is nice to see through Samantha's eyes the changing times as she writes to Nellie about her adventures in the big city. When Nellie's father dies, however, the three girls are sent to an orphanage where they are mistreated. Samantha's school paper on factories will change drastically when she sees firsthand the dangerous child labor used in them while searching for her friend. Samantha hides the girls in her home after helping them escape but must reveal the truth when little Bridget becomes ill.
While it may be a predictable solution the viewer can see coming from the very beginning, there is a real warmth here and a special Christmas for everyone's favorite American Girl, Samantha. This is a very nice film for the holidays families will delight in, especially those with girls Samantha's age and younger. Those who enjoy the books or hear about them all the time from their kids will not be disappointed by this nicely filmed movie set during Christmas. A good one.
Good Movie for young girls........2007-04-07
I thought this movie was a very good for my young girls. It shows what life was like in 1904 America and awareness for helping others.
Wholesome Family Entertainment.......2007-01-30
Samantha is my favorite of the American Girls -- perky, but not an all-out tomboy like Felicity. The movie was a good adaption of the book. An improvement, even. Most of the actors filled their parts gracefully, and the plot was well laid out. Samantha's friendship with Nellie O'Malley was convincing if simple, and her relationships with Grandmary, her uncle, and her new Aunt Cornelia were potrayed as complex and interpersonal. How refreshing to have a story about a girl who is wealthy but not selfish -- who enjoys nothing more than giving to others, not only things, but of herself. Samantha is a fun but lady-like character who young girls can both relate to and learn from. I really enjoyed this movie, was touched by it, and would reccomend it to anyone.
A good, but not great movie.......2006-12-08
I'm a high school social studies teacher and I was a fan of the book series as a young girl. I was therfore very excited to see the movies coming out. This particular one is well done, but I guess as a social studies teacher I was looking for a little more historical detail. However overall it is good movie, espically for around the holidays.

If you've seen this box in the store, you may have noticed the running time listed as 130 minutes. This is very deceptive. The feature is only 48 minutes long - the rest is bonus features which my small children have very little, if any, interest in using.

Gentle sentiment turns The Locket into an old-fashioned weeper for anyone who loved Driving Miss Daisy. It's not nearly as effective as that 1989 Oscar®-winner, but this Hallmark Hall of Fame production--adapted from the novel by Richard Paul Evans--has similar charms of its own, and its warm-hearted themes of love and compassion offer a welcomed alternative to network sex and violence. After caring for his terminally ill mother, an aspiring medical student named Michael (Chad Willett) works at a nursing home, where an elderly resident (Vanessa Redgrave) teaches him valuable lessons using her own past--and a long-lost love--to illustrate the importance of second chances. Their friendship, and an unexpected court trial, encourages Michael to reconcile with his estranged father (Terry O'Quinn), with the support of his loving fiancée (Marguerite Moreau). No surprises here, but have your Kleenex handy just in case. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Slow movie.......2007-05-07
A so/so movie. Love Vanessa Redgrave but this movie is not the best. Obviously, a made for tv movie.
very mixed bag.......2006-05-26
On the one hand, you have Richard Paul Evans' usual deft deployment of sure-fire heart-tugging material: parents and children, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends. This is can't miss material (still, it must be said that a lot of moviemakers manage to miss with it anyway). In this movie, they work. It doesn't hurt, of course, that you have a master like Vanessa Redgrave playing one of the major roles.
On the other hand, one could wish that Evans (whose field is Public Relations) had not achieved success so easily when he started. Otherwise, he might have read one or two books on novel-writing and learned the basics. In this movie, the main character's problems are caused by the main character. That would be okay if they were unavoidable or excusable.
But first, the guy wrecks his relationship with the love of his life because her father tells him it's better for her. And this type of moralistic man does the "right" thing no matter how much it hurts other people. He also does not confide in her why he's doing this. It's curious that these two traits of moral rigidity and a nondisclosure that amounts to dishonesty should occur in the same person, yet in life these two are in fact quite often found together. So, at least it's realistic. (That doesn't make it good writing, however.) In fact, he tells her it's best for her. She tells HIM "this is best for me". He totally discounts this. He knows what's best for her better than she does. In other words, he shows himself to be a male chauvinist also.
Then, he does stupid things, viz. not reporting a co-worker whom he overhears beating one of the elderly patients. Then, he does an even stupider thing, after being arrested for murder of this patient, he doesn't tell on her. Then, he tops that in stupidity: after he has been forbidden by the court from going to the nursing home, he--you guessed it--goes to the nursing home!
The reason writing books forbid this kind of thing is that it infuriates the reader or audience. In this case, it also strains credibility.
tear jerker.......2005-06-27
After reading the Locket, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it had been made into a movie. The story is about a young man, Michael, who after the death of his mother, gets a job at a nursing home and befriends an elderly woman Ester who changes his life for the better and shows him what faith and forgivenss are all about. MIchael has to go through many trials in his young life, but decides to become better, not bitter from them. The book is definitely better, so I would recommend reading it before watching the movie. I also recommend reading the sequel, the Carousel. The movie unfortunately doesn't have nearly all the details and a few minor changes were made.( For instance in the movie Michael's father is alive and he and Michael become friends, but in the book he dies.) I thought the director picked the perfect actors for the role. I cannot imagine someone other than the talented Vanessa Redgrave playing the part of Ester, nor anyone playing the part of sensitive, honest Michael other than the hot Chad Willet.
Typical heartwarming Hallmark Hall of Fame movie.......2003-12-02
This movie, based on Richard Paul Evans' novel, pleasantly exceeded my expectations. Vanessa Redgrave's performance captured the essence of Esther Huish's character. What a heartwarming story line that reminds us of power of love but also the unfortunate dark sides of humanity. I would highly recommend this movie for any Richard Paul Evans fans or Hallmark Hall of Fame movie collectors. I am glad this is movie can be purchased, as I have been searching for it ever since seeing it on television.
